Abstract It was recently proposed that there exists a “gateway” in the orbital parameter space through which Centaurs transition to Jupiter-family comets (JFCs). Further studies have implied that the majority of objects that eventually evolve into JFCs should leave the Centaur population through this gateway. This may be naively interpreted as gateway Centaurs being pristine progenitors of JFCs. This is the point we want to address in this work. We show that the opposite is true: gateway Centaurs are, on average, more thermally processed than the rest of the population of Centaurs crossing Jupiter’s orbit. Using a dynamically validated JFC population, we find that only ∼20% of Centaurs pass through the gateway prior to becoming JFCs, in accordance with previous studies. We show that more than half of JFC dynamical clones entering the gateway for the first time have already been JFCs—they simply avoided the gateway on their first pass into the inner solar system. By coupling a thermal evolution model to the orbital evolution of JFC dynamical clones, we find a higher than 50% chance that the layer currently contributing to the observed activity of gateway objects has been physically and chemically altered, due to previously sustained thermal processing. We further illustrate this effect by examining dynamical clones that match the present-day orbits of 29P/Schwassmann-Wachmann 1, P/2019 LD2 (ATLAS), and P/2008 CL94 (Lemmon).

Abstract Centaurs are an ephemeral class of objects that can evolve into Jupiter-family comets (or JFCs) due to gravitational perturbations from the giant planets. In this work, we use numerical integration of massless test particles in the six-body problem (the Sun, four giant planets, and a test particle) to study the transformation of Centaurs into JFCs. We find that Centaurs can transform into JFCs via a rapid, continuous drop in perihelion or aphelion distance to a value below 5.2 au or 7 au, respectively, typically within 5 yr from the start of the drop. We call these JFC perihelion drops and JFC aphelion drops, respectively. These drops are correlated with close approaches to Jupiter. For such perihelion and aphelion drops, the maximum possible fractional change in the associated perihelion or aphelion distance increases with decreasing close-approach distance to Jupiter. A perihelion barrier may exist at 6.3 au. If so, then it must be crossed from above in order for a Centaur to transform into a JFC due to a single close approach to Jupiter. Currently, 93 (or 11%) of the known Centaurs have a perihelion distance, q, below 6.3 au. If the inclination of the orbit of the Centaur to the ecliptic plane is above 10.°2, then orbits with q > 6.3 au and 2 < T J < 3 can exist, where T J is the Tisserand parameter with respect to Jupiter. Small bodies in such orbits could be classified as either Centaurs or JFCs.

AbstractWe present results from numerical simulations of a Jupiter family comet (JFC) population (orbital periods P < 20 yr and Tisserand parameters in the range 2 < T < 3.1) originated in the Scattered Disk and transferred to the Jupiter's zone through gravitational interactions with the Jovian planets. We shall call ‘non-JFCs’ those comets coming from the same source, but that do not fulfill the previous criteria (mainly because they have periods P > 20 yr). We have carried out series of numerical simulations of fictitious comets with a purely dynamical model and also with a more complete dynamical - physical model that includes besides nongravitational forces, sublimation and splitting mechanisms. We obtained better fits with models including physical effects, and in particular our best fits are for four splitting models with a relative weak dependence on q, and a mass loss in every splitting event that is smaller/greater for higher/lower frequencies respectively. The mean lifetime of JFCs with radii R > 1 km and q < 1.5 AU is found to be of about 150-200 revolutions (~103 yr). We find a total population of JFCs with radii R > 1 km within Jupiter's zone of 450 ± 50 and a mean lifetime of about 150-200 revolutions (~103 yr) for those getting q < 1.5 AU. The population of JFCs + non-JFCs with radii R > 1 km in Jupiter-crossing orbits may be about ~2,250 ± 250. Most of non-JFCs have perihelia close to Jupiter's orbit. We also present maps of the densest zones of JFCs in the orbital element space.

Introduction: Juxta-facet cysts (JFCs) are extradural lesions. Calcification of cyst walls is often reported, although completely calcified facet cysts are extremely rare. Case Presentation: A 65-year-old man presented with a 1-year history of the right lower extremity weakness and pain, and chronic low back pain. Imaging showed hypointensity on T1- and T2-weighted magnetic resonance images which can be very well appreciated on a completely calcified computed tomography mass arising from the right L3/4 facet joint. The patient underwent a total cyst removal with a facetectomy of the right L3/4 facet, and L3 to L4 posterior fusion. Conclusion: We presented a case of a completely calcified JFC in a patient with back pain and radiculopathy who underwent cystectomy and spinal fusion. JFCs should be considered in the differential diagnosis of calcified extradural lesions.

Abstract Jupiter-family comets (JFCs) exhibit a wide range of activity levels and mass loss over their orbits. We analyzed high-cadence observations of 42 active JFCs with the wide-field Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) in 2020–2021. We measured the dust production rates of the JFCs using the Af ρ parameter and its variation as a function of heliocentric distance. There is a tendency for our JFC sample to exhibit a maximum Af ρ after perihelion, with 254P/McNaught and P/2020 WJ5 (Lemmon) having their maximum Af ρ over a year after perihelion. On average, the rate of change of activity postperihelion was shallower than preperihelion. We also estimated the maximum mass-loss rate for 17 of the JFCs in our sample, finding 4P/Faye to be the most active. We present a subset of comets whose measured Af ρ have been interpolated and extrapolated to a common distance of 2 au preperihelion and postperihelion. From these measurements we found no correlation of intrinsic activity with current perihelion distance. For three of the JFCs in our sample, 6P/d’Arrest, 156P/Russell–LINEAR, and 254P/McNaught, there was no visible coma but a constant absolute magnitude, which we attribute to a probable detection of the nucleus. We derived upper limits for the nuclear radii of ≤2.1 ± 0.3 km, ≤2.0 ± 0.2 km, and ≤4.0 ± 0.8 km, respectively. Finally, we found that 4P/Faye, 108P/Ciffreo, 132P/Helin–Roman–Alu 2, 141P/Machholz 2, and 398P/Boattini experienced outbursts between 2020 and 2022.

Abstract Grain–grain collisions shape the three-dimensional size and velocity distribution of the inner Zodiacal Cloud and the impact rates of dust on inner planets, yet they remain the least understood sink of zodiacal dust grains. For the first time, we combine the collisional grooming method combined with a dynamical meteoroid model of Jupiter-family comets (JFCs) that covers 4 orders of magnitude in particle diameter to investigate the consequences of grain–grain collisions in the inner Zodiacal Cloud. We compare this model to a suite of observational constraints from meteor radars, the Infrared Astronomical Satellite, mass fluxes at Earth, and inner solar probes, and use it to derive the population and collisional strength parameters for the JFC dust cloud. We derive a critical specific energy of Q D * = 5 × 10 5 ± 4 × 10 5 R met − 0.24 J kg−1 for particles from JFC particles, making them 2–3 orders of magnitude more resistant to collisions than previously assumed. We find that the differential power-law size index −4.2 ± 0.1 for particles generated by JFCs provides a good match to observed data. Our model provides a good match to the mass-production rates derived from the Parker Solar Probe observations and their scaling with the heliocentric distance. The higher resistance to collisions of dust particles might have strong implications to models of collisions in solar and exosolar dust clouds. The migration via Poynting–Robertson drag might be more important for denser clouds, the mass-production rates of astrophysical debris disks might be overestimated, and the mass of the source populations might be underestimated. ABSTRACT Based on telescopic observations of Jupiter-family comets (JFCs), there is predicted to be a paucity of objects at sub-kilometre sizes. However, several bright fireballs and some meteorites have been tenuously linked to the JFC population, showing metre-scale objects do exist in this region. In 2017, the Desert Fireball Network (DFN) observed a grazing fireball that redirected a meteoroid from an Apollo-type orbit to a JFC-like orbit. Using orbital data collected by the DFN, in this study, we have generated an artificial data set of close terrestrial encounters that come within 1.5 lunar distances (LD) of the Earth in the size-range of 0.01–100 kg. This range of objects is typically too small for telescopic surveys to detect, so using atmospheric impact flux data from fireball observations is currently one of the only ways to characterize these close encounters. Based on this model, we predict that within the considered size-range 2.5 × 108 objects ($0.1{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$ of the total flux) from asteroidal orbits (TJ > 3) are annually sent on to JFC-like orbits (2 < TJ < 3), with a steady-state population of about 8 × 1013 objects. Close encounters with the Earth provide another way to transfer material to the JFC region. Additionally, using our model, we found that approximately 1.96 × 107 objects are sent on to Aten-type orbits and ∼104 objects are ejected from the Solar system annually via a close encounter with the Earth.

AbstractWe studied the orbital evolution of objects with initial orbits close to those of Jupiter-family comets (JFCs), Halley-type comets (HTCs), and long-period comets, and the probabilities of their collisions with the planets. In our runs the probability of a collision of one object with the Earth could be greater than the sum of probabilities for thousands of other objects. Even without the contribution of such a few objects, the probability of a collision of a former JFC with the Earth during the dynamical lifetime of the comet was greater than 4×10−6. This probability is enough for delivery of all the water to Earth's oceans during the formation of the giant planets. The ratios of probabilities of collisions of JFCs and HTCs with Venus and Mars to the mass of the planet usually were not smaller than that with Earth. Among 30,000 considered objects with initial orbits close to those of JFCs, a few objects got Earth-crossing orbits with semimajor axesa<2 AU and aphelion distancesQ<4.2 AU, or even got inner-Earth (Q<0.983 AU), Aten, or typical asteroidal orbits, and moved in such orbits for more than 1 Myr (up to tens or even hundreds of Myr). From a dynamical point of view, the fraction of extinct comets among near-Earth objects can exceed several tens of percent, but, probably, many extinct comets disintegrated into mini-comets and dust during a smaller part of their dynamical lifetimes.

Abstract The discovery of the transient Jupiter co-orbital comet P/2019 LD2 (ATLAS) drew significant interest. Not only will LD2 transition between being a Centaur and a Jupiter-family comet (JFC) in 2063, the first time this process can be observed as it happens, it is also very active for its large heliocentric distance. We present observations and orbital integrations of the newly discovered transient Jupiter co-orbital comet P/2023 V6 (PANSTARRS), the second such object known. Despite similar modern orbits, V6 is significantly (15×) less active than LD2 and most JFCs as determined via Af ρ measurements at the same R H . We find that V6 is co-orbital between 2020 and 2044, twice the duration of LD2, but it will not become a JFC soon. We interpret these differences in activity as evolutionary, with V6 having lost a significant fraction of its near-surface ice compared to LD2 by previously being warmer. While V6's pre-encounter orbit was somewhat warmer than LD2's, future thermal modeling will be needed to understand if this can explain their differences or if a more significant difference further into the past is required. This is more evidence that LD2 is a pristine and ice-rich object, and thus it may display very strong activity when it becomes a JFC. We use the differences between V6 and LD2 to discuss the interpretation of cometary activity at large heliocentric distances as well as the small end of the cratering record of the Galilean satellites. Continuing observations of both objects are highly encouraged.

Abstract We have discovered evidence of cometary activity originating from (551023) 2012 UQ192 (alternately designated 2019 SN40), which we dynamically classify as a Jupiter Family Comet (JFC). JFCs have eccentric Jupiter-crossing orbits and originate in the Kuiper Belt. Analysis of these objects can provide vital information about minor planets in the outer solar system, such as the distribution of volatiles within the solar system. Activity on 2012 UQ192 was first recognized by volunteers on our NASA Partner Citizen Science project Active Asteroids. Through our own examination of archival image data, we found a total of ∼30 images presenting strong evidence of activity near perihelion during two separate orbits. 2012 UQ192 is notable as we found it to be recurrently active. When 2012 UQ192 approaches its perihelion passage in 2027 September, we predict it will reactivate and will be a prime subject for follow-up observations.

Abstract Centaurs are minor solar system bodies with orbits transitioning between those of trans-Neptunian scattered disk objects and Jupiter-family comets (JFCs). 39P/Oterma (39P) is a frequently active centaur that has recently held both centaur and JFC classifications and was observed with the JWST NIRSpec instrument on 2022 July 27 UTC while it was 5.82 au from the Sun. For the first time, CO2 gas emission was detected in a centaur, with a production rate of Q CO 2 = (5.96 ± 0.80) × 1023 molecules s−1. This is the lowest detection of CO2 of any centaur or comet. CO and H2O were not detected down to constraining upper limits. Derived mixing ratios of Q CO/Q CO 2 ≤ 2.03 and Q CO 2 /Q H 2 O ≥ 0.60 are consistent with CO2 and/or CO outgassing playing large roles in driving the activity, but not water, and show a significant difference between the coma abundances of 29P/Schwassmann–Wachmann 1, another centaur at a similar heliocentric distance, which may be explained by thermal processing of 39P’s surface during its previous JFC orbit. To help contextualize the JWST data we also acquired visible CCD imaging data on two dates in 2022 July (Gemini-North) and September (Lowell Discovery Telescope). Image analysis and photometry based on these data are consistent with a point-source detection and an estimated effective nucleus radius of 39P in the range of R nuc = 2.21–2.49 km.

Abstract We report our discovery of cometary activity in the form of a diffuse tail associated with minor planet 2008 QZ44 during two previous orbits: 2008 and 2017. This finding was prompted in part by Active Asteroids, our Zooniverse-hosted NASA Partner Citizen Science program. Participants flagged two UT 2017 July 12 Dark Energy Camera images of 2008 QZ44 as active. Independently, our team identified activity in nine Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope MegaPrime images from UT 2008 November 20. During both apparitions 2008 QZ44 was near its perihelion passage. 2008 QZ44 has a Tisserand parameter with respect to Jupiter of 2.821, placing it in the Jupiter-family comet (JFC) class, and our dynamical integrations confirm this classification. JFCs contain primordial material that informs us about solar system evolution, and help us map the present-day volatile distribution. We note that 2008 QZ44 has previously been classified as a quasi-Hilda comet candidate.

Abstract We report that object 282P/(323137) 2003 BM80 is undergoing a sustained activity outburst, lasting over 15 months thus far. These findings stem in part from our NASA Partner Citizen Science project Active Asteroids (http://activeasteroids.net), which we introduce here. We acquired new observations of 282P via our observing campaign (Vatican Advanced Technology Telescope (VATT), Lowell Discovery Telescope (LDT), and the Gemini South telescope), confirming 282P was active on UT 2022 June 7, some 15 months after 2021 March images showed activity in the 2021–2022 epoch. We classify 282P as a member of the quasi-Hilda objects (QHOs), a group of dynamically unstable objects found in an orbital region similar to, but distinct in their dynamical characteristics to, the Hilda asteroids (objects in 3:2 resonance with Jupiter). Our dynamical simulations show 282P has undergone at least five close encounters with Jupiter and one with Saturn over the last 180 yr. 282P was most likely a Centaur or Jupiter-family comet (JFC) 250 yr ago. In 350 yr, following some 15 strong Jovian interactions, 282P will most likely migrate to become a JFC or, less likely, an outer main-belt asteroid orbit. These migrations highlight a dynamical pathway connecting Centaurs and JFCs with quasi-Hildas and, potentially, active asteroids. Synthesizing these results with our thermodynamical modeling and new activity observations, we find volatile sublimation is the primary activity mechanism. Observations of a quiescent 282P, which we anticipate will be possible in 2023, will help confirm our hypothesis by measuring a rotation period and ascertaining the spectral type.

Abstract Large and deep depressions, also known as pits, are observed at the surface of all Jupiter-family comets (JFCs) imaged by spacecraft missions. They offer the opportunity to glimpse the subsurface characteristics of comet nuclei and study the complex interplay between surface structures and cometary activity. This work investigates the evolution of pits at the surface of 81P/Wild 2, 9P/Tempel 1, and 103P/Hartley 2, in continuation of the work by Benseguane et al. on 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko. Pits are selected across the surface of each nucleus, and high-resolution shape models are used to compute the energy they receive. A thermal evolution model is applied to constrain how cometary activity sustained under current illumination conditions could modify them. Similar to what was found for 67P, we show that erosion resulting from water-driven activity is primarily controlled by seasonal patterns that are unique to each comet as a consequence of their shape and rotational properties. However, progressive erosion sustained after multiple perihelion passages is not able to carve any of the observed pits. Instead, cometary activity tends to erase sharp morphological features; they become wider and shallower over time. Our results reinforce the evolutionary sequence evidenced from independent measurables to transform “young” cometary surfaces, with sharp surface topography prone to outbursts, into “old” cometary surfaces. Finally, we suggest that the mechanism at the origin of the pits on JFCs should be able to carve these structures in a region of the solar system where water ice does not sublimate; the Centaur phase thus appears critical to understand JFC surface properties.

Abstract Jupiter-family comet (JFC) P/2021 HS (PANSTARRS) only exhibits a coma within a few weeks of its perihelion passage at 0.8 au, which is atypical for a comet. Here we present an investigation into the underlying cause using serendipitous survey detections and targeted observations. We find that the detection of the activity is caused by an extremely faint coma being enhanced by the forward scattering effect owing to the comet reaching a phase angle of ∼140°. The coma morphology is consistent with sustained, sublimation-driven activity produced by a small active area, ∼700 m2, one of the smallest values ever measured on a comet. The phase function of the nucleus shows a phase coefficient of 0.035 ± 0.002 mag deg−1, implying an absolute magnitude of H = 18.31 ± 0.04 and a phase slope of G = − 0.13, with color consistent with typical JFC nuclei. Thermal observations suggest a nucleus diameter of 0.6–1.1 km, implying an optical albedo of 0.04–0.23, which is higher than typical cometary nuclei. An unsuccessful search for dust trail and meteor activity confirms minimal dust deposit along the orbit, totaling ≲108 kg. As P/2021 HS is dynamically unstable, similar to typical JFCs, we speculate that it has an origin in the trans-Neptunian region and that its extreme depletion of volatiles is caused by a large number of previous passages to the inner solar system. The dramatic discovery of the cometary nature of P/2021 HS highlights the challenges of detecting comets with extremely low activity levels. Observations at high phase angle, where forward scattering is pronounced, will help identify such comets.

The human promoter region of JFC1, a phosphatidylinositol 3,4,5-trisphosphate binding ATPase, was isolated by amplification of a 549bp region upstream of the jfc1 gene by the use of a double-PCR system. By primer extension analysis we mapped the transcription initiation site at nucleotide −321 relative to the translation start site. Putative regulatory elements were identified in the jfc1 TATA-less promoter, including three consensus sites for nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB). We analysed the three putative NF-κB binding sites by gel retardation and supershift assays. Each of the putative NF-κB sites interacted specifically with recombinant NF-κB p50, and the complexes co-migrated with those formed by the NF-κB consensus sequence and p50. An antibody to p50 generated a supershifted complex for these NF-κB sites. These sites formed specific complexes with nuclear proteins from tumour necrosis factor α (TNFα)-treated WEHI 231 cells, which were supershifted with antibodies against p50 and p65. The jfc1 promoter was transcriptionally active in various cell lines, as determined by luciferase reporter assays following transfection with a jfc1 promoter luciferase vector. Co-transfection with NF-κB expression vectors or stimulation with TNFα resulted in significant transactivation of the jfc1 promoter construct, although transactivation of a mutated jfc1 promoter was negligible. The expression of a dominant negative IκB (inhibitor κB) decreased basal jfc1 promoter activity. The cell lines PC-3, LNCaP and DU-145, but not Epstein—Barr virus-transformed lymphocytes, showed a dramatic increase in the expression of JFC1 after treatment with TNFα, suggesting that transcriptional activation of JFC1 by the TNFα/NF-κB pathway is significant in prostate carcinoma cell lines.

Two of the major proteins secreted by the prostate epithelium secretory cells are PSA (prostate-specific antigen) and PSAP (prostatic-specific acid phosphatase). The molecules involved in the secretory machinery of PSA and PSAP, and the regulation of this machinery, remain unknown. In the present paper, we provide evidence that JFC1 [synaptotagmin-like protein (slp1)], a Rab27a- and PtdIns(3,4,5)P3-binding protein, regulates the androgen-dependent secretion of PSAP and PSA in human LNCaP prostate carcinoma cells. Androgen-dependent PSAP secretion was significantly inhibited in cells that expressed the C2A domain of JFC1 [PtdIns(3,4,5)P3-binding-domain], but was unaffected by JFC1 overexpression. Conversely, PSA secretion was not inhibited by the C2A domain of JFC1. We show, using immunofluorescence analysis, that JFC1 co-localizes with PSAP, but rarely with PSA, in prostate granules, suggesting that JFC1 is part of the PSAP secretory machinery. However, PSA secretion was significantly increased in LNCaP cells that overexpressed JFC1, indicating that the secretion of PSA is susceptible to variations in the intracellular concentration of JFC1. Both PSAP and PSA secretion was increased by overexpression of wild-type Rab27a or the constitutively active Rab27aQ78L. The secretion of PSA was partially inhibited in the presence of LY294002, while the secretion of PSAP was completely abolished by the PI3K (phosphoinositide 3-kinase) inhibitor. This supports the view that PI3K plays a differential role in the secretion of prostate secretory markers. In conclusion, we present evidence that JFC1 differentially regulates the secretion of PSAP and PSA, and that Rab27a and PI3K play a central role in the exocytosis of prostate-specific markers.

Abstract Neutrophils kill microorganisms using microbicidal products that they release into the phagosome or the extracellular space. Mature neutrophils contain four types of exocytosable storage organelles: azurophilic granules that contain myeloperoxidase, specific granules, gelatinase granules and secretory vesicles. Since the uncontrolled release of the contents of these organelles is potentially harmful, granule exocytosis must be tightly regulated. However, the secretory machinery utilized by neutrophils is poorly characterized. Here, we evaluate the role of Rab27a and its effector JFC1 in the regulated secretion of granulocytes. First, we show that JFC1 and Rab27a are highly expressed in human neutrophils. Furthermore, in HL-60 promyelocytic cells, the expression of JFC1 and Rab27a dramatically increased when they are differentiated to neutrophil-like granulocytes by DMSO treatment, supporting a role for these proteins in the secretory machinery of granulocytes. We found that while Rab27a distribution is restricted to the membrane fraction after cell fractionation, JFC1 is distributed between the membrane fraction and the cytosol. The localization of Rab27a in neutrophils was confirmed by immuno-electron microscopy. Colocalization of endogenous JFC1 and Rab27a was observed by immunofluorescence analysis. After cell fractionation, JFC1 and Rab27a were mainly associated with the tertiary granules (γ fraction) which are enriched in MMP-9 and cytochrome b558. A small proportion of the myeloperoxidase-positive granules were also detected in this fraction. Both Rab27a and JFC1 colocalized with VAMP2, a marker of secretory vesicles. The introduction of the plasma membrane binding domain (C2A domain) of JFC1 into permeabilized neutrophils significantly decreased exocytosis, however, neither Rab27a nor JFC1 integrated to the phagolysosome when neutrophils were exposed to opsonized particles, suggesting that the granules implicated in cargo release towards the surrounding milieu are molecularly and mechanistically different from those involved in their release towards the phagolysosome.

Cytoskeleton remodeling is important for the regulation of vesicular transport associated with exocytosis, but a direct association between granular secretory proteins and actin-remodeling molecules has not been shown, and this mechanism remains obscure. Using a proteomic approach, we identified the RhoA-GTPase–activating protein Gem-interacting protein (GMIP) as a factor that associates with the Rab27a effector JFC1 and modulates vesicular transport and exocytosis. GMIP down-regulation induced RhoA activation and actin polymerization. Importantly, GMIP-down-regulated cells showed impaired vesicular transport and exocytosis, while inhibition of the RhoA-signaling pathway induced actin depolymerization and facilitated exocytosis. We show that RhoA activity polarizes around JFC1-containing secretory granules, suggesting that it may control directionality of granule movement. Using quantitative live-cell microscopy, we show that JFC1-containing secretory organelles move in areas near the plasma membrane deprived of polymerized actin and that dynamic vesicles maintain an actin-free environment in their surroundings. Supporting a role for JFC1 in RhoA inactivation and actin remodeling during exocytosis, JFC1 knockout neutrophils showed increased RhoA activity, and azurophilic granules were unable to traverse cortical actin in cells lacking JFC1. We propose that during exocytosis, actin depolymerization commences near the secretory organelle, not the plasma membrane, and that secretory granules use a JFC1- and GMIP-dependent molecular mechanism to traverse cortical actin.

Object Juxtafacet cysts (JFCs) in usual locations have recently been shown to have joint connections. The pathogenesis of JFCs in unusual locations has remained obscure. The authors hypothesize that all JFCs, including atypical ones, are joint derived. Methods In this study the authors sought to explain the occurrence and formation of clinical outliers of spinal JFCs. In Part I, they performed an extensive literature search to identify case reports of spinal intraneural cysts that have been unappreciated despite the fact that they should occur. In Part II, they studied far-lateral (extraforaminal) cysts treated at their institution and reported in the literature. The presence of a joint connection was specifically looked for since this finding has not been widely appreciated. Results In Part I, 3 isolated case reports of spinal intraneural JFCs without reported joint connections were identified: 2 involving L-5 and 1, C-8. In Part II, 6 cases involving patients with far-lateral JFCs treated at the authors' institution were reviewed and all 6 had joint connections. Two of these cases had been previously published, although their joint connections were not appreciated. In 2 of the newly reported cases, arthrography confirmed a communication between the facet and the cyst. Only 1 of 5 cases in the literature had a recognized joint connection. Conclusions The authors believe that all JFCs are joint derived. This explanation for intraneural and extraneural JFCs in typical locations would be consistent with the unified articular (synovial) theory and the pathogenesis for intraneural and extraneural ganglion cyst formation in the limbs. Facet joints appear no different from other synovial joints occurring elsewhere. Understanding the pathogenesis of these cysts will help target treatment to the joint, improve surgical outcomes, and decrease recurrences.

Abstract Evidence for cometary activity beyond Jupiter’s and Saturn’s orbits—such as that observed for Centaurs and long-period comets—suggests that the thermal processing of comet nuclei starts long before they enter the inner solar system, where they are typically observed and monitored. Such observations raise questions as to the depth of unprocessed material and whether the activity of Jupiter-family comets (JFCs) can be representative of any primitive material. Here we model the coupled thermal and dynamical evolution of JFCs, from the moment they leave their outer solar system reservoirs until their ejection into interstellar space. We apply a thermal evolution model to a sample of simulated JFCs obtained from dynamical simulations that successfully reproduce the orbital distribution of observed JFCs. We show that due to the stochastic nature of comet trajectories toward the inner solar system, all simulated JFCs undergo multiple heating episodes resulting in significant modifications of their initial volatile contents. A statistical analysis constrains the extent of such processing. We suggest that primordial condensed hypervolatile ices should be entirely lost from the layers that contribute to cometary activity observed today. Our results demonstrate that understanding the orbital (and thus, heating) history of JFCs is essential when putting observations in a broader context.

The secretory machinery utilized by neutrophils is poorly characterized. We show that the small GTPase Rab27a is an essential component of the secretory machinery of azurophilic granules in granulocytes. Rab27a-deficient mice have impaired secretion of MPO (myeloperoxidase) into the plasma in response to lipopolysaccharide. Cell fractionation analysis revealed that Rab27a and the Rab27a effector protein JFC1/Slp1 (synaptotagmin-like protein 1) are distributed principally in the low-density fraction containing a minor population of MPO-containing granules. By immunofluorescence microscopy, we detected Rab27a and JFC1/Slp1 in a minor subpopulation of MPO-containing granules. Interference with the JFC1/Slp1–Rab27a secretory machinery impaired secretion of MPO in permeabilized neutrophils. The expression of Rab27a was dramatically increased when promyelocytic HL-60 cells were differentiated into granulocytes but not when they were differentiated into monocytes. Down-regulation of Rab27a in HL-60 cells by RNA interference did not affect JFC1/Slp1 expression but significantly decreased the secretion of MPO. Neither Rab27a nor JFC1/Slp1 was integrated into the phagolysosome membrane during phagocytosis. Neutrophils from Rab27a-deficient mice efficiently phagocytose zymosan opsonized particles and deliver MPO to the phagosome. We conclude that Rab27a and JFC1/Slp1 permit MPO release into the surrounding milieu and constitute key components of the secretory machinery of azurophilic granules in granulocytes. Our results suggest that the granules implicated in cargo release towards the surrounding milieu are molecularly and mechanistically different from those involved in their release towards the phagolysosome.

FeI and NiI emission lines have recently been found in the spectra of 17 Solar System comets observed at heliocentric distances between 0.68 and 3.25 au and in the interstellar comet 2I/Borisov. The blackbody equilibrium temperature at the nucleus surface is too low to vaporize the refractory dust grains that contain metals, making the presence of iron and nickel atoms in cometary atmospheres a puzzling observation. Moreover, the measured NiI/FeI abundance ratio is on average one order of magnitude larger than the solar photosphere value. We report new measurements of FeI and NiI production rates and abundance ratios for the Jupiter-family comet (JFC) 46P/Wirtanen in its 2018 apparition and from archival data of the Oort-cloud comet (OCC) C/1996 B2 (Hyakutake). The comets were at geocentric distances of 0.09 au and 0.11 au, respectively. The emission line surface brightness was found to be inversely proportional to the projected distance to the nucleus, confirming that FeI and NiI atoms are ejected from the surface of the nucleus or originate from a short-lived parent. Considering the full sample of 20 comets, we find that the range of NiI/FeI abundance ratios is significantly larger in JFCs than in OCCs. We also unveil significant correlations between NiI/FeI and C2/CN, C2H6/H2O, and NH/CN. Carbon-chain- and NH-depleted comets show the highest NiI/FeI ratios. The existence of such relations suggests that the diversity of NiI/FeI abundance ratios in comets could be related to the cometary formation rather than to subsequent processes in the coma.

ABSTRACT We present orbital integrations for various Jupiter family comets (JFCs) in the 55 Cancri system. This star is known to possess (at least) five planets with masses ranging from super-Earth to Jupiter-type. Furthermore, according to observational constraints, there is a space without planets between ∼0.8 and ∼5.7 au, offering the principal possibility of habitable terrestrial planets, including long-term orbital stability. Hence, there is a stark motivation for the study of comets in the 55 Cnc system noting that comets are viewed a viable candidate mechanism for the delivery of water to Earth-type planets located in stellar habitable zones. However, our study shows that the duration of stability of JFC analogues in the 55 Cnc system is much shorter compared to comets in the Solar system owing to profound differences in the planetary structure of the systems. For example, between planet 55 Cnc-f and 55 Cnc-d, the comets do not undergo close cometary encounters akin to the Earth and Mars in the Solar system as the planetary masses in the 55 Cnc system are much larger than in the Solar system and therefore the comets are much less orbitally stable. Nevertheless, we expect an increased number of comet–planet encounters as well as cometary collisions in the 0.8/5.7 au gap. Future observations and additional theoretical studies are required to shed light on the possibility of habitable terrestrial planets in the 55 Cnc system, including the possible role(s) of exocomets in the facilitation of planetary habitability.

This article aims to analyze the representation of Jember culture in the Jember Fashion Carnival (JFC) using Stuart Hall's representation theory approach. The main concepts applied in this analysis are change and resistance, which are used to understand how cultural symbols are represented and interpreted in JFC. The data collection process was carried out through literature study. Where the data obtained comes from the results of research and scientific work of other people which is studied and then developed. Data analysis was carried out by combining the concepts of Stuart Hall's representation theory with the findings found in the JFC event. The results of the literature study analysis show that JFC is an important forum for representing Jember's cultural identity through costume modifications, dance, music and other performances. In addition, the media plays an important role in the spread and influence of these cultural representations. In the context of Stuart Hall's representation theory, change refers to the transformation of cultural symbols in the JFC, while resistance describes the process of building cultural representations through interactions and agreements between JFC actors, the government and society. Through this process, Jember's cultural identity is represented and interpreted in JFC events. The implication of the results of this research is the need for continuous support in developing and promoting Jember culture through collaborative efforts between the government, cultural actors and the community. In this case, JFC can be an effective means of strengthening and expanding understanding and appreciation of Jember's cultural identity.

This ethnography is an inquiry on the transcultural identity of Japanese-Filipino Children (JFC) who are situated in a multi-cultural context in the city of Tokyo, Japan. In theoretical sense, the analysis centers on culturally nomadic individuals who are active agents in the formation of their cultural identities, rather than being passive repository of social and cultural influences. The cultural identities of JFC are navigated within a transcultural milieu that is perpetuated by Japanese and Filipino cultural background of their parents. The salient cultural identities of JFC include being religious, sociable, hospitable, respectful to elders, patient, hopeful, humble, resilient, hardworking, innovative and resourceful, contented and happy, multilingual, and preference for Filipino food. These cultural identities are unique in contrast to pure Japanese children and correspondingly distinguish them as JFC in Tokyo. Myriad of social forces impinge on the process of cultural formation among JFC however; family, school, and church have played vital role in honing their cultural identities in a transcultural milieu.

We report on photometry and high-resolution spectroscopy of the chemically peculiar Jupiter-family comet (hereafter JFC) 21P/Giacobini-Zinner. Comet 21P is a well-known member of the carbon-chain-depleted family, but also displays a depletion of amines. We continuously monitored the comet over more than seven months with the two TRAPPIST telescopes (TN and TS), covering a wide heliocentric distance range from 1.60 au inbound to 2.10 au outbound with a perihelion at 1.01 au on September 10, 2018. We computed and followed the evolution of the dust- (represented by Afρ) and gas-production rates of the daughter species OH, NH, CN, C3, and C2 and their relative abundances to OH and to CN over the cometary orbit. We compared them to those measured in the previous apparitions. The activity of the comet and its water production rate reached a maximum of (3.72 ± 0.07) × 1028 mol s−1 on August 17, 2018 (rh = 1.07 au), 24 days before perihelion. The peak value of A(0)fρ was reached on the same date (1646 ± 13) cm in the red filter. Using a sublimation model for the nucleus, we constrained the active surface of the nucleus using the slow-rotator model. The abundance ratios of the various species are remarkably constant over a wide range of heliocentric distances before and after perihelion, showing a high level of homogeneity of the ices in the surface of the nucleus. The behaviour and level of the activity of the comet is also remarkably similar over the last five orbits. In the coma dust colour, 21P shows reflective gradients similar to JFCs. We obtained a high-resolution spectrum of 21P with UVES at ESO Very Large Telescope one week after perihelion. Using the CN B-X (0, 0) violet band, we measured 12C/13C and 14N/15N isotopic ratios of 100 ± 10 and 145 ± 10, respectively, both in very good agreement with the ratios commonly found in comets. We measured an ortho-para abundance ratio of NH3 of 1.16 ± 0.02, corresponding to a nuclear spin temperature of Tspin = 27 ± 1 K, which is similar to other comets. While the abundance ratios in the gaseous coma reveal a peculiar composition, the isotopic and ortho-to-para ratios appear entirely normal. We performed a dynamical simulation of 21P and found that it is likely a young member of the JFC population. We favour a pristine composition scenario to explain the chemical peculiarities of this comet.

Streszczenie:
The research identified the consumers’ awareness of CSR, consumers’ buying behavior relating to Jollibee Foods Corporation’s (JFC) Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs as well as to JFC as an organization, determined the relationship between consumers’ CSR awareness and consumer buying behavior, and ascertained differences in consumer buying behavior according to their socio-demographic classification. The study used descriptive research design, using self-administered questionnaires through purposive sampling method in the selection of respondents with a sample size of 250 consumers who participated in the survey. Data were statistically treated using mean, frequency, and percent distribution and standard deviation, chi-square, correlation, Kruskal-Wallis, and Mann-Whitney. Based on the findings, the researcher concludes that 25-34 years old consumers prefer Jollibee Foods brands as their fast-food preference. Females, those with Bachelor’s degrees, and are employed prefer JFC as well. The majority of respondents/consumers have knowledge on the topic at hand, thus they could be seen as the current audience of the CSR programs being done by JFC. It is highly commendable that JFC is conducting programs for the benefit of its targeted segments and communities, but consumers are not fully aware of these programs. Overall, consumers are most aware of other CSR programs done by JFC. Therefore, the researcher recommends creating a strategic CSR communication of JFC’s CSR programs to increase the awareness of consumers. It should capitalize on identified significant relationships between consumers’ CSR awareness and buying behavior to gain economic advantage.

This research departs from the phenomenon of media in constructing reality. The reality displayed by the media is judged as the real truth by the audience, but the reality that is displayed by the media is not a single truth. As the reality of the 18th JFC controversy in 2019 becomes an interesting topic to discuss with Halliday discourse analysis model. Thus, the purpose of this study is to describe the online media discourse about the JFC problems in Jember district. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach. The results of this study indicate that: 1) the mass media participate in the discourse of Muslim communication battles against reality through the construction of news in the mass media, especially online media; 2) The mass media, both electronic media and online media, talk about Cinta Laura Kiehl as one of the ambassadors whose appearance does not deserve to be displayed in the JFC event in media construction; and 3) the online media Bangsaonline.com and Potretjember.com talk about Cinta Laura Kiehl as an ambassador for the JFC event, which can damage the image of Jember as a city of students. Abstract We present a dynamical study of 39 active Centaurs and 17 high-perihelion (q > 4.5 au) Jupiter-family comets (JFCs) with a focus on investigating recent orbital changes as potential triggers for comet-like activity. We have identified a common feature in the recent dynamical histories of all active Centaurs and JFCs in our sample that is not present in the history of the majority of inactive population members: a sharp decrease in semimajor axis and eccentricity occurring within the past several hundred years prior to observed activity. We define these rapid orbital changes as “a-jumps.” Our results indicate that these orbital reshaping events lead to shorter orbital periods and subsequently greater average per-orbit heating of Centaur nuclei. We suggest that the a-jumps could therefore be a major trigger of cometary activity on Centaurs and JFCs. Our results further imply that analyses of the recent dynamical histories could be used to identify objects that are currently active or may become active soon, where we have identified three such Centaurs with recent a-jumps that should be considered high-priority targets for observational monitoring to search for activity.

Cell function requires the integration of cytoskeletal organization and membrane trafficking. Small GTP-binding proteins are key regulators of these processes. We find that EPI64, an apical microvillar protein with a Tre-2/Bub2/Cdc16 (TBC) domain that stabilizes active Arf6 and has RabGAP activity, regulates Arf6-dependent membrane trafficking. Expression of EPI64 in HeLa cells induces the accumulation of actin-coated vacuoles, a distinctive phenotype seen in cells expressing constitutively active Arf6. Expression of EPI64 with defective RabGAP activity does not induce vacuole formation. Coexpression of Rab8a suppresses the vacuole phenotype induced by EPI64, and EPI64 expression lowers the level of Rab8-GTP in cells, strongly suggesting that EPI64 has GAP activity toward Rab8a. JFC1, an effector for Rab8a, colocalizes with and binds directly to a C-terminal region of EPI64. Together this region and the N-terminal TBC domain of EPI64 are required for the accumulation of vacuoles. Through analysis of mutants that uncouple JFC1 from either EPI64 or from Rab8-GTP, our data suggest a model in which EPI64 binds JFC1 to recruit Rab8a-GTP for deactivation by the RabGAP activity of EPI64. We propose that EPI64 regulates membrane trafficking both by stabilizing Arf6-GTP and by inhibiting the recycling of membrane through the tubular endosome by decreasing Rab8a-GTP levels.

The main objective of this study is to investigate the influence of memorable festival experiences (MFEs) on revisit intention from the perspective of Arab visitors in the context of the Jerash Festival of Culture and Arts (JFCA) in Jordan. The quantitative research method was used in the research. Questionnaires were used to collect the data. Partial Least Square-Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) was used in the data analysis to test the research hypothesis. The study found that MFEs influence Arab visitors’ revisit intention. It also confirmed the validity of Event Experience Scale (EES) that constitutes four dimensions: affective engagement, cognitive engagement, physical engagement, and experiencing novelty, in the context of Arab visitors. Theoretical and managerial implications are discussed. Theoretically, the study provides insight into the influence of MFEs on Arab visitors’ revisit intentions. It also evaluates the reliability and validity of EES for the first time in the context of Arab cultural festivals. Practically, the study paved the way for JFCA organisers, planners, managers, and marketers to plan, develop, and market useful festival tourism strategies. It is also envisaged that the information obtained in this study will help promote the enhancement of visitors’ experiences at JFCA to attract and retain more visitors in the globally competitive event industry.

Abstract The Kuiper Belt objects (KBOs), the Centaurs, and the Jupiter-family comets (JFCs) form an evolutionary continuum of small outer solar system objects, and their study allows us to gain insight into the history and evolution of the solar system. Broadband photometry can be used to measure their phase curves, allowing a first-order probe into the surface properties of these objects, though limited telescope time makes measuring accurate phase curves difficult. We make use of serendipitous broadband photometry from the long-baseline, high-cadence Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System survey to measure the phase curves for a sample of 18 KBOs, Centaurs, and JFCs with unprecedentedly large data sets. We find phase curves with previously reported negative slopes become positive with increased data and are thus due to insufficient sampling of the phase-curve profile, and not a real physical effect. We search for correlations between phase-curve parameters, finding no strong correlations between any parameter pair, consistent with the findings of previous studies. We search for instances of cometary activity in our sample, finding a previously reported outburst by Echeclus and a new epoch of increased activity by Chiron. Applying the main belt asteroid HG 1 G 2 phase-curve model to three JFCs in our sample with large phase angle spans, we find their slope parameters imply surfaces more consistent with those of carbonaceous main belt asteroids than silicaceous ones.

Junk food consumption (JFC) is increasing and it is common mostly among schoolchildren and adolescents (SCA). The consequences of JFC have become a public health concern. The study aims to explore the factors associated with the JFC among SCA using the socioecological model (SEM). Electronic databases such as PubMed, Google Scholar, ResearchGate, and bibliographic references were used to obtain the related papers following the standard process of identification, screening, eligibility assessment, study quality assessment, and data extraction from the selected articles. Strengthening the reporting of observational studies in the epidemiological (STROBE) checklist was used to assess the quality standards of the papers. Out of the 785 papers, we synthesized the results from 22 quantitative articles based on merits. The findings of the study indicate that JFC behavior among the SCA is influenced by multilevel factors that extend from intrapersonal to public policy through interpersonal, organizational, and community levels. The results of the study suggest that more than two-thirds, more than one-third, near to one-third, and half of them supported with microsystem, mesosystem, exosystem, and macrosystem constructs of the SEM respectively. However, age, sex/gender, taste and pleasure of eating junk food, knowledge of junk food and attitude towards dietary choices of the microsystem (individual factors) and mass media exposure and marketing strategies of the macrosystem (public policy factors) remain the most influencing systems. The results indicate that individual and public policy level constructs are important to explaining JFC among the SCA. This implies that the researchers and policymakers need to consider multilevel factors while designing and implementing the school-based nutrition education programme to promote healthy dietary outcomes in the SCA.

Narrative is the essence of human form of communication. Jember Fashion Carnival (JFC) chose a fashion carnival as a medium for telling stories about social struggles that became his dream. This study focuses on how JFC builds a narrative story at each of its carnival events. So that this research is expected to be able to comprehensively explain how a carnival builds a narrative through a storytelling approach as an effort to revitalize the arts in order to maintain the sustainability of a tourism program. This study uses the theory of the narrative paradigm to explain how individuals create meaning in life through dialogue in various mediums. This study uses a qualitative approach, Case study Methode with interview techniques. Research informants are representatives of JFC management. The results of the study show that the way JFC builds its main narrative is by appointing the figure of Dynand Fariz himself as the founder. This is because Dynand Fariz forms his figure as a narrator who tells a story about himself and manifests all his thoughts in all carnival events. The story about the figure of Dynand Fariz melts into a series of carnival defiles that describe the ideals, dreams, and struggles to return the carnival to its essence as an art performance.

Listening to a conversation demands comprehension, attention and prediction. To better understand the impact of these demands, as well as how hearing aids might alleviate them, a conversational listening test should be realistic, repeatable and relatable (i.e., have interpretable units). A test that potentially satisfies these needs is the just-follow conversation (JFC) task, where the listener adjusts the signal level to where they can understand, with effort, the gist of what is being said in a background of noise. Fifty-four participants sat in the centre of a circular loudspeaker array and adjusted the overall level of one monologue, one dialogue, two monologues or two dialogues presented in the front hemifield to where they could just follow the speech four times per trial. Signals were presented in surrounding fixed-level café and same-spectrum noise backgrounds. Bilateral hearing-aid users adjusted aided and unaided; non-users repeated each condition to evaluate reliability. Results showed an increase in JFC for dialogues re monologues. Individual JFC SNRs correlated with SSQ12 speech subscale scores as well as pure-tone threshold averages. JFC reliability was comparable to more objective speech understanding measures, but it may not be suitable to capture perceived conversational benefits for more subtle changes in hearing-aid processing.
