Streszczenie:
Introduction. The situation in non-Han territories of the Qing Empire that preceded the Xinhai Revolution of 1911 was quite tense. Outer Mongolia became the scene of growing impatience with the dominance of the Manchu administration and Chinese merchants, which attested to weak positions of the Qing dynasty in the region. In the meantime, the Russian Empire in every way available increased its political and economic influence on Outer Mongolia. Goals and Objectives. The article studies the relationships between the religious leader of Mongolia Jebtsundamba Khutukhtu and the new appointee of the Qing Empire Amban Sando. Sando proved a supporter of the ‘new policy’ who had served as a Manchu official in South China, and then spent seven years in Japan. Immediately prior to Urga, he had been ruling the Tumet Banners. The research objectives set include as follows: review of Amban Sando’s activities between his arrival to Urga in February 1910 to April 1910; insight into the March 1910 Urga unrest of Buddhist priests; analysis of interpersonal relationships between Jebtsundamba Khutukhtu and Sando. Somewhat secondary tasks are to analyze reactions of Jebtsundamba Khutukhtu and the Mongolian population to the departure of the 13th Dalai Lama to India in 1910; to consider the problem of the emerged rebel detachment led by Togtokho from Inner to Outer Mongolia. Materials. The work analyzes reports by Russian Consul General in Urga Ya. Shishmarev housed by the Archive of Foreign Policy of the Russian Empire. The study also examines some Mongolian and Russian research works. Conclusions. According to Ya. Shishmarev, Sando was supporting China’s reforms and entered the Urga office with all his might. The reports inform the relationships between Sando and Jebtsundamba Khutukhtu were tough since the very beginning, and they worsened after the March 1910 Urga unrest largely joined by Buddhist monks. The Russian official concludes Jebtsundamba Khutukhtu was quite satisfied with the 13th Dalai Lama’s departure towards India, and reports that the border Mongolian population was supporting Togtokho’s rebel detachment from Inner Mongolia.

Chinggis Khan is the single most important icon or historical figure of Mongolia but the next most important icon, for many generations was the Jebtsundamba khutukhtu (hubilgan, incarnation or “Living Buddha”) of Urga.1 The 8th Jebtsundamba, as a symbol of both religious and secular power or unity in Mongolia, weathered the storm of China’s 1911 Revolution, and Russia’s 1917 Revolution. Then during the early period of the Communist Revolution in Mongolia (1921), northern Mongolia became the first satellite of the Soviet Union and because the Jebtsundamba wielded enormous traditional influence among the people he was retained by communist leaders during a transition in the revolution in Mongolia. The article discusses the brief history and current state of three early monasteries of the first Jebtsundamba Khutukhtu Zanabazar (1635—1723): Shankhyn-khiid, Tuvkhun-khiid, and Erdene-khambyn-khiid (Högnö-khan's-khiid), located in the Uvurkhangai and Bulgan aimags of Mongolia. The material for the article is based on the results of field research conducted by the authors in 2022. Documents and various published sources in Mongolian language, including interviews, were also used. The role of the traditional Buddhist monastery system, which played a significant role in the life of Mongolia and its people, is shown in historical retrospect. Modern processes of restoring social functions of monasteries in society are analyzed. Three monasteries belonging to the category of gegen or khutukhtu’s, founded by Undur-gegen, are studied. Methods of historical and topographical analysis of sacred objects of monasteries included observation, comparative historical, historical and biographical, as well as source studies methods. The authors conclude that the most complete history is that of the Barun-khure monastery since it was not only the residence of Undur-gegen and a religious object but also a large cultural, educational, and socio-economic center. It is claimed that partial reconstruction of monasteries is currently underway, and Buddhist traditions are being revived in accordance with modern realities.

Introduction. The article deals with an item contained in the Buddhist Collection of Tatarstan’s National Museum. Buddhist art is essentially canonical, which sets forth some difficulties to be faced when it comes to refer certain pieces to different regional schools. Goals. The paper attempts a comparative analysis of the Buddhist statuette from the National Museum of Tatarstan and suggests an attribution of the unique item. Results. The analysis shows the figurine (inv. no. КП-10367/9) depicts a Mongolian Lama. It is headdress that proves a most significant element since the former is characteristic of Jebtsundamba Khutuktus of Khalkha. So, our further insights do attest to the statuette depicts a Bodg Gegeen of Mongolia. And there is reason to presume this is an early sculptural portrait of the 8th Bodg Gegeen — Jebtsundamba Khutuktu of Khalkha.

Streszczenie:
This article intends to publish two Mongolian manuscripts from the Mongolian ritual manuscripts project (Masaryk University) representing two ritual genres rarely occurring among Mongolian texts: an offering text (mchod pa, sang) related to the veneration of the mountain Dasibalbar in contemporary Khentei aimag and the text for the “stability of life” (zhabs brtan, ölmei batudqaqu) of the newly recognized Fifth Jebtsundamba Khutuktu which was addressed to him before his arrival to Mongolia. Both texts are linked by the common time of their creation about the arrival of the Fifth Jebtsundamba Khutuktu (1815–1841) to Khalkha. The paper includes transcription and translation of the texts accompanied by commentaries about the genres they represent and circumstances of their composition. The article raises questions about bilingualism and the role of Mongolian in the Buddhist ritual.

Introduction. The 1920s–1930s in Mongolia still give rise to occasional academic debates. And the period does deserve close attention at least due to the ambiguous nature of the then events — complicated, problematic, and largely controversial. The collection of archival materials titled ‘Federal Security Service Archives: Mongolia Documented, 1922– 1936’ deals with this very era. Goals. The paper seeks to review documents housed in the Central Archives of Russia’s Federal Security Service and relating to the 8th Jebtsundamba Khutuktu (Bogd Gegeen) — the last Khan of Mongolia — in the harsh times between the emergence of the national-liberation movement (1911) and the theocrat’s death (1924). Materials. The analyzed official records comprise special messages, coded telegrams, letters, and reports on the 8th Bodg Gegeen’s activities in Mongolia. Some documents deal with reincarnation search arrangements and the movement for restoration of theocracy. Results. The discovered files may significantly contribute to the understanding of the theocrat’s deeds in Mongolia.

Streszczenie:
Introduction. Traditional Buddhist communities are well aware of prominent Buddhist scholars to have further disseminated and developed the Buddha’s Teaching. The most famous are Dalai and Panchen Lamas. Since the beginnings of Buddhism’s prevalence in Mongolia, it is Bogd Gegeen who is revered most of all nationwide. To date, there have been nine reincarnations of Bogd Gegeen that immensely contributed to the development of Buddhism in the country. Goals. The paper seeks to analyze visits of the 9th Bogd Gegeen Jebtsundamba Khutuktu to the Volga Kalmyks (as members of the Mongolian world) and his delivered teachings. Results. The article highlights key points of the Bogd Gegeen’s biography, narrates about his six visits to Kalmykia in the late 1900s and early 2000s. Special focus is laid on that most significant efforts to arrange the visits were undertaken by Kalmykia’s government executives and Shajin Lama Telo Tulku Rinpoche. Those events proved fruitful enough and facilitated further strengthening of Buddhism in the region.

Streszczenie:
Introduction. Jebtsundamba Khutuktu Öndör Gegeen Zanabazar was Mongolia’s first ruler to hold both secular and spiritual power. In the late 17th century, the country witnessed dramatic internecine wars, and his overriding goal was to unify the nation and increase the educational level. Virtually all his self-portraits discovered depict Zanabazar as a real priest with iconographic markers of Buddha Vajrasattva. The selected Buddhist symbol is supposed to deliver a deepest nonverbal sermon and mysterious testament of the prominent Buddhist master. Goals. The paper seeks to further reveal, examine, and describe objects of artistic heritage authored by Öndör Gegeen Zanabazar and currently stored in state, public, administrative, and private collections of Mongolia and Russia. Results. The work is a first attempt to examine Zanabazar’s self-portraits — both sculptural and graphic ones (including tiny elements of different thangkas) — in their structural unity in the context of his meditative practices. The descriptions of the pictures compiled with due regard of Buddha Vajrasattva-related tantric texts and facts of Öndör Gegeen’s biography may be viewed as sources for historical and art studies in Vajrayana Buddhism. The analysis of textual and graphic materials attempts to interpret Zanabazar’s unique position as both a spiritual and Buddhist arts master.

Streszczenie:
Sergey Kuzmin’s paper draws on Russian and Mongolian archives to discuss the relationship between the Thirteenth Dalai Lama and the Jebtsundamba Khutagtu in the context of their joint hopes for future independence. This was promoted by the prevalence of Tibetan Buddhism in Mongolia, the leadership of the Tibetan-born Jetsun Dampa Khutuktu, the influential Tibetan colony in the Mongolian capital of Niislel Khuree, and permanent contacts between Mongols and Tibetans. It demonstrates how the two states co-ordinated their independence struggle during the first half of the twentieth century. This association continued after the two states had broken away from China and continued into the 1930s, with individual Tibetan hierarchs becoming involved in local resistance to the Socialist suppression of Buddhism in Mongolia.
