Amid all the publicity surrounding the release of the film of J. R. R. Tolkien's The Fellowship of the Ring, it has occasionally been mentioned that Tolkien was an English professor. What is rather less well known is that in 1919 and 1920, at the very start of his career, Tolkien worked on the staff of the Oxford English Dictionary; he later said of this time that he ‘learned more in those two years than in any other equal period of my life’.

Andoni Cossio proposes in a recent article the addition of The Equatorie of the Planetis (c. 1393) in MS Peterhouse 75.I to “Section A” of Oronzo Cilli’s Tolkien’s Library: An Annotated Checklist (2019). However, Cossio fails to specify the folios of MS Peterhouse 75.I to which the photostats in Tolkien VC 277 correspond. A detailed descriptive list of the photostats that J. R. R. Tolkien received from Derek J. Price could be useful in the understanding of the type of assistance Tolkien offered to Price and R. M. Wilson at the time they were preparing an edition of The Equatorie of the Planetis(1955). This note will supply that missing information as well as speculate about the nature of Tolkien’s contribution to the project and its implications. Tolkien devoted considerable attention to the study of Geoffrey Chaucer’s language, and he may have been aware, after careful examination of The Equatorie of the Planetis, that its attribution to Chaucer rested on inconclusive evidence. This view of course would have challenged Price and Wilson’s assumptions and it may explain why we know so little about Tolkien’s involvement.

Tolkien represents these unpromising tendencies of modern democracy and capitalism in his hobbits, but his work asserts wholeheartedly that virtuous heroism is still possible in our time. In an age when morale in public administration is at its nadir, Tolkien's hobbits provide the basis for a new optimism among those who serve.

J. R. R. Tolkien, known for originating “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy is one of the most acclaimed authors of fantasy literature whose work has captured the imagination of people of all ages and backgrounds. It is evident that through his work, Tolkien is able to kindle in the hearts of his readers desire for a new world and adventures. In the article, the aim is to focus on Tolkien’s ideas on fantasy illustration as relayed in his essays and letters to understand how illustrators may enliven feelings of wonder as Tolkien has done with his words. The style he has employed to create his own illustrations, his criteria for selecting illustrations to be published with his works, why he was partial to the illustrations of Pauline Baynes and the similar qualities found in the works of John Howe, who is one of the most widely recognized illustrators of Tolkien’s work is discussed. Through this study, the essence of the works of Tolkien that have such a strong impact on readers and the qualities that fantasy illustrations of today should possess in the pursuit of creating a desirable “Secondary World” for the readers’ imaginations to enter may be discovered. I 1975 kommenterede Andreas Haarder Malones bemærkninger og hævdede, at Tolkiens konklusioner var hans egne. Este artigo faz um estudo comparativo entre o conceito de “contos de fadas” do filólogo inglês J.R.R. Tolkien e a noção de “narrativa” do crítico alemão Walter Benjamin, demonstrando uma relação de afinidade entre as duas ideias. Para tanto, são empregados dois textos como núcleo da reflexão: a conferência Sobre contos de fadas, de Tolkien, e o texto clássico de Benjamin intitulado O Narrador. A partir da análise das semelhanças e diferenças entre os contos de fadas e a narrativa, com enfoque na associação entre literatura fantástica e público infantil, na capacidade dessas histórias de aconselhar e em sua relação com as ideias de mito e natureza, foi possível determinar quanto esses termos se sobrepõem, muito embora os autores nunca tenham dialogado em vida. No fim das contas, ao contrário do que Benjamin afirmava em seu texto, a forma de comunicação engendrada pela figura dos narradores não desapareceu século XX adentro, mas experimentou uma renovação literária no trabalho de autores como Tolkien, que preservaram características da narrativa nos contos de fadas contemporâneos.

In recent years, the legendary Hong Kong author Jin Yong has been referred to in Anglophone media as ‘China's Tolkien’, but the basis for that comparison has been disregarded by Sinologists for valid reasons. However, the very establishment of the comparison, even on questionable grounds, may be a stroke of serendipity. This essay probes the Tolkien-Jin Yong comparison from a literary perspective, arguing that the comparison is often made on the basis of fundamental misconceptions, but that it is nevertheless serendipitously apt for reasons that have remained unexplored. Identifying Jin Yong and Tolkien as influential modern literary medievalists, the essay shifts the Tolkien-Jin Yong comparison from the problematic terrain of genre to the firmer ground of medievalist antiquarianism, with important implications for questions of cultural identity, historical reconstruction and narrative form.

J. R. R. Tolkien is undoubtedly one of the most widely read epic fiction writers, translated into almost forty world languages. His works describe the entire history of an imaginary world, from the very beginning of its creation until the creation of man and are imbued with a constant struggle between good and evil. On the opposite sides, there are different races of humanoid creatures, among which are: elves, dwarves, orcs, goblins, trolls, etc. They all have elaborate genealogies and cultural characteristics. The extremely rich philological education of the author himself contributed to that. The connections between Tolkien’s work and Nordic myths have been shown in detail in science so far. This is most obvious when choosing mythological symbols and names. The author even created an elven language inspired by the Finnish language, for which he used runic alphabet. However, the names of the places where orcs, goblins and other servants of evil live, as well as their personal names, were not created after the example of elves. According to their phonetic characteristics, these names are significantly different from elven and human ones. In this paper, attention will be focused on such names, considering that they possess phonetic and semantic characteristics of the Turkish language, especially its older variants, and that they carry certain meanings that still exist in the modern Turkish language.

I attended all the lectures C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien gave in 1948 to 1951. My own teaching of English Renaissance literature at Birmingham University was informed by Lewis’s volume in the Oxford History of English Literature (1954), parts of which I had heard him give as lectures. At Birmingham we started a series of Medieval and Renaissance texts, and I wrote to Lewis and ask him if he would be our General Editor; he said, yes. He asked me to meet him, correspondence followed, and I quote from a long, witty, and wise letter about an edition of mine, and about another edition which Lewis disliked and I also quote from that sharper letter. I knew Tolkien because, as an undergraduate I attended his weekly seminars. At that time he himself was greatly interested in Ancrene Wisse and the Katherine Group. He lectured on Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. Much later, in 1972, I met Tolkien again, at a book-launch party. I ventured to speak to him. I gave my name, and in his charming way he said he remembered me. I wondered at that, but took it as evidence of his kindness.

Este artículo consiste en un análisis de la traducción de Beowulf realizada por Tolkien en 1926. El objetivo es explorar las modificaciones que su proceso traductológico aplica a la aliteración, los kennings y los arcaísmos, rasgos estilísticos esenciales en la poesía anglosajona. Estos cambios resultan inevitables dadas 1) las diferencias entre las convenciones poéticas anglosajonas y el habla y la literatura inglesa contemporánea, y 2) las necesidades de la audiencia meta de Tolkien, sus alumnos en Oxford. Aun así, dichos cambios persiguen el propósito principal de Tolkien, que, influido por las ideas del New Criticism y el Modernismo, pretende mantener en la traducción el valor estético de los tres rasgos estilísticos mencionados. Seguimos la perspectiva teórica de Bassnett (1998) para indicar que la definición tradicional de ‘traducción’ como ‘copia’ del original no es suficiente para calificar la traducción de Tolkien: las innovaciones aplicadas convierten la traducción en un nuevo ‘original’.

English scientist J. Tolkien became world-famous as the creator of the fantasy genre and the author of the epic novel «The Lord of the Rings» which has overgrown the measures of a novel having become a cultural phenomena and causing cultural movement. His works – «The Lord of the Rings» and «The Hobbit» have already been analyzed in the light of the genre novelty. The purpose of this paper is to enlighten the ways of the embodiment of philosophical concepts of the image of the world tree in J. Tolkien’s creative work. The methodology includes literature review related to the topic; methods of analysis, classification and comparative analysis. The image of the tree is analyzed as one of the universal symbols of the spiritual culture. It unites the Earth with the heaven, defines the human’s way to oneself, to spiritual summits. In the works of J. R. R. Tolkien the tree isn’t just a detail but also a character, the symbol of the eternal life circulation. Symbolizing the synthesis of heaven, earth and water, the dynamics of life, combining the worlds, the tree in the creation of J. Tolkien is a complex archetypal derivative that accumulates feminine as a source of life, male as a defender of the genus. The Trees of Valinor, lone tree-pastors, the creations of Niggl are characterized by the synthesis of cosmogonic and solar aspects. The depth of the perception of the artist («The Leaf by Niggle») the writer transforms into world creation. Niggle works much on details, but dreams of drawing the whole tree. The artist is inspired by a picture of a living tree, the embodiment of the mythological universe. It is concluded that the close relationship between the creator and creation is a reflection of the ancient beliefs about man and the tree as indivisible unity, that the tree could become a friend, a «twin brother» of a man, the incarnation of his soul.

The tree is one of the universal symbols of the spiritual culture. It unites the Earth with the heaven, defines the human’s way to oneself, to spiritual summits. In the works of J. R. R. Tolkien the tree isn’t just a detail but also a character, the symbol of the eternal life circulation. Symbolizing the synthesis of heaven, earth and water, the dynamics of life, combining the worlds, the tree in the creation of Tolkien is a complex archetypal derivative that accumulates feminine as a source of life, male as a defender of the genus. Being fond of Welsh and Finnish, Scandinavian and Celtic mythology, Tolkien used the elements of the latter to build a model of his own artistic world. But being a Christian, he could not implement his ideas into the Universe without a god. God is present in the work of Tolkien, though remains invisible. The artistic world of many works is built around a tree, which is not only a biblical image, but also a part of the social subconscious, archetype. The close relationship between the creator and creation is a reflection of the ancient beliefs about man and the tree as indivisible unity, that the tree could become a friend, a «twin brother» of a man, the incarnation of his soul. The tree becomes the creating centre of the main character’s own universe, the logical conclusion of the artist's life search. Not only mastery, but the power of the author's imagination is in the focus of the writer's attention.

Tolkien was a prolific translator, although most of his translation work was not actually published during his lifetime, as occurred with the greater part of his fiction. He never did any serious translation from modern foreign languages into English, but rather devoted himself to the task of turning Old English and Middle English poetry into something that could be readily understood by speakers of the modern idiom. His largest and best-known published translation is of the anonymous 14th Century poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, which was published posthumously with two other translations from Middle English in the volume Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Pearl and Sir Orfeo (Allen & Unwin 1975). The translation of Middle English texts constitutes the bulk of his output in this field, both in the above volume and in the fragments that appear in his lectures and essays. However, his heart really lay in the older, pre-Norman form of the language, and particularly in the greatest piece of literature to come down to us from the Old English period, the epic poem Beowulf.

Tras el éxito de The Lord of the Rings (1954-1955), las primeras traducciones de la obra de Tolkien empezaron a propagarse por todo el mundo. Sin embargo, Tolkien, filólogo y traductor de obras del inglés antiguo e inglés medio, se vio en la necesidad de indicar cómo traducir los nombres ficcionales presentes en su obra, integrados en una complicada red genealógica de lenguas tanto reales como ficcionales. De estas notas sobre la traducción («The Nomenclature of The Lord of the Rings»), además de desprenderse indicaciones filológicas para la traducción de su obra, se puede analizar asimismo la postura de Tolkien sobre la traducción, que puede a su vez relacionarse con la reflexión traductológica actual sobre los diferentes métodos de traducir. En efecto, se observa que la postura de Tolkien pasa de ser en un principio marcadamente «extranjerizante» o «hacia el autor» (siguiendo la terminología de Venuti y Schleiermacher) para finalmente defender un método más «naturalizante» o «hacia el receptor». Sin embargo, conviene tener en cuenta la importancia de la función y el contexto de producción, por lo que es preciso actualizar la postura de Tolkien sobre la traducción en relación con teorías descriptivas que negocian el valor de la equivalencia.

J. R. R. Tolkien’s representation of women in his fiction has generated a number of controversies since its original publication. This essay examines two major issues: an evasiveness in Tolkien’s treatment of sexual violence against women that is not disconnected from a gendered terror that underlies several moments in his works and functions to link women’s sexuality and desiring with death. Specifically, we read the author’s depiction of Shelob and her appetitive, arachnoid monstrosity as at once displacing sexual violence onto the monstrous feminine and evoking a revulsion at the aging female body. We next explore the consequences of the author’s depictions of women and his handling of sexual violence in close connection with his own 1939 public performance of Chaucer’s Reeve’s Tale, a comic narrative turning on two rapes that Tolkien nevertheless conceals in a comparable fashion to his elision of sexual violence in Middle-earth.

La cautivante obra de J. R. R. Tolkien nos dejó un increíble mundo de fantasías, mitos y poesías, mediante la cual se puede vislumbrar la fascinante belleza de la realidad. Una de esas realidades es la muerte del hombre que sólo se entiende desde la vida vivida, desde la obra incompleta, desde el mandato de destruir el anillo -“mi tesoro”- con las debilidades de la propia naturaleza humana. El análisis hermenéutico a esta concisa historia se complementa con otros trabajos de Tolkien, de su amigo C.S. Lewis, de referentes como San Juan de la Cruz y Dante Alighieri, entre otros. La exégesis de este texto nos permite develar la existencia de un trasfondo de procesos psicológicos que buscan el sentido más profundo de la muerte a través del mito basado en las creencias religiosas. Creencias que están lejos de la comprensión racional y que solo se pueden entender a través de “parábolas”. Nuevamente la esperanza es un elemento que atraviesa y da sentido a la vida iluminando a la razón en aquellos oscuros y recónditos pasajes, donde el hombre moderno se encuentra sin argumentos. El bien y los valores del hombre frente al bien y a los valores de un mundo que ha perdido el norte, pero que, sin embargo, se cree trascendente frente a la efímera vida y obra de “un pobre hombre llamado Niggle” (Tolkien, 1999, p. 65).

J. R. R. Tolkien (1892-1973) es conocido sobre todo por sus obras literarias, especialmente por El hobbit y El señor de los anillos. Estas han sido objeto de estudiopor parte de disciplinas dispares como la filosofía, la psicología, la teología o la literatura. Sin embargo, hasta hace unos años apenas existían trabajos científicos sobre las lenguas artificiales que propiciaron la aparición de estos relatos. En este trabajo, se estudia la afición de Tolkien por las lenguas y su labor como inventor de sistemas lingüísticos artificiales. En segundo lugar, mostramos cómo este autor mantuvo su actividad como creador de lenguas en secreto y cómo reveló este escondido oficio ante una audiencia de eruditos y filólogos. Finalmente, se destacan algunos de los principios de su invención lingüística y cómo influye en esta el contexto académico de principios del siglo XX. Este estudio nos permite concluir que estos diseños lingüísticos, con sus reglas y excepciones, representan el espejo en el que se reflejan las cambiantes ideas lingüísticas de un apasionado del lenguaje.

This article discusses how ‘believing’ works in Tolkien spirituality, a fiction-based religious milieu that uses J. R. R. Tolkien’s narratives, in particular The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion, as authoritative texts. Members of this milieu engage in ritual communication with the supernatural beings from Tolkien’s universe, including the elves and the Valar (gods). After presenting the history of Tolkien spirituality and describing the main groups, I develop a model for analysing religious rationalisation. By this term I refer to the process through which theology is developed within religious traditions as a second-order reflection on ritual practices and authoritative narratives. I demonstrate that contrary to what one might expect the strategies of religious rationalisation in Tolkien spirituality are not that different from what we see in other new religions. While one might think that members of fiction-based religions (can) believe only in a cautious and playful manner, practitioners of Tolkien spirituality in fact tend to believe literally and to legitimise their beliefs with supposed proof. It is striking, however, that they tend to believe in a ‘cosmological’ rather than in a ‘historical’ mode, i.e. they believe in the existence of the Valar as spiritual beings, but not in the historical factuality of Tolkien’s narratives. In this sense, Tolkien spirituality may be a good illustration of a broader ‘dehistoricising turn’ in contemporary religion. The development of reflective beliefs in Tolkien spirituality is further shown to be governed by three principles that together seek to reduce tension between conflicting ideas within the tradition and to strike a balance between fabulousness and plausibility. It is suggested that these three principles of belief elaboration govern religious rationalisation also in other religious traditions, at least in traditions with a low level of institutionalisation.

A narrativa presente em O Hobbit, de J. R. R. Tolkien, é composta por variadas canções que dialogam com a história em desenvolvimento. Essa conexão é importante pois promove uma comunicação conteudística entre os poemas e o romance. Assim sendo, objetivamos, neste artigo, investigar as relações existentes entre os dois gêneros numa perspectiva dialógica. Mostraremos como o conteúdo dos poemas relacionam-se com os fatos da narrativa. Utilizaremos, principalmente, como aporte teórico, os trabalhos de Bakhtin (1992) e (2015), acerca do dialogismo entre os diferentes discursos, e dos gêneros intercalados, e o trabalho de Brait (2005) concernente também ao dialogismo. Selecionamos duas canções e analisamos os conteúdos dos seus poemas. Após a análise, compreendemos que os poemas são fundamentais para a dinâmica interna do romance, dialogando em muitos pontos com ele, dando suporte na apresentação dos fatos narrados.

Having spent countless hours in my youth reading and re-reading J. R. R. Tolkien lore, it was hard for me to miss Adrian Hogendoorn’s appropriation of the subtitle of Tolkien’s most accessible work. Tolkien published The Hobbit in 1937 with the subtitle There and Back Again as a children’s adventure novel, detailing the quest of Bilbo Baggins, his 13 dwarfish companions, and the wizard, Gandalf. The quest to reclaim the kingdom and treasure of the Lonely Mountain begins and ends in Bilbo’s sleepy, but respectable hobbit-hole, Bag End. Although Bilbo eventually returns home to Bag End, his journey there and back again has profoundly changed him, and in more ways than just making him inordinately wealthy. According to Tolkien lore, Bilbo recorded his adventures for posterity in The Red Book of Westmarch, which became Tolkien’s source for The Hobbit. Likewise, Hogendoorn’s Principles of Learning (PoL) wiki contributions illuminate episodes of his learning journey. He makes the connections between moments of learning in courses and specific wiki entries in his wikiography. I am slightly envious of his use of the wiki and the wikiography as a capstone project for his MEd studies. This “off-label use” of the wikiography seems to be a brilliant means of further entrenching the learning of his program of studies.
