ABSTRACT INTRODUCTIONIndigenous peoples’ rights include the right to self-determine one’s identity. For Māori, this includes self-assignment of ethnicity, and traditional identities such as Iwi (tribe). New Zealand’s Ministry of Health requires health services to collect ethnicity data using standard protocols. Iwi data are also collected by some health services; however, with no health-specific protocols, little is known about Iwi data collection and quality. The National Hauora Coalition (NHC) Primary Healthcare Organisation (PHO) sought to understand Iwi data collection across its network of primary care providers. AIMTo understand Iwi data collection at the NHC PHO; specifically, is it being routinely collected, how is it being collected and what are the results? METHODSIn 2017, NHC’s general practice clinics were invited to submit their enrolment forms, which capture ethnicity and potentially Iwi information, by e-mail to the audit team. Forms were reviewed to determine whether Iwi information was being collected and if so, what question was being used. Iwi numbers were collated from the annual data extract. RESULTSThirty-three of a total of 35 clinics (94%) submitted their enrolment forms to the audit team. Nine of the 33 clinics (27%) sought Iwi name/s with a specific question on their enrolment form. Six different ‘Iwi’ questions were used by the nine clinics. The data extract revealed that the NHC had Iwi data for 13% (2672/20,814) of its Māori enrolments. Ngāpuhi were the largest Iwi group at the NHC. DISCUSSIONThis is the first study to describe the quantity and quality of Iwi data collection in NZ primary care. Standard procedures for collecting, recording and using Iwi data are being developed by the NHC PHO. These could inform national protocols to optimise the quality of Iwi data.

Various Web systems and services currently provide a great deal of benefits to users, with Web interaction becoming increasingly important in research and business. Such Web interaction has been realized through related technologies as interaction design, interactive information retrieval, interactive intelligent systems, personalization, user interfaces and interactive machine learning. However, each study and development in such different fields has been done independently, which might discourage us from studying Web interaction from an unified view of human-system interaction and making Web interaction more intelligent by applying AI and computational intelligence. Guest Editors (Seiji Yamada, Tsuyoshi Murata, and Yasufumi Takama) organized an Intelligent Web Interaction Workshop 2009 (IWIf09) in Milano, Italy, last year to bring together researchers in diversified fields including Web systems, AI, computational intelligence, humancomputer interaction and user interfaces. Held jointly with 2009 IEEE/WIC/ACM International Conference on Web Intelligence (WI-2009), IWIf09 produced 14 outstanding papers - an acceptance rate of 50%, and active discussions among speakers and participants. A subsequent workshop Intelligent Web Interaction Workshop 2010 (IWIf10) will be held in Toronto, Canada in this September. This special issue presents intelligent Web interaction as a new and promising research field. Speakers selected from among those at IWIf09 were encouraged to submit papers for this issue. The submissions were then reviewed for relevance, originality, significance and presentation based on JACIII review criteria. This special issue consists of five papers which describe excellent studies on Web interface, Web systems, Web credibility, constrained clustering for interactive Web application and graph analysis on the Web. The acceptance rate was 56%. All papers introduce promising approaches and interesting results that readers will find inspiring. We strongly believe intelligent Web interaction has tremendous potential as a new, active field of research, and we hope this issue will motivate researchers to expand studies on intelligent Web interaction.

This article identifies and explores how the internalised racism of racial minority clients is identified and treated clinically by white psychotherapists. Four psychotherapists, who selfidentified as “white”, participated in semi-structured interviews, exploring their perceptions and understandings of how internalised racism and racism manifested within the clinical setting. The data from these interviews was analysed using thematic analysis and produced four main themes: manifestations of internalised racism and racism in therapy, disidentification, therapist’s explicitness, and connection to culture. These themes were supported and anchored by four sub-themes. The themes represent a therapeutic process of: emergence, understanding, intervention and aim. The emergence of racism and internalised racism in therapy describes both the clients’ and the psychotherapists’ experiences of internalised racism and racism as it emerges in the therapeutic encounter. Dis-identification captures the psychotherapists’ understanding of internalised racism operating as their minority clients’ dis-identification with their racial and cultural heritage. Therapist’s explicitness identifies a therapeutic intervention, the psychotherapist’s communication to their minority clients about the racial differences between them. And finally, connection to culture captures the psychotherapist’s therapeutic aim of encouraging a connection to racial and cultural heritage as a protective factor against racism and emotional and psychological difficulties. Abstract Gastrointestinal (GI) illnesses are associated with various environmental factors, such as water quality, stormwater runoff, agricultural runoff, sewer overflows, and wastewater treatment plant effluents. However, rather than assessing an individual factor alone, two indices incorporating a combination of ecological and environmental stressors were created to represent (1) overall watershed integrity, Index of Watershed Integrity (IWI) and (2) catchment integrity, Index of Catchment Integrity (ICI). These indices could provide a more comprehensive understanding of how watershed/catchment integrity potentially impact the rates of GI illness, compared to assessing an individual stressor alone. We utilized the IWI and ICI, as well as agricultural and urban land uses, to assess associations at the county level with the rates of GI illness in a population of adults over 65 years of age. Our findings demonstrated that both watershed and catchment integrity are associated with reduced hospitalizations for any GI outcomes, though association varied by urbanicity. We believe that improved versions of the IWI and ICI may potentially be useful indicators for public health analyses in other circumstances, particularly when considering rural areas or to capture the complex stressors impacting the ecological health of a watershed.

Abstract Ion–Weibel instability (IWI) is an important mechanism of generating a magnetic field in supernova remnants; it plays a key role in the generation of high-energy cosmic rays. Computational efficiency has been a bottleneck in numerical exploration of the large-scale evolution of IWI. Here I report a new hybrid particle-in-cell (PIC) method that can quickly simulate IWI. The method is based on a new model that describes the relation of the ion current and its magnetic field under the electron screening. The new method’s computational efficiency is nearly two orders of magnitude higher than that of the PIC method. This method is suitable for the full-scale simulation of the IWI in laser-plasma experiments and supernova remnants.

Abstract This work reports the preparation of Cu-Zn and Au/TiO2 catalysts on anodized aluminum monoliths (AAM). The structured catalysts were studied for the generation of H2 by methanol steam reforming (MSR) and its purification by preferential oxidation of CO (CO-PrOx). Initially, it was possible to generate a surface with whiskers and larger surface area by hydrothermal treatment of the AAM. Subsequently, the structured catalysts were synthesized by incipient wetness impregnation (IWI) and hydrothermal synthesis (HS). IWI synthesis allowed for the deposition of a larger amount of catalytic material than HS, with very good adhesion. The TiO2-IWI structured catalyst presented a homogeneous catalytic coating, with the presence of agglomerated particles. On the other hand, Cu-Zn-IWI showed good dispersion of the deposited particles with a homogeneous surface coating. EDX analysis corroborated the presence of Ti, Cu and Zn in all the catalytic surfaces. The incorporation of Au over TiO2-IWI structured catalysts was successfully performed by IWI using a colloidal solution of gold nanoparticles. MSR was studied over the developed metallic monoliths functionalized with Cu-Zn by the IWI method. The samples showed promising results in terms of activity, selectivity, and stability. Both diluted and concentrated methanol + water feeds were assayed. Complete methanol conversion was achieved for the diluted feed. Maximum methanol conversions of 55 % with 60 % H2 yield were measured when the concentrated feed was selected. Promising results were also achieved for the Au-based structured catalysts in the CO-PrOx in an H2-rich atmosphere. Although CO conversions of approximately 60 % were achieved, operating with higher catalyst loadings would be recommended to reach the high CO conversions required for PrOx catalysts.

Based on the spectral reflection characteristics analysis of the muddy coastline in Jiangsu, an improved spectral water index (IWI) combined with the Otsu algorithm is proposed to extract muddy coastlines from Landsat Operational Land Imager (OLI) images. The IWI-extracted coastline results are compared with those extracted by the modified normalized difference water index (MNDWI), normalized difference water index (NDWI), enhanced water index (EWI), revised normalized different water index (RNDWI) and automated water extraction index (AWEI). The results show that the IWI is not affected by tidal conditions or sand content in the water, can reduce the “salt-and-pepper” phenomenon in the Otsu algorithm classification, can accurately identify water boundaries and can extract silty mudflats and marine buildings with high accuracy. It can also significantly increase the degree of automation of coastline extraction. The IWI combined with the Otsu algorithm demonstrates high accuracy of over 84% in the extraction muddy coastline data with one-pixel tolerance, which is twice as accurate as other indices. The accuracy of extraction for all other types of coastlines is over 81%. Therefore, the IWI index combined with the Otsu algorithm is reliable for studies of sea–land processes and coastline evolutions.

A research partnership between Iwi (tribal group) Ngāti Pāhauwera and a university-based research centre specialising in Kaupapa Māori (by Māori, for Māori) research was formed in response to an invitation from Ngāti Pāhauwera. The initial partnership goal was to address health inequities experienced by Māori women and infants in Te Wairoa (the home place of the Iwi), a predominantly Māori, rural region in Aotearoa (New Zealand). The research developed by the partnership is an example of a culturally responsive research methodology. Key features include: being Iwi-initiated; community identification of strengths and assets; guidance by a community steering group; contribution to local Māori research capacity; and the development of a community-led augmented maternity care pathway that is now being delivered through primary care. These features have strengthened the engagement of the Iwi, researchers and community, and provided opportunities for transformative change.

Operating for the past 30 years, New Zealand’s 'iwi radio' stations broadcast a mixture of te reo Māori and English language programming throughout the country. The 21 stations that presently operate were established as a strategy to improve upon the severe decline in the indigenous language. As radio stations, each initiative also affords individual Māori groups some autonomy in the mediated protection and promotion of indigenous identity. Collectively represented by Te Whakaruruhau o Ngā Reo Irirangi Māori, the iwi stations stand apart from the highly-consolidated mainstream commercial and public service sectors, but are now similarly confronted with the challenge of a rapidly changing media landscape. Utilising convergence as a prominent, albeit contentious, descriptor of media transformation, this article analyses the response of the iwi radio sector to convergence processes. Initiatives that include the integration of web and social media and the establishment of a networked switching platform to share iwi content highlight parallel opportunities and challenges for the iwi radio stations as they strive to become ‘more than radio’ on limited resourcing. This discussion highlights the experiences of radio practitioners tasked with the preservation and progress of indigenous voices in an era of convergence, providing further contextual insight into contemporary accounts of media transformation, radio and Māori media.

This is a revised version of an assessment of the Islamic Well-Being Index (IWI) of Muslim majority countries, first published by this author in 2013 (IWI 1.0). It uses an improved, updated methodology and reflects the essential maqasid al-shari‘ah (Higher Objectives of Islamic Law) developed by Imam Abu Hamid al-Ghazali. The IWI provides practical insights for countries that aspire to move to a higher state. Leading countries in the maqasid fields could serve as role models for lagging counties. More specifically, IWI indicators provide a way to spot problems, set targets, track trends, and identify best practice policies. This 2021 assessment adds four more countries to the 27 ranked previously. The method incorporates insights from leading Islamic scholars who have developed a ‘maqasid index of governance’ for Muslim countries. The top three countries listed in the Index are (first to third): Indonesia, Tunisia and Malaysia. Indonesia, the world’s largest Muslim country with a successful democracy, experienced an Islamic resurgence, which is reflected in its citizens’ moderate values and practices. Leading countries within the maqasid fields are (first, second): Religion – Guinea-Bissau, Nigeria; Life – UAE, Brunei; Intellect - Albania, Kyrgyzstan; Family – Morocco, Tunisia; and Wealth – Malaysia, UAE. Countries showing greatest improvement in IWI rankings are Lebanon and Turkey. Those that significantly worsened are Afghanistan, Nigeria, Chad and Iraq. To expand the applicability of this index, governments in Muslim majority countries need to facilitate assessment. In particular, religiosity surveys should be expanded and periodic surveys are required to fill other data gaps. The IWI Index and its highlights should be prepared and published annually.

Abstract The idea of developing an Individual Welfare Index (IWI) emanated from the criticisms raised against using Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita to compare living standards of urban and rural areas. There is evidence that good measures of welfare have to encompass both objective and subjective indicators where little has been empirically known. The specific objective of this paper was to propose a framework for developing an IWI that combines both subjective and objective aspects in an attempt to provide a satisfactory measure of individual welfare. The data were collected from 40 respondents aged 18–60 years within the randomly selected 20 households (i.e., two respondents in a household) using a structured questionnaire. The results showed that, the framework of welfare components were reliable to develop the IWI (Cronbach-Alpha ≥ 0.7) and that the computed IWI were 55.9 and 51.0 in the regions with the highest (about 3,000,000 TZS) and lowest (about 1,000,000 TZS) GDP per capita, respectively. It is concluded that, a satisfactory measure of welfare when comparing welfare performances in urban and rural areas, should include both objective and subjective welfare measures.

This work highlights new insights into the performance of TiO2 doped with noble metal catalysts for the photocatalytic degradation of organic water pollutants. Different samples of titanium dioxide doped with noble metals (Au and Pd) were successfully synthesized via incipient wet impregnation (IWI) and ultrasound-assisted impregnation (US) methods. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and UV-Vis reflectance spectroscopy were used for the characterization of the obtained materials. Their photocatalytic efficiency was investigated in aqueous suspension thorough a series of laboratory tests performed under ultraviolet (UV-A) irradiation conditions using 2,4 dinitrophenol (2,4 DNP) as a target molecule. The results clearly show that the method used for the catalyst synthesis affects its photocatalytic activity. It was found that the samples prepared by the IWI method exhibited high photocatalytic activity, and the removal rate obtained with TiO2-Pd/IWI was higher than that found for TiO2-Au/IWI. Furthermore, for the best catalyst, some extra photocatalytic experiments were conducted with rhodamine 6G (R6G), a highly stable molecule with a very different chemical structure to 2,4 DNP, in order to check the reactivity of this material. Moreover, the recycling experiments carried out with TiO2-Pd/IWI clearly demonstrated the high photocatalytic stability of this material for the degradation of 2,4 DNP. All of the collected data confirmed the interesting photocatalytic potential of the selected catalyst in the elimination of organic pollutants with no obvious change in its reactivity after four reaction cycles, which is very promising for promoting future applications in water depollution.

Te Rūnanga o Te Rarawa, like other iwi organisations, strives for seamlessness and holism in its operations. Yet, much of its work is characterised by compartmentalisation of, for example, funding, service provision, service contracts, government agencies and policymaking. In 2006, compartmentalisation of research presented itself as a problem to the Rūnanga when four projects appeared on its workload, simultaneously separate and joined. What separated the projects was that each was funded from a different source, and therefore carried different contractual obligations and reporting requirements, let alone different sets of iwi expectations. What joined the projects were the broad goals of whānau and hapū development, preparation for a post-settlement iwi environment, and research: one project was entirely a research project, and the others either included a defined research component or stood to benefit from being informed by research. The challenge for Te Rarawa was, in effect, to reclaim the research, to repackage its goals for iwi purposes, and to reinstate the principles of seamlessness and holism to its design, and to do that while also meeting the disparate contractual obligations derived from either an academic or governmental ‘compartment’. The result was Ngā Tāhuhu o te Taiao, both a conceptual umbrella under which the projects could gather, drawn together by ideological lines of ancestry and tikanga implicit in the t_huhu, and a comprehensive, structured framework that wed the research to the Rūnanga's processes and programmes of work. This paper shares some of the research stories arising from Ngā Tāhuhu o Te Taiao, and reflects on how it negotiated the methodological quagmire invoked. It discusses the challenges of aligning the research with iwi goals, and broadening research to include, for instance, investment in developing community interviewers and researchers. It considers the strategies used to introduce a multi-layered, multi-purpose research project to people suffering from research fatigue or carrying the scars of past research harm. A work in progress, Ngā Tāhuhu has faced some weighty problems, including questions about the extent to which the conjoined research goals of iwi and the academy and the relevant funding agencies may, in fact, be treated as methodologically compatible: can one research project really rule them all? So far the project has carefully navigated the dynamic of blending academic approaches and research goals with the research goals and community development values of whānau and hapū. Among the tensions and obstacles, of what often feels like uncharted waters, is a confidence that in projects like Ngā Tāhuhu research excellence demands excellent outcomes for whānau and hapū development. Moreover, success and effectiveness of the research ought to be measured – in part at least – by its direct, practical contributions to iwi development, as set by iwi goals. It is a measure that makes innovation not only desirable, but necessary.

Weaning indices that are simple to derive and apply have been developed for predicting the likeliness of a patient to tolerate weaning. This study compared the Tobin Index and Integrative Weaning Index (IWI) to determine the better predictor for a successful weaning. This was a prospective observational study done on 60 patients on mechanical ventilation meeting the defined criteria whose physicians considered clinically stable to be given a weaning trial. Pre-determined threshold values of the Tobin index and IWI for determining a successful or unsuccessful weaning were used. A daily assessment was made with calculation of the Tobin index in GroupTI for extubation when Tobin Index≤105 breaths/min/L and IWI in GroupIWI when IWI>25 ml/min/cm H2O, with each group having 30 patients. A spontaneous breathing trial of 2 hours was given. The variables compared between the two groups were the outcome of weaning, duration of mechanical ventilation, ICU stay and hospital stay in days, and mortality. Comparison was done using Chi square test / Fisher’s exact test and Mann Whitney test. There was no significant comparison in terms of weaning success or failure, durations of mechanical ventilation, hospital stay and mortality. The duration of ICU stay was less and of statistical significance in the IWI group. However, the percentage of successful weanings while using the indices, both considered separately, was higher than the failures. Both the predictive indices studied did not successfully predict weaning outcomes in all the cases thus limiting their use in clinical practice. Key words: successful weaning, mechanical ventilation, weaning predictors, Tobin index, integrated weaning index

The Children, Young Persons and Their Families Act (1989) heralded family group conferences as an innovative mechanism to reinforce the role of family in child welfare decision-making. While many have regarded family group conferences as a culturally appropriate response, continued managerialism reflected a guise of cultural responsiveness and family involvement that has actively disempowered whānau and the young person in decision-making processes. Similar to concerns that led to the formation of the 1989 Act, institutional racism inspired Rangitāne o Wairarapa (Rangitāne) to reclaim the family group conference process, and child welfare decision-making, as an iwi function. The current study reports on the development of a family group conference practice model of one iwi (Rangitāne) as a case study of cultural reclamation. The success of the approach is juxtaposed against the iwi practice model, critical success factors and opportunities for the development of such practice models across Aotearoa New Zealand.

OBJECTIVE: Evaluation of head-position dependency during the ice-water test is essential when the test is indicated. Because ice-water irrigation (IWI) in the prone position is frequently skipped in many laboratories, we investigated the importance of evaluating position dependency in an ice-water test. DESIGN AND SETTING: Twenty-five unilateral peripheral vestibulopathy patients showing no nystagmus during warm irrigation were included. IWI was performed in supine and prone positions, and maximum slow-phase velocity and direction of nystagmus were assessed by using video nystagmography. RESULTS: Eleven cases showed head-position dependency and were interpreted as hypofunctional. Fourteen cases showed no dependency, suggesting the absence of end organ function. In the latter group, 6 patients showing definite nystagmus in supine position could have been misinterpreted as hypofunctional, had it not been for prone-position results. CONCLUSIONS: Evaluation of head position dependency by using IWI is important in the determination of lateral semicircular canal function.

Abstract Internal waverider inlets (IWIs) are novel three-dimensional (3D) high-performance inward turning inlets. However, they possess poor self-starting capacity when applied in a fixed-geometry inlet for ramjets. Firstly, this paper presents an analysis of self-starting capacity for IWIs to demonstrate that IWIs face more difficult challenges when used as ramjet inlets than they do as scramjet inlets. Self-starting capacity must be taken into account when designing ramjet inlets. Secondly, the impact of a fluidic control method on a fixed-geometry IWI was studied by numerical simulation of fluid flow. The numerical results show that the fluidic control mechanism improved the self-starting capacity of the IWI at low Mach numbers: the minimum Mach number of self-starting capacity was reduced from M3.8 to M3.2; furthermore, the compression ratio was increased from 29.9 with no fluidic control to 31.9. By analyzing two different groups of fluidic control positions, it was determined that bleeding before the separation bubble has no impact on the IWI self-starting capacity.

ABSTRACTBackground: This is the first study to analyze the psychometric properties of the International Wellbeing Index (IWI), which comprises the Personal Wellbeing Index (PWI) and National Wellbeing Index (NWI), among community-dwelling older adults. Methods: The IWI was applied to 1106 community-dwelling adults aged 60 years and over. The sample was additionally assessed using scales for comorbidity, disability, mood, general orientation to life, social support, health-related quality of life, and two questions assessing satisfaction with life as a whole and with life in Spain. The PWI and NWI were separately analyzed for acceptability, internal consistency, convergent and discriminative validity, and precision. Linear regression analyses of the PWI and the NWI were also conducted. Results: Mean scores were 71.0 ± 13.5 for the PWI and 49.5 ± 14.4 for the NWI. No floor or ceiling effects were detected. Cronbach's α was 0.88 for the PWI and 0.92 for the NWI. Factor analysis identified two factors in the IWI, and one factor in the PWI and NWI respectively. The PWI showed a correlation of 0.50 with the “satisfaction with life as a whole” item, and the NWI showed a correlation of 0.73 with the “satisfaction with life in Spain” item. There were significant differences in scores: in the PWI, according to gender, age, social support, education and depression; and in the NWI, according to education and depression. The regression model identified psychosocial, health and functional factors as determinants of the PWI (explained variance: 46.8%).Conclusions: The IWI displays good acceptability and is a consistent, valid and precise measure of global quality of life in older adults.

Purpose This paper aims to examine indigenous governance and economies of iwi Maori (Maori tribes) in Aotearoa New Zealand. Research into persisting inequities amongst iwi that have settled treaty claims and the potential for intervention through new governance models and indigenous entrepreneurship contextualise the paper. Design/methodology/approach Kaupapa Maori (Maori philosophy) is used as an indigenous methodology to facilitate and empower transformative change, underpinned by Maori knowledge, language and culture. A multi-level approach is used to collect data from international, national and local tribal organisations. Validity is established through stakeholder engagement. Findings A central challenge in the post-treaty settlement context is exponentialising tribal capabilities because of the multiple purposes ascribed to post-settled iwi. Four themes, characterised as “unfolding tensions”, offer a critique and basis for solving tribal development challenges: how do tribes create culturally grounded global citizens; how do tribes rebalance wealth creation and wealth distribution; how do tribes recalibrate tribal institutions; and how do tribes embed entrepreneurship and innovation within their economies? Research limitations/implications As data collection is still underway, the paper is conceptual. Practical implications Five strategies to address unfolding tensions are identified for tribes to consider. Social implications Tribal governors and tribal members are implicated in the analysis, as well as the architects of post-treaty settlement governance models. Originality/value The paper contributes to theorising about tribal governance, economies and entrepreneurship.

The term cultural supervision has been coined as part of a strategy that implicates supervision in the support and development of culturally appropriate therapeutic practice. In Aotearoa New Zealand particular focus has been given to supervision where the client is Māori and the practitioner is a member of the dominant Pākehā culture particularly, or of other non-Māori cultures. However, while the phrase cultural supervision has entered common professional parlance, the practice has had little research attention in counselling/psychotherapy in New Zealand. Cultural supervision appears to encompass a range of understandings, and there is no clear agreement about practice implications. It is unclear what alignment there is between aspirations, regulations, and practice. This article reports on an exploratory qualitative study that investigated how supervision might work in supporting culturally appropriate counselling practice in Aotearoa New Zealand. The study’s findings are presented as a multi-voiced dialogue. This arts-based representational practice enacts the uncertainties of post-colonial experience. Its intention is to make assumptions, ideas, and practices available for discussion. Its contribution is to join current dialogue about supervision and culture, and to raise further questions about how supervision and culturally appropriate practice come together. Worldwide, Indigenous peoples are building an emerging area of law which can be described as Indigenous jurisprudence. Indigenous jurisprudence is firmly grounded in a legal philosophy that conveys an Indigenous consciousness of all life existing as expressions of sacred life energy. All life, including people, are also children and grandchildren of Grandfather Universe and Grandmother Earth. All life are therefore close and revered kin who coexist interdependently. This article describes the Indigenous law that underpins the Te Awa Tupua Agreement. For Whanganui Iwi, the agreement is a first step towards decolonising New Zealand and its nation state. Decolonisation will be achieved when the natural world determines New Zealand's constitutional framework, and New Zealand's nation state and our Whanganui Iwi nationhood—and our respective legal and governance systems—coexist interdependently.

Streszczenie:
The activity and selectivity of Mo/ZSM-5, benchmarking catalyst for the non-oxidative dehydroaromatization of methane, strongly depend on the cluster size, spatial distribution, and chemical environment of the Mo-based active sites. This study discloses the use of an ultrasound-assisted ion-exchange (US-IE) technique as an alternative Mo/ZSM-5 synthesis procedure in order to promote metal dispersion along the zeolite framework. For this purpose, a plate transducer (91.8 kHz) is employed to transmit the ultrasonic irradiation (US) into the ion-exchange reactor. The physico-chemical properties and catalytic activity of samples prepared under the said irradiation procedure and traditional impregnation (IWI) method are critically evaluated. Characterization results suggest that US neither affects the crystalline structure nor the particle size of the parent zeolite. However, US-IE promotes molybdenum species dispersion, avoids clustering at the external fresh zeolite surface and enhances molybdate species anchoring to the zeolite framework with respect to IWI. Despite the improved metal dispersion, the catalytic activity between catalysts synthesized by US-IE and IWI is comparable. This suggests that the sole initial dispersion enhancement does not suffice to boost the catalyst productivity and further actions such ZSM-5 support and catalyst pre-conditioning are required. Nevertheless, the successful implementation of US-IE and the resulting metal dispersion enhancement pave the way toward the application of this technique to the synthesis of other dispersed catalysts and materials of interest.

This article proposes that rather than being inherently dangerous, religions originate in times when people experience inter-tribal wars or other existential anxieties, and evolve in tandem with societal developments; as people become more peaceful, so do their religions. Based on Volkan’s (1985, 2006) analysis of psychological aspects of the conflict after 9/11 between America and some Muslims, it is suggested that religion serves as an ethnic and national identifier rather than being the source of the conflict. Jung’s idea that “gods” correspond to unconscious psychic factors rather than existing as entities is cited. New Zealand journalism graduates need to be taught different media systems and news values. In the New Zealand news media now and beyond 2000 the biggest growth area is in the Māori media. For many years Māori have been saying the news media ignores their perspective on news and is not reporting Māori events properly. The news media failed to take notice of these claims and in frustration Maori set up their own media. In the last 19 years—but more so in the past five years there has been a huge growth in the Māori news media. There are now nine Iwi newspapers, 26 Iwi radio stations, a Māori radio news network and several Māori magazines, the most prominent being Mana.

Discussing the process from death to display for two significant Rāpoka, leopard seals, (Hydrurga leptonyx) undertaken as preservation projects by the Otago Museum. The first of these is a large female which died within the takiwa (district) of Kāti Huirapa Rūnaka ki Puketeraki in 2008. This seal was significant in the sense that it was the first marine mammal preservation project undertaken by the museum in collaboration with local iwi in the following the Ngāi Tahu Treaty of Waitangi settlement, where iwi regained the management rights of kā kararehe o takaroa (marine mammals) remains within the Marine Mammal Protection Act framework. This preservation project became a successful model for collaboration between iwi, government wildlife organisations, researchers and the museums when a marine mammal dies in the Otago Region. In 2017 the death of a neonate leopard seal pup, significant given its birth on St Kilda Beach, Dunedin within the takiwa of Te Rūnanga o Ōtākou sees the Otago Museum working to preserve this important leopard seal. This talk discusses the parallels and differences between the two projects, the importance of collaboration, recent applications of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Computed Tomography (CT) scanning preservation methods as well as using more traditional methods of taxidermy and skeltonisation. The guiding principles have been to preserve voucher information for the future, educate visitors about this Antarctic species, to expose our local community to the ongoing links between Māori and the natural world, and to demonstrate how wildlife management, science, museums and practitioners in indigenous knowledge can successfully collaborate in the practical and interpretive context of curation.
