The foundation of architectural acoustics as an independent science is generally referred to Sabine’s early studies and their application. Nevertheless, since the 16th Century, a great number of authors wrote essays and treatises on the design of acoustic spaces, with a growing attention to the newborn typology of the Opera house, whose evolution is strongly connected to the cultural background of the Italian peninsula. With roots in the Renaissance rediscovery of Vitruvius’s treatise and his acoustic theory, 16th- to 19th-Century Italian authors tackled several issues concerning the construction of theatres—among them, architectural and structural features, the choice of the materials, the social meanings of performances. Thanks to this literature, the consolidation of this body of knowledge led to a standardisation of the forms of the Italian Opera house throughout the 19th Century. Therefore, the scope of this review paper is to focus on the treatises, essays and publications regarding theatre design, written by pre-Sabinian Italian scholars. The analysis of such literature aims at highlighting the consistencies in some 19th-Century minor Italian Opera houses, in order to understand to what extent this scientific and experimental background was part of the building tradition during the golden age of the Italian Opera.

The article deals with the problem of creativity and scientific heritage of Niccolò Machiavelli in the system of historiographic assessments by Francesco De Sanctis (1817-1883). The author states the importance of addressing this issue in the era of globalization, since the era of the Italian Renaissance reflected cardinal changes in the interpretation of the historical process. In addition, in the era of globalization, the question of the system for forming the stages of historiographic assessments of Machiavelli's scientific heritage has significant methodological potential. Of particular interest in this regard is the Italian historiography of the 19th century, which developed under the influence of the emergence of a single centralized Italian state. What the Italians failed in the 16th century, what Machiavelli dreamed about in the final chapter of The Prince, became a historical fact in 1861. Of course, before the Italian historiography, a natural question arose about the creation of a holistic picture of Italian social and political life, within which the name of Machiavelli was to occupy a significant place. Thus, after Italy gained its statehood in the 19th century, representatives of Italian historiography faced the task of determining the true place of the entire scientific heritage of Machiavelli within the framework of Italian historical development. This task was brilliantly solved in the framework of the «History of Italian Literature» by Francesco De Sanctis (1817-1883).Consideration of the problems of creativity and scientific heritage of Machiavelli in the system of historiographic assessments by Francesco De Sanctis allows us to state the deep theoretical and methodological significance of these assessments. In de Sanctis' assessments of Machiavelli's heritage, not only a dry academic approach prevails, but also the desire to tie these assessments to De Sanctis' contemporary Italian political life of the 19th century. The scientific heritage and work of Machiavelli is considered by Francesco De Sanctis as a kind of lesson for the present. Machiavelli, who relies on realism and yet pays tribute to Fortune, is regarded as precisely a modern author. The assessments of the outstanding Italian scholar expressed in the second volume of the «History of Italian Literature» laid the foundation for a significant part of the modern interpretation of Machiavelli. In the era of globalization, the appeal to the key aspects of the formation of assessments of creativity and scientific heritage of Machiavelli within the framework of Italian historiography of the 19th century is of considerable interest. Thus, the views of Machiavelli were formed in a complex and rich atmosphere of the decline of the political influence of Italy, which became a fact after the military events of 1494. This allows us, in turn, referring to the heritage of the Florentine thinker, to see the content of his concepts in the light of the challenges of the era of globalization and the formation of a new world order.

A statistical analysis based on the thorough survey of Parisian sales catalogues between 1730 and 1799 enables one to distinguish a different truth, the presence of a particular taste for Settecento Italian paintings and reveals the importance of landscape and the Venetian school in these sales, to the detriment of more conventional schools and artists.

The article, based on the Italian literature of the 18th–19th centuries, traces the relationship between the social status of the writer, his attitude to his work, on the one side, and the forms of remuneration for it, on the other. In contrast to the sociological approach, which considers the problem of “writer and money” mainly from the position of the reader, the author of the article, being a historian of literature, considers it from the position of the writer. The author shows that the attitude to literature as a way of earning money is a result of ideological shifts and changes in the writer’s social status. The development path of Italian writer in the period of 14th–19th centuries can be marked as follows: a scientist with knowledge inaccessible to the majority, mentor and defender of the truth at the beginning of the period and an artist expressing the moods and feelings of the majority, the ruler of the crowd and the hero of mass culture at its end. The evolution is vividly reflected in the transfer of semantic accents in the meaning of the word letterato and in the shift of words poets used to call themselves: letterato-poeta-scrittore-artista. The modifications also affected the organization of writer’s work: the solitude in silence, praised by Petrarch, in the romantic era was replaced by the demand for social activity, which during the 19th century takes more and more pronounced bourgeois forms. In Italy of the 18th century, they were stimulated by theater, in the 19th century by journalism.

The paper analyses how cooperative learning can be used in teaching literature, specifically 19th century Italian literature. It presents the results of group activities carried out in October 2022 by students from the Faculty of Letters of the “Babes-Bolyai” University of Cluj-Napoca, with specialisation in Italian A and B. These are students attending the Italian Literature II course, taught in Italian. The participants returned to university (face-to-face didactic activities) only in the spring of 2022, in the second semester of their first year of study at a university level. They spent more than one year of high school during the Covid-19 pandemic (with online school). After having carried out a cooperative activity in the practical course that focused on the study of Italian literature, in groups of 3-4 students, they were given an anonymous questionnaire to express their views on cooperative learning of foreign languages and literatures. The questionnaire contained 7 questions in which the teacher wanted to check whether the students found cooperative learning more effective than the classical methods of learning foreign languages and literatures in the post-pandemic period and how the cooperative activity stimulated their curiosity for Italian literature, especially for reading the novel studied during the practical course.

- Language is one of the most widely discussed questions in Italian social and literary history, and Italian has recently been dropped from the list of official languages in the European Community. The author presents a historical overview starting from the 13th century, which saw the beginning of popular literature in poetry, and comprising the development of written and spoken Italian from traditional regional literature to the evolution of the dolce stilnovo, the appearance in the 19th century of the language of Manzoni and his antagonists, the composition of the first Dictionary of the Italian language and the practice of transferring teachers and national service conscripts from one part of the country to another so as to spread a standard language over the whole territory. The article concludes with the observation that language changes over time and that its current written and spoken form is the result of standardisation produced by the population's exposure to the mass media.

This article brings to light the socio-political conditions in the Triestine region, at the end of the 19th century and in the fi rst half of the 20th century. Th ese conditions infl uenced the formation of stereotypical, regionally coloured perceptions of Slovenes and Italians in the Slovene and Italian poetry about Trieste from the fi rst half of the 20th century, which were specific to the Triestine area or rather the wider region around Trieste, where the Slovene and Italian communities cohabited. This article also points out that these stereotypes are constructs. The Italian Triestine literature most frequently depicted the Italians (native culture) before the First World War, in accordance to the needs of the non-literary irredentist disposition. In this light, it depicted them as the inheritors of the Roman culture, wherein it highlights their combativeness and burning desire to “free” Trieste from its Austro-Hungarian prison. An increase in auto-stereotypes among the Slovene poetry is noticeable after the First World War and is most likely a consequence of the socio-political changes in Trieste. The Slovene Triestine literature depicted the Slovenes (native culture) after the First World War as “slaves” and simultaneously as the determined defenders of their land, who are also fully aware of their powerlessness against the immoral aggressor and cruel master (Italian hetero-stereotype) and so often call upon the help of imaginary forces (mythical heroes and personified nature in the Trieste region) and God. The Italian Triestine literature mostly depicted the Slovenes before the First World War as an inferior people, often referred to by the word “ščavi”. After the First World War, the Slovenes are depicted merely as the residents of the former Austro-Hungarian Trieste, meaning they were part of the narrative surrounding Trieste, only in when the narrative was set before the First World War. In this case, pre-war Slovene stereotypes appear, also depicted as part of the literary myth of the “Habsburg” Trieste, namely as the folkloric characters from the surrounding countryside.

Considered an integral part of Metropolitan France, the island of Corsica is situated nonetheless on the very periphery of the modern state that claims it. Actually situated geographically closer to Italy than to any part of France, its culture and its people are likewise more closely related to their Italians neighbors than to the rest of what Corsicans term "Continental France." Following the acquisition of Corsica, both government officials and bourgeois travelers would seek to visit the island, often recording their findings and publishing these memoirs for others to know of their travels. This concept of travel memoirs, specifically those regarding Corsica, had already been a fairly common practice among the British, as they had often placed interest in the island itself. From this group of French and British travel memoirs would come the writings of James Boswell, P. P. Pompéi, and the Baron de Beaumont, among others. Corsica becomes a place of unique setting for novels and short stories throughout the century, with tales of banditry, vendetta, and violence from the island. For those authors seeking to place their stories in Corsica, inspiration was drawn from the very travel memoirs they had read regarding the island, although often they chose to ignore them in favor of stereotypes. I have chosen three specific 19th century authors in relation to the images created by the travel memoirs of Corsica: Prosper Mérimée, Honoré de Balzac, and Guy de Maupassant. The purpose behind each author's use of the images of Corsica was very different and shows different ways that these images were used. Mérimée directly used Corsica to question the triumph of the civilized over the uncivilized, Balzac used Corsica to represent France itself, and Maupassant used Corsica to show that "reality" is really nothing more than a personal illusion. Though when publishing their travel memoirs the authors might not have expected much to come of them, they have actually influence an entire century of writers, and possibly an entire nation, with their images of Corsica.

As women's literature emerged in late nineteenth-century Italy, female authors encountered many obstacles. Foremost among them was the near-total absence of Italian female literary role models. Female writers often expressed ambivalence towards the writing of other women, which was considered inferior to male writing. However, their reverence for male writers revealed how conflictive their identities as writers were, and it was an impediment to the establishment of a serious women's literary tradition. In addition to such personal conflicts, these writers also faced the challenge of gaining acceptance by the male-dominated literary community and by their readers. These two groups expected that women's writing conform to a moral code which did not apply to men's writing. This thesis is an analysis of the specific problems that female novelist Bruno Sperani and others faced as they strove to establish themselves in Italian literature.

The modern conception of organized, codified sport originated in Europe during the 19th century. At this time, instructors began to institute the practice of certain physical activities at school as a means of teaching morals, forming character, and initiating social exchange. Sport is particularly appropriate for forming men because of its public, physical nature. The values it instills—courage, strength, leadership—are also decidedly masculine. What, then, is made of the female athlete? Are the noble qualities that sports affirm inapplicable to women? In this thesis, I argue that female participation in sports often leads to masculinization, unless the sport is transformed into a type of “art” or otherwise feminized by focusing on its ability to enhance feminine roles (e.g. mother). This aestheticization/feminization renders female participation acceptable and allows women to receive their own “formation,” increase their aristocratic elegance, and participate in important social exchange. Sometimes these results come at a cost, such as marginalization or sexualization, but there are far fewer examples of such in the works of female authors. Society generally renounced physicality during the 17th and 18th centuries, and “sport” was an exclusively noble activity, so I will look predominantly at works from the 19th century—the period in which sport became codified, and consequently, “masculinized.” Because the 19th century is often considered a “Renaissance of the Renaissance,” I will also reference the 16th century to set the stage.

This thesis explores the notion of opposition in the Sonetti romaneschi by the Roman poet Giuseppe Gioachino Belli (1791-1863). It sees the poet as a warring rebel on the literary scene and examines his poetics and rhetoric of war through his choice of form (the hallowed sonnet structure), language (the ‘rotten’ vernacular) and subject (the downtrodden, previously voiceless underclass); it shows that these cornerstones of Belli’s opus are in polemical response to literary stimuli and intimately connected to the political, religious and sociological upheavals in and beyond Rome in the troubled run-up to Unification. Chapter one, entitled ‘Breaking the mould’, draws on Belli’s explicit declaration of war on his literary predecessors, and considers the influence of the Milanese writer Carlo Porta, arguing that Belli is more inimical than amicable, and not the simple imitator as thought to date. Chapter two, ‘A passage of arms: possessing the dialogue sonnet’, maintains that the fulcrum of Belli’s antagonistic poetics and his realist enterprise lies in his unprecedented use of the dialogue sonnet form and the staging of direct debate. Chapter three, entitled ‘The Battle of the Sexes’, treats opposition at a thematic level, applying gender studies and related theory to Belli for the first time. Chapter four, ‘War and peace: the silent revolution’, examines Belli’s creation of a totally new literary language, fulfilling the criteria for what Deleuze and Guattari, within broadly Marxist parameters, would identify as a ‘minor literature’ in the work of Kafka, in which a major language is somehow wrested from its anchors of power, or ‘deterritorialized’, to subvert the literary world from within. The thesis shows that Belli is more revolutionary than previously thought as a literary innovator, and an understudied giant of modern European literature as opposed to the marginal figure the historiography is wont to maintain.

The present work examines the literary criticism expressed by Isabella Teotochi Albrizzi in several of her unpublished letters.
The first part outlines the cultural and historical tradition of Venice during the Eighteenth Century. Particular attention is subsequently given to the intellectual role of women, their contribution to the literary salons of the time, and the neoclassical tradition. This first part is essential in that it supplies a valuable context to Isabella Teotochi Albrizzi's writings.
In the second part, I examine Isabella Teotochi Albrizzi's literary criticism of major European authors and works. Through these criticisms she exposes her misvision of the literary world to which she aspired, and reveals that although she was influenced by the subtle preromantic tendencies, she remained faithful to the neoclassical school.

This project outlines the discovery and digitization of previously unpublished correspondence composed by late 19th century author and literary critic, Marcel Schwob. Inspired by the inquiry of Bibliothèque Nationale Librarian Bernard Gauthier, Professor Daryl Lee alerted me to the presence of Marcel Schwob materials at BYU. I found that former BYU Professor John Green established a Marcel Schwob Memorial Collection and successfully published two books using the materials he gathered: Chroniques and Correspondance Inédite. After thoroughly researching the catalogued Schwob materials at BYU and comparing the contents to other Schwob publications, I found 72 previously unpublished letters. The majority of the letters (62) were written by Schwob to family members, and the remaining 9 letters were written to Schwob by colleagues. International interest in Marcel Schwob materials is one of many indicators representing renewed interest in the author, his work, and his influence. Recent publications also reflect growing Schwob interest. In Marcel Schwob, d'hier et d'aujourd'hui (2002), Christian Berg and Yves Vadé shed new light on Schwob through the observations of his contemporaries and modern-day essays on the importance of his contes. In addition, Jean Lorrain: Lettres à Marcel Schwob (2006) furthers the effort to better understand Schwob through a collection of correspondence. In light of this renewed interest, I determined that the previously unpublished correspondence would serve as a useful research tool for Schwob scholars. With the guidance and assistance of employees at the Harold B. Lee Library, I subsequently converted the correspondence into a digital publication. Creating a digital publication is a multifaceted undertaking requiring the involvement and expertise of different individuals and library departments. I successfully learned how to use both the hardware and software involved in the digitization process, thereby facilitating my completion of project deliverables, including: scanning and transcribing the letters; writing letter summaries (in both French and English), extracting names, and completing other metadata; uploading metadata using the Lee Library's external database; establishing authority control records; writing website content (in both French and English), and publicizing the project. This document contains the major deliverables found in the digital publication, specifically the website content, the letter transcriptions, and the metadata.

La recherche vise à comprendre les dynamiques de diffusion de la littérature de Salvatore Farina à l’étranger et plus particulièrement en France. L’écrivain, né à Sorso en 1846 et décédé à Milan en 1918, est un des écrivains italiens le plus prolifique du XIXème siècle, ayant publié en quarante ans de carrière plus d’un roman par an, parmi lesquels certains ont été traduits en 11 langues. Dans la première partie de la recherche nous mettrons en lien les thèmes clés de son activité narrative en Italie avec ses œuvres principales qui le rendront célèbre à l’étranger comme « l’humoriste italien », « le Dickens italien » ou l’écrivain italien du roman intime, en terminant avec le « Giubileo letterario » consacré à l’auteur en 1907 et avec une large réflexion sur les caractéristiques culturelles italiennes que Salvatore Farina a transmises dans ses œuvres. Dans la deuxième partie nous chercherons dans le rapport avec De Gubernatis (intellectuel, journaliste, essayiste italien) les modalités de la diffusion de sa littérature à l’étranger, par la suite nous décrirons ses voyages en soulignant les rapports de Farina avec les intellectuels, les journalistes et les éditeurs européens les plus importants. This research is aimed at discovering the dynamics of diffusion of Salvatore Farina’s literature abroad and particularly in France. The writer, born in Sorso in 1846 and deceased in Milan in 1918 is one of the most prolific Italian writers of the XIX Th century. He published more than a novel a year, among which some were translated into 11 languages. In the first part of the research we will link the key themes of his literature in Italy with his greatest works, those who made him famous and considered as “the Italian humorist”, “the Italian Dickens”, or the Italian writer of the “intimate novel”. We will conclude with the « Giubileo letterario » dedicated to the author in 1907 and with a broad reflection on the Italian culture characteristic that Salvatore Farina conveyed in his works. In the second part, we will study his relation with De Gubernatis (italian intellectual, journalist and essayist) and the characteristics of the diffusion of his literature abroad, we will describe the activity of Farina in the Europe, focusing on his travels and underlining Farina’s relations with the most important foreign intellectuals, journalists and editors. In the third part we will concentrate more specifically on his success in France and also dealing with the problematic of copyrights and the debate born in France within the “« société des gens des lettres », his trips to Paris, his relations with the French publishing world, the literary journals, his translators and finally with his potential correspondences with the great French literature figures of his time. This research is aimed at discovering the dynamics of diffusion of Salvatore Farina’s literature abroad and particularly in France between 19th and 20th century. We will analyse his masterpieces, his journalistic activities in Italy and abroad, his international contacts and his travels abroad. The research will be concluded with the study of his relationship with French editors, journalists and with the most important intellectuals of his time

Le travail s'insère dans la vaste perspective des études sur les rapports entre la culture italienne et la culture française dans la seconde moitié du XIX siècle. En particulier nous avons pris en examen la période 1870-1883, c'est-à-dire les années de la conclusion de la guerre franco-prussienne, jusqu'à la crise diplomatique de Tunis (1881) et au passage de l'Italie à l'alliance politique et militaire avec l'Autriche et l'Allemagne. (1886). Dans la vaste production littéraire de De Amicis (connu presque seulement pour la publication de son roman Cuore), la France joue un rôle non secondaire, comme le témoignent le volume Ricordi di Parigi (1879) et le recueil Ritratti letterari (1881). Le but de notre recherche a été d'abord l'analyse approfondie de ces deux livres. Ensuite nous avons fait une enquête systématique sur l'ensemble de la production de De Amicis - en examinant pour la première fois plusieurs périodiques littéraires et politiques - où nous avons retrouvé beaucoup d'autres témoignages importants. En outre, grâce à l'étude de la biographie de De Amicis, nous avons reconstruit ses voyages et ses séjours en France (1873, 1878, 1880), et nous avons retrouvé le nom d'autres intellectuels français, avec lesquels De Amicis a établi des liens d'amitié et de collaboration. Enfin, à travers l'analyse de la correspondance privée de certains protagonistes de cet échange, nous avons acquis d'autres données. Nous avons ainsi mis à jour de nombreux témoignages de la remarquable réception en France des œuvres de De Amicis. Il a été beaucoup traduit en France et la critique française l'a considéré dès sa première œuvre (La vita militare, 1868) comme un des écrivains les plus importants d'Europe. Le bilan final de nos recherches confère à De Amicis un rôle très important dans les rapports entre la France et l'Italie, aussi bien au niveau culturel que politique

This study examines the current reception of second part of the 19th century Italian literature in France. The data come from 4 sources of information: the general book market on foreign literature, the scholarly book market on Italian literature, the programs of Literature in Bachelor and Master curricula of Italian Studies, and the yearly programs of the competitive exam for teachers in Italian (Agrégation). As a result, the champion of second 19th century Italian literature’s reception in French culture is Giovanni Verga, the traditional canon is mostly undiscussed but lately, both large audience publishing and academic studies show interest for relatively forgotten authors such as Grazia Deledda and movements such as Scapigliatura.

According to 19th-century philologist Jernej Kopitar, elite literary traditions and modern written languages originated in folk literature. Leading Slovenian intellectuals of his day, however, including poet France Prešeren and linguist and critic Matija Čop, favored classic poetic forms reminiscent of the Italian Renaissance. In Slovenian literary history, Kopitar has remained a figure of secondary importance; nonetheless, his role in other South Slavic cultures was preeminent. We examine several attempts to revert this tendency and to ascribe to Kopitar, and not only to Čop, a leading role in Slovenian nation-building.

This contribution discusses the representation of rape and violence against women in late 19th century Italian literature. In doing so, I focus on a short story, La Vergine Orsola, initially written by Gabriele D’Annunzio in 1884 as part of a short story collection titled Il Libro delle Vergini, later re-published in 1902 in Le Novelle della Pescara. This contribution looks at how the idea of rape is used in this short story as a narrative escamotage to bring to the attention of the reader the question of female entitlement to sexual desire as part of a social critique that D’Annunzio brings forward in his fin-de-siècle novels and short stories.

Aspects of the reception of Russian culture and literature in Italy during the fascist period. Many studies are dedicated to the reception of Russian literature in Italy with a really extensive bibliography on specific aspects of the question. However, there is still no comprehensive monograph on the subject as a whole. Russian literature became popular in Italy at the end of the ‘80s of the 19th century after being almost completely ignored. A deepened comprehention and awareness of Russian literature was gained in the first decades of the 20th century, when exoticism was gradually supplanted by familiarity. The 20’s are the time when Russian literature and culture can be considered a modern classic for the average Italian. Fascism’s attitude to the Soviet experiment was by no means unequivocal, and Russian literature had a specific influence on intellectual life in Italy and served as a factor in its defense of intellectual freedom during the 20 years of fascist power. Almost all major Soviet writers are translated and published in Italy in the 20’s. The situation will radically change in the 30’s, when the censorship will take over and the confrontation will become unambiguous.

The background color of Russian literature and Russian painting art in the 19th century is gloomy and heavy, and there exists text intertextuality between them, which is different from single text and single painting. Literary words and painting invisible words quote, permeate, insinuate and rewrite each other. Literature is the writing of painting, and painting is the color of literature. The main line of literature development and the main line of painting development seem to be twisted together like a rope, presenting spiral development, closely linked, complementary and inseparable.The same value orientation and aesthetic purpose have intertextuality, mutual influence, mutual interaction and mutual transformation, no matter in creation method, theme, artistic style or creation background. Direct description or sharp pen, or by the protagonist of indirect irony, using realistic and critical realism creation method, revealing the tsarist autocracy savage, dissatisfaction with the reality in protest of rebellion, as well as being bullied and oppressed pain and struggle, at the same time reflects the immortality of the Russian national literature and art achievement.

Until the introduction of printing technology during the 19th century, Siamese literature was disseminated and passed on in manuscript form only. Unfavorable climatic conditions, various adverse historical events and a lack of institutions responsible for the preservation of literary manuscripts hamper modern-day scholarly efforts to reconstruct Siamese literary history. In order to broaden the evidential basis available to scholars of pre-modern Siamese literature, qualitative as well as quantitative data were drawn from inventory lists of two manuscript collections, which hitherto had been in the possession of Prince-Patriarch Phra Paramanuchit Chinorot (1790–1853) and Prince Rakronnaret (1791–1848). Despite these records’ limited number and scope, they offer valuable insights into the size and composition of two private libraries, access to ancient and contemporary literary texts, as well as into the tastes of a highly educated mid-19th-century elite readership.
