Abstract Halal certification introduces a new discursive and material basis for the regulation of Muslim consumption in a world of global trade and complex food technology. Through chemical tests and state of the art supply chain management the halal certification industry aims to replace the necessity of intra-Muslim trade for the practice of halal. This paper presents the approach of two competing halal certification organizations in South Africa in interaction with Muslim businesses. It argues that the aim of the halal certification industry to standardize, trace and trade in halal is limited by the communal practice of halal that emphasizes intra-Muslim trade and exchange. Halal certification is an incomplete recalibration of halal. Attention to Muslim business practices illuminates the limitation of audit cultures to the practice of halal, offering a view of the complexity of halal in practice.

This study included both guidance tools and learning cases that were used to explore the entry potential of newly graduated science and technology teachers (NQSTTs). Using a semi-experimental model, the study took 106 NQSTTs, an experimental group (N = 54) and a control group (N = 52), which were subjected to a three-month Professional Certification (PQE) test program. Instruments such as the Science Performance Test (SAT), the Technology Performance Test (TAT), the Integrated Science, Technology and Society Test (ISTST) and microlearning were used to measure the entry capacity of NQSTT. All exams contained versions of the best test and test and were presented to both groups at the start of the study and at the end of the study. Significant changes in the initial ability of the teacher were detected by repeated measurements on ANOVA tests performed for each test with a significance level of 0.05. The results showed that the teachers' initial entry capacity was relatively better than expected, probably due to the type of teacher they were prepared for. It is hoped that these findings will help to show interesting differences in the programs designed to prepare teachers for certification/ admission. The didactic effects on science and technology education are discussed.

Background and Objectives: Racial/ethnic score disparities on standardized tests are well documented. Such differences on the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) certification examination have not been previously reported. If such differences exist, it could be due to differences in knowledge at the beginning of residency or due to variations in the rate of knowledge acquisition during residency. Our objective was to examine the residents’ mean initial scores and score trajectories using the In-Training Examination (ITE) and certification examination. Methods: A total of 17,275 certification candidates from 2014 to 2019 were included in this study. Annual ITE scores and certification examination scores are reported on the same scale and serve as the outcome. We conducted multilevel longitudinal regression to determine initial knowledge and growth in knowledge acquisition during residency by race/ethnicity categories. Results: The mean postgraduate year 1 (PGY-1) ITE score was 393.3, with minority residents scoring 16.2 to 36.0 points lower compared to White residents. The mean increase per year in exam performance from PGY-1 ITE to the certification exam was 39.9 points (95% CI, 38.7, 41.1) with additional change among race/ethnicity categories per year of -3.2 to 1.9 points. Conclusions: This study found that there were initial score disparities across race/ethnicity groups in PGY-1, and these disparities continued at the same rate throughout residency training, suggesting equality in acquisition of knowledge during family medicine residency training but with a persistent gap throughout training.

Over the past decade, interpreter certification performance testing has gained momentum. Certification tests often involve high stakes, since they can play an important role in regulating access to professional practice and serve to provide a measure of professional competence for end users. The decision to award certification is based on inferences from candidates’ test scores about their knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as their interpreting performance in a given target domain. To justify the appropriateness of score-based inferences and actions, test developers need to provide evidence that the test is valid and reliable through a process of test validation. However, there is little evidence that test qualities are systematically evaluated in interpreter certification testing. In an attempt to address this problem, this paper proposes a theoretical argument-based validation framework for interpreter certification performance tests so as to guide testers in carrying out systematic validation research. Before presenting the framework, validity theory is reviewed, and an examination of the argument-based approach to validation is provided. A validity argument for interpreter tests is then proposed, with hypothesized validity evidence. Examples of evidence are drawn from relevant empirical work, where available. Gaps in the available evidence are highlighted and suggestions for research are made.

Purpose: Bloomberg Certification is valuable for business students to include on their resumes when searching for jobs. This research note examines the impact of temporality on Saginaw Valley State University (SVSU) students’ Bloomberg Certification performance during COVID.
Methodology: We use data from 2020 and 2021 SVSU students regarding performance on Bloomberg Certification tests. In order for a student to receive Bloomberg Certification, all four modules of the Core Concepts section of the test must be passed (Economic Indicators, Currencies, Fixed Income, and Equities). Controlling for gender, intrinsic motivation, and attempt, we compare 2020 and 2021 SVSU student performance on Bloomberg Certification exams.
Findings: The study finds evidence that 2021 students were more successful in attaining Bloomberg Certification than 2020 students. COVID vaccines were available on SVSU’s campus starting in January of 2021.
Unique Contribution to Theory, Policy and Practice: This research note provides evidence that SVSU finance students adjusted well to the COVID pandemic.

Several observers have argued that one reason for higher union density in Canada than in the United States is that union certification procedures are considerably less time-consuming in Canada. This study tests that claim through an analysis of data on employer unfair labor practices and the outcome of union certification applications in Ontario from 1982 through 1990. The author finds that employer unfair labor practices reduced union support in certification campaigns in Ontario, but their effect is far less significant than that found in studies of the certification process in the United States.

Two binder technician workshops were held in January 1998, one at the Connecticut Advanced Pavement Laboratory at the University of Connecticut and one at the Northeast Center of Excellence for Paving Technology at Pennsylvania State University. These workshops were followed by a second set in 1999. The overall objective was to improve the repeatability of the test methods used to grade Superpave® asphalt binders. During the workshops, participants demonstrated and discussed the techniques used in their own laboratories. A document, Manual of Practice for Testing Asphalt Binders in Accordance with the Superpave PG Grading System, was developed for use by asphalt binder technicians and as a training aid for a proposed binder technician certification program. The results of the discussions that were held during the workshops and the items that are presented in the manual of practice are summarized. The results were grouped into four main categories: ( a) handling, sampling, and sample preparation; ( b) temperature measurements; ( c) equipment calibration; and ( d) testing procedures. The items discussed here and in the manual of practice supplement and clarify the current AASHTO test methods. The test methods in themselves are not sufficient to ensure uniformity in testing practice from one laboratory to the other.

Introduction. The article presents the results of a study of foreign, national and interstate regulatory documents that regulate the requirements for the stability of technical means of fire automation and automation of fire protection systems to mechanical and climatic influences of the environmental factors. Purpose and objectives. The purpose of the study is a comparative analysis of foreign and domestic experience in the development of regulatory documents for certification testing of technical means of fire automatics, taking into account their possible operation in various conditions and manifestations of the external environment. The objective of the study is to determine the methods for testing the performance of technical means of fire automatics under various external influences as part of the creation of a test base for reference laboratories provided for by the federal project "Systemic measures for the development of international cooperation and exports". Methods. The study applied the methods of apperception, axiomatic and descriptive analysis of literary sources (standards) in the field of testing fire detection and alarm systems. Research results. On the basis of a comparative analysis of foreign, national and interstate standards, the experience of developing test methods for fire detection and alarm systems for various types of environmental factors. Conclusions. In a comparative comparison, the test methods used in foreign and domestic practice for fire detection and alarm systems differ from each other both in the intensity of the tests themselves and in the types of simulating external influences, including exposure time, which is longer in foreign methods than in national and interstate ones. So, during certification foreign tests, the product is subjected to the full scope of tests once after the product is put into mass production and appears on the market. In Russian practice, the product is tested once every five years in full. Keywords: fire automatics; certification tests; external impact; mechanical and climatic factors; reference laboratory.

This study explores Korean college students’ perceptions of the practicality of the Chomsky’s theory, focusing on generative grammar. Over 60 years the acknowledgement of the theory has been so firm in Korea that it has been the test range of the syntax section of the English Teacher Certification Examinations. This study investigates the students’ perceptions of the practical use of phrase structure(PS) rules and tree diagrams. There were 30 participants of the survey on their perceptions of tree diagram practice and its practicality. They also took two TOEIC L/C tests, one before tree diagram practice and the other after the practice. The results show that there is little difference between the two means of the TOEIC tests. In the survey results, the participants gave a positive reaction to the usefulness of tree diagram practice in the degrees of understanding the English structure and English sentences, and the utilization of chunking practice. These results indicate that the strong points of a theory strongly affect the participants’ perceptions of the practicality of the theory.

The world practice of creating and modernizing specimens of armament and military equipment envisages carrying out numerous tests, checks and evaluations of the current technical conditions throughout the life cycle.
The task of organizing and carrying out of tests, in particular mechanical, electrical and climatic, at the State Scientific Research Institute of Armament and Military Equipment Testing and Certification is entrusted to the scientific research laboratory that is a part of the scientific and technical complex of measurements of the Institute. Currently, the laboratory is not fully equipped with modern testing equipment. Therefore, the task of justification of the ways of development and providing the laboratory with test equipment for conducting mechanical, electrical and climatic tests of armament and military equipment specimens is urgent.
The purpose of the article is to determine the perspective ways of development of the laboratory-testing facilities of the State Scientific Research Institute of Armament and Military Equipment Testing and Certification taking into account the modern development of armament and military equipment specimens.
During the research general scientific methods of processing and systematization of information, in particular system analysis and synthesis of organizational and technical systems were applied.
The peculiarities of the organizing and conducting mechanical, electrical and climatic tests at the enterprises of the defense-industrial complex of Ukraine were analyzed.
It was established that the basis of testing, in addition to legislative acts and technological normative documents, is the availability of a modern laboratory testing base, since without the means of measurement and testing it is impossible to ascertain the stability, sustainability and durability of armament and military equipment specimens to the influence of external factors.
The proposals for the purchase of the test equipment for ensuring tests in the direction of mechanical, electrical and climatic tests of State Scientific Research Institute of Armament and Military Equipment Testing and Certification are given.

The Education and Training Institute and the Professional Certification Institute of the Indonesian Waqf Board have carried out training and competency certification in collaboration with Sultan Maulana Hasanuddin Benten State Islamic University with the scheme of implementing the receipt of waqf property. 52 students participated in the accession from the Islamic economics department. The analysis method used is direct observation and participation to determine the implementation of training and competency test assessment organized by the Lemdiklat and LSP of the Indonesian Waqf Board. The training will be held online on June 16-17, 2023. Training materials were provided by 3 resource persons with competency units for the scheme of implementing the receipt of waqf property as follows: (1) Managing Wakif Loyalty, (2) Carrying Out Waqf Property Receipt, (3) Managing Waqf Complaints. The speaker was Mr. Ahmad Zubaidi, MA who presented material with the title of unit (1) Marketing the waqf program, (2) Evaluating the receipt of waqf property, (3) Managing reputation risk. The implementation of the competency test assessment will be carried out offline on July 4, 2023, by presenting eleven assessors as examiners. The stages of the competency test are divided into three main parts, namely: (1) filling in 50 multiple-choice questions with a minimum passing grade of 66. (2) demonstration practice, and (3) direct observation through interviews. The results of the competency test on 52 accessions were declared all passed competent. The students also gave high satisfaction with the implementation of training and competency test certification. The competency certificate received by students will be used as a companion to the diploma when they have graduated from the Islamic economics department.

PurposeAs fire doors are passive fire protection parts, the doors have to be certified through standard fire tests. It is usual practice to perform the standard fire testing on the components which require the fire certification. However, some gas turbine enclosure doors are too large to test at the test facility and hence the fire resistance test is practically not possible. The purpose of this paper is to develop a reliable finite element model, validate the model using the specimen door test results and extend the method to actual gas turbine enclosure doors to support the fire certification.Design/methodology/approachFirst, the standard fire testing on enclosure door test specimen was carried out. Second, the finite element analysis model was built and tuned to match the standard fire test deflections, and finally, the same modelling technique was extended to model the actual gas turbine enclosure door to verify the results for fire certification process.FindingsGap analysis, a method of post processing is suggested for result analysis. It was found suitable to verify the gap openings which are required for A0 rated fire certification according to fire test procedure code and also to check the mechanical integrity of the enclosure door frame assembly.Originality/valueThe method presented in this work could be used as support information along with the test specimen results for A0 class fire rating certification of the doors according to International Maritime Organization Resolution MSC.307 (88) Annexure 1: Part 3.

The paper describes the current British Psychological Society (BPS) approach to the development of professional test user qualifications through the use of a competence-based approach to the certification of test users. The rationale is described and contrasted with previous mechanisms for controlling standards in test use. The overall strategy is to develop more competent test users and to provide better information for them about tests. The latter is being accomplished through the establishment of a Register of Test Users with its associated journal Selection and Development Review; and the publication by BPS Books of regular test reviews and updates. To date, a Certification process has been implemented relating to psychological test use in occupational assessment settings. This comprises qualifications at two levels: “Level A” (tests of ability and aptitude) and “Level B” (personality assessment). The design and implementation of this system has raised many problems - theoretical, practical, political, and commercial. The focus of the new approach represents a radical change from past practice. It emphasises the competence of test users - rather than the means by which competence is attained. Standards have been defined and mechanisms established for assessing competence and for verifying and monitoring the quality of the assessment process.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to shed light on the relationship between the adoption of Social Accountability 8000 (SA8000) – which is considered the most important ethical certification standard – and firm performance, building on agency and contingency theories. Design/methodology/approach The authors analyse secondary longitudinal balance sheet data of listed firms employing a rigorous event-study approach and compare SA8000-certified companies to different control groups based on three matching criteria, i.e., industry, size, and pre-certification performance. The authors then study the moderating effects of the cultural features, the country’s development level, and the labour intensity on the causal relationship through multiple regression methods. Findings The authors find that SA8000 certification positively affects labour productivity and sales performance but has no effect on profitability. Furthermore, the study supports that the relationship between SA8000 and profitability is moderated by two cultural features of the home country of the firms (i.e. power distance and uncertainty avoidance). Originality/value This is the first study, which empirically tests the effects of the ethical certification SA8000 on firm performance using a cross-country sample. In addition, the authors contribute to the wider debate on the effects of corporate social responsibility practices on firm performance.

In operational flood defense, it is common practice to use sandbag systems. However, their installation is time-consuming as well as material- and labor-intensive. Sandbag replacement systems (SBRSs) can be installed in significantly shorter time and with less effort. However, owing to the lack of confidence in their functionality, they are only used to a limited extent. Testing and certifying such innovative systems according to defined criteria is supportive in promoting their use in flood defense. In order to test SBRSs and as a first step toward systematic tests, the Institute for Hydraulic and Coastal Engineering of the Bremen University of Applied Sciences, Germany (IWA) has set up a test facility in which defined test series can be carried out with different SBRSs on an underlying surface of turf. The focus of the test series is on installation time, possible water head, system stability, and seepage rates when in use. A conventional sandbag dam was used as reference in order to compare the test results with the different SBRSs. Test series show that damming with SBRSs has a clear advantage over the use of sandbags in terms of the time it takes to put them in place and comparable values of seepage rates and water heads. In order to professionally promote the spread of SBRSs in operational flood protection, it is recommended to introduce the certification of SBRSs, since they are technical systems whose functional capability must be proven before their use in an emergency. Together with existing international certification schemes, the test series that were carried out deliver a basis for developing a specific testing scheme for SBRSs.

The present paper looks at the issue of standardization in L2 oral testing. Whereas external examiners are frequently used globally, some countries opt for test-takers’ own teachers as examiners instead. In the present study, Sweden is used as a case in point, with a focus on the mandatory, high-stakes, summative, ninth-grade national test in English (speaking part). The national test has the typical characteristics of standardized tests and its main objective is to contribute to equity in assessment and grading on a national level. However, using teachers as examiners raises problems for standardization. The aim of this study is to examine teachers’/examiners’ practices and views regarding four aspects of the speaking test – test-taker grouping, recording practices, the actual test occasion, and examiner participation in students’ test interactions – and to discuss findings in relation to issues concerning the normativity and practical feasibility of standardization, taking the perspectives of test-takers, teachers/examiners, and test constructors into account. In order to answer research questions linked to these four aspects of L2 oral testing, self-report survey data from a random sample of teachers ( N = 204) and teacher interviews ( N = 11) were collected and quantitative data were analyzed using inferential statistics. Survey findings revealed that despite thorough instructions, teacher practices and views vary greatly across all aspects, which was further confirmed by interview data. Three background variables – teacher certification, work experience, gender – were investigated to see whether they could provide explanations. Whereas certification and gender did not contribute significantly to explaining the findings, work experience bore some relevance, but effect sizes were generally small. The study concludes that using teachers as examiners is a well-functioning procedure in terms of assessment for learning, but raises doubts regarding assessment of learning and standardization; a solution for test authorities could be to frame the test as non-standardized.

This study aims to examine in depth the effectiveness of halal tracea-bility in Indonesia and identify the impact of self-declared halal certifi-cation on the performance of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the country. The research method used is qualitative, which is reinforced by statistical analysis through survey data from the Popu-lix application as well as a comprehensive literature review. Data anal-ysis was conducted through various techniques, including regression tests, correlation tests, chi-square tests, and content analysis. The re-search findings confirm that the effectiveness of the halal tracking sys-tem significantly contributes to improving the resilience and competi-tiveness of MSMEs. Moreover, self-declared halal certification has been proven to increase consumer confidence in halal products and their integrity. This research makes an important contribution by high-lighting the urgency of integrating efficient halal supply chain man-agement practices, including reliable tracking systems and credible cer-tification. The problem of increasing the cost of environmental testing of diesel locomotives is considered, associated with the beginning of the normalization of the average operational emission of particulate matter from the exhaust gases of a diesel engine - an indicator of PM. The requirements of regulatory documents on the procedure for determining the PM indicator in the course of environmental tests of diesel locomotives are analyzed. In order to increase the economic efficiency of environmental tests of diesel locomotives, it is proposed to use the method of accelerated measurement (MАМ) of the PM indicator, which is characterized by a maximum allowable sample filtration rate of 100 cm/s and a minimum allowable mass of particulate matter on filters of 0,25 during certification tests and 0,14 mg - during research trials of a diesel engine. Developed: a methodology for evaluating the economic efficiency of using MAM and a methodology for experimental testing of MAM during diesel engine tests. The economic efficiency of MAM is proved. Computational studies have shown that the use of this method allows to reduce the cost of certification testing of a locomotive by 9 ... 28%, research tests - by 43 ... 53%. With decreasing levels of particulate emissions from diesel locomotives, the efficiency of the use of MAM is growing. On the basis of the 4CHN12/14 diesel engine, the experimental development of the proposed method was carried out, which confirmed the practical suitability of the MAM for the implementation of ISO 8178-F and DSTU 32.001-94 test cycles. It has been established that a decrease in the mass of the sample to the minimum allowable value leads to some decrease in the accuracy of the measurements of the PM index. However, it has been experimentally proved that the error in the reproducibility of the measurement results of the PM indicator during the implementation of MIE does not exceed the permissible value of ± 8.5%, and, therefore, this method can be applied in practice.

Background and Objectives: Team-based care with health coaches has improved the quality and cost effectiveness of chronic disease management and prevention. Clinical health coaches partner with patients to identify health goals, create action plans, overcome barriers to change, reinforce physician recommendations, and coordinate care. It is important to train resident physicians to practice in team-based settings. To date, there have been no studies of resident family physician exposure to health coaches. Methods: We surveyed 465 residency directors through a larger omnibus survey sent out by CERA; the response rate was 53.7%. Directors were asked about resident exposure to health coaches, the types of patients seen by health coaches, and the training background of the health coaches. We used chi-square tests to examine the relationship among these variables and program characteristics including status as a patient-centered medical home. Results: Almost two-thirds of the programs reported at least some residents had exposure to health coaches. Residents who trained in continuity sites with a PCMH certification of level 3 were more likely to have any exposure to health coaches (P<.05). There were multiple significant relationships between populations of patients seen and the training background of health coaches. Conclusions: To improve quality, reduce costs, and become more patient centered, primary care is rapidly transforming into a team sport with a broadening roster of new players, including health coaches. This study documents positive rates of resident exposure to health coaches but also great variability in types and amount of exposure that merit further investigation and exploration of ways to grow family medicine residency contact with a diversifying practice team.

<p>Conceptions of Science influence educational practices and interpretations about the construction of scientific knowledge. Therefore, this study aimed to use scientific practice to test the efficiency of non-formal educational environments in training candidates for teacher certification in Biological Sciences. Training of candidates was performed in four meetings held on the State University of Goiás in Anápolis, which features an interpretative trail for environmental education. To test the hypothesis that the training was effective, a paired t-test was performed on the grades obtained in the questionnaires before and at the end of the activities (pretest and post-test). The test showed that the course was effective and led to an increase in students’ knowledge of the content covered (t test: t = 2.95, df = 16, p = 0.01), showing that on average, the scores of students increased in the post-test. Building automation systems are used to meet the increasing requirements for energy efficiency and sustainability of buildings. In such systems, BACnet has established itself as the standard communication protocol for communication between devices from different manufacturers. In order to ensure conformity with the BACnet standard, the devices are certified for conformity. In practice, however, the implementation depth described in the standard profiles is not sufficient for operating a system. As a result, many users demand an extended implementation depth of the BACnet protocol. In most cases, an AMEV certificate is sought, which extends the BACnet objects and their properties in comparison to the standard certification. Despite the BACnet standard certification and the fulfilment of the AMEV test certificate, problems often occur during the operation of building automation systems. These problems can be attributed to the fact that neither the functionality nor the performance of automation stations are determined. In addition, special user requirements are not checked before commissioning a building automation system. For this reason, a model was developed with the help of which a pre-commissioning of the automation station is possible in order to automatically check it for errors and special user requirements before commissioning. Initial tests of automation stations revealed that some user requirements were not met.

During the recent decade, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) have been widely implemented in practice of the aerial survey for the purposes of inventory and mapping. This led to a variety of aerial survey results in terms of both aerial survey parameters and accuracy. Under these conditions, the task of assessing the accuracy of the final product obtained from aerial photographs with a UAV, for example, an orthophoto or a digital elevation model becomes urgent. The Federal State Budgetary Institution “Federal Scientific-Technical Center of Geodesy, Cartography and Spatial Data Infrastructure”, having a metrological service accredited by Rosstandart for the right to conduct metrological certification of measurement methods and metrological examination of documents, makes research tests of hardware and software for digital aerial survey and photogrammetric processing, which determine the values of metrological qualities of hardware and software complexes. The authors present the results of such tests as applied to hardware-andsoftware complexes based on the Geoscan 101 UAV and the Geoscan 201 UAV equipped with Sony DSC RX-1 and Sony DSC-RX1RM2 cameras. The accuracy indicators were obtained for orthophotos, digital surface and relief models, coordinates of targeted and non targeted points of land boundaries and building contours for all land categories and permitted uses of land parcels in accordance with the requirements of the Order of the Ministry of Economic Development of the Russia from 01.03. 2016 No 90.

The National Board of Public Health Examiners (NBPHE, the Board) is the result of many years of intense discussion about the importance of credentialing within the public health community. The Board is scheduled to begin credentialing graduates of programs and schools of public health accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) in 2008. Among the many activities currently underway to improve public health practice, the Board views credentialing as one pathway to heighten recognition of public health professionals and increase the overall effectiveness of public health practice. The process underway includes developing, preparing, administering, and evaluating a voluntary certification examination that tests whether graduates of CEPH-accredited schools and programs have mastered the core knowledge and skills relevant to contemporary public health practice. This credentialing initiative is occurring at a time of heightened interest in public health education, and an anticipated rapid turnover in the public health workforce. It is fully anticipated that active discussion about the credentialing process will continue as the Board considers the many aspects of this professional transition. The Board wishes to encourage these discussions and welcomes input on any aspects relating to implementation of the credentialing process.

Abstract Analytical laboratory results greatly influence medical diagnosis, about 70% of medical decisions are based on laboratory results. Quality assurance and quality control are designed to detect and correct errors in a laboratory’s analytical process to ensure both the reliability and accuracy of test results. Unreliable performance can result in misdiagnosis and delayed treatment. Furthermore, improved quality guarantees increased productivity at a lower cost. Quality assurance programmes include internal quality control, external quality assessment, proficiency surveillance and standardization. It is necessary to try to ensure compliance with the requirements of the standards at all levels of the process. The sources of these standards are the International Standards Organization (ISO), national standards bodies, guidelines from professional organisations, accreditation bodies and governmental regulations. Laboratory networks increase the performance of laboratories in support of diagnostic screening programme. It is essential that genetic laboratories of a network have procedures underpinned by a robust quality assurance system to minimize errors and to reassure the clinicians and the patients that international standards are being met. This article provides an overview of the bases of quality assurance and its importance in genetic tests and it reports the EBTNA quality assurance system which is a clear and simple system available for access to adequate standardization of a genetic laboratory’s network.

Background/Context Teacher preparation suffers from a lack of evidence that guides the design of learning experiences to produce well-prepared beginners. An increasing number of teacher educators are experimenting with practice-embedded approaches to prepare novices for ambitious instruction. This study examines the role of core instructional practices introduced during preparatory experiences in shaping novices’ first-year teaching. Research design Employing a mixed-methods approach, we compare the first-year teaching of two groups of individuals with secondary science certification, one of which comprises graduates from a practice-embedded preparation program, and the other graduates from programs that did not feature practice-embedded preparation. A total of 116 science lessons taught by 41 first-year teachers were analyzed, focusing on the quality of student opportunities to learn (OTL) observed during the lessons. Research questions This study sought answers to two research questions: 1) What are the characteristics of students’ OTL from first-year teachers, one group of whom learned a set of core instructional practices during their preparation program and the other group of whom were not exposed to core practices? 2) Who provides opportunities for students to engage in meaningful disciplinary practices as outlined in the Next Generation Science Standards, during the first year of teaching, if any? How did they create such opportunities? Findings Independent-sample t-tests showed that there are significant mean differences between the two groups (t=3.1∼8.9; p <.001), on four metrics associated with their students’ opportunities to learn. In-depth qualitative case studies reveal two ways that core practices shape instruction in new teachers’ classrooms: (a) they support novices in formulating an actionable curricular vision as advocated by the science education community, and (b) they appear to help novices notice, attend to, and build upon students’ ideas in classrooms with the use of strategies and tools recommended by the program. Conclusions/Recommendations A focus on a set of strategic and intentional practices, designed to help teachers achieve rigorous and equitable learning goals, has potential as a curricular frame for teacher preparation. But the emphasis should be placed on the vision and pedagogical goals that underlie the core practices, rather than the ungrounded use of strategies or tools themselves.

Objectives This study attempted to examine the direction of training experts in school curriculum development based on the concept of expertise and implications through curriculum analysis for professional development, focusing on the ‘doctor’, which is referred to as a representative professional occupation group.
Methods In order to analyze the practical curriculum that contributes to improving doctor expertise for the study, the basic curriculum system of domestic and foreign practice, clinical practice curriculum in doctor basic curriculum, apprenticeship education, and practical test in doctor's national test were analyzed.
Results The directions of the practical curriculum for fostering experts in the development of the school curriculum are as follows. First, the school curriculum development expert was considered to be an expert who can plan, design, operate, and manage the school curriculum based on a wide understanding of the school-level curriculum. Second, the qualifications of experts in the development of the school curriculum were divided into teachers and researchers, and the range was four years with Year 1 to 4, and the scope was presented separately by knowledge and practice. Third, three educational methods were presented: apprenticeship education, problem-based learning, and presentation of practice cases. Fourth, for the education evaluation test, two practical tests for problem situations by item and problem-solving practical tests were designed.
Conclusions First, it is necessary to continuously discuss the necessity of the curriculum for training experts in school curriculum development. Second, there is a need for social consensus on the importance and necessity of practical and practical education to cultivate experts in the development of the school curriculum. Third, legal institutionalization of the school curriculum development expert training and certification system should be made.

The most important issue in the course of operating aircraft is flight safety. World experience of aircraft use shows that the human factor is the main cause of aviation accidents and crashes.
Today, the leading countries in the aircraft manufacturing and use are paying close attention to improving and enhancing existing methods and means of training a pilot as a guarantor of flight safety. Aviation flight simulators play an exceptional role in the general process of training of aviation specialists, both civilian and military. Based on the tasks that can be formulated and practiced on the simulator, a wide variety of specialized training programs for crews on simulators of different configuration is created in the advanced world’s countries.
In military aviation, flight simulators are of special value, as they allow you to simulate a real combat situation, which is very difficult to simulate in peacetime during training. Modern flight simulators are also used for research purposes, for example, to practice the actions of the crew in excess of operational limitations.
Although the need for training is widely recognized, it carries the potential risk of instilling the wrong skills due to the inadequacy of aircraft models. To eliminate such a possibility in world practice, special standards have been developed that regulate the process of creating and certification tests of simulators.
Simulators that are certified to the highest level of international standards have a very high degree of real flight simulation.

Timely transfusion of blood products is crucial, particularly in critical medical situations. Inadequate blood donation rates pose a significant threat to public health, potentially compromising patient care. This study aims to investigate the attitudes and willingness of Syrian college students to engage in blood donation, assess the prevalence of voluntary blood donation, evaluate their understanding of the determinants and procedures involved in the donation process, and identify the key factors influencing their behavior. A cross-sectional study was conducted employing a self-administered questionnaire, distributed in both electronic and hard copy formats among college students. Data analysis was performed using the R Statistical Software. Results were presented in terms of odds ratios (OR), with statistical significance defined at a P value of .05 and a 95% confidence interval. A total of 673 medical students participated in this study, with an average age of 21.6 years. The majority (59.2%) reported a good economic status, and a high level of knowledge (99.7%). A substantial proportion (40.4%) agreed with the notion that blood donation constitutes a personal duty for every eligible individual. Multiple comparison tests revealed a statistically significant P value of .0009716, specifically concerning individuals with low economic status. Our study demonstrates a positive attitude among college students towards voluntary blood product donation. However, the majority have not engaged in voluntary activities unless mandated for specific certification purposes. Donation rates were relatively higher than the reported rates in other similar studies conducted in Middle Eastern countries.

The paper aims to develop a better understanding of Aboriginal peoples’ expectations of the forest environment, and their perceptions of forest planning and management operations on Crown forestlands. The paper also examines the variation in Aboriginal expectations and perceptions across different Aboriginal communities, communities with certified and non-certified forests, three primary user groups (Traditional users, Commercial users, and Leadership), and Aboriginal people with and without knowledge of certification. The understanding is developed on the basis of data from five First Nations, two having FSC-certified forests and three having non-certified forests, all from Ontario. Data were collected using Conceptual Cognitive Content Mapping (3CM) techniques, and were analyzed using various non-parametric statistical tests, including the Freidman test, Sign test, and Kruskal–Wallis test. We conclude that Aboriginal people place the highest importance on a group of expectations related to Aboriginal and Treaty Rights and the second highest on Environmental Values and SFM-related expectations. Expectations related to Participatory Decision-Making and Economic Opportunities and Development are ranked at the same importance level, but of lower importance than Aboriginal and Treaty Rights and Environmental Values and SFM. Aboriginal people generally perceive that forest management is meeting their expectations related to Environmental Values and SFM better than it is meeting their expectations related to Aboriginal and Treaty Rights, Participatory Decision-Making, and Economic Opportunities and Development. Forest certification is perceived to be as important as First Nation negotiations with the Ontario government, Negotiation with industry, Improved business/profitability outlook for the forest industry, Court cases and legal decisions, and Aboriginal claims filed with the federal government. Abstract Background: Many European laboratories offer molecular genetic analysis of the CFTR gene using a wide range of methods to identify mutations causative of cystic fibrosis (CF) and CFTR-related disorders (CFTR-RDs). Next-generation sequencing (NGS) strategies are widely used in diagnostic practice, and CE marking is now required for most in vitro diagnostic (IVD) tests in Europe. The aim of this multicenter study, which involved three European laboratories specialized in CF molecular analysis, was to evaluate the performance of Multiplicom’s CFTR MASTR Dx kit to obtain CE-IVD certification. Methods: A total of 164 samples, previously analyzed with well-established “reference” methods for the molecular diagnosis of the CFTR gene, were selected and re-sequenced using the Illumina MiSeq benchtop NGS platform. Sequencing data were analyzed using two different bioinformatic pipelines. Annotated variants were then compared to the previously obtained reference data. Results and conclusions: The analytical sensitivity, specificity and accuracy rates of the Multiplicom CFTR MASTR assay exceeded 99%. Because different types of CFTR mutations can be detected in a single workflow, the CFTR MASTR assay simplifies the overall process and is consequently well suited for routine diagnostics.

Context.—The mechanics of the practice of medicine in general and of pathology in particular is evolving rapidly with the rise in the use of electronic information systems for managing the care of individual patients, including the ordering and reporting of laboratory tests, maintaining the health of served populations, and documenting the full range of health care activities. Pathologists currently in practice and those in training need to acquire additional skills in informatics to be prepared to maintain a central role in patient care. Objective.—To summarize the evolving landscape of pathology informatics, with particular attention to the preparation of pathologists for this discipline and to the possible influence of the new subspecialty certification in clinical informatics. Data Sources.—Most of the information discussed is drawn from the authors' direct experience with informatics, resident and fellow education, and the organizations supporting these activities in pathology. Conclusions.—The increasing reliance of medical practice on electronic health records and other clinical information systems is creating a greater need for physicians skilled in the use and management of these tools. The establishment of clinical informatics as a formal subspecialty in medicine will likely help secure a role for physicians within information management structures at health care institutions. Pathologists must actively engage in informatics to assure that our specialty is appropriately recognized and represented in this growing discipline.

A cadre of school teachers took part in three semesters of online coursework to earn TESOL certification. They participated in a hybrid university math course and a face-to-face summer institute on effective teaching of math to English learners. Participants took pre and post-tests aligned to Common Core elementary mathematics content and the Praxis Test for Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages. They were observed teaching a math lesson in the beginning of the project to evaluate effectiveness in TESOL instructional strategies. A follow up observation was conducted the following semester. Both observations were scored using the sheltered instruction observation protocol (SIOP Model). Assessment and observation results indicated statistically significant growth in content and pedagogical knowledge and application. A qualitative analysis suggests flexibility in the form of online and hybrid courses, financial support, and practical application of new concepts to current practice are key factors in successful professional development for practicing teachers.

Objective: To (a) determine the impact of Kentucky’s (KY’s) mandate requiring postmortem toxicology testing of coroner cases; (b) identify the influence of coroner experience and training, jurisdiction size, budget, and location on postmortem testing requests; (c) identify facilitators/barriers for postmortem toxicology testing requests and listing the specific drugs involved in drug-poisoning deaths on death certificates. Methods: A modified Dillman approach was used to deliver the survey to KY’s elected coroners between April and May 2016. Responses stratified by identified influence factors were compared using χ2 tests and Fisher exact tests. Results: Fifty-eight percent of coroners reported that drug overdose investigations had changed since the mandate was enacted. Statistically significant differences in responses were found when stratified. Sixty-three percent of coroners reported always using testing results to complete death certificates. Conclusions: Uptake of the mandate for postmortem toxicology testing of all decedents is not yet complete. Policy Implication: Without uptake of the mandate, surveillance efforts may result in undercounting of drug overdose deaths and the involvement of specific drugs. Mandates for enhanced training and modification of funding structure for medico-legal death investigations could facilitate uptake.

Purpose: Quality rating and improvement systems (QRIS) are systems approaches to assist states in providing high quality early childhood education. Texas Rising Star (TRS), a voluntary QRIS, exceeds state licensing standards and meets some obesity prevention guidelines. This study examines differences in physical activity, screen time, and outdoor policies and practices by QRIS certification. Design: Cross-sectional. Setting: Online. Sample: After exclusion criteria, respondents were 431 Texas childcare centers. Measures: 2016 survey of policies and Go NAPSACC best practices. Analysis: Chi-square and t-tests indicated differences in 1) practices and 2) policies by QRIS status. Results: TRS-certified centers reported more policies for physical activity ( M = 4.57 ± 3.07 vs. 3.61 ± 2.95, p = 0.009) and screen time ( M = 1.91 ± 1.84 vs. 1.28 ± 1.56, p < 0.001) than non-certified centers. TRS-certified centers reported significantly higher frequencies for 7 of 14 physical activity practices, however no significant differences for screen time practices were found. Additionally, TRS-certified centers reported more outdoor practices, including more classrooms/storage ( p < 0.001) and vegetable gardens ( p = 0.025). Conclusion: TRS-certified centers reported more physical activity policies and practices, more screen time policies, and more outdoor practices. TRS certification was not associated with screen time practices. QRIS can be a practical way to insert obesity prevention in early care and education. Using items from a widely used survey enables comparisons, however future research is needed in larger-scale studies. Some COVID-19 implications are discussed.

Abstract Purpose LCA is increasingly used in infrastructure policy and planning. This study maps approaches used in comparative LCA of road and rail infrastructure to (1) determine the length of the analysis period, (2) estimate the maintenance frequency, and (3) include the effects of climate change on infrastructure performance. A LCA may need to fulfil different requirements in different decision-contexts. The relevance of the approaches for decision-making in policy and procurement is therefore discussed. Methods Ninety-two comparative LCAs of road and rail infrastructure published in peer-reviewed journals January 2016–July 2020 were reviewed. Papers were found through a systematic process of searching electronic databases, applying inclusion criteria, and conducting backward and forward snowballing. Results and discussion The analysis period was commonly determined based on infrastructure service life. The maintenance frequency was estimated based on current practice, laboratory tests, modelling, or scenarios. The effects of climate change were considered in two papers by comparing results in a control case and in a changed climate. In policy and procurement, current practice approaches are not adapted to innovative solutions or to climate change. Modelling and laboratory tests could improve calculations of the maintenance phase but might have some limitations related to innovative solutions. Scenarios could be readily applied in a policy context; however, in procurement, consistent and generic scenarios should be used. Conclusions Results suggest what approaches could be used to account for maintenance in infrastructure LCA depending on the decision-context. The LCA community is suggested to research other approaches than current practice to account for long analysis periods, climate change, and innovative solutions. Additionally, literature not covered here could be reviewed for additional approaches and perspectives. Examples include stand-alone LCAs, method development papers, papers on the individual approaches and decision-contexts, certification systems, standards, and guidelines.

Авторами предпринята попытка комплексного исследования проблемы внедрения новой формы проведения аттестации - демонстрационного экзамена по стандартам WorldSkills. В работе анализируются различные аспекты (преимущества, недостатки, риски и возможности) внедрения технологий WorldSkills в форме демонстрационного экзамена в образовательную практику организаций среднего профессионального образования. При проведении исследования авторы опирались на метод SWOT-анализа, позволяющий на основе выявления преимуществ, недостатков, возникающих рисков и возможностей дальнейшего развития определить вопросы, требующие своего решения в первоочередном порядке, сформулировать общую стратегию дальнейшего развития (с минимизацией слабых сторон и предотвращением возможных рисков) практики проведения в организациях среднего профессионального образования аттестационных испытаний в формате демонстрационного экзамена по стандартам WorldSkills. В этих целях на начальном этапе исследования были проанализированы имеющиеся на данный момент по рассматриваемой проблеме научные материалы, выявлены и систематизированы различные факторы процесса внедрения в профессиональных образовательных организациях аттестационных испытаний в формате демонстрационного экзамена по стандартам WorldSkills, на основе чего разработаны анкеты для проведения опроса по проблеме исследования. Следующий этап исследования включал проведение анкетирования с использованием метода опроса экспертов. В качестве респондентов выступали преподаватели организаций среднего профессионального образования Ставропольского края, в том числе сертифицированные эксперты WorldSkills, эксперты-мастера WorldSkills, эксперты с правом проведения чемпионатов WorldSkills, эксперты с правом участия в оценке демонстрационного экзамена. Полученные результаты анкетирования позволили провести анализ различных аспектов проведения аттестационных испытаний в формате демонстрационного экзамена с целью выявления стратегических направлений его развития. Issues relevant at the current stage of development of the system of secondary vocational education are revealed to check the level of formation of professional competencies of students in accordance with WorldSkills Standards. The authors have made an attempt to study comprehensively the problem of introducing a new form of certification - a demonstrational exam in accordance with WorldSkills Standards. The work analyzes various aspects (advantages, disadvantages, risks and opportunities) of the introduction of WorldSkills technologies in the form of a demonstrational exam in the educational practice of secondary vocational education organizations. In conducting the study, the authors relied on the SWOT analysis method. This method, based on the identification of advantages, disadvantages, emerging risks and opportunities for further development, made it possible to identify issues that need to be addressed as a matter of priority, as well as formulate a general strategy for the further development (with minimization of weaknesses and prevention of possible risks) of the practice of conducting certification tests in the format of a demonstrational exam in accordance with WorldSkills Standards. To this end, at the initial stage of the study, the scientific materials currently available on the problem under consideration were analyzed, various factors of the process of introducing certification tests in professional educational organizations in the format of a demonstrational exam in accordance with WorldSkills Standards were identified and systematized, on the basis of which questionnaires for conducting a survey on the problem of research were developed. The next phase of the study involved conducting a questionnaire using the expert survey method. The respondents were teachers of secondary vocational education organizations of the Stavropol Territory, including certified WorldSkills experts, WorldSkills experts-masters, experts with the right to hold WorldSkills championships, experts with the right to participate in the evaluation of the demonstrational exam. The results of the questionnaire made it possible to analyze various aspects of the performance tests in the format of a demonstrational exam in order to identify strategic directions for its development.

Abstract Context: Continuing education (CE) is intended to promote professional growth and, ultimately, to enhance professional practice. Objective: To determine certified athletic trainers' participation in formal (ie, approved for CE credit) and informal (ie, not approved for CE credit) CE activities and the perceived effect these activities have on professional practice with regard to improving knowledge, clinical skills and abilities, attitudes toward patient care, and patient care itself. Design: Cross-sectional study. Setting: Athletic training practice settings. Patients or Other Participants: Of a geographic, stratified random sample of 1000 athletic trainers, 427 (42.7%) completed the survey. Main Outcome Measure(s): The Survey of Formal and Informal Athletic Training Continuing Education Activities was developed and administered electronically. The survey consisted of demographic characteristics and Likert-scale items regarding CE participation and perceived effect of CE on professional practice. Internal consistency of survey items was determined using the Cronbach α (α = 0.945). Descriptive statistics were computed for all items. An analysis of variance and dependent t tests were calculated to determine differences among respondents' demographic characteristics and their participation in, and perceived effect of, CE activities. The α level was set at .05. Results: Respondents completed more informal CE activities than formal CE activities. Participation in informal CE activities included reading athletic training journals (75.4%), whereas formal CE activities included attending a Board of Certification–approved workshop, seminar, or professional conference not conducted by the National Athletic Trainers' Association or affiliates or committees (75.6%). Informal CE activities were perceived to improve clinical skills or abilities and attitudes toward patient care. Formal CE activities were perceived to enhance knowledge. Conclusions: More respondents completed informal CE activities than formal CE activities. Both formal and informal CE activities were perceived to enhance athletic training professional practice. Informal CE activities should be explored and considered for CE credit.

The results of students testing at the Novosibirsk State Technical University (NSTU) determining their cognitive, motivational, and personal characteristics are considered in this paper and information about all past certification tests is provided for the curriculum.

The purpose of this study was to find out: the school strategy, procedure, forms, and evaluation to cooperate with the world of work. The type of research is qualitative with a case study approach. The subjects in this study were the head of the department, the chairman of the special job fairs, the vice-principal of public relations, the vice-principal of curriculum, the head of competence skills, and industry that were in cooperation with the school. The methods of collecting the data were in-depth interviews and documentation. The results show that: (1) the school strategy in cooperation with industry began with industry visits, requesting permission to do industrial practice, good communication, submitting proposals related to school potential in the form of profiles, being active in participating in school promotions, utilizing the role of industry as a guest teacher, being a pre-service place and outsourcing to industry; (2) the cooperation procedure analyzed the community, in this case, the world of work, established communication, and Involved world of work; (3) the forms of cooperation were the training of skills improvement in the field of science and technology, exchange of information, curriculum synchronization and development, implementation of internships, implementation of competency and certification tests, industry visits, industrial work practices, special job fairs, recruitment; (4) the evaluation of management in the implementation of the cooperation was included in the "good" category.

In spite of the facts that validity is known as a unified concept in contemporary theory and practice, investigating the sub-construct of this concept enlightens the discipline to a great extent. Predictive validity of high-stakes tests such as English proficiency tests (EPTs) which are used for critical educational decisions is an example. EPT of Islamic Azad University (IAU), as a localized form of national and international scale proficiency tests, is served as an obligatory part of exit program for PhD candidates. Considering the fact that manipulating ESP texts is a major language learning goal in the university, the current research was an attempt to examine the predictive validity of IAU-EPT against a valid third measure in comparison with other EPT exams. To this aim, adopting Weir’s socio-cognitive framework, an ESP test of politics was developed and validated. Then, the test was administered to 19 PhD candidates of politics with IAU-EPT certification and 16 PhD candidates certified at other EPTs (TOEFL, GRE, and Tolimo). Pearson correlation was employed to investigate the relationship between their authorized EPT scores and their performance in a real context validated ESP test. The findings revealed a weak predicting value for IAU-EPT in a ESP task while a strong and significant correlation was reported between standard EPTs scores and ESP test. Further investigation is required to investigate the construct validity of IAU-EPT. Future researchers are recommended to include more participants from other disciplines. These findings have implications for language learners, language teachers, researchers and educational policy makers.

Purpose It is becoming increasingly clear that as the pressures of climate change increase around the world, all nations must strive to lower their carbon footprint through conservation. If the growth trend of green building and infrastructure construction is to be continued and improved upon, then evidence must be collected as to the benefits they bring about, and the level of support they enjoy in the market. The purpose of this paper is to shed light on the economic performance of green buildings by evaluating whether LEED for Homes and BOMA-BEST properties capture higher market valuations and lower vacancy rates. These types of research questions have not been investigated to a great deal in the Canadian context. The primary analysis concerning municipal market valuation of green buildings was conducted using robust ordinary least squares and logistic regression models. Commercial vacancy rates were compared through the use of χ2 tests. Our analysis did not lead to conclusive evidence that there exists a “green” premium in the real estate market with respect to municipal market valuations. The authors argue that this may largely be due to municipal appraisal methods that currently do not incorporate sustainability factors. As such, they may not adequately reflect market tastes and trends. Furthermore, while the vacancy rates of green commercial buildings were, on the whole, lower than their non-green counterparts, the differences were not statistically significant. Given these results, the authors propose a set of research activities that the academic community should pursue. Design/methodology/approach Statistical techniques are utilized test whether green certification (LEED/BOMA-BEST) leads to higher municipal valuation for both commercial and residential green properties, using regression analysis. Furthermore, χ2 tests are conducted to evaluate whether certification leads to lower vacancy rates for commercial properties. Findings In terms of valuation, certification does not exert (on average) a positive role in terms of higher valuations for both commercial and residential properties. However, with respect to vacancy rates, there is a tendency towards lower vacancy rates for green properties, but the relationship is not statistically significant. Research limitations/implications The next set of research needs to gather greater amount of data with respect to how municipal evaluations are performed since the results are counter-intuitive. Greater tracking of the financial performance of green buildings should be conducted and made available for both public and private bodies. Particularly, rental and sale prices of green buildings need to be tracked in an organized manner. Practical implications The valuation techniques utilized by the municipal authorities need revision as green properties are being assessed without appropriate guidance from educational institutions. Furthermore, the limited amount of “green” valuation techniques in existence may not be applied. Originality/value This is the first Canadian-based research looking into the valuation of green certification using rigorous quantitative statistical techniques and original and publicly available data. Furthermore, it holds important lessons for municipal authorities with respect to green building valuation beyond Canada as the limitations of current practice go mostly likely beyond the North American context.

Background. The rehabilitation and return to sport (RTS) criteria used after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction seem to vary between physiotherapists in different countries. However, no study has been conducted to investigate the post-operative rehabilitation and RTS criteria following ACL reconstruction used by physiotherapists in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Aim. The purpose of this study is to summarize the clinical practice and RTS criteria used by physiotherapists treating patients following ACL reconstruction in the UAE, and to investigate the factors associated with the commonly used RTS criteria. Material and methods. An electronic survey questionnaire was distributed to UAE physiotherapists. The questionnaire included questions related to demographic information, clinical practice, and RTS criteria employed by UAE physiotherapists. Results. A total of 108 physiotherapists voluntarily participated in the study. Approximately only 25% adhered to the established RTS criteria before RTS. About 88% of physiotherapists base their clearance decisions on how well they do in functional assessments like balance checks, hop tests, and running and sprinting biomechanics. A multidisciplinary team decided on the RTS clearance, according to 47% of physiotherapists. The most often utilized RTS criteria did not significantly correlate with parameters including academic standing, years of experience, nationality, specialty certification, or the type of license held by UAE physiotherapists, according to the study. Conclusion. Most physiotherapists in the UAE were not adhering to the most recommended RTS criteria post-ACL reconstruction in their clinical practice, and none of the evaluated physiotherapist-related factors showed a significant association with RTS criteria following ACL reconstruction.

Abstract Context: Computerized neurocognitive testing is becoming popular among clinicians evaluating sport-related concussions across all levels of sport. Baseline neurocognitive testing has been recommended to provide more accurate representation of the preconcussion cognitive status of individual athletes. However, little is known about the use of baseline neurocognitive testing in concussion assessment and management. Objective: To examine implementation and practice trends of sports medicine professionals using baseline neurocognitive testing at the high school and collegiate levels. Design: Quantitative survey research. Setting: Online survey. Patients or Other Participants: Certified athletic trainers (ATs) from approximately 1209 US institutions listed on the ImPACT Web site were recruited. A total of 399 ATs completed the survey, for a response return rate of 32.7%. Main Outcome Measure(s): Survey questions addressed educational level, years of certification, employment setting, percentage of athletes baseline tested, and accuracy of baseline tests. Other items addressed postconcussive neurocognitive testing protocols and scenarios for return-to-play decisions based on neurocognitive testing. Results: Nearly all ATs (94.7%) administered baseline computerized neurocognitive testing to their athletes. However, only 51.9% examined these baseline tests for validity. The majority of ATs indicated that they administer baseline neurocognitive tests most frequently to football players (88.4%), followed by women's soccer players (78.8%) and men's soccer players (71.2%). Nearly all respondents (95.5%) stated that they would not return a symptomatic athlete to play if the athlete's neurocognitive scores were back to baseline. However, when asked if they would return an athlete who is symptom free but who scores below his or her baseline, 86.5% responded no, 9.8% responded yes, and 3.8% indicated that it depended on the importance of the competition. Conclusions: The use of baseline testing, baseline testing readministration, and postconcussion protocols among ATs is increasing. However, the ATs in this study reported that they relied more on symptoms than on neurocognitive test scores when making return-to-play decisions.

Abstract Background and study aims Endoscope reprocessing has been associated with a variable failure rate. Our aim was to present an overview on current practices for reprocessing in Italian facilities and discuss the principle critical points. Methods In 2014 the Italian Society for Digestive Diseases implemented an accreditation program in collaboration with an independent organization for certification and with the Italian Association for Endoscopy Technical Operators. During a 1-day site visit of the endoscopy center, two endoscopists, one nurse, and the representative of the certification body evaluated the endoscope reprocessing. Results As of July 1, 2020, 28 endoscopy centers had been accredited. Ten centers are completing the measures to correct deficiencies found at the visit. Three centers withdrew from the program. The accreditation program has found variations between the various centers, confirming the poor compliance with guidelines. Major deviations from the standards, established by the model before the site visit according to national and international guidelines, concerned instrument cleaning (44.7 % of the centers), instrument storage (23.7 %), and microbiological tests (31.6 %). Conclusions Our overview demonstrated the lack of many reprocessing phases, which are important to prevent endoscopy-associated infections. Accreditation can achieve a transformation in quality and safety of reprocessing with the Italian centrally-led approach.

Context Recent recommendations have emphasized return-to-learn (RTL) protocols to aid athletes in recovery from sport-related concussion (SRC) but have been based primarily on anecdotal evidence. Objective To investigate the RTL practices of certified athletic trainers (ATs) after an SRC. Design Cross-sectional study. Setting Online survey. Patients or Other Participants A total of 1083 individuals (27%) from a random sample of 4000 ATs in the National Athletic Trainers' Association membership database completed an electronic survey. Participants consisted of 729 self-identified secondary school ATs (SSATs; 67.3%; experience = 14.0 ± 9.7 years) and 354 self-identified collegiate ATs (CATs; 32.7%; experience = 13.4 ± 9.7 years). Main Outcome Measure(s) We used χ2 analyses to assess respondent differences related to current knowledge, current practices, and available resources. Independent t tests were used to compare SSATs and CATs on years of certification and annual number of SRCs evaluated. Results Of our total respondents, 41.2% (n = 446) correctly indicated the absence of evidence-based RTL guidelines. Whereas most (73.9%, n = 800) respondents had an established RTL policy, only 38.1% (n = 413) used such guidelines in their clinical practice. Most (97.1%, n = 708) SSATs and 82.2% (n = 291) of CATs had access to (a) mental health professional(s); however, minorities of SSATs (21.4%, n = 156) and CATs (37.0%, n = 131) never accessed these resources to care for concussed student-athletes. Conclusions Our results suggested that, despite the absence of empirical evidence, most surveyed ATs incorporated some form of RTL protocol in their SRC management policy. The varying AT knowledge, clinical practices, and resources highlighted by our results should be considered when creating or refining an RTL protocol.

Abstract Background and Objectives Certified nursing assistant (CNA) turnover and retention are critical aspects of facilities’ ability to provide cost-effective, high-quality person-centered care. Previous studies and industry practice often treat turnover and retention as similar concepts, assuming that low turnover and high retention are synonymous. The study addressed the question of whether turnover and retention rates differ and if so, what those differences mean for nursing home practice, policy, and research. Research Design and Methods This study examines facility-level factors associated with CNA retention and turnover rates using 2015 data from the Ohio Biennial Survey of Long-Term Care Facilities, Ohio Medicaid Cost Reports, Certification and Survey Provider Enhanced Report, and the Area Health Resource File. Using bivariate tests and regression analysis, we compare rates and the factors associated with retention and turnover. Results The mean facility annual retention rate was 64% and the mean annual turnover rate was 55%. As expected, there was a statistically significant and negative correlation between the rates (r = −0.26). However, some facilities had both high retention and high turnover and some had low rates for both measures. Not all the variables that are associated with turnover are also associated with retention. Discussion and Implications CNA retention is not simply the absence of CNA turnover. Given the differences, nursing homes may need to use strategies and policies designed to target a particular stability measure.

Abstract Aluminum and its alloys is one of the extensively used non-ferrous metal in aerospace engineering applications due to its excellent properties like higher strength to weight ratio, non-magnetic property, high thermal conductivity, good machinability, recyclability, and excellent formability. However, welding of aluminum and its alloys has always been a challenge due to drastic reduction in strength near heat affected zone (HAZ). Due to softness, ductility, lower melting point of aluminum and its alloys impose additional challenges to weld aluminum alloy components. Due to this, the quality and quantum of skill set needed to weld aluminum alloy joints for flight critical components is much more than that of welding of ferrous materials. The qualification and certification of welder is one of the prime requirements in welding applications especially in aerospace industry. This paper mainly discusses the various aspects involved in qualifying and certifying a welder for tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding process of aluminum alloys, which is treated as one of the special processes. The welder certification is a written verification that weld joints produced by welder meets the prescribed standard of welder performance. It is to verify the ability of an individual to execute a qualified welding procedure specification to produce a sound weld. Aluminum alloy 6xxx series is considered for base metal for sample preparation and weld joint assessment studies, as it is one of the prevalently used aluminum alloy material in unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) applications. Weld samples are prepared as per internationally practiced standards and welding procedure specification (WPS) is recorded. Various mechanical tests carried out on weld samples during certification process are discussed in the paper. Weld joints are subjected to tensile testing, bending test and macro test. The certifying agencies are involved at every stage to ensure consistency of welder performance.

Background: Corona Virus spreads via droplets and air. Dentists are at high risk due to proximity to the oral cavity and the production of droplets during procedures. Aim: To assess awareness of COVID19 among dental professionals and check their knowledge about the COVID-19 disease, its route of spread, clinical symptoms, tests for diagnosis, prevention in dental practice for a safe return to the dental practice. Methods: Online questionnaires were shared with dentists all over the country using convenience and snowball sampling. The questionnaire assessed knowledge, aptitude and effect on dental practice. SPSS, v. 21.0 was used for analysis. Results: Total number of participants was (316) and were from all provinces of the country (Punjab, Sindh, Baluchistan, KPK, Gilgit Baltistan). Most of the entries were from Sindh province (58.1%). Most of the participants are qualified as BDS(69.4%), 11.7% are FCPS, 5.7% are BDS with additional certifications. Participation from the age group 20-30 years was 74% followed by 18% of the age group 30-40. Conclusions: Dentists of our country were well aware of this pandemic and are fully equipped to manage their practices while preventing cross-contamination.
