Bu çalışmada yazar Orhan Pamuk’un Kafamda Bir Tuhaflık adlı eserinde işlenen göç, göç olgusuna dair kavramlarla ele alınarak, esere yansıtılan göçmenlik psikolojisi üzerinde durulacaktır. Göç aynı zamanda bir uzam değişimi anlamına da geldiği için, değişen uzamların bireylerin üzerindeki etkisi de yine irdelenmeye çalışılacaktır. Pamuk bu eserinde kırdan kente göç eden Mevlut Karataş ve onun çevresindeki insanların hayatlarını, İstanbul’la imtihanlarını işlemiş ve bununla birlikte Türkiye’nin yaşadığı siyasi ve sosyal anlamdaki pek çok değişimi İstanbul üzerinden eserinde göstermiştir. Göçün ekonomik ve sosyal imkanlar açısından daha iyi bir yaşam sağlaması gibi beklentilerle beraberinde getirdiği sıkıntıları, uyumsuzlukları ve hayal kırıklıklarını da işlediği iddia edilebilir. Çalışmada kişilerin İstanbul’a atfettikleriyle elde ettiklerinin çatışmasına da yer verilerek, kentle ve kent kültürüyle olan çatışmaları irdelenmeye çalışılacaktır. Çalışmada metne dayalı inceleme yönteminden yararlanılacaktır. ENGLISH ABSTRACTImmigration and space elements in Orhan Pamuk’s novel Kafamda Bir TuhaflıkIn this article, migration in Orhan Pamuk’s novel ‘Kafamda Bir Tuhaflık’ will be discussed in migration aspects and phycology of migrants. Because of migration means a changement of place at the same time, its effects to the characters will be discussed, too. In this novel, Pamuk used a character, Mevlut Karataş and people around him who has migrated İstanbul from a village for describing their lifes in İstanbul as an immigrant. Beside this he also showed some changes in social and political life of Turkey by means of migration. Pamuk described migration as a way of getting wealthier life and its negativeness, especially cultural and psychological areas. In this article it will also discussed that their expectation from İstanbul and the results. In this novel the gap which is between rural and urban life is been detected writer.

Abstract Among the Armenian actors who were essential in creating and sustaining Istanbul theaters at the turn of the twentieth century, Eliza Binemeciyan (1890-1981) emerged as a prominent one. In the aftermath of taking part in the play Kösem Sultan in 1912, she became the star of Istanbul theaters for more than a decade until she left her beloved city when she was 35 years old. She never returned to Istanbul, the city that was her home and where the remains of her parents, both well known Armenian actors, were buried. Her story as well as the stories of her Armenian colleagues reveal the decline of cosmopolitanism and the rise of nationalism in Istanbul. The change of scene in Istanbul theaters from multi-lingualism and cosmopolitanism to nationalism was like a microcosm of the policies of Turkification during the decline of the Ottoman Empire. In many memoirs about the era, Eliza Binemeciyan’s departure was normalized since she was depicted as an actor whose absence fostered the acting careers of Muslim Turkish women without much regard for her remarkable presence in Istanbul theaters.

Lofts are housing forms converted from warehouse-workshop into a “habitable environment” in coastal towns of Europe and the USA after the Industrial Revolution. Particularly positioned in coastal towns of New York, Loft life made an impact in the world over time. It became a new form of living when artists converted structures like factories into habitable environment. From past to today, all national and international developments during the process affected and accelerated development of the constant evolution of housing concept. In that sense, in this study, the meaning of Lofts in Istanbul and the effect and change of socio-cultural stratification on spatial conversion of housing consumerism has been examined in the context of Istanbul. Especially, process of gentrification, shaped by effects of urban transformation post 1980, and cultural development affected by this process, attendant Loft life has become an accelerating way of life. In this context, historical and stylistic value and especially usage of Loft living has been examined. In the first chapter; past, present and the post-1980 development of housing sector in Istanbul, in the second chapter, with a thriving cultural life, and Loft formation, has been examined in the context of structural criteria, resulting three different Lofts have been discussed in detail. In the third section, three different types of Loft have been analyzed in the context of space depending on examples. As a result of researches, three different types of Lofts, “Original”, “Semi” and “Imitation” concepts have become clear and it has been concluded that “Imitation Loft” formation gives direction to life in Istanbul.

Historians of the Middle East and the Balkans have paid little attention to intercommunal relations in Ottoman cities prior to the onset of nationalism and the spread of communal violence in the nineteenth and early twentieth century. Each national and religious community has, therefore, focused on writing and imagining its own history with very little attention to the larger social milieu, economic and social conditions, and interactions outside confessional boundaries in the pre-modern period. The history of the Jewish community has received more attention from scholars, while that of the Greek and Armenian communities has been largely ignored. The literature on Islamic cities also tends to emphasize the homogenous composition of residential neighborhoods in contrast to the diversity of the market place. I will show that in Istanbul, residential quarters remained mixed in their social and religious make-up until Muslim migration from the Balkans during the nineteenth century enhanced the ratio of Muslims. Moreover, the debate among Ottomanists has focused on the existence or absence of themilletsystem (autonomous communal organizations) prior to the nineteenth century. Scholars have argued that themilletsystem was a nineteenth century development and that there was great fluidity and interaction among the minority communities and the Muslim majority in Ottoman cities. In the nineteenth century, Tanzimat reforms also centralized the administration of confessional communities and set legal boundaries between them that used to be more porous. Elsewhere, I have discussed the plural legal system in eighteenth century Istanbul.

The aim of this article is to form a sociological perspective for new applications and to evaluate the local authority applications by observing the effects of urbanization on ‘aging’ and ‘being old’. There is a swift transformation process in Turkey’s social life. Family structure is also changing along with the social transition occurring in the urbanization process. Elders are the main actors that this transition effects and their position has been changed in society. With the social change, something about elders has become problematic with family bands. With urbanization, elders have been faced with ‘loneliness’, ‘cost of living’, and ‘service care’ problems. To overcome these cases, special social supports and raising local authority’s consciousness of responsibility is needed. Although aging in Turkey is not as vital a ‘problem’ as in developed societies, it is obvious that there is an upward movement. As a result of increased living standards and development in health areas, average human lifespan and life expectancy has increased. Although Turkey has a young population percentage-wise, the actual number of elder people is quite high. The increment in elderly population in Turkey and reasons like the change of family structure, which make elder service important, are influential factors determining the subject of this thesis. Within this framework, supporting home care service is a goal. Towards this aim, the social problems that elders may face in urban areas and solving applications for these problems will be evaluated from a sociological perspective. Within this research, it is aimed to understand urban elders’ life from a new perspective. Another way of understanding social processes is to observe the process and to conduct interviews with the related actors. Questions in our study will be divided into “factual questions” and “comparative questions”. In this study, mainly two resources will be used, primary sources, defined as oldies who are living in urban areas and encounter the opportunities and difficulties of this city, their families and health workers who have a direct interaction with oldies, the opinions of people (largely city officials) and as minor sources, firstly sociology and the literature of books, theses, articles, reports etc. which are about socıal science. The methodological tendency of this study will be in qualitative form because of the general features of oldies that are its object. The semi-structured form will be applied to measure the assessments of people who are in contact with oldies and also their personal life, economic status, lifestyle, family, kinship, neighbor relations and their expectations of life. Beyond generalizing about oldies in this study, to make a case determination will be tried as a feature of the qualitative study method. We aim to carry out the study in the framework of one of the qualitative study types, using the data collection techniques of literature survey, questionnaire, and meeting (structured, not-structured) will be used for our study with different dimensions of observation techniques.

The immigrant remittances emerged due to the international migration occupy an important place especially in the economies of developed and underdeveloped countries along with their serious contributions. In addition to their macro level importance these remittances sent to family members for various reasons cause also important transformations in the socio-economic structure of society. This study aims to analyse the effect of sending remittance on immigrants’ life satisfaction. The surveys were conducted face-to-face with 1006 immigrants living in Istanbul and the responses were analysed using the OLS analysis method. The questions in the survey were prepared in English and in Turkish. Immigrants who are a part of the study are people who have legally obtained a residence permit in Turkey. The dependent variable in this study was “All things considered, how satisfied are you with your life as a whole these days?” It is life satisfaction, which consists of individual answers to the question. Participants were asked to rate on a ranking scale ranging from 0 (not at all satisfied) to 10 (completely satisfied. People from 89 different countries took part in the study. Results indicate that sending remittance reduces people’s happiness. People who have left their country due to economic conditions are observed to be more unhappy. On the other hand savings make people happier. In addition people who think that their financial status is better after the migration are happier than others.

Externalization that became prominent in 1980s with the globalization brought along dramatic changes in social and spatial areas. The social, cultural and economic events that took place on an international level thanks to globalization made the impact of change felt which was reflected on the urban space and, therefore, on the house, resulting in an increase in the importance of the residential sector. Externalization and developed economic structure enabled more investments into houses which introduced a concept of housing populated in urban fringes starting from the city centers. The housing concept which was shaped by the impacts of the urban transformation after 1980 turned into a new emerging lifestyle in Istanbul in 2000s. Accordingly, the study aims to establish the position of housing in Istanbul and new meanings formed by the socio-cultural changes. In this sense, housing before and after 1980, globalization, gentrification, urban transformation, spatial segregation, socio-economic and cultural aspects were discussed based on the structural benchmarks, and 4 different housing forms, namely the “Loft”, “Residence”, “Terraced House”, and “Gated Communities”, with individual structural examples. This study, thus, aims to question the form of tenancy of these houses created through varying concepts and concerns today. The results obtained showed that the housing as an indicator of cultural life in Istanbul has turned into a lifestyle that is shaped by similar aspects and commercial concern, despite different approaches or production forms, eliminating the traces of the cultural life of the society.

The purpose of this study is to examine the experiences of students who are actively engaged in sports. The study seeks an answer to the following questions: "To what extent do students who engage with sports maintain a balance between their school life and sports life? The study is based on a qualitative study focusing on the lived experiences of sports athletes. The data collection process consists of interviews and written reflections. During the analysis of the narrative stories, two themes were identified relating to the experience of being a student-athlete: Maintaining a balance between sports life and school life was the main theme that emerged in the study. Migration is a natural tendency of human society. Solidification of the modern nation-state led to the regularized protection of states’ borders and territory and reduced the ability of migrants to negotiate their integration into a host society. The political and economic turmoil of the era following the First World War exacerbated the problematic relationships between the nation-state and migrants. Many migrants were excluded from the normal territorial and legal space of post-war global society and were categorized under a new political label as refugees. With the example of Russian Civil War (1918-21) refugees in Istanbul, the article investigates the process of constructing a refugee identity among these people. This included producing a refugee space, which was accomplished through imagining space as a resource, reimagining the meaning of Istanbul, constructing refugee camps, and engagement with the experience of the spatial hierarchy of Istanbul city life. I argue that the experience of Russian refugees in Istanbul after the First World War heavily contributed to the formation of today’s modern refugee regime.

The contrast between Muslim Istanbul and Anatolia in the late Ottoman years was based on the large-scale socioeconomic dichotomies that often set great traditional cities apart from their hinterlands. These differences were also felt in the rhythms of ordinary domestic life in the city. Istanbul was marked by a unique system of marriage and household formation, one that had cultural connections with the Anatolian hinterland, but that also resembled those found in other major centers in the Mediterranean basin. This pattern is not at all what it seems to have been to many Turks or to most European observers of Turkey in the 19th century.

Le titre de cette thèse, « Lacan et l’American way of life », est une façon d’interroger Jacques Lacan et les États-Unis afin de savoir pourquoi et comment son enseignement fut, pendant si longtemps, de ce côté-là de l’Atlantique, difficilement pris au sérieux dans la clinique. Si la théorisation lacanienne a été tenue à l’écart de la psychanalyse américaine, c’est parce que celle-ci avait d’autres repères. Nous en isolons trois : l’ego psychology, qui domina l’orientation de la psychanalyse américaine à partir des années 1930 ; Wilhelm Reich, le promoteur de la révolution sexuelle ; et les gender studies, pour lesquelles la psychanalyse est une pratique qui doit être abandonnée car trop soumise aux signifiants du patriarcat. Ces trois scansions – ego psychology, Reich, gender studies – sont trois théories du sexuel qui ont marqué les États-Unis, construisant chacune un sens sexuel qui exclut Lacan des enjeux cliniques. C’est ce que cette thèse se propose de démontrer. En commençant avec la réaction de Lacan à l’ego psychology et son retour à Freud, nous continuons vers la fin de l’enseignement de Lacan (à partir des années 1970) qui fonde une clinique orientée par le réel, qui repense la psychanalyse, y compris ce que Lacan avait d’abord affirmé. Le réel – le concept de réel – sera la boussole qui nous permet de déplier cette démonstration. L’œuvre de Lacan, particulièrement ses dernières formulations commentées par Jacques-Alain Miller, porte en elle des issues aux impasses de l’ego psychology et son culte du Moi, de Reich et sa jouissance phallique génitale, et des gender studies empêtrées dans les identifications et leurs contestations de celles-ci
This thesis, “Lacan and the American Way of Life”, examines Jacques Lacan and the United States in order to understand why Lacan’s teachings have had difficulty being taken seriously in American clinical practice. If psychoanalysts in the United States have kept Lacanian theory at a distance, it is perhaps because of the ways American practice has been oriented. We isolate three orientations: ego psychology, which had a strong influence in the United States as early as the 1930’s; Wilhelm Reich, the Viennese psychoanalyst and brilliant student of Freud who emigrated to the US and became known for his Sexual Revolution; and gender studies which considers that psychoanalysis, being overly subjected to patriarchal signifiers, should be abandoned. These movements represent three modalities of sexual theory that have left their mark on America, each bringing a meaning to sexuality in a way that excludes Lacan’s work. We examine these movements from a Lacanian point of view starting with his response to ego psychology (his return to Freud) and continuing with his later teachings (after 1970) that founded a practice oriented by the real – a re-thinking of psychoanalysis. The Lacanian concept of the real will be the compass that guides us through this demonstration. We will see that Lacan’s works, and especially his later formulations as explained by Jacques-Alain Miller, provide a way out of the impasses of ego psychology and its ego cult, of Reich and his genital phallic jouissance, and of gender studies and their entanglement with identity

This project explores a curious facet of early cinema that has not been studied as yet: the relationship between Turkish modernity and the culture of spectatorship within the context of the late nineteenth century’s viewing habits along with the era of early and silent cinema in Istanbul. The aim of this project is to examine the evolution of viewing habits in Istanbul at a particular period in which a radical cultural transformation was experienced, namely from the 1890s to the 1930s, when the late Ottoman era with its pre-cinematic shows, the cinematograph, and silent films led to the early Turkish Republic and the end of silent cinema. In order to cover the shift in the reception of early cinema, this study makes use of revisionist works on early cinema and on modernity in Ottoman history. To this end, newspapers, novels, memoirs and consular trade records that formed the majority of the primary sources of this project are analyzed. The transformation of Istanbulite spectatorship was initially experienced through a rupture in the late nineteenth century created by the global flow of mechanical images. The cinematograph was viewed by a multi- ethnic public that was accustomed to seeing both traditional and other more widely recognized pre-cinematic shows such as the shadow play, public storytelling, dioramas, panoramas and magic lanterns. At first the early cinematograph displays were haphazard and parts of other shows. Yet, the international influence of the early cinema attracted a curiosity-driven public even if the same public was critical of the imperfect technology of the apparatus. With the outbreak of World War I, nationalist resistance played a role in the reception of popular European films, particularly Italian melodramas. The end of the war caused the demise of the Ottoman Empire and the foundation of the Turkish Republic, after which, cinema started to be seen as an educational tool in the service of nation-building.

Car nos sociétés individualistes nourrissent un complexe vis-à-vis des sociétés holistes. My dissertation is a critical philosophical interpretation of selected constructs of Haudenosaunee culture addressing barriers to liberation from colonialism; the decolonization of the disruption of the original humanistic constructs rooted within Onkwehónweneha; and what transformation means in the 21^st century. I also explore the contemporary realities of Haudenosaunee life from the Seven Spans paradigm of standards established by the Kaianerekowa – The Great Law of Peace; Gaiwiio – the Teachings of Handsome Lake; Indigenous deconstructive methodology framed by cultural transformation; and the construct of "extending the rafters" as a critical analysis of the Haudenosaunee from within.

Haudenosaunee culture is growing and flourishing, and in recent years, the young people who are driven by identity are seeking more understanding from life and culture. They are often met with resistance by self-appointed doorkeepers of the culture who are protectionist, and, in their attempts to protect, they discourage people. Their family's lack of activity in the longhouse community is often cited as reasonable cause. This is contrary to the original birthright of every Haudenosaunee person with respect to their culture. To challenge this issue, I advocate for more written cultural knowledge to be produced by Indigenous scholars as one critical step to cultural inclusion.

How we think, why we dream, how we solve problems, and what is important to a Haudenosaunee person are accumulating notions of cultural knowledge being forgotten as the Elders, the wisdom-keepers of repository knowledge, make their journey back to the Skyworld. It is vital that we explore these ideas in a process of decolonizing and experiential cultural learning connected to the important stories of the culture. This is an attempt at focusing that challenge with cause for dialogue.

A Texas-based oil exploration and production company takes up residence in the area, causing a stir in the neighborhood. Long-time local residents experience their daily lives amid a tourist driven economy and reaffirm their aspirations to leave despite significant obstacles and limitations. In "Show Me the Way to Go Home," a young waitress is stranded after a car accident and seeks help from residents living on the single row of houses in the area. In "Give Death Grace," a resident artist leaves to resolve her tumultuous past with her father. In "A Good Little Fisherwoman," a woman deals with the repercussions of her recent reproductive decisions during a fishing trip. In "Little Fires," a local man deals with the tragic burn injury of a child while also facing deeply rooted resentments with his mother. In "Dwelling," an aging local must decide whether or not she will sell her home to two strangers. In "Other Important Areas of Functioning," a woman decides to discontinue her mood stabilizing medications in favor of a more natural lifestyle. While this place means something different to each of these characters, they all coexist while facing individual challenges.

AbstractMany gay villages (or “gayborhoods”) arose in the wake of the gay liberation movement attracted a good deal of academic research within the last 40 years. Unfortunately, this hyper focus on certain spaces often populated by white gay men has frequently eclipsed research on other types of LGBTQ areas as well as other geographies beyond the global north. This chapter aims to address this gap, taking an ordinary cities perspective (Robinson, 2006) and asking how we can develop models that are conceptually useful for understanding the life of a more diverse array of LGBTQ spaces across the globe. To answer this question we avoid linear models of change by developing a new model based on a conceptual framework derived from physics: centripetal and centrifugal forces. The advantage of this model is its explicit recognition of the ways that social, economic, and political forces and their manifestations influence queer spaces. We use two cases from relatively under-studied regions; Atlanta and Istanbul to illustrate the utility of this framework. The “in-betweenness” of these cities, linking south and north as well as west and east, makes them a haven for queers and others fleeing the conservative surroundings in the search for more attractive and welcoming places for marginalized LGBTQ individuals. This chapter draws on the authors’ lived experiences, prior research, and additional interviews to conduct a relational reading of queer spaces with emphasis on the ways that LGBTQ people circulate and congregate in a wider range of urban areas. This comparative strategy and relational reading of queer spaces expands the narrow focus from normalized narratives of gayborhoods to a broader “analysis of the heterogeneity and multiplicity of metropolitan modernities” (Roy 2009, p. 821) of queer spaces.

The recently opened 1915Çanakkale bridge 300 km south-east of Istanbul has a main span of over two kilometres and a total length of 4,608 m.Based on the bridge kinematics, complex expansion joints at both main deck ends with movements of up to 2800 mm, low noise emission and highest durability were required.In addition, the approach bridges to the main bridge, which are seismically isolated, requested large transversal movements.So-called modular swivel joist expansion joints allow six degrees of freedom: displacements transverse, longitudinal and vertical to the direction of traffic as well as any kind of rotations can be compensated, to address the specific needs of a suspension bridge located in a highly seismic region. The expansion joint structure, consisting of bars supporting the lamellas, features a new low-friction, almost wear-free guiding system with a next generation of sliding material. This prevents restraints, provides a superior smoothly controlled movement mechanism, and increases the service life to at least 50 years.Particularly, an approved sliding material (modified UHMWPE, pre-loaded and equipped with greased dimples within the moving components, which has been successfully applied for two decades in the bridge bearings, grants proper function for a certified accumulated travel path of 50+ kilometres even combined with high seismic displacement velocities. A more precise prismatic guide mechanism was developed to achieve a permanent contact between all relevant sliding elements.In this way both the bridge bearings and the expansion joints systems can reach the same certified nominal life and durability while resisting major earthquakes without damage.The expansion joints were additionally equipped on their surface with welded rhombic steel plates to remarkably reduce the noise, increase the driving comfort and assure a durable anti-skid resistant across the overpassing surface. Also, welded instead of bolted applications within the construction enhance fatigue-proof and durable service lifetime of the applied expansion joints.The joints of the approach bridges were designed with special rhombic steel plates that allow also large transversal movements.

The A. Murray MacKay Bridge (MacKay Bridge) opened to traffic in 1970 and carries four lanes of traffic over the Halifax Harbour between Dartmouth and downtown Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. The Bridge's main cable has been opened for detailed visual inspections several times beginning in 2002. The Owner, Halifax Harbour Bridges, retained COWI North America to perform a strength evaluation in accordance with the National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Report 534– Guidelines for Inspection and Strength Evaluation of Suspension Bridge Parallel Wire Cables. As the MacKay Bridge main cable is composed of 61 parallel strands with helicoidal wires, the NCHRP 534 approach (intended for parallel wires) was modified to perform the strength evaluation for cables with helicoidal wires. Based on the analysis performed, it was determined that the main cable of the MacKay Bridge has adequate capacity at this time. Additional measures to protect the cable, mainly through dehumidification, could be considered to prevent further deterioration of the main cable and extend the service life of the cable and therefore the bridge.

The Seal Island Bridge is a steel through-arch truss bridge in Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Canada with a main span of 152 m. At over 60 years in service, the bridge is near the end of its design life and showing structural and operational difficulties such as a previously failed truss diagonal, cracked floorbeams, steel material property complexities, wind-induced vibrations, and restricted access due to narrow deck geometry. A series of bridge inspections were performed which included visual inspections, non-destructive testing, and material testing. The inspections revealed the presence of tack welds and associated cracking, steel corrosion, concrete deterioration, seized bearings, and vibrating bracing elements. Additionally, a structural health monitoring (SHM) program was implemented to determine the current bridge behaviour. To assess the structure, a finite element (FE) model was created and calibrated using the SHM data and the inspection findings. The FE modelling is the focus of this paper. During preliminary analysis, it was determined that the structure was sensitive to wind loading. Therefore, a detailed wind buffeting analysis was performed to refine the wind loading used in the analysis. Based on the results of the analysis and investigations, a rehabilitation plan is currently being developed to ensure that the bridge can remain in service for an additional 15 years. Additionally, a benefit-cost analysis is being performed to assess potential rehabilitation and replacement options for the Owner, the Province of Nova Scotia.

The Padma Multipurpose Bridge, commonly known as the Padma Bridge, is a two-level steel truss bridge with a four-lane highway on the upper level and a single-track railway on the lower level that has been under construction since 2014 and opened to traffic in June 2022. The upper and lower levels act compositely for live loading with a reinforced concrete deck slab. The bridge presented technical challenges to the client, consultants, and contractors, including river training work and deep foundations in an alluvial flood plain, where the rock formation lies several kilometers below the river bed. Major vessel traffic and ship impact were also challenges. The Padma is one of the world's mightiest rivers, being a distributary of the Ganges and the J amuna rivers and winding its way through Bangladesh to the Bay of Bengal. Engineers faced many challenges while designing the Padma Multipurpose Bridge, one of the biggest challenges being how to design a structure that could withstand the extreme conditions of the river. The structure consists of main bridge piers, which require "base grouting" and "skin grouting" to verify that they can withstand the required design loads. The largest hydraulic hammers in the world were used to install the steel tubular piles for the main bridge piers. When it is operational, the bridge is expected to boost Bangladesh's GDP by 1.2 percent. The Padma Bridge, which cost $3.87 billion to construct, is one of Bangladesh's largest construction projects ever and was funded by the Government of Bangladesh (GoB) . This paper describes the role of Independent Engineer (IE) in the design and construction of the newly constructed New Bridge over the Saint Lawrence (NBSL) River, also known as the New Champlain Bridge, in Montreal, Canada. The $3.2B Public-Private Partnership (P3) project includes a 2.1 mile long new bridge with a 790-foot cable-stayed main span. It also includes 19 bridge overpasses, and more than 3 miles of highway improvements. The new bridge has two three-lane corridors for vehicular traffic and a two-lane light rail transit system, as well as a multi-use path for pedestrians and cyclists. This new bridge has a 125-year design life and was open to highway traffic in both directions on July 1, 2019. The construction is ongoing on the bridge to install the light rail transit system which is expected to open in the spring of 2023. Various monitoring mechanisms have been set out to ensure that the Private Partner delivers the project in compliance with stipulated performance criteria. The Stantec and Ramboll team was selected by the Private Partner and the Government of Canada to be the Independent Engineer, whose mandate involves, examining, at various stages, the design documents, supervision plans and the management and quality control system provided by the Private Partner (PP), performing design reviews at various stages of the design, monitoring all work for the purpose of compliance with the Project Agreement (PA), and issuing certification of the completion of the work at Substantial and Final completion stages

European countries are characterized by an extensive infrastructural network, mainly built around the 1960s and 1970s. In that period prefabrication processes were starting to gain ground, and one of the most spread and studied typologies of bridges was constituted by reinforced or prestressed concrete decks. Those structures have gone through years of service, which caused the inevitable degradation of the materials. Moreover, the design and construction processes of that period have soon become obsolete, and the knowledge relative to the influence of detailing increased significantly. One particular element that has been commonly used has been the half-joint, which is easy to prefabricate and has a strategic impact. However, in recent years this solution is showing critical aptitudes in resisting structural degradation and material decay. Besides, Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) strategies are gaining attention since they are a very useful tool for gathering information on the current state of the structure and then for evaluating intervention plans to improve safety. Indeed, existing bridges, despite their working age, are still crucial to the development and sustainability of community life, and their decommissioning would be an act of critical impact on the communities (e.g., economy, logistics, sustainability). This contribution presents the design, the simulation, the implementation and the preliminary results of laboratory tests on half-joints in reinforced concrete beams that will be developed at the Politecnico di Torino in connection to CPM Samarate. They are designed to test and compare different monitoring techniques along with different steel reinforcement configurations.

In 1987, The World Commission on Environment and Development report on our Common Future formulated the definition of sustainable development and put forward the issue that caused the conflict between environment and development (Harris, 2000). It was proposed for the first time that the use of the concept of sustainable development, which is the most common today, (WCED, 1987), is the expression of "the ability to supply today’s needs and expectations without compromising the ability of future generations to supply their needs and expectations" (Akgül, 2010). Today, sustainability means that businesses should not only create economic value but also be involved in activities that facilitate and improve living conditions (Caymaz, etc., 2014). Within the globalizing economy, the health sector is one of the most important sectors that have taken human life as a focus. The survey examined whether the governance processes of private and public-sector hospitals in European Side of Istanbul are in line with sustainable policies, and if so, what kind of policies they take. In order to be able to conduct the examination, data were collected from the hospitals through the sustainability questionnaire and statistically analyzed in the obtained computer environment. The findings show that the sustainable environmental policy implementations of hospitals are not at the desired level. Sustainable social policies are also at a high level of implementation. The research showed that; it is necessary to increase the awareness level of hospital administrations on sustainability.

Various definitions and parameters have been determined by many researchers in the context of urban space quality. This study focuses on the necessity of the concepts of belonging and sense of place as indicators of urban space quality. The research aims to reveal how the sense of belonging developed by the connection of the user in the field with the place and place identity interaction affects the urban quality. In this context, Istanbul province Fatih district Küçük Mustafa Paşa district, which is one of the rare urban areas where the neighborhood culture and life still continue with its unique spatial characteristics, identity, and user profile, has been chosen as the study area. As a result of the study, it was determined that the users' sense of belonging and sense of place were developed and the importance of these concepts in the context of urban quality was emphasized.

The Lantau Link in Hong Kong forms part of the expressway linking Lantau Island to Tsing Yi, from which other roads lead to the urban areas of Kowloon and the rest of the New Territories. This is also part of the main route to the Hong Kong International Airport. The Lantau Link is 3.5km long and consists of Tsing Ma Bridge (suspension bridge), Kap Shui Mun Bridge (cable stayed bridge) and Ma Wan Viaduct (post-tensioned concrete viaduct). These structures carry traffic on two split deck levels. The upper deck carries 3 lanes of traffic in each direction. The lower deck carries a double-track railway line as well as two single-lane roads for emergency use or during strong wind when it is unsafe to drive on the upper deck. Due to continuing increase in road traffic on Lantau Link, it is proposed to increase the traffic carrying capacity by running traffic on the lower deck concurrently. The bridges were designed for 6 lanes of traffic and hence, an assessment to carry 8 lanes of traffic is required. To verify that opening the lower deck is possible without compromising structural safety, bridge specific live load study was carried out using WIM data and traffic data to derive the bridge specific assessment live load (BSALL) using Monte Carlo Simulation. WIM data was also used to derive fatigue load model (FLM) which represents the real truck weight and characteristics on the Lantau Link. This paper describes the derivation of BSALL and FLM and the results of the study.

This paper reflects on the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on religious life in Bulgaria, especially in the Orthodox Church, and on the sphere of academic teaching. The picture that emerges against the background of the moderate COVID-19 measures and the non-closure of churches is rather disturbing, given the aggressive attacks by non-believers against ecclesial practice. It testifies to widespread superstition and deep theological ignorance even among those who designate themselves as ‘Orthodox Christians’. The compromise of university education during the COVID-19 panic and the radical changes to the social way of thinking go—as a basis of the perplexity of the social mind—hand in hand with the destruction of the democratic world order by Russia’s war against Ukraine.

Review question / Objective: The purpose of this systematic review is to find the quality of life among family caregivers of children with disabilities in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Condition being studied: Quality of life is a broad-ranging concept affected in a complex way by the person’s physical health, psychological state, level of independence, social relationships, personal beliefs, and their relationship to salient features of their environment. A family caregiver is an unpaid individual who assists in caring for disabled children in activities of daily living, transfers, etc., and also aids in regular follow ups with doctors and rehabilitation professionals. These type of efforts affects the physical health, psychological state, and social relationships of caregivers, thereby reducing the quality of life of the family caregivers. Families in Saudi Arabia are family oriented, committed to family commitments, and respect family values; therefore, family members involve in caring for disabled children.

Behavioral interactions between conspecific animals can be influenced by relatedness and familiarity. To test how kinship and familiarity influenced social behavior in juvenile Eastern Box Turtles (Terrapene carolina), 16 captive-born individuals were reared under semi-natural conditions in four equally sized groups, where each group comprised pairs of siblings and non-siblings. Using separation distance between pairs of turtles in rearing enclosures as a measure of gregariousness, we found no evidence suggesting siblings more frequently interacted with one another compared to non-relatives over the first five months of life. Average pair separation distance decreased during this time but may have been due to turtles aggregating around resources like heat and moist retreat areas as colder temperatures approached. At eight months old, we again measured repeated separation distances between unique pair combinations and similarly found no support for associations being influenced by kinship. Agonistic interactions between individuals were never observed. Based on our results, group housing and rearing of juvenile box turtles did not appear to negatively impact their welfare. Unlike findings for other taxa, our results suggest strategically housing groups of juvenile T. carolina to maintain social stability may not be an important husbandry consideration when planning releases of captive-reared individuals for conservation purposes.

Putting migrants and asylum seekers into detention for administrative reasons is a common practice in Greece, despite this policy contravening human rights. Greek authorities are using detention and the new EU-funded closed compounds as a way to discourage people from seeking asylum in Europe. Detention, as outlined in Greek law, should only be used as a final resort and only then in specific instances. Detention carries with it not only a financial cost, but also a considerable moral cost. Detention without just cause violates basic human rights, such as freedom of movement, the right to health and the right to family life. Alternatives to detention exist and must be prioritized.
