Streszczenie:
Using a hybrid renewable energy source with an energy storage system, this paper proposed a novel multi-stage non-isolated three-port converter with a 5H inverter to feed a residential load varying from 50 Watts to 3500 Watts. The proposed three-port converter operates in grid-tied and standalone power modes. A novel demand-side management algorithm, which covers eight operation modes, is described. Additionally, a complete control system is discussed. The proposed control system controls the PV maximum power point and battery charging/discharging, and regulates the 400 V DC bus voltage, the load voltage in standalone mode, and the grid-tied injected current. The proposed converter and the control system are validated through simulation for all power modes. The simulation results reveal that the proposed system is viable for Building-Integrated PV Systems.

Streszczenie:
This study addresses the development of a computational tool for the sizing of photovoltaic systems interconnected to the grid (grid-tied) and isolated (off-grid) systems. The calculations for the sizing were obtained from the CRESESB Engineering Manual for Photovoltaic Systems, the GREENPO Photovoltaic Systems Technology, Design and Installation Manual, and the BLUESOL Solar System Introduction Digital Book. With knowledge of the latitude, longitude and altitude data of the site, the tool calculates the angle of the modules for better absorption of the photovoltaic radiation. For systems connected to the grid, it is also necessary to provide information on the consumption of the building to be serviced by the photovoltaic system. For isolated systems, in addition to information on the site, it is necessary to know the demand and consumption of the building. Decision-making criteria are based on economic analysis, according to indexes such as Net Present Value (NPV), Internal Rate of Return (IRR), and Discounted Payback. The screens developed for the sizing tool and examples of sizing of both photovoltaic systems are presented as results, through tables and graphs. The developed software is reliable, and all calculations have theoretical basis.

Streszczenie:
This article made a modest impact assessment of isolated solar home systems (SHSs) installed via recently ended five-yearflagship Ghana Energy Development and Access Project (GEDAP) on the livelihoods of rural households in the Upper WestRegion. A total of 250 solar users in both private households and rural clinics in 65 rural communities across 6 districts wereinterviewed. Lessons learned in the aspects of energy services provision, financial model, local energy preference and practicalsetbacks facing installed SHSs through GEDAP are discussed. For instance, in terms of energy preference, majority of rural solarusers (50%) preferred grid-tied electricity, although they were not connected to the grid yet as compared to 35% who preferredboth grid-tied and off-grid forms of electrification while 15% preferred off-grid solar technology. This then suggests that althoughoff-grid SHSs are a viable alternative energy generation option, they may not necessarily be a panacea for the energy povertysituation in rural Ghana due to setbacks. For off-grid solar electrification to achieve parity with conventional energy sources, acombination of increased system capacity, investment and political will is needed to make SHSs more competitive and deliversustained quality energy services for deprived rural communities where such place-based energy services are needed most forsustainable rural development.

Streszczenie:
The popularity of electric vehicles (EVs) is increasing day by day due to their environmentally friendly operation and high milage as compared to conventional fossil fuel vehicles. Almost all leading manufacturers are working on the development of EVs. The main problem associated with EVs is that charging many of these vehicles from the grid supply system imposes an extra burden on them, especially during peak hours, which results in high per-unit costs. As a solution, EV charging stations integrated with hybrid renewable energy resources (HREs) are being preferred, which utilize multi-energy systems to produce electricity. These charging stations can either be grid-tied or isolated. Isolated EV charging stations are operated without any interconnection to the main grid. These stations are also termed standalone or remote EV charging stations, and due to the absence of a grid supply, storage becomes compulsory for these systems. To attain maximum benefits from a storage system, it must be configured properly with the EV charging station. In this paper, different types of the latest energy storage systems (ESS) are discussed with a comprehensive review of configurations of these systems for multi-energy standalone EV charging stations. ESS in these charging stations is applied mainly in three different configurations, named single storage systems, multi-storage systems, and swappable storage systems. These configurations are discussed in detail with their pros and cons. Some important expectations from future energy storage systems are also highlighted.

Streszczenie:
The transport sector generates a considerable amount of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions worldwide, especially road transport, which accounts for 95% of the total GHGs. It is commonly known that Electric vehicles (EVs) can significantly reduce GHG emissions. However, with a fossil-fuel-based power generation system, EVs can produce more GHGs and therefore cannot be regarded as purely environmentally friendly. As a result, renewable energy sources (RES) such as photovoltaic (PV) can be integrated into the EV charging infrastructure to improve the sustainability of the transportation system. This paper reviews the state-of-the-art literature on power electronics converter systems, which interface with the utility grid, PV systems, and EVs. Comparisons are made in terms of their topologies, isolation, power and voltage ranges, efficiency, and bi-directional power capability for V2G operation. Specific attention is devoted to bidirectional isolated and non-isolated EV-interfaced converters in non-integrated architectures. A brief description of EV charger types, their power levels, and standards is provided. It is anticipated that the studies and comparisons in this paper would be advantageous as an all-in-one source of information for researchers seeking information related to EV charging infrastructures.

Streszczenie:
Grid-tied energy storage will play a key role in the reduction of carbon emissions. Systems based on Li-ion batteries could be good candidates for the task, especially those using lithium titanate negative electrodes. In this work, we will present the study of seven years of usage of a lithium titanate-based battery energy storage system on an isolated island grid. We will show that, even after seven years, the modules’ capacity loss is below 10% and that overall the battery is still performing within specifications. From our results, we established a forecast based on the internal degradation mechanisms of the hottest and coldest modules to show that the battery full lifetime on the grid should easily exceed 15 years. We also identified some inaccuracies in the online capacity estimation methodology which complicates the monitoring of the system.

Streszczenie:
The upcoming adoption of low-voltage-ride-through requirements in low-voltage distribution systems is expected to raise significant challenges in the operation of grid-tied inverters. Typically, these inverters interconnect photovoltaic units, which are the predominant distributed energy resource in low-voltage distribution networks, under an umbrella of standards and protection schemes. As such, a challenging issue that should be considered in low-voltage distribution network applications, regards the coordination between the line protection scheme (typically consisting of a non-settable fuse) and the low-voltage-ride-through operation of photovoltaic generators. During a fault, the fuse protecting a low-voltage feeder may melt, letting the generator to continue its ride-through operation. Considering that the efficacy/speed of the anti-islanding detection is affected by ride-through requirements, this situation can lead to protracted energization of the isolated feeder after fuse melting (unintentional islanding). To address this issue, this paper proposes a fault-current-limitation based solution, which does not require any modification in the existing protection scheme. The operation principles, design, and implementation of this solution are presented, while, its effectiveness is supported by extensive simulations in a test-case low-voltage distribution system. A discussion on the presented results concludes the paper.

Streszczenie:
Transformerless inverters are widely used in different photovoltaic nonisolated ac module applications, mainly in grid-tied photovoltaic (PV) generation systems, due to the benefits of achieving high efficiency over a wide load range, and low cost. Various transformerless inverter topologies have been proposed to meet the safety requirement of low ground leakage currents, such as specified in the VDE-4105 standard and low-output ac-current distortion. Topology modifications of transformerless full bridge inverters are designed to balance and maintain a constant common mode output voltage, thereby eliminating or reducing leakage currents. This article reviews and compares the different methods for limiting leakage currents in known topologies of the full-bridge transformerless inverters, such as: H4, H5, H6, HERIC, and their improvements. The main topologies and strategies used to reduce the leakage current in transformerless schemes are summarized, highlighting advantages and disadvantages and establishing points of comparison with similar topologies. To compare the properties of different medium to high power inverters, PV inverter topologies were implemented using IGBTs and tested with the same components, same simulation parameters in PSPICE to evaluate their performance in terms of energy efficiency and leakage current characteristics. The detailed power stage operating principles, extended PWM modulator, and integrated universal gate driver with galvanic isolation in the transmission path of control signal for all IGBTs of the inverter, as well isolated and floating bias power supply for gate drivers are described.
