Qualcomm Wireless Business Solutions (QWBS) provides communication equipment and services used to track trucking fleets and other capital assets via satellite. Order fulfillment and inventory management practices in QWBS were non-uniform and manually intensive. Buyers used their own intuition and rules-of-thumb to decide how many parts to order and how many parts should be held in stock to buffer against unexpected demand fluctuations. Non-uniform, manual inventory management practices resulted in higher inventory levels, lower customer service, and higher operational costs than can be achieved with uniform, formal management practices. This thesis describes the design and implementation of an automated inventory management system that optimizes inventory levels and alleviates manual effort. Benchmarking was used to show how a similar firm used inventory management techniques to improve efficiency and reduce costs. Quantitative analysis was used to develop an inventory management simulator that allowed alternative management strategies to be tested before implementing changes to the real system. Simulation results showed that QWBS inventories for fiscal year 2001 (FY01) could have been reduced by 40% had an automated inventory management policy been in place. In addition, automation would have reduced the manual effort of buyers by about 32%. Results from the simulator motivated the formation of the Automated Inventory Manager (AIM) project team. AIM is designed to automate order fulfillment and inventory management tasks and allow procurement's human resources to be redirected from low level transaction processing tasks to more value-added tasks. AIM is expected to liberate $700K in working capital and save approximately $240K per year in ongoing inventory and labor cost reductions, representing a 1-year ROI of 200%. However, AIM represents only the first step in a recommended cost reduction program to streamline the fulfillment of customer orders and reduce organizational redundancies.

In this study, we analyze the benefits of VMI in a supply chain consisting of a single retailer and a single capacitated supplier under stochastic demand. We propose a VMI setting and compare the vendor managed system with the traditional system to quantify the benefits of VMI. In our proposed VMI system, the retailer shares the inventory level information with the supplier, which is not available in traditional system
and the supplier is responsible to keep the retailer&rsquo
s inventory level between the specified minimum and maximum values, called (z,Z) levels, set by a contract. We examine the benefits of such a VMI system for each member and for the overall chain
and analyze the effects of system parameters on these benefits. The performance of VMI in coordinating the overall chain is examined under different system parameters.

The development of inventory studies for Small Hydropower Plants is a costly and time consuming activity. The motivation of this dissertation is to, quickly and economically, verify the true viability of these projects. A computational model was created to automate inventory studies, identifying the hydroelectric generation potential and the projects’ installation sites. After the identification of the potential, the definition of project siting and project sizing is studied. In other words, the model determines the most adequate sites to build dams among several candidate locations and, for each selected case, the plant design (gross head, installed capacity, reservoir size and others). This potential is developed through the maximization of total net benefit, and includes environmental constraints that can be adapted to different regulations. Through this automation, the risks for entrepreneurs investing a significant amount of money in unpromising river basins are expected to reduce.

This thesis documents a study carried out at the Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research (NIBR) in Cambridge, MA. The study focused on the development of inventory management processes for laboratory consumables. The pharmaceutical R&D process is characterized by a dynamic project portfolio, which results in a great diversity of stock-keeping-units, low repeat order rates and high variability in consumption rates. These factors create significant challenges for the design of inventory management processes. We first present an assessment and diagnosis of the current state of inventory management at NIBR, using data gathered from various NIBR sites as well as other companies. We discuss underlying drivers that influence current behavior, and identify opportunities for improvement. We then develop alternative models for inventory management and compare these models along several dimensions such as stock room location & control, inventory ownership and replenishment options. We recommend the use of consolidated department level stock rooms as the most suitable option for NIBR. Detailed implementation plans are then developed and validated through a case study. We present key findings and recommendations for implementation, and discuss opportunities for future projects.

The production of aerospace grade titanium alloys is concentrated in a relatively small number of producers. The market for these materials has always been cyclical in nature. During periods of high demand, metal producers claim to operate near full capacity utilization. During periods of reduced demand, metal producers struggle to remain profitable. Additionally, the manufacturing processes for aerospace grade titanium alloys are capital intensive and require long lead-times in order to bring new capacity online. The combination of these factors often results in an inflexible titanium alloy raw material supply chain for Pratt & Whitney. At the same time, Pratt & Whitney experiences a variety of rare but disruptive events within the supply chain that affect their raw material requirements. Examples of these disruptive events include customer drop-in orders, manufacturing complications resulting in scrapped material, and planning deficiencies. In order to protect engine and spare part customers from delayed deliveries due to long lead-time raw materials, Pratt & Whitney holds a strategic inventory of various titanium alloy raw material.
(cont.) This thesis presents a mathematical model utilizing a Compound Poisson Process that can be used to optimize the amount of strategic titanium alloy raw material held by Pratt & Whitney. The associated mathematical algorithms were programmed into Microsoft Excel creating the Strategic Raw Material Inventory Calculator. Historical data was then collected and used with this unique tool to calculate service levels at current inventory levels as well as optimized inventory levels under various scenarios.

In modern global supply chains, goods travel stochastically from suppliers to their final destinations through several intermediate installations such as ports and distribution facilities. In such an environment, the supply chain must be agile to respond quickly to demand spikes. One way to achieve this objective is by expediting outstanding orders from the intermediate installations through premium delivery. In this research, we study the optimal expediting and regular ordering policies of a serial supply chain with a radio frequency identification deployment at each installation. Radio frequency identification technology allows capturing the state of the system, i.e., the time and location of goods, at any point in time, and thus enables to expedite outstanding orders directly to the destination, which faces stochastic demand. We identify systems, called sequential, that yield simple and tractable optimal policies. For sequential systems, outstanding orders including expediting do not cross in time. For such systems, we find that the optimal policies of expediting and regular ordering are the base stock type policies. The directional sensitivity of the base stock levels with respect to expediting costs is also obtained. We provide an important managerial insight on the radio frequency identification technology: we need to actively use the additional information from the radio frequency identification technology through new business processes such as expediting to unveil more benefits from the supply chain. On the other hand, orders may cross in time for systems that are not sequential, thus in such a case optimal policies are hard to obtain. We propose a heuristic for such systems and discuss its performance and limitation.
(cont.) Lastly, as an extension to the model, we study the optimal policies of expediting and regular ordering when there is an expiry date on outstanding orders. The optimal expediting policy identifies a number of base stock levels depending on the age of the orders, but the structure of the optimal policy remains simple for sequential systems.

It is critically important for inventory-carrying facilities to provide high availability of products at the minimal operating cost. To achieve this objective, many companies have automated their inventory operations and rely on the information system in critical decision makings. However, if the information is inaccurate, it may lead to high out-of-stocks and/or excess inventory. This thesis examines what the primary causes of the inaccuracy are, how and to what extent they degrade the inventory system performance, and what can be done to compensate for the inaccuracy. Analytical and simulation modelling demonstrate that the inventory system performance is highly sensitive to the inaccuracy caused by stock loss, which is the disappearance of items (such as due to theft) not detected by the information system. That is, even a small level of stock loss accumulated over time can lead to inventory inaccuracy that disrupts the replenishment process and creates severe out-of-stocks. In fact, revenue losses due to out-of-stocks can far outweigh the property losses due to the disappearing items.
(cont.) One way to deal with the inaccuracy problem is the use of RFID-based automatic product identification technology under development at the Auto-ID Center, which can provide the real-time and accurate information regarding the location and quantity of objects in supply chain. It is found that even when this technology provides imperfect measurement of the stock quantity, dramatic performance improvement can be achieved using an inventory control scheme based on dynamic programming. Various other methods of compensating for the inventory inaccuracy are presented and evaluated. Analysis of each method reveals that the inventory inaccuracy problem can be effectively treated even without automatic identification technology in some situations. However, each method has weaknesses.

The management of raw material at Blue Brick in Singapore is costly as the company is forced to pay for external storage when the ports' time allowance runs out. A new ordering policy of (Q, R) continuous review model with forecast demand is developed to reduce inventory in the external warehouse. The policy parameters of four most commonly used paperboards are determined and simulations based on historical demand data are run to evaluate the policy. A simulation with Crystal Ball is also run to prove the efficacy of the (Q, R) method. Both the theoretical and simulation results suggest that the new ordering policy satisfies the stock-out requirement and ports' inventory day requirement. Thus Blue Brick can eliminate the four common paperboards' inventory in the external warehouse. Moreover if the forecast errors of other paperboards have the same levels as the ones of the four common paperboards, Blue Brick could eliminate all the inventories in the external warehouse.

Modern retail has been significantly affected by the surge in online platforms and product options. Customers have comfortably settled into an omni-channel model, in which they buy different products through different channels. While customers expect a seamless process in getting the products they are looking for, they are also more influenced by the selection offered when unsure of what to buy. For retailers, the transition to omnichannel means more complex problems of inventory positioning and demand fulfillment, but also an opportunity to influence their customers through the assortments they offer, especially online. In this thesis, we study two main challenges related to inventory positioning in omni-channel and provide new models and algorithms. First, we study the problem of choice modeling and assortment optimization. Choice models aim to capture customer preferences across products and have been extensively studied.
Whereas numerous models have been proposed, few are tractable, and many have been shown to be limited in capturing customer preferences, due to their underlying assumptions on consumer behavior. In the first part of this thesis, we introduce a new class of models, which we call synergistic, and show both theoretically and empirically, that these models dominate all existing ones in capturing consumer preferences. We show the associated optimization problems for the synergistic models are NP-hard, but provide IP-based algorithms, which are reasonably tractable in practice. Finally, we show that these models can be represented as ReLU activated neural networks. Therefore, state of the art methods in the neural networks field can be leveraged to efficiently estimate these models and optimize over them, to inform assortment optimization decisions.
In the second part of the thesis, we focus on inventory planning for a physical retailer, considering the complex dynamics in the store involving the backroom, and the need to minimize its use. The question is motivated by our collaborator, a large US retail chain, striving to leverage their store assets as shipping hubs. We present a case study of working with real data to understand the complexities of this question and identify steps a retailer can take to become leaner.

Over the past few years, the Intel Fab-17 facility has aggressively pursued lean methodology to reduce the manufacturing costs associated with its aging 200mm diameter wafer process. One area ripe with improvement opportunities is the processes supplying and managing Test Wafers, which are non-production wafers used to verify production tools and operations. With four test wafer types, hundreds of different sequences of operations (defined as routes), and varying consumption trends, thousands of decisions must be made daily to ensure Test Wafers are available on time and with the proper base characteristics. To further illustrate the magnitude and importance of Test Wafer systems, roughly the same number of Test Wafers are introduced each time period into the fab as production wafers. Through direct observation and process mapping techniques, I identified two system level projects, each containing enormous cost and performance improvements to the entire facility. Project One: Reallocating excess inventory In analyzing the Test Wafer inventory quantity and consumption rates in primary stockroom, I noticed that certain routes had excess inventory while others were deficient, thus leading to significantly more expensive Test Wafers types to be used instead. In order to maximize realized cost savings, I developed a linear optimization program which distributed excess Test Wafer inventory to areas of need. Different re-allocation costs, initial material specifications, and forecasted consumption needs constrained the quantity and location for this redistribution.
(cont.) Per the optimization program's recommendations, I led a team to re-allocate the largest excess Test Wafer inventory area to twelve different locations. The savings for this project correspond to over a year's worth of test wafer inventory now available for these routes and banks. Project Two: Determining supply decisions from a Days of Inventory (DOI) metric The previous process for supplying Test Wafers into the fab was complicated, lacked standardization, required significant human intervention, and led to tool performance impacts despite high operating costs. To address these issues, I designed, developed, and implemented a program which prioritized and calculated thousands of test wafer decisions based upon a Days of Inventory (DOI) metric. By prioritizing actions based on the time until stock out, cost-effective decisions were made while ensuring Test Wafers are available at a tool when needed. The program forecasted short term consumption using an Exponentially Weighted Moving Average (EMWA) and pulled real-time inventory and available Test Wafer material to support the calculations and decision logic. After a successful fab-wide pilot, the "DOI Scheduler" program has now replaced the previous test wafer supply process. As a result, internal fab test wafer inventory will decrease by approximately 35% (as of March 2009, inventory has dropped by 15% and continues downward), Test Wafer availability will improve by approximately 75%, and 4 to 5 hrs a week of labor resources have been saved.
(cont.) Equally important, the prior non-standard process is now standardized, enabling future Test Wafer improvement projects and allowing root cause analysis on previously unsolvable problems.

Companies usually face thousands of inventory items with various properties. Traditional inventory management strategies developed for single item are less effective. It has been shown that multi-item inventory control methods perform better when dealing with multiple items. In addition, inventory classification can also be applied for more efficient management in this situation. However, it is seldom studied how to combine inventory classification and multi-item inventory control methods on inventory management and how the combination performs. This research considers the application of the combination of inventory classification and multi-item inventory control methods. Items are first classified into groups. Multi-item inventory control methods are then applied on each group. Four classification techniques and two multi-item inventory control methods are considered. Numerical experiment is conducted and the performances and their differences based on related costs are compared and discussed. The results show the combination of the two techniques provides more effective management.

ABSTRACT------Exposure to adverse situations, potentially induces a maladaptative stress reaction, and can be constituted as a precursor of positive psychological changes at personal, relational and spiritual domains. These positive changes as a result from coping with trauma are known as "posttraumatic growth". This study means to provide empirical evidence, through the study of the psychometric characteristics of the instruments, Posttraumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI); Core Beliefs Inventory (CBI); Event Related Rumination Inventory (ERRI) and Distress Disclosure Index (DDI). These instruments assess the positive changes as a result of struggle with higly challenging adverse events (PTGI); challenge of core beliefs (CBI); the style of rumination (ERRI) and emotional disclosure (DDI). The results obtained from the analysis of the factor structure, the internal consistency indices and the construct validity were collected from a sample of 510 participants collected from normative Portuguese population. The results indicate that the four instruments analyzed in this study, have good levels of sensitivity, reliability, validity, and adjustment. The analysis of internal consistency using Cronbach's alpha coefficient, showed good internal consistency for the total scale, as well as its dimensions, in all instruments under study. The data shows that the use of these instruments is recommended both in the clinical setting and research.

Inventory management is an important part of enterprise management, it plays a crucial role in the everlasting operation and development of an enterprise. Enterprise with excellent inventory management, can reducing costs of inventory to make fund using more flexible. Delivery on schedule to improve the satisfaction of customers makes enterprise more competitive Conversely, an enterprise with misgovern of inventory, in addition to increasing costs of inventory to restricted fund using, but also facing the difficulties to survive or not because of running off customers. In this thesis we use a case study to exploring the improvement of inventory management in Company I. Due to misgovern of inventory, Company I has problem with quantity and booking discrepancy, and cause abnormal shrinkage. Through data collection, statistics and analysis to identify the main abnormality factor, and proposing improvement plan to reduce inventory shrinkage and quantity and booking discrepancy. According to the achievement of improvement plan, Company I implementing material check-in procedure in 2013, all materials moved back to company I ‘s warehouse and control directly, importing two new mechanisms: ABC classification and new stocktaking plan, and more co-ordination between the concerned units, all concerned staffs put strategies into practice, Company I did not have any inventory abnormal in late 2014 stocktaking, verified as valid improve.
