Pełny tekst źródłaCurrently, the lifetime of MEMS switches is limited by the degradation of the electrical contact materials. The first part of this thesis deals with the analysis of the failure modes of a MEMS switch developed by Schneider Electric in collaboration with the CEA-Leti. The second part presents the development of a setup dedicated to evaluate the endurance of new contact materials. The third part focuses on the study of the electric phenomena happening when contacts are separated from only a few tens of nanometers. Thanks to an atomic force microscope, Fowler-Nordheim electronic emission has been highlighted and leads to the da mage of the contact materials. Finally, the results of this work are used to establish a conception guidebook for highly reliable microswitches, which the next generation of devices will benefit from

Pełny tekst źródłaResearch on electrical contact characterization for microelectromechanical system (MEMS) switches has been driven by the necessity to reach a high-reliability level for micro-switch applications. One of the main failure observed when aging devices with gold contacts is the increase of the electrical contact resistance. It is related to degradations of the surface topography caused by heating, adhesion forces, etc. In this paper we investigate the performance of gold and an alternative material, ruthenium, using a methodology dedicated to MEMS contacts: a nanoindenter is used to actuate mechanically the structure, providing an accurate control of the force applied and of the resulting displacement. The electrical resistance is measured by cross rods technique "four wires" to avoid any measurement of the wire access resistances. A high resolution source meter with programmed voltage compliance and micro voltmeter is used. The test vehicles are surface micromachined on silicon substrate. Dedicated tests and modelling are presented with 5 microm² square bumps under mechanical load (until 250microN) and electrical current (1mA-100mA). Analyses of contact force dependence, temperature dependence, adhesion forces, evolution of the contact area, creep behavior and topological modifications are discussed. Regarding the results, better understanding of micro-contact behavior related to the impact of current at low- to medium-power levels is obtained. Contact heating until the softening temperature is found to be the main factor leading to shift of mechanical properties of contact materials and topological modifications. Finally an enhanced stability of the bimetallic contact was demonstrated considering sensitivity to power increase

Pełny tekst źródłaEnergy harvesting is the process that involves converting otherwise unused energy present in our environment into usable electrical energy that can be used to power an electronic system. Electrostatic kinetic energy harvesters (eKEHs) utilize vastly present kinetic energy that originates either from an object in motion or vibrations and converts it into electrical energy. The employed principle is based on a polarized variable electrostatic capacitor. With an addition of a triboelectric layer between its plates and utilizing the triboelectrification effect, an eKEH is transformed into a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG). This type of transducer accumulates charges by contact in the triboelectric layer which thus becomes an electret whose generated semi-permanent electric field allows a variation of the distribution of the electric charges in the electrodes by electrostatic induction.Altering the architecture of a TENG by adding the third electrode, a single-capacitive transducer is converted into a double-capacitive TENG. Doubling the conversion element in a transducer is expected to increase the amount of converted energy. Chosen electronics circuit to condition obtained signal from the generator is Bennet’s charge doubler. An increase without saturation point at the output of this circuit is the unique characteristic of this unstable charge pump. It reflects through an exponential increase of output voltage and a number of charges accumulated in the storage capacitor which increase (in theory) in an infinite way. This means that the surface of the charge-voltage cycle at the terminals of the TENG, and thus the converted energy of the mechanical domain, increases at each iteration of the mechanical cycle of the transducer. The scope of this thesis encompasses the simulation, analytical and experimental research of Bennet’s charge doubler with two asymmetric variable capacitors each containing a triboelectric layer. It is postulated that the performance of the "double TENG" - "double Bennet" system is superior to the classic Bennet’s double. The results of analytical and simulation analysis have shown that the expected behavior of this circuit aligns with hypothesized performance results. The system has been tested experimentally. It is concluded that the results of the constructed system are relevant when compared with the reported performance of the classic "single-capacitive TENG" - "Bennet’s doubler" system. When compared with classic Bennet’s doubler, double Bennet reaches the same voltage levels in less time. That is due to the advantage of double capacitive TENG which increases the number of accumulated charges per mechanical cycle. In analytical analysis, it was found that the two TENG capacitors are codependent and that in operation they affect one another. The output signal of double Bennet is characterized by high voltages ranging from a few hundreds of volts to a few kilovolts (kV). To reduce the rectified output voltage to a level compatible with a commercial application, a Buck DC-DC converter is implemented. This requires a switch. This thesis proposes and studies the use of a high-voltage MEMS micro-plasma switch whose actuation voltages is defined by Paschen’s law. Within the scope of this thesis, the theoretical and experimental studies of this law at the micrometer scale propose optimal actuation voltages for better management of the converted energy

Pełny tekst źródłaThis work aims at finding a fast and low-cost test technique for RF MEMS switches embedded in SiP (System-in-Package). The complexity of RF SiP requires a test strategy leading to a design-for-test (DFT) solution that helps to overcome the necessity of sophisticated test equipment, as well as the access difficulties to measure embedded points. The proposed approach uses the principle of alternate test that replaces conventional specification-based testing procedures. The basic idea is to extract the high frequency characteristics of the switch from the signal envelope of the response. Features such as rise-time, fall-time, ON and OFF peak amplitude can be extracted from this low frequency signal. These features are then used in a regression process to predict RF conventional specifications like S-parameters. A test set-up was configured and used to evaluate some samples of a commercial switch. Experimental measures are executed with an industry-developed evaluation board and a developer's kit. Low frequency measures like ON and OFF transition times and the ratio between peak amplitude of RF input and output signals are used as regressors. These low frequency characteristics provide important data for the multivariate regression algorithm that builds a nonlinear mapping between the low frequency switch features and the RF performances. Thus, conventional performances, such as S-parameters, are predicted from these measurements by the nonlinear regression. The results exhibited a good correlation between low frequency and RF measurements. The experimental validation has only been performed for a reduced population sample. Simulation results have also been used to evaluate this correlation

Pełny tekst źródłaThe work of this PhD thesis concerns the conception and the fabrication of a Safe Arm and Fire (SAF) fuze. The innovation of this work, in addition to the fact that it integrates all the traditional fuze elements (detonator, mechanical barrier, actuator and safety) in silicon technology, is set at two levels: - It proposes to integrate a pyrotechnical actuator which requires a few of electrical energy to move a mechanical screen being used to block the pyrotechnical chain just before the armament. No other actuation type could fulfill this function with the energy constraints imposed by the silicon integration. - It integrates, around the main function, one-shot switches (ON-OFF and OFF-ON) completely compatible with the detonator because they are based on the same technological brick (a resistive heater on a SiO2/SiNx membrane) and which ensure the electric safeties. The detonator and the pyrotechnical actuator require 635mW to initiate the explosive placed directly in contact with the resistive heater. Initiation is done in 36ms. The various security functions are provided by one-shot switches that we developed: - The ON-OFF microswitch requires 500mW during 1,5s to divide a track which passes on the resistive heater. - The OFF-ON microswitch, by carrying out a locally micro-soldering between two insulated electrical tracks, requires a minimum power of 160mW to commute the switch in 443ms. Thanks to these innovations, we fabricated a safe micro fuze demonstrator, smaller than 1cm3 without the supply, and we experimentally validated the device good functioning
