Abstract This article presents the IPCE-IPAC corpus, an ongoing project, which has been collected in France, Italy, Spain and China since 2014. The data is collected to investigate the acquisition of segmental and suprasegmental phenomena by L2 learners of English, with a focus on phonemes. The article discusses the methods for the compilation of this original spoken learner corpus, designed to study L2 “interphonology” (Detey, Racine, Kawaguchi, & Zay, 2016), or interlanguage phonology.

This study aimed at investigating listening comprehension of sandhi forms (assimilation, linking and contraction.) in Brazilian Portuguese/English Interphonology. Fifty-two Brazilian learners of English, aged 15 to 50 years old at a minimum B1 level of English proficiency, answered two listening tasks, one with and another without sandhi forms, and filled up a questionnaire about the frequency they watched movies in English, with and without subtitles, and listened to songs in English paying attention to their lyrics. The data collected were quantitatively and qualitatively analyzed. Results indicated that sandhi forms tend to cause listening comprehension difficulties for the Brazilian learners of English who participated in the study, especially when there were content words involved and the sandhi form had a minimal pair. Even though participants used to watch movies and series in English with subtitles, both in English and in Portuguese, a better performance was observed among those who consumed contents without them.

Streszczenie:
Syllable structure in interphonology has consistently demarcated the initial phases of phonological transfer, as well as the basis for a putative universal preference for the open syllable. The manner in which syllable structure is continually reorganized during the processes of acquisition has, however, not attracted much attention. This article addresses two phenomena in the acquisition of second language syllable structure - a preference for open syllables, as manifest in paragoge, and a developmental process of final segment apocopation that applies to first language lexical items appearing under the domain of the second language intonational envelope. The data for the analyses come from spontaneous utterances produced by Japanese students of English as a foreign language. Results of two ten-factor variable-rule analyses suggest that paragogic epenthesis is conditioned by a syllable structure constraint based on the L1, and that variation in the type of segment epenthesized is governed by natural phonological constraints. Analyses of the apocope dataset indicate that acquisition of L2 stress patterns leads to a restructuring of the syllable structure constraint leading to suppression of open syllables in the L2.

Streszczenie:
This review article evaluates the intersection of the content of two recent anthologies in second language (L2) phonology. One of the books lays out both the methodological context and theoretical underpinnings of the field, whereas the other volume reports 11 empirical studies on the L2 acquisition of several aspects of pronunciation by adult learners of English whose native language is either Spanish or Brazilian Portuguese. The criteria applied for the evaluation lead to the conclusion that, for the most part, the studies are successful in presenting an interesting array of second-language pronunciation patterns, and that such an intersection of domains is a fruitful way to advance the field of interphonology.

Streszczenie:
The purpose of this paper is to argue that the facts of interphonology support a division of processes relating sound alternations into two distinct types: those that cannot cause negative transfer and those that can and often do. This distinction has been captured in two ways in recent phonological theory: (i) by proposing an autonomous morphophonology {cf. Hooper 1976) and (ii) by positing levels and strata (cf. Mohanan 1982 and Kiparsky 1982). Both internal and external evidence, such as the phonological behaviour of nonsense words {cf. Gussmann 1980) and the necessity of doing at least some inflection in the lexicon (cf. Lieber 1981), argues against the former model. The latter model succeeds in avoiding autonomous morphophonology, but only at the cost of postulating levels and strata, constructs for which interpho-nology offers no support. The facts of negative transfer or interference, it seems to us, are best accounted for by a theory that accounts for non-global "morphophonology" directly in the morphological component of the grammar (cf. Ford and Singh 1984 and Singh à paraître).

Streszczenie:
The present study aimed at investigating effects of perceptual training in the production of word-initial /s/-clusters in Brazilian Portuguese/English interphonology. The hypotheses proposed that there would be improvement in production after training and that such improvement would also be found in an eight-month follow-up test and in a twelve-year follow-up test. Also, it was hypothesized that the production of /s/+sonorants would remain more problematic than the production of /s/+stops after training. Twenty-three Brazilians who spoke English as a foreign language at a minimum B1 level of proficiency participated in the study. Eight of them were assigned to a control group. The fifteen remaining participants took a test consisting of reading tasks and an interview before and after an identification perceptual training following a high variability approach. Eight months later, eight participants from the experimental group took a follow-up test with the same tasks from pre- and posttests. Twelve years later one participant took another follow-up test. Results indicated that production of word-initial /s/-clusters improved significantly right after training and that the improvement was also found in both eight-month and twelve-year follow-up tests even for clusters which had not been trained. /s/+sonorants remained more problematic than /s/+stops and voicing was found to be more persistent than other mispronunciations of word-initial /s/-clusters. The transfer of improvement from perception to production may indicate that there is a common mental representation underlying both domains and that changes in production performance may reflect changes in mental representation of non-native targets.

Abstract In this article, we describe the main methodological steps taken in the InterPhonologie du Français Contemporain (IPFC) research project to build an international corpus of spoken French as a Foreign Language for research and educational purposes. We offer a brief illustration of our approach with a four-session longitudinal study of 12 beginner Japanese learners of French over two years, especially /b/ and /v/ consonants produced in two tasks (repetition and reading of an identical wordlist). Our results illustrate how our perception-based first-screening coding approach provides us with rich information about the developmental profile of the learners, taking into account the task (repetition vs reading), the position in the word (initial, medial, final), the perceptual phonetic characteristics, and ultimately the left and right phonological context of the structure under scrutiny. This work is the first step in an iterative approach to further test experimentally subsets of the non-target-like productions from an acoustic-perceptual point of view.
