The Internet of Things (IoT) is poised to revolutionise the way we live and communicate, and the manner in which we engage with our social and natural world. In the IoT, objects such as household items, vending machines and cars have the ability to sense and share data with other things, via wireless, Bluetooth, or Radio Frequency IDentification (RFID) technology. "Smart things" have the capability to control their performance, as well as our experiences and decisions. In this exploratory paper, we overview recent developments in the IoT technology, and their relevance for criminology. Our aim is to partially fill the gap in the literature, by flagging emerging issues criminologists and social scientists ought to engage with in the future. The focus is exclusively on the IoT while other advances, such as facial recognition technology, are only lightly touched upon. This paper, thus, serves as a starting point in the conversation, as we invite scholars to join us in forecasting-if not preventing-the unwanted consequences of the "future Internet".

This paper investigates how the Internet has lost its power as a tool for political participation in South Korea, one of the world's most wired countries. Its 2002 presidential election was praised as one of the most spectacular examples of social change caused by the Internet. The following election in 2007, however, marked the total inability of the Internet to mobilize voters. How did the Internet, which is often claimed to have a democratizing potential, lose its power so quickly? By comparing the two elections, this paper shows why the effects of the Internet cannot be generalized. Although many scholars believe that cyberspace is anonymous and difficult to regulate, the Korean Internet is drastically different. This paper explores how the Internet evolves into many “internets” under the influence of a country's unique sociocultural factors.

IoT devices can be sensors or actuators. This survey paper aims to gather and summarize some of the latest library resources on the Internet of Things (IoT) devices. From the results of a paper survey, IoT devices can be grouped into twelve categories, namely: temperature, pressure, flow, level, imaging, noise, air pollution, proximity and displacement, infrared, humidity and humidity, speed, gas and chemicals.

AbstractUnlike their television counterparts, website fund-raising advertisements designed by international aid agencies do not have to be compressed into short grabs and bites. This means that website technology might be used to convey relatively abstract, situational attributions for poverty, which are known to increase charitable donations. Seventy undergraduates from Australia's Northern Territory University viewed a simulated aid agency website containing varying degrees of textual and visual information about these situational causes of poverty; completed the situational attributions-focused Causes of Third World Poverty Questionnaire (CTWPQ); and reported their intentions to donate money to the simulated aid organisation's poverty relief projects. Consistent with attribution theory, both situational attributions made about poverty and charitable donation intentions were optimised when the website contained an optimal amount of (textual and visual) information on the situational causes of poverty. These preliminary findings suggest how Internet technology can be applied to raise dollar donations, as well as increasing tolerance within diverse regions like the South Pacific.

This essay is the honorary “Steve Jones Internet Research Lecture” for 2015, presented at the International Communication Association meetings in San Juan, Puerto Rico on 23 May 2015. Internet technology is understood in social terms not just as tools. As a social/cultural phenomenon, the new media’s core ethical norm arguably becomes social justice. The global dynamics of the Internet system requires an international definition of justice as intrinsic worthiness, rather than the standard idea of justice as right-order legality determined by nation-state conventions. This understanding of justice is defended against relativism which claims that values are culture specific.

The main purpose of this study is to determine the views of preservice teachers of Information Technologies and investigate the effect of information pollution on internet use. Semi-structured interview and questionnaire methods were used in this mixed methods study. 12 preservice teachers participated in the interview part and 67 4th, 3rd and 2nd course students participated in the questionnaire on voluntary basis, from Computer Education and Instructional Technologies Department. As a result of the analysis of the data obtained, it was found out that the preservice teachers consider information pollution unnecessary, incorrect and out-of-date information found disorganized in an environment; the preservice teachers regard the most important factor causing information pollution on the internet is the fact that everybody can write about anything. Also preservice teachers denoted that the most important effect of internet information pollution is waste of time. Abstract In popular science and technology writing, “boosterism” is prominent. Writers overwhelmingly describe science and technology in enthusiastic terms, thereby promoting the deficit or Public Appreciation of Science and Technology model (PAST). A crucial aspect of the PAST model is its pro-innovation bias: writers enroll chaperones in the texts, such as spokespersons, users, celebrities, witnesses, experts, and authorities, to support their claims. Both “boosterism” and pro-innovation bias constrain the public’s critical understanding of science and technology. This study includes a detailed exploration of pro-innovation bias in the popularization of the Internet in the Norwegian press and how journalists use chaperones to support their claims. The author demonstrates that, in popularizing the Internet, pro-innovation bias manifests several other biases, such as individual-praise, pro-technology, individual-blame, technology-blame, and source biases.

This study tested the Human Resource Management System model in 2612 small and medium scale companies in Malaysia by selecting the sample by random sampling method using an online interview system. We examine four aspects of management, namely income, human capital investment, technology investment, investment in operational aids using the quantitative descriptive method of the ordinary least square model. We find that there is a positive relationship between investment in human capital, technology and operational aids and income.

Summary Objective: To develop a Web-based Health Risk Appraisal (HRA) system as a tool for health education based on personal health examination data. Methods: A Japanese health examination database was analyzed to develop models for HRA, which were designed to predict each of ten laboratory values in a year with and without lifestyle modifications. The HRA models were embedded into a server. Results: The Web-based HRA system has been introduced into a Japanese health care association having 37 branch centers. Following a health examination, an individual health education program using the Web-based HRA system is provided to a given client at each branch center or at a client’s office. A measured laboratory value and corresponding predicted laboratory values in a year with and without lifestyle modifications are displayed on the screen in forms of both numerical values and graphs. A trained nurse or another health care provider operates the system and explains the HRA result. Conclusion: The Web-based HRA system will be a practical tool for individual health education following health examination.
