Streszczenie:
This paper outlines and analyzes milestones in the history of the Internet. As technology advances, it presents new societal and ethical challenges. The early Internet was devised and implemented in American research units, universities, and telecommunication companies that had vision and interest in cutting-edge research. The Internet then entered into the commercial phase (1984-1989). It was facilitated by the upgrading of backbone links, the writing of new software programs, and the growing number of interconnected international networks. The author examines the massive expansion of the Internet into a global network during the 1990s when business and personal computers with different operating systems joined the universal network. The instant and growing success of social networking-sites that enable Netusers to share information, photos, private journals, hobbies, and personal as well as commercial interests with networks of mutual friends and colleagues is discussed.

Streszczenie:
This paper investigates possible connections between History and the Internet. The starting point of this discussion is an acknowledgement of the presence of the Internet in social life, and its impact in the ways of obtaining and publicizing knowledge. More specifically, a discussion will be presented on how the Internet has been producing new documents for the work of historians and, better yet, how they have dealt with such sources. In order to do so, a few studies performed by historians are listed as utilizing the Internet as source. In this section, the idea is to point out what digital documents have been chosen by historians to perform their analyses, what difficulties they face, and what potential these sources have. It is understood that the Internet has great potential for historiographic work and, notably, for Present-Day History. The second part of this paper presents information on the research on Brazilian websites whose theme is historical landmarks, with the objective of investigating narratives produced and presented in school-level research websites about Brazilian historical landmarks. At this stage, the discussion is focused on debating the uses of History performed by these spaces. It is noticeable that they present narratives in which historical facts are presented linearly and in a simplified manner, following the so-called Traditional History. This two-way observation is expected to contribute with the debate on this important matter of the production and divulging of historical knowledge. Keywords: History – Teaching and Learning, The Internet.

Streszczenie:
ABSTRACTThis article considers the implications of recent innovations in digital history for the relationship between the academy and the public. It argues that while digitisation and the internet have attracted large new audiences, academic historians have been reluctant to engage with this new public. We suggest that recent innovations in academic digital history, such as the highly technocratic ‘Culturomics’ movement, have had the unintended effect of driving a wedge between higher education and the wider public. Similarly, academic history writing has been slow to embrace the possibilities of the internet as a means of dissemination and engagement; and academic publishing has moved even more reluctantly. Despite these issues, this article argues that the internet offers real opportunities for bridging the divide between the academy and a wider audience. Through non-traditional forms of publication such as blogging; through Open Access policies; and through new forms of visualisation of complex data, the digital and online allow us to present complex history to a wider audience. We conclude that historians need to embrace the ‘affordances’ and ‘disruptions’ posed by the internet to render the discipline more open and democratically accessible.

Access to the internet is fast becoming a basic right given the plethora of information available on the net these days. In the current scenario, the issue of internet shutdown has become an important concern in India. Internet shutdown affects people socially, psychologically and economically. On one hand, many democratic countries of the world are discussing about digital freedom and human rights, while on the other hand, some countries including India are continuously practicing Internet shutdowns in different parts of their countries. India has become the top country of the world in terms of the numbers of Internet shutdowns. The Internet has become such a prominent source of information for all of us that when Internet connectivity is suspended, many people are affected as they depend on the Internet services for various purposes. Internet shutdown is not only harmful to democracy and governance but also to the economy of the country. Internet shutdowns are direct violations of digital freedom and human rights. The main objective of this paper is to argue that access to internet is a basic right and highlight the problem of Internet shutdown in India and its adverse impact on the lives of Indians. In addition, this paper attempts to highlight a brief history of Internet shutdowns in India. The paper shows how frequent clampdowns on internet affects the economy, as has been the case of Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir thereby highlighting the case for internet freedom for the survival of the economy especially in Digital India.
