Although the concept of affect transfer has been addressed by many in the literature, the process underlying the transfer of brand associations from parent brands to their extensions is still unclear despite important theoretical and managerial implications. This paper proposes to conceptualise and model the empirical process underlying such transfer. The findings reveal that the capability of a parent brand to transfer specific brand associations to a line extension depends on an optimisation process where strong transfer occurs only when repeated measures of the same associations are not statistically distinct. Conversely, the transfer is limited when the statistical difference is either positive or negative in repeated measures. When the difference is positive, the extension appears to already ‘own’ the association in comparison to the parent brand and when negative the association is not compatible with the extension. The methodological and managerial implications of brand association transfer are discussed.

The article deals with the directions of development of modern international statistics. The main events in international statistics are described in detail: the 61st World Statistical Congress of the International Statistical Institute (ISI) and its satellite conferences. The main problems, strategic priorities and new approaches to solving methodological problems of international statistics are described. At the same time, the emphasis is on innovation in international statistics. During the last decade, an explosion in computing and information technology has taken place. With her came a huge amount of data (Big Data) in various fields such as medicine, biology, finance, and marketing. What ethical problems arise in connection with the Big Data? What is the role of web scanners in collecting data for compilation of official statistics? What indicators are important for policy making? These and many other topics were discussed during the 61st World Congress of Statistics, ISI. Participants of the congress, which represents statistical, scientific and business communities, exchanged views on recent developments in the content and methodology of statistics. International Statistical Institute has published the Strategy ISI 2017-2021. To increase activity and facilitate open dialogue, the International Statistical Institute organized an open meeting to discuss strategic priorities with its members. During these meetings, the opportunity was offered to provide practical guidance and suggestions on the most important activities, goals and achievements of the ISI and its associations The special event “Statistical Approaches to Environmental Impact and Climate Change Measurement” was held at the Congress, organized by the High Commission for Planning, the Moroccan Presidency of COP22 and the United Nations Statistics Division with the participation of the State Secretariat for Sustainable Development. During this event, issues concerning the statistical measurement and quantification of environmental indicators related to natural resources management, the effects of climate change and risks of natural disasters were discussed. Another problem that was considered at the congress was the problem of the development of information technology. The article deals with new tasks facing official statistics. With the rapid development of the survey methodology, various government agencies are now exploring how to combine national data from surveys with administrative data and census data to create reliable statistics for small areas. The problems of the association of researchers and practitioners who are interested in the interaction of computer sciences, statistics and data visualization are considered. The article also deals with problems of international statistical education. The focus was on the following question: the era of Big Data, what does it mean for us statisticians-educators; creating socially responsible societies with statistics; employability skills for statistics graduates.

(1) This study aims to examine the prevalence of depression and its correlation with Acculturative Stress and Social Connectedness among domestic and international students in an international university in Japan. (2) Methods: A Web-based survey was distributed among several classes of students of the university, which yielded 268 responses. On the survey, a nine-item tool from the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), the Social Connectedness Scale (SCS) and Acculturative Stress Scale for International Students (ASSIS) were used together with socio-demographic data. (3) Results: The prevalence of depression was higher among international than domestic students (37.81% and 29.85%, respectively). English language proficiency and student age (20 years old) showed a significant correlation with depression among domestic students (β = −1.63, p = 0.038 and β = 2.24, p = 0.048). Stay length (third year) also displayed a significant correlation with depression among international students (β = 1.08, p = 0.032). Among international and domestic students, a statistically significant positive correlation between depression and acculturative stress, and negative associations of social connectedness with depression and acculturative stress were also found. (4) Conclusions: The high prevalence of depression, and its association with Acculturation stress and Social Connectedness, among the students in this study highlight the importance of implementing support programs which consider the role of Acculturation and Social Connectedness.

Objectives: We aimed to test the predictive value of antenatal umbilical coiling index (aUCI) among a prospectively recruited cohort of antenatal women. Methods: Women with singleton pregnancies were recruited at their second-trimester scan. Images of the umbilical cord were used to calculate the aUCI. Pregnancy and birth outcomes were recorded and statistical associations between aUCI and small for gestational age (SGA) using international standard birth weight centiles and preterm birth were investigated (n = 430). Results: aUCI results were consistent with the literature and showed good reproducibility between observers. Abnormal aUCI was not associated with SGA, but there was a statistical association with preterm birth (odds ratio 3.3 (95% confidence interval 1.4–7.7, P = 0.003). The sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values for preterm birth were 47.6%, 76.9%, 9.6%, and 96.6%, respectively. Conclusions: The coiling index is unlikely to be useful in clinical practice as a screening tool for preterm birth owing to limited predictive value. We exclude a statistically or clinically significant association between abnormal coiling and SGA.

A descriptive survey was performed in order to assess the statistical content and quality of Brazilian and international dental journals, and compare their evolution throughout the last decades. The authors identified the reporting and accuracy of statistical techniques in 1000 papers published from 1970 to 2000 in seven dental journals: three Brazilian (Brazilian Dental Journal, Revista de Odontologia da Universidade de São Paulo and Revista de Odontologia da UNESP) and four international journals (Journal of the American Dental Association, Journal of Dental Research, Caries Research and Journal of Periodontology). Papers were divided into two time periods: from 1970 to 1989, and from 1990 to 2000. A slight increase in the number of articles that presented some form of statistical technique was noticed for Brazilian journals (from 61.0 to 66.7%), whereas for international journals, a significant increase was observed (65.8 to 92.6%). In addition, a decrease in the number of statistical errors was verified. The most commonly used statistical tests as well as the most frequent errors found in dental journals were assessed. Hopefully, this investigation will encourage dental educators to better plan the teaching of biostatistics, and to improve the statistical quality of submitted manuscripts.

Prof. CR Rao has been awarded the prestigious 2023 International Prize in Statistics. The citation reads: “In his remarkable 1945 paper published in the Bulletin of the Calcutta Mathematical Society, Calyampudi Radhakrishna (C.R.) Rao demonstrated three fundamental results that paved the way for the modern field of Statistics and provided statistical tools heavily used in science today……”. These three results are ‘Cramer-Rao Lower Bound’ (CRLB), ‘Rao- Blackwellization’ (RB) and the third one now flourished as ‘Information Geometry’. In this paper, we shall discuss two offshoots from his work over the eight decades. Several articles have appeared on his life and work (see for example, T. J. Rao (2019 and 2023a, 2023b) and Kumar (2023)). The first offshoot is based on one of the three breakthrough results, namely, Rao–Blackwell Theorem, first proved by C.R. Rao in 1945, when he was just 25 years old and also by Blackwell later in 1947. The second one is on Association Rule Mining (ARM), which he developed when he was 96 years old. These two papers reveal the transition of statistical methodologies from Fisherian concepts to recent applications of AI and ML. In this paper we shall pose some questions which need further study. Richard Arthur Reyment was born of parents of English, Swedish, and Spanish descent in Coburg, Victoria, Australia on 4 December 1926. After obtaining his bachelor degree from Melbourne University in 1948 he spent several years with the British Colonial Service in Nigeria. While there he obtained his masters degree from Melbourne and a doctorate from the University of Stockholm (Sweden). His work in Nigeria led to the appointment as professor at the University of Ibadan. He returned to Sweden in 1965 with an appointment from the Swedish Natural Science Research Council. In 1967 he was awarded his DSc from Melbourne University and was appointed to the Chair of Historical Geology and Paleontology at the University of Uppsala (Sweden), where he remained until his retirement in 1991. His early studies on random events, multivariate morphometrics, and statistical analysis in geology and biology naturally led him into the quantitative aspects of his chosen profession, and whetted his desire to share these experiences with others with similar interests. This, he decided, could best be accomplished through an organization to promote quantitative methods and approaches, which led to his concept of the International Association for Mathematical Geology (IAMG). His efforts and enthusiasm resulted in the founding of the Association at the ill-fated International Geological Congress (IGC) in Prague in 1968. Reyment was elected the first IAMG secretary general and later the second president. The IAMG is affiliated with both the IGC and the International Statistical Institute (ISI). In recognition of his scientific accomplishments he was awarded IAMG's highest award, the William Christian Krumbein Medal, in 1979 and a special Certificate of Merit in 2002. Reyment's pioneering efforts have influenced a generation of geologists and paleontologists.

The authors illustrate this approach with an application in which they compare the cross-tabulation results from fused data with those obtained from complete data. Their approach is also compared to the traditional hot-deck procedure.

Background: Cigarette smoking among medical students is becoming a serious public health problem worldwide. Objectives: To determine the daily cigarette smoking prevalence and its characteristics among undergraduate medical students at AL-Ghad International College, Abha city, Saudi Arabia. Methods and Materials: A community based cross-sectional study was conducted at AL-Ghad International College, Abha city, Saudi Arabia. A validated self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data from the participants. Descriptive data analysis was performed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 17. Association between different variables was performed using Chi-square and ANOVA tests. A P-value of less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The prevalence of daily cigarette smoking was 30.25%. Significant associations were found between the cigarette smoking and smokers in the age group of 20-25 years (P-value 0.001) and students of higher level of the study (P-value 0.005). About two-thirds (65.3%) of smokers began cigarette smoking after joining the College and 79.4% smoked 1 to 10 cigarettes per day. The association between number of cigarettes smoked per day and the duration of cigarette smoking in years showed statistically significant result (P. value 0.002). Conclusion: The daily cigarette smoking prevalence is still higher among undergraduate medical students. The higher prevalence of cigarette smoking might predict future adverse effects on health. This necessitates introduction of public health preventive and cessation programs which should be implemented by health and education authorities.

In this study, the revenue and import/export status of the domestic welding industry between 2017 and 2022 was analyzed using statistics provided by the Korea International Trade Association (KITA) and Korea Statistical Information Service (KOSTAT). The welding industry can be categorized into the welding equipment/consumables industry and welding process industry, which is part of the manufacturing process in the welding application industry. The welding process industry statistics are difficult to extract from the welding application industry statistics; therefore, they were calculated using the ratio of the welding-related expenditure to the total application industry expenditure. The welding industry's revenue, exports, and imports have recently recovered after hitting a low point during the COVID-19 pandemic. Moreover, the increase in the welding process industry imports and exports in the electronics industry offset the decrease in those of the shipbuilding and offshore industry for the specified investigation period.

This article analyses the factors conducive to recognising independence referendums and to winning these votes. After a tour d’horizon of the history of referendums on independence and a summary of the legal position, this article argues that independence referendums are most likely to be implemented when this is in the interest of the three Western powers on the UN Security Council. While there is a statistically significant correlation between the support for independence (the yes-vote) and international recognition, this is much lower than the 100% association between support of the three permanent Western powers on the Security Council and international recognition. Countries may cite legal, democratic and philosophical principles, but the statistical and historical facts suggest that these are of secondary importance when it comes to recognising states after independence referendums.

We studied the level of similarities between information theoretic measures and the various tools of regression analysis, i.e., between Shannon entropy and the total sum of squares of the dependent variable, relative mutual information and coefficients of correlation, conditional entropy and residual sum of squares, etc. We observed that mutual information and its dynamical extensions provide an alternative approach with some advantages to study the association between several international stock indices. Furthermore, mutual information and conditional entropy are relatively efficient compared to the measures of statistical dependence.

Objective: This study was conducted to determine the prevalence of violence against women(VAW) and some associated factors in a sample of employed women in Kufa university. Methodology: A cross sectional study of VAW covering 110 employed married women in 6 colleges in Kufa university was carried out during the period of 1st of March to the 1st of May 2011, data collection was done by using questionnaire forms containing demographic and violence related questions as well as questions related to husbands of participants. Results: Results showed that about 37.3 % of the sample were ever exposed to violence by their husbands both physical and sexual violence. Thirty six women (32.7 %) exposed to physical violence and 15 women (13.6%) exposed to sexual violence. No significant statistical association ( p=0.37) was found between violence and if the husband is relative or not as well as no significant statistical association ( p=1) was found between violence and husband's work. This study showed a significant statistical association found between husband's satisfaction with women’s work and the violence (p=0.03). The study also showed that 14 (12.7 %) women subjected to violence reported that they cannot complete their lives with violent husbands compared with 27 (24.5 % ) who reported that they will complete their lives with violence with significant statistical association (p= 0.005). No significant association between women’s level of education and exposure to violence ( p= 0.39), also there was no significant association between the number of children and exposure to violence ( p=0.383) as well as there was no significant statistical association between the age of women and the exposure to violence ( p= 0.07). Conclusion: These results indicate the need for more attention to be given in order to prevent this problem by the governments, ministries (especially ministries of women, human right and justice) , international organizations, religious leaders and NGOs through education about this problem and reactivation of laws in the constitution regarding women’s rights.

Malcolm Peet (2004, this issue) presents some evidence that the international variations in the outcome of schizophrenia are associated with higher amounts of refined sugar and dairy products in the average national diet data published by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. An association is also found between the prevalence of depression and a low dietary intake of fish and seafood. It is a simple correlational study with a multivariate statistical analysis that finds very strong associations. The regression coefficients reported suggest that these foodstuff consumption levels account for almost all the variance in the outcome of schizophrenia and the prevalence of depression. Is Peet correct in stating that previous epidemiological studies of these issues are missing crucial information, or is the reported association between diet and psychiatric disorder at a population level just a particularly dramatic example of the ecological fallacy?

We conducted a critical review of the article “Effects on Children’s Physical and Mental Well-Being of a Physical-Activity-Based School Intervention Program: A Randomized Study”, published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health in 2023 as part of the Special Issue “Psychomotricity and Physical Education in School Health”. We identified multiple mistakes in the statistical analyses applied. First, the authors claim to have found a statistically significant association between the proposed intervention and change in body composition (body mass index (BMI) percentiles, relative fat mass, and BMI classes) by way of exhibiting differences in nominal significance between the pre- and post-intervention changes within the control and intervention groups, instead of exhibiting a significant difference between groups. Furthermore, the analysis described fails to account for clustering and nesting in the data. The reporting of the statistical methods and results include multiple elements that are variously incorrect, incoherent, or impossible. Revised statistical analyses are proposed which can render the study’s methods valid and its results substantiated, whereas the current methods and results are invalid and unsubstantiated, respectively.

Objective. Dental caries remains a prevalent disease worldwide. Several epidemiological studies have shown that it affects the oral health of the pediatric population, and the Galapagos population in Ecuador is no exception. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of dental caries and its association, based on baseline information from the Galapagos Oral Health Study (ESSO-Gal), in children of the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador. Methods. A cross-sectional study was conducted involving 804 children aged 2–11 years. The prevalence of dental caries was assessed using the International Caries Detection and Assessment System (ICDAS II) criteria, while the presence of dental biofilm was assessed using the Silness–Löe index. Descriptive statistics, including frequency analysis and measures of central tendency and dispersion, were performed. Inferential statistical analyses were conducted to identify associations between variables. Statistical analyses were performed using the SPSS version 25.0 statistical program. Results. The caries prevalence rates based on ICDAS II codes 1–6, 1–2, and 3–6 were 98.01%, 96.9%, and 85%, respectively. A statistically significant difference was observed among the different islands regarding the cutoff point for ICDAS II codes 3–6 ( p ≤ 0.001 ). Participants aged 6–11 years had the highest caries prevalence. Conclusions. The results show a high prevalence of dental caries among children in the Galapagos Islands, which increases with age. Contrary to expectations, the study did not find a significant correlation between the severity of dental caries and the presence of dental biofilm.

Background The International Frontal Sinus Anatomy Classification (IFAC) was introduced to more accurately characterize ethmoid and frontal sinus pneumatization patterns. The prevalence of IFAC cells and their anatomic associations have not been described. Objective The goal was to examine the prevalence of IFAC cells and determine radiologic features associated with a low-lying anterior ethmoidal artery (LAEA). Methods Imaging of adult patients who underwent computed tomographies from January 2015 to March 2016 were retrospectively reviewed by using the IFAC classification. We also measured the distance from the skull base to the anterior ethmoidal artery (AEA), the height of the lateral lamella of the cribriform plate, and anterior-posterior diameter from the anterior wall of the frontal sinus to the skull base (APF). Patients with a history of sinus surgery, trauma, malignancy, or congenital anomaly were excluded. Statistical analysis was performed by using Pearson correlation coefficients and χ2 tests. Results A total of 95 patients met the inclusion criteria. There was a significant association between supraorbital ethmoid cells and an LAEA (p < 0.001), with a significant effect size (ϕ = 0.276, p = 0.007). An inverse relationship was observed between Keros type I classification I and an LAEA (p < 0.001), with a significant effect size (ϕ = -0.414, p = 0.000). Significant associations were found between the AEA distance from the skull base and the cribriform lateral lamella height (R = 0.576, p < 0.001). In addition, there was a significant association between the AEA distance from the skull base and the APF (R = 0.497, p < 0.001). Conclusion The presence of a supraorbital ethmoid cell and a wide APF were associated with an LAEA. There was a significant relationship between Keros type I classification and the AEA adjacent to the skull base. Delineation of these anatomic relationships may be helpful during endoscopic sinus surgery to avoid complications.

International trade occupies a special place in research, since in the context of globalization, countries are increasingly involved in international economic relations, as well through entry into regional integration unions. The Kyrgyz Republic in 2015 became a member of the Eurasian Economic Union (hereinafter EAEU), a fairly young association. This article provides a statistical estimation of the benefits of Kyrgyzstan's entry into the EAEU using the gravity model. The analysis showed that accession of Kyrgyzstan to the EAEU created benefits to other members of this association rather than to itself. In addition, part of the republic's exports is closely related to imports, both in terms of raw materials and in terms of re-exports. This means that with the deterioration of trade conditions with third countries, the competitiveness of its exports, depending on third countries, also decreased.

The association between ICT diffusion and education is a subject of hot debate in both ICT and educational circles. Stances range from positive enthusiast, to skeptics, to disbelievers vis-a-vis the impact of ICT on students’ achievements. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the presence of any correlation between students’ academic achievements as recorded by Trends in International Mathematics and Science (TIMMS 2011) and the penetration of ICT in their schools and households, with focus primarily on computers and the Internet. The paper relies on the analysis of the data published by the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMMS 2011), international study center and the international association for the evaluation of educational achievements. Statistical data analysis will be employed to figure out whether there is any correlation between the penetration level of ICT and the students’ score in math and science tests as recorded by the TIMMS 2011 international scale. The analysis conducted within the scope of this research indicates the lack of any association between ICT use and students achievements in math and science subjects. Though the linkage between students’ achievements is not a straightforward issue that can be uncovered via simple regression analysis, however, the results definitely indicate that employment of ICT in both schools and homes is an insignificant factor that can be easily offset by other major factors, like socio-economic conditions, instruction resources, teachers’ capabilities, or cultural factors.

Abstract Introduction: Benign prostatic hyperplasia is a common condition in elderly men and is a major cause of bladder outflow obstruction. Various parameters are used in clinical practice, to be able to assess the severity of the enlarged prostate and its direct effect on the quality of life of the patient in terms of evaluation of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTSs). These are the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS); urodynamic studies such as uroflowmetry, measurement of postvoid residual urine (PVRU), prostatic volume (PV), intravesical prostatic protrusion, and digital rectal examination. Out of these, sonographic measurement of prostate volume and postvoid residual urine is the most widely used and readily available noninvasive methods. The present hospital-based study aims to establish an association between the PV, PVRU, and clinical symptom scores derived as per IPSS. Methods: This prospective, hospital-based study was done over a sample group of 748 symptomatic males with LUTS, referred from outpatient departments over a period of 2 years, for the assessment of PV and postvoid residual urine. The ordinal data sets were compared using the Chi-square test and a P < 0.05 was taken as statistically significant. Results: The Chi-square statistics for the association of prostate volume with IPSS were 13.1678. P value was = 0.01. The Chi-square statistics for the association between PVRU and IPSS scores were 1.613. P value was = 0.80645. Conclusion: The results derived from the data establish that the statistical association between prostate volume and IPSS scores is weakly significant and association between PVRU and IPSS scores is not statistically significant at all.

AbstractOrganization of international medical congresses is a perfect example of multidisciplinary cooperation with professional medical associations and Medical schools on one side and professional congress organizers on the other. Medical congresses are perhaps most frequent congresses in the world. Organization of medical congresses can be achieved in a number of ways: Organizers can be local professional associations or Medical schools, international professional associations and international professional congress organizers. To be nominated for organization of a congress, successful cooperation of medical professionals is needed, especially doctors and professional congress organizers. Success largely depends on knowledge of the availability of conference halls, available accommodations in the vicinity of the congress halls, ease of access to the congress destination, expectancies of possible candidates who will attend in connection to the congress destination, lobbying for nomination for organization of a congress. This article will analyze availability of conference halls in Croatia, accommodation capacities, transport possibilities. For the needs of this article, pilot questionnaire was constructed about demands of possible participants and their preferable destinations to be visited. Statistical analysis of Medical congresses in Europe is also shown according to geographical spreading. Concluding the article, we show that better education of medical staff about the possibilities of professional congress organizing are very important, as well as sharing of the experiences from big congresses among the medical professional in the field of medical congress organization. With multidisciplinary approach of all participants in organization of the congress (Ministry of Tourism, Croatian Tourist Association, Croatian Associations of professionals in congress tourism, hotels, medical professionals) Croatia could be much better recognized as destination for organizing medical congresses.

The association of respiratory symptoms and lung function with the use of gas for cooking was examined using data collected as part of the European Community Respiratory Health Survey, an international multicentre study. Associations between gas cooking and respiratory symptoms and respiratory function were assessed by logistic and multiple regression models. Tests for interaction were used to examine whether the effect of gas cooking varied between centres and, as there was evidence for this, the average effects were estimated using standard methods for random effects meta-analysis. Data from 5,561 males and 6,029 females living in 23 centres in 11 countries were analysed. There was no significant association found between respiratory symptoms and gas cooking in males. In females the association between some respiratory symptoms and gas cooking varied between centres with an overall positive association with "wheeze in the last 12 months" (odds ratio (OR) 1.24: 95% confidence interval (95% CI) 1.00-1.54) and "wheeze with breathlessness in the last 12 months" (OR 1.33: 95% CI 1.06-1.69). There was no evidence that atopy modified this association. Cooking with gas was associated with airways obstruction in both males and females although the differences failed to reach statistical significance. In some countries the use of gas for cooking is associated with respiratory symptoms suggestive of airways obstruction in females.

<p>In this paper, the association between religiosity and academic performance among accounting students enrolled at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) is explored, as recent research demonstrates a positive association between religiosity and academic success. Students' religiosity was measured using proxies from an Islamic perspective, whilst their academic performances were measured using their Cumulative Grade Point Averages (CGPA). The statistical analysis revealed no significant correlation between religiosity and academic performance among accounting students at IIUM. However, a closer examination of the results revealed that students at IIUM possessed high levels of religiosity as well as high levels of academic performances.</p>

Streszczenie:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationship between two major constructs (supply chain management practices (SCMP) and supply chain performance measures), which determines the efficiency and efficacy of retail-supply chain management, using a rigorous empirical method to validate the instrument scale for measuring the validity and reliability of the identified constructs. Additionally, the paper further tests the relationship between SCMP and supply chain performance measures using structural equation modeling (SEM). Design/methodology/approach Data were compiled and collected from 213 operations and supply chain (SC) heads from leading retail stores in India. Confirmatory factor analysis was used to test the validity of the proposed measurement scale and the relationship is tested using SEM. Findings The results of the research will help the decision makers in the SC/procurement field to understand the importance of the association between SCMP and supply chain performance measures. Statistical tests show that the implementation of SCMP are associated with supply chain performance measures, which leads to overall improvements; moreover, there is a statistically significant association between the five SCMP and eight SCPM. Research limitations/implications This research is also needed to provide more understanding about the SCMP along with the supply chain performance measures and the positive association among them. Overall, this research provides an additional insight into the growing field of the relationships between SCMP and SCPM. Clearly, the field has ample space to grow in terms of research and practice. Originality/value This research paper contributes to the literature on supply chain performance measurement.
