Streszczenie:
Intergroup contact, encounters, and dialogues are pervasively used in settings of protracted, ethnopolitical conflict as a device for improving relations between the sides and promoting conflict resolution and reconciliation. This chapter reviews the theoretical underpinnings of such efforts and discusses different models and modes of planned intergroup contact in conflict, as well as the potential of the intergroup encounters to bring about change, while focusing on the ethical implications and consequences of the encounter with the other and its narrative in the setting of protracted ethnopolitical conflict. Specifically, it focuses on the case study of the violent protracted asymmetric conflict between Israelis and Palestinians. In this context it discusses the extent to which different modes and models of organized intergroups can overcome moral exclusion, extend the boundaries of moral responsibility for the other, and increase support for more socially just and equitable relations.

Streszczenie:
Early research on intergroup contact in social psychology had a clear social change agenda. Authors like Clark and Allport directly addressed themes of power and inequality as they studied the effects of contact to support desegregation activism in the United States. During the subsequent decades the focus on inequality, power, and social change was replaced with the quest for a generalized theory of prejudice reduction. This chapter shows how this change in focus took place; it considers the ways in which some contact research continues to ignore social justice concerns today; and it reflects on the effects of this focus. Finally, the chapter sketches—in broad outline—a model of the way intergroup contact functions to reproduce social situations and the experiences of people who participate in these situations.

Streszczenie:
The contact hypothesis posits that having diverse neighbours may reduce one’s intergroup prejudice. This hypothesis is difficult to test as individuals self-select into neighbourhoods. Using a slum relocation programme in India that randomly assigned neighbours, I examine the effects of exposure to other-caste neighbours on trust and attitudes towards members of other castes. Combining administrative data on housing assignment with original survey data on attitudes, I find evidence corroborating the contact hypothesis. Exposure to more neighbours of other castes increases inter-caste trust, support for inter-caste marriage, and the belief that caste injustice is growing. I explore the role of friendships in facilitating these favourable attitudes. The findings shed light on the positive effects of exposure to diverse social groups through close proximity in neighbourhoods.

Streszczenie:
This chapter focuses on intergroup dialogue (IGD), an educational approach that teaches about and for social justice. Intergroup dialogue addresses one of the central concerns in contemporary research on intergroup contact between groups with distinct social statuses: Do identity salience and positive relationships mobilize or sedate collective action on the part of disadvantaged or advantaged groups? We explicate how IGD addresses the concerns through its theoretical and practice model. IGD pedagogy—content, structured interaction, and facilitation—fosters critical-dialogic communication processes that in turn impact cognitive and affective psychological processes. These two kinds of processes then produce outcomes. Results from a longitudinal, multi-site field experiment of randomly assigned (dialogue and control) students (N = 1437) showed significant treatment effects for dialogue students and strong support for the theoretical model and the centrality of the communication processes. These results support our claim that critical-dialogic intergroup dialogue heightens, not mutes, commitment to action.
