Pełny tekst źródłaIntroduction. Animals and humans are capable to modulate their own brain activity if they are provided with real-time sensory feedback thereof. The range of controllable neural activities reaches from oscillatory brain rhythms, over hemodynamic response function to the firing of single neurons or even action-potential associated calcium signals. The voluntary control of neural activity facilitated by this ‘closed-loop’ experimental paradigm is at the very heart of the mind-body interaction and can be used to address philosophical questions. But as numerous successful applications of neurofeedback and brain-computer interfaces have demonstrated, it is also a powerful tool in motor rehabilitation, pain management, emotion regulation or memory improvement. Because most previous studies were conducted on humans using non-invasive recordings techniques, the neurophysiological mechanisms of neural self-regulation remained obscure. The main objective of the present work was thus to provide a better understanding of its underlying principles. Objectives. Following a multiscale theoretical framework of neural oscillations, the present investigation was largely guided by the following questions: 1) What are the physiological markers of successful control? 2) Are some regions or spatiotemporal scales more easily controllable than others? 3) Are training effects specific or generalized? and 4) What are subject-invariant successful cognitive strategies of neural self-control? To address these questions, we took advantage of intracerebral macro- and micro-electrode recordings in epileptic patients undergoing long-term monitoring in the presurgical context

Pełny tekst źródłaSpatial memory is composed of an encoding phase during wakefulness, followed by a consolidation phase during sleep, corresponding to the replay of sequences of activation of hippocampal place cells observed during wake. Those reactivations occur during slow wave sleep, mostly during hippocampal high frequency oscillations, called sharp-wave ripples (SPW-Rs). Moreover, SPW-Rs occurrence is coordinated with others cortical rhythms (delta waves 2-4Hz and spindles 10-15Hz). Although this theoretical framework is widely accepted, it is only based on correlative studies. Moreover, in addition to memory consolidation, SPW-Rs and delta waves are also involved in sleep homeostasis. Finally, a fine description of the interactions between the two phenomena is still lacking. By using a newly designed brain machine interface, we associated spontaneous reactivations of a single place cell during sleep to intracranial rewarding stimulations. At awakening, mice went and stayed within the place field of the related neuron, demonstrating the possibility to create artificial memories during sleep. It also demonstrated the causal role of place cells on spatial navigation, and that they still convey spatial information during sleep supporting the existence of sleep reactivation. We also developed a second brain machine interface in order to manipulate delta waves during sleep. We showed that the occurrence of both SPW-Rs and delta waves decrease during sleep, even though their coordination was maintained. Finally, we identify a sub-population of cortical neurons potentially involved both in the generation of delta waves and their modulation by the homeostatic pressure of sleep

Pełny tekst źródłaThis thesis is devoted to the study of the magneto-transport properties of two dimensional electron gas (2DEG), and more specifically graphene on silicon carbide (G/SiC) as well as the interface between two complex oxides LaAlO3 / SrTiO3 (LAO/STO). We take advantage of very high magnetic field (up to 80 T) and very low temperature (down to 40 mK) to investigate the quantum transport properties, which are evocative of the underlying electronic band-structure. In G/SiC, close to the quantum Hall breakdown regime, we measure an ultra-broad quantum Hall plateau at R=h/2e² covering a magnetic field range of more than 70 T (from 7 T to 80 T). Accordingly, the longitudinal resistance is close to zero, but displays unexpected weak 1/B-periodic oscillations. Based on microscopic observations, this 2DEG is modeled as a low charge carrier density graphene matrix decorated by micrometers-size puddles with larger doping. Numerical simulations of the transport properties reproduce well both the broad Quantum Hall plateau and the presence of the oscillations. Besides the SiC substrate which acts as a charge reservoir and stabilizes the quantum Hall state at filling factor ν=2, a magnetic field dependent transfer of charges involving the puddles is responsible for the presence of the oscillating features. This original study provides new insights for resistance metrology purposes. The 2DEG arising at the interface between the complex oxides LAO and STO is nowadays envisioned for future multi-functional devices. Their electronic properties are still a matter of debate and require further investigations. The high field magneto-resistance of this 2DEG displays quasi-periodic Shubnikov-de Haas Oscillations (SdHO) and a linear Hall effect up to 55 T at low temperature. We observe a large discrepancy between the carrier density extracted from the period of the SdHO and the slope of the Hall resistance, which constitutes a strong evidence for the presence of many sub-bands crossing the Fermi energy. The quasi-periodic oscillations of the magneto-resistance are well reproduced by numerical simulations taking into account the strong Rashba effect at the interface. In addition, from the back-gate voltage evolution of the SdHO at sub-kelvin temperature, we identify the electronic sub-bands contributing to transport, the orbital symmetry from which they derive, as well as their spatial localization along the interface

Pełny tekst źródłaThe ability of organisms to spontaneously generate order relies on the intricate interplay of mechanical and bio-chemical signals. If the general consensus is that chemical signaling governs the behavior of cells, an increasing amount of evidence points towards the impact of mechanical factors into differentiation, proliferation, motility and cancer progression. In this context, several studies recently highlighted the existence of long-range mechanical excitations (i.e. waves) at the supra-cellular level. Here, we investigate the origins of those velocity waves in tissues and their correlation with the presence of boundaries. Practically, we confine epithelial cell mono-layers to quasi-one dimensional geometries, to force the almost ubiquitous establishment of tissue-level waves. By tuning the length of the tissues, we uncover the existence of a phase transition between global and multi-nodal oscillations, and prove that in the latter regime, wavelength and period are independent of the confinement length. Together, these results demonstrate the intrinsic origin of tissue oscillations, which could provide cells with a mechanism to accurately measure distances at the supra-cellular level and ultimately lead to spatial patterning. Numerical simulations based on a Self-propelled Voronoi model reproduce the phase transition we measured experimentally and help in guiding our preliminary investigations on the origin of these wave-like phenomena, and their potential role for the spontaneous appearance of hair follicles in mouse skin explants

Pełny tekst źródłaThere are two controversial models discussed in the literature. The reorientation model assumes that the surfactants adsorb in two distinct states, differing in their orientation. This model is able to describe the frequency dependence of the modulus E. However, it assumes reorientation dynamics in the millisecond time regime. In order to assess this model, we designed a SHG pump-probe experiment that addresses the orientation dynamics. Results obtained reveal that the orientation dynamics occur in the picosecond time regime, being in strong contradiction with the two states model.
The second model regards the interface as an interphase. The adsorption layer consists of a topmost monolayer and an adjacent sublayer. The dissipative process is due to the molecular exchange between both layers. The assessment of this model required the design of an experiment that discriminates between the surface compositional term and the sublayer contribution. Such an experiment has been successfully designed and results on elastic and viscoelastic surfactant provided evidence for the correctness of the model.
Because of its inherent surface specificity, surface SHG is a powerful analytical tool that can be used to gain information on molecular dynamics and reorganization of soluble surfactants. They are central elements of both experiments. However, they impose several structural elements of the model system. During the course of this thesis, a proper model system has been identified and characterized. The combination of several linear and nonlinear optical techniques, allowed for a detailed picture of the interfacial architecture of these surfactants.

Pełny tekst źródłaCoastal marine ecosystems are constantly subject to pollution, particularly hydrocarbons, because of their location and their environmental characteristics. The key role of microorganisms in the degradation of these pollutants is now well described. However, fluctuating oxygenation conditions in these coastal environments, due to tides and macrofauna bioturbation activities influence microbial communities. Thus, this thesis work aimed to characterize the assembly of microbial hydrocarbonoclastic communities of coastal marine sediments subjected to oxic/anoxic oscillations in the presence of oil during a bioreactor experiment. The adaptation of MOHCB, particularly of Alcanivorax and Cycloclasticus genera, to these oxygen variations has been investigated by oligotyping. Ecotypes were identified according to the oxygenation conditions demonstrating adaptation capacities of these two genera to the oscillating oxygen conditions. The structure of archaeal communities (16S rRNA transcript sequencing) did not show any modification related to the oxygenation conditions thus demonstrating greater adaptation and/or resistance capacities in these microorganisms compared to the bacterial communities. Finally, metagenomics analyses revealed a specific functional response to oxic/anoxic oscillations. Thus, this thesis provides new insights into the influence of oxygenation variations on microbial communities and consequently on the degradation of hydrocarbons in coastal marine ecosystems

Pełny tekst źródłaGas transfer across the air-water interface in turbulent flows is an important process for many environmental systems. To improve the understanding of the basic principles involved in this phenomenon it is necessary to use suitable apparatus and experimental techniques. In this study, experiments and numerical simulation were conducted in a tank with one and two oscillating grids. In the two-grids configuration, experimental data were compared with analytical solutions, obtaining good agreement. Four quantities have been evaluated: turbulent kinetic energy, dissipation rate, eddy viscosity, and length scale. In the one-grid configuration, a microprobe has been used for measurements of oxygen concentration. In addition, the velocity and concentration fields near the interface were measured simultaneously using the combined particle image velocimetry (PIV) - laser induced fluorescence (LIF) technique. With the combined PIV-LIF technique, the total mass flux across the air-water interface could be obtained directly. The qualitative and quantitative results should help guide future work at the subject.

Pełny tekst źródłaThe study of turbulence induced mass transfer at the interface between a gas and a liquid is of great interest in many environmental phenomena and industrial processes. Even though this issue has already been studied for several decades, its understanding is still not good enough to create realistic models (RANS or sub-grid LES), especially when considering a liquid phase with a complex rheology. This experimental work aims at studying fundamental aspects of turbulent mass transfer at a flat interface between carbon dioxide and a Newtonian or non-Newtonian liquid, stirred by homogeneous and quasi isotropic turbulence. Non-Newtonian fluids studied are aqueous solutions of a model polymer, Xanthan gum (XG), at various concentrations, showing viscoelastic and shear-thinning properties. Optical techniques for the acquisition of the liquid phase velocity field (Stereoscopic Particle Image Velocimetry, SPIV) and dissolved gas concentration field (Inhibited Planar Laser Induced Fluorescence, I-PLIF) are for the first time coupled, keeping a high spatial resolution, to access velocity and concentration statistics in the first few millimetres under the interface. A new version of I-PLIF is developed. It is designed to be more efficient for near surface measurements, but its use can be generalized to other single or multiphase mass transfer situations. Bottom shear turbulence in the liquid phase is generated by an oscillating grid apparatus. The mechanisms of turbulence production and the characteristics of oscillating grid turbulence (OGT) are studied. The importance of the oscillatory component of turbulence is discussed. A mean flow enhancement effect upon polymer addition is evidenced. The mechanisms of turbulent mass transfer at a flat interface are finally observed in water and low concentration polymer solutions. A conditional analysis of turbulent mass fluxes allows to distinguish the type of events contributing to mass transfer and discuss their respective impact in water and polymer solutions

Pełny tekst źródłaThe present work deals with the motion of a Taylor bubble rising through vertical oscillating pipes. The aim is to perform a more detailed and experimental quantitative study of this unsteady flow, still seldom addressed in the literature. The investigation is restricted to high Reynolds numbers to understand inertia effects. Experimental results are provided for two different configurations : 1) pipes with two different inner diameters (9.8 mm and 20 mm) filled with water, 2) the thinner pipe (D=9.8 mm) filled with four low viscous fluids. So the Bond number Bo, based on the steady rise velocity varies from 13 to 57, where the effects of surface tension can be considered. The bubble trajectory is tracked by using a high-speed video camera. The average terminal and fluctuating velocity, as well as the phase shift with the oscillating plate are obtained by using image processing. The main results show that for weak acceleration, the mean velocity decreases with the relative acceleration as the fluctuating velocity increases in proportion to this acceleration. Beyond a critical relative acceleration, the average velocity increases and the fluctuating velocity increase seems to slow down. This behavior change seems to be related to the interface deformation (modified curvature, surface waves) which becomes significant in high accelerations. Additionally, comparisons are made with the numerical results obtained by neglecting the capillary effects. Correlations allowing the prediction of mean and fluctuating velocities depending on the Bond number and relative acceleration are proposed and compared with our experimental results. The time evolution of the radii of curvature in the vicinity of the bubble nose is also studied for different relative accelerations and the results are compared with the stagnant case. In high accelerations, the formation and propagation of surface waves which may influence the bubble dynamics are quantified

Pełny tekst źródłaCoupling between flow instabilities and acoustic resonances in ducts with closed side branches leads to Flow Induced Pulsations (FIPs). This is a typical phenomenon in engineering applications (gas transport systems, compressor installations, and chemical plants). The objective of this work is to extend the knowledge about FIPs when the transported medium is not uniquely gas but a combination of gas and (a small quantity of) liquid. For two configurations of double side branches (in tandem and in quasi-cross), the amplitude of pressure pulsations in the side branches was measured for different liquid injection rates. This was repeated with the liquid injection point located at different places to allow different flow regimes at the pipe connections. The results show a strong effect of the water content on the pulsations. On basis of these results and additional measurements, the following hypotheses for the effect of liquid were made: (1) interaction of the liquid with the flow instability and (2) increase of the acoustical damping in the ducts in presence of liquid. The effect of liquid on damping was measured with a dedicated test setup designed to have a stratified flow. It was found that the liquid always increases the acoustical damping, mainly due to the reduction of the effective cross section by the liquid, and because of the increased turbulent friction at the interface between gas and liquid

This study investigated the mixed monolayers containing Poly(n-butyl methacrylate) ,Poly(iso-butyl methacrylate) , Poly(sec-butyl methacrylate),Poly(tert-butyl methacrylate) and Polycaprolactone. Temperature and mixing ratio were used as the variables to observe the behavior of the monolayers at air/water interface by measuring surface pressure-area per molecule(π-A) isotherm and barrier oscillation curve. The relationship of temperature, composition and stability of these monolayers were analyzed by thermodynamics. The analysis of π-A isotherm and excess area showed that the difference of the isotherm curve of four isomers is due to the structure of the side chain functional groups. Furthermore, we can know the system deviates from the deal condition. The miscibility of PBMA isomers with PCL was different because of the structure of side chain functional groups. The results of oscillation were different because of material structure and glass transition temperature (Tg). Furthermore, we can know the growth mechanism and physical meaning by exploring the surface dilatational modulus |E^* |_app of the monolayers.
