This study analyzes the Intercultural Adjustment of Portuguese Expatriates and investigates the main antecedent variables of this adjustment. The sample included 209 participants, to whom an individual questionnaire was given. The results revealed the existence of two Work Adjustment factors ("Work Requirements" and "Interaction with colleagues and subordinates"), two factors Country Adjustment factors ("Economic Aspects" and "Leisure Aspects"), and one factor of Psychological Adjustment. For the analyses of antecedent factors, we used one scale of Language Proficiency, two scales of Expatriation Motives ("Better Life" and "Adventure") and a scale referring to perception of differences between Portugal and country of Expatriation ("Perceived Differences Between Countries"). We also included demographic variables (e.g., gender, age, education), organizational variables (e.g., size and sector), and variables referring to the expatriation situation (e.g., expatriation by personal initiative, expatriation in the context of an organization). Through multiple regression analysis we attempted to identify which variables had the highest predictive power of adjustment factors. "Perceived Differences Between Countries" was the first variable retained in all the models, indicating that participants who perceived their current conditions as better than those they had in Portugal also had higher levels of adjustment. In addition to the perception of differences between countries, the explanatory model of scale "Leisure Aspects" also retained the variable Language Proficiency and the model for "Psychological Adjustment" also retained the gender.

Streszczenie:

There is an extreme underrepresentation of indigenous peoples within American study abroad programs, and student participants rarely gain an authentic experience, awareness, and intercultural sensitivity towards such groups. This case study seeks to address this disparity through the creation of a new geography short-term study abroad program titled, “Resources and Indigenous Peoples of Oceania”, at the University of Missouri. This program is based on providing geographic opportunities for students to experience the diverse physical landscapes of New Zealand and interact with the local Maori indigenous people and their culture. The Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity (DMIS) is used both before and after the study abroad program to measure changes in student participants’ indigenous intercultural sensitivity, as well as student program journal entries and final papers. The goal of this case study is to discover whether or not a study abroad program with a focus on elements of indigenous culture can actually improve students’ intercultural sensitivity towards such groups.

Streszczenie:
The history and culture of Scotland has been shaped by its relationships with other cultures across Northern Europe, in particular with continental Europe and Scandinavia. Using the concept of entangled histories, this thesis examines intercultural encounters evident in the historical, material and literary cultures of coastal communities in Scotland and Norway. An interdisciplinary methodology applies methods and perspectives from both history and cultural studies, in order to investigate the relationship between culture and history. The main aim of the research was to establish how transnational cultural regions are created and maintained between Scotland and Norway after 1700. Using case studies from local history, the research aims to capture intercultural histories and diffuse socio-cultural dynamics, and set them in the context of nation- and region-building during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The analysis has therefore focused both on historical and socio-political conditions, but also the everyday experience (Alltagsgeschichte) of people living in regional communities, and how they participate in the construction of transnational memories. Having examined how intercultural narratives are created and adapted in order to renegotiate national and regional identities over time, the research points to the important role played by transnational frameworks and entangled histories. As such, this thesis makes a significant contribution to the fields of British Studies, cultural transfer studies, social history, but also human geography and literature, and other areas of cultural production that create intercultural affinities, identification and belonging in Northern Europe.

The purpose of this study is to examine the use of interactive uncertainty reduction strategies and to se there is a correlation between the use of the strategies and uncertainty reduction process of undergraduate relations students. This is the first attempt of bringing uncertainty reduction theory to explain how the relation students reduce uncertainty during an interaction with a person from a different culture. It is also an initial attempt to apply Douglas' (1990) with intercultural communication and with public relations students. Participants are five undergraduate relations students who volunteer. They will interact role playing with a person from Japan who acts international client. Pre and post-interaction questionnaires are administrated. Two types of interact strategies found are question-asking and self-disclosure Only two of them can significantly reduce uncertainty of interacting with the person from Japan for six minutes.

This contribution surveys the emergence and character of the Middle Horizon in Peru’s north highlands. It centers on Ancash department, a region with a rich and unique archaeological record for contextualizing interaction during the period. My discussion begins by detailing the sequence and variability of interregional interaction in Ancash Department during the latter half of the 1st millennium AD. Then I will examine the general implications of the available data – especially architecture, long distance goodsand ceramic style – with a view to identify current difficulties and to encourage future problem-oriented investigations. Two terms help contextualize the cultural dynamism of the Middle Horizon: bundling (purposeful acquisition and clustering of objects from long-distance) and vector (a distinct cultural predisposition facilitating interaction). Although there is evidence of Wari contact before imperial expansion, trade interaction increased dramatically during the early Middle Horizon, focused on ‘bundled’ patterns of acquisition. These were followed by new exchange orientations and stylistic emulation. There is very little evidence to indicate territorial control, but Wari strategies highlighted the rich areas of western Ancash, while apparently de-emphasising EasternAncash. Religion and prestige economies appear to have been the most common factors for local engagements with Wari culture.

This thesis explores the question of intercultural personhood in two 'mainstream' Australian cases within interpersonal, intercultural relations in Australian contexts in the second half of the twentieth century. The problem is viewed through three disciplinary lenses: those of communication, psychology and sociology. A qualitative, interdisciplinary approach integrates these through an inductive biographical research design. Within cross-cultural communication studies, a host culture such as that of the Anglo-Australian majority is seen in a monolithic and static way to which Australians of other cultural backgrounds are seen to adapt. These studies give no place to the changes which members of the majority undergo. 'Intercultural personhood', a term coined by Kim (1988, 2001), describes the kinds of 'ethnic' individuals who through negotiating their identities within personal, social and mass communication contexts, both host and ethnic, move beyond the bounds of their own cultural heritage to embrace both their former cultural identity and the new 'host' (viz Australian) identity. In this thesis, the elements of cross-cultural adaptation theory and of 'intercultural personhood' are applied to the intercultural experience of 'mainstream' Australians. From preliminary memory work workshops and focus groups, the cases of two mainstream individuals who show some evidence of 'intercultural personhood' and make identity claims comparable with 'ethnic' adapters are then developed through biographical method. Their life accounts are drawn on for the exploration of issues of identity and personhood within interpersonal, intercultural relations. Major focus is given to the social psychology of Harre (1983, 1993, 1998), whose work provided both a conceptualisation and a methodological tool for the problem. In Harre's work, three dimensions of personhood, namely consciousness, agency and biography are identified together with the psycho-social processes through which an individual's identity and orientation to their culture is appropriated, transformed and publicised. This publication is then rejected or incorporated into the culture through processes of conventionalisation. These four psycho-social processes are explored in my study through an adaptation of assisted biography method (De Waele & Harre, 1979). The strength of the psycho-social approach of Harre lies in its ability to get below the surface behaviours to an analysis of the theory of self which individuals, as 'singular' beings, bring into play in their interactions within themselves and with one another. While this approach draws on social contexts to support the transformations, it is not designed to explicate to a sufficient degree the conditions under which such theories of self are activated and within which changes in identity occur and are maintained. For this reason it is essential to incorporate a sociological framework to understand the influence of the conditions within which such experiences are played out. Bourdieu's (1984, 1987) cultural, relational sociology is coupled with Harre's (1983, 1993, 1998) theory of personal and social being in that it brings together the individual and the society in a way which proves fruitful for ongoing analysis of the biographical data collected within the communication and psycho-social framework of the earlier research. Bourdieu's critique of a methodology based on biography points to the 'illusion' that is created through a biographical interview process. Taking this critique of biography into the study of interpersonal, intercultural relations meant a shift from the communication interactions and psycho-social analysis undertaken to an analysis of the various social constructions evident within the elements of the life account and a search for the cognitive imprint of social structures as durable dispositions within the persons. These dispositions are evident from within a social trajectory of the life and they are applied to the intercultural encounters recounted by the participants in their autobiographies. The addition of Bourdieu's (1984, 1987) sociology strengthens the ability to view the individual and the society through a single lens and to position the individual life course as secondary within a broader and primary analysis of social structure and social structuring as a means of interpreting lives. Its weakness lies in the degree of 'voluntariness' brought into effect as individuals both chart their course through life and are pushed and pulled by the various social forces at work within their trajectories. Within the scope of this thesis, these two approaches, that is, a psychological and a sociological one, are illustrated and incorporated into an interdisciplinary model for the study of interpersonal, intercultural relations. Further rigorous research to validate the components and the relationships of the model and to investigate these strengths and weaknesses more thoroughly is foreshadowed. This interdisciplinary model of interpersonal, intercultural relations is the major contribution of this work to the field of intercultural communication. Advances which are achieved through use of psychology, sociology and biographical research method as a tool through this study are also identified. The thesis concludes with a review of the contributions of the thesis and a discussion of the implications for future research on interpersonal, intercultural relations.

Mina, Prokic. "Intercultural relations and family-school trust: immigrant and native families in schools of Barcelona". Doctoral thesis, Universitat Pompeu Fabra, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/668985.

Streszczenie:
The main aim of the thesis is to explain intercultural relations between immigrant and native families in the school context and how these reflect in their trust in local schools. For this purpose, I analyze the relationship between native and immigrant families and their relation to teachers, school staff and direction, considering school norms and the ways in which the differentiation between immigrant and natives takes place. I also look at what trust in schools means and how it is performed by native and immigrant families. For this purpose, I employ a theoretical framework that is situated at the intersection of the overlapping research between immigration studies and education. By linking the literature on intercultural relations and trust in schools, I develop my theoretical framework on the conditions that are important for enhancing school trust in an intercultural context. To obtain my data I use a qualitative methodology, semi-structured interviews and participant observation, for getting a richer picture of the settings and familiarizing with the ideas that are formed in the link between intercultural relations and trust in schools. The fieldwork is done in Barcelona where I interview native and immigrant parents as well as educational professionals in schools in two districts: Ciutat Vella and Sants-Montjuic.

This study set out to explore how multinational corporations incorporated the issue of culture into the planning process for crisis management. The research used a case study method with unstructured interviews conducted via email, phone and in person, and focused on the U.S. and Japan. Four of the interview subjects were established public relations professionals with experience in both countries, and one subject is a professor of intercultural communications in Japan. All interviews were transcribed and approved by the interview subjects before being analyzed and catalogued into themes. Those themes were then reviewed compared to the intercultural communications theoretical framework of power distance, high-context vs. low-context communications, and individualism vs. collectivism. Results revealed three main themes, including differences in PR between Japan and the United States, belief that culture should play a more substantial role in crisis communications, and actual use of culture in crisis communications. Responses showed that, regardless of a collective belief that culture should play a substantial role in crisis r;;- management, intercultural communication components often take over in emergencies. In conclusion, while all interview subjects saw value in cultural response, the broad scope of what that entails made it an impractical endeavor. Further, responses showed that the planning stage is not the most effective place to integrate culture into crisis communication. Research did suggest, however, that an updated PR model, adapted from the R.A.C.E. method, that incorporates elements of cultural communication consideration between the Action Planning and Communication stages could beneficial.

Streszczenie:
Largely developed as a professional occupation in the United States throughout the 20111 century, public relations now faces several changes and challenges as more American organizations venture onto the international landscape during the 21 st century. This study examined the evolution of public relations into an international practice, considering whether strategies and tactics are affected by cultural differences. The view that cultures can have an effect on the individual, communication processes and organizational practices is based on Hofstede's cultural dimensions. Palanca is a term used in Latin American societies, referring to the use of personal influence on one's behalf by relatives or friends. Guanxi, or personal connection, is a traditional practice of relationship marketing in the Chinese community. The literature review for the study examined the connection between cultural dimensions and this conceptualization of social networking in Latin America and China. The study investigated the effects of social networking on public relations practitioners in Latin America and China using a 15-item questionnaire conducted through email and telephone interviews. The analysis sought to determine how culturally-based social networking influences socialization, business practices, ethics and public relations strategies. The results for research question one indicated that palanca and guanxi were very similar in the cultural dimensions of individualism-collectivism and power distance; both are high collectivist and high power distance. They exhibited similarities related to uncertainty avoidance, though Latin America is high in uncertainty avoidance and China is medium. The two cultures differed along the dimensions of masculinity-femininity and long-term orientation. Research question two addressed business ethics related to culture. While practitioners did encounter ambiguous or unethical situations, their actions were largely dictated by the ethical standards and codes of their organizations. Research question three discussed public relations strategies and tactics. Public relations strategies were viewed as very similar to the U.S., regardless of where the respondents were based. Practitioners in both Latin America and China emphasized managing relationships as a vital component of public relations efforts. However, practitioners in China found media relations and the flow of communication to be underdeveloped in comparison to the U.S.

This research work focuses on the asymmetry of the intercultural exchanges within the partner relationships between the North and the South organizations. We particularly put emphasis on partner relationships between nongovernmental organizations and companies with a socio-economic vocation in France and in Senegal. The analysis of these partner relationships is done at three levels: on the partner, his logic and the cooperation situations. This relies on theoretical and conceptual models such as Weber’s (Weber M., 1964) comprehensive approach that emphasizes on rational actions, Boltanski’s, (Boltanski, 1990) normative action analysis model, Mauss’ (Mauss, 2007) reciprocal donation model, Joas’s (Joas H. , 1999) critical theory that highlights the creative nature that human actions have and Remy’s (Remy, 2005/1) social transaction theory. Partner relationships are then part of what could be tackled as a double issue of socio-historical transaction both structural and organisational. In fact, today’s partnerships between organizations are part of a much more global change taking into account the evolution of a permanently changing world. It thus arises on an evolution process of France-Senegal relationships. The analysis of new relationships and other partnership alternatives suggests a sociology of partner relationships that questions the today’s cooperation discourses and practices concerning structured and semi-structured intercultural exchanges. The analysis that we propose makes it possible to answer the following question: Do these relations follow a common sense of domination, reciprocity, fraternalism (Césaire, 1956) or asymmetry ?

The purpose of this research study was to analyze the success of the Peace Corps’ Municipal Development Program in its role as a change agent in the empowerment of rural Guatemalan women, and includes an exploration into the intercultural factors that may have affected the outcomes. I used my Peace Corps site of Santa Cruz El Chol, Guatemala as the case study for this research. I reviewed literature in five areas to use as a foundation to guide my research. This included literature regarding Guatemalan history and Guatemalan women’s issues, women’s empowerment in the international development context, Peace Corps, change agentry, and intercultural relations. I obtained data from four different groups. I interviewed a focus group of female leaders from El Chol, obtained questionnaires from 42 rural women from El Chol and its surrounding villages, interviewed three Peace Corps Guatemala staff members, and gathered surveys from 18 returned Peace Corps volunteers. Qualitative and quantitative data were gathered via open-ended questions, multiple-choice questions, and scale-based questions. An analysis of the findings revealed implications in three areas. The first area focused on Guatemalan women who are especially vulnerable to institutional and domestic violence, which leads to a lack of educational and economic opportunities and continues to prevent their empowerment. Next, the Peace Corps volunteers were generally satisfied with their service, but felt traits of Guatemalan society and culture prevented them from positively influencing women’s empowerment. Additionally, findings revealed that Peace Corps volunteers served as change agents in that they saw themselves and were seen by others as positive role models for the Guatemalan women with whom they worked. Finally, time management styles, differences in perception of gender roles, and direct versus indirect communication styles sometimes clashed to cause issues in U. S. American and Guatemalan abilities to work effectively together.

The purpose of this paper is to increase the understanding of how host-country language proficiency affects the ability of expatriates to manage business operations overseas. Therefore the relevant aspects of intercultural communication are identified, and then how these aspects are affected by a Swedish expatriate’s proficiency in the host-country language (Japanese) is examined. Subsequently, the effects of the identified aspects on the expatriate’s ability to manage business operations in the host country (Japan) is explored. Additionally, in order to achieve the purpose of this thesis, the following main research question will be answered: How does Japanese language proficiency affect the ability of Swedish expatriates’ to manage business operations in Japan? The literature review includes theories and findings of previous research related to intercultural communication, and what effect language proficiency has on the different aspects of intercultural communication. Furthermore, the literature review elaborates on the role of communication in business, with examples from previous studies on expatriates in Japan, finally ending in the conceptual framework used for this study. The methodology chapter explains the approach, method and design used for this study, as well as introducing the respondents chosen for this thesis. In the empirical findings the respondents’ responses are presented. This is followed by the analysis which includes a comparison of empirical data and literature and a discussion regarding similarities and differences. The analysis explains how language proficiency has a positive effect on the effectiveness of communication between the expatriates and their Japanese co-workers and business partners, as well as on building of trustful relationships, the ability to access information, and consequently work performance. The conclusions of this study are that language proficiency has a positive effect on intercultural communication and consequently on the expatriates’ ability to manage business operations, mainly in the form of trustful relationships, effective communication and access to information.

Streszczenie:
Since the 'Project of Accepting 100,000 Students from Abroad' was proposed by the Japanese government in 1983, the number of international students in Japan has increased dramatically to reach ten times the level of 23 years ago. Yet, despite the enhanced opportunities for international and local Japanese students to interact, there is evidence that meaningful intercultural interactions between the two groups have not taken place consistently (Hicks, 1988; Jou and Fukuda, 1995; Tanaka, et al., 1997). The aim of this research was to develop a better understanding of the process of intercultural relational development between international and Japanese students in a Japanese context. More specifically, the research aimed to identify elements which facilitate or inhibit the two groups' intercultural relational development over a period of time, the nature of socio-emotional challenges that are experienced along the way, and how these are interpreted by students themselves. Several interpersonal relationship theories, cross-cultural communication theory, and research on cross-cultural and intercultural relational development were reviewed to form the conceptual background of the research. In combination, they contributed to provide a holistic approach to studying the complex dynamic, interactive and reciprocal nature of intercultural relational development. Using naturalistic inquiry at a single site over a period of nine months, an empirical study investigated the intercultural relational development taking place among a small number of Australian and Japanese students who lived at the International House of a private Japanese university. Research methods included four semi-structured interviews with each participant, the use of various stimulus materials, including critical incidents to elicit multiple interpretations, as well as the researcher's continuous field observations. The study revealed some of the factors that facilitated and alternatively inhibited social interactions between the two groups, at different stages of their relational development. Students' spontaneous accounts of critical incidents, combined with their subjective interpretations of the same incidents provided insight into the socio-emotional challenges experienced by students in the process of intercultural relational development. Whereas most students' accounts and interpretations could be related to cultural background and experience, there was also evidence that some strategies for developing intercultural relationships as well as some interpretations of socio-emotional challenges were related to gender rather than cultural background. Unexpectedly, the research also found that social drinking was perceived by many students, across the two groups, as a facilitating factor at the early stage of intercultural development. Overall, the empirical study revealed that Japanese students experienced more socio-emotional challenges than Australian students. Differences in sense of humor and in perceived appropriateness of introducing conversational topics of a private nature were given special attention as these appeared to present major socio-emotional challenges for Japanese students. Both cultural background and gender seemed to have an impact on students' interpretations of these challenges. The thesis concludes with some suggestions for future research and for how intercultural learning between international students and host nationals could be enhanced in the Japanese context. Finally, the study makes a unique methodological contribution to research related to international students, through the use of a longitudinal design, a focus on situated experiences and socio-emotional challenges, and more generally, through a reciprocal approach to the study of intercultural relational development in the context of the internationalisation of higher education.

Streszczenie:

As the competition is increasing both nationally and globally, the companies are looking for new ways to decrease costs and gain innovation. The latest hot topic is Open innovation (OI), which can be seen as the ultimate limit in terms of accessible expertise, since it makes no difference in valuing an idea in terms of its origin. The trend is that companies are increasingly acknowledging the relevance of external resources, engaging in OI rather than relying exclusively on internal research and development (Chesborough, 2006). There are many types of supplier relations and innovation networks that the companies can take part in, but OI can be seen more as an approach and mindset that should determine how the companies act, whether it’s a question of being more open for ideas from another department, or even towards a competitor company. The companies are often using different types of collaborations and strategy and, potentially, trying to move up “the scale” towards OI.  With this thesis work I propose that there are many different aspects that the companies have to be aware of when moving up the scale from in-house development towards global OI. In reality, not many companies are taking the full advantage of OI, nonetheless knows the perquisites for doing so. OI may be the trend for development of companies, but today the nature of this is complex as companies are using different layers of the supplier and collaboration types in different parts of the organization. The success stories which Chesborough uses to exemplify the concept of OI do not address the grey area, or place on a scale, where many companies are situated in. This study will therefore explore the complexity in managing these collaborations that is not so present in the literature. How do you manage a collaboration that includes supplier relation, partnership and a want for OI at the same time? This means that there has to be a selection on which projects to collaborate with, as well as strategies for collaborating in a more innovative way and the steps that needs to be taken to get there.  In this thesis I am going to use this broad definition of innovation:

Innovation is the total set of activities leading to the introduction of something new, resulting in strengthening the defendable competitive advantage of a company. (van der Meer, 1996)

My partner company in this study is a global Telecom company (DU Technology) who would like to learn more about this and improve their collaboration with an Indian Service provider (ITC). These companies will be used as a case study to provide an example on how complex the movement towards OI can be, and what it demands from the companies to succeed. As the companies are working in a global context, I will also highlight the importance of an understanding for the cultural differences that affects collaboration and how to manage these when they are not a part of your own company.

Streszczenie:
The concept of cosmopolitics identifies a multispecies political practice within the framework of multinaturalism. The dissertation, "Multispecies Thinking from Alexander von Humboldt to Leslie Marmon Silko: Intercultural Communication Toward Cosmopolitics," is concerned with understandings of multispecies relationships, with the human intercultural communication that could prepare for a cosmopolitical practice, and with the ways Native American fiction supports this endeavor. This research draws from Native American literary studies and ecocritical scholarship to illustrate the potential of transdisciplinary thinking about multispecies ethnography, cosmopolitics, and Indigenous paradigms as providing a promising communication zone against the grain of scientific imperialism. It thus traces the development of pluralist and multispecies-oriented thought and its points of connection to Indigenous paradigms from Alexander von Humboldt's Cosmos Studies of the early 19th century to 21st century Indigenous cosmopolitics. First, this study discusses the insights and obstructions to Western pluralist and multispecies thinking in relation to Native American paradigms from Humboldt via 19th century nature writers-Henry David Thoreau, Margaret Fuller, and John Muir-to contemporary interdisciplinary research. Opening to wide potential with Humboldt's holistic Cosmos Studies, intercultural communication was tempered by the colonial enterprise in the 19th century United States, including a nature-culture dualism and the notion of degenerated, vanishing Indigenous peoples. The resulting conceptual understandings, terms, and attitudes have been influential until today and are what contemporary Native American authors and activists are confronted with when engaged in their work. Detailed textual analysis of exemplary Native American literature outlines how contemporary authors criticize, counter-narrate, and/or integrate Western intellectual traditions. Furthermore, this study outlines 20th and 21st century scientific concepts that refine much earlier ideas, provide helpful terminology regarding Western approaches to Indigenous ontologies and multispecies thinking, and facilitate a new, insightful reading of contemporary Native American fiction as cosmopolitical texts. The analyses of works by Louise Erdrich, Linda Hogan, Louis Owens, and Leslie Marmon Silko demonstrate the value of these works to enhance multispecies thinking and respective political practices. Therefore, Native American literature plays a major role worldwide as an educational and critical tool for an intercultural communication toward cosmopolitics.

Streszczenie:
This thesis examines a special kind of intercultural communication called interability communication, the interactions between the disabled and the abled. In-depth interviews were conducted with six Japanese men (average age 44.3 years), all of whom experienced the transition from being a member of the nondisabled majority to becoming a member of the disabled minority when they received spinal cord injuries in traffic accidents. The average length of time since the initial acquisition of disability was 25.7 years, and all of the men are now gainfully employed, living in the community, and report high levels of quality of life. This study shows that following their sudden acquisition of disability, the subjects developed new ways of interacting with both their physical and social environments. Their relationships with family and friends were altered. They developed new communication strategies for dealing with nondisabled people, especially centered on asking for help, and accepting or rejecting offers of help. Their cultural value orientations with regard to power distance, uncertainty avoidance, individualism-collectivism, and masculinity-femininity also underwent changes. This study shows that an understanding of these changes can help nondisabled people, including family members, friends, medical and rehabilitation specialists, etc. to interact more smoothly with disabled people. Although the sudden acquisition of disability is usually regarded as an extremely negative event, this study concludes that the six men have experienced positive growth. They have developed more ethnorelative worldviews, and they have successfully adapted to their disabilities. From the 164 pages of interview transcriptions, more than I 0 pages of direct quotations appear in this thesis in an attempt to accurately retell the stories of these six men.

The State Department conducts exchange programs for thousands of participants each year to build mutual understanding between the citizens of the United States and other countries. At the beginning of each program, inbound exchange students participate in pre-departure orientations to prepare them for their experiences in the United States. It is vital that these pre-departure orientation programs lay the groundwork for mutual understanding by fostering intercultural sensitivity and developing intercultural competence. For this study, I explored best practices for facilitating intercultural learning online among international students and designed an interactive, facilitated, student-centered, and culturally adapted virtual pre-departure orientation that promotes intercultural learning online. Experts evaluated this course plan and their feedback resulted in lessons learned and recommendations for the development phase of instructional design for this course plan.

China is the top sending country of international students to Western universities. Chinese students can benefit a country's economy and aid in internationalizing campuses, providing opportunities for students to develop global competencies. However, as the number of Chinese students is increasing, so is the awareness of their difficulties in acculturating to the Western system of higher education. The literature attributes some of these difficulties to cultural, academic, and social factors. Filling a gap in the research, this cross-level study compares the preparation programs of four different types of secondary institutions. Results of surveys and interviews were correlated between faculty and alumni evaluating satisfaction and effectiveness of university preparation. The students generally were satisfied with their preparation training as compared to the faculty at the secondary schools. Results of this study will help bridge the gap of eradicating the difficulties Chinese students face in the Western higher education system.

With the onset of tourism growth in the Dominican Republic, particularly in the province of Samana, a unique opportunity for exploration into intercultural interactions between Dominicans and tourists exists. This thesis brings together some of the current studies on intercultural communication in regards to the tourism industry, perceived community attitudes towards tourism, and host-guest relationships in the tourism context. Two groups of Dominicans were studied, those who worked in the tourism industry and those who did not, teachers, respectively. Data was extracted from collected questionnaires and interviews which revealed positive attitudes towards tourism, interest in expanding tourism, and various positive stereotypes towards tourists and about Dominicans themselves. In conclusion, the results were consistent with past research and include present recommendations on how to make the Dominican tourism sector even more receptive to the importance of intercultural communication.

Our study is focused on how the public sector can collaborate with the private sector on a certain issue. The public sector wanted to create a project to increase bicycling in the municipality of Kalmar. Our problem was to develop a sustainable way to collaborate between the two parties. We managed to present a suggestion on how the public sector with communication could improve their Public Relations with the private sector and therefore letting the parties benefit from their differences, thus making it possible to release synergy.Using semi-structured interviews and a workshop, we could clarify the values and attitudes of the parties to bring forth the core values to develop a shared vision. Where the identified differences were found, we used a dialog strategy based on intercultural conflict management as a communication tool. The result was exemplified with things that were expressed in the interviews, and we presented a framework on how to think when choosing the right type of collaboration model for the specified activity.

This research has as main objective to create moments of critical reflection with the researched group looking for the comprehension and discussion of the organization and use of the official correspondence genre - correspondência oficial ofício, an official document that is commonly received from non- indigenous institutions for kaiowá leaderships and teachers from T. I. Panambizinho. This study is based theoretically in the Socio-Historical- Cultural Activity Theory (Vygotsky, Leontiev, Engeström) and the discussions of Bakhtin about discourse genres; in Magalhães (2004), Liberali (2009), Kerbrat-Orechioni (2010), Brookfield & Preskill (2005), Smyth (1992) and Mackay (1980), in order to analyze the organizational pattern of language in the turn-taking in the discussions. The methodological orientation is anchored in the Critical Research of Collaboration, which points to the organization of language as dialogical and dialectic in the accomplishment of a joint work by the participants. As pointed out by Magalhães (2007a) it is about a methodology of intervention in the context of accomplishment of the research, with the objective to create spaces of joint construction for the understanding and transformation of senses attributed to the object under discussion and production of shared meanings. This study was carried out with leaderships and teachers of the Indigenous Land, Panambizinho, Dourados/MS. The data was collected/produced, through workshops of study, with focus in the reading and writing of the official correspondence genre, correspondência oficial ofício, that were recorded in audio and video. The focus of this dissertation is on the reading. The results had disclosed no initial understanding of the indigenous participants on the importance and use of the official correspondence ofício, in their relations with the non-indigenous institutions. It also revealed the collaborative production of meanings during the two days workshops, as well as the partial transformation of them, made possible by the construction of a collaborative interactional pattern, where all the participants shared the object of the activity and revealed themselves committed to participate in the discussions. The sharing of meanings, as to the understanding and use of the official correspondence ofício by kaiowá participants, will only be possible to be evidenced at the subsequent moment to the accomplishment of this research

Abstract: The objective of this dissertation is to analyze the constitution of a world music production and consumption scene in São Paulo (Brazil) by a network of musical groups and musicians dedicated to the practice of non-western and non-Brazilian musical instruments and languages. This network is formed both by groups that are specialized in specific musical cultures - which sound is largely classified as ethnic music - and groups with a generalist approach to music - which sound is classified as "encounter" or "fusion" of many musical cultures. The fieldwork that provides the observations and interpretations herein combines the assistance of the circuit of commercial performances and my participation in a choir destined to transnational. immigrants dwelling in São Paulo, as well as formal and informal interviews with musicians and musical producers. Through these observations I intend to clarify the logics of production and incorporation of "world musics" to local repertoires and how cultural diversity is used as a rationale of music-making

Streszczenie:
Corresponding to the rising threat of terrorism and heightened security concerns throughout Europe, potential parallel communities have come under increased scrutiny and pressure to engage and integrate in the politics and society of the country of settlement. Meanwhile, immigrants and the descendants of immigrants have lived in the countries of Western Europe for up to three and four generations. In this discussion, the tools of intercultural dialogue and citizenship have been proposed to bridge the ‘gap’ between ‘majority’ and ‘minority’ communities, permeating state practices from the national to the local level. This dissertation proposes to contribute to the field of International Relations by examining an often excluded space, that is, the local arena. Moreover, it expands the field in terms of giving attention to the role that youth play in international politics. Using a levels-of-analysis approach and a comparative case study method, comments from students, teachers, and parents in Berlin and London were analysed in keeping with a critical constructivist methodology. I found that, in spite of their different histories and immigration experiences, the perceptions of citizenship and intercultural dialogue have more in common than not. The main contributing factors to their experience appeared to be notions of belonging ingrained in the respective national imaginary in the context of globalization. In each case, the overlapping, intersecting experiences of minority youth cross-cut political and juridical boundaries. Far from being confined to a city district, the ramifications of these intersections are global in scale. From local participation to media culture, minority youth participate in an ongoing navigation of international issues in their day-to-day lives.

Streszczenie:
This study describes cultural values and communication styles that are attributable to Kenyans and U.S. Americans. It examines how Kenyans and U.S. Americans experience these different cultural values and communication styles and how they contribute to intercultural misunderstanding and conflict while working together in an office setting. Ten Kenyans and ten U.S. Americans who work or worked together in Nairobi, Kenya were interviewed and surveyed. The goal of the study was to explore and identify the experiences of the participants relative to the following values: individualism and collectivism; power distance; time orientation; high and low context; and universalism and particularism. The methodology used for this study included phone interviews and an extensive survey, which provided anecdotal evidence on how individuals experience and interpret the differences in these values. The interpretation of the data offers insights into significant intercultural differences between these two groups. The need for effective intercultural communication is an everyday reality in Nairobi, whether at the office, in the market, or on the street. Recommendations are offered for both Kenyans and U.S. Americans to work through and manage the differences to enhance productivity and satisfaction in the workplace. Ultimately the findings from this study will facilitate a rich discussion for human resources and training departments of similar organizations whether in Kenya or elsewhere.

Streszczenie:
Background: China is today regarded as Sweden’s most important business partner in Asia. Even if there are cultural differences between Sweden and China the intercultural distance has successively decreased. One of the reasons is the globalisation. Another reason is the consecutive development of Swedish-Chinese relations. The interpretation from common understanding has increased the level of trade between the nations. There is an on-going development of business co-operation between Sweden and China.  The Purpose: This Bachelor Thesis will examine the differences between the Swedish-Chinese business culture and how the cultural differences affect the Swedish B2B in China. The purpose is formulated by the basis of our main research questions; “How do Swedish B2B companies perceive the cultural differences between the Swedish and Chinese way of doing business?“ and “how do Swedish companies operating in China deal with business cultural diversity in China?”  Theoretical Framework: The basis of our Bachelor Thesis examines the theories within cultural dimension. The theoretical framework is based on proven studies from e.g. Hofstede’s Five Dimensions, Trompenaars Cultural Diversity, CVS, the GLOBE Study, Cross-Cultural- Communication & Adaptation and Guanxi.  Methodology: We have used an abductive approach with the basis of a qualitative research strategy. The primary data is gathered from six different case studies; Scania, Ludvig Svensson AB, Formox AB, Century 21, Business Sweden and Småland-China Support Office. The empirical findings will further be interpreted with the theoretical framework, analysed and we will finish up with our conclusion.  Conclusion: From the research examined we have identified a numerous of business cultural differences between Sweden and China. Even if the cultural barriers including communication, decision-making, co-operation, relations and business behaviour differs there are numerous of essential exploratory effort that can be initiated to prevent cultural misunderstandings and barriers.
The objective of this thesis is the study of the social history of Ceuta and Melilla, by means of the analysis of intercultural relationships. Overall, two mainstream communities will be analysed: a Spanish heritage community, mainly Catholic and a Moroccan heritage community of Muslin religion. Three approaches have been taken in order to study this social history: 1) a sociohistorical approach of the intercultural relationships between the two communities; 2) a socio-political approach to analyse identity, demographic data and nationalism; 3) a sociolinguistic approach for the analysis of stereotypes and the construction of identity, as well as linguistic and intercultural representations. Our research question is the following: how intercultural relationships in Ceuta and Melilla are constructed not only diachronically (historically) but also synchronically (today), at social, politic and linguistic levels?
