Pełny tekst źródłaStudying while being an elite athlete is a demanding challenge that student-athletes (SAs) try to meet. Each role, student and athlete, comes with demands that are likely to alter their mental health. In the sport-school dual career literature, the relationship between these roles has often been seen as conflicting, such that involvement in sport would be detrimental to school, and vice versa. However, other studies have shown that involvement in school can help to develop skills or knowledge that facilitate involvement or performance in sport, and vice versa. In other words, both roles are mutually enriched. In spite of these results, the majority of studies carried out among SAs have focused mainly on factors related to sport context, neglecting those specific to the dual career and their consequences on SAs’ mental health. Therefore, the stake of this doctoral dissertation was to better understand the interactions between the student and athlete roles and their relationships with the mental health of SAs, in order to answer the following question: How can we facilitate the management of sport-school dual careers to promote mental health among SAs? To this end, the aims were (1) to review studies on the relationships between role interactions and health in order to identify the knowledge and limitations of the literature, (2) to understand how SAs experience and reconcile their dual roles, (3) to identify and measure the interactions between these two roles, and (4) to examine the relationships between these role interactions and the mental health of SAs.First, a systematic review of the literature was conducted to determine how previous work has considered the interactions between the student and athlete roles, and the consequences on SAs’ health (Contribution 1). The first line of work was focused on the French the translation and validation of a tool that measures the salience of the academic and athletic identities of SAs, and on the examination of the additive and interactive relationships between these identities and athletic well-being (Contribution 2). Building on research on work-family interactions, we then considered the more proximal role of conflict and enrichment between the student and athlete roles in predicting well-being. Given the lack of tools to assess these constructs, we translated, adapted, and validated a scale from the work-family interactions literature, to measure negative and positive sport-school interactions (Contribution 3). Semi-structured interviews were conducted among SAs to test the relevance of this conceptualisation, by identifying the diversity of conflicts and enrichments that may exist in a dual career context (Contribution 4). Then, our work focused on the relationships between sport-school interactions and mental health. In a person-centred study, we identified latent profiles for sport-school interactions and examined their unique relationships with athletic well-being (Contribution 5). Finally, in a follow-up study carried out with SAs in training centres, we examined whether intra-individual weekly variations in sport-school conflicts and enrichments were related to weekly variations in athletic and academic well-being (Contribution 6).Overall, this doctoral work contributes to the understanding of factors related to SAs mental health of and offers promising perspectives for adaptations to facilitate the sport-school dual career and improve SAs’ mental health

Pełny tekst źródłaWhile the immune system is well known for its protective role against infectious pathogens, its role in cancer progression is more complex with some immune mechanisms being protective while others are detrimental. The primary physiological role of the brain is to perceive external physical and social conditions, assess their implications for organismal well-being and modulate the activity of internal physiological processes to optimally adapt to those external conditions. Immune and the nervous systems have long been considered to operate independently from each other, many preclinical and clinical studies have clearly demonstrated that these two systems interact and regulate each other. Despite more and more studies aim at investigating the interactions between the nervous and the immune systems, important issues remain to be elucidated. For example, while human studies have demonstrated a positive impact of well-being on cancer progression, the underlying molecular mechanisms have not been elucidated. On another topic, and while many investigators have investigated whether cytokines could be used as diagnosis or prognosis biomarkers is psychiatric diseases, none of the cytokine studied to date have proven to possess the sensitivity and specificity expected for an accepted diagnostic test value. During my PhD, I have worked on two different projects both related to the interactions between the nervous and the immune system. The goal of my first project was to elucidate the mechanisms by which enriched environment conductive to enhanced sensory, cognitive and motor stimulation impact metastatic progression in mice. We have found that mice housed in enriched environment were protected from lung metastasis. Protection was associated with lower serum corticosterone levels, increased lung inflammation following extravasation of circulating tumour cells, and rapid killing of early infiltrating tumour cells. Protection was abolished when inflammatory monocytes were deficient in glucocorticoid receptor signalling. Thus, while inflammatory monocytes have been shown to promote cancer progression, our results disclosed a novel anti-tumour mechanism whereby glucocorticoid receptor-dependent reprogramming of inflammatory monocytes can inhibit cancer metastasis. The goal of my second project was to identify immune-related biomarkers of remission in first-episode psychotic (FEP) patients. To this aim, we have taken advantage of our privileged access to clinical data and serum samples from 325 FEP patients who have all been treated with an atypical antipsychotic. We have first used a hierarchical unsupervised clustering approach to stratify 325 FEP patients into four subtypes based on their clinical symptoms. Compared to the rest of the cohort, one subtype (C1A) exhibited more severe positive and negative symptoms and were the most at risk of being non-remitters following treatment for 4 weeks. C1A patients also exhibited higher levels of several pro-inflammatory biomarkers therefore providing an external validation to our clustering approach. Most importantly, six biological variables (serum levels of IL-15, C reactive protein, CXCL-12, anti- cytomegalovirus and anti-Toxoplasma immunoglobulins) and two clinical variables (age, recreational drug use), predicted early remission following treatment with Amisulpride in C1A patients. Prediction accuracy assessed by cross-validation calculated by 10,000 iterations of 4-fold cross-validation was very good with a mean area under the curve (AUC) of 81.0% ± 0.05. Further validation of our results in future clinical trials would pave the way for the development of a blood-based assisted clinical decision support system for the choice of treatment in psychotic patients

Pełny tekst źródłaThis thesis aims to help better understand role conflicts experienced by female statutory auditors. These role conflicts and the way they are managed are analysed in a specific professional and relational context: that of interactions with the client. This thesis is presented in the form of a qualitative field study combining three methods of collecting data: non participative observations, semi-directed interviews and life history. Our sample includes female auditors working in Big 4 firms and medium or small sized firms, as well as male and female clients. It reveals six roles taken on by female auditors, including that of sexual object, absent from accounting research. Interactions with clients can reactivate role conflict experienced within the firms, generate new ones, inhibit or even suppress some of them. It identifies two inter-role conflicts arising from a co-construction of meaning between the female auditor and the client. It also reveals two kinds of role conflict management which are not mutually exclusive. The first is composed of six adaptative interactional tactics which reinforce an established order of gender and where women are both victims and agents of their condition. A typology of these adaptative interactional tactics is proposed. The second, which could be qualified as radical, comes from a deep questioning of the professional role defined by audit firms. It consists of a reinterpretation of the professional role of female auditors. It envisages the reconciliation of both masculine and feminine modes of interaction with the client. Differences in termes of conflict roles and role conflict management are identified between female auditors working in Big 4 firms and female auditors working in medium or small sized firms

Pełny tekst źródłaSince 80's, lots of behavioral studies demonstrated that motor representation participate to visual perception of biological motion or of its results. In the same time, with the discovery of mirror neuron system, another research field revealed that stimuli perception implying motion activate motor cortical region like primary motor cortex (M1). Although the combination between these two literatures is simple and allows us to speculate on the direct role of M1 on visual perception of motion implied stimuli, this relationship remain to be directly tested. To investigate the functional role of M1 in visual perception, we used a dual-task paradigm (perceptual and motor task) in order to manipulate the level of activation of M1. Consequences of this manipulation on visual perception of graphic traces were measured both at behavioral (studies 1 and 2) and neurophysiological levels (studies 3 and 4). Behavioral studies revealed that during the visual discrimination task of graphic traces, the discrimination sensitivity evolved as function of two parameters: participants own motor preferences in production of graphic traces, but also M1 "availability" during perceptual task. Neurophysiological studies manage to highlight that the level of M1 activity during visual observation of letter is related to the motor familiarity of the letter observed. Moreover, thanks to the motor familiarity concept, we revealed that the M1 activity impacts visual processing of letter. This impact occurs around at 300 ms after letter presentation. Together, these results give strong evidence of the involvement of M1 in visual processing of graphic traces

Pełny tekst źródłaThe analysis of child socialization and constraints relating to the construction of gender within groups of boys and girls offers a new perspective on the plurality of gender patterns, often presented in a binary way. This thesis analyses the body socialization of girls and boys aged between 9 and 12. We analyse their bodily practices as "field observation" of the socialization process and we have focused more specifically on the role of physical activity and the role of "work of the appearance" on gender construction, and the process of incorporation. The demonstration is based on qualitative ethnographic data from a school survey, observations in sport contexts and a series of interviews with children, families and adults (teachers, sports instructors). The study has identified different "gender regimes" (Connell, 1987) in sports contexts and a several affinity groups in school. The joint effects of three instances of socialization (associative sport, school and family) are taken into account to explain the variability and the hierarchy of the identified models of masculinities and femininities

Pełny tekst źródłaIn 2007, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified "shift work leading to a disruption of circadian rhythm» as probably carcinogenic to humans (Group 2A) on the basis of sufficient evidence in animals but limited evidence in humans. To date, few studies have focused on the role of night work and clock genes in prostate cancer occurrence. In this context, we studied the role of night work, circadian genes and their interactions in prostate cancer risk, using data from EPICAP, a population-based case-control study, including 819 cases and 879 controls. A standardized questionnaire was used to collect detailed information on both fixed and rotating night work. Biological samples were also collected for DNA genotyping and for prostate cancer-clock genes association study. Overall, we did not find an association between night work and prostate cancer whatever the disease aggressiveness, while we observed an increased risk in men with an evening chronotype. At least 20 years of exposure to fixed night work was associated with aggressive prostate cancer and this was more stricken in combination with long nights (on average more than 10 hours per night shift) or more than 6 consecutive night shifts. We observed a significant association with prostate cancer for the clock genes NPAS2 and PER1, while only RORA was significant for aggressive cancers. We found significant interaction between clock genes and night work in the risk of prostate cancer for RBX1, CRY1, NPAS2 and PRKAG2. Our results provide support for the hypothesis that night work disrupting circadian rhythm could be associated with prostate cancer and they also provide new evidence of a potential link between clock genes variants and prostate cancer. These results may particularly contribute to the identification of new prostate cancer risk factors that could be modifiable and available for prevention. Further studies are warranted to better understand the biological mechanisms involving circadian genes in the development of prostate cancer and their interactions with night work

Pełny tekst źródłaCoeducation is often considered an ideal way to foster equality between girls and boys. Although, in theory, various institutional initiatives encouraging coeducation have contributed to fostering equal rights, they do not always lead to equal opportunities in practice. This study focuses on the tangible aspects of coeducation at secondary school level in the specific fields of physical education (PE) and sport, where some inequality between girls and boys is still often considered ―normal‖. Countering this preconceived notion, the thesis demonstrates that whilst coeducation does not initially stand in the way of greater gender equality, the educational strategies that may be associated with it are likely to put some girls at a disadvantage. In terms of methodology, the research is based on a combination of several studies, including ethnographic observation of 200 teaching hours; some twenty interviews with PE and sports teachers; and secondary analysis of two national surveys based on questionnaires completed by 1,954 secondary school pupils and 1,317 secondary school teachers. The study shows, among other things, that the type of group activity and educational content chosen (which is often male-oriented), as well as the way teachers and pupils interact, are all factors that are likely to promote disparities in the way girls and boys are treated. Finally, the work underlines that teaching PE and sport in a coeducational environment cannot be done without careful consideration of the differences between girls and boys, and the development of educational strategies that take these differences into account (be they biological or cultural)
