Streszczenie:
With the emergence of advanced integrated services networks, the need for effective performance analysis techniques has become extremely important. Further advancements in these networks can only be possible if the practical performance issues of the existing networks are clearly understood. This thesis is concerned with the design and development of a measurement system which has been implemented on a large experimental network. The measurement system is based on dedicated traffic generators which have been designed and implemented on the Project Unison network. The Unison project is a multisite networking experiment for conducting research into the interconnection and interworking of local area network based multi-media application systems. The traffic generators were first developed for the Cambridge Ring based Unison network. Once their usefulness and effectiveness was proven, high performance traffic generators using transputer technology were built for the Cambridge Fast Ring based Unison network. The measurement system is capable of measuring the conventional performance parameters such as throughput and packet delay, and is able to characterise the operational performance of network bridging components under various loading conditions. In particular, the measurement system has been used in a 'measure and tune' fashion in order to improve the performance of a complex bridging device. Accurate measurement of packet delay in wide area networks is a recognised problem. The problem is associated with the synchronisation of the clocks between the distant machines. A chronological timestamping technique has been introduced in which the clocks are synchronised using a broadcast synchronisation technique. Rugby time clock receivers have been interfaced to each generator for the purpose of synchronisation. In order to design network applications, an accurate knowledge of the expected network performance under different loading conditions is essential. Using the measurement system, this has been achieved by examining the network characteristics at the network/user interface. Also, the generators are capable of emulating a variety of application traffic which can be injected into the network along with the traffic from real applications, thus enabling user oriented performance parameters to be evaluated in a mixed traffic environment. A number of performance measurement experiments have been conducted using the measurement system. Experimental results obtained from the Unison network serve to emphasise the power and effectiveness of the measurement methodology.

Streszczenie:
The motivation behind this thesis is to develop a procedure for internetworking the Defense Data Network (DDN) with an Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN). To accomplish this internetworking problem an integrated gateway must be designed to compensate for incompatibilities between the two networks. This thesis approaches this problem by giving a description of the two networks, DDN and ISDN, and also presenting a general approach to gateway design. This information is then combined into a detailed procedure for implementing a gateway to internetwork the DDN and ISDN. This is followed by a discussion of the practical aspects of the DDN/ISDN internetworking problem.

Streszczenie:
In this dissertation research, we design and analyze integrated mobility and service manage- ment for network cost minimization in Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs). We first investigate the problem of mobility management in WMNs for which we propose two efficient per-user mobility management schemes based on pointer forwarding, and then a third one that integrates routing- based location update and pointer forwarding for further performance improvement. We further study integrated mobility and service management for which we propose protocols that support efficient mobile data access services with cache consistency management, and mobile multicast services. We also investigate reliable and secure integrated mobility and service man- agement in WMNs, and apply the idea to the design of a protocol for secure and reliable mobile multicast. The most salient feature of our protocols is that they are optimal on a per-user basis (or on a per-group basis for mobile multicast), that is, the overall network communication cost incurred is minimized for each individual user (or group). Per-user based optimization is critical because mobile users normally have vastly different mobility and service characteristics. Thus, the overall cost saving due to per-user based optimization is cumulatively significant with an increasing mobile user population. To evaluate the performance of our proposed protocols, we develop mathematical models and computational procedures used to compute the network communication cost incurred and build simulation systems for validating the results obtained from analytical modeling. We identify optimal design settings under which the network cost is minimized for our mobility and service management protocols in WMNs. Intensive comparative performance studies are carried out to compare our protocols with existing work in the literature. The results show that our protocols significantly outperform existing protocols under identical environmental and operational settings. We extend the design notion of integrated mobility and service management for cost minimiza- tion to MANETs and propose a scalable dual-region mobility management scheme for location- based routing. The basic design concept is to use local regions to complement home regions and have mobile nodes in the home region of a mobile node serve as location servers for that node. We develop a mathematical model to derive the optimal home region size and local region size under which overall network cost incurred is minimized. Through a comparative performance study, we show that dual-region mobility management outperforms existing mobility management schemes based on static home regions.

Streszczenie:
The integration of multimedia applications into future wireless networks is expected to accelerate the demand for incorporating broadband infrastructure into wireless arena. Providing an efficient broadband wireless infrastructure capable to carry a mixture of different services brings a large set of new technical challenges. The current wireless networks that have been designed to carry low bit-rate voice and data are not able to carry bandwidth consuming and delay sensitive multimedia traffic. Consequently fundamental changes at different layers of current technology used in wireless networks are required. In this thesis we focus on Medium Access Control protocols (MAC) suitable for broadband wireless networks. Wireless ATM (WATM) has been considered in this work. This is mainly because it is widely accepted that ATM is the foundation of future broadband networks and integrating ATM into wireless networks provides a seamless interface between wired and wireless environments. We investigate the major recent proposals for MAC protocols for broadband wireless networks and propose a new reservation mechanism for the reservation part of a FDD-based MAC protocol. This novel mechanism is called “Dynamic Hybrid Partitioning with Adjustable Repeat” which helps to improve the performance of the Variable Bit Rate (VBR) voice traffic in a broadband wireless network with integrated traffic. Through a number of simulation experiments based on AKAROA2 [Ewi99J, we analyze the different aspects of our proposed mechanism and show how it improves the performance of the VBR voice traffic sources in a network with different classes of traffic.

Streszczenie:
Chapter One introduces the concept of Integrated Services Digital Networks (ISDN). A brief outline of the integration of voice and data services is given, indicating the different characteristics of these two services. Evolution from the existing telephone networks towards the full ISDN is mentioned, emphasizing the transition from analog to all digital in the transmission facilities. The ISDN emphasizing and customer access are discussed together with the access protocol architecture. Chapter Two surveys the modelling and evaluation techniques in the study of communication and computer systems. These include the analytical, simulation and direct measurement methods. Common approaches to model queueing systems are described, with particular interest in the modelling of multiple classes priority queues. Event-oriented simulation methodology is presented, including techniques to establish the credibility of the simulation models. Chapter Three describes the access protocols that are suitable for the ISDN. Queueing and simulation models, based on the approaches mentioned in Chapter Two, are used in the performance studies and numerical comparisons. In particular, the pre-emptive access procedures are suggested as alternatives to improve the signalling delay. Chapter Four derives an appropriate queueing model for the analysis of the 95 percentile of the s-delay in ISDN, from which the Laplace Transform of the s-delay is obtained. Inversion of the Laplace Transform can only be obtained by using numerical methods. Comparison with simulation results is made to validate the queueing model. Chapter Five presents a new access protocol based on the packet-switching technology. Each station is assumed to generate messages consisting of an arbitrarily distributed, random number of fixed size packets. The channel is time-slotted with a slot time equal to a packet transmission time. The protocol ensures that an ongoing message transmission can not be preempted by any messages of the same class, but can be pre-empted at the beginning of the next slot by a higher priority message. Study of this protocol is based on simulation and analytical techniques. From the mean signalling delay formula derived, the optimal packet size is obtained. With the optimal packet size, the performance of the mean signalling delay of the Packet Switching protocol is found to be as good as those preemptive ones. Comparisons between various priority protocols are presented to indicate the delay-throughput characteristics among them. Chapter Six discusses the fairness of the access protocols in ISDN. The fairness measure is according to the average end-to-end message delay for each station. This issue is studied through the design aspects of the scheduling disciplines. A Random Number Prefix scheme is proposed to improve the fairness measure. Chapter Seven summarises the major conclusions reached from the investigations. Further researches are suggested and discussed.

Streszczenie:
Dynamic bandwidth allocation plays an important role in integrated services networks. Effective bandwidth management can improve the overall performance of the network significantly. In integrated services networks, different types of traffic coexist. To serve these different types of traffic satisfactorily, hybrid switching is commonly used. Hybrid switching is an integration of circuit switching and packet switching in the same network. In this thesis, dynamic bandwidth allocation is studied to provide satisfactory hybrid switching performance. Specifically, we will study how to allocate bandwidths for continuous bit rate (CBR) traffic served by circuit switching and variable bit rate traffic (VBR) served by packet switching. The performance measure is based on the blocking probability of CBR traffic and the time delay of VBR traffic. Therefore, the objective of the dynamic bandwidth allocation is to maintain balance between blocking probability and delay under various traffic conditions. To accomplish this, the dynamic bandwidth allocation algorithms consists of traffic intensity estimation, traffic performance prediction, and performance optimization. A simulation is written to demonstrate the algorithm for various traffic scenarios.

Streszczenie:
This dissertation is concerned with the design of a high speed fiber optic campus backbone network which not only provides a high bandwidth connection to various LANs, PBXs, ISDNs, supercomputers, and other high speed computing facilities but also offers an integrated service of voice and data. The campus backbone network is based on an optical fiber dual ring structure. A new token ring protocol based on the IEEE 802.5 standard is proposed as the medium access protocol for the backbone network. In the proposed token ring network, the token holder transmits packets in an exhaustive way when no other nodes want to transmit voice packets. If any node has voice packets waiting for transmission, the token holder can transmit only a single packet during its access opportunity. In this way, not only can the voice delay be bounded at high voice traffic intensities, but a high data throughput can be achieved at low voice traffic intensities. The potential use of Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) was also considered, but the TDM technique was found to be less suitable for our campus environment mainly due to its low efficiency in bursty environments and complex hardware requirements. The backbone network was simulated using the Simscript II.5 discrete event simulation language. The simulation results indicated that the proposed token ring protocol provides satisfactory performances in every respect. A network interface unit (NIU) was designed, which consists of optical transmitter, receiver, and fault tolerance mechanisms as well as the protocol engine. The optimal values of major parameters for the NIU design were determined by the simulation.

Streszczenie:
The focus of this dissertation is the development of resource management schemes for integrated networks, with the major contributions being: (i) the development of an optimal adaptive buffer management scheme for the packet-switched subsystem, (ii) the integration of a moveable-boundary hybrid switching scheme with the time assigned speech interpolation technique for implementing a congestion control mechanism for the packet-switched subsystem, and (iii) the development of an adaptive hierarchical scheme for implementing the access control and routing functions within the circuit-switched subsystem. The problem of buffer management at an integrated network node is formulated as a nonlinear programming problem with a convex objective function and an interative solution technique with fast convergence is proposed for a real-time implementation of the buffer management scheme in practical environments. In order to exercise an additional degree of control over the packet-blocking probability at each hybrid-switched link within the network, a new multiplexing scheme based on the integration of the moveable-boundary hybrid switching scheme and the time assigned speech interpolation technique is presented in this dissertation. The tradeoff between the corresponding decrease in the packet blocking probability and the increase in the circuit freezeout fraction is demonstrated by a detailed queueing analysis of the multiplexer. Specific algorithms are also presented in this dissertation for the solution of the access control and routing problems within the circuit-switched subsystem. In particular, an access control scheme is developed by solving an integer programming problem formulated using the policy of complete partitioning of the available bandwidth among the competing user classes. As an alternative to the completely partitioned approach, the problem of traffic routing is considered in a network that supports homogeneous traffic classes based on the policy of complete sharing. Finally, for the general case of networks with heterogeneous traffic classes, a hierarchical scheme is developed for the implementation of the access control and the routing functions at two functional levels, where the access control is implemented by the network supervisor who solves an appropriate linear integer programming problem periodically, and the routing function is handled by the individual nodes of the network on a distributed basis. Thesis (MTech (Information Technology))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2016.
The aim of this research is to identify and explore the factors affecting information security compliance of information security policies and regulations, in a financial services organisation. The organisation has to comply with information security regulations and legislations by righteousness of its operations in light of the fact that any wrong doing together with misuse of data, are continually expanding. Corporate embarrassments comes about due to rupture of security, results in expanded thoughtfulness regarding corporate consistency. Legislature and policies have been set up to counter information security issues. This legislature and policies are not adequately addressing the compliance issues that arise, but are needed within organisations. Compliance targets are not met due to inconsistent guidelines that turns out to be significant in diminishing the financial position, reputation and security of information. This research further aims to explore whether employees comply with laws and regulations regarding information in an organisation. This is done in order to confirm whether governance and human factors play any significant part in compliance. The research is an exploratory study and specifically analyses the governance function and which stakeholders influence its operations in information compliance. The research investigates certain questions on organisational culture and the human factor, do influence employee’s compliance to laws and regulations. The objectives of the research are to investigate which factors, and how such factors influence compliance of information security policies and compliance with the goal of designing an integrated framework to assist in counteracting these findings. The research is underpinned by the Neo-institutional theory, Agency Theory and Rational choice theory. The Denison organisational cultural model and a framework proposed by von Solms are used as lenses to interpret the data of the research.

Streszczenie:
A structured organisation of tasks, possibly hierarchical, is necessary in a BISDN network due to the complexity of the system, its large dimension and its physical distribution in space. Feedback (possibly supplemented by feedforward) control has an essential role in the effective and efficient control of BISDN. Additionally, due to the nonstationarity of the network and its complexity, a number of different (dynamic) modelling techniques are required at each level of the hierarchy. Also, to increase the efficiency of the network and allow flexibility in the control actions (by extending the control horizon) the (dynamic) tradeoff between service-rate, buffer-space, cell-delay and cell-loss must be exploited. In this thesis we take account of the above and solve three essential control problems, required for the effective control of BISDN. These solutions are suitable for both stationary and nonstationary conditions. Also, they are suitable for implementation in a decentralised coordinated form, that can form a part of a hierarchical organisation of control tasks. Thus, the control schemes aim for global solutions, yet they are not limited by the propagation delay, which can be high in comparison to the dynamics of the controlled events. Specifically, novel control approaches to the problems of Connection Admission Control (CAC), flow control and service-rate control are developed. We make use of adaptive feedback and adaptive feedforward control methodologies to solve the combined CAC and flow control problem. Using a novel control concept, based on only two groups of traffic (the controllable and uncontrollable group) we formulate a problem aimed at high (unity) utilisation of resources while maintaining quality of service at prescribed levels. Using certain assumptions we have proven that in the long term the regulator is stable and that it converges to zero regulation error. Bounds on operating conditions are also derived, and using simulation we show that high utilisation can be achieved as suggested by the theory, together with robustness for unforeseen traffic connections and disconnections. Even with such a high efficiency and strong properties on the quality of service provided, the only traffic descriptor required from the user is that of the peak rate of the uncontrollable traffic. A novel scheme for the dynamic control of service-rate is formulated, using feedback from the network queues. We use a unified dynamic fluid flow equation to describe the virtual path (VP) and hence formulate two illustrative examples for the control of service-rate (at the VP level). One is a nonlinear optimal multilevel implementation, that features a coordinated decentralised solution. The other is a single level implementation that turns out to be computationally complex. Therefore, for the single level implementation the costate equilibrium solution is also derived. For the optimal policies derived, we discuss their implementation complexity and provide implementable solutions. Their performance is evaluated using simulation. Additionally, using an ad hoc approach we have extended previous published works on the decentralised coordinated control of large scale nonlinear systems to also deal with time-delayed systems.

Priority schemes employing the inherent properties of carrier-sense multiple-access (CSMA) schemes are investigated and then applied to the integrated transmission of voice and data. A priority scheme composed of 1-persistent and non-persistent CSMA protocols is proposed. The throughput and delay characteristics of this protocol are evaluated by mathematical analysis and simulation, respectively. The approach of throughput analysis is further extended to another more general case, p-persistent CSMA with two persistency factors, the throughput performance of which had not been analyzed before. Simulations are carried out to study the delay characteristics of this protocol. After careful consideration of the features of the priority schemes studied, two protocols are proposed for integrated voice and data transmission. While their ultimate purpose is for integrated services, they have different application. One of them is applied to local area network; the other is suitable for packet radio network. The distinctive features of the former are simplicity and flexibility. The latter is different from other studies in that collision detection is not required, and that it has small mean and variance of voice packet delay. Performance characteristics of both of these protocols are examined by simulations under various system parameter values.
