Streszczenie:
The presented study reveals the theoretical prerequisites for the expediency of applying personally oriented and pragmatic approaches to the integrated learning of English for special purposes, in particular, when studying the learner needs of future journalists. The necessity to explore the specific learner needs in the field of professionally oriented English communication (POEC) of future journalists is determined by the requirement to adapt the language policy in higher education institutions in accordance with the demands for interrelated vocational and professional English language training of a future specialist. The formation of the secondary professional English-speaking personality of a future journalist depends on support of communicative interaction in English at classes; strengthening of conscious language learning; providing the journalism contextualized input; integrated development of POEC skills; compliance with the social and cultural norms of English-language communication in the professional field of journalism and the development of intercultural tolerance. Understanding of the specifics of the POEC is facilitated by the involvement of linguistic and social categories of pragmatics in the context of foreign language learning, especially in the integrated learning of English for the special purposes (ESP) of future journalists, where the social dimension is equally significant as the cognitive one. Based on the consideration of the concept of learner needs and description of the main types, a questionnaire was drawn up for the analysis of the specific learner needs of future journalists in ESP. The questions relate to the objective and subjective educational needs, shed light on the peculiarities of students' perception of the necessity to develop English proficiency for successful journalism career, the frequency of performing specific types of job-related activities at ESP classes, awareness of preferred style, channel and medium of communication, and as well as pragmatic functions of journalist's speech. Levels of English language proficiency and knowledge of journalism terminology are taken into account, as well as the main challenges of learning and the relevance of the possibility of formation of particular skills of POEC within the traditional and integrated ESP.

This article explores how work-integrated learning (WIL) reporting projects, spanning eight years, enabled authentic learning by journalism students and also provided a valued community service. Students at a regional Australian university interviewed the mayoral and councillor candidates for each of the four-yearly local government area elections from 2008 to 2016 and published their stories online at https://radiojournalismonline.com . This article concludes that a WIL approach to teaching journalism creates an immediate, positive impact on the reputations of student journalists and that the goodwill also extends to their university. The local community sees the student journalists’ coverage of the local elections as a public service. Based on the public’s feedback, voters and candidates alike believed that they were provided with reliable and actionable information.

Data analysis has always been an integral part of journalism but combining it with technology was a novelty for newspapers. Journalism’s combination with technology was an innovation because of processing, interpretation, and visualization of large datasets in a journalistic content. In recent years, newspapers have started to adapt data journalism and integrated it to sports for better storytelling and making sports more understandable for readers. This research aims to analyse sports data journalism practices in Spain with a quantitative approach with content analysis of 1068 data journalism articles published by 6 newspapers (Marca, Mundo Deportivo, AS, El Mundo, El Periódico, El Pais) between 2017-2019. Quantitative analysis focuses on how sports data journalism is being adapted in Spain, technical features of articles, and the similarities and differences between sports and national newspapers to identify integration of sports data journalism.

Streszczenie:
News media coverage of Indigenous Australian peoples and perspectives is often absent or, when present, unfair or shallow in context or understanding. This raises the question of how much ‐ and what kind of ‐ exposure to Indigenous knowledges and perspectives journalists-in-training receive in their university studies. To find out, this study analyses 30 unit outlines and assessment details of journalism subjects at three Australian universities. It follows this analysis with interviews of seventeen undergraduate journalism students at these universities to explore their perceptions of if and how their journalism programmes paid attention to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander topics and perspectives in the classroom setting. The results reveal that the journalism students in this sample, even those from the same university, had an uneven experience related to Indigenous knowledges and perspectives in their university journalism subjects. This testifies to the generic nature of unit outlines and learning objectives and to the broad discretionary power that individual tutors and lecturers have to shape the flow of information that is engaged with during the learning opportunities they oversee. Student recommendations for how Indigenous knowledges and perspectives could be more usefully integrated into journalism education were also gathered and reported.

Journalism in higher education must find new ways of producing work-ready graduates who are prepared for the rapidly changing news media environment. Traditional internships are under increasing scrutiny over their quality and equitability. The past few years have seen a number of innovative models of work-integrated learning (WIL) emerging in journalism education. This article considers Event WIL as a model of university-led WIL in journalism education that brings academia and industry together in partnership to build the capacity of all student journalists to work in a dynamic media landscape. This article makes an argument for Event WIL as a model of WIL in journalism education by drawing on a case study of the Griffith University Commonwealth Games Media Centre at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in 2018. This case study provides insights into the key tenets of Event WIL: long-term preparation, harnessing pre-event WIL experiences, providing in-depth induction, establishing a hybrid space for a partnership between industry and academia and creating authentic opportunities for student publication are detailed. Notably, the WIL case study not only resulted in quality outcomes for students, but it also resulted in benefits for academics and industry representatives.

Streszczenie:
This exegesis reports on nine case studies of university-led work-integrated learning (WIL) in journalism at Griffith University (GU), undertaken from 2014–2018. While WIL has a relatively long history in journalism education in terms of internships and cadetships, they have some limitations in terms of access and equity. Students may lack the capacity to fulfil the requirements of internships because of disadvantage, the number of available placements may be limited and/or students may have varied experiences with placements. This exegesis enunciates the varied dimensions and faces of a ‘wise practice’ approach to university-led WIL in journalism education and addresses the central research questions: What are the dimensions of inclusive, quality WIL and what are the challenges to its implementation? To address these questions, I draw on data from participant observation as well as from interviews and focus groups with students, academics and industry partners. Each set of data formed a case study. This multiple case study analysis has led me to identify three distinct yet interrelated models of university-led WIL in journalism education – I have called these Flipped WIL, Event WIL and Purpose WIL. The development and delivery of each of the case studies were informed by the teaching philosophy of university-led WIL as wise practice, which emphasises context, diversity, inclusion and community. University-led WIL occurs within a hybridised space created within a university context outside the internship/placement model. Students obtain practical experience, usually in conjunction with a professional organisation, and this goes beyond simply providing ‘scholarly problematizing by students of their practice experiences’ (Cooper and Orrell, 2016, p. 111). The Flipped WIL case studies comprised scaffolded, practice-based units culminating in a capstone unit. Student learning occurred through working as, and alongside, industry in a specially configured, university-based multimedia newsroom. In contrast, the Event WIL case studies involved students working collaboratively with industry at specific newsworthy events – the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Brisbane, the Blues on Broadbeach annual music festival on the Gold Coast and the 2018 Commonwealth Games, also on the Gold Coast. The Purpose WIL case studies engaged with the community around the social issues of domestic violence, refugee mental health and disability, with a social justice focus. Each model involved students producing relevant multimedia news stories for an authentic news outlet, and building skills in analysis, critique, creativity and innovation. The models allowed students enrolled in on-campus journalism programs to be prepared for employment in an evolving and challenging media landscape because they provided equivalent access to what Billett (2002, p. 29) refers to as ‘affordances’, that is, the workplace’s ‘readiness to afford opportunities for individuals to engage in work activities’, and ‘engagement’, that is, the ‘degree by which individuals wish to engage purposefully in the workplace’. The affordances offered by industry workplaces were incorporated into the hybrid space created by the university-led model described, and were enabled and enhanced to produce inclusive, quality WIL when five key dimensions were invoked. These are that the WIL experience is university-led, undertaken in a hybrid space, embedded in community and sustainable, and recognises and encourages student agency. There are, however, challenges to implementing inclusive, quality WIL, including with online students, access issues, high academic workloads and a student and industry perception about a lack of legitimacy for WIL experiences within the university context. This project sets out to provide a timely, engaging, robust and reflexive analysis of the development and objectives of the Wise Practice Work-integrated learning model in journalism education. Illustrated by the nine case studies, this model has potential to serve as a template for other institutions while contributing to journalism pedagogy in Australia. The implications of the WIL model discussed here, through the testing and analysis of the Flipped WIL model, the Event model and the Purpose WIL model, will form the basis for future projects and/or the adoption of similar models elsewhere.

The development of digital networks has allowed the largest news media organisations to consolidate and centralise their publishing businesses in flourishing capital-city markets. This has resulted in a withdrawal from other less-viable markets, especially those which are geographically remote, and the subsequent emergence of the 'digital divide' with its attendant negative effects. This thesis proposes that the combination of technologies, theories and processes which has brought about the 'digital divide' can now be realigned to reverse those negative effects, and to enhance the possibility of focussed participatory communication taking place within and between those previously less-viable markets. This enhanced participatory communication - which I have named 'integrated journalism' - brings with it measurable and positive effects, generally known as community capacity building effects, which lead to better outcomes for the members of enhanced communities, a more innovative and flourishing approach to life and business, and a more innovative and forward-looking atmosphere within enhanced communities. Two new models are devised and presented: the first allows members of audience communities to learn and implement the process of publishing a community newspaper under the tuition of an experienced journalist; the second enables both journalists and audience members to measure and direct the effects of news publication within communities.

The journalistic profession is facing a time of change, experimentation and innovation. In today’s world, one of the principle driving forces behind these changes in the media is newsrooms convergence. Those involved in the teaching of journalism have to face the challenge of adapting its curriculum to these new dynamics. Are these readjustments being carried out? This research will construct a solid theoretical framework concerning the meaning of convergence and the training of a fully integrated journalist. In this thesis we analyse how this newsroom integration and media convergence is being taught within Journalism faculties in Spain. In addition a study case will be highlighted: the “Taller Integrat de Periodisme” from Pompeu Fabra University.
The aim of this thesis is to examine and interpret the sophisticated composition of Rodrigo Fresán’s “house of books” or “intertextual series”. Our research will demonstrate that the nine books of the Argentinean writer, in spite of their different generic classifications and their significant thematic diversity, form a coherent whole and they cannot be therefore analyzed separately. The continuity, the logic and, most importantly, the systematic nature of this literary project, that unites all the books of the author in an original and fractal intertextual series “in progress”, will be showed. Considering the fact that this work is characterized by a generic hybridity and a tension between the unification and discontinuity techniques, the processes of literary integration and atomization utilized in the integrated story collections and in the novels of the author will be presented. Then, a repetition and variation principle will be investigated as a main construction strategy of this continuum. Many fields of application of the repetition/variation mechanisms on various levels of the series will be explored. Our study will be concentrated mostly on the narrative structures, the metafictional dimension, the generic hybridity and the extraliterary models of the Fresán’s books, that is, his musical, pictorial, photographic, film, scientific and religious inspirations

The appearance of the Web 2.0 as introduced tolls in the digital environment that allowed internet users to share contents - image, video and audio - in real time and all around the world. These changes prompted a turn over in the communicative spectrum and the way we nowadays communicate. As so, and seen that organizations are built by people, they were confronted by the need to also change. Therefore, it is wise to question the way that communication is shaped among the organizations and, more specifically, how nowadays the press office functions. Based in an experience of a curricular internship in a press office company that lasted 3 months - Central de Informação, at Oporto -, the goal was to analyze the way consultants use Web 2.0’s new tolls, specially social network. Internet is not just another society’s mean of communication, but it rather assumes itself as a revolutionary of communication amongst people, therefore changing the way they live. The period of the professional experience was important to observe that there is still a lack of comprehension regarding the importance of online communication. If in one hand, new tolls are used, in the other hand the metrics and routines remained as they were before the appearance of social network. However, this observation does not mean that the answer to the question “Social Network: a complement or an essential component to press office?” is obvious, as, nowadays, needs in the journalism area emerge that justify press office work.

Siezieniewska, Katarzyna. "Zawód dziennikarza w obliczu konwergencji mediów". Doctoral thesis, 2014. https://depotuw.ceon.pl/handle/item/892.

Zastosowana technika badawcza to indywidualne wywiady pogłębione tzw. IDI w formie wywiadu swobodnego (z zarysowanym scenariuszem). Dwa istotniejsze wątki, zawarte w dysertacji to: przyszłość zawodu dziennikarskiego i mediów.
The aim of the doctoral dissertation of Katarzyna Siezieniewska is to analyze the changes in the journalist profession, which has taken place in recent years under the influence of converging processes involving the cohabitation of the media and new technologies. Journalists’ profession has experienced dynamic transformation, resulting primarily from convergence, but also influenced by economic crisis, the necessity of business models' transformation and last but not least expectations of employers, customers and the market. Diffusion of media, telecommunication, computer networks determines business and communication strategies, adopted and implemented in everyday functioning by both broadcasters and media recipients. Analysis of secondary (such as literature, research and reports and media coverage) and primary data conducted by K. Siezieniewska for the purposes of this thesis, clearly indicates convergence as the key principle driving current media environment. Methodology adopted by Katarzyna Siezieniewska in her dissertation, is based on two complementary operating systems - analysis and critique of sources, compiled with the results of qualitative research conducted by the author on a group of journalists. In the research part of the work, K. Siezieniewska used one of the most dynamically developing qualitative research strategies - Grounded Theory. The research technique used is so-called individual in-depth interviews (IDI) having a form of a free interview (with outlined scenario). The survey was conducted by the author in summer 2013, on the group of 29 journalists. As the result of the analysis of the primary material gathered, areas in which the transformation has the most noticeable character. These are: journalist's work organization (integration of production and multitasking in the field of: production, thematic, media, and even outside the media), new types of convergent journalism, media trends and development of media services. The work discusses in detail the journalists' attitude to the phenomenon of convergence and their profession. The paper mentions also the main problems that journalists of convergence times need to face: poor financial, ethical and merit media condition, pauperization of journalist profession, the process of negative selection within the profession, as well as creation of content adjusted to recipients expectations and finally bringing the role of the journalist's to just being a "slave" of analytical studies. Analysis of new trends in the media industry can be also found in this dissertation, such as changes in recipients interests, activation of the media audience, the quantitative development of the media, media chase after the recipients and the decay of the mass audience. In her work K. Siezieniewska raises the issue of development of media services on Polish market such as multiplatform delivery and digitization of television and radio. Expansion of journalists environment has also been described in the work. Two more important topics touched upon in the dissertation are: future of media and journalist profession. In the summary of the analytical work K. Siezieniewska brings up a thesis that the challenges connected with journalism future are focused on two areas: how to ensure the safety of media financing, and to create the legal framework enabling further evolution of the journalist profession.

Streszczenie:
Advances in online technology and news systems, such as automated reasoning across digital resources and connectivity to cloud servers for storage and software, have changed digital journalism production and publishing methods. Integrated media systems used by editors are also conduits to search systems and social media, but the lure of big data and rise in fake news have fragmented some layers of journalism, alongside investments in analytics and a shift in the loci for verification. Data has generated new roles to exploit data insights and machine learning methods, but access to big data and data lakes is so significant it has spawned newsworthy partnerships between media moguls and social media entrepreneurs. However, digital journalism does not even have its own semantic systems that could protect the values of journalism, but relies on the affordances of other systems. Amidst indexing and classification systems for well-defined vocabulary and concepts in news, data leaks and metadata present challenges for journalism. By contrast data visualisations and real-time field reporting with short-form mobile media and civilian drones set new standards during the European asylum seeker crisis. Aerial filming with drones also adds to the ontological base of journalism. An ontology for journalism and intersecting ontologies can inform the design of new semantic learning systems. The Semantic CAT Method, which draws on participatory design and game design, also assists the conceptual design of synthetic players with emotion attributes, towards a meta-model for learning. The design of context-aware sensor systems to protect journalists in conflict zones is also discussed.

Streszczenie:
AbstractThis chapter focuses on the issue of shared physical custody (SPC) in the broader context of coparenting interventions. To identify if and how these interventions address the issue of SPC, we provide a systematic overview of the currently available types of coparenting interventions after marital dissolution. To be selected, the interventions had to be published in peer-reviewed journals, target separated or divorced parents, integrate work on coparenting, and include a custody focus within the intervention curriculum or as a targeted outcome. Finally, they had to be subject to empirical evaluation. As a second step, using a case study, we investigate how the issue of SPC may be addressed before divorce, during couple therapy. We describe the therapy sessions to highlight the factors that may protect or undermine the development of a cooperative coparenting relationship while separating, and eventually create a positive shared-custody scenario after divorce. We also analyse the couple’s progress regarding individual symptomatology and coparenting satisfaction based on self-reported questionnaires and on the quality of their observed coparenting interactions. From a therapeutic perspective, this chapter aims to deepen our understanding of the challenges and opportunities of coparenting during and after separation and its intertwinement with the issue of SPC.

This essay traces the rise of sports journalism in nineteenth-century Britain. It examines the shift from early sporting periodicals like Bell’s Life in London with its emphasis on boxing and field sports such as hunting, to late century journals like the Sporting Life and the Sportsman with their emphasis on racing news, cricket, rugby and football. By the end of the century the coverage of these and other sports was becoming more fully integrated into large circulation daily, Sunday and evening journals. During the final decades of the century, as the commercialisation of sports was increasing full-time professional journalists began to write for sporting journals and newspapers. This was frequently done under conditions of speed and with the pressure to meet competitive deadlines. Modern sports journalism was in the process of being born.

New system ideas drawing on Affective Computing for journalism training include synthetic players with behaviour attributes, conceptualised as sub-systems and integrated with emotion engines, but they need to be designed from participatory data. System models could also look to advances in EmotionML (mark-up), but elicitation and articulation of emotions contextualised to professional interactions is the first step. Trigger documents from the Semantic CAT Method are used for these ends. Emotion-based vocabulary can also be integrated into logic models to consider machine reasoning for future journalism systems, but the conceptual models of Finite State Machines (FSMs) for Robo-Journo and Promo-Robo include health and emotion attributes assigned to transitions between states in professional processes. These automated systems are for verifying a story and treatment of press releases in the hands of journalists. Future context-aware systems can also include sensors and wearable systems, with potential to protect journalists reporting in conflict zones.

Integrated media systems are not only content management systems for production and publishing of online news, they are also hubs for mobile connectivity to remote servers and conduits for search and social media, but verification and analytics have also spawned data jobs intersecting with journalism. These layers of technological convergence across social media and media systems are like tunnels to data sharing on cloud servers. The latter has also presented opportunities for intermediary agencies, like Storyful, owned by Murdoch, to access big data and the potential of linked data via social media. The potential of cloud servers, mixed with social media, has also spawned new roles for news verification and roles in online trends, as well as cloud engineering jobs. Big data has indeed inspired new data sharing partnerships to boost online traffic and advertising through data insights. The result is more analytics that impact on the focus in journalism.

The purpose of this chapter is to contribute to the theoretical frame of transmedia journalism by proposing a question-based model that focuses on transmedia design when an immersive journalism piece is integrated into a transmedia space. Immersive journalism is a new medium that could be effectively used to foster social empathy by means of virtual reality stories in journalism. The chapter is guided by the following ideas: (1) narrative strategies that may be useful in the design of immersive journalism experiences; (2) aesthetic principles of immersive experiences; and (3) inclusion of an immersive experience in a transmedia space. Thus, this chapter reviews the narrative techniques and aesthetics of immersive experiences that might contribute to the design of both the immersive piece and the transmedia space.

Streszczenie:
This address considers relationships between professional and postdisciplinary practices as they relate to practice-led design research. When viewed through territorial lenses, the artefacts and systems that many designers in universities develop can be argued as hybrids because they draw into their composition and contexts, diverse disciplinary fields. Procedurally, the address moves outwards from a discussion of the manner in which disciplinary designations, that originated in the secularisation of German universities during the beginning of the nineteenth century, became the template for how much knowledge is currently processed inside the academy. The paper then examines how these demarcations of thought, that included non-classical languages and literatures, social and natural sciences and technology, were disrupted in the 1970s and 1980s, by identity-based disciplines that grew inside universities. These included women’s, lesbian and gay, and ethnic studies. However, of equal importance during this period was the arrival of professional disciplines like design, journalism, nursing, business management, and hospitality. Significantly, many of these professions brought with them values and processes associated with user-centred research. Shaped by the need to respond quickly and effectively to opportunity, practitioners were accustomed to drawing on and integrating knowledge unfettered by disciplinary or professional demarcation. For instance, if a design studio required the input of a government policymaker, a patent attorney and an engineer, it was accustomed to working flexibly with diverse realms of knowledge in the pursuit of an effective outcome. In addition, these professions also employed diverse forms of practice-led inquiry. Based on high levels of situated experimentation, active reflection, and applied professional knowing, these approaches challenged many research and disciplinary conventions within the academy. Although practice-led inquiry, argued as a form of postdisciplinarity practice, is a relatively new concept (Ings, 2019), it may be associated with Wright, Embrick and Henke’s (2015, p. 271) observation that “post-disciplinary studies emerge when scholars forget about disciplines and whether ideas can be identified with any particular one: they identify with learning rather than with disciplines”. Darbellay takes this further. He sees postdisciplinarity as an essential rethinking of the concept of a discipline. He suggests that when scholars position themselves outside of the idea of disciplines, they are able to “construct a new cognitive space, in which it is no longer merely a question of opening up disciplinary borders through degrees of interaction/integration, but of fundamentally challenging the obvious fact of disciplinarity” (2016, p. 367). These authors argue that, postdisciplinarity proposes a profound rethinking of not only knowledge, but also the structures that surround and support it in universities. In the field of design, such approaches are not unfamiliar. To illustrate how practice-led research in design may operate as a postdisciplinary inquiry, this paper employs a case study of the short film Sparrow (2017). In so doing, it unpacks the way in which knowledge from within and beyond conventionally demarcated disciplinary fields, was gathered, interpreted and creatively synthesised. Here, unconstrained by disciplinary demarcations, a designed artefact surfaced through a research fusion that integrated history, medicine, software development, public policy, poetry, typography, illustration, and film production.

Streszczenie:
Successful group work is a critical facet of engineering design. In addition to simply increasing the manpower available to solve a particular problem, team settings also leverage the variety of thinking offered by each individual. There are any number of functional behaviors that one might offer a team. This paper explores the idea that design journal records can provide key insight into the functional activities taken on by team members. The main questions asked by this study include (1) Can design journals provide consistent information about an individual’s functional behavior? (2) Are individuals likely to shift behaviors over the course of the project’s timeline? (3) Do individuals adapt to compensate for design behavior changes in other team members? The data in this study was collected from five volunteer teams of five to six undergraduate students each (total N = 29). At the time of their participation in the study, the volunteers were enrolled in the University of Maryland’s mechanical engineering capstone design course, Integrated Product and Process Development. Four of the teams participated in fall 2015 and one team participated in spring 2014. Participants maintained individual journals throughout their semester-long design projects, after receiving a set of guidelines to steer but not restrict journal usage. After the projects were completed, journals were coded using a previously validated coding scheme which associates each journal entry with a design behavior class and activity. Findings for this pilot study were very encouraging. Design journals proved to be a viable source of information about the functional behaviors of individuals. The majority of the undergraduate participants in this study were found to regularly shift their focuses to different behaviors as their projects progressed. When these shifts occurred, other team members regularly shifted to accommodate the change and maintain overall similar levels of activity in each area of functional behavior for the team as a whole throughout the project’s timeline.

The increased use of digital learning environments augments the adoption of open practices in education which contributes to SDG4. The COVID-19 pandemic has compelled an accelerated move towards technology-enhanced learning prompting educators to re-think and re-design learning environments grounded in innovative pedagogy and technology. In the current scenario it is imperative that educators are offered capacity development opportunities to meaningfully engage in digital and open practices. This paper presents a case study of an online capacity development intervention on OER-integrated technology-enhanced learning (TEL) material creation implemented with a group of educators studying for their master’s degree in teacher education. It focused on the design, development, implementation, and evaluation of OER-integrated TEL materials by the educators. The intervention comprised a carefully designed learning experience with intensive hands-on activities in the Moodle online learning environment, supplemented with a series of Zoom-based interactive workshops. Multiple data gathering occurred via questionnaires, discussion forums, reflective journals, and focus group interviews. The findings revealed that the systematic learning experience design which adopted a ‘learning by designing’ approach harnessing the affordances of both technology and pedagogy has empowered educators to become active creators of OER-integrated TEL materials and to take leadership in integrating digital and open practices into teaching-learning processes.

Statistical literacy is a prerequisite to effectively use statistics to inform decisions for planning, analysis, monitoring, and evaluation, thus increasing transparency and accountability. The statistical literacy indicator measures the use of and critical engagement with statistics in national newspapers. The target population are journalists and newspaper readers. This excludes the illiterate population and those without access to print or online media. Streszczenie:
This paper explains in a de-westernized sense (Gunaratne, 2010) how internet-mediated communication changes the way we deal with and plan time both individually and culturally in Germany and China. Therefore, it blends Western and Eastern culture and media theories. The paper focuses on two distinct phenomena: temporal change due to social media, and Online journalism, as the core of Internet-mediated communication (for Germany 39% communication, media use 24% Projektgruppe ARD/ZDF-Multimedia, 2016; for China 90.7% instant messaging, 82% Internet news China Internet Network Information Center, 2017), with other temporal change via smart devices touched upon (Ash, 2018). General research on time in post modern societies, recently more focused on media’s temporal change phenomena (e.g. Barker, 2012; Barker, 2018; Castells, 2010; Eriksen, 2001; Hartmann, 2016; Hassan, 2003; Innis, 2004; Neverla, 2010a, 2010b; Nowotny, 1995; Rantanen, 2005; Wajcman, 2010; Wajcman and Dodd) has not yet linked the different societal and cultural levels of temporal change. Thus, we suggest the following to fill this research gap: For a micro perspective the notions of network theories (e.g. Granovetter, 1973; Schönhuth, 2013), media synchronicity (Dennis, Fuller, and Valacich, 2008) and the idea of permanent connectivity (Sonnentag, Reinecke, Mata, and Vorderer, 2018; van Dijck, 2013; Vorderer, Krömer, and Schneider, 2016) are linked. On a meso level, institutional change in Online journalism with a focus on acceleration is modeled (Ananny, 2016; Bødker and Sonnevend, 2017; Dimmick, Feaster, and Hoplamazian, 2011; Krüger, 2014; Neuberger, 2010). On a macro level, mediatization theory (Couldry and Hepp, 2017; Krotz, 2001, 2012) and recent acceleration theory (Rosa, 2005, 2012, 2017) is discussed. The levels are systematically linked suggesting a micro-meso-macro-link (Quandt, 2010) to then ask if and how many of the dimensions of the construct temporal understanding (Faust, 2016) can be changed through Internet-mediated communication. Temporal understanding consists of nine dimensions: General past, general future, instrumental experience (monochronicity), fatalism, interacting experience (polychronicity), pace of life, future as planned expectation and result of proximal goals as well as future as trust based interacting expectation and result of present positive behavior. Temporal understanding integrates the anthropological construct of polychronicity (Bluedorn, Kalliath, Strube, and Martin, 1999; Hall, 1984; Lindquist and Kaufman-Scarborough, 2007), pace of life (Levine, 1998) and temporal horizon (Klapproth, 2011) into a broader framework which goes beyond Western biased constructs through the theory driven incorporation of Confucian notions (Chinese Culture Connection, 1987). Finally, meta trends are laid out.

STEM education has received a lot of attention, including in Indonesia, because it is considered capable of preparing competitive students in the 21st century. However, the implementation of STEM learning is constrained because there are no standard guidelines according to the curriculum 2013 (education curriculum in Indonesia). Therefore, the aim of this study is to find an integration formula for STEM learning and the curriculum 2013 based on the synthesis of various literature to find a formula for implementing STEM learning in accordance with the curriculum 2013. This study is a systematic review. The data sources in this research are 46 selected literatures and relevant to the research objectives published between 1996 and 2020. The data sources are literature published in ISBN books, government documents, and journals. The data collected from the literature were analyzed with a thematic model starting with data introduction, initial coding, compiling code within a theme, analyzing themes, naming themes, and relating findings to research questions. The research resulted in a learning step that combines EDP in STEM, the scientific approach in the 2013 curriculum, and project learning steps. The merger produces a guideline for implementing STEM learning in the 2013 curriculum starting from problem identification, making problem-solving designs, design realization, testing and studying product deficiencies, improving products, drawing conclusions, and communicating the findings of the learning process.

A quick look to the literature related to “Design” points out the fact that traditional fields are covered by a huge quantity of concepts and sub-topics dealing with various research fields. Some of these fields and related concepts are emerging and others are disappearing. The last two decades provided a large variations in the covered fields—probably because of the computers capacity and the knowledge sharing using the internet- We are convinced that is time now for a global understanding of the evolution of the related preoccupations in order to start a new phase that deals with the next guidelines issues in design. Many researchers and gurus have proposed evolution schemes from an epistemological point of view. However, we believe that we still need a pragmatic analysis of what have been done and what is going on now in the various publications that deals with design, conferences and journals. To do so, we present in this paper an approach that lies on the systematic analysis of the International Design Engineering Technical Conference (IDETC-ASME), the Design Conference, the Integrated Design and Manufacturing in Mechanical Engineering (IDMME) and the International Conference in Engineering Design (ICED). We also consider the major reviews and journals related to design such as Computer-Aided Design, Journal of mechanical design and many others. Our proposition, presents a global overview that shows the time-evolution of the topics, the density production, the emerging areas and concepts. We show then that some topics remain with a great interest and other are in a decreasing period. A specific study of what is going on within the Design Automation Conference is provided and an open discussion is started.

Streszczenie:
Background: The tens of thousands of academic journal websites that are on the Internet today often do not have a clear organizational structure for their website. If most of them are convenient enough for readers (if the journal is open access), then many have problems informing authors about the conditions, the process of submitting and reviewing the manuscript. The Editorial Offices empirically populate the journal's website with content that can change dramatically (both in terms of website design and content) as the journal develops. Aim of Study: To develop a website model for an academic journal that takes into account the basic requirements for the preparation, publication, and archiving of high quality scientific manuscripts. Material and Methods: The academic journal website model is based on a structural-functional approach. The website content consists of text and integrated applications. This model takes into account the basic requirements for the preparation, publication, and archiving of high-quality open access scientific manuscripts, as well as the indexing of journal articles by leading indexing agencies. Results: The academic journal website model is structured with the following menu and submenu elements: 1. HOME: 1.1. Journal information; 1.2. From the editorial office; 1.3. Databases, Indexing; 2. EDITORIAL BOARD: 2.1. Editorial board; 2.2. Reviewers; 2.3. Editing and reviewing process; 3. EDITORIAL POLICIES: 3.1. Editorial policies; 3.2. Plagiarism policy; 3.3. Open access policy; 3.4. The ethics codex of scientific publications; 3.5. Disclaimer; 3.6. License terms; 3.7. Terms of publications (fee); 4. ARCHIV: 4.1. Previous issues; 4.2. Current issue; 4.3. Articles online first; 5. INSTRUCTIONS FOR AUTHORS: 5.1. General recommendations; 5.2. Manuscript templates; 5.3. Supplemental materials; 6. STATISTICS: 6.1. Publications; 6.2. Authors; 6.3. Readers; 7. CONTACTS: 7.1. Contact; 7.2. Subscriptions; 7.3. Search. Conclusions: This academic journal website model was implemented for the International Journal of Science Annals (IJSA). Authors and readers of IJSA noted the advantages of the model proposed by the author, including: a convenient and understandable website interface, the availability of the necessary hyperlinks to the pages of the journal's website and external media (sites of indexed agencies, library archives, etc.), convenient search for information on the website and published in the journal articles (by author, publication, text of the article), availability of integrated applications (online submission of manuscripts, filing appeals against the decision of reviewers and complaints about published articles, viewing the interactive printed version of the journal, etc.), availability of templates (for authors, reviewers), availability of multiple formats for archiving articles (PDF, DOAJ, XML, TXT), the ability to choose the style of citing the article and the website language (English, Ukrainian), etc. Keywords: journal, model, website, academic, indexing

African Open Science Platform Part 1: Landscape Study. Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf), 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.17159/assaf.2019/0047.

Streszczenie:
This report maps the African landscape of Open Science – with a focus on Open Data as a sub-set of Open Science. Data to inform the landscape study were collected through a variety of methods, including surveys, desk research, engagement with a community of practice, networking with stakeholders, participation in conferences, case study presentations, and workshops hosted. Although the majority of African countries (35 of 54) demonstrates commitment to science through its investment in research and development (R&D), academies of science, ministries of science and technology, policies, recognition of research, and participation in the Science Granting Councils Initiative (SGCI), the following countries demonstrate the highest commitment and political willingness to invest in science: Botswana, Ethiopia, Kenya, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, and Uganda. In addition to existing policies in Science, Technology and Innovation (STI), the following countries have made progress towards Open Data policies: Botswana, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, South Africa and Uganda. Only two African countries (Kenya and South Africa) at this stage contribute 0.8% of its GDP (Gross Domestic Product) to R&D (Research and Development), which is the closest to the AU’s (African Union’s) suggested 1%. Countries such as Lesotho and Madagascar ranked as 0%, while the R&D expenditure for 24 African countries is unknown. In addition to this, science globally has become fully dependent on stable ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) infrastructure, which includes connectivity/bandwidth, high performance computing facilities and data services. This is especially applicable since countries globally are finding themselves in the midst of the 4th Industrial Revolution (4IR), which is not only “about” data, but which “is” data. According to an article1 by Alan Marcus (2015) (Senior Director, Head of Information Technology and Telecommunications Industries, World Economic Forum), “At its core, data represents a post-industrial opportunity. Its uses have unprecedented complexity, velocity and global reach. As digital communications become ubiquitous, data will rule in a world where nearly everyone and everything is connected in real time. That will require a highly reliable, secure and available infrastructure at its core, and innovation at the edge.” Every industry is affected as part of this revolution – also science. An important component of the digital transformation is “trust” – people must be able to trust that governments and all other industries (including the science sector), adequately handle and protect their data. This requires accountability on a global level, and digital industries must embrace the change and go for a higher standard of protection. “This will reassure consumers and citizens, benefitting the whole digital economy”, says Marcus. A stable and secure information and communication technologies (ICT) infrastructure – currently provided by the National Research and Education Networks (NRENs) – is key to advance collaboration in science. The AfricaConnect2 project (AfricaConnect (2012–2014) and AfricaConnect2 (2016–2018)) through establishing connectivity between National Research and Education Networks (NRENs), is planning to roll out AfricaConnect3 by the end of 2019. The concern however is that selected African governments (with the exception of a few countries such as South Africa, Mozambique, Ethiopia and others) have low awareness of the impact the Internet has today on all societal levels, how much ICT (and the 4th Industrial Revolution) have affected research, and the added value an NREN can bring to higher education and research in addressing the respective needs, which is far more complex than simply providing connectivity. Apart from more commitment and investment in R&D, African governments – to become and remain part of the 4th Industrial Revolution – have no option other than to acknowledge and commit to the role NRENs play in advancing science towards addressing the SDG (Sustainable Development Goals). For successful collaboration and direction, it is fundamental that policies within one country are aligned with one another. Alignment on continental level is crucial for the future Pan-African African Open Science Platform to be successful. Both the HIPSSA ((Harmonization of ICT Policies in Sub-Saharan Africa)3 project and WATRA (the West Africa Telecommunications Regulators Assembly)4, have made progress towards the regulation of the telecom sector, and in particular of bottlenecks which curb the development of competition among ISPs. A study under HIPSSA identified potential bottlenecks in access at an affordable price to the international capacity of submarine cables and suggested means and tools used by regulators to remedy them. Work on the recommended measures and making them operational continues in collaboration with WATRA. In addition to sufficient bandwidth and connectivity, high-performance computing facilities and services in support of data sharing are also required. The South African National Integrated Cyberinfrastructure System5 (NICIS) has made great progress in planning and setting up a cyberinfrastructure ecosystem in support of collaborative science and data sharing. The regional Southern African Development Community6 (SADC) Cyber-infrastructure Framework provides a valuable roadmap towards high-speed Internet, developing human capacity and skills in ICT technologies, high- performance computing and more. The following countries have been identified as having high-performance computing facilities, some as a result of the Square Kilometre Array7 (SKA) partnership: Botswana, Ghana, Kenya, Madagascar, Mozambique, Mauritius, Namibia, South Africa, Tunisia, and Zambia. More and more NRENs – especially the Level 6 NRENs 8 (Algeria, Egypt, Kenya, South Africa, and recently Zambia) – are exploring offering additional services; also in support of data sharing and transfer. The following NRENs already allow for running data-intensive applications and sharing of high-end computing assets, bio-modelling and computation on high-performance/ supercomputers: KENET (Kenya), TENET (South Africa), RENU (Uganda), ZAMREN (Zambia), EUN (Egypt) and ARN (Algeria). Fifteen higher education training institutions from eight African countries (Botswana, Benin, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, Sudan, and Tanzania) have been identified as offering formal courses on data science. In addition to formal degrees, a number of international short courses have been developed and free international online courses are also available as an option to build capacity and integrate as part of curricula. The small number of higher education or research intensive institutions offering data science is however insufficient, and there is a desperate need for more training in data science. The CODATA-RDA Schools of Research Data Science aim at addressing the continental need for foundational data skills across all disciplines, along with training conducted by The Carpentries 9 programme (specifically Data Carpentry 10 ). Thus far, CODATA-RDA schools in collaboration with AOSP, integrating content from Data Carpentry, were presented in Rwanda (in 2018), and during17-29 June 2019, in Ethiopia. Awareness regarding Open Science (including Open Data) is evident through the 12 Open Science-related Open Access/Open Data/Open Science declarations and agreements endorsed or signed by African governments; 200 Open Access journals from Africa registered on the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ); 174 Open Access institutional research repositories registered on openDOAR (Directory of Open Access Repositories); 33 Open Access/Open Science policies registered on ROARMAP (Registry of Open Access Repository Mandates and Policies); 24 data repositories registered with the Registry of Data Repositories (re3data.org) (although the pilot project identified 66 research data repositories); and one data repository assigned the CoreTrustSeal. Although this is a start, far more needs to be done to align African data curation and research practices with global standards. Funding to conduct research remains a challenge. African researchers mostly fund their own research, and there are little incentives for them to make their research and accompanying data sets openly accessible. Funding and peer recognition, along with an enabling research environment conducive for research, are regarded as major incentives. The landscape report concludes with a number of concerns towards sharing research data openly, as well as challenges in terms of Open Data policy, ICT infrastructure supportive of data sharing, capacity building, lack of skills, and the need for incentives. Although great progress has been made in terms of Open Science and Open Data practices, more awareness needs to be created and further advocacy efforts are required for buy-in from African governments. A federated African Open Science Platform (AOSP) will not only encourage more collaboration among researchers in addressing the SDGs, but it will also benefit the many stakeholders identified as part of the pilot phase. The time is now, for governments in Africa, to acknowledge the important role of science in general, but specifically Open Science and Open Data, through developing and aligning the relevant policies, investing in an ICT infrastructure conducive for data sharing through committing funding to making NRENs financially sustainable, incentivising open research practices by scientists, and creating opportunities for more scientists and stakeholders across all disciplines to be trained in data management.
