Pełny tekst źródłaWith the spread of internet usage over the past decades, access characteristics of electronic scientific publica-tions, especially the number of document downloads, are of increasing interest to the authors, publishers, technical providers and users of such publications. These download data of publications are usually obtained from the protocols of the IT systems of the provider. A data set is then created by filtering all accesses and subsequent summarizing over a certain time unit. Download data are the subject of scientific investigations, in which the concept of the Citation Impact is applied to the rate of use of a publication and the so-called Download Impact is formed. Special attention is paid to the relation between Citation Impact and Download Impact. In the case of Open Access publications, two types of access need to be distinguished. Human access and machine access are both captured and a reliable distinction is not possible yet. As a result, the data obtained for single publications are unreliable and subject to strong fluctuations. Nevertheless, they contain valuable information that can be made useful with the help of mathematical statistics. Analyzed with nonparametric methods, download data give information about the visibility of electronic publications on the Internet. These methods form the core of NoRA (Non-parametric Repository Analysis). With the help of NoRA, the operators of Open Access Repositories are able to analyze the download data of their electronic publications, to identify and correct deficiencies of visibility and to increase the quality of their online platform. The analytical method NoRA was successfully applied to data from Institutional Repositories of four universities. In each case, groups of publications were identified that differed significantly in their usage. Similarities in the results reveal factors that influence the usage data, which have not been taken into account previously. The presented results imply further applications of NoRA but also raise doubts about the value of download data of single publications.

Pełny tekst źródłaObjective: The purpose of this paper is to investigate the progress so far made by Uugandan universities in establishing Institutional Repositories (IRs) Methods: A questionnaire was designed and distributed among the member institutions of the Consortium of Uganda Uuniversity Librarries (CUUL). Data received from the questionnaires was augmented by osite visits, discussions and interviews with the university libraries. Results: Despite numerous benefits associated with IRs, few institutions have established IRs in Uganda due to certain barriers. This paper argues that although these imbalances are manifested, opportunities still exists for the establishment of IRs for national development. Recommendations: The paper emphasizes the need for partnerships with the different stakeholders in the planning and developing institutional repositories. Conclusions: Insitutional repositories should be considered as principal benchmarks of digital scholarship. Originality/value – It is believed that higher institutions of learning and communities would benefit substantially from establishing IRs. However, it can only be possible with well developed infrastructure, increased funding, coordination and advocacy.

Pełny tekst źródłaInstitutional repositories emerge as a new approach to manage and maintain effectively the intellectual assets of an institute through the digital content for scholarly communication. It includes e-prints of research data, e-learning materials and other forms of institutional intellectual outputs, which are generally not available or preserved elsewhere. Digital publishing, global networking, new researches, and improved communication among scholars are driving the demand for broader access. In the present scenario, IR’s are become an indispensable component for information and knowledge sharing in the universities and higher education world. The Institutional Repository increased visibility reflects a high quality of scholarship; this display of value can translate into tangible benefits including the funding from public and private sources that drives in part from an institution status and reputation. The paper explores and discusses the conceptual development, benefits, standard, sustainability & funding of Institutional repositories. Paper has also discussed about the open source software’s and Commercial Digital Repository Software that are available to create and maintain in institutional repositories. This paper also tries to explore the contents of IRs and skill requirement for the implantations of the successful Institutional Repository.

Pełny tekst źródłaInstitutional Repositories (IRs) and ETD programs conducted in December 2011. The purpose of the survey was two-fold. The first was to show the growth of Institutional Repositories (IRs) across Canada. The second was to illustrate the state of the electronic theses and dissertations (ETD) submission programs at Canadian institutions. The survey was a follow up to a 2009 survey and illustrates there has been steady growth in both the number of IRs and ETD programs in Canada. Results of the survey include statistics on the number of IRs, types of materials in the IRs, the type software platform, the number of ETD programs, whether electronic submission is mandatory, if embargoed or restricted theses and dissertations are allowed, the number of institutions having their ETDs harvested by Library and Archives Canada and the number of institutions sending their theses to ProQuest and retaining a microfiche copy. The survey was sent to Canadian institutions where a thesis or dissertation is required for graduation and to Canadian institutions who are members of the Canadian Association for Research Libraries. Responses were received from 33 institutions. Best practices for ETD programs and workflows will also be discussed. Focus areas include the PDF format for multiple and multi-media files, OAI-PMH harvesting, mandatory submission and embargoes. By analyzing the results of the survey, it is clear that Canada is moving forward quickly in the implementation of ETD submission programs. The fact that over 70% of Canadian institutions have their ETDs harvested by Library and Archives Canada puts Canada, and it’s National Library, in a unique position to share its knowledge and expertise in ETD programs and ETD workflows.

Pełny tekst źródłaIn 2008 the Peruvian Network for Digital Theses (RPTD) started with 4 universities. According to the National Association of Rectors (ANR, in Spanish), there are 77 universities in Peru, both public and private; 12 of them have an electronic theses portal, and only 9 share their metadata through the OAI-PMH protocol. Relying on strategic alliances, RPTD has rendered more visible scientific information produced in Peru, and has promoted the creation of other portals hosting digital theses and other contents as in the case of AMAUTA, the First Peruvian Digital Repository. It is not a surprise that AMAUTA and RPTD have some common features in design and functioning. Contents collected in RPTD and AMAUTA pose challenges that must be addressed so we can secure a sustainable functioning in time. First, these repositories centralize information so they and make access faster; make possible the re-utilization of data and the generation of other online scientific projects (UNMSM Research Journals); help identify deficiencies in bibliographic description and identifiers, helping us in the elaboration of proposals for the standardization of the bibliographical description and the creation of a authorities data base. These are some of the activities proposed and designed in this article, including challenges faces and possible solutions.

Pełny tekst źródłaThe NDLTD Union Catalog is an international collection of ETD metadata that is harvested from various institutional, regional and cross-institutional collections. The Union Catalog has grown substantially in the 10 years since its launch and now contains almost 2 million records. However, various issues have surfaced during the maintenance of the Union Catalog and its downstream service providers. For example, at this scale, the well-known best practice of the OAI-PMH to restrict the size of a response to 100 records or 1MB has a severe impact on harvesting time. This paper describes this problem and other issues that are relevant to the Union Catalog and similar projects. For each such issue, solutions are discussed. Together these present a set of guidelines not only for large union catalogues but also for the design of large digital library collections in general.

Pełny tekst źródłaOne of the reasons that we know so little of ancient life is because much of written history of those times has been lost. We can only speculate what really happened. If only we had not lost all the treasures…If only we had preserved that knowledge somewhere else or in some other medium, then probably mankind need not have to start all over again re-discovering knowledge. The loss of knowledge is due to three reasons - Disasters, Media Deterioration, and Alternative Formats & Obsolete Technology A clear idea about what could be lost will only lead us to take precautionary steps or to lessen the damage. Within a library and information service (LIS), the most likely disasters are fire or flood, but those caused by wind, earthquakes and other natural phenomena can also happen. Acts of sabotage or terrorism may occur which can destroy, or seriously disrupt the LIS. And with more and more information being held in electronic format, computer disasters, whether caused by system failure or unauthorized access and hacking into files, are becoming more common. Information is necessarily recorded on some kind of medium. All media deteriorate over time, at different rates and for different reasons. When information is provided in alternative formats – for example microforms or digitized form - equipment for using them must not only be provided, but also kept maintained in good working condition. Preserving long-term access to digital information resources is one of the key challenges facing libraries and information centers today. The paper iterates what steps have been taken by Physical Research Laboratory, Library to overcome this challenge.

The purpose of this thesis is to suggest guidelines for policies related to the settling of institutional repositories (IRs) under development at UFF. Institutional repositories are analyzed in a broad way, especially in the topics related to policy, institutional environment, management, implementation, and technology. The crucial of the research is centered around four themes: typology of the documents, form of deposit; copyright; diffusion and marketing. The analysis is qualitative and exploratory, building on the existing theoretical and empirical literature on the subject. In particular, the existing empirical literature analyses the developing of IRs at UERJ, Fiocruz and Inmetro. The development of IRs at UFF is developed from semi-structured interviews to members of the UFF community, who presented their views on processes of data collection, Open Access to various databases, development of IRs, and broader information policies. The motivation of this research builds on the growing importance of IRs to the academic community, mostly due to the greater visibility it gives to the intellectual production and the research universities. In conclude, this research builds on the existing literature, experiments investigated and the interviews of members of the UFF to present guidelines for the development of settlements of institutional repositories under construction at UFF.

Abstract: The flood of scientific data in recent years presents challenges and new opportunities. Challenges include optimizing the use and reuse of data and opportunities, developing infrastructure with implementation of data repositories and all activities inherent to them such as management, description, dissemination, integration, copyright, privacy, where appropriate, quality and preservation of data set. The Data Management Plan is a document composed of guidelines that guide the researchers in the articulation to release their datasets that will be deposited in the repositories. The guidelines outlined in the Data Management Plan need to be explicit in relation to copyright issues. The licensing of data clearly establishes the terms of use avoiding future legal problems. Creative Commons and Open Data Commons licenses are used to license data and justify the aims of this research which consists of investigating how the data repositories of the world's top 100 universities spell out in their Data Management Plans the recommendations related to copyright of data. The methodology used was based on quantitative and qualitative research, including an exploratory-descriptive study. The data collection was done in the Data Management Plans of the repositories implemented in the 100 best universities in the world. The results show that most of the universities analyzed have implemented a data repository, but not all repositories have PGDs and copyright guidelines.

The exponential increase in the production of scientific data and information is directly associated with the evolution of digital information and communication technologies and, in view of this scenario, it is noticed the need for institutions to implement digital information environments that can bring them together, organize them, disseminate and preserve them. Institutional repositories, objects of study of this research, are potential environments for such actions; its implementation, however, must meet the information needs of its target audience, making it necessary to apply methods, techniques and attributes that promote the finding of scientific information. With the objective of verifying that institutional repositories have been implemented based on attributes that enable information to be found by information subjects, this study uses as reference the institutional repositories of the three state universities of the state of São Paulo - USP, UNESP and UNICAMP. In order to achieve the objectives of the research, the four-pole method is used, which allows dynamicity and flexibility for the development of the study through its four poles: epistemological, theoretical, technical and morphological. The epistemological pole addressed the post-custodial paradigm of Information Science and Post-Phenomenology to support the study, epistemologically. The theoretical pole allowed the search for contributions related to the themes that permeate the research object, namely: Digital Repositories, with emphasis on Institutional Repositories, DSpace as technology for implementation, and Information Findability. The technical pole evidences the methodological procedures for carrying out the study: bibliographical research and literature review to address the epistemological and theoretical foundations mentioned, as well as applied research, which occurred in two phases, the first being the application of the "Checklist for evaluation of Information Finding in Institutional Repositories "in the institutional repositories of USP, UNESP and UNICAMP, through the observation technique, and the second refers to the application of tasks to the masters of the Graduate Programs in Education and Speech-Language Pathology of UNESP of Marília, from the eye-tracking technology, in the three repositories, being executed, along with the technique of verbal protocol and, later, interviews. The morphological pole is intended to present the results of the research, as well as to the proposed recommendations for the institutional repositories analyzed. From the evaluation with the checklist, the results revealed problems related to the attributes Folksonomy, Information Discovery and Accessibility and Usability, in the three repositories. In at least one of them, problems were observed with the attributes: Navigational Taxonomies, Mediation of Information Professionals and Mobility, Convergence and Ubiquity. Considering the limitations of this technique of data collection, it was not possible to evaluate the attributes of terminological control instruments, intentionality and mediation of computer scientists. In a second moment, it was possible to evaluate the attribute of Information Discovery with eye-tracking technology. After the evaluations, ten information retrieval recommendations were generated for institutional repositories.

Pełny tekst źródłaThis study examined the relationship between policies and practices of the university research data institutional repository Edinburgh DataShare in the context of the management of research data, based on the following categories: responsibility, content, legal aspects, standards, digital preservation, policy access and use, and sustainability and financing. The methodology was a qualitative case study of survey documents and data on the Internet and direct observation of the repository. It used NVivo software for recording and data analysis. The characteristics of Edinburgh DataShare for accountability, there is the presence of information technology (IT) professionals and information professionals (especially librarians) in the team. On content, metadata 161 items recovered on 09 October 2014 were examined since the repository was initially populated by a pilot project, most of the items (103 items) was created by the same investigator, Bert Remijsen, of subject area of Linguistics and English Language (Linguistics and Language Inglês). Regarding the legal aspects, the adoption of open licenses is an option that Edinburgh DataShare offers, with the ODC-BY license, but there is also the option of not choosing the license and indicate different licenses or other information concerning copyright metadata in dc .rights. About the standards, the software used is DSpace, which enables interoperability with other internal and external systems to the University. The use of a standard application profile Qualified Dublin Core, for specific set of research data, facilitates the retrieval of information and interoperability with other systems, by using a standard recognized worldwide. The deposit flow documented and available on the Internet and the inclusion in the University's research data management workflow bring security and stability to the services repository. There is a digital preservation policy repository that guides the preservation actions. Only Handle was used as a permanent identifier to the beginning of November 2014, and from that moment, became also included the DOI. On access and use, the deposit is made by people linked to the University, research data from the University, and access to metadata and to most materials is free for all, without identification. Information retrieval is under development; in February 2015 a new form of research was available, expanding the possibilities of access, sharing and use of sets of research data, increasing the scope of the objectives of Edinburgh DataShare. With regard to sustainability and financing, little information was retrieved, but it was evident, by the beginning was a project funded by JISC Repositories and within the Preservation Programme and have been included in a structure of the University, which is a project that requires a big investment and requires institutional support to ensure its continuity. Edinburgh DataShare is an essential part of the University research data management, but is not the only digital curation mechanism used by the University. Edinburgh DataShare is fulfilling additional task the cycle of scientific communication and provide the conditions for the creation of so-called extended publications by providing services that enable researchers to bind your search data to their publications through permanent identifiers. Introducing the relationship between the guidelines and the Edinburgh DataShare practices in the context of research data management, it was possible to see a continuous relationship building guidelines and practices. This form of construction brings as a consequence some differences between the guidelines and practices, as they are not always at the same time of maturity.

Pełny tekst źródłaThis doctoral thesis’ objective is twofold: to establish a set of evaluation of institutional research repositories indicators and to apply these indicators to spanish institutional repositories. A secondary objective is to find out researchers’ satisfaction about an institutional repository. After ten years from Berlin’s declaration, it could be the adequate time to define some repositories evaluation indicators, focus on internal management and users’ satisfaction. The approach is that even there is not an only way to evaluate institutional repositories, some general criteria could be given. After making a review of the recent literature about repositories indicators, it has been developed a set of criteria that could be applied to the institutional repositories as an evaluation potential model. It has been had in mind specifically those factors about the institutional repositories’ performance related to its management. As a result, a proposal of technological, process, marketing and staff indicators is presented, the final objective being that the repository could be a useful tool for the final user and the institution. A survey to spanish institutional repositories was conducted so as to know if these indicators were useful to evaluate the research repositories. Therefore, a set of indicators was provided to get an overview of the way in which Spanish institutional repositories are run and the services they offer their respective institutions and other users. The selected descriptors are based on aspects related to technology, procedures, content, marketing and the personnel responsible for managing repositories. In order to establish the indicators, a thorough review of the literature was carried out to identify existing indicators that are used to assess repositories. These were divided into five categories (technology, procedures, content, marketing and personnel) with a total of 48 components. An online survey was conducted with the repositories managers of 66 Spanish research institutions in order to verify the degree of fulfilment of the selected indicators. The survey received forty-six responses, which represented a response rate of 69%. Of these, 44 came from universities and two from research centres. Sixty-five per cent of the repositories have the capacity to import data from and export data to other university systems, mainly CRIS (32%). Most repositories have mechanisms for the large-scale import and export of metadata and digital objects (83%). The use of altmetrics in repositories is widespread (44%). Authors and librarians deposit most frequently (37% and 32%, respectively), in spite of the fact that 44% do not have full-time staff working in the repository. In more than 80% of the repositories, between 90% and 100% of the deposits are full-text documents. With respect to the tools used to promote the repository within the institution, these are primarily face-to-face training sessions (82%), followed by support materials such as manuals and help pages (65%). The academic authorities encourage open access among researchers in 56% of cases, a significant element in repository marketing. This work proposes a model based on five dimensions and 48 indicators to assess institutional repositories. This approach has been applied to Spanish institutional repositories to provide up-to-date information about their management procedures and promotional methods and the services they offer authors and the university community. This overview of Spanish repositories has provided an insight into the way in which repositories have evolved in recent years and allowed potential improvements to be identified based on the most advanced repositories. This model can also be exported to assess institutional repositories in other countries. The secondary aim of this study was to determine the awareness of open access among the academic staff of a research-oriented Spanish university, their use of the institutional repository and their satisfaction with its services. An anonymous survey of 37 questions was sent to all professors, researchers and doctoral students of the University of Navarra. A total of 352 responses (17%) were received. The responses showed statistically significant differences in opinions concerning open access journals and services created on top of the repository. Although there was general agreement on the need for open access, half the respondents adopted open access practices (which included the use of the institutional repository, and other pages and academic platforms). This percentage increased with the older respondents, who were also senior members of staff with tenure and positions of authority at the university. The decision to make publications accessible in open access depends on academic reward and on professional recognition. The services offered by the repository were generally perceived positively, with differences according to the age and subject area of the respondents. The awareness of those differences might help the university library to provide faculty with training and products that suit to their needs and habits. Limitations of the study, future research lines and final considerations are provided.

Pełny tekst źródłaIn the past decade, the Open Educational Resources (OER) movement has gained ground and expanded exponentially. Previously, there were only localized OER initiatives; now OER are recognized and supported by key international institutions, governments and funders worldwide. Although OER have become more significant worldwide and their availability and use have expanded, the movement has still not achieved its full potential and entered the mainstream education system. This doctoral thesis provides, on the one hand, an overview of the current state of repositories of open educational resources (ROER) in higher education at international level, specifically to clarify the understanding of the reuse of OER and the needs of the education context provided by educational repositories. On the other hand, it gathers useful information on perceptions and behaviour patterns regarding the use, reuse and sharing of OER by their own users. The first research was based on a content analysis methodology and consisted of two phases: an exploration of international sources, and an analysis of 110 ROER using the proposed set of indicators. The results focus on data from the analysis of their websites and some models of good practices. They are presented according to three core dimensions for evaluating ROER: general factors to establish types of repositories, a focus on drivers for OER reuse; and a focus on educational aspects. It was found that most of the ROER that included one or more of the proposed reuse indicators were created exclusively for educational resources. Educational aspects are not yet firmly embedded into ROER. The few repositories that seem to have successfully included them are those that provide other educational metadata and use educational standards. The research method of the second study was focused on a survey, which was part of the “Open Resources: Influence on Learners and Educators” (ORIOLE) project, based on the Institute of Educational Technology of The Open University of United Kingdom. The international online ORIOLE Survey 2013, available in English and Spanish, was conducted through practitioner OER communities to collect information about the contexts in which open resource use may occur; looking particularly at attitudes about reuse of OER in teaching. What influences open resources in education is a topic of relevance to anyone taking on forward engagement with open education and the answers lie with those who are working directly in the delivery of learning and teaching, which will serve to design repositories more tailored to their needs.

Abstract: Archival institutions are constantly challenged to update the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) to reliably organize, preserve and provide their document collections that are generated in large quantity and in different media. Currently, the archival collections are hybrids, ie they are composed of documents that were originally digital, converted to digital, and analog. This requires that the institutions optimize their services, especially as regards to service to the user who aims to have his / her information needs satisfied easily, quickly and safely. In this scenario, the objective of this study is to analyze the set of essential attributes for the deployment of Trusted Digital Archival Repositories (TDARs) and the linking of the archivist as a member of a work team in guiding the requirements with emphasis on access to information. The methodological procedure was chosen by theoretical study grounded on the principles of Archivology. The exploratory stage is carried out from the analysis of Resolution 39 of CONARQ (Guidelines for the implementation of Trusted Digital Archival Repositories TDARs) and ISO 16363: 2012 (Space data and information transfer systems - Audit and certification of trustworthy digital repositories) that make technical recommendations used as a basis for digital repositories being certified as reliable or allow the measurement of repository reliability. The results present the archivist's actions for access to archival docume... (Complete abstract click electronic access below)
