Pełny tekst źródłaDuring the late Qing dynasty, a multitude of French engineers embarked on journeys to various regions of the Chinese Empire, assuming diverse and evolving roles in Franco-Chinese relations. Despite their diverse backgrounds, they were typically youthful and shared some common professional traits. They often enjoyed substantial compensation and prestigious honors throughout their careers, leading to remarkable upward social mobility. Their numbers witnessed significant growth from the mid-19th to the early 20th century. Initially, military engineers held dominance, but they gradually ceded ground to engineers from the state civil corps and civilian engineers who assumed multifaceted roles in commerce and industry. Concurrently, many military engineers entered private commercial ventures, which were expanding and diversifying. The enduring presence of French engineers in China was predominantly composed of civil engineers, drawn by factors such as marriage, religion and culture. Within the Chinese Empire, France leveraged its technical expertise to compete with other industrial powers. These engineers accomplished impressive infrastructural projects within the Chinese Empire, leaving behind them a rich historical legacy. Although not always synonymous with economic success, their achievements showcased both their technical expertise and the technological prowess of the French industrial landscape during the 19th and 20th centuries. Their written works, encompassing reports, blueprints, narratives, and familial correspondences, alongside photographic records and archives they amassed, serve as invaluable resources for historical research. Pełny tekst źródłaOur research focuses on the entrepreneurial process and more precisely on the trigger phase. We take our definition of the trigger phase from Bruyat's (1993) model: the individual seriously considers the opportunity to start a business; he devotes time and resources to his project, he acts upon this intention. In order to model this trigger we use two main ideas (intention and displacement) as well as the following researchers' work: Shapero et Sokol (1982), Ajzen (1991) and Kreuger and Carsrud (1993). We study the case of French engineers, our starting point is a database initiated by Fayolle (1996). We focus on two groups of engineers in particular. The first group of engineers did not become entrepreneurs but had the short-term objective to start a business at the time of the study. The second group was made up of engineers who did not become entrepreneurs and who never wanted to. There are two steps in our methodology: firstly a quantitative investigation, and secondly a qualitative study. We test the two trigger antecedents that we retained in our conceptual model. We also identify eight career paths. We then look more closely into each career path through semi-directive interviews. This leads us to consider the trigger, not only in terms of pre-identified variables but in a more general way. Two determining dimensions become clear. Firstly, we notice that the trigger processes evolve differently over time. Secondly, the intensity and consequences of displacements may be perceived in different ways by individuals. This leads us to propose a cartography which enables to identify four trigger phase processes

Pełny tekst źródłaThe recent evolution of the industrial world has resulted in changes in the role of engineers for whom communication skills are increasingly necessary. Moreover, communicating at an international level implies a command of English. This new dimension must be taken into account during their training. By means of questionnaires sent to INSA graduates the situations in which an engineer needs to use English were identified. An analysis of these situations established the skills and qualities required. After a comparative study of English courses in the engineering schools of the academy of Toulouse which underlines the constraints, motivations and pedagogical approaches in practice, recommendations are made in order to adapt them to the new professional needs of engineers. The English curriculum should be built around three poles : the study of the language, the preparation of professional tasks and the development of personal qualities which facilitate international communication. Examples of appropriate activities are given to illustrate the preparation of these three interdependent aspects

Pełny tekst źródłaThroughout the 19th century, the constant increase in demand for lead prompted the search for new mineral resources in the Mediterranean region. The region of Lavrion, on the east coast of Attica, in Greece, known since ancient times for its metal deposits, rich in silver and lead, was rediscovered by French entrepreneurs, who were ready to invest considerable capital and to establish their new industries. First, they undertook the exploitation of the slag left on the surface by the ancient Greek miners, then they established a new mining Company for the exploitation of lead and zinc metal deposits. Founded in 1875, the French Company of mines of Lavrion became the nucleus of modern industrial development and the center of innovation in metallurgy for over a century. The French engineers, employed in the Laurion mines, supervised the works of mining exploration, and the installation of the large laundries for the treatment of lead and zinc ores, introducing modern technology and new devices. Furthermore, they undertook the installation of a new port in Lavrion, of a network of gravel roads and of a modern railway, built lodgings for the employees of the entreprise, planned a company town, one of the first in Greece, and, thus, succeeded in playing a decisive role in the formation of the particular landscape of Laurion. Relying on historical sources in Greece and France and conducting, in parallel, an in situ investigation of the main industrial complex and of the extraction sites of the Lavreotic region, the present research aims to reveal the work of the French engineers of the French Company of mines of Lavrion and their fundamental role in the formation of the modern Laurion

Pełny tekst źródłaWhether Dutch, English or French, civil engineers have long been a recognized authority on coastal management. Through their relentless search for technical innovations, engineers have been instrumental in both shaping the coast – in the case of the Netherlands creating it almost entirely – and imposing on it a technical vision. The social and ecological movement which characterized the 1970’s brought this engineering vision into question. This change in outlook would create real turmoil for the profession. This comparative study attempts to explain how nowadays engineers envision the coast they manage and how, in collaboration with other scientists, they now derive innovative solutions in line with an integrated coastal management. It appears that the classical opposition, between a vision long imputed to engineers of a static and linear coast and one attributed to other scientists who view the coast as something larger and more systemic, has become blurred. Cultural differences between the three countries are more relevant to explain the differences observed. Into the bargain engineers seem to have overtaken the “green” movement of the last decades to seize new opportunities, professional ones as well as territorial

Met hun niet aflatende zoektocht naar innovatieve technieken hebben ze een bijdrage geleverd aan het vormen van de kustlijn – of om het even welke deel van Nederland dan ook – en hebben ze de kustlijn gevormd op een technocratische wijze. De ecologische en sociale omwenteling, kenmerkend voor de jaren ’70, heeft vraagtekens gezet bij deze, door ingenieurs opgelegde, visie en veroorzaakte een serieuze omwenteling in het vakgebied. Deze studie probeert uit te leggen hoe de ingenieur vandaag de dag de kust behartigt en hij hoe tegenwoordig in overleg met andere wetenschappen nieuwe oplossingen ontwikkelt die in lijn zijn met een integraal kustbeheer. Het blijkt dat het onderscheid tussen de rechtlijnige en statische visie over de kust, lang toegeschreven aan ingenieurs, en de bredere en systematische aanpak, over het algemeen toegeschreven aan andere wetenschappers, vervaagt. Culturele verschillen tussen de drie landen lijken een belangrijkere reden te zijn voor de geconstateerde ontwikkelingen. Daarnaast lijken de ingenieurs zich de "groene" kennis in de afgelopen decennia eigen gemaakt te hebben om nieuwe kansen te grijpen, zowel voor hun vak als voor hun omgeving

Pełny tekst źródłaThe implementation of the french maritime signalisation was led in France by the Central Service of Lighthouses and Beacons which privileged, from 1823, the use of level lenses invented by Augustin Fresnel. To conceive these new equipments in mass production, this State Administration appealed to various subcontractors whom it has widely supported or created. This particular collaboration between a State Department and Private Investors resulted in the creation of three national companies (Barbier-Bénard and Turenne, Sautter-Harlé, Henry-Lepaute) which produced 76 % of the lighthouses of the world in 1933. However if this industrial presence seems important, the reading of the various reports or the files of the French engineers concerning their relations with these suppliers gives only a very weak idea. The work of the Lighthouse Manufacturers was so widely underestimated. This thesis thus agrees to study the economic and social factors which allowed the emergence, the life then the end of these companies, the roles and the contributions of the manufacturers and the engineers "des Ponts et Chaussées" and the various relations or the tensions which existed in this couple combine during more than hundred years. Finally, a world vision of the setting-up of the maritime road marking is proposed through the international competition, which is set up from 1850 with the English Chance Brothers or the German Wilhelm Weule. In a more general way, it describes the complex relations and the competition, which existed between the scholars of the XVIIIth or XIXth century and the private enterprises with capital-intensive vocation

In order to question collaborative practices and their associated values, two case studies have been carried. Following an intercultural approach, the first study compares social representations of collaboration, “ideal” and situated, of engineering-students of Telecom ParisTech in France and TokyoTech in Japan. According to a developmental and dialogic approach, the second study analyses the development and the quality of cultures of collaboration in interactions of two groups of Telecom ParisTech engineering-students taking part in the PACT course, whose aim is to encourage collaborative learning in creative engineering design activities. A multi-dimensional assessment method of the quality of collaboration (“Q.C2”), based on a previous version (“Q.C”), has been developed within the framework of the analysis of these two studies. Empirical contributions of this work allow the identification of the influence of cultural context, of temporality and of the quality of affective dimensions of activity on the development, the nature and the objectives of collaboration, understood in terms of the concept of cultures of collaboration

Pełny tekst źródłaThis thesis reports on research conducted between 2015 and 2019 at the Southwest Jiaotong University in China and in the Group of French Central Schools, on the preparation of Chinese engineering students for academic mobility in France. Based on empirically identified needs, the decision was made to focus on work meetings, which play a major role in engineeringschools but are still absent from the educational materials published in FOU.Within the framework of French for University Objectives (FUO), this research is comprised of two inseparable stages. The first is fieldwork conducted during one year, which allowed us to analyze the issues, communicative situations, and discourses within the curriculum of a Central School in Lyon, and to collect large amounts of video data related to work meetings. The data analysis was held up to the theoretical framework of FUO, which was partly put into question regarding the possibility of using existing data collected in the field as training materials for FUO.The second stage is the elaboration of a FUO program aimed at meeting the linguistic training needs of Chinese engineering students in relation to group work and work meetings in the Central School. This program was created from the data collected during the first stage.This thesis includes a reflection on a key aspect of French for Specific Objectives (FSO) and FUO, namely the feasibility and the study of the institutional roadblocks to the effective implementation of innovative programs aimed at improving the mobility of certain students
