Pełny tekst źródłaNowadays digital documents represent a complex and heterogeneous mixture of text, structure, meta-data and multimedia information. The XML description language is now the standard used to represent such documents in digital libraries, product catalogues, scientific data repositories and across the Web. The management of semi structured data requires the development of appropriate indexing, filtering, searching and browsing methods and tools. In particular, the filtering and searching functions of the retrieval systems should be able to answer queries having an incomplete, imprecise or even erroneous knowledge about both the structure and the content of the XML documents. Moreover, these functions should maintain an algorithmic complexity compatible with the complexity of the data while maintaining the scalability of the system. In this thesis, we explore methods for managing and searching collections of heterogeneous multimedia XML documents. We focus on the flexible searching of structure, text, and sequential data embedded in heterogeneous XML document databases. Based on the structural part of the XML documents, we propose a flexible model for the representation, indexing and retrieval of heterogeneous types of sequential data. The matching mechanism simultaneously exploits the structural organization of the sequential/textual data as well as the relevance and the characteristics of the unstructured content of the indexed documents. We also design and evaluate methods both for the approximate matching of structural constraints in an XML Information Retrieval (IR) framework and for the detection of best entry points to locate given topics in XML Documents. Finally, we explore the use of dedicated hardware architecture to accelerate the most expensive processing steps of our XML IR application

Pełny tekst źródłaAttention is a scarce resource. This study investigates the problem of the limited consumer's attention span and its impact on Internet advertising markets. For this, I explore Korean search engine market and present a structural model of the demand for the display advertising where the limited attention of website users is considered.The theoretical model assumes that the users' attention is distributed heterogeneously in constructing advertising demand.I show that the monopoly platform would send excessive messages in this setting and that the probability of message process differs by characteristics of users and websites.A random-coefficient discrete choice model is used to formulate the user demand function. Having two demand functions at hand, a markup is derived from the platform's profit function and is shown to have three components: Lerner's index, a network effect from user side, and the congestion effect.The reduced-form estimation models are, then, discussed. These estimations are to explore the market characteristics and to find preliminary evidences of the information congestion in Korean Internet search engine market.For the structural estimation, I simulate the probability that a user pays attention to a message posted on the website. This, in turn allows me to identify the extent to which information congestion affects the advertising demand.The estimated model enables me to predict a probability that a message is seen by a user of one particular website in a given month. The probability ranges from .19 to .58 across websites and it depends on gender, age, and education level of website users. I also find that 1% increase in ad level drops 0.06% of user's message process.I separately estimate the user demand function and find that advertising is a nuisance for 92.17% of users. Using estimates from both demands, I find that the externality from the limited attention is an important determinant of the platform's markup.The study shows that the ad level on a website is systematically below the social optimum level, implying that the website's market power leads to a decrease in quantity beyond what would be socially optimal in view of the negative externality from information congestion.The corresponding deadweight loss and the surplus gain for the society are estimated.I perform a counterfactual experiment on the impact of introducing ad avoidance options on websites. From the experiment, I find that ad levels decrease in the share of ad-avoiders because the platform's valuation on users rises in average attention. These results may stress the importance of users' limited attention in the demand estimation of monopoly media markets

Pełny tekst źródłaThe properties of road networks vary considerably from one geographical environment to another. The networks pertaining in a satellite image can therefore be used to classify and retrieve such environments. In this work, we propose to classy geographical environment using geometrical and topological features computed from the road networks. The limitations of road extraction methods in dense urban areas was circumvented by segmenting the urban regions and computing a second set of geometrical and topological features from them. The small images forming our database were extracted from images of the SPOT5 satellite with 5m resolution (each image of size 512x512 pixels). The set of geometrical and topological features computed from the road networks and urban regions are used to classify the pre-defined geographical classes. In order to avoid the burden of feature dimensionality and reduce the classification performance, feature selection was performed using Fisher Linear Discriminant (FLD) analysis and an one-vs-rest linear Support Vector Machine (SVM classification was performed on the selected feature set. The impact of spatial resolution and size of images on the feature set have been explored. Tests were performed on a database with images of 10m resolution and on a database with 5m resolution images each of size 256x256 pixels. This approach allows also to classify large SPOT5 images with patches of size 512x512. In this case, a one-vs-rest Gaussian kernel svrv classification method was used to classify this large image. The classification labels the image patch es with the one having the maximum geographical coverage of the area associated in the large image

Pełny tekst źródłaA key characteristic of the process of economic development is the shrinking spatial mismatch between economic activity and population. This thesis analyzes what happens when this spatial mismatch is reduced, as people’s places of residence and work or the geographical distribution of economic activity is altered. Chapter I deals with the relationship between international migrants and their households of origin. It sheds light on the importance for remittances and investments of migrants' beliefs and the information asymmetry between remittance senders and recipients that distance aggravates. Chapter II explores the transformation of the receiving economy due to an influx of rural-to-urban migrants in China. It first quantifies the effect of immigrants on the labor market at destination, and then investigates their impact on the reallocation of production factors and factor-market constraints faced by urban firms. Chapter III focuses on the long-term impact of a large industrialization plan in China. It reveals a reversal pattern due to the distortions in local labor markets induced by the presence of big plants. It highlights the role of migration in overcoming such imperfections and in bringing about the later stage of structural transformation—from heavy industry to consumption goods and services

Pełny tekst źródłaA synthesis pathway is, for a given molecule, a sequence of reactions making possible to obtain it from purchasable molecules or easily synthesizable. In chemoinformatics, predicting or assisting the conception of synthesis pathways for new molecules is a challenge. It consists in analyzing the very large databases of existing molecular reactions to build new synthesis pathways from existing plans of similar molecules. In this context, the similarity between molecules relies on their topology.We introduce a structural representation of molecules called the graph of cycles. This representation is based on the cycles in the molecular graph and their interconnections.This representation is canonical and allows us to define a similarity measure between structures of molecules and is computable in a reasonable amount of time. Our studies show that it is more adapted for works on synthesis pathways than the other existing similarity measures.Based on the graph of cycles, we proposed a classification of reactions according to the effects on the structure of molecules. This is the first step for the prediction of synthesis pathways

Pełny tekst źródłaThis thesis studies the capabilities of machine learning methods for reasoning on spatial relationships, with a particular focus on directional relationships, and the use of prior relational information by these methods. There are many works in the field of applying knowledge on relationships to machine learning methods. However, this body of work still leaves several open questions. Throughout this thesis, we explore, investigate and attempt to explain different research questions linked to this field.We propose an improvement to the training of CNNs via a regularisation loss function based on relational information. To this end, we propose two novel loss functions which reward relationship satisfaction during CNN training, and design synthetic experiments to showcase their impact. While the proposed loss functions show improvements over an unmodified baseline in specific, strict synthetic scenarios, the impact on more ``generic'' training scenarios is less significant. This result is not easily explainable, as neural network training is a significantly opaque process, and as such, a deeper exploration is required to understand how a CNN learns (or fails to learn) to reason using relational information.To further understanding of how a CNN can learn to reason using relational information, we propose a wide array of distinct synthetic experiments. We explore the processes which enable, facilitate, or hinder ``standard'' CNN reasoning on relationships. We propose a fundamental experience to demonstrate that a basic, unmodified CNN is capable of relational reasoning in some scenarios. Next, we explore which relationships are learned by the CNN, by performing inference on scenes where the prior relationships are disturbed, by recording the difference in the results, and by training and testing CNNs on synthetic data with more or less relationships available. We then investigate the limits placed on relational reasoning by the network receptive field, as well as deepen our analysis on situations where the amount of training data is insufficient. Finally, we explore at which moment during training relationships are satisfied, as a proxy for understanding at which moment the relationships themselves are learned.Following a graph-clustering approach to the usage of relational information, we explore prior relationships in a different machine learning context, that of community discovery on graphs. We formulate graph clustering as an inexact matching problem between the graph to be clustered and a model graph which encodes prior knowledge on how the communities or clusters relate to each other. We compare this approach with traditional graph clustering approaches on a set of synthetic graphs, to showcase the advantages of a relational-aware approach, as well as on real graphs

Pełny tekst źródłaSocial networks are large structures that depict social linkage between millions of actors. Social network analysis came out as a tool to study and monitor the patterning of such structures. One of the most important challenges in social network analysis is the link prediction problem. Link prediction investigates the potential existence of new associations among unlinked social entities. Most link prediction approaches focus on a single source of information, i.e. network topology (e.g. node neighborhood) assuming social data to be fully trustworthy. Yet, such data are usually noisy, missing and prone to observation errors causing distortions and likely inaccurate results. Thus, this thesis proposes to handle the link prediction problem under uncertainty. First, two new graph-based models for uniplex and multiplex social networks are introduced to address uncertainty in social data. The handled uncertainty appears at the links level and is represented and managed through the belief function theory framework. Next, we present eight link prediction methods using belief functions based on different sources of information in uniplex and multiplex social networks. Our proposals build upon the available information in data about the social network. We combine structural information to social circles information and node attributes along with supervised learning to predict new links. Tests are performed to validate the feasibility and the interest of our link prediction approaches compared to the ones from literature. Obtained results on social data from real-world demonstrate that our proposals are relevant and valid in the link prediction context
