Introducción. La eficiencia de absorción y removilización de una molécula o compuesto químico aplicado a un sistema biológico depende de interacciones entre factores bióticos y abióticos. Para el caso de vegetales, destaca la composición físico-química y concentración de la molécula, el estado fisiológico del órgano donde se aplica y el manejo del producto (dosis y forma de aplicación). Existen diferentes tecnologías a base de compuestos químicos tensoactivos que permiten aumentar la absorción del compuesto aplicado en plantas de interés agrícola. El objetivo de este trabajo fue evaluar el efecto del surfactante INEX-A (COSMOCELMR) sobre la absorción de compuestos con actividad sistémica comúnmente aplicados en la agricultura a través del marcaje isotópico bajo condiciones de invernadero.Métodos. Se desarrollaron los ensayos siguientes: 1) herbicida (14C-Glifosato) aplicado vía foliar en zacate Johnson (Sorghum halepense), 2) insecticida (14C-Imidacloprid) aplicado vía foliar, 3) insecticida (14C-Imidacloprid) aplicado vía suelo y 4) nutrimento (32P-Fosfato de amonio monobásico) aplicado vía foliar en tomate (Lycopersicum esculentum).Resultados. El efecto del surfactante INEX-A aumentó la absorción de las moléculas en estudio en comparación con los tratamientos donde no se aplicó éste surfactante, esto generó una mayor removilización de las moléculas y probablemente una mayor producción de metabolitos secundarios que tienen como origen o intermediario a dichas moléculas. El efecto del surfactante INEX-A osciló en el rango 22-100 % en relación al incremento de la absorción de las moléculas en estudio. Cuando se aplicó el surfactante INEX-A se incrementó 12 veces la absorción del insecticida 14C-Imidacloprid aplicado vía foliar. Asimismo, la removilización hacia el grupo de hojas superiores vs. hojas inferiores fue mayor. Además, el efecto del INEX-A presentó una relación directa en función al tipo de molécula y la forma de aplicación, disminuyendo en el orden siguiente: 14C-Imidacloprid (foliar)>14C-Glifosato (foliar)>14C-Imidacloprid (suelo)>32P-Fosfato de amonio monobásico (foliar).Conclusiones. El surfactante INEX-A (COSMOCELMR) incrementa significativamente la absorción de diferentes compuestos en plantas de importancia económica.

Since their first isolation in 2013, influenza A/H5N6 viruses have spread amongst poultry across multiple provinces in China and to Laos, Vietnam and Myanmar. So far, there have been 14 human H5N6 infections with 10 fatalities.We investigated the tropism, replication competence and cytokine induction of one human and two avian H5N6 isolates inex vivoandin vitrocultures derived from the human respiratory tract. Virus tropism and replication were studied inex vivocultures of human nasopharynx, bronchus and lung. Induction of cytokines and chemokines was measuredin vitroin virus-infected primary human alveolar epithelial cells.Human H5N6 virus replicated more efficiently than highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 virus and as efficiently as H1N1pdm inex vivohuman bronchus and lung and was also able to replicate inex vivocultures of human nasopharynx. Avian H5N6 viruses replicated less efficiently than H1N1pdm in human bronchial tissues and to similar titres as HPAI H5N1 in the lung. While the human H5N6 virus had affinity for avian-like receptors, the two avian isolates had binding affinity for both avian- and human-like receptors. All three H5N6 viruses were less potent inducers of pro-inflammatory cytokines compared with H5N1 virus.Human H5N6 virus appears better adapted to infect the human airways than H5N1 virus and may pose a significant public health threat.

Due to the growing engagement of youth in water polo practice, we aimed to characterize age-grouped players across anthropometric, general and specific motor abilities and contextual domains. We have also examined the associations of players’ specific skills with their anthropometric and general motor characteristics. One-hundred-and-one male water polo players, grouped into 12-, 13- and 14-year age cohorts were recruited. One-way ANOVA explained age-cohort variance, and a multiple linear regression was used to assess the association between variables. The variance in cohorts was explained by arm span (25%), stature, hand breadth and length (17%) fat-free mass (18%), 20 m sprint (16%), sit-ups (18%), medicine ball throw (27%), anaerobic (31%) and aerobic performance (21%), change of direction (18%), and in-water vertical jump (14%). The variance of in-water vertical jump, 10 m sprint, change of direction and aerobic fitness for players’ anthropometric characteristics were, 32, 25, 14 and 10% (respectively). The players’ upper-limb explosive power explained 30, 22 and 17% of variance for in-water vertical jump, 10 m sprint and aerobic fitness, respectively. Body mass had an inverse, and arm span had a direct association with in-water vertical jump and swim velocity capability, arm span had an inverse and direct association with change of direction and aerobic fitness, respectively. The upper limbs’ explosive power related directly to in-water vertical jump and aerobic fitness skills, but inversely with 10 m sprint scores.

This study investigated developmental stability, or tracking, in the development of technical skills in youth male basketball players and retrospectively profiled stable and unstable tracking patterns over time. A total of 97 basketball players were tracked bi-annually over 3 consecutive years. Players were divided into two age-categories according to their age at baseline: under-12; and under-14. Technical skills were assessed using the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance test battery. Anthropometric, body composition, biological maturation and physical performance data were collected. Cohen’s kappa (κ) was used to estimate tracking. With the exception of defensive movement in the under-12 age-category, tracking was low in all skill tests for both under-12 (0.22 ≤ κ ≤ 0.33) and -14 (0.20 ≤ κ ≤ 0.26) groupings. The overall technical skill showed moderate tracking for under-12 players (κ = 0.47) and low tracking for under-14 players (κ = 0.26). At baseline, players who were consistently more skilled or became more skillful (in the under-12 age-category) over time had a better growth-motor performance profile and most of them were selected to be members of regional teams. In conclusion, tracking of individual skill trajectories was low-to-moderate. Moreover, a better growth-motor performance profile seems crucial to maintain high levels of skill performance over time. It is recommended that basketball coaches track the developmental trajectories of their players to better understand the erratic nature of skill development and help design more effective practice regimes.

Although successful performance in basketball requires high levels of muscular strength during adolescence, its development is confounded by the effects of normal growth. We examine the timing, intensity and sequence of muscular strength according to biological age (years from peak height velocity (PHV)) and hypothesize that young basketball players attain their peak muscular strength spurts around PHV. A total of 160 adolescent male basketballers, aged 11–15 years, were followed bi-annually over 3 consecutive years. The years from attainment of PHV and peak weight velocity (PWV) were estimated and five muscular strength measures (sit-ups, handgrip, seated medicine ball throw, squat jump and countermovement jump) were aligned to years from PHV in 3-month intervals. Strength velocities were estimated using a non-smooth mathematical model. The mean ages at-PHV and at-PWV were 13.90 ± 1.40 years and 13.90 ± 1.79 years, respectively. Maximal velocity in sit-ups was attained 6 months prior to attainment of PHV (intensity = 10.69 repetitions·year−1), whereas maximal velocity in squat jump occurred 6 months after-PHV (intensity = 3.93 cm·year−1). Handgrip strength, seated medicine ball throw and countermovement jump maximal velocity peaked at-PHV (intensity = 8.47 kgf·year−1, intensity = 0.75 m·year−1, intensity = 5.59 cm·year−1, respectively). In general, maximal velocity spurts did not differ in their timing, with the velocities reaching a peak concurrent with PHV and PWV or within 6 months of its attainment. Basketball coaches, as well as strength and conditioning trainers, should consider individual differences in strength development and be aware of rapid periods of growth in stature when planning and designing muscular strength training regimes.

AbstractThe multidisciplinary nature and lack of comprehensive ‘materials-product-manufacturing’ knowledge of Functionally Graded Additive Manufacturing (FGAM) require training to support the future Additive Manufacturing experts. INEX-ADAM, an EU funded project is building a transnational platform to promote FGAM. Brunel University London conducted two-day workshop on FGAM at the University of Zagreb in Croatia with academics and industry professionals. The workshop will strengthen the research capabilities to harness the potential of the FGAM and mitigate the constraints to industrial applications.
