This paper, introduced an expression of Economic Efficiency Measure (EEM) to permit quick evaluation for replacement of faulty induction motor with alternative (new or refurbished motor) for lowest life-cycle cost based on efficiency and rated-load conditions. This approach, simplifies the process for evaluating the energy efficiency to mere proportionate factor called as EEM. During the operating phase, the motor losses correspond to extra energy consumption, based on various parameters like motor operating conditions, operating hours, operating costs, fault factor, depreciation factor and fixed costs. The approach is effective in addressing the global issue on replacement of the faulty motor that needs a comprehensive analysis and mathematical expression. Compared to other alternatives the EEM provides a simple but effective and reliable means to asses, the feasibility of replacing or refurbishing the faulty motor. A detail analysis here would establish how much the present approach is effective in determining the replacement for a faulty induction motor either by a new one or refurbished one of corresponding rating.

A three-phase induction motor absorbs the most electric power among other electrical loads. Therefore, three-phase induction motors are the primary electric motors used in industrial applications thanks to their simple construction and easy operation, as well as low cost and low maintenance costs. Efficiency is a critical parameter that characterizes an induction motor as a traction motor. The traction motor is defined as the engine's effectiveness in converting electrical power at its input into mechanical energy by rotating torque on its axis. One way to analyze the efficiency is to use test data obtained from laboratory tests in case-loaded and no-load tests. Calculations using several formulas on the efficiency of an induction motor as a traction motor produce the same result, namely the efficiency of 98.6% by applying variable frequency drive (VFD). The result of laboratory tests and their analysis can be used as a reference for designing three-phase induction motors for railway traction motors, especially traction motors for high-speed trains.

Brushless DC (BLDC) motors have a wide range of applications in these modern days, such as electric vehicles, industrial robots, washing machines, pumps, and blowers. The brushless DC motors have many advantages when compared to induction motors and conventional DC motors, such as better speed control, noiseless operation, high efficiency, less maintenance, and a long life. Along with these benefits, there is one major disadvantage known as cogging, which causes undesirable effects in the motor such as noises and vibrations. BLDC motors have been widely used in automation and industrial applications due to their attractive features. There are certain parameters to be considered while designing a BLDC motor, such as its dimensions, number of windings turns, type of magnetic materials used, required torque, output current, slot-to-depth ratio, efficiency, temperature rise, etc.

This paper presents a simulation method for the power consumption of servo motors, focusing on the influence of vibrations on the motor efficiency. An apparatus consisting of two servo motors connected through a coupling was specifically designed for this study. The efficiency of the servo motor was experimentally investigated for several torque vibration levels imposed through the selection of the control parameters, and the torque vibration level was quantified through the standard deviation of the torque signal. The efficiency map characteristics for each torque oscillating level were determined. A numerical model of the apparatus clarifying the dependency of the coupling characteristics on the oscillating torque was developed, and the torque oscillation of the system was simulated. A model based on the measured motor efficiency maps and the torque oscillation level was developed to simulate the motor efficiency under several torque vibrating conditions. Finally, the power consumption of the motor was simulated based on the simulated efficiency and mechanical power. A balance of input, output, and loss powers was presented, and the experimental measurements were compared with the simulation results. The power consumption of the motor increased when the torque oscillated owing to vibrations, and the loss of power due to both oscillations and the loss of motor efficiency was quantified.

Abstract Asynchronous motors are commonly utilized in industrial and agricultural production due to their inexpensive manufacturing cost and reliable structure. However, due to the demands of production and everyday usage, these motors may be operated at no or light load for long periods of time, resulting in a decrease in the efficiency of the motor system. A model-referenced adaptive parameter identification in combination with a particle swarm algorithm is proposed in this paper to enhance the operating efficiency of asynchronous motors. This control strategy can reduce motor power loss and improve efficiency. Simulation model is established and simulation results are provided to verify the feasibility of the proposed control strategy for optimizing the efficiency of asynchronous motors.

Although three-phase induction motors are the most common motor type in industry, a growing interest has arisen in emerging electric motor technologies like synchronous reluctance motors and permanent magnet motors. Synchronous reluctance motors are a step forward compared to permanent magnet motors when the cost of the system is considered. The main focus of this study is low-power industrial applications, which generally use three-phase induction motors. In this study, the synchronous reluctance motor family is compared at three different power levels: 2.2 kW, 4 kW, and 5.5 kW. The aim of this study is to design and compare synchronous reluctance motors, which can be alternative to the reference induction motors. Finite element analysis is performed for the reference induction motors initially. Their stators are kept the same and the rotors are redesigned to satisfy output power requirements of the induction motors. Detailed design, analysis, and optimization processes are applied to the synchronous reluctance motors considering efficiency, power density, and manufacturing. The results are evaluated, and the optimized designs are chosen for each power level. They are prototyped and tested to measure their performance.

Induction motors are the most electric motors widely used in the community, both in the industrial and in the household applications. The power and efficiency of the motors are determined by the type of ferromagnetic material used in the core of the motor. If a very good ferromagnetic material with high permeability is applied to the core of the induction motor, then both the energy conversion and the efficiency of the motor will increase. But, if the ferromagnetic material is not good with low permeability is used in the induction motor, of course, the conversion of energy generated by the motor will be low so that the motor efficiency becomes decreased. In other cases, when ferromagnetic materials with high permeability are used, these ferromagnetic materials will become more fragile than using ferromagnetic materials with lower permeability. Therefore, a good strategy is needed in designing the core material of the induction motor. This study was intended to provide an overview of the potential use of a composite material of Fe and ferromagnetic material that was made in the Graded Magnetostrictive Layers. This research was conducted using several studies of the results of research on the composite material of the magnet. The results of the study show that a composite material of Fe and ferromagnetic materials provided a great potential in applying to induction motors to increase power and efficiency of the motor.

Energy efficient motors are the key components of each industrial process. In the energy demanding society, requiring the energy efficient consumers, the line-start synchronous motor has gained more and more popularity due to the high efficiency and power factor combined with good operational characteristics. The disadvantages of the synchronous motors such as inability of starting without the inverter has been largely overcame with this type of the motor. However, the proper design of line-start motor regarding permanent magnets and the squirrel cage winding is crucial for motor starting and synchronization capability. In this paper, the line-start synchronous motor is derived from the asynchronous motor by redesigning the rotor. The obtained performance characteristics of the synchronous motor is compared with the data of the asynchronous motor (the analytical, measurements and from the motor producer) and they show reasonable agreement. The derived model of the synchronous motor is numerically modelled for obtaining the magnetic flux density distribution in the motor cross-section. The analysis and comparison is completed by obtaining the transient characteristics of both types of the motors. The designed synchronous motor has proven to have good starting and synchronization capabilities combined with the high efficiency. The dynamic response at sudden load changes is within expected limits.

Bearing is an induction motor component that helps the rotor to move freely, in industrial applications it is important to maintain bearing performance in induction motors. In its use, bearing damage is one of the biggest types of damage that is often found in induction motors. Bearing damage can lead to increased vibration, increased noise, increased working temperature, and decreased efficiency. Efficiency reduction can be used as information on the condition of the motor so that this information can be used to detect damage before more serious damage occurs. This research discusses the stator current analysis method and the efficiency of damage to the motor through two harmonic amplitude ratios equipped with the fast Fourier transform (FFT) algorithm in detecting damage to the outer race bearing. It is hoped that this efficiency can be used as an evaluation of the extent to which motor energy waste occurs before more severe damage. The efficiency results on the damage to the outer race bearing using the FFT method get the highest efficiency value of 1.47 and the lowest value of 0.66.

Heat generation that affects the ’performance and lifespan of the motor's, are the primary problem with asynchronous motors. These entities are primarily the result of inadequate electrical motor insulation, which can be avoided by utilizing enamel-filled Nano filler insulation. It has been demonstrated over the past few decades that including a Nano filler to enamel utilized in induction motors has improved its characteristics. This study investigates the performance of asynchronous motor coated with Nano filler consisting of Al2O3 and Zn O along with enamel. The motor's efficiency, power factor, torque, and other parameters are analysed before and after the Nano coat. The findings demonstrated that the Nano coating technology significantly improved the motor's efficiency, power factor, and torque, indicating a reduction in energy losses due to friction and heat. The study suggests that the use of hybrid Nano filler can be a valuable investment for industrial applications that require high reliability and efficiency.

Induction motors are alternating current motors that are most often used in the industrial world. Induction motors are used as pumps, compressors, fans, conveyors, and supporting other production propulsion equipment. The use of induction motors in industry is more profitable than DC motors or synchronous motors, one of the advantages is a strong and durable construction and easy maintenance and high efficiency. The problem of one of the open stator phases is one of the problems in the operation of an induction motor. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct a study in the form of analysis and research in the laboratory to see how the opening of one of the stator phases affects the performance and temperature rise of the induction motor. The test is carried out by overloading the induction motor by 0.5 Nm; 1.0 Nm; 1.5 Nm; 2.0 Nm; 2.5 Nm; 3.0 Nm. From the research conducted, it can be concluded that, among others, the opening of a single stator phase results in greater motor losses and an increase in motor temperature. Motor efficiency is better when the motor is in normal phase condition.

Induction motors are key pieces of equipment in today’s society, powering a variety of industrial drives and home appliances. The induction motor speed is often used to monitor the performance of all kinds of industrial drives. For example, in the industrial field, the motor speed is very often used to determine the efficiency and mechanical load of motors. In this work, a new simple, low-cost, and nonintrusive procedure is proposed for infield measurement of induction motors speed, which is based on the spectral analysis of the vibration signal of the motors. The motor vibration signal is first acquired using the accelerometers integrated into a basic phone. The acquired signal is then treated by a MATLAB-based algorithm, which can determine the motor speed by identifying the mechanical frequency of the rotor shaft from the harmonic content of the vibration signal. In this way, it is shown that the mechanical frequency corresponding to the speed of rotation of the motors can be acquired by means of the embedded accelerometers of a common smartphone, avoiding the acquisition and installation of external accelerometers. To the authors’ knowledge, this could be the first time that a smartphone has been proposed as a practical means of measuring the speed of a motor by analysing its vibration. Experimental results from an extensive set of tests, including the supply of the motor from a frequency converter, show that the speed can always be measured with a relative error of less than 0.15%.

Electric cars are typically subject to highly variable operational conditions, especially when they drive in urban environments. Consequently, the efficiency of the electric motors may degrade significantly, possibly leading to lower autonomy and higher running costs. Latest advances in power electronics and motion control have paved the way to the development of novel architectures of full electric power transmissions. In this paper, a dual-motor solution is proposed where two smaller motors are coupled via a planetary gear, in contrast to the standard configuration that uses one larger motor directly connected to the drive wheels with a fixed ratio reducer. The dual-motor architecture guarantees that both motors operate in the vicinity of their optimal working range, resulting in a higher overall energy efficiency. The technical requirements and the control strategy of the dual-motor system are selected through a parametric optimization process. Results included were obtained from extensive simulations performed over different standard driving cycles, showing that the dual-motor power transmission generally outperforms the single-motor counterpart with an average efficiency improvement of about 9% that is reached in both the power delivery and regeneration stage.

Abstract. Energy savings and greenhouse gas emission reductions are increasingly becoming important design targets in many industrial systems where fossil fuel based electrical energy is heavily utilised. In water distribution systems (WDSs) a significant portion of operational cost is related to pumping. Recent studies have considered variable speed pumps (VSPs) which aim to vary the operating point of the pump to match demand to pumping rate. Depending on the system characteristics, this approach can lead to considerable savings in operational costs. In particular, cost reductions can take advantage of the demand variability and can decrease energy consumption significantly. One of the issues in using variable speed pumping systems, however, is the total efficiency of the electric motor/pump arrangement under a given operating condition. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive discussion about the components of WDS that incorporate variable speed pumps (including electric motors, variable frequency drives and the pumps themselves) to provide an insight of ways of increasing the system efficiency and hence to reduce energy consumption. In addition, specific attention is given to selection of motor types, sizing, duty cycle of pump (ratio of on-time and time period), losses due to installation and motor faults. All these factors affect the efficiency of motor drive/pump system.

This paper aims to provide a comprehensive discussion about the components of WDS that incorporate variable speed pumps (including electric motors, inverters and the pumps themselves) to provide an insight of ways of increasing the system efficiency and hence to reduce energy consumption. In addition, specific attention is given to selection of motor types, sizing, duty cycle of pump (ratio of on-time and time period), losses due to installation and motor faults. All these factors affect the efficiency of motor drive/pump system.

In recent years, with developing technology in the field of electrical machines, more efficient and high power density electric motors have been produced. The use of high energy efficiency motors gains importance due to the increase in global energy demand. The main purpose of this study was to design an Axial Flux Induction Motor (AFIM) with the same efficiency class as the Radial Flux Induction Motor (RFIM) in premium efficiency (IE3) class which is used commonly in industrial applications. Various AFIMs are designed with different rotor slot numbers and performance analyses as efficiency and torque ripple changes are investigated. It is known that torque ripple is one of the key parameters in electrical machine design which should be kept as low as possible without decreasing efficiency and torque. Accordingly, AFIMs’ rotor slots are skewed considering the stator and rotor slot numbers. The use of a Soft Magnetic Composites (SMC) material in design is also investigated. As a result of the analyses, many premium efficiency classes for AFIMs are obtained. In addition, using SMC material and skewing the rotor slots provides that torque ripples be reduced.

The use of Line-Start Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (LSPMSM) improves the efficiency of conventional direct-on-line electric motor-driven fluid machinery such as pumps and fans. Such motors have increased efficiency compared to induction motors and do not have an excitation winding compared to classical synchronous motors with an excitation winding. However, LSPMSMs have difficulty in starting mechanisms with a high moment of inertia. This problem can be exacerbated by a reduced supply network voltage and a voltage drop on the cable. This article investigates the transients during the startup of an industrial centrifugal pump with a line-start permanent magnet synchronous motor. The simulation results showed that when the voltage on the motor terminals is reduced by 10%, the synchronization is delayed. The use of the cable also leads to a reduction in the voltage at the motor terminals in a steady state, but the time synchronization delay is more significant than that with a corresponding reduction in the supply voltage. The considered simulation example shows that the line-start permanent magnet synchronous motor has no problems with starting the pumping unit, even with a reduced supply voltage. The conclusions of this paper support a wider use of energy-efficient electric motors and can be used when selecting an electric motor to drive a centrifugal pump.

Currently, linear motors find increasingly wide application in various industrial sectors. These motors feature a range of advantages including the absence of compound mechanical power transmissions between a motor and an actuator, simple design, and performance reliability. These advantages determine application of linear motors in electric drive systems of a range of industrial mechanisms including liquid metal and melt transfer units, various transport systems, and metal working and grinding machines. As an illustration, the article addresses submersible cylindrical linear alternating current electronic engines used for rodless oil extraction. Practice shows that the overall efficiency of such units is extremely low. This article is dedicated to the determination of performance and power/angle characteristics of such linear motors, their main energy indicators 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝜑 and efficiency at various supply voltage frequencies. It is shown that 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝜑 at all supply voltage frequencies remains very high, while the efficiency is extremely low. The main way to increase the engine efficiency is to increase the frequency of its supply voltage as much as possible. It is proposed to extend the results obtained to other possible industrial applications of linear electric drives.

Permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM) can be used directly in place of the induction motors (I.M) for several industrial applications since it is characterized by high efficiency, high power factor, and high power compared to I.M. However, this type of motor suffers from some abnormal conditions that result in minimizing power quality such as voltage sags, temporary disturbances, and faults within the network. In this paper, the behavior of PMSM has been studied under the above conditions in a Matlab/Simulink environment. It was noticed that such problems caused an increase in the amount of torque and current in this motor which impacted negatively on the motor speed and influenced the behavior of PMSM.

Three-phase Induction Motors (TPIM) are popular in industrial applications due to their numerous advantages. However, TPIM has comparatively lower efficiency than modern motor technologies like permanent magnet synchronous motor(PMSM), synchronous reluctance motor(SynRM), or switched reluctance motor(SRM). The expensive rare earth material and the inability of line starting operation discourage the replacement of TPIM with these modern energy-efficient motors. This research proposes a novel conversion of TPIM into Line Start SynRM (LS-SynRM) to cause a cost-effective and compatible performance solution. The proposed design modifications are carried out on the existing 0.5HP, TPIM rotor and analyzed using finite element (FE) software. The optimum barrier parameters such as barrier end width, barrier position, barrier width, and rib width have been determined through parametric analysis. The considerable effect of barrier dimensions on motor performance is evident from the analysis.

Electrical machines find their place in every field, such as industrial, transportation, home, and commercial sectors. The suitability of the electrical machine for the area in which it will be used is important in terms of energy efficiency. The selection of the motor to be used for variable speed applications such as electric vehicles is also very important. Torque and power are the determining factors in the required speed/torque or speed/power combination for electric vehicles. For this reason, the efficiency map of the motor to be used in electric vehicles should be known in detail. In this study, due to its advantages such as its lighter structure, absence of magnet, and rotor winding loss, among others, the Axial Flux Synchronous Reluctance Motor (AF-SynRM) was preferred, and it was aimed at creating an efficiency map. The motor parameters for the determined speed/torque combinations were first obtained with FEM. Then, the FEM results were experimentally verified. In order to make the obtained results more meaningful, the experimental results were compared with radial flux motors with the same output power. In addition, using FEM, von Mises stress analysis and displacement analysis were performed on the motor shaft under overload conditions to observe the mechanical effects on the moving parts of the AF-SynRM. Furthermore, mechanical load analysis on the bearings was also performed. The results show that AF-SynRM can be preferred as an alternative to other motor types, especially for applications requiring variable speed, such as electric vehicles. The study has created the efficiency map of the AF-SynRM topology for the first time.

More than 65% of electricity consumed worldwide by the industrial sector is used in electric-motor-driven systems. For this reason, the efficiency of electric motors is an important factor in improving the energy efficiency of the industry. Additionally, this contributes to reducing energy consumption, production costs, as well as CO2eq emissions. The replacement of motors with efficiency class IE1 by motors of efficiency class IE3 is one possible alternative to increase the efficiency of electric motor systems. When a program to replace motors with others of greater efficiency is initiated, it is necessary to casuistically evaluate all identified opportunities. Economic viability can be evaluated using a variety of methods. Often, the methods recommended by manufacturers or consulting entities focus on simple payback time without accounting for all influencing factors. This paper contributes to the academic discussion by proposing a methodology based on the calculation of energy-saving potential, by performing a preliminary an a priori evaluation and determining the economic opportunities. It avoids evaluating all motors in the studied facility and shows its effectiveness by using the cost of energy saved to distinguish which motors to evaluate. Finally, it provides a complete economic evaluation of the final decision on the basis of discounted cash flow methods. A short-production-cycle sugarcane industry was used in the case study.

Competition in the industrial world requires companies to always improve efficiency in the production process. The use of communication technology in the monitoring process is one way to reduce effort in monitoring equipment. This study aims to create a mobile phone-based online control and monitoring system for induction motor parameters in the industry without interfering with the motor's electrical network. The monitoring system is carried out by monitoring the vibration and temperature of the induction motor using the GY-521 MPU-6050 sensor connected to the NodeMCU ESP8266 as the control device. For the data computation process to obtain rotational parameters, the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) function is applied to transform the vibration data from the accelerometer into the frequency domain. In the data collection process, 250 data samples were captured in 1 second which were formed from vibrations of the X, Y and Z direction motors. Manual ON/OFF control of the electric motor and automatic OFF was carried out when a spike in the vibration frequency of the motor was detected. The test was carried out with four variations of rotation conditions. The test results show that the rpm speed of the motor can be obtained based on the difference in the frequency of motor vibration. This data is then sent online to observer technician via the Telegram application installed on the mobile phone device. The system performance as a whole shows quite good performance both in terms of equipment placement, data processing and delivery.

Induction motors are broadly used as drivers of a large variety of industrial equipment. A proper measurement of the motor rotation speed is essential to monitor the performance of most industrial drives. As an example, the measurement of rotor speed is a simple and broadly used industrial method to estimate the motor’s efficiency or mechanical load. In this work, a new low-cost non-intrusive method for in-field motor speed measurement, based on the spectral analysis of the motor audible noise, is proposed. The motor noise is acquired using a smartphone and processed by a MATLAB-based routine, which determines the rotation speed by identifying the rotor shaft mechanical frequency from the harmonic spectrum of the noise signal. This work intends to test the hypothesis that the emitted motor noise, like mechanical vibrations, contains a frequency component due to the rotation speed which, to the authors’ knowledge, has thus far been disregarded for the purpose of speed measurement. The experimental results of a variety of tests, from no load to full load, including the use of a frequency converter, found that relative errors on the speed estimation were always lower than 0.151%. These findings proved the versatility, robustness, and accuracy of the proposed method.

HSPMM and HSPMM of silicon steel DW310_35 stator material. The loss and efficiency characteristics of the two motors under the same operating conditions were tested by the experimental method, and the losses of the two motors at different load rates were compared and analyzed by means of the finite element method. The research results show that at light load, the FeCo_B800 motor stator core loss is lower than the DW310_35 silicon steel sheet motor, and the efficiency advantage is very obvious; however, with the increase of the load rate, the FeCo_B800 motor stator core is seriously saturated, resulting in the distortion of the winding magnetomotive force waveform. The loss caused by the harmonics of the winding magnetomotive force is higher than that of the DW310_35 silicon steel sheet motor, and the efficiency advantage of the FeCo-B800 motor gradually decreases with the increase of the load rate.

Brushless DC motors with outer rotor type are used in applications that require high torque and inertia. The fact that electrical machines have moving parts and the computational complexity created by these parts have led electrical machine designers to alternative ways such as software and simulation programs where the results can be predicted. In this paper, a Brusgless Permanent Magnet Direct Current motor (BLPMDC) was designed and analyzed. The obtained speed, efficiency, torque, and air gap flux distributions were examined and the results were compared with literature for the motor type. In this study, applications were made to examine the effects of design parameters such as rotor structure, rotor position, magnet arrangement and materials used in the structures on the efficiency and output power of the motor. Efficiency-speed and power-speed values were obtained for different structures and features of the engine. The results obtained are compared with each other and presented in the article in the form of graphs and tables.
