Online recruitment research has time and again addressed the issue of lack of credibility of online job advertising media compared to traditional media such as newspapers and the issue of poor quality web design in E-recruitment. In this paper, the issues of lack of credibility and quality of E-recruitment channels have been addressed through the introduction of a) realistic job previews (RJP), b) company independent channels for advertising jobs online (for example Blogs), and c) podcasts for corporate previews in online job website design. Final year post-graduate students about to enter job market (N=457) took part in a 2x2x2 factorial experiment. The findings give distinct indications of the advantage of use of the above mentioned web design features on applicant perception of quality, credibility, and their subsequent development of organizational attractiveness and intention to apply for a job in the firm. Recommendations for practitioners have been highlighted through illustrated examples.

ABSTRACTDespite the perception that department stores are a recent phenomenon in West Africa, modern indoor retail spaces have existed in its major cities since the mid-twentieth century. This article uses the history of Kingsway Department Store in Accra as a lens to understand emerging political, economic and social tensions in post-colonial Ghana. Drawing on United Africa Company (UAC) records, staff reports and inspection findings, as well as local newspapers, advertising and oral interviews, I demonstrate how legacies of colonial capitalism, struggles for political independence and negotiations over what constituted the ‘modern’ fuelled both local and foreign support of the project. For the UAC, investment was an opportunity to legitimize its activities in a newly independent Ghana and a means to shed its image as a colonial merchant firm. While local authorities were divided on whether large-scale retail developments should be part of an expanding post-colonial city, Prime Minister Kwame Nkrumah thought the store might provide a key component in constructing his vision of a new modern nation. However, the presence of white-collar working women, young managers supervising older employees, and the mixing of white expatriate and African shoppers exacerbated social conflicts – challenging local and colonial notions of authority based on race, gender and age.

Traditional institutions are formed to play a vital role in society, this paper examined the roles of traditional rulers in accomplishing stable democracy in Nigerian. Indeed, in the olden days, traditional rulers are believing to be royal fathers in their various domain, and they perform better in accomplishing firm democracy, but with coming of colonialist and democracy, the role of the traditional rulers became less recognized in the democratic system. This paper is qualitative in nature where data were obtained from secondary sources, and systematically reviewed these includes; books, journals, newspapers, magazines, published and unpublished documents. The study found that traditional institutions play a significant role in the olden days. But with the advent of the British colonial master and democracy, their power became less recognized in the democratic movements, this is because the traditional rulers were negated and have less power in the society. In explaining the topic under study, the researcher adopted two theories; these are Servant Leadership theory and Dependency theory, these theories centered on the autonomy of the traditional rulers and the qualities of the rulers in each society. the paper recommended that in order to have a steady democracy traditional institution need to be independent in discharging their duties, they also need to serve their people first not people to serve them. The paper concludes that traditional institutions play an important role in achieving a stable democracy if given autonomy and possess all leadership qualities.

This study aims to determine the increase in critical thinking skills of Visual Communication Design studens at Universitas Dinamika in the mass media. This research focuses on the ability to identify, discover, and solve problems. Researcher used a film medium called "Green Hornet" (2011) by Michel Gondry combined with the discovery learning model. This film tells the story of the production process of the media (newspapers) in the hands of readers. There are interference from media owners, journalists, and other conditions on an issue that will be published by the media. The "discovery learning" model provides an opportunity for students to actively search for, gather, and compile information in order to describe a knowledge. While a lecturer provide data or instructions (models) to find out what students must learn. The lecturer must also review and provide a review of the student's independent learning outcomes. Researcher ask questions that fit the indicators of critical thinking using newspapers and television media. The results of this study were the students' critical thinking skills improved. In cycle 1, students are able to increase their critical power when identifying titles, subtitles, words, phrases, sentences, paragraphs, and captions. Streszczenie:
The Russian media system was during most of the 20th century part of the state institutions. During glasnost and perestroika, the media became gradually more independent of the state. However, the subsequent apex of journalistic freedom in the late 1980s and the early 1990s was followed by stagnation and a pronounced democratic setback following Putin’s accession to power. Despite this, the findings based on qualitative text analysis of articles in the daily press strongly indicate that after 1991 readers of the press are being increasingly addressed as active and knowledgeable citizens, a tendency which is strengthened during the entire period of study. Methods for text examination are speech act and modality analysis, exploring how readers are discursively positioned in the sample text material, which covers the democratically critical time span 1978–2003. The findings imply that although post-Soviet journalism itself faces considerable difficulties, a firm cultural ground for citizen participation in society has been laid through changes in press language.

This paper takes a novel approach to exploring the relationship between fashion salons and sound films in making the image of the modern woman in the 1930s. In this period, liberal cultural tendencies contradicted the increasingly authoritarian political trends in Central Europe. In Hungary, sound films transformed the fashion industry, and fashion salons were quick to respond by creating new clothing for the modern women. This paper investigates the figure of the modern woman as it appeared in newspapers, fashion magazines, and sound films. The type of independent, purposeful woman shown in the films, with her confidence, fashionable costumes, and romance, became an ideal for young women. As dressmakers for film actresses, fashion salons played a significant role in conveying the Western style of dress. They influenced the collective representation of a generation through the representation of film actresses. However, the popularity of the “modern woman” turned out to be temporary in society, which was increasingly subjected to authoritarian policies in the shadow of European fascism. After 1938, the film industry was transformed; film directors and actors or actresses of Jewish origin were forbidden to continue their profession. Curiously, the discriminatory legislation did not touch the fashion salons, which continued to exist and started to produce traditional clothes. This paper puts these contradicting processes in context.

The research aimed to examine the usage of the Javanese language to represent the discourse of nyumbang (donation) in the film Nyumbang produced by Montase Film Independen Yogyakarta. It focused on analyzing the discourse semantics of the Javanese dialogues, which took the style expression ala Kethoprak. The primary data are the Javanese dialogues in the film Nyumbang. At the same time, the supporting data were taken from journals, books, newspapers, websites, and supporting media (audiovisuals, interview results, and other documentation). Data analysis techniques included reduction, presentation, and verification of conclusions related to the research object. The results indicate the utilization of a strong Javanese accent, mostly found in Kethoprak's performance, to represent the problematic discourse of nyumbang. The actors who are the members of the Sanggar Kethoprak Merbabu Budaya, Magelang, speaking in Javanese with the Mataram accent, highlight the problematization of the ideology behind the discourse of nyumbang. The Mataram accent, which is the language style of Kethoprak, added with the helpless facial expressions of the actors, provides the interpretation of the raising question of the nyumbang tradition, which has been embedded in Javanese culture. Through some word choices that are exaggerated to produce a sense of helplessness, the tradition of nyumbang, formerly developed to help each other, becomes a social burden. Thus, the research finds that the film Nyumbang provides an effort to maintain the Kethoprak tradition without abandoning the characteristics of its traditional performances, which contain criticisms of tradition in modern life.

After twenty-three years of the fourth democratic republic in Nigeria, there is a strong temptation to presume that democracy has taken firm roots at the grassroots. However, the whimsical manner by which the state Governors have subverted and hijacked the Local Governments (LGs) structures in their respective states suggests the contrary. The 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) makes provisions for elected LG Councils, yet, the Governors having being in firm charge have rendered these provisions illusory. They toy with the autonomy and vitality of the LGs, interfering and removing elected LG officials at their fancies. This study assesses the role of the state Governors in the determination of representations at the LG level in Nigeria and its effects in providing credible leadership for rural development. Data were gathered through primary and secondary sources such as 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), books relevant to the present study, peer review journal articles, judicial precedents, internet materials and newspaper reports. The above data were subject to content analysis. The paper finds that the LG elections in Nigeria are not given premium position by many state governments which robs the nation of a structured leadership development avenue. It also finds that the Electoral Management Body in the states are not independent. The paper, therefore, proffers Constitutional reforms as the way out of the wood. This will not only stop the Governors from acting capriciously and as omnipotent emperors, it will also allow the LGs enhance their capacity for optimum utilization of local initiatives through democratic means.

There have been many studies on the Voortrekker Centenary of 1938 and the unforeseen consequences it had, including the subsequent surge of Afrikaner nationalism and political developments. As the wagons moved across South Africa, the processions infused Afrikaners with pride in their heroic past. Afrikaner nationalism, the ideology that focused on protecting Afrikaner culture, the striving to regain an independent republic and, importantly, affirmation that they were God’s chosen people, were rekindled. The event also generated a widespread sense of connection. It was not only Afrikaners who were swept up in the euphoria of the celebrations, but also many non-Afrikaners were emotionally affected by the event. This article narrows the focus down to George, a small town in the Western Cape Province, where Charles Sayers, the editor of the local newspaper, the George Knysna Herald, a firm supporter of the United Party and a fierce critic of the Reunited National Party, seems to have been swept up for a short period by the fever of the celebrations. A year later, in 1939, when war broke out in Europe, Sayers loyally approved of the United Party’s decision to support the war effort in Europe on the side of the Allies and became harshly critical of Hertzog and those Afrikaners nationalists who refused to join a war on Britain’s side. With the George Knysna Herald as the primary source, this article attempts to determine what led the editor to undergo such an about-turn in his political views in 1938 and to be temporarily supportive of the celebrations that embodied the spirit of Afrikaner nationalism.

Streszczenie:
The Drive-In meaningfully contributes to the complex picture of outdoor cinema that has been central to American culture and to a history of US cinema based on diverse viewing experiences rather than a select number of films. Drive-in cinemas flourished in 1950s America, in some summer weeks to the extent that there were more cinemagoers outdoors than indoors. Often associated with teenagers interested in the drive-in as a ‘passion pit’ or a venue for exploitation films, accounts of the 1950s American drive-in tend to emphasise their popularity with families with young children, downplaying the importance of a film programme apparently limited to old, low-budget or independent films and characterising drive-in operators as industry outsiders. They retain a hold on the popular imagination. The Drive-In identifies the mix of generations in the drive-in audience as well as accounts that articulate individual experiences, from the drive-in as a dating venue to a segregated space. Through detailed analysis of the film industry trade press, local newspapers and a range of other primary sources including archival records on cinemas and cinema circuits in Arkansas, California, New York State and Texas, this book examines how drive-ins were integrated into local communities and the film industry and reveals the importance and range of drive-in programmes that were often close to that of their indoor neighbours.

In a work that will force scholars to re-evaluate how they approach Sinophone studies, Wai-Siam Hee demonstrates that many of the major issues raised by contemporary Sinophone studies were already hotly debated in the popular culture surrounding Chinese-language films made in Singapore and Malaya during the Cold War. Despite the high political stakes, the feature films, propaganda films, newsreels, documentaries, newspaper articles, memoirs, and other published materials of the time dealt in sophisticated ways with issues some mistakenly believe are only modern concerns. In the process, the book offers an alternative history to the often taken-for-granted versions of film and national history that sanction anything relating to the Malayan Communist Party during the early period of independence in the region as anti-nationalist. Drawing exhaustively on material from Asian, European, and North American archives, the author unfolds the complexities produced by British colonialism and anti-communism, identity struggles of the Chinese Malayans, American anti-communism, and transnational Sinophone cultural interactions. Hee shows how Sinophone multilingualism and the role of the local, in addition to other theoretical problems, were both illustrated and practised in Cold War Sinophone cinema. Remapping the Sinophone: The Cultural Production of Chinese-Language Cinema in Singapore and Malaya before and during the Cold War deftly shows how contemporary Sinophone studies can only move forward by looking backwards.

This chapter describes how Americans embraced European philhellenism and how it first evolved as a movement in the United States. Lord Byron's philhellenism and his subsequent pledge to join the Greek army particularly energized interest in the Greek cause on both sides of the Atlantic. Although the American philhellenic movement initially drew some momentum from its European counterpart, it quickly became a unique one in its own right. More than any other revolution of the nineteenth century, the Greek War of Independence saw Americans in both the North and South quickly connecting it with their own revolution, and they regarded it as their duty to raise public awareness and support for the cause. Americans quickly mobilized an active cause when it became obvious that the U.S. government would neither officially recognize Greek independence nor would provide the Greek army with military aid. This mobilization of popular support for the Greek cause generated what many newspapers termed “the Greek Fire.”

Maurice Halbwachs demonstrated that memory is shaped by social forces. I argue that collective memory is mediated in symbolic representations. National collective memory is unstable and open to revision and is a site for dispute between alternative representations. Changes in media lead to changes in collective memory. The trauma within collective memory is passed down through generations. I argue that collective memory is not a process of remembering and forgetting, but remembering and unremembering. Unremembering is a process of concealment. Literature is significant in shaping collective memory, but so too are film, memoir, public media like newspapers and television, as well as works of historical scholarship. I end this chapter with a factual summary of the Indonesian War of Independence.

Streszczenie:
Abstract The Introduction orients the reader in the world of modernist discourse in European design, applied arts, and Wohnkultur, beginning with celebrated earlier explorations of Viennese modernism known as the Wiener Moderne taking place during the turn of the twentieth century. Taking into account the precursors of the Wiener Moderne, such as the Vienna Secession (founded 1897) and the Viennese Workshops (founded 1903), and key figures in architecture and design such as Otto Wagner, Adolf Loos, Josef Hoffmann, Koloman Moser, Oskar Strnad, the Introduction argues that Vienna’s interwar explorations of modernism are defined by several key debates about the definition of modernism in Viennese cultural history. Viennese applied arts should be understood as a diverse landscape of designers and architects working in a mélange of styles and approaches, not easily defined under a single movement or style. These discourses clashed in both aesthetic and theory with other modernist discourses circulating around Europe, notably the De Stijl movement, the Dessau Bauhaus, Russian Constructivism, and French Purism. On the international level, Vienna’s approach to modernism remained largely independent of neighboring European experiments in modern living and design, and illustrated a skepticism of avant-garde aesthetics that pervaded the showrooms of interior design and home furnishing firms, the pages of local magazines and newspapers, and the galleries of interior design exhibitions.
