Harnessing solar energy to produce hydrogen through semiconductor-mediated photocatalytic water splitting is a promising avenue to address the challenges of energy scarcity and environmental degradation. Ever since Fujishima and Honda’s groundbreaking work in photocatalytic water splitting, titanium dioxide (TiO2) has garnered significant interest as a semiconductor photocatalyst, prized for its non-toxicity, affordability, superior photocatalytic activity, and robust chemical stability. Nonetheless, the efficacy of solar energy conversion is hampered by TiO2’s wide bandgap and the swift recombination of photogenerated carriers. In pursuit of enhancing TiO2’s photocatalytic prowess, a panoply of modification techniques has been explored over recent years. This work provides an extensive review of the strategies employed to augment TiO2’s performance in photocatalytic hydrogen production, with a special emphasis on foreign dopant incorporation. Firstly, we delve into metal doping as a key tactic to boost TiO2’s capacity for efficient hydrogen generation via water splitting. We elaborate on the premise that metal doping introduces discrete energy states within TiO2’s bandgap, thereby elevating its visible light photocatalytic activity. Following that, we evaluate the role of metal nanoparticles in modifying TiO2, hailed as one of the most effective strategies. Metal nanoparticles, serving as both photosensitizers and co-catalysts, display a pronounced affinity for visible light absorption and enhance the segregation and conveyance of photogenerated charge carriers, leading to remarkable photocatalytic outcomes. Furthermore, we consolidate perspectives on the nonmetal doping of TiO2, which tailors the material to harness visible light more efficiently and bolsters the separation and transfer of photogenerated carriers. The incorporation of various anions is summarized for their potential to propel TiO2’s photocatalytic capabilities. This review aspires to compile contemporary insights on ion-doped TiO2, propelling the efficacy of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution and anticipating forthcoming advancements. Our work aims to furnish an informative scaffold for crafting advanced TiO2-based photocatalysts tailored for water-splitting applications.

Based on the physicochemical properties of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), and the need of having an anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effect at the same time in a material for wound healing applications, a multicomponent polymer system was synthesized. Zn-based MOFs having different amino acids acting as ligands (L-tryptophan (Trp), L-phenylalanine (Phe), and L-histidine (His)) in their coordination sphere were successfully prepared and validated by FTIR and XRD. Each MOF was incorporate d into a semi-interpenetrated polymeric network (semi-IPN) based on collagen (C)-guar gum (GG)-polyurethane (PU), given composite hydrogels as end products. The physicochemical properties of these novel composite hydrogels, their in vitro biocompatibility, and their use as cell carriers were studied. The maximum swelling capacity was shown by CGG-Zn(Trp) while the crosslinking index was higher for CGG-Zn(Phe) and CGG-Zn(His), indicating that the chemical structure of the amino acid of the Zn-based MOF tailors these physicochemical properties. All composite hydrogels were resistant to a hydrolysis degradation process (at pH=5 and 7.4) being not entirely degraded after 14 days and having residual masses above 57%. The incorporation of Zn-based MOFs increased the biocompatibility in terms of metabolic activity and proliferation of porcine fibroblast in contact with the composite hydrogels. The low release capacity of fibroblast encapsula ted inside hydrogels evaluated for 10 days indicated the non-efficient capacity of these matrixes as cell carriers, regardless of the structure of the Zn-based MOF. The strong adhesion of porcine fibroblast to the composite hydrogels is related to improving metabolic activity al lowing its proliferation, making these multicomponent polymeric systems useful as efficient materials in biomedical applications such as wound dressing and tissue engineering.

AbstractFollowing Calabresi and Melamed, legal theory has employed the property rule/liability rule distinction in order to hone our understanding of existing norms, as well as suggest new ones. This paper suggests an addition to the pantheon in the form of a protocol that we call an “Incorporation Rule”. It is a novel mechanism allowing private parties and courts to combine property rule and liability rule protection where both apply to the same entitlement. Incorporation Rules allow for separating the effects of intertwined property and liability rules, focusing on ex-ante voluntary determination of levels of protection usually adjudicated ex-post. Under the protocol, the entitlement is transferred to a special-purpose corporate vehicle, which then issues tailor-made securities to the owner of the entitlement and to the potential buyer or rivalrous user. In this manner, the entitlement is split along the contours of three basic corporate instruments – heterogeneous capital structure, separation of ownership and control, and an independent legal personality. By relying on these known-and-tested corporate mechanisms, risk and transaction costs are minimized, enforcement is improved, and heterogeneous preferences of individuals can be accommodated. The Incorporation Rule protocol thus allows for flexibility in protecting entitlements while facilitating efficient exchange.

This work aims to study the effect of incorporating proteins with different isoelectric points (pI) on the structure, composition and morphology of biomimetic calcium-phosphate (Ca-P) coatings. For that, bovine serum albumin (BSA) and lysozyme, having respectively acidic and basic pIs, were used as model proteins. It was observed that the incorporation of positively charged proteins, such as lysozyme, was able to significantly change the structure of the coatings, possibly due to the preferential interactions between the protein and negatively charged phosphate ions. These results indicated that proteins with different characteristics can be incorporated into biomimetic Ca-P coatings in order to obtain a hybrid coating and at the same tailoring their properties.

Multilayer thin film assembly by the layer-by-layer (LbL) technique offers an inexpensive and versatile route for the synthesis of functional nanomaterials. In the case of polymer-clay systems, however, the technique faces the challenges of low clay loading and lack of tunability of the film characteristics. This is addressed in the present work that achieves exponential growth in clay-containing polyelectrolyte films having high clay loading and tailored properties. Our approach involves the incorporation of a weak polyelectrolyte and a clay with relatively high charge density and small particle size. The system of investigation comprises poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) as the polycation and laponite clay and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) or poly(sodium-4-styrene sulfonate) (PSS) as polyanions that are used alternately to create multilayers. Successful high clay loading and exponential growth were achieved by two different approaches of polyanion incorporation in the multilayers. A progressive increase in the degree of ionization of PAA was shown to contribute to the exponential growth. Our findings also include novel pathways to manipulate thickness, surface topography, and clay content. The strategy presented here can lead to novel approaches to fabricate tailor-made nanomaterials for distinct applications.

This research work investigates the development of alginate-based films incorporating phenolic compounds extracted from Amaranthus cruentus grain using different solvents. Alginate, glycerol, and amaranth grain phenolic compounds at various concentrations were used to produce the films. An experimental Central Composite Rotatable Design (CCRD) was used to evaluate the effect of these variables on different film’s properties, i.e., water vapor permeability, hydrophobicity, moisture content, solubility, thermal, mechanical, and optical properties. This study demonstrated that high phenolic compound content and antioxidant capacity were obtained from amaranth grain using ethanol as the extraction solvent. Alginate films incorporating amaranth phenolic compounds were successfully manufactured, and this study can be used to tailor the formulation of alginate films containing amaranth phenolic compounds, depending on their final food application. For example, less flexible but more resistant and water-soluble films can be produced by increasing the alginate concentration, which was confirmed by a Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Partial Least Squares (PLS) analysis. This study showed that active alginate films with amaranth phenolic compounds can be tailored to be used as food packaging material with potential antioxidant activity.

Healthcare associated infections (HCAI) impose significant financial and environmental problems for modern healthcare settings, therefore it is important to develop novel strategies to combat HCAIs and the causative microorganisms. This study investigates the use of an encapsulated essential oil (EO) antimicrobial coating for textiles in the healthcare environment. The antimicrobial activity of several EOs were studied, individually and in blends, against five microorganisms associated with HCAI (Staphylococcus aureus, methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus, Candida albicans, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa). A 1:1 blend of cinnamon (CIN) and clove oils (CLO) containing 94.8 % (v/v) eugenol (by GC-MS) showed the highest antimicrobial efficacy and gave a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of less than 0.25% (v/v). Mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSN) were used to encapsulate volatile EOs. The MSNs displayed narrow size distribution, high surface area and pore size between 1.8-2.2 nm. MSNs, directly loaded with CIN:CLO blend (72 % by mass of MSN), achieved bactericidal values (25-50 mg/mL) against the test microorganisms. Dynamic killing profiles of the EO loaded MSNs against the test microorganisms were recorded. The highest kill rates were observed during the first 15 minutes of contact. Organically modified silica (ormosil) gels were synthesised to provide thin film coverage of synthetic fibres. Gamma-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (-MPS) was used to attach un-loaded MSNs to the ormosil coating. A layer-by-layer treatment method provided good coverage of synthetic fibres with MSNs, as evidenced by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) was used to monitor the layer-by-layer treatment sequence. Head space GC-MS sampling of EO loaded MSN treated textile coupons showed that EO was able to diffuse from the MSN mesopores after being bonded to the synthetic fibres. The EO loaded MSN textile coupons were microbiologically challenged using a method based on AATCC 100. The EO loaded MSN textile coupons displayed good antimicrobial activity over five washing cycles using a method based on (AATCC 61 and 135) thereby indicating a degree of controlled release.

AbstractThe incorporation of fairness-aware machine learning presents a challenge for creators of personalized systems, such as recommender systems found in e-commerce, social media, and elsewhere. These systems are designed and promulgated as providing services tailored to each individual user’s unique needs. However, fairness may require that other objectives, possibly in conflict with personalization, also be satisfied. The theoretical framework of post-userism, which broadens the focus of design in HCI settings beyond the individual end user, provides an avenue for this integration. However, in adopting this approach, developers will need to offer new, more complex narratives of what personalized systems do and whose needs they serve.

AbstractThe European Commission has made sustainable development a central element of its growth strategy for the next few years. From an all-encompassing perspective, the European Green Deal (EGD) represents the EU’s contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the “Smart Specialization Strategy” (S3), and the attempt of the EU at a position of global leadership in sustainable development. This paper states that an effective innovation-oriented policy, including a sustainable dimension, requires an adequate division of labour between the EC, national and regional/local governance levels, and the shift from S3 to S4 +, a smart specialization sustainable strategy. It also underlines how a territorial approach to policies is suitable for incorporating a five-helix innovation model and is well suited for implementing S4 +. Therefore, the Ecological Transition, illustrated in the EGD, requires a new governance design and management attitude. This contribution proposes a framework for implementing the new EGD strategy and the consequent implementation of the sustainability dimension. Numerous challenges focus on the sub-regional level highlighting the Community-Led Local Development (CLLD) as a tailored governance model that can include Sustainability and innovation in a complete democratic setting.

AbstractVision rehabilitation aims to improve daily functioning in patients with chronic disabling vision impairments – low vision – by providing vision assistive equipment and teaching patients effective use of the equipment; teaching patients adaptations to obviate dependence on vision; modifications of the patient’s environment to improve visibility and increase safety; and psychosocial counseling and education to help patients cope with the stress of impaired vision. The interventions that constitute vision rehabilitation are tailored to each patient’s functional goals and personal preferences. This chapter describes the theory, structure, and mechanics of an adaptive patient-reported outcome measure – the Activity Inventory (AI). The AI was developed to identify each patient’s unique set of functional goals within a hierarchical framework, to specify the cognitive and motor activities (i.e., tasks in different functional domains) the patient customarily performs to achieve his or her personal goals, and to elicit ordinal patient ratings of the importance and difficulty of each goal and the difficulty of relevant subsidiary tasks under goals that meet or exceed defined importance and difficulty criteria. The theoretical assumptions of a Rasch psychometric model that is employed to estimate measures of the patient’s overall visual ability from goal difficulty ratings and ability in each functional domain from task difficulty ratings before and after vision rehabilitation are presented and the results for a large group of low vision patients are reviewed. This chapter then explores the issue of how individual patient preferences must be factored into the outcome measures to determine the utility of functional improvements from vision rehabilitation. A theoretical framework for incorporating the utility of individual vision rehabilitation outcomes is offered and its application to functional outcome data is demonstrated.

<p>In the framework of H2020, the European Commission recently funded the project ReSHEALience (www.uhdc.eu). The main idea behind the project is that the long-term behaviour of structures under extremely aggressive exposure conditions can highly benefit from the use of high performance materials, in the framework of durability-based design approaches. The project consortium, coordinated by Politecnico di Milano, features 14 partners from 8 different countries, including 6 academic/research institutions and 8 industrial partners, covering the whole value chain from producers of concrete constituents to construction companies to stake-holders and end-users. The main goals of the project are the development (a) of an Ultra High Durability Concrete (UHDC) and (b) a Durability Assessment-based Design (DAD) methodology to improve structure durability and predict long-term performance under Extremely Aggressive Exposures (EAE). The project will tailor the composition of UHDC, by upgrading the UHPC/UHPFRC concept through the incorporation of tailored nanoscale constituents.</p>

Nickel phosphorus (Ni-P) coatings possess tailored mechanical and anticorrosion properties and have found applications in industries like automotive, oil and gas, electronics, and aerospace. Their properties can further be enhanced by incorporating nanoparticles into their (Ni-P) matrix. In the present study, Ni-P-Ti nanocomposite coatings have been developed on high strength low alloy steel (HSLA) through electroless deposition technique. For this purpose, various concentrations of titanium (Ti) nanoparticles are used in the deposition bath containing 0.0g/L, 0.25g/L, 0.5g/L, 0.75g/L, and 1.0g/L nanoparticles. XDR, SEM, microhardness, and nanoindentation have been carried out to elucidate the role of Ti nanoparticle concertation on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the Ni-P-Ti composite coatings. XRD and EDX results confirm the incorporation of nanoparticles into the Ni-P matrix during deposition processing. SEM and AFM results exhibit the formation of a dense, uniform coating without any observable defects. An increase in the mechanical properties of the Ni-P matrix was observed by the addition of Ti nanoparticles. Superior mechanical properties were shown by the samples containing 0.5g/L Ti nanoparticle concentration. Improvement in the structural, as well as mechanical properties of Ni- P matrix by the addition of Ti, confirms the suitability of Ni-P-Ti composite coatings for various engineering applications.

Model cellular membranes respond to chemical and electrical stimuli, regulating transport and exchange between two neighboring aqueous droplets. This regulated exchange may prove useful for controlling aqueous micro-environments for studying stimuli-responsive encapsulated bacteria. This concept is explored in this work, focusing on characterizing the bacterial response within a synthetic cellular environment. In the droplet interface bilayer (DIB) approach, aqueous micro-droplets deposited in an oil reservoir with dissolved lipids are coated with lipid monolayers and arranged into artificial cellular networks. This approach has been explored for potential use as a biologically-inspired smart material, but new material transduction pathways are necessary. This may be accomplished by combining this bottom-up approach to synthetic biology with living organisms such as stimuli-responsive bacteria. Bacteria encapsulation within the microfluidic droplets begins with a strain of Escherichia coli (E. coli), XL1-Blue. These flagellated bacteria naturally respond and move towards chemoattractants such as casamino acids, and their motion may be tracked through differential interference contrast (DIC) and fluorescent microscopy. Chemotaxis of XL1-Blue was assessed through low-flow perfusion of the chemoattractant (casamino acids) into a buffer solution containing the bacteria through a tailored capillary tube. Next, the response of bacteria within asymmetric DIB networks separating the bacteria and the chemoattractant were studied.

We present a concept and a theoretical feasibility study of a sub g threshold inertial micro sensor, which incorporates a curved bistable beam as a suspension element. For certain range of geometric parameters such a beam can exhibit lathing, namely remain in its switched configuration at zero actuating force. Since the device can be released from its latched state by an external acceleration force, it can therefore serve as a threshold inertial switch. While the snap-through force, associated with the switching from the initial to the buckled state, cannot be reduced without decreasing the frequency of the device, the release value of the acceleration can be tailored to be arbitrarily low. This allows design of a devices with sufficiently high stiffness in the initial and latched configurations, but with a very low release threshold. Our model show that for appropriately chosen parameters, it is possible to design a sub g threshold acceleration micro switch of realistic dimensions.

Canada’s extensive pipeline grid can be traced back to the 1950s when major crude oil and natural gas finds in western Canada led to the construction of large pipeline systems [1]. Some of the currently operating pipelines in Canada have been operating for over 60 years. With the objective of ensuring that pipelines are suitable for continued reliable, safe and environmentally responsible service, the National Energy Board (NEB) issued the Onshore Pipeline Regulations (OPR) in 1999 (OPR-99) mandating pipeline companies to develop and implement Integrity Management Programs (IMPs). The OPR-99 allows pipeline companies to tailor the content of the IMPs to particular circumstances. From a life cycle perspective, the majority of pipeline IMPs involve inspection and testing, data management and interpretation, risk assessment, integrity or engineering assessment and pipeline repairs. Despite the evident benefits of implementing IMPs, conducting pipeline repairs can also trigger environmental concerns and permitting requirements. Developing effective Environmental Protection Plans (EPPs) and obtaining federal and provincial environmental permitting in sensitive areas can be time consuming and costly. If these factors and costs are not incorporated to the planning process they can create subsequent delays and financial burdens. Additionally, implementing environmental management practices throughout the life cycle of IMPs will aid pipeline companies in managing environmental issues systematically and effectively while enhancing environmental stewardship and corporate social responsibility. Including environmental setting considerations, identifying regulatory requirements and conducting stakeholder engagement during the earliest stages and throughout the IMP is essential to ensure the sustainability of the Program. This paper describes an integrated management system which incorporates environmental considerations throughout the overall IMP and a strategic approach to information management.

Contact, adhesion and stick-slip are major detrimental factors in the performance of micro electromechanical systems (MEMS). One method to reduce adhesion may be the incorporation of tailored rough surfaces, as suggested by the classical experiments of Fuller and Tabor some 3 decades ago. However, before embarking on a costly experimental approach, it is important to quantitatively assess the possible reduction in adhesion through such tailored surfaces. Past analysis has generally been confined to the adhesion of flat surfaces with a random roughness profile, or to Hertzian contact (without adhesion) of a cylindrical surface with a sinusoidal surface profile. In this work, we extend the analysis to the adhesion of cylindrical surfaces with any arbitrary roughness profile. The application may, for example, be in the contact of MEMS gears. The load-displacement and contact area profiles provide both qualitative and quantitative insight on how rough curved surfaces interact under adhesion conditions.

There has been a rising awareness in recent years of the gender inequalities within STEM-related programmes and the need to overcome them and so bridge the gender gap in these academic disciplines. Different initiatives have arisen, among which there are gender equality policies, regulations and programmes. In line with this, the Catalan University Quality Assurance Agency (AQU) promoted a regulation for the incorporation of the gender perspective in all the bachelor’s and master’s degrees in tertiary education in Catalonia by 2021. To comply with this regulation and also to promote a culture of equity and equality of opportunities for women, the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) fostered different projects within its community. One of these projects has been developed by the Gender Equality Commission at Barcelona School of Nautical Studies and consists in the development of a web platform with resources for lecturers to incorporate this new transversal competence of gender perspective in the nautical, marine and naval engineering study plans. The main objective of this teaching innovation project is to aid teachers with the incorporation of this competence not only by providing online tools and resources but also gender-focused teacher training to allow them to design tailor-made activities and strategies. Some tests were also administered to assess the effectiveness of the implementation of these newly-designed gender equality teaching practices and some sample study plans and activities were developed to serve as a model and example of good practices for the incorporation of gender mainstreaming in the disciplines of nautical, marine and naval engineering.

Abstract As the United States transitions to performance-based building and fire regulations, it will become increasingly important to incorporate risk concepts into the regulations. However, there is a general lack of acceptance of the concepts of risk and risk analysis by the building and fire communities. There are many reasons for this, including a lack of consensus on risk characterization and quantification, inadequate expressions of acceptable risk limits, a lack of risk analysis tools and methods tailored to building and fire safety, and a lack of guidance for addressing uncertainty. As a means to begin addressing these issues, a research project is underway with the aim of outlining a process for identifying, characterizing, and incorporating risk concepts and analysis methods into building and fire regulation development. This paper presents outcomes of the research project that are being evaluated and incorporated into the development of the International Code Council’s Performance Building Code.

Statistical distributions of urban noise levels are influenced by many complex phenomena, including spatial and temporal variations in the source level, multisource mixtures, propagation losses, and random fading from multipath reflections. This article provides a broad perspective on the varying impacts of these phenomena. Distributions incorporating random fading and averaging (e.g., gamma and noncentral Erlang) tend to be negatively skewed on logarithmic (decibel) axes but can be positively skewed if the fading process is strongly modulated by source power variations (e.g., compound gamma). In contrast, distributions incorporating randomly positioned sources and explicit geometric spreading [e.g., exponentially modified Gaussian (EMG)] tend to be positively skewed with exponential tails on logarithmic axes. To evaluate the suitability of the various distributions, one-third octave band sound-level data were measured at 37 locations in the North End of Boston, MA. Based on the Kullback-Leibler divergence as calculated across all of the locations and frequencies, the EMG provides the most consistently good agreement with the data, which were generally positively skewed. The compound gamma also fits the data well and even outperforms the EMG for the small minority of cases exhibiting negative skew. The lognormal provides a suitable fit in cases in which particular non-traffic noise sources dominate.

Objectives: The overall objective as defined in the approved proposal was the development of a whole-cell sensor panel for the detection of endocrine disruption activities of agriculturally relevant chemicals. To achieve this goal several specific objectives were outlined: (a) The development of new genetically engineered wholecell sensor strains; (b) the combination of multiple strains into a single sensor panel to effect multiple response modes; (c) development of a computerized algorithm to analyze the panel responses; (d) laboratory testing and calibration; (e) field testing. In the course of the project, mostly due to the change in the US partner, three modifications were introduced to the original objectives: (a) the scope of the project was expanded to include pharmaceuticals (with a focus on antibiotics) in addition to endocrine disrupting chemicals, (b) the computerized algorithm was not fully developed and (c) the field test was not carried out. Background: Chemical agents, such as pesticides applied at inappropriate levels, may compromise water quality or contaminate soils and hence threaten human populations. In recent years, two classes of compounds have been increasingly implicated as emerging risks in agriculturally-related pollution: endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) and pharmaceuticals. The latter group may reach the environment by the use of wastewater effluents, whereas many pesticides have been implicated as EDCs. Both groups pose a threat in proportion to their bioavailability, since that which is biounavailable or can be rendered so is a priori not a threat; bioavailability, in turn, is mediated by complex matrices such as soils. Genetically engineered biosensor bacteria hold great promise for sensing bioavailability because the sensor is a live soil- and water-compatible organism with biological response dynamics, and because its response can be genetically “tailored” to report on general toxicity, on bioavailability, and on the presence of specific classes of toxicants. In the present project we have developed a bacterial-based sensor panel incorporating multiple strains of genetically engineered biosensors for the purpose of detecting different types of biological effects. Implications: The sensor panel developed in the course of the project was shown to be applicable for the detection of a broad range of antibiotics and EDCs. Following a suitable development phase, the panel will be ready for testing in an agricultural environment, as an innovative tool for assessing the environmental impacts of EDCs and pharmaceuticals. Furthermore, while the current study relates directly to issues of water quality and soil health, its implications are much broader, with potential uses is risk-based assessment related to the clinical, pharmaceutical, and chemical industries as well as to homeland security.
