Streszczenie:
It is no understatement to say that September 11, 2001, is the most important date in the history of American Islam. From this day forth, Muslims would become a target for social wrath and become vilified like at no other time in American history. In one fell swoop, Muslims became the most feared and hated religious group in the country. While analysis of the impacts on Muslims tends to focus on Muslims outside of prison, it is critical to recognize that Muslims in prison were no exception to the post- 9/11 hostilities directed at Muslims. They experienced similarly heightened levels of Islamophobia and discrimination. The main goal of this essay is to consider the War on Terror in the prison context in the years following the events of 9/11. The work aims to assess how fear and anger seeped into prisons and became the means of repressing Muslims and casting them as a unique threat to national and institutional security. Although time has proved these attitudes unjustified and alarmist, they have taken a toll on those in prison and made life more difficult for individuals already existing in some of the harshest conditions in the country.

Context: During thoroughbred races, jockeys are placed in potentially injurious situations, often with inadequate safety equipment. Jockeys frequently sustain head injuries; therefore, it is important that they wear appropriately certified helmets. Objective: The goals of this study are (1) to perform impact attenuation testing according to ASTM F1163-15 on a sample of equestrian helmets commonly used by jockeys in the United States and (2) to quantify headform acceleration and residual crush after repeat impacts at the same location. Participants and Design: Seven helmet models underwent impact attenuation testing according to ASTM F1163-15. A second sample of each helmet model underwent repeat impacts at the crown location for a total of 4 impacts. Setting: Laboratory. Intervention: Each helmet was impacted against a flat and equestrian hazard anvil. Main Outcome Measures: Headform acceleration was recorded during all impact and computed tomography scans were performed preimpact and after impacts 1 and 4 on the crown to quantify liner thickness. Results: Four helmets had 1 impact that exceeded the limit of 300g. During the repeated crown impacts, acceleration remained below 300g for the first and second impacts for all helmets, while only one helmet remained below 300g for all impacts. Foam liner thickness was reduced between 5% and 39% after the first crown impact and between 33% and 70% after the fourth crown impact. Conclusions: All riders should wear a certified helmet and replace it after sustaining a head impact. Following an impact, expanded polystyrene liners compress, and their ability to attenuate head acceleration during subsequent impacts to the same location is reduced. Replacing an impacted helmet may reduce a rider’s head injury risk.

This paper provides a general overview of the technological, social, environmental, economical, and policy considerations related to biofuels. While the biofuel production and consumption exhibited significant increase over the first decade of the new millennium, this and further increases in biofuel production are driven primarily by government policies. Currently available first generation biofuels are not economically viable in the absence of fiscal incentives or high oil prices (with a few exceptional cases, especially in the case of the most developed Brazilian sugarcane production of ethanol). Also the environmental impacts of biofuels as an alternative to fossil fuels are quite ambiguous. The literature review of the most recent economic models dealing with biofuels and their economic impacts provides a distinction between structural and reduced form models. The discussion of structural models centres primarily on computable general equilibrium (CGE) models. The review of reduced models is structured toward the time series analysis approach to the dependencies between prices of biofuels, prices of agricultural commodities used for the biofuel production and prices of the fossil fuels.

Streszczenie:
AbstractThis article critically examines the demand that academic research should be assessed by its impact, and universities' compliance with that demand. Although the discussion centres mainly on the UK, it will have relevance to any academic context where government and/or business seek to control academics. The article begins by briefly examining the meaning of impact. It next considers the role of applied linguistics in shaping language-teaching revolutions, and suggests it was commercial and political interests which had the greatest impact. Moving on to the current wider scope of applied linguistics, it suggests that while the discipline has had positive influence in some areas, it has failed to influence government policy, but that this failure is not a measure of its worth. In the second part of the article, the focus changes to a consideration of impacts on applied linguistics by public relations (PR) models of language, and government interference in academic affairs. It notes the growth and power of PR units within British universities, and wonders why applied linguistics fails to challenge the vapid and often incorrect assertions made by these communication ‘experts’ about language use. It links this ‘PR turn’ in universities, and the vague language which surrounds it, to the tightening stranglehold of current and recent UK governments on university activity, comparing this briefly to the more open recruitment of applied linguistics to serve national security interests in the USA. The overall conclusions of the article are that impact is not necessarily a measure of academic worth, and that informed critique of establishment values should remain one of the main roles of academics. While these conclusions are relevant to all academic disciplines they are of particular poignancy for applied linguistics, given the role of language in establishing control and undermining academic freedoms.

This study is qualitative research that aims to determine the effect of the game Genshin Impact on the English skills of the players. The ability referred to in this study is limited to the ability to write and read. Correspondents in this study were 20 players of the Genshin Impact game between the ages of 16 – 36 years consisting of 19 male players and 1 female player. The method of data collection was done by using a closed interview method. Then, the information collected will then be analyzed in depth and detail using a grounded theory approach to see the relationship between playing Genshin Impact and the players' English (reading and writing) abilities. The results of this study are true that Genshin Impact has an influence on the English skills of the players although it is not significant

Streszczenie:
Host communities often very strongly oppose municipal waste disposal facilities despite the absence of very serious physical impacts. In order to effectively manage facility impacts and siting process to reduce host community opposition, waste management engineers and planners must understand the linkage between physical impacts and beliefs and the resulting attitudes in the host community. Physical impacts, community beliefs, and attitudes were assessed at two typical waste facilities, a landfill and an incinerator for municipal solid waste. Typical landfill impacts consist of water and air quality effects, odors, noise, and visual impacts; incinerators generate air quality impacts, visual and slight noise effects. While residents' general beliefs about facility impacts focus on obvious physical impacts (noise, odor, air emissions), residents' opinions of specific waste facilities comprise a broader set of physical and nonphysical impacts, including property value losses, community image impact, and loss of community control. These underlying, nonphysical impact beliefs are associated with exposure to obvious nuisance impacts and correlate strongly with residents' attitudes about the facility. Therefore, impact management efforts will be most effective if they, first, correctly identify underlying concerns and, then, manage the physical impacts that trigger them. Key words: waste disposal facilities, physical impacts, community beliefs, attitude, impact management, community acceptance.

Streszczenie:
This report provides measurement of the 2008 economic impacts of the film and video production and distribution industry on the Charlotte regional economy. Officially known as the Charlotte USA Region, this 16 county area is one of Americas fastest-growing metropolitan regions and supports a well established and expanding film and video production and distribution industry. Four different types of economic impacts generated by the film and video production and distribution industry were estimated based on the 2008 information. These impacts include: (1) output impacts; (2) employment impacts; (3) employee and freelancers compensation impacts; and (4) value added impacts. The results are disaggregated to identify the direct economic impact of the film and video production and distribution industry, the indirect (supply chain) impact of the industry, and the induced (re-spending) impact of the industry. The total impact of the industry is then the sum of direct, indirect, and induced impacts.

Streszczenie:
AbstractDirectly comparable data on the environmental and socio-economic impacts of alien species informs the effective prioritisation of their management. We used two frameworks, the Environmental Impact Classification for Alien Taxa (EICAT) and Socio-Economic Impact Classification for Alien Taxa (SEICAT), to create a unified dataset on the severity and type of impacts caused by alien leporids (rabbits and hares). Literature was reviewed to collate impact data, which was categorised following EICAT and SEICAT guidelines. We aimed to use these data to identify: (1) alien leporid species with severe impacts, (2) their impact mechanisms, (3) the native species and local communities vulnerable to impacts and (4) knowledge gaps. Native species from a range of taxonomic groups were affected by environmental impacts which tended to be more damaging than socio-economic impacts. Indirect environmental impacts were particularly damaging and underreported. No impact data were found for several alien leporid species.
