This thesis establishes the basic images of the gazelle in ancient Egyptian art and their meaning. A chronological overview of the categories of material featuring gazelle images is presented as a background to an interpretation. An introduction and review of the characteristics of the gazelle in the wild are presented in Chapters 1-2. The images of gazelle in the Predynastic material are reviewed in Chapter 3, identifying the desert hunt as the main setting for gazelle imagery. Chapter 4 reviews the images of the gazelle in the desert hunt scenes from tombs and temples. The majority of the motifs characteristic for the gazelle are found in this context. Chapter 5 gives a typological analysis of the images of the gazelle from offering processions scenes. In this material the image of the nursing gazelle is given particular importance. Similar images are also found on objects, where symbolic connotations can be discerned (Chapter 6). References to healing and regeneration are found, particularly in relationship to the context of the objects. The gazelle is found in a divine context in a limited material (Chapter 7). A discussion of these sources sees a focus on the gazelle as representative for the desert mountains as the setting for death and rebirth. This relates to the gazelle as a feminine image with a connection to the models of female divinity (Chapter 8).

Over the course of the 2007/2008 school year, I visited three classrooms to investigate the effectiveness of Augusto Boal’s drama method, Image Theatre, with elementary-aged students. In Image Theatre, the practitioners and students use their bodies to create frozen images, which in turn become the focus of collaborative meaning- making. I applied the reflective practitioner methodology in my work as it allowed me to adapt to the rapidly altering situations that arise in elementary classrooms. Through reflecting on my interactions with students, I refined a set of teaching techniques that worked best to integrate Image Theatre into the classroom and ultimately into the curriculum. My research provides a qualitative analysis of the power of Image Theatre to foster student dialogue, develop empathic learning, and introduce conflict awareness techniques. My thesis highlights some specific exercises and theoretical frameworks that guided my work and produced the most effective results. The effects of applying Image Theatre to elementary-aged classrooms has not been extensively studied in the past and my research attempts to address this academic gap. It is my hope that future researchers will adapt my activities and further demonstrate the capacities of this theatre technique. Ultimately, I hope that Image Theatre methods can find a place in standard curricula.

In the decades between 1480 and 1520 the production of images of Saint Anne with the Virgin and Child increased in Germany and the Netherlands in an unprecedented manner. This increase followed on the extensive promotion of the saint's cult by Netherlandish and Rheinland German humanists and reforming clerics that began in the 1480s, manifesting itself in the founding of confraternities dedicated to her and in the writing of lives and other texts. These texts, which were republished elsewhere in Germany, were of crucial importance in heightening Anne's popularity for they attributed to her a power unprecedented in saints' lives, the power to help souls achieve salvation. This power which Anne enjoyed thanks to her fleshly relationship with the Redeemer and his mother, had special appeal for German Christians, who in the fifteenth century were showing a heightened concern over individual salvation. This attempt to encourage membership in St. Anne confraternities was part of a larger clerical program to control and shape lay piety in the late medieval North, in part in response to anxieties over lay, especially lay women's, religious activities, in part in response to financial pressures. Not only did the texts ascribe salvific power to Anne. The images, both the Anna Selbdritt which depicts Anne with Mary and the Child Jesus, and the Holy Kinship which shows her with her extended family, also link Saint Anne with salvation, first by compositions which emphasize her role as the source of the flesh of Mary and Jesus, and second by the directions of the gazes. The hooded gaze of the fifteenth-century madonna, which is directed either downwards at her son or into the distance towards his coming crucifixion, and which aligns her with the role of co-redemptrix (merited by her fore-known humility) that some fifteenth-century theologians ascribed to her, is repeated in the figure of Anne. Thus Anne, as well as Mary, is compositionally linked with the redemptive sacrifice. This type of composition is found where texts ascribe salvific power to Anne, in Germany and Flanders, but it is not found where this motif is absent, for example in England and Italy.

This essay is based on a critical review of dominant form of tourism industry that causes a system of meaning, making as consequences of reproducing of ‘image’ in media. Images of promised destinations bombard us everywhere, on billboards, small advertisement bar on social networks websites, on magazine and even in movies and TV series in designated smart way. These images define what we should experience when we are in such destinations and at the same time affirm any other forms of experience which is not recognized in these matrixes of images are not welcome. This means for example the meaning of safety and comfort in a travel is only achieved by the way that  has been already constructed in media through series of campaigns of a special tourism agency. One can say this mechanism forces us to accept that there is no other ways of having comfortable travel without going by airplanes and tourist packages without accommodating in hotels, without going to designated touristic areas in destination and so on and so forth. Here I draw on other alternative ways of doing travel like Slow tourism as a way of breaking such image making system in media as well as a way of experiencing what seems to be un-experience-able. For this I conducted a series of interviews with an experienced slow traveler who cycled several times between various countries. This essay is a qualitative/analytical text based on experiences of one slow traveler and critical reviews of  literature provided in this area.

Computational creativity is a new and developing field of artificial intelligence concerned with computational systems that either autonomously produce original and functional products, or that augment the ability of humans to do so. As the role of computers in our daily lives is continuing to expand, the need for such systems is becoming increasingly important. We introduce and document the development of a new “creative” system, called DARCI (Digital ARtist Communicating Intention), that is designed to autonomously create novel artistic images that convey linguistic concepts to the viewer. Within the scope of this work, the system becomes capable of creating non-photorealistic renderings of existing image compositions so that they convey the semantics of given adjectives. Ultimately, we show that DARCI is capable of producing surprising artifacts that are competitive, in some ways, with those produced by human artists. As with the development of any “creative” system, we are faced with the challenges of incorporating the philosophies of creativity into the design of the system, assessing the system's creativity, overcoming technical shortcomings of extant modern algorithms, and justifying the system within its creative domain (in this case, visual art). In meeting these challenges with DARCI, we demonstrate three broad contributions of the system: 1) the contribution to the field of computational creativity in the form of an original system, new approaches to achieving autonomy in creative systems, and new practical assessment methods; 2) the contribution to the field of computer vision in the form of new image features for affective image annotation and a new dataset; and 3) the contribution to the domain of visual art in the form of mutually beneficial collaborations and participation in several art galleries and exhibits.

The purpose of this thesis is to assess theories of emotion, meaning, and expression in music from the perspective of the performer. While a significant body of research is devoted to theories about such matters—to which I will refer collectively as “theories of communicative content”—there is a general lack of attention paid to how such theories apply in actual music performance. In other words, these theories tend to avoid explicating not only how music conveys such content in acts of performance, but also how performers, through such acts, imbue music with communicative content. I seek to address this oversight because the process of applying communicative content in performance, indeed, the very process of performing itself, may offer insight into the mechanisms involved for making music meaningful and expressive. To that end, I will investigate evidence from actual musical practice and from actual music practitioners. The thesis will consider current research on expression, meaning, and emotion in music, propose a new model that derives from performance itself, and assess old and new models alike through case-study interviews with professional-level performers. By bringing the performer’s voice into the discussion, this thesis aims to formulate a model that not only gives an accurate account of how music becomes meaningful in performance, but also provides musicians with clearly defined methods for how to make music in ways that are emotionally charged and meaningfully expressive.

Problem: This dissertation investigates the first century Greco-Roman cultural backgrounds and the literary context of the motif of the image of the beast in Rev 13:14, 15, in order to answer the problem of the author’s intended meaning of the image of the beast to his first century Greco-Roman readers. Method: There are six steps necessary to accomplish the task of this dissertation. These steps are taken in the form of the exegetical studies which are done in six chapters, respectively. Following the introductory chapter, the second chapter is a brief history of the historical interpretations of the image of the beast in Rev 13:14, 15, starting with the interpretations from scholars of the first three centuries and continuing on to the present. This historical survey in Chapter 2 demonstrates that an in depth exegetical study of the image of the beast is much needed. Chapters 3-6 were an attempt to make up for this deficiency by providing an exegetical study of the image of the beast motif in its original cultural and literary context of the book of Revelation. Chapter 3 is a study of the image-of-the-beast motif within its immediate context of Revelation 13. Chapters 4-6 provide a study of the image-of-the-beast motif in the latter half of Revelation, i.e., Revelation 14-20, with Chapters 4-5 studying the image-of-the-beast motif in the chapters (Revelation 14-16, 19, and 20) in which this term occurs, and Chapter 6 studying this motif in the chapters (Revelation 17, 18) in which this term is absent. Conclusion: As I have come to see it, the narrative of Rev 13:14, 15 depicts the attempt of an unholy trinity to counteract God’s goal for the plan of salvation, i.e., the restoration of Imago Dei in human beings in the last days by creating the image of the beast on Earth. The image of the beast is an end time entity, comprised of a community of people who reflect the character of the dragon, and has the three-fold religious-economic-political power to impose false worship on Earth. The image of the beast is best identified with the end time Babylon the Great of chapters 17-18.

My research uses my painting practice as an experimental and investigative tool to test the capacity of practical aesthetics to generate similar or analogous experiences to the non-dualist reception aesthetics of certain key examples of post-Tridentine (1563) Catholic Counter-Reformation devotional imagery, particularly, The Ecstasy of St. Theresa (1647-1652) by Gian Lorenzo Bernini and the Incarnation (1596-1600) by El Greco. I apply an interpretative method to the development of Christian imagery within painting in the post-Reformation period and its relationship to the economic system of modern capitalism and the Enlightenment aesthetic of the sublime. My research aims to see what, if any, meanings and experiences, which, I believe, were present in the affective aesthetics of certain Counter-Reformation imagery can, through the contemporary aesthetics of my painting practice, be reconstructed or re-generated again as similar experience to those original pre-Enlightenment non-dualist meanings and experiences. The experience I aim to generate in my paintings is an affective and experiential narrative of presence, - Eliot's 'unity of thought, feeling and action', which I argue is found in the meaning and experience of those key Christian devotional images.

Typography' as a defining term has become interchangcable with 'graphic design'. and while font choice and application is seen as of paramount importance. image choice, virtually half , . of the communication design equation, is neglected in the theory and in pratice is left to the instinct of the designer. In this thesis I try to find approaches for graphic designers to understand image to the degree that they understand type. These approaches are tested through assignments for graphic design students and the results recorded and analysed. I seek to address the paradox that we are able to communicate more accurately through less accurately rendered images. I will explain how the human visual system. evolved over time by looking only upon the natural world in all its reality. can look upon a stick-figure and make an emotional and intellectual connection. I examine the design implications of this strange faculty of the visual system. Gombrich. Arnheim and others have explored realism in, and applied psychology to, art in order to become better art historians. I explore the implications in the more pragmatic. economically imperative field of design of moving away from realism in the visual aspects of communication.

My thesis grows out of a reflection on Cuban literature, race, and national identity within the broader framework of the canon and its marginal literature. It explores the dynamics of the Cuban canon and specific visions of race and nation, and studies one play, two novels, a book of poems and a radio script from four different moments in Cuban history. Fernández Vilarós´s play Los negros catedráticos (1868) sets for the first time the topic of race at the center of the national debate, immediately before the first and longest Cuban independence war. The play contrasts with Cecilia Valdés (1882), arguably the most canonical Cuban novel, with its subversive remake, Sofía (1891) and analyzes how the former seeks to conceal the nation’s racially-mixed character and present the mulata condition as a mere border-line. Sofía, however, erases this line and expands the mulata condition to everyone. Following this reading, it seeks to identify a set of markers that configures a mulato discourse in Regino Boti´s Arabescos mentales (1913). It proposes that the characteristic tendency toward elitism in Latin American Modernismo is actually a racial device to accomplish racial equality. And so language (and poetry) emerges in Boti as the most efficient vehicle to resolve racial deficiency. Finally, the thesis studies the script of the most successful Latino American soap opera ever, El derecho de nacer (1948), by Félix B. Caignet. Here Caignet converges the Villaverde´s idea of race as an objective value with Boti’s White idealization. He also proposes symbolic or cultural whitening as the only vehicle of social improvement. In conclusion, the common denominator of all four works is the representation of mulatez as an absolute and objective fact, as opposed to the marginal Sofía, which presents it as relative and subjective. Therefore, despite the traditional national discourse of Cuba as a racially-mixed country, the canon has banned those works that actually support this postulate.

This thesis examines the characteristics of moving image documents such as they pertain to the selection of films for archival preservation. It is advanced that both the physical nature of the film record and the nature of the evidence it presents are prime considerations in the development of archival selection criteria. Furthermore it is argued that the structure and content of film are interrelated factors which impact significantly upon the determination of archival value, and the suitability of the film record for permanent preservation. Finally, a major factor affecting selection involves accounting for the impact of film as a reflector and purveyor of popular culture. Given the powerful influence of film in moulding popular ideas, attitudes, and value systems, archival selection criteria must take into account film of all types if there is to be any future prospect of assessing the impact of film on society in a given period. The sources used for this study include the writings of historians and archivists concerning film as historical evidence and the archival selection thereof, as well as traditional film literature. The study proceeds from a consideration of the technical and structural aspects of film to a content-oriented discussion involving the reflective and influential nature of the moving image document. Archival selection is considered in terms of its necessity and justifiability with regard to the nature of the film record, and alternative modes of selection are investigated.

Vi vill ta reda på om svenskarna, fotbollsspelaren Zlatan Ibrahimovic samt Robin Carlsson, även känd som popartisten Robyn, genom respektive celebrity endorsement-aktion gällande kampanjen “Made By Sweden” med Volvo, övertar värden från företaget. För att applicera våra resultat på existerande teoretiska ramverk och därigenom kunna besvara våra frågeställningar har vi valt att förhålla oss till tidigare forskning om celebrity endorsement, teorier om hur budskap överförs exempelvis Meaning transfer model, samt marknadsteorier om varumärkesidentitet. Genom tre fokusgruppsintervjuer fick vi av respondenterna fram en image av de två utvalda kändisarna som låg till grund för vår analys. Genom att jämföra intervjupersonernas image med företagets profil kunde vi avgöra huruvida värden hade överförts från företaget till kändisen. Vår studie kom fram till att värden inte överförs från företag till kändis. Värdeord inkodade av företaget fanns inte representerade i den image som våra svarspersoner redovisade gällande de två olika kändisarna. Studien visar dock på att en kändis kan få helt nya värden genom en celebrity endorsement- kampanj.
This study regards Celebrity Endorsements, meaning collaborations where celebrities vouch for a product or a company in order to exchange values and hopefully increase sales. Previous research within this field is focused on what a celebrity can provide for the company. This essay examines the phenomena from the other direction, meaning what the company can provide to the celebrity. We want to find out if the swedes, football player Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Robin Carlsson, also known as the pop artist Robyn, through separate celebrity endorsement actions regarding the campaign “Made by Sweden” by Volvo, assumes values from the company. In order to apply our results on existing theoretical frameworks and thereby enabling ourselves to answer our questions, we have chosen to relate to previous research regarding celebrity endorsements, theories regarding how messages are transmitted, for instance the Meaning transfer model, as well as marketing theories regarding brand identity. Through three focus group interviews, we received an image of the two celebrities from the respondents, making the foundation for our analysis. Through comparing the image created by the respondents with the profile of the company, we could determine whether values had been transmitted from the company to the celebrity. Our study concluded that values are not transmitted from company to celebrity. Values encoded by the company were not represented in the image pictured by our respondents regarding the celebrities. The study does however show that a celebrity may gain new values through a celebrity endorsement action.

Sudarytas ir teoriškai bei empiriškai pagrįstas būsimų muzikos mokytojų meninės individualybės raiškos modelis, apimantis refleksyvumo (išreiškiamo per muzikos interpretavimo autentiškumą, savo gebėjimų vertinimą ir savo orumo jautimą), kūrybiškumo (per muzikos interpretavimo originalumą, vertinimų savitumą ir išgyvenimų intensyvumą), meniškumo (per muzikos interpretavimo harmoningumą, vertinimų gilumą ir išgyvenimų estetiškumą) ir atsakingumo (per prisiėmimą atsakomybės už muzikos kūrinių interpretavimą, vertinimų dorovingumą ir pareigos jautimą) komponentus. Peculiarities of the expression of artistic individuality of future teachers are analysed in the dissertation. Problem of the investigation has been formulated: in what way and what impact the musical activity can exert on artistic individuality of future music teachers and to what extent this impact can be optimised. The model of the expression of artistic individuality of future music teachers has been created and substantiated both theoretically and empirically. The model encompasses the components of reflexivity, creativity, high artistic value and responsibility. Manifestations of artistic individuality in musical activity of future teachers and the level of expression of these manifestations, interrelations between components of artistic individuality and their dependence on the external factors (the type of higher education institution that provides different musical education (university, non-university) and the year the students are in, as well as internal factors (musical abilities, artistic experiences and recognition of the significance of values) have been revealed by the diagnostic examination. This essay examines the differences and similarities, weaknesses and strengths of the two Cognitive Semantic theories Conceptual Metaphor Theory and Principled Polysemy Approach to Meaning Analysis. To illustrate the two theories, the Swedish verb-particle construction "gå upp" is examined and analyzed accordingly. The results showed differences in the number of polysemous meaning found. The methodological evaluation showed that the differences in the underlying ideas concerning meaning-construction behind these two theories make them incompatible.

Subjetividade, crônica, ilustração, jornalismo impresso e produção de sentido. O que esses termos têm em comum? Mais do que apresentar uma opinião pessoal, a crônica e a ilustração, frutos de uma indústria cultural que chega ao Brasil em meados do século XX, influenciam outra visão social, uma vez que se caracterizam pela busca incessante em captar um momento da realidade e interpretá-lo por meio do texto ou do traço. Os meios de comunicação atraem a atenção do leitor pelas diferentes maneiras de informar ou comentar uma notícia. Ao longo da evolução do jornalismo impresso, colunas de informação foram adaptadas ao jornal e o uso da ilustração passou a ser um recurso utilizado para produção de sentido na realidade. Tão subjetiva quanto as crônicas, editoriais e comentários, a ilustração hoje é empregada diariamente no meio impresso, devido ao avanço proporcionado pelas novas tecnologias e também pela boa recepção que obteve junto ao público leitor que cada vez mais consume imagens. A partir dessa perspectiva, temos a inegável importância de se estudar a relação entre o texto e a imagem para compreendermos a implicação do verbal e do não verbal através das novas propostas de comunicação. Na presente dissertação, verificaremos a produção de sentido entre determinadas crônicas de Arnaldo Jabor e ilustrações de Cido Gonçalves publicadas no Caderno 2 do jornal O Estado de S. Subjectivity, chronics, illustration, printed journalism and production of meaning. What do these terms have in common? More than presenting a personal opinion, chronics and illustrations, offspring of a cultural industry that arrives in Brazil in the beginning of the 20th century, influence other social vision, once they are characterized by a restless search to capture a moment of reality and interpret it through text or illustration. The means of communication attracts the reader’s attention through different ways of informing or commenting a piece of news. During the evolution of printed journalism, columns of information were adapted to the newspaper and the use of illustration started being a resource used in the construction of a new production of meaning over the reality. As subjective as the chronics, editorials and comments, the illustration is used nowadays in a daily basis in the printed media, due to the evolution enabled by the new technologies and also by the good acceptance which received along to the readers which more and more consumes images. From this perspective, there is the undeniable importance of studying the relationship between text and image to understand the implication of the verbal and non-verbal through the new propositions of communication. In the present dissertation, we are going to check the production of meaning among determined chronics by Arnaldo Jabor and the illustrations of Cido Gonçalves published in Caderno 2 of the O Estado de S. The research presented in this thesis is intended to reveal the layers of social and cultural meaning invested in a building conventionally regarded as a work of abstract aesthetic modernism, and one which has been evaluated, within the framework of a national heritage preservation policy, as an architectural landmark of the post-war era of urban reconstruction. By combining the research methods of architectural history (archival) and of anthropology (ethnographic) I have located and interpreted the architecture of the Brunswick within a larger social story that demonstrates how the lived experience of a particular environment exists in parallel with the more objective official discourse that invests a work of architecture or art with cultural significance. The thesis traces the architectural inception and complex evolution of the building, its critical reception, and the proposals for redevelopment that culminated in a major refurbishment and transformation of the shopping precinct in 2006. It goes on to present an ethnographic account of the Brunswick as a social, as much as an architectural space, and an anthropological interpretation of the relationship between identity and place in terms of the specific qualities of the built environment. It shows that the material environment becomes real and vivid to people as an embodiment of the social dimensions of their lives, and that the boundaries between ‘inside’ and ‘outside’ – the private space of the home, and the layered sequence of public spaces extending through the building to the city beyond - are not objectively fixed, but subjectively perceived and negotiated in different ways. Although the Brunswick exerts considerable power as a unique architectural image, its boundaries do not define an integrated social space, nor a unified experience of the place as a living environment. Nevertheless, repeated interaction and sensory experience make it a tangible architectural framework for everyday and domestic life which evidently shapes the view from the inside looking out. The research aims to make a significant contribution to knowledge at a meeting-point between anthropology and architecture, which might help to inform future understanding of the interaction between people and the built habitat in modern urban societies.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether the Dove Campaign for Real Beauty could be used to effectively expand the media-narrowed definition of beauty. This study focused on the Onslaught video and corresponding message board. The sample included 119 posts written by 85 different message board users. Both a descriptive and interpretive content analysis based on reception analysis was used to deconstruct the message posters' interpretation and construction of individual beauty. The posters used the board primarily to express themselves, attach blame to the media and arrive at consensus. Overall, the users responded positively to the campaign. Twenty themes emerged from the posts, with the most prevalent attaching blame to the media for societal problems. The findings of this study suggest that Dove effectively created an online community where women could find a voice to express themselves and share experiences. More importantly, Dove initiated a public discussion that is a preliminary step in changing social norms. As such, the campaign should be viewed as having been effective.

Esta pesquisa é dedicada à relação entre proximidade e afastamento, provacada pelas imagens da mídia, por meio dos vínculos que tais superfícies produzem na mediação entre homem e mundo, e entre homem e a própria mídia. Com o objetivo de colaborar com a ampliação do estatuto epistemológico do jornalismo visual, este estudo considera que os sentidos produzidos pela informação visual são componentes importantes na construção discursiva das notícias. Por ser uma relação binária, polar e assimétrica, proximidade e afastamento atribuem à comunicação imagética cargas ora positivas, ora negativas, de acordo com sua configuração e contexto. A partir dessa dicotomia, serão analisadas diferentes formas de utilização das imagens no jornalismo brasileiro, especialmente nos suportes impressos e on-line, de acordo com estratégias discursivas que permitem aproximar ou afastar o observador da informação ou da própria midia. A construção teórica e conceitual do trabalho forma-se, principalmente, a partir dos estudos do teórico da mídia Harry Pross (sobre a teoria relacional dos signos e estrutura simbólica do poder), do filósofo Vilém Flusser (ao tratar sobre as formas de leitura das imagens), entre outros autores como Hans Belting, Dietmar Kamper e, do Brasil, Norval Baitello Junior, Malena Segura Contrera e Luciano Guimarães
This research is dedicated to the relationship between proximity and remoteness, caused by media imagens, through the ties that such surfaces produce in the mediation between man and world, and between man and the media itself. The purpose of the research is support the epistemological expansion of visual journalism and it considers that the senses produced by the visual information are important in the discursive news construction. Proximity and remoteness have a binary, polar and asymmetric relation and because of this it attaches to imagery communication sometimes positive and sometimes negative load, according to its configuration and context. Different ways of using images in Brasilian journalism from this dichotomy will be analyzed, particularly in printed and online media. This will be according to the discursive strategies that allow the viewer zoom in or out of the information or the media itself. The theoretical and conepctual construction of work is mainly created from the media studies theorist Harry Poss (about the relational theory of signs and symbolic structure of power). What does it mean to occupy the other side of what is - to “be” the nothing that lies beyond being? Or, in other words: Where yonder the End of Philosophy? Thus reads the first and final line of inquiry that we, the philosophers of this age, are impelled to pursue. Such is the case, I contend, in light of the fact that our time quite simply is that of the eschatological aftermath, the “postmodern” era where the purportedly “greatest” thinkers of our immediate past, Martin Heidegger and Ludwig Wittgenstein, have, each in his own way, already declared philosophical moratorium. Yet it seems to me there is curious and vital affinity to the philosophical legacy these thinkers, whose mark on history is, paradoxically, so wide and so deep as to be at once indelible and invisible. Accordingly, this thesis seeks to render Heidegger and Wittgenstein, each a formidable critic of the philosophical tradition, as mutually complementary voices, speaking not of an end-to-be, but on the way beyond the end-that-is-past. In writing on the disjunctive parallelism evident in their famed non-encounter, I hope to clarify the nature and purpose of contemporary philosophical practice. My principal argument is that, in locating philosophy, conceived as a thematic study of the being of what is, within language, Wittgenstein and Heidegger both came to view language itself as the pre-philosophical nothing, which, in its wordless non-identity or self-difference, presents a way beyond the word and world of traditional philosophical thinking. It is my hope that, in outlying the shared strains of their respective critical disclosures of the relation between language and philosophy, I will be able to say not the same, but something yet unsaid, addressing our time, the time after the end, as a period of continued, self-critical thinking and speaking about that which, as the difference between the spoken word and that which is, prepares the way towards an experience of the hitherto “impossible” meaning of non-being.

Esta tese apresenta elucidações técnicas e interpretações póscomposicionais de quatro peças compostas durante o doutorado: “Io” e “Calisto”, para piano solo, “Ganimedes” e “Europa”, para dois pianos. A composição musical é abordada em três etapas: a) descrição dos aspectos musicais e extramusicais dos primeiros estágios da composição; b) investigação das características sonoras das peças; c) construção de interpretações ficcionais pós-composicionais, imaginando as luas de Júpiter como ímpeto composicional e interpretativo. O terceiro estágio é realizado na perspectiva da teoria contemporânea das metáforas, tal qual proposta por George Lakoff e Mark Johnson e, posteriormente, por Mark Turner e Gilles Falconnier. Através da apresentação das categorias de metáforas, cruzamentos de mapeamento de domínios, esquemas de imagens, princípio de invariância, espaços conceptuais e mesclagem conceptual, se estabelecem, neste trabalho, conexões entre os conceitos metafóricos e a conceptualização metafórica da música. Isso contribui para a aproximação entre as características marcantes das peças e as cenas/ações propostas como primeira etapa das interpretações pós-composicionais, construídas pelo compositor. O trabalho propõe-se a pensar sobre a atribuição de significados da composição musical em uma perspectiva global, em que elementos extramusicais podem expandir a assimilação do fenômeno musical, bem como contribuir para a pedagogia da composição musical e para a produção de trabalhos colaborativos.
This thesis presents technical elucidations and post-compositional interpretations of four pieces composed during my doctorate degree: "Io" and "Calisto", for solo piano, "Ganimedes" and "Europa" for two pianos. The music composition is approached in three steps: a) description of the musical and extra musical aspects of the first stages of the composition; b) investigation of the sonorous characteristics of the pieces; c) construction of fictional postcompositional interpretations, imagining Jupiter's moons as compositional and interpretative impetus. The third stage is achieved under the perspective of the contemporary theory of metaphor proposed by George Lakoff and Mark Johnson, and posteriorly developed by Mark Turner and Gilles Falconnier. Through the introduction of metaphor categories, the cross-domain mapping, the image schema, the invariance principle, the mental spaces and the conceptual blending, some connections are established between the metaphoric concepts and the metaphoric conceptualization of music. This contributes to the approximation between the main characteristics of the pieces and the scenes/actions proposed in the first step of the post-compositional interpretations. This work proposes a reflection about the attribution of meanings on the musical composition in a global perspective, where extra musical elements can expand the assimilation of the musical phenomenon, as well as to contribute to the pedagogy of musical composition and the production of collaborative works.

This qualitative study was designed to explore the experiences and perceptions of a group of mothers whose elementary school-aged children met the criteria for intellectual giftedness in an Ontario school board. Guided by Beach and Mitchell’s image theory and Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory, the study sought to identify (a) the meanings mothers ascribed to the concept of giftedness, (b) their experiences of the assessment, identification and placement process, and (c) the factors deemed important to educational decision making. A postpositivist orientation and rigorous qualitative research methods were employed. Data were collected in two phases: an internet-based survey comprised of demographic items and open ended questions, followed by in-depth interviews with five purposefully selected participants. Resultant data from 45 surveys and 15 interviews were coded and organized according to the survey questions and central elements of the theoretical framework. Eight research findings revealed that the experience of mothering gifted children was complex, challenging, emotional, and at times, isolating. Many mothers struggled with the concept of giftedness and how it pertained to their children. As mothers navigated the assessment, identification and placement process, the lack of accessible, timely, and consistent information from the school board posed a considerable barrier, prompting many to reach out to other parents of gifted children for information and support. Factors deemed important to decision making about educational placement included maternal perceptions related to the various options, child specific and practical considerations, and the attainability of specialized gifted programming. Educational decision making was identified as the most difficult aspect of the maternal experience. Given that the study participants were unusually well educated and well resourced, the findings were particularly revealing. The study findings add to a small but growing body of research that furthers our understanding of image theory in real life decision making. In addition, the findings give voice to the experience of mothering children identified as gifted, thus making a valuable and original contribution to the literature.

Problem Formulation: Is the consumers perceived brand personality of a celebrity endorser affected by a marketing activity and its transferred personality? Purpose: The purpose of this study is to explain the correlation and relation between the perceived brand personality of a celebrity endorser and a marketing activity he or she partakes in. Theoretical Framework: The frame of reference consists of existing theories regarding brand personality, celebrity endorsement, the Meaning of Transfer Model and Marketing Activities. Method: This study has chosen a deductive quantitative experimental research design. The collected primary data is consisting of 159 respondents divided into three groups who answered an group specific online survey which was distributed through private social media channels. Empirical Findings: The results in this study comprehends of 159 respondents attitude of a celebrity endorser, which has been analysed through statistical methods. Conclusion: The study’s results point out that there is no significant change on a celebrity endorsers perceived brand personality affected by the effect of a marketing activity, which can be statistically proven. The results showed a slight variance, however these are most likely a result of random.

The stores are seen as textual arrangements that allow the academic research of spatial manifestations. These, in turn, grant the opportunity of understanding what is lived in day-to-day practices of circulation and consumption of the surroundings. Without failing to consider that in commercial and urban spaces, strong proponents such as the city’s government and the economic enablers (brands), operate in an articulate way that act in do-believe, do-do, do-feel. Based on the analysis of several retail spaces in the street of São Paulo, Farm’s brand store, located in Vila Madalena, in the city of São Paulo, was selected as the object of this research. In order to analyze its identity, it will be taken into account its connection with the Beco do Batman and the Harmonia street. This research aims answer the following: how does the Farm’s store, through the its speech construction promote experiences and dialogue with the values of the surroundings? Farm’s relationship with the social and physical environment allows us to see how the values of one subject, figuratively, interpenetrate the production of sense and identity of the other. Thus, symbolic and semi-symbolic elements are used to communicate messages of tradition, mission and style, that the enunciator elects to give to his axiology. The discursive semiotics of Greimas (and followers) makes it possible to evidence the senses that emerge at the point of sale, in its generative path of meaning. The relations that evoke sense-making will be identified using the narratives between subjects according to Landowski. From this foundation, the research intends to point out how the dynamics of interaction between target subjects and recipients operate in the construction of meaning. These, concretised in the plasticity and syncretism with more elements of the expression, supported by studies of Floch and Oliveira. Thus, symbolic and semi-symbolic elements are used to communicate messages of tradition, mission and style that the enunciator elects to give to see its axiology. This research will therefore, bring contributions to the students of space, and to those of the consumption and communication universe
As lojas são vistas como arranjos textuais que permitem a investigação pelos estudiosos de manifestações espaciais, o que abre oportunidades de compreensão do vivido nas práticas diárias de circulação e consumo do entorno, sem deixar de considerar que, nos espaços comerciais e urbanos, fortes destinadores operam de modo articulado, tais como a administração pública da cidade e os destinadores econômicos (marcas), que atuam em fazer-crer, fazer-fazer, fazer-sentir. A partir da análise de diversos espaços do varejo nas ruas paulistana, foi selecionado como corpus de estudos a loja da marca Farm, situada na Rua Harmonia, no bairro Vila Madalena, na cidade de São Paulo. Para analisar a construção do simulacro da identidade da marca, será levada em consideração sua conexão com o Beco do Batman e os comércios da rua. Busca-se responder à seguinte questão: como a loja Farm, nos modos de construção de seu discurso, promove experiências que dialogam com os valores do entorno? Essa relação da loja Farm com o meio social e físico permite entrever como os valores de um sujeito, figurativizados, interpenetram a produção do efeito de sentido de identidade do outro. A semiótica discursiva de Greimas e seguidores possibilita elucidar os sentidos que emergem no ponto de venda, em seu percurso gerativo de sentido. As relações que convocam o fazer-sensível serão identificadas a partir das narrativas entre os sujeitos, segundo postulado da sociosemiótica de Landowski. Dessa fundamentação, a pesquisa aponta como a dinâmica das interações entre sujeitos destinadores e destinatários opera na construção de sentido. Essas relações concretizam-se na análise da plasticidade e sincretismo dos elementos da expressão, sustentada por estudos de Floch e Oliveira. Assim, distinguem-se elementos simbólicos e semissimbólicos utilizados para comunicar mensagens de tradição, missão e estilo que o enunciador elege para dar a ver sua axiologia. A pesquisa trará contribuições tanto para os estudiosos do espaço, quanto para aqueles do universo do consumo e da comunicação

Resumo: Esta pesquisa é dedicada à relação entre proximidade e afastamento, provacada pelas imagens da mídia, por meio dos vínculos que tais superfícies produzem na mediação entre homem e mundo, e entre homem e a própria mídia. Com o objetivo de colaborar com a ampliação do estatuto epistemológico do jornalismo visual, este estudo considera que os sentidos produzidos pela informação visual são componentes importantes na construção discursiva das notícias. Por ser uma relação binária, polar e assimétrica, proximidade e afastamento atribuem à comunicação imagética cargas ora positivas, ora negativas, de acordo com sua configuração e contexto. A partir dessa dicotomia, serão analisadas diferentes formas de utilização das imagens no jornalismo brasileiro, especialmente nos suportes impressos e on-line, de acordo com estratégias discursivas que permitem aproximar ou afastar o observador da informação ou da própria midia. A construção teórica e conceitual do trabalho forma-se, principalmente, a partir dos estudos do teórico da mídia Harry Pross (sobre a teoria relacional dos signos e estrutura simbólica do poder), do filósofo Vilém Flusser (ao tratar sobre as formas de leitura das imagens), entre outros autores como Hans Belting, Dietmar Kamper e, do Brasil, Norval Baitello Junior, Malena Segura Contrera e Luciano Guimarães
Abstract: This research is dedicated to the relationship between proximity and remoteness, caused by media imagens, through the ties that such surfaces produce in the mediation between man and world, and between man and the media itself. The purpose of the research is support the epistemological expansion of visual journalism and it considers that the senses produced by the visual information are important in the discursive news construction. Proximity and remoteness have a binary, polar and asymmetric relation and because of this it attaches to imagery communication sometimes positive and sometimes negative load, according to its configuration and context. Different ways of using images in Brasilian journalism from this dichotomy will be analyzed, particularly in printed and online media. This will be according to the discursive strategies that allow the viewer zoom in or out of the information or the media itself. The theoretical and conepctual construction of work is mainly created from the media studies theorist Harry Poss (about the relational theory of signs and symbolic structure of power). It's also created from the philosopher Vilém Flusser (on how to handle the reading of images), besides other authors such as Hans Belting, Dietmar Kamper and, of Brazil, Norval Baitello Junior, Malena Segura Contrera and Luciano Guimarães

Le projet philosophique de Ricoeur peut être défini comme celui d’une anthropologie philosophique. Dans ce cadre, un rôle central est accordé à l’imagination à partir des ressources de la phénoménologie, de l’herméneutique, et de la philosophie réflexive. La question de l’image demeure pourtant assez mal connue et a été peu explorée ; elle serait même dévalorisée dès lors qu’elle est ramenée au cadre d’une imagination reproductrice, par opposition à l’imagination vive de l’anthropologie ricoeurienne, et en raison de l’insistance sur le rapport langagier au sens. Or, plutôt qu’une opposition entre le plan de l’image et celui du sens, c’est bien une articulation de ces deux plans qui doit être considérée. La question du symbolisme ouverte par Ricoeur depuis sa Philosophie de la volonté sert de point de départ à notre investigation. De cette première herméneutique jusqu’à La mémoire, l’histoire, l’oubli, en passant par De l’interprétation. Essai sur Freud, La Métaphore vive, et Temps et récit, on peut également dire que l’image donne à penser. La question du symbolisme ne peut toutefois être séparée de celle de l’imagination. Il est ainsi nécessaire de relier deux cheminements de la philosophie ricoeurienne à partir de la question du symbolisme, l’un qui s’oriente dans la voie d’une herméneutique – le parcours jusqu’au positionnement fixé par Du texte à l’action –, l’autre qui relie le projet d’une anthropologie philosophique aux champs de l’art et de l’esthétique. Dès lors, notre recherche s’organise autour de quatre parties. Une première partie se concentre sur l’articulation entre la philosophie ricoeurienne de l’imagination et l’esthétique philosophique en abordant la perspective herméneutique comme la condition d’effectivité de cette articulation. Prolongeant cette orientation herméneutique, une deuxième partie cherche à établir un lien entre la conception ricoeurienne d’une herméneutique critique et la question de l’image. Parallèlement au cadre d’une herméneutique critique, une troisième partie s’attache à définir l’imagination comme le lieu d’une médiation entre le plan de l’art et celui de l’expérience en revenant sur la lecture ricoeurienne de la philosophie analytique et plus spécifiquement de la philosophie analytique de l’art. Prenant appui sur les précédentes parties, une quatrième partie considère finalement le champ du cinéma, en articulant des plans ontologique, narratif, et social à une herméneutique philosophique
Ricoeur’s philosophical project can be broadly termed as a philosophical anthropology. Within this context, a main role is given to the issue of imagination through the resources of phenomenology, hermeneutics, and reflexive philosophy. The issue of picture, however, remains quite unknown and has not been much questioned; it might even be undermined by being reduced to the context of reproductive imagination as opposed to that of productive imagination within Ricoeur’s anthropology, and due to the emphasis on the linguistic relationship to sense or meaning. Yet, instead of opposing the plane of picture to the plane of sense or meaning, an articulated connection between those two planes should be sought. The issue of symbolism opened by Ricoeur in his Philosophie de la volonté provides the starting point for our investigation. From that early hermeneutics on to La mémoire, l’histoire, l’oubli, via De l’interprétation. Essai sur Freud, La Métaphore vive, and Temps et récit, one could also consider that picture makes us think. But the issue of symbolism cannot be distinguished from that of imagination. One also has to link two paths of Ricoeur’s philosophy through the issue of symbolism, one that is orientated in the path of hermeneutics – the progression to the standpoint set by Du texte à l’action –, another that links the project of a philosophical anthropology to the fields of art and aesthetics. The research is thus structured around four parts. A first part is focused on the articulated connection between Ricoeur’s philosophy of imagination and philosophical aesthetics by addressing the hermeneutical prospect as the condition for the effectiveness of this connection. Extending this hermeneutical stance, a second part seeks to establish a bond between Ricoeur’s notion of a critical hermeneutics and the issue of picture. A third part, concurrent with the context of a critical hermeneutics, aims to consider imagination as mediating the plane of art and the plane of experience by referring to Ricoeur’s reading of analytic philosophy and, more specifically, analytic philosophy of art. Relying on the previous parts, a fourth part finally addresses the field of film, articulating ontological, narrative, and social layers to a philosophical hermeneutics
