In this study, basic techniques which are used in botanical illustration are examined. Undoubtedly the most basic and accessible technique for the illustration artists is pencil and ink. Artists who have been drawing for years have used this technique with the decorations on the books and although technological developments present us unlimited opportunities today, basic illustration techniques; pencil, ink and watercolour technique has kept its place. It is necessary for this basic illustration technique to contain main features such as line, tone, colour, texture, shape, size. Just as all the artists who are dealing with illustration, artists-scientists who are dealing with botanic have also benefited from these techniques. as a result, no matter if it serves for art or for science, these techniques have always had an important place in creation of visual data for the development of humanity.    Keywords: Botanical Illustration, botanical illustration techniques, watercolour techniques, charcoal drawing technique, ink technique, gouache painting technique, ekolin.

Streszczenie:
Alternative approaches in illustration language have constantly been developing in terms of material and technical aspects. Illustration languages also differ in terms of semantics and form. Differences in formal expressions for increasing the effect of the subject on the audience lead to diversity in the illustrations. M. C. Escher’s three-dimensional images to be perceived in a two-dimensional environment, together with mathematical and symmetry-oriented studies and the systematic formed by a numerical structure in its background, are associated with the notion of illustration in terms of fictional meaning. Istvan Orosz used the technique of anamorphosis and made it possible for people to see their perception abilities and visual perception sensitivities in different environments created by him. This study identifies new approaches and illustration languages based on the works of both artists, bringing an alternative proposition to illustration languages in terms of systematic sub-structure and fictional idea sketches. Keywords: Perception, illusion, illustration, fictional illustration, illustration languages, visual perception.

The article, which is based on visual research, examines the issue of infantilism in contemporary illustration, specifically what has caused it. This study provides an explanation for why we have illustrations not only drawn in the same technique, but also depicting the same things. Our world is increasingly explained by pictures. It is logical to track the trends in modern society through pictures, or rather, to consider the works of artists and track their train of thought. The examples and patterns described in the study lead us to the fact that now the world and Russian illustration is filled with infantilism, making up a whole current. This is indicated by the technique, the work with characters, the choice of subjects and even the color used by artists who create infantile images. On the basis of which in the article the author suggests "infantilism" as a definition of the direction in modern illustration.

This article reviews the collaboration between clinician and illustrator throughout the ages while highlighting the era of cardiac surgery. Historical notes are based on Professor Sanjib Kumar Ghosh’s extensive review, literature searches, and the archives of the Johns Hopkins University Department of Art as related to Medicine in Baltimore. Personal communications were explored with medical illustrators and medical practitioners, many of whom are colleagues and trainees, to further chronicle the history of medical illustration and education in the era of cardiac surgery. Medical illustrators use their talents and expressive ideas to demonstrate procedures and give them life. These methods are (1) hovering technique; (2) hidden anatomy, ghosted views, or transparency; (3) centrally focused perspective; (4) action techniques to give life to the procedure; (5) use of insets to highlight one part of the drawing; (6) human proportionality using hands or known objects to show size; and (7) step-by-step educational process to depict the stages of a procedure. Vivid examples showing these techniques are demonstrated. The result of this observational analysis underscores the importance of the collaboration between clinician and illustrator to accurately describe intricate pathoanatomy, three-dimensional interrelated anatomic detail, and complex operations. While there are few data to measure the impact of the atlas on medical education, it is an undeniable assertion that anatomical and surgical illustrations have helped to educate and train the modern-day surgeon, cardiologist, and related health-care professionals.

In this article, I introduce the device of close reading in historical academic contexts through to contemporary queer-theoretical thought and open this up to illustration research and practice. Illustration seeks to capture the paradox of the representable and the unseen; this puts an emphasis on illustration as elucidating. For this reason, its historical origins in illumination remain core to how the subject is taught. However, if we are asking illustrators to illuminate and offer clarity on a subject, should we also ask what is being concealed? It is my intention to explore how illustration methods have the capacity to bring overlooked histories to the fore and consider what an illustrative close reading practice may offer as a visual historicizing technique.

The article presents the findings of the psycholinguistic experiments based on the semantic differential technique. The experiments’ objective was to identify the effect of illustration on a verbal text perception. We compared the respondents’ assessment of verbal texts and illustrated texts (with illustrations in major and minor color schemes). The data analysis reveals seven factors: Assessment , Naturalness , Strength , Imagery , Romanticism , Dynamism , Commonality . We identified the illustrations parameters affecting the assessment of creolized texts: adding any illustration, the illustration color scheme matching the verbal text content, the color scheme naturalness, the illustration color scheme matching the text emotional and semantic dominant, the use of minor color scheme. The most pragmatic potential was identified in the parameter “(non)matching the color scheme with the semantic dominant of the text” (it is important for the assessment of five out of seven factors). We found that both conformity ( Strength factor assessment) and inconsistency (for Dynamism , Imagery , Romance , Evaluation factors assessment) can be significant. The text creolization increases its Imagery and changes Romanticism factors. The color scheme matching the image content increases the text Naturalness assessment, and an unnatural color scheme decreases it. There was a decrease in Assessment if a minor color scheme was used.

Streszczenie:
Colour is a basic aspect of perception and the perception of colour varies from individual to individual. This indicates that the perception of colours mean different semantics in various contexts to different individuals. Therefore, these differences in perception forms to behave in different attitudes towards colours among individuals and it is likely to achieve different attitudinal responses to colours from individuals. Relying on the effects of colours on individuals, the initial interest of this thesis is to explore the attitudinal approaches of individuals to colours. This thesis is first and foremost exploratory in nature. This thesis intended as a first step towards exploring the ways in which the individuals think of, construe and give meaning to colours in their own words. The subjective approach proposed in terms of this thesis is based on the underlying philosophy behind Personal Construct Theory (PCT). In order to elicit the individuals&rsquo
ways of construing and giving meaning to colours in their own words, an experiment was conducted with the utilisation of the Repertory Grid Technique (RGT). Sixty undergraduate students of Middle East Technical University (METU) Faculty of Architecture were voluntarily participated in the experiment. As a stimuli, eleven basic colours which were black, grey, white, yellow, orange, red, pink, purple, brown, blue and green were utilised. For the second step, this thesis intended investigating the structure and interrelations between the elicited attitudes of individuals and eleven basic colours. As a result of the experiment, 60 repertory grids were elicited and were analysed by using the qualitative and quantitative applications of content analysis. The resulted data afterwards were analysed by using multivariate statistical analysis methods. The overall results of this research can support certain information for further scientific investigations on colour perception and colour psychology. Additionally, the results of this research can help and guide designers to attain objective understandings about the individuals&rsquo
attitudes to colours. This can contribute to designers as a practical worthwhile during colour design and colour planning in their products and services.

Between the first photograph taken from the moon in 1840 by J.W. Draper and the first photograph taken from our satellite’s ground in 1969 by Apollo 11’s mission, western space odyssey led to a wide range of images. They all had the common goal of understanding, apprehending and sharing the aspect of cosmos with as many people as possible. Evidently absorbed by a collective culture, this heterogeneous and multifaceted corpus with many complex boundaries is based on a cultural history, which remains hard to classify, between science history and images history. The resulting visualizations, heavily influenced by the traditions of the history of representation and made in parallel of the technical evolutions of astronomy and its means of observation, have equally shaped the look of physical astronomy and of the visual culture of its neophyte observers. The analysis of the creation and the fulfilment of Space Art in the twentieth century make us open our eyes on a visual corpus where the coalescence between science and style is a necessary condition to its really existence. Confronted to History of Arts and to visual studies, this corpus finds its place within an analysis, which pursues to disclose the power and the performative quality of images. Whether it be an imagery popularizing the deepest knowledge for teaching purposes, a will of grabbing the image of cosmos in order to discover it or a cultural dissemination at the heart of the most important myths of the century, spatial exploration was also an experience of the look we need to observe

Thesis (MPhil (Visual Arts. Illustration))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009.
When dealing with emergent literacy in South Africa, the didactic aspects of picture books are often privileged over their aesthetic quality and the idea of reading for pleasure. The themes of the books are not always locally relevant and for economic reasons, they often fail to reach the communities that need them the most. By looking at the history of relief printing within a community environment, I hope to highlight how communities themselves may be able to develop locally relevant children’s picture books, instituting a ‘grassroots’ approach rather than the paternalistic ‘top down’ approach of the past. I will also be looking at the narrative and stylistic elements of relief printing that are complimentary to the picture book genre and how these can be utilised for a pleasurable rather than didactic approach to the narratives.

Introduction: Although the hackneyed adage "one picture is worth a thousand words" defies proof and begs argument, the basic value of illustration in graphic communications is beyond dispute. Without attempting to put a relative value on illustration as compared with words, we can still be aware of the special effectiveness of images, in accomplishing communication goals. The roots of illustration go hack to prehistoric pictorial art of engraved or painted figures done on stone. The hand print can be interpreted as one of the first attempts at drawing. Prehistoric pictorial art depicted visually what could not be expressed by word or gestures some had religious significance, some the presence of myth, others plainly diadactic, showing daily life, social communication, the magic of the hunt, death, birth, group life and sexual symbolism. Little is known of the vast lapse of time between prehistoric art and the imagery that man devised in the service of developing civilisations at the dawn of history. With steadily increasing demands upon his skills, the artisan's mastery of the tools and materials progressed, so that by the beginning of recorded time he was in possession of the potential elements for printmaking. Yet the importance of communication, as we know it today, only developed centuries later with the motivating force of religion. The print could tell its story to those who could not read or write but could quickly grasp the meaning of a picture.

Andreani, Nicola.

This thesis focuses to question the very principle of sequentiality of still images, that is to understand how in Sequential Art this dynamic takes different forms, but at the same time, how Sequential Art can be differentiated from other Arts. This help us to understand why it became an autonomous art, why it has developed more than any other sequential art, how and when the Comic was actually created.Analyze the rise of the Comics means tracing a path through the works, authors and the basic movements, considering the new poetics, themes, techonologies, that have defined this. This work aims to identify works which form a connection between the Middle Ages and the Modern Age. A historical analysis, but also paradigmatic one, will help to better understand how Comics evolved, what influences have had other forms of art (such as painting, literature, theater or caricature) but, above all, which techniques and strategies have been implemented and have changed Comics toward a narrative system based on images

“In the beginning God created Heaven and Earth”. Opening of the first chapter of the Genesis, the most well-known incipit of all time sums up both the imagery and the main idea of the Creation of the World that has existed in the west for thousands of years. However, this biblical conception of Creation starts to weaken in the beginning of the XVIIth century and to expand to embrace scientific views when secular ideas of evolution or the laws of mechanics shook the biblical tradition of the six-Day Creation narrative. The once unique idea of a World Creation becomes a more complex concept at the crossroads between sacred and profaneand authorized innovative pictures representing, for example, God blowing the Cartesian cosmogenic whirlpools or giving thrust to the terrestrial mechanism inspired by Voltaire. When the groundbreaking theories on the Creation were published, it was necessary to focus on the artistic reinterpretations of the myth. Based on a great diversity of images – biblical, scientific, alchemical – we’ll try to analyze how biblical iconography stands still at the time of the global secularization of the world in which, as a paradoxical authority or an unconscious standard, the image of the Creator holds up the complex relationship between Man and his Mythology

AbstractThe use of physical mutagens to induce heritable genetic variation in crop plants dates back to the beginning of the twentieth century. While X-rays were the first to be used for mutation induction in plants, gamma-rays have been the most widely used physical mutagen. Currently gamma induced mutations represents 60% of the registered mutant varieties in the Mutant Variety Database of the Joint FAO/IAEA Centre of Nuclear Techniques in Food and Agriculture. Beside gamma and X-rays, other physical mutagens include neutrons, beta particles, alpha particles, protons and ion beam. This chapter introduces the technique of physical mutagenesis with emphasis on gamma-ray and X-ray irradiation of seeds in cereals in the context of inducing genetic variation for resistance to the parasitic weed, Striga. Easy to follow step-by-step protocols are explained including sample preparation, treatment application and post-treatment handling of irradiated seeds. Data collection and graphic illustration are presented to estimate the optimum dose for bulk treatment to determine the radio-sensitivity of cereal crops. The last section briefly explains the development and handling of mutant populations by way of introduction to the rest of this book on mutation breeding in cereals for resistance to Striga.

AbstractMachine learning is a broad field of study that can be applied in many areas of science. In mining, it has already been used in many cases, for example, in the mineral sorting process, in resource modeling, and for the prediction of metallurgical variables. In this paper, we use for defining estimation domains, which is one of the first and most important steps to be taken in the entire modeling process. In unsupervised learning, cluster analysis can provide some interesting solutions for dealing with the stationarity in defining domains. However, choosing the most appropriate technique and validating the results can be challenging when performing cluster analysis because there are no predefined labels for reference. Several methods must be used simultaneously to make the conclusions more reliable. When applying cluster analysis to the modeling of mineral resources, geological information is crucial and must also be used to validate the results. Mining is a dynamic activity, and new information is constantly added to the database. Repeating the whole clustering process each time new samples are collected would be impractical, so we propose using supervised learning algorithms for the automatic classification of new samples. As an illustration, a dataset from a phosphate and titanium deposit is used to demonstrate the proposed workflow. Automating methods and procedures can significantly increase the reproducibility of the modeling process, an essential condition in evaluating mineral resources, especially for auditing purposes. However, although very effective in the decision-making process, the methods herein presented are not yet fully automated, requiring prior knowledge and good judgment.

Streszczenie:
The well-known technique of power series is exploited here to find a recurrence algorithm to solve strongly nonlinear oscillators. A wide variety of nonlinearities may be tackled with this approach. Simple recurrence relationship are obtained after some algebra handling. Three illustrations are analytically developed and numerically solved: a parametrically excited nonlinear oscillator, the differential equation of motion of a moored structure with non-truncated mooring nonlinearities and the classical Lorenz oscillator. In the first illustration a strongly nonlinear parametric oscillator that governs a rotor dynamics problem is solved. The results are depicted as trajectories, phase plots and Poincare´ maps. The second illustrations deals with the dynamic behavior of a simplified model of a small floating structure anchored by chains or cables. This type of structure is sometimes known as Catenary Anchor Leg Mooring (CALM) system. The structure is first modeled as a two DOF oscillator with strongly nonlinear stiffness and subjected to a harmonic wave force. A further simplification is introduced by prescribing the vertical motion as a harmonic oscillation. Then, the resulting equation is stated with a single DOF. Here the use of the power series is twofold: an algebraic recurrence algorithm is employed to obtain a nontruncated differential equation and, as in the first illustration, also used as a time integration scheme. When the forcing frequency is chosen as the bifurcation parameter, the system shows diverse type of solutions: 1-, 3-, multi-period, and quasiperiodic behavior. The third illustration deals with the well-known Lorenz system. The strange attractor is obtained without difficulties.

Leakage, especially in confined spaces, can result in hazardous concentrations of toxic or flammable fluids. Quantifying the probability that a hazardous condition occurs is dependent upon the leakage frequency, the fluid flow rate, mixing between the leaking fluid and ambient environment, the hazardous limits for the resulting mixture, as well as the time available for mitigation measures. This paper describes a generic technique for quantifying the probability that a hazardous condition occurs, and provides an illustration of the methodology application.

Streszczenie:
In the field of system and control, the treating for nonlinear system is always the hot issue in present research. The multi-model method is an important method for solving the nonlinear problem. In traditional solution, the performance of multi-model simulation is not convenient enough. In this paper, a simple, visual and convenient simulation technique is introduced. The toolbox “Simulink” which is derived from the software “Matlab” is used for simulating dynamic process. As a new original attempt, the transfer functions of system models are transformed to module charts. According to the module charts, the multi-model system module is built. The advantage of this technique is that: the coefficients in transfer functions are online controllable. Then the switch and connecting rules between sub-models are introduced. The switch and connecting rules are designed according to the actual case. All of above elements will be designed to module in Simulink workspace. Finally, an illustration is taken. With using the method recommended in this paper, the operation of the simulation is visual, simple and convenient. The technique recommended in this paper can also be suitable for other fields which include nonlinear system.

Abstract The paper deals with the design and control of forming processes. The finite element code used is based on isoparametric shell elements with three or four nodes, the workpiece being considered as a sheet metal. An optimization technique is used in order to achieve the design or the control of the process by determining the optimal process parameters. The criterion used in that purpose can be based on thickness distribution as well as the respect of the final shape desired for the product. Numerical examples are presented as illustration.

Streszczenie:
Conventional Ultrasonic Inspection of Coke Drums may require the use of Automated Pulse Echo or Time of Flight Diffraction Techniques (TOFD). The more recent application of Phased Array ultrasonic technology enables a faster and more accurate location and depth discrimination of the cracks detected in the welds. Pulse Echo ultrasonic inspection requires the use of three transducers from each side of the weld. A zero degree compression transducer and two angle transducers, most likely 60° or 70°. The advantage of this techniques is that it provides positional information as to the location of the crack in the weld and accurate length measurement. The problem is that additional techniques have to be used to determine the depth of any cracks detected. An alternative to Pulse Echo inspection is the Time of Flight Diffraction technique. The TOFD technique uses multimode transducers to insonify the weld region with Lateral, Compression and Shear Wave ultrasound. The technique accurately detects and determines the length and depth of reflectors in the weld region. The technique was initially developed for the Nuclear Industry as a sizing technique. More recently it has become used for detection and sizing of flaws. The TOFD technique does not place the flaw in the cross section of the weld in order to achieve this another technique such as Pulse Echo Ultrasound is required. The TOFD technique is not sensitive to small flaws which are open to either surface. In order to detect small flaws such as “Toe Cracks” a supplementary technique such as ACFM or Eddy Current inspection may be required. The illustration shows the format of the sound generated from a TOFD transducer arrangement. The advantage for welds < 1.50" in thickness is that careful selection of the transducers and appropriate spacing may allow the weld to be inspected in a single pass. The illustration below shows two displays, an unrectified “RF” display which corresponds to which ever cursor is active and a grey scale display adjacent. The Grey Scale Display is a stacked “RF” display where each vertical line correspond to a single location along the line of the weld non-conforming perturbations in the display indicate areas of concern which can be identified by length and depth as shown in the boxes at the lower left of the illustration. The first significant amplitude group on the grey scale display corresponds to the Lateral Wave, the second the Compression and the third the Shear Wave. Flaws detected between the Lateral and the Compression Wave are often repeated between the Compression and the Shear Waves. Phased Array technology has been available for some time, however only recently has the software been able to display the data in a format which provides clear data which can be used to locate and size of the flaws in a variety of weld configurations. Coke Drums have several significant areas of concern, Weld Seams which may be Shell to Shell, Shell to Head or Shell to Skirt format. We will consider the Circumferential Shell weld and the Skirt weld at this time. The photographs show a shell seam which reduces in section for this example the weld was inspected from one side only. The signals were corrected for Beam Path Length and the amplitudes of the signals were equalized for angle. The following data were collected: Two Notches were machined in the plate one either side of the weld on the underside. The plate was then scanned from one, the thicker, side using the Phased Array probe. The reflectors which were the same depth are depicted with a similar amplitude at their correct relative positions, one on the near and the other on the far side of the weld root. With the signals equalized all the reflector were detected from a single scan location and with similar amplitudes. The Skirt to Shell weld was simulated in a solid piece of carbon steel. EDM notch reflectors were machined in the samples at critical locations. The critical angles were calculated which would produce reflections from each of the potential crack areas and the Phased Array inspection was performed to verify the calculations. A single plot is shown as an example, containing the reflector on the Shell side near the crotch on the inside of the weld. The illustration shows the sound path of the Phased Array which detects a reflector close to the crotch on the inside between the Skirt and the Shell. Discriminating this flaw with conventional ultrasonic inspection would be extremely difficult. It is the ability of the Phased Array Sector Scan to use multiple angles on a single pass which enables flaws at multiple locations and angles to be detected by a line scan and imaged at their relative location.

Streszczenie:
The article examines modern media texts in the field of political journalism; the role of information narratives and emotional markers in media doctrine is clarified; verbal expression of rational meanings in the articles of famous Ukrainian analysts is shown. Popular theories of emotions in the process of cognition are considered, their relationship with the author’s personality, reader psychology and gonzo journalism is shown. Since the media text, in contrast to the text, is a product of social communication, the main narrative is information with the intention of influencing public opinion. Media text implies the presence of the author as a creator of meanings. In addition, media texts have universal features: word, sound, visuality (stills, photos, videos). They are traditionally divided into radio, TV, newspaper and Internet texts. The concepts of multimedia and hypertext are related to online texts. Web combinations, especially in political journalism, have intensified the interactive branching of nonlinear texts that cannot be published in traditional media. The Internet as a medium has created the conditions for the exchange of ideas in the most emotional way. Hence Gonzo’s interest in journalism, which expresses impressions of certain events in words and epithets, regardless of their stylistic affiliation. There are many such examples on social media in connection with the events surrounding the Wagnerians, the Poroshenko case, Russia’s new aggression against Ukraine, and others. Thus, the study of new features of media text in the context of modern political narratives and emotional markers is important in media research. The article focuses review of etymology, origin and features of using lexemes “cмисл (meaning)” and “сенс (sense)” in linguistic practice of Ukrainians results in the development of meanings and functional stylistic coloring in the usage of these units. Lexemes “cмисл (meaning)” and “сенс (sense)” are used as synonyms, but there are specific fields of meanings where they cannot be interchanged: lexeme “сенс (sense)” should be used when it comes to reasonable grounds for something, lexeme “cмисл (meaning)” should be used when it comes to notion, concept, understanding. Modern political texts are most prominent in genres such as interviews with politicians, political commentaries, analytical articles by media experts and journalists, political reviews, political portraits, political talk shows, and conversations about recent events, accompanied by effective emotional narratives. Etymologically, the concept of “narrative” is associated with the Latin adjective “gnarus” – expert. Speakers, philosophers, and literary critics considered narrative an “example of the human mind.” In modern media texts it is not only “story”, “explanation”, “message techniques”, “chronological reproduction of events”, but first of all the semantic load and what subjective meanings the author voices; it is a process of logical presentation of arguments (narration). The highly professional narrator uses narration as a “method of organizing discourse” around facts and impressions, impresses with his political erudition, extraordinary intelligence and creativity. Some of the above theses are reflected in the following illustrations from the Ukrainian media: “Culture outside politics” – a pro-Russian narrative…” (MP Gabibullayeva); “The next will be Russia – in the post-Soviet space is the Arab Spring…” (journalist Vitaly Portnikov); “In Russia, only the collapse of Ukraine will be perceived as success” (Pavel Klimkin); “Our army is fighting, hiding from the leadership” (Yuri Butusov).
