ABSTRACT
The use of the arts as a tool for conflict transformation, or what has been called arts based peacebuilding, is a new and emerging field. Yet, there is sparse empirical evidence on its outcomes. The Nile Project, a musical collaborative from East Africa that brings together musicians from all of the countries that border the Nile River, is aimed at finding a solution to the dire water conflict and crisis in the region. This study aims to explore how their collaborative process of creating and performing music despite their linguistic, cultural, musical, and political differences, can illuminate how music can be used to address conflict. Using a combination of collaborative qualitative and arts-informed research methodologies, original members of the collective as well as the co-founder were interviewed. Observations were also done of the musicians' rehearsals, performances, and classroom visits at a New England University and during a musical residency in Aswan, Egypt. Findings suggest that an outcome of the Nile Project's work is the development of relationships, deeper learning, particularly about other Africans, and that the process of making music with those from diverse musical traditions can act as a way to practice peacebuilding skills: creating unity, while honoring diversity. This study seeks to add to a limited amount of research documenting the arts in peacebuilding suggesting that music might be an effective tool for transforming conflict.

Syftet med min uppsats är att redogöra den process jag gått igenom för mitt examensarbete. Projektets målsättning är att utveckla och designa ett pennliknande, lätt instrument som möjliggör cellprovtagning med en hög grad av
"fingertoppskänsla".
Jag har ritat på en ny form av instrument att ersätta det som idag används vid bland annat provtagning av eventuella cancertumörer.
Under vägen har alla möjliga lösningar diskuterats, allt från en utseendemässig förändring till att ersätta hela instrumentet i form och användningsmetod. Frågor har cirkulerat kring om instrumentet bör vara mekaniskt, tekniskt eller liksom nu drivas av enbart handkraft.
Största delen av min research har bestått i att vara med under undersökningar och att göra användartester. Uppsatsen går igenom stegen för min process till slutresultatet, de val jag dragits mellan och hur jag kommit fram till lösningar för att slutligen leda fram till mitt resultat; "NILE instrumentet".

This thesis will be an exploration of the issues of building in the Egyptian landscape. Human inhabitation of the Egyptian landscape has for many thousands of years been centred within the zone of the Nile River valley. In the past, this ribbon of arable land was able to support the food requirements of the population and produce a surplus of agricultural products for export. Today, Egypt's population of 54 million exists on 30,000 km.2 of habitable area concentrated in the Nile River valley out of a total area of approximately one million sq. km. The population is growing rapidly, and in fact, in areas of urban growth, illegal building is occurring on scarce arable land. In the 1970's, in an effort to divert such growth, strategies for newtowns situated in the interior of the desert were planned, and several were executed. However, I propose to put forward an attitude of growth that would run North-South, to build on the desert edge, above and parallel to the Nile valley where existing arable land meets desert and to extend arable zones into the desert. In the course of this project, I will examine a) -as preface -the Nile valley in context to the historic development of an irrigation society: trace the domestication of the Nile. b) -as observation of the desert - formal and spatial inhabitations in the regional landscape and from other similar landscapes c) - as projection of the possible-an agricultural research centre which by its raison d'etre will maintain a distinction of what landscape is built and what remains free for new cultivation. The building will include work spaces, labs, sleeping and living facilities for both permanent and short term staff.

This thesis is a commentary on lines 1-650 of Prudentius’ hymn to the martyr Romanus. Although printed in modern editions as the tenth poem of Prudentius’ Peristephanon, a collection of poems on various martyrs, certain features of the work in form and content differentiate it from the rest of the collection. These features include its length (1,140 verses; almost twice as long as Peristephanon 2, the second longest), its title, its place in manuscript transmission, the fact that the city where Romanus’ martyrdom takes place is never mentioned, and the inclusion of long sections of anti-pagan invective. This commentary aims to investigate its singularity and attempts to establish how it fits into Prudentius’ oeuvre. In the commentary proper I provide a general philological and historical elucidation of the text. I particularly focus on language, on identifying and interpreting allusions, and on discussing themes that recur in Prudentius’ works as well as contemporary and earlier literature. In the Introduction I offer an overview of the life and works of the poet; the dating; the textual transmission; other extant sources on the martyr Romanus and the relationship between them; the question of whether this poem belonged to the collection of the Peristephanon; and generic and particular influences on the poem from both Christian and secular literature, which are often combined in the text in interesting ways. The exploration of all these aspects of the text together with the close reading offered in the commentary itself contribute to a fuller understanding of this remarkably complex work.

This thesis presents the first detailed multiproxy provenance study of the modern Nile catchment, together with Oligocene-Recent sediments of the offshore Nile cone, and demonstrates for the first time that the palaeodrainage of the Nile has remained relatively stable over the last 30 Ma. Detrital mineral and bulk-rock analyses of modern river, wadi and bedrock samples demonstrate the role of basement lithology, sedimentary recycling, and modern geomorphological features in controlling the composition of sediment reaching the Nile cone. The bulk provenance signature of the modern Nile is dominated by the input of basic detritus from the Cenozoic Ethiopian Large Igneous Province. Detrital zircon signatures are dominated by variations in bedrock lithology, and the availability of easily-eroded Phanerozoic cover sediments. These represent an important source of detritus to the river and are characterised by the presence of strongly negative εHf populations at c. 600 and 1000 Ma, and significant populations of pre-Neoproterozoic grains. Young zircon grains derived from Ethiopian Cenozoic volcanic rocks are also recognised in samples from the Blue Nile, Atbara and Nile trunk. The Sr, Nd and Hf signature of Oligocene Nile cone sediments can only be explained if there is significant input of mafic material being received from the hinterland. The Ethiopian Large Igneous Province represents the only possible source for this detritus, indicating that the Nile has been connected to the Ethiopian Highlands since this time. Zircons with U-Pb ages and hafnium isotope signatures compatible with the Ethiopian LIP have been supplied to the Nile cone since at least the Miocene (16 Ma). Such zircons were not observed in Oligocene 2 delta sediments, but Sr, Nd and Hf isotope data for Oligocene delta muds as old as 31 Ma require significant mafic input. The combined U-Pb and Hf-isotope zircon dataset for Nile catchment and cone sediments represents a significant archive that documents the evolution of the North African crust, in particular highlighting phases in the development of the Arabian Nubian Shield and amalgamation of Gondwana in late Neoproterozoic times.

The management of international waterways presents riparian nations with a challenging set of political, economic, environmental, and geographic difficulties. Historically, the Nile Basin has exemplified many of these problems as witnessed by inter-basin conflict, devastating floods, crippling drought, and unstable political and economic development. Despite their tumultuous past the ten riparian nations of the Nile Basin established a supranational water management institution in 1999, the Nile Basin Initiative (NBI), in order to develop collective solutions to their common water related problems. However, serious challenges to the cooperative process threaten to derail the NBI and enflame underlying causes of conflict. This thesis seeks to determine how the NBI has affected water related decision making in the Nile Basin. This will be achieved by examining patterns of decision-making before and after the establishment of the NBI. Specifically, the impact of the NBI will be tested by examining patterns of decision-making within three measures of conflict, namely the allocation of water resources, the sharing of technical data and expertise, and the financing of water related projects and programs.

The thesis consists of a detailed commentary on the Homeric Hymn to Delian Apollo, and prolegomena. The subjects treated in the prolegomena are: (i) the structure of hymns, and of the Homeric Hymns in particular, with a discussion of the context in which the Hymns were performed, concluding that they were probably performed at festivals as preludes to recitations of epic poetry; (ii) the narrative techniques of the Hymns, comparing them to Homer; (iii) the treatment of the gods in the Hymns, discussing the ways the gods are presented in the narratives, and the similarities to and differences from the depiction of the gods in Homer; (iv) the portrayal of Apollo and Delos in DAp, discussing the problems of depicting a god in literature, and the relationship between the myth told in the hymn and Delian cult; (v) the language of the hymn, discussing the history of studies of the Hymns' language, examples of un homeric usage and the relationship of the Hymns to Homer and Hesiod; (vi) the question of whether the hymn was orally composed, discussing the various criteria that have been used to attempt to determine this, and concluding that oral composition cannot be proved but is very likely; (vii) the problem of the hymn's unity, or lack of it, discussing the history of the various theories and concluding that the hymn is not an original unity, and that the Delian hymn was composed as an addition to the pre-existing Pythian hymn; (viii) the date of DAp, concluding that it may have been composed in the second half of the sixth century, possibly for a festival held by Polycrates in 523/2 B.C. The commentary deals with linguistic and literary points, and any religious, historical or geographical issues that are raised by particular passages.

Because they were not obliged to take on the familial tasks which until recently have defined woman's role, unmarried British women of literary talent and Christian conviction have often seen themselves as being called to the vocation of hymn-writing. Through biographical study, historical contextualisation and close reading. this thesis examines hymns written by seven such writers, over the period 1760-1936. Chapter 1 examines how Anne Steele's hymns gained entry into print, and came to be circulated and popular. It also demonstrates how the image of Steele as a sickly spinster perpetuated by the Victorian hymnologists is too limited a picture of the writer. Chapter 2 considers two labouring-class hymn writers, Susanna Harrison and Eliza Westbury, and shows how they were heavily influenced by the images and stylistic features of the earlier male hymn writers from the Evangelical tradition. Chapter 3 looks at Charlotte Elliott's writings, which were mostly for invalids, and considers how nineteenth-century Evangelicals often envisaged invalidism as a time for refinement of faith and spiritual action, and the `cult of invalidism' is contextualised. Chapter 4 considers how the writings of Dora Greenwell championed the underprivileged, and envisaged the second coming of Christ as a time for the vanquishing of evil and injustice. Chapter 5 looks at the work of Frances Ridley Havergal, one of the most popular hymn writers of the Victorian era. It considers her Evangelical background, her interest in organisations which encouraged female fellowship and ministry (such as the YWCA, the Mildmay Deaconess Institution and the Zenana missionary organisations), and the transformation of her active faith into a more contemplative one after her experience of `Consecration'. Chapter 6 examines the work and life of the Anglo-Indian hymn writer Ellen Lakshmi Goreh, and considers in further detail the opportunities offered to British women by the call for Zenana missionaries. Chapter 7 looks at the life and writings of Amy Carmichael, founder of the Dohnavur Fellowship, who spent most of her life working as a missionary in India. It shows how her hymns, which owe a debt to the Holiness Movement and its stress on the `rest of faith', and were mostly written for Indian children, are an early example of Indian inculturation.

West Nile Virus (WNV) first appeared in the western hemisphere in 1999, and has since spread across the United States and into Mexico and the Caribbean. It has been
hypothesized that WNV has spread rapidly via migratory birds, and that various avian
species may facilitate viral amplification during winter months. The goals of this research were to determine the role of American Tree Sparrows (Spizella americana) in the spread of WNV during their igrations and to determine the role of the Northern Cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis) in winter survivorship and subsequent spring amplification of WNV. Additional wintering avian species were sampled to provide a general survey of the prevalence of WNV in winter in south-central Kansas. Blood samples were taken from the brachial vein of migratory and wintering birds captured using mist nets at four wintering feeding stations at the Wichita State University Field Station. Some samples were taken from retrapped birds within a single winter to determine if winter transmission occurs. Some birds were resampled in consecutive winters to monitor seroconversion rates. Analysis of serum samples were performed, in triplicate, using an epitope-blocking ELISA. The current study was conducted during the consecutive winters of 2003-04 and 2004-05. It was concluded that resident species had an increased incidence of WNV
exposure when compared to that of migratory species. This difference suggests that
migratory species may not have as important a role in the dissemination of WNV as first
hypothesized. Also, minimal, if any, winter transmission occurs on communal feeding
grounds. Viral amplification during the winter was not demonstrated, although one

Le Virus du Nil Occidental (VNO) et le Virus de la Fièvre de la Vallée du Rift (VFVR) sont deux arbovirus transmis par le moustique Culex pipiens comprenant deux biotypes: pipiens et molestus. Au cours de ce projet, nous avons évalué la circulation du VNO au Liban dans des populations de moustiques, des humains, des chevaux et des poulets. Nous avons aussi évalué la compétence vectorielle des populations locales de Cx. pipiens à transmettre le VNO et le VFVR.Des moustiques ont été récoltés et testés pour la présence d’un gène spécifique du VNO. En plus, des sérums humains, de chevaux et de poulets ont été analysés pour rechercher des anticorps spécifiques par ELISA puis confirmés par neutralisation. En outre, des spécimens de Cx. pipiens ont été infectés avec la lignée 1 du VNO ou la souche de VFVR Clone 13. Ensuite, les taux d’infection, de dissémination et de transmission ont été déterminés à différents jours après infection des moustiques. La compétence vectorielle a été comparée entre les différents biotypes.Les résultats entomologiques ont révélé que Cx. pipiens est dominant (87.2%). Tous les moustiques analysés étaient négatifs pour le VNO. Les taux de séroprévalence étaient de 1.01% et 1.98% parmi les humains et les chevaux respectivement. De plus, Cx. pipiens s’est révélé bien plus compétent pour transmettre le VNO que le VFVR. Le biotype molestus est capable de transmettre le VNO plus tôt que celui de pipiens. Cette étude présente des preuves sur une faible circulation du VNO au Liban. Cx. pipiens s’est révélé compétent pour assurer cette transmission. Ainsi, il est essentiel d'établir des programmes de surveillance pour prévenir les éventuelles épidémiesWest Nile virus (WNV) and Rift Valley Fever virus (RVFV) are two emerging arboviruses that have never been reported in Lebanon. They can be transmitted by Culex pipiens mosquito species including two biotypes: pipiens and molestus. During this project, we assessed the circulation of WNV among mosquitoes, human, horse and chicken populations in Lebanon. Moreover, we evaluated, under experimental conditions, the capacity of local Cx. pipiens biotypes to transmit both viruses.Adult mosquitoes were collected, identified and tested to detect WNV RNA. Besides, human, horse and chicken blood samples were collected and screened for WNV antibodies using an in-house ELISA and then confirmed by neutralization assay. Moreover, local Cx. pipiens specimens were experimentally infected with WNV lineage 1 or RVFV Clone 13 strain. The viral infection, dissemination and transmission were then estimated at different days post infection.The vector competence was compared between Cx. pipiens biotypes.Entomological results revealed that 87.2% of collected adult mosquitoes were Cx. pipiens. Screened mosquitoes were negative for WNV. Seroprevalence rates were 1.01% and 1.98% among humans and horses respectively. Besides, local Cx. pipiens were highly competent for WNV transmission and to a lesser extent to RVFV. The molestus biotype was able to transmit WNV earlier than pipiens biotype.The present study provides new evidence of a low circulation of WNV among human and horses in Lebanon. Cx. pipiens is the suspected vector and is experimentally competent to ensure transmission. Therefore, there is a need to establish surveillance program to predict and prevent potential outbreaks

Nous avons aussi évalué la compétence vectorielle des populations locales de Cx. pipiens à transmettre le VNO et le VFVR.Des moustiques ont été récoltés et testés pour la présence d’un gène spécifique du VNO. En plus, des sérums humains, de chevaux et de poulets ont été analysés pour rechercher des anticorps spécifiques par ELISA puis confirmés par neutralisation. En outre, des spécimens de Cx. pipiens ont été infectés avec la lignée 1 du VNO ou la souche de VFVR Clone 13. Ensuite, les taux d’infection, de dissémination et de transmission ont été déterminés à différents jours après infection des moustiques. La compétence vectorielle a été comparée entre les différents biotypes.Les résultats entomologiques ont révélé que Cx. pipiens est dominant (87.2%). Tous les moustiques analysés étaient négatifs pour le VNO. Les taux de séroprévalence étaient de 1.01% et 1.98% parmi les humains et les chevaux respectivement. De plus, Cx. pipiens s’est révélé bien plus compétent pour transmettre le VNO que le VFVR. Le biotype molestus est capable de transmettre le VNO plus tôt que celui de pipiens. Cette étude présente des preuves sur une faible circulation du VNO au Liban. Cx. pipiens s’est révélé compétent pour assurer cette transmission. Ainsi, il est essentiel d'établir des programmes de surveillance pour prévenir les éventuelles épidémiesWest Nile virus (WNV) and Rift Valley Fever virus (RVFV) are two emerging arboviruses that have never been reported in Lebanon. They can be transmitted by Culex pipiens mosquito species including two biotypes: pipiens and molestus. During this project, we assessed the circulation of WNV among mosquitoes, human, horse and chicken populations in Lebanon. Moreover, we evaluated, under experimental conditions, the capacity of local Cx. pipiens biotypes to transmit both viruses.Adult mosquitoes were collected, identified and tested to detect WNV RNA. Besides, human, horse and chicken blood samples were collected and screened for WNV antibodies using an in-house ELISA and then confirmed by neutralization assay. Moreover, local Cx. pipiens specimens were experimentally infected with WNV lineage 1 or RVFV Clone 13 strain. The viral infection, dissemination and transmission were then estimated at different days post infection.The vector competence was compared between Cx. pipiens biotypes.Entomological results revealed that 87.2% of collected adult mosquitoes were Cx. pipiens. Screened mosquitoes were negative for WNV. Seroprevalence rates were 1.01% and 1.98% among humans and horses respectively. Besides, local Cx. pipiens were highly competent for WNV transmission and to a lesser extent to RVFV. The molestus biotype was able to transmit WNV earlier than pipiens biotype.The present study provides new evidence of a low circulation of WNV among human and horses in Lebanon. Cx. pipiens is the suspected vector and is experimentally competent to ensure transmission. Therefore, there is a need to establish surveillance program to predict and prevent potential outbreaks

West Nile Virus (WNV) forms part of the Japanese encephalitis serocomplex in the genus Flavivirus, family Flaviviridae. This enveloped positive single-stranded RNA (+ssRNA ) virus is the etiological agent of West Nile fever, and in more severe cases WNV neuroinvasive disease, in both humans and animals. WNV is distributed worldwide and is phylogenetically classified into five distinct lineages. The WNV genome is ~11 Kb in length and encodes a single open reading frame (ORF) that is post-translationally cleaved into three structural proteins and seven non-structural proteins. In this study, two contemporary and two historic South African WNV strains were genetically characterised as lineage 2 strains based on complete genome sequences. Genetic change as a result of passage number and propagation system was quantified on both the consensus genome- and quasispecies level. A lack of variation was observed amongst the consensus genome sequences of WNV strains subject to changes in propagation system from BHK-21 cell culture to mouse brain and vice versa. In contrast, variation amongst the latter was observed on the quasispecies level. Genome-wide single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) profiles as well as full-length haplotype sequences reconstructed from ultra deep sequence data indicated that high levels of quasispecies diversity persists, particularly in the capsid gene region, during changes in propagation environment. The changes in frequency of variants were consistent throughout isolates propagated in different systems. The increased variation in the capsid gene region may result from selective pressures brought about by differences in host cell type between propagation systems. This study is the first to demonstrate quasispecies dynamics resulting from changes in propagation system of a lineage 2 WNV based on the reconstruction of full-length haplotype sequences from ultra deep sequence data. The approach demonstrates a cost-effective alternative to the estimation of viral population structure in light of viral evolutionary dynamics, which may in turn be assessed by the single plasmid reverse genetic system designed in this study. Although early attempts at rescuing an infectious WNV clone were unsuccessful, the system shows promise in the application of future studies concerning vaccine and diagnostic development, virulence studies and disease control.Dissertation (MSc)--University of Pretoria, 2013.

The aim of this study is to discuss developments in the presentation and singing of hymns from the minimal involvement of late eighteenth century congregations to the full participation expected in the late twentieth century. One source of important musical, social and cultural details illustrating developments in hymnody is found in a range of representative novels. This information is corroborated by other written accounts such as diaries, census material and church records. Early on in the research three handwritten part-books were discovered, dating from 1837 to 1911. This primary source material is vital in the discussion concerning changes in hymn and psalm tunes, and provides substantive evidence that such part-books are forerunners of published hymnbooks. Furthermore a direct link is established between local manuscripts and fictional writing as the provenance of the earliest part-book is traced to the family of novelist Flora Thompson. Further developments in hymnody are seen in the examination of children's hymns. A case study is presented of the flourishing tradition of hymn singing at Bicester Methodist Sunday School. One innovation was the formation of a harmonica band, and detailed notebooks and concert plans reveal the range of the band's sacred and secular programme. A fieldwork survey was conducted to investigate the hymn singing preferences of regular worshippers from five Christian denominations in Bicester. Whilst the responses reveal few differences between the groups, there is compelling evidence that the popularity of certain published hymnbooks has led to a common ownership of hymns, enabling them to be enjoyed both in and out of worship. This study therefore reveals the clear line of development from psalmody to hymnody, from handwritten manuscripts to published hymnbooks. The social context in which both texts and tunes are considered provides a clear illustration of the importance of hymns to the singing population.

Nous avons tout d'abord produit une carte du risque de transmission du VWN aux équidés montrant un risque élevé dans de nombreuses régions, dépendant de facteurs environnementaux : zones humides et climat favorables aux populations d'oiseaux sauvages et de moustiques. Le taux élevé de séroprévalence observé chez les équidés est compatible avec l'hypothèse d'une circulation endémique du VWN sans exclure la possibilité d'introductions répétées.Une étude complémentaire a démontré l'exposition des oiseaux domestiques, péri-domestiques et sauvages au VWN et a permis d'établir un premier inventaire des espèces d'oiseaux les plus exposées, pouvant servir de base à un système de surveillance de l'avifaune sauvage en Tunisie.Le suivi sérologique mensuel de poules sentinelles a permis de détecter la circulation du virus en fin de saison chaude (septembre, octobre) à proximité de zones humides pendant une période de forte activité des moustiques et d‘abondance des oiseaux sauvages. L'occurrence simultanée de cas humains de fièvre West Nile (FWN) laisse penser qu'un système de poules sentinelles serait utile pour une alerte précoce de recrudescence de l'activité du VWN.A l'issue de ce travail, nous proposons des pistes pour un système de surveillance multidisciplinaire de la FWN, adapté au contexte tunisien, et devant permettre la détection précoce de toute circulation viraleOur investigations aimed at clarifying some aspects of the West Nile virus (WNV) epidemiological situation in Tunisia, and in particular at identifying areas at high risk of WNV circulation. A major achievement was the establishment of a risk map for the transmission of WNF in horses. This map shows that the risk of transmission strongly depends on environmental factors: increased risk associated to wetlands proximity and climatic factors favourable to wild birds and mosquitoes. The high seroprevalence observed in horses is compatible with an endemic circulation of WNV without excluding the possibility of repeated introductions.Another study in birds showed the exposure of domestic, wild resident and migratory birds to WNV, and helped establishing an initial inventory of bird species most exposed to WNV. These studies can serve as a basis for a monitoring system of wild birds in Tunisia.A system of monthly follow-up of sentinel chickens detected virus circulation at the end of the hot season (September, October), near wetlands and during a period of high mosquito activity, and abundance of wild birds. The simultaneous occurrence of human cases of WNF brought us to suggest that active surveillance in sentinel chickens would be useful for early warning of increased activity of WNV. This work allows us to propose trails for a WNV multidisciplinary monitoring system adapted to the Tunisian situation, enabling early detection of viral circulation

This thesis challenges the mainstream analyses of hydro-political relations in the Eastern Nile River Basin by providing a more nuanced understanding of the role of power in the management and allocation of water resources. It is argued, in recent years, that the established hegemonic order on the Nile which is underpinned by asymmetric power relations, has been contested through a variety of counter-hegemonic strategies deployed within the Basin. Through an examination of the domestic and international factors which have influenced Ethiopia’s contestation of Egyptian hydro-hegemony, this study provides insights into the processes of counter-hegemony and the options available for non-hegemonic riparians attempting to challenge the consolidated control of water resources in transboundary river basins. Additionally, this approach will help reveal how the positions adopted by the other Eastern Nile riparians – Sudan and Egypt – have changed in response to the contestation of the hydro-hegemonic status quo. Power and hegemony, as conceptualised by International Political Economy and Neo-Gramscian authors, are the essential ideational backbones of the analytical framework which informs this research. In this regard, the Framework of Hydro-Hegemony (Zeitoun and Warner 2006), which asserts that asymmetric power relations represent the cornerstone of the analysis of hydro-political relations, is of particular importance to this study. Building on the work of Warner (2008) and Zeitoun et al. (2011) on critical transboundary hydro-politics, the research expands on the Framework of Counter-Hegemony (Cascão 2009b) by identifying and examining the two-level game (Putnam 1988) being pursued by the EPRDF-led Ethiopian government to contest Egyptian hydro-hegemony on the Nile. The analysis of the domestic and international determinants driving Ethiopian counter-hegemony in the Eastern Nile offers an original contribution to the study of hydro-political relations in the Basin. It also provides new knowledge on the dynamics of domestic water governance in Ethiopia and its relationship to issues of state-building, nationalism and development. Specifically, the study will provide insights on the ongoing construction of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) in western Ethiopia, a ‘game-changing’ hydraulic development in the Eastern Nile Basin.

In 1840, apostle missionaries for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints compiled, printed, and began distributing a hymnbook that eventually would become the basis for all subsequent LDS hymnbooks published in English in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This thesis, as a contribution to the literature of communication, book history, and hymnology, as well as the intellectual and cultural history of the early years of the LDS Church, focuses on analyzing the poetry of the 1840 Mormon Manchester hymnbook. Using qualitative root-metaphor analysis, the author identified and analyzed expressions, supporting an emergent journey root-metaphor. He then divided the expressions into eight categories, each describing important and distinct aspects of the Journey. These categories include the following: 1) the travelers, 2) the activities on the journey, 3) the way, 4) the destination, 5) the guide, 6) the invitation to come, 7) the motivations, and 8) the lost wanderers. This thesis is based on the assumption that cultures and religions can be understood through the stories they tell. The story of the journey as told through the poetry of the 1840 Manchester hymnbook illuminates one aspect of the religious experience of early members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Taken together, the eight aspects of the journey root-metaphor identified in this thesis tell a story about LDS members as travelers on a journey home, who walk on a straight and narrow path, away from a dark and fallen world, through snares, darkness, and other dangers, toward a glorious destination where rest, joy, and other rewards await them. Ultimately the travelers must rise above this world and follow Christ to a place where they may live with God to serve and praise him ever more.

Sudan is the largest country in Africa, but there is poverty and a lack of infrastructure, skills and opportunity despite its substantial natural resources. The capital of Sudan is Khartoum City, located at the confluence of the Blue and White Nile Rivers. Unfortunately development on Nile River Front is limited due to the risk of flooding and erosion. There is a danger that rapid economic development may take place in this unique area without sustainable development planning. This research project aims to develop strategies to protect the Nile River banks by suitable stabilization methods so that development can take place safely. Data has been collected about hydrology, morphology, geotechnical factors, soil classifications, river pattern systems, driving forces, and the main problems restricting sustainable development and engineering works for the Nile River. In addition the following have been reviewed: historical background, existing land uses, current environmental situations, and the economic and social conditions of the study areas. Research identified Cairo, Egypt as a similar case study, where data collected by the author included historical background, current situations, strategic visions and development plan for Nile River Shores. Further information was collected about sustainable development from a general literature review. From these collected data a set of guidelines and indicators for sustainable development was established related to environmental, economic and social factors. Based on those guidelines and indicators, methods of stabilization of the banks for each shore were specified and a proposed development plan was established. Methods of stabilization of banks and the development plan were refined and evaluated to establish a final version of the development plan: Sustainable Development of the Nile River Front (SDNRF) at Greater Khartoum. From refinement and evaluations, barriers and constraints for implementation were specified with their suggested solutions. Finally, conclusions and recommendations related to the SDNRF Manual about development and regulations were established.

An assay based on Nile red fluorescence was developed for quantitative analysis of triglycerides, a common cellular component with important biological functions and is routinely analyzed for diagnosis of metabolic disorders and as an important feedstock of food industry and biodiesel production. Based on studies on the Nile red fluorescence of pure, binary, and ternary systems of triglycerides, ethanol, and water, 20% ethanol aqueous solution was determined to be the most suitable solvent for lipid fluorescence measurement. Excellent linearity was established for lipid samples in the range of 0.1- 0.5 mg/ml with several different lipid standards and vegetable oils. Results also suggest that the fluorescence of triglycerides was not sensitive to the fatty acid composition of lipids. This finding is important since it implies that the assay could potentially be used for the measurement of triglyceride content of different oil crops without causing significant variations. The results of this method were then verified by comparing with the results of the conventional gravimetric methods. The results of the fluorescence assay were consistently lower than that of the gravimetric method by approximately 10%. This phenomenon was tentatively attributed to the fact that the gravimetric method measures the total amount of lipophilic materials in samples while the fluorescence assay is selective to glycerides. Attempts were also made to apply this assay to estimate the lipid content of green alga Neochloris oleoabundans. However, the results were less than ideal due to the existence of interfering components in the extract of microalga samples that could significantly repress the fluorescence of lipids.

Lack of affordable feeds is one of the major constraints facing small-scale fish farmers in Tanzania. This study evaluated the suitability of moringa leaf meal (MLM), cassava leaf meal (CLM) and cassava root meal (CRM) as novel ingredients in Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus diets. Each of the ingredients was processed in an attempt to remove the most significant antinutritional factor. A series of five experiments was conducted in a recirculation system using juvenile O. niloticus. The fish were fed isonitrogenous (30g 100g-1), isolipidic (10g 100g-1) and isoenergetic (18 kJ g-1) diets containing graded levels of the processed ingredients to their apparent appetite but not exceeding 10% of their body weight for a period of 8 weeks. Processing led to the removal of 0.3% of saponin from MLM and 60% and 90% of hydrogen cyanide from CLM and CRM respectively. The contents of other inherent antinutritional factors such as phenols, tannins and phytic acid were little affected. Processed MLM, CLM and CRM had 31.1/29.0/1.5g 100g-1 of crude protein, 5.9/10.2/2.4g 100g-1 of crude fibre and 20.1/19.7/15.8k Jg-1 of gross energy. The content of sulphur amino acids was higher in CLM (0.47%) than in MLM (0.23%). Digestibe protein and digestible energy was higher in MLM (25.71g 100g-1/15.44kJ g-1) than in CLM (12.71g 100-1/9.16kJ g-1). CRM had a digestible energy content of 13.5kJ g-1. Inclusion of either of the leaf meals, even at the lowest level of 15g 100g-1 of total dietary protein, led to a significant reduction in feed intake, growth and feed utilisation. Liver and small intestine did not show any histopathological changes which could be linked to dietary treatment. Conversely, cassava root meal could replace up to 75% of wheat meal in the diet without significantly affecting performance. The performance of leaf meals was marginally improved by a combination of blending and feeding stimulants, whereby a blend containing 1 part MLM and 2 parts CLM could provide up to 20g 100g-1 of dietary protein without significantly reducing performance. Biological and economic performance of practical diets containing 30-50g 100g-1 of dietary protein from moringa and cassava blends (LMB) with feeding stimulants was significantly lower than a fishmeal-meal based diet (FM) but comparable to a soybean meal-based diet (SBM). The suitability of MLM and CLM as novel protein sources in O. niloticus diets will depend on 1) improving reduction/removal of inherent antinutritional factors in MLM and CLM as well as improving digestibility of CLM. On the other hand, the suitability of CRM as a carbohydrate energy source will depend on the availability of cost effective protein sources due to its low protein content.
