Streszczenie:
Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) is a class of diseases that involve disorders of heart and blood vessels, including hypertension, coronary heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, peripheral vascular disease, which finally lead to Heart Failure (HF). There are several treatments available all over the world, but still, CVD and heart failure became the number one problem causing death every year worldwide. Both experimental and clinical studies have shown a role for inflammation in the pathogenesis of heart failure. This seems related to an imbalance between pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines. Cardiac inflammation is a major pathophysiological mechanism operating in the failing heart, regardless of HF aetiology. Disturbances of the cellular and humoral immune system are frequently observed in heart failure. This review describes how B-cells play a specific role in the heart failure states. There is an urgent need to identify novel therapeutic targets and develop advanced therapeutic strategies to combat the syndrome of HF. Understanding and describing the elements of the humoral immunity function are essential and may suggest potential new treatment strategies.

Streszczenie:
For many years immune response in leprosy has been studied. Since 1960 several reports dealing with humoral immunity have been described in the literature. Different autoantibody rates occur in leprosy. There is an increase in the prevalence of autoantibodies in elderly patients with long standing disease, in lepromatous leprosy and in those with reactional states. The diferences in rates among various studies are attributed to different methods and variations among patient samples concerning age, gender, polar forms, therapy and other elements. The prevalence of numerous antibodies, immune complexes, cryoglobulins and complement levels have been studied by many authors. This also highlights the importance of the more recent reviews of anti-Mycobacterium leprae glycolipid antibodies such as the anti-phenolic glycolipid-I antibodies in which titers are variable and depend on genetic factors.

Streszczenie:

Background: Adenotonsillectomy is one of the commonest surgical procedures performed by the otolaryngologists. The immunological effects of adenotonsillectomy have not been studied extensively. Some researchers have found decreased immunoglobulin levels after adenotonsillectomy while others have not reported any significant changes. The present study aimed to evaluate the changes in humoral immunity in patients undergoing adenotonsillectomy before and after surgery as measured by serum immunoglobulin levels.

Methods: The study designed was a prospective observational case-control study conducted at Yenepoya Medical College Hospital, a tertiary referral hospital, Mangalore, Karnataka. A total of 25 patients in the age range 5-15years who underwent adenotonsillectomy for chronic adenotonsillitis and 25 age and sex matched controls participated in the study. Serum immunoglobulin G, A and M (IgG, IgA and IgM) levels were estimated 24 hours prior and 4 weeks after adenotonsillectomy. The statistical analysis used was non-parametric tests.

Results: Serum levels of IgG, A and M were found to be significantly higher in patients with chronic adenotonsillitis. The levels of all the three immunoglobulins decreased to normal one month post-operatively.

Conclusions: Removal of infected tissue and chronic antigenic stimulation resulted in restoration of serum immunoglobulin levels to normal. While chronic adenotonsillitis contributed to changes in humoral immunity as reflected by higher serum immunoglobulin levels, adenotonsillectomy enabled restoration of the immunoglobulin levels to normal.

Streszczenie:
Tonsils are one of the important secondary lymphoid organ in immune system. It remains controversial whether tonsillectomy results in decreased serum immunoglobulin level. The purpose of this study was to observe the effect of tonsillectomy on humoral immunity parameters among the patients with tonsillar disease. Total group A 70 patients up to the age of 18 years, who were enrolled for tonsillectomy and 30 age matched children group B were included for comparative study. Serum IgG, IgM and IgA levels were measured in all 70 patients before tonsillectomy and in 56 patients who came for 1st follow-up after one month and 30 patients who came for 2nd follow up after three months of tonsillectomy. Serum IgG, IgM and IgA levels were also measured in group B children. Serum IgG, IgM and IgA levels in patients of group A did not show any significant difference in comparison to group B. One month after tonsillectomy the level of IgG was slightly decreased and IgM and IgA were increased compared to preoperative value but not statistically significant. All IgG, IgM and IgA were also not significantly altered in comparison to group B. Three months after tonsillectomy serum IgG, IgM and IgA level were found decreased in comparison to pre operative value and group B, among which difference of only IgG was significant. After tonsillectomy humoral parameters were found reduced but overall impact on humoral immune status was not significantly altered.
