This study from the late nineteenth century to right before the outbreak of the Civil War aims to analyse the relationship between Barcelonese society and the musical performances they attended. It must be borne in mind that this is a particularly turbulent period marked by the reconsideration of existing ideas and values. Not only did these changes have a deep impact on the day-to-day life of Barcelonese society, but they also paved the way for the emergence of new leisure and entertainment venues which hosted shows more in line with a new way of thinking and living, and which met the musical, and more generally, the artistic demand of society. And all under the influence of new artistic trends determined by Paris. Musical styles changed because ground-breaking harmonies from the New World amalgamated in Europe, thus reshaping existing musical aesthetics. This study attempts to prove that this disruptive wave in the social and musical scene eventually interacted and merged with existing artistic models, resulting in a new musical conception, without putting aside what is considered ‘classic’.

Doctoral thesis, Universitat Rovira i Virgili, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/386401.
Frequently, the term world music is associated with the marketing of the difference because it offers the possibility of promoting, mainly in Europe and the USA, music and musicians from non-Western countries. Usually, in world music’s market, the non-western music adopts Western commercial music patterns. This process promotes the fixation of musical genres and socio-musical practices and, at the same time, denies the experimentation and innovation. The contemporary context characterized by globalization and the intensity of the circulation of cultural flows, is perfect for the world music. Issues relating to the questions about global-local, modernity, hybridization and multiculturalism, etc., also they affect the world music because music includes musical and extra-musical practices. The music has the ability to build and to express, at the same time, different imaginaries and narratives. Music is an excellent tool of communication. Music understood in this sense, contacted different actors (musicians, audience, music producers, etc.) which articulate a musical scene. In this case, the world music has connected musicians and music from the Mediterranean area, historically characterized by encounters of different intensity between different cultures and peoples, as well as many more agents. All they have articulated a musical scene where unequal power relations are reflected and, at the same time, this musical scene is a direct testimony of different narratives about identity, intercultural processes and hybridization.

Pełny tekst źródłaTwenty first century School urgently needs profound transformations that allow teachers to adapt the school to the needs that our students and the society in general are claiming. Musical education is now using models that have nothing to do with the ways of doing music that we can find outside of the school. The new technological revolution applied to the field of music has allowed other ways of doing music to strongly emerge that collectively offer a new cartography of musical learning in all its dimensions. It is for that reason that this study, through an ethnographic methodology, focuses on the collaborative practices in music creation occurring in informal contexts and that are developed by musicians without formal musical training. The results of this study show some guidelines that have to be taken into account in order to transform and to adapt the musical practices in our classrooms towards more permeable contexts between school and society by encouraging and fostering collaborative and creative musical learning.

This thesis is based on an approach to music through visual arts, more specifically through painting. It works at different educational stages in order to integrate pedagogically both areas, music and painting, through active practice with appropriate educational resources; therefore, it is an interdisciplinary research between Music History and Art History. Starting from the state of affairs and the initial hypothesis, the first part of the investigation provides examples of the relationship between music and painting based on musical instruments, on universal themes and also on composers and painters that are prominent in classicism, romanticism and avant-garde twentieth century. The second part of the thesis introduces the pedagogical work that has been elaborated, for instance the activity "The art in the research: let us work with Art and educate for Peace". This work includes the preparation and implementation of a concert in the Modern Art Museum of Tarragona (MAMT) lead by students of an institute, in which the students performed musical works created by them, works that were related to the artworks of the museum. In this part it is also introduced the work that has been done in different educational contexts concerning the understanding of music in relation to painting from the classical and romantic music to the twentieth century avant-garde, and also the pedagogical application of the content covered in chapters II, III and IV. In its conclusions, this research provides the assessment done by students and teachers of the teaching-learning proposal. It is considered important that during the respective academic courses the students achieve the knowledge and the appreciation of works of art related to the different musical styles of the history of Western music.

Pełny tekst źródłaThis doctoral thesis aims to contribute to the theoretical-methodological study of the singable translation of songs of a subtype, balanced between both its literary and musical values, such as those of David Bowie. The thesis adapts translatological principles, both general (continuum between translation and adaptation; functionalism on three levels; descriptivism with reference to the original) and text type specific (poetic translation; prevalence of musical rhythm; logocentrism vs. musico-centrism; pragmatism; and acceptability with regards to musical-textual fit, which is the special focus of this thesis). Eleven original songs and fourteen cover versions are analyzed (structure; literary and musical features). As a result, an open classification of musical, accentual, and poetical adjustment resources is taken into consideration, and stylistic, semantic shifts and general translatological approaches are demonstrated. In conclusion, despite the inevitable alterations to the original values, the singable translation facilitates a direct, synchronous comprehension and enjoyment of them, and access to the originals.
