Streszczenie:
It is now widely accepted that it is important to understand the ‘human dimensions’ of wildlife management issues in order to achieve management goals. This growing field of study was born in the 1960s and involves an examination of societal values, knowledge and behaviours associated with wildlife and wildlife management issues. This paper provides an overview of the history and directions in human dimensions research, focusing specifically on its application for wildlife population management in Australasia (in particular, Australia and New Zealand). It also provides a ‘toolkit’ of methods and approaches for those wishing to undertake, interpret or utilise human dimensions enquiries.

AbstractArchaeological investigations formed part of the conservation work of Project Blizzard in 1985–86 at the site of Mawson's Australasian Antarctic Expedition (1911–14) huts, Cape Denison, Commonwealth Bay. The extent and nature of the archaeological resources are described, and the results of excavations inside the main hut in 1985 are summarized. Excavation stratigraphy is interpreted in the light of the documented post-abandonment history of the site, and used to measure the extent to which human activity inside the hut may be contributing to its deterioration.

Streszczenie:
AbstractThe Human Genetics Society of Australasia is a vibrant professional society with more than 900 members that promotes and regulates the practice of human and medical genetics in Australia and New Zealand. The growth of human genetics was stimulated by the development of diagnostic clinical cytogenetics laboratories in the early to mid 1960s. This coincided with the recognition by medical specialists, mainly pediatricians, that genetic disorders, especially inborn errors of metabolism and birth defects, were of clinical interest and potentially challenging areas for their skills. The organization of professionals in human genetics was slow to evolve. There was an early Western Australian Human Genetics Society, and the cytogenetics community had begun to meet annually from about 1966 but was coordinated by a mailing list rather than as a formal organization. In 1976, as part of the celebrations of the Centenary Year of the Adelaide Children's Hospital, a clinical genetics meeting involving several high profile international speakers and most of the senior medical geneticists in Australia and New Zealand along with the annual meeting of the loose-knit cytogeneticists group agreed that a small working group be charged with setting up a Human Genetics Society. The society was formally incorporated in South Australia in 1977.

The intersection of numerous global megatrends is driving the emergence of significantly more complex biosecurity challenges in Australasia. Additional legislative and management frameworks, coupled with dedicated funding sources, will be required to protect the region’s native biodiversity and the human activities that depend on it. This review explores how more comprehensive biosecurity initiatives might be implemented through the adoption of robust pre-border and border quarantine practices, the use of emerging technologies to improve border and post-border biosurveillance and monitoring, and the integration of multiple social, economic and ecological objectives into a more holistic management paradigm. This review also discusses the need for a multidisciplinary approach to biosecurity, driven by improved co-operation across government agencies, industry, community and scientific stakeholders, in order to safeguard the unique biological heritage of the Australasia region.

Streszczenie:
Human genetics spans every facet of biology from molecular science, through laboratory and clinical practice, to psychology and anthropology. In each of these areas, the history of human genetics has been punctuated by paradigm shifts in knowledge. Each such new concept has been received with skepticism, often with perplexity, and sometimes with frank incredulity. Such comprise the datum milestones along the path leading to our present corpus of genetic knowledge. In parallel to the personal threats to Copernicus and Galileo in the field of astronomy in the 17th century, almost all genetic discoveries of the 19th and 20th centuries were seen as challenges to the received wisdom, and sometimes the social order, of their time and place. Researchers, scientists and clinicians encountering such new and often-heretical paradigm shifts have required considerable resolve to promote and publish their work. Just as in the field of astronomy, new directions in genetics have threatened not only the reputations and sometimes the careers of scientists, but also have been challenges to fundamental religious and sociological beliefs in society more broadly. Examples followed the discovery of biological sexual dimorphism (in plants as well as animals) by Nehemiah Grew (1641–1712). Darwinian evolution, Mendel's First and Second Laws, the existence of mitochondrial genes, apoptosis and its genetic basis, and uniparental disomy are more recent examples. Many of these new revelations, which today have led to the current understanding of fundamental biology, were discovered by individuals working in relative isolation. To promote and publish findings that fundamentally challenge received wisdom continues to require considerable resolve, if not courage. Herein lies a message for all clinicians and researchers.

Streszczenie:
Developmental constraints influence individual energetic apportionment between growth, maintenance and reproduction with long-term implications for health and longevity. Such life-history trade-offs are hypothesised to explain the observed variability of human male and female reproductive steroid levels. Salivary testosterone (salT), anthropometric, and demographic data were collected from: 1) sedentees in Sylhet, Bangladesh (n=107; aged 20-78 years, mean 39); 2) Bangladeshi born men who migrated to London as adults aged ≥18 (n=61; aged 23-76, mean 49); 3) Bangladeshi born men who migrated to London as youths <18 (n=50; aged 18-69, mean 32); 4) British born Bengalis (n=48; aged 18-42, mean 25); and Londoners of white British or other white European parentage from 5) similar socioeconomic background compared to migrant groups (n=58; aged 18-75, mean 41); and 6) higher status socioeconomic background compared to migrant groups (n=30; aged 22-54, mean 37). SalT and somatic markers of adult Bengalis is dependent upon the age at which they migrated from Bangladesh to the UK and suggests differences in male reproductive phenotype, health behaviours and diet due to changes in ecological conditions during development. These findings contribute to the growing body of evidence that salT, stature and apportionment of skeletal muscle vary in accordance with early life conditions and the strategic allocation of reproductive effort in the human male, with a corresponding increase in early symptoms of adult onset disease of the prostate and glucose metabolism, and low socioeconomic status (SES). Predicted blunting of diurnal salT profile in adult migrants was inconclusive. Contrary to the predictions of this study, Bengali men do not have lower salT in relation to reproductive status of paternity or marriage, while older British-born European men of low SES have higher salT in relation to number of offspring and marital status. British-born Bengalis and migrants who arrived as children under the age 12 years were revealed to be of significantly higher SES than migrants who arrived in London after the age 18, possibly reflecting a generational shift away from historical conditions of poverty within the London Bengali community.

Streszczenie:
This dissertation provides a comprehensive and systematic examination of anthropoid primate milk composition and its relationship to a species' evolutionary history, ecological context, and life history strategy. Milk samples from 14 species of anthropoid primate (Alouatta paliatta, Callithrix jacchus, Cebus apella, Gorilla beringei beringei, Gorilla gorilla gorilla, Hylobates lar, Leontopithecus rosalia, Macaca mulatta, Macaca sinica, Pan paniscus, Pan troglodytes, Pongo pygmaeus, Saimiri boliviensis boliviensis, and Symphalangus syndactylus) were analyzed for proximate composition (fat, protein, lactose, dry matter, and minerals) and milk fatty acid composition. The objectives of this study were identification of primitive features in anthropoid milks, shared-derived features of anthropoid families or superfamilies, and unique-derived features of species, including Homo sapiens. Results did not support the null hypothesis of a generalized anthropoid milk composition. Variation among anthropoids in milk fatty acid profiles and proximate milk composition was influenced by phylogeny and the life history strategy of the species, as well as the diet and environment (captive or wild living) of the mother.Maternal diet had a direct influence on fatty acid profiles and created distinct groupings of wild and captive living individuals. Phylogenetic patterns were identified within captive and wild groups, particularly a distinction between milk fatty acid profiles of hominoids (including humans) and monkeys.Significant variation in proximate milk composition was identified at the level of the superfamily. Cercopithecoid milk was highest in mean fat, dry matter, the proportion of energy from fat, and total gross energy. Ceboid milk was highest in mean protein and the proportion of energy from protein. Hominoid milks were lowest in mean fat, protein, dry matter, the proportion of energy from fat, and total gross energy.Hominoid milk also was lowest in the degree of plasticity in milk composition. Milk of captive living monkeys was higher than milk of wild living monkeys in mean fat, percent energy from fat, and total gross energy. Milk fat and energy also were highly variable within captive living monkeys. In contrast, fat and total gross energy were not significantly different between captive and wild living hominoids and were less variabile among captive living hominoids as compared to monkeys. The lack of variability and the relatively low energy values in hominoid milk suggest that it may be buffered against environmental fluctations. Larger body size and a longer duration of lactation may permit hominoids, including humans, to decouple maternal condition from milk energy and instead relying on energy storage.

Streszczenie:
Assessment and reporting (A/R) initiatives such as State of the Environment Reporting, State of the Protected Area Reporting and Management Effectiveness Assessment provide protected area managers and their clients with tools and knowledge to better understand complex human-ecological relationships, and support efforts to achieve more sustainable living. This research reports on the findings of a global survey of 62 A/R initiatives in 19 countries and a corresponding analysis of the application of the ecosystem approach in these initiatives. An organisational culture that supports evaluation and participation is an important ingredient for effective A/R. Survey respondents believe that participatory approaches yield many benefits despite greater complexity of the process and expenditure of time and resources. Benefits include: realising positive conservation outcomes; helping to enrich the organisation’s technical capacity through the contributions of others; improving the accuracy, completeness, acceptance and use of information; and enhancing organisational transparency, cooperation and the capacity of the participants. On average, the A/Rs examined achieve a moderate to high degree of success in implementing the ecosystem approach through their A/Rs, as determined through a proposed composite index to assess application of the ecosystem approach. An integrated planning and assessment model and a priority setting procedure were developed to simplify and improve requirements for protected area A/R while ensuring technical rigor. The results and lessons from field testing elements of the integrated model in four Egyptian National Parks are presented. Overall, the research suggests it is possible to integrate sophisticated management tools and achieve effective and efficient processes for performance assessment in protected areas.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
The thesis explores the relationship between late Neolithic knappers and flint resources at the settlement of Rocca di Rivoli (Verona, Italy), a key site for the understanding of the late Neolithic in northern Italy. Approximately 8000 flint artefacts were recorded by means of an attribute-based relational database and subsequently analysed. The use of the \(chaîne\) \(opératoire\) method, combined with a social agency approach, provided a useful framework within which to discuss topics such as tradition, style and specialization in the context of the late Neolithic of northern Italy. The intrinsic nature of the site, characterized by secondary deposition in pits, challenged the potential retrieval of data and subsequent interpretation and resulted in the identification of fragmented \(chaînes\) \(opératoires\). In addition, the poor conservation of the finds and bias in accessibility procedures to the collection limited the choice of analytical methods available. Nonetheless, significant results were obtained. At Rocca di Rivoli there were clear preferences in terms of raw material: flint coming from the Maiolica outcrops was by far the preferred variety to be working with. It is suggested that raw material procurement possibly took place in different ways, but that a more precise identification in terms of its organization is not possible at this stage. The 16 \(chaînes\) \(opératoires\) identified at Rocca di Rivoli represent basic frameworks allowing for endless variations and additions taking place during the unfolding of flint knapping activity. It is argued throughout the present work that knapping was undertaken by both expert and non-expert knappers, including apprentices. Some aspects characterising the practice of flint knapping changed throughout occupation of the sire, possibly pointing at changes in social dynamics affecting the community of Rocca di Rivoli.

Streszczenie:
This chapter places evolutionary demography in the history of population thought, and more particularly in relations between demography and evolutionary population biology. Darwin conceived evolution as a dynamics of variation arising from the behaviour of populations at intra- and inter-species levels. While Malthus’s principle of population was an important early stimulus, Darwin resolved the core problem in evolution -- how mechanisms of variation combine to produce divergence of character -- by analogy to Smith’s account of the division of labour. With the benefit of hindsight, we can describe Darwinian population thinking as the first general methodology in which it became possible to combine bottom-up observation including enumeration of local population dynamics with top-down statistical methods. The two components entail different concepts of population, which may be characterised broadly as ‘open’ and ‘closed’. Their combination shows that evolutionary theory is rooted in the same sources of population thinking that gave rise to demography: the former lie in Classical population thinking and early modern population arithmetics, and the latter in 19th-century statistics and probability. Hereditary influences remained a ‘black box’ in Darwin’s theory, which only began to be unpacked with the rediscovery of Mendel’s research. The second half of the chapter traces the central role which demographic methods played in topical and analytical developments of the first half of the 20th century, including both the formulation and critique of eugenics, the emergence of population ecology, and the rise of the mathematical theory of population genetics. There is an irony here: even as demographic methods came to play an integral role, mainstream demographers became less and less involved. The ‘separatism’ of demography and evolutionary biology often remarked in the post-war era thus has deeper roots. These lie partly in topical issues, like reactions against eugenics, but more importantly in a conceptual shift in how we understand relationships between ultimate and proximate mechanisms of population change, and its implications for analysis and modelling. Evolutionary theory entails a balance of methods and insights drawing on both population concepts, which demography has not yet achieved. The concluding section provides examples of how current evolutionary demography is now integrating these developments into demographic explanation.

Streszczenie:
AbstractIn recent years, there has been a renewed interest in anarchism from both social movements and critical academic circles. When tracing the genealogy of anarchist perspectives since the nineteenth century, radical geographers have pointed out the importance of the anarchist movement in Spain, and particularly in the city of Barcelona. During the 1960s and 1970s, authors like Murray Bookchin shared an interest in social ecology with a militant passion to vindicate the historical significance of Spanish anarchism and the achievements of anarcho-syndicalist collectives in the 1936 revolution. Before interest in these perspectives faded among critical geographers in the 1980s and 1990s, the experience of the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939) was key to the research on the relation between social anarchism and the environment. In the context of the emergence of political ecology and environmental history in Spain during the 1990s, I examine the scholarship on human ecology and Iberian anarchism, first developed by Eduard Masjuan in the journal Ecología Política. Masjuan’s doctoral research, supervised by Joan Martínez-Alier, delved into the rich debates on urbanism and birth control that took place in anarchist circles from Catalonia to Latin America between 1860 and 1937. Masjuan’s research constitutes an essential reference to explore the depth of the environmental dimensions of Spanish anarchism during these years and has informed degrowth discussions on population and the collective ethics of self-limitation. Despite the impact of Masjuan’s research, I argue that the environmental history and political ecology of the 1936 revolution is still to be written. I show some examples of work to date, from urban water management under anarcho-syndicalist principles to collectivised urban agriculture. Finally, I point out that, while not always acknowledged, the influence of anarchist practices can also be found in the research on today’s social movements carried out at the Barcelona school of political ecology and ecological economics.

In this chapter I explore the influence of the local ecology, also known as contextual or area effects, on two focal demographic outcomes, fertility and mortality. I start by outlining why ecological effects have been of interest to evolutionary scholars, provide a brief overview of life history theory as a theoretical framework and the type of data from traditional, small-scale populations that have been used to test predictions. Key evolutionary concepts such as extrinsic mortality risk and phenotypic plasticity are explained. I then compare and contrast this perspective to how contextual effects have been tackled by non-evolutionary scholars within demography and related disciplines, drawing on studies mainly from high-income contexts based on broad population register data. In the final part of the chapter I lay out some challenges for this research area, which include addressing selection biases and attaining a greater understanding of underlying causal mechanisms. Future research is likely to be more fruitful if evolutionary and non-evolutionary lines of enquiry become increasingly integrated.

The article presents the characteristic of the systematic composition and diversity of skeletal remains of mammals in the third level of human habitation of the Paleolithic site in the cave of Brânzeni I, Edinet district. The archaeological and paleontological remains discovered here are attributed to a new archaeological culture for Europe – Brânzeni. The inhabitants of this site hunted horses, reindeer, bison, deer, rhino, mammoth, hares, marmot and other mammals, that met in thesite area and were the main source of food for tribal members. The bones of small animal species (insectivores, rodents etc.) discovered in the inhabiting level of the Palaeolithic site originated from the decomposition of predatory bird pellets and of the feces of carnivores living in the cave while it was temporarily abandoned by the Paleolithic hunters. The archaeological and paleontological materials presented in this information are of interest for the knowledge of the peculiarities of geological history, fauna of paleogeography and the human society of the given area, have instructive, cognitive and ecotouristic value.

According to the Bronfenbrenner's ecological systems theory of human development ([1][2][3][4][5]), the development of each individual cannot be observed without considering its relationship with the development of other people and, above all, with the environment in which they live. The ecological orientation of Bronfenbrenner with respect to human development is therefore based on the interest in the progressive adaptation between an active organism that grows and its immediate environment: the individual-environment interaction that is determined by the relationships existing between the different environmental situations and the individuals present in that context is fundamental. Consequently, the ecological environment that is considered relevant to development processes is not limited to a single environmental situation but includes the interconnections between multiple environmental situations and the different influences of each individual. The evolution of the Internet-based technologies has brought to the development of solutions that have profoundly changed the way we live, including education. The advent of social media and social networks represents a milestone in the history of Internet, opening up to profound reflections on the "virtualization" of relationships, their growing importance in everyday life, and their role in education. Many authors argue that the Internet and the social media should no longer be considered as a tool to connect to a virtual reality that is separate from the real world, but as a place in which users live daily ([6][9][11][10]); consequently, they constitute one of the environmental situations mentioned by Bronfenbrenner. However, the risks deriving from the use of social media have been widely discusses in the literature ([7][8][12]). Adolescents are more exposed to the social media threats, since they are unable to perceive the profoundly different dynamics that govern offline and online networks. In this paper, having in mind the Bronfenbrenner's ecological systems theory of human development, we argue that the progressive adaptation of students to social media should be considered as a process of their growth and development. Furthermore, we analyze some corrections to be introduced in the educational paths of adolescents necessary to reduce the threats deriving from the use of social media and social networks in education. Streszczenie:
The intangible cultural heritage, as the cultural treasure, inherits the Chinese unique spiritual and cultural connotation and has a wide mass base and an affinity that suits the needs of the Chinese people. The folk paper-cut art is one of the Chinese traditional folk arts. Some kinds of the paper-cut arts have been incorporated in the list of intangible cultural heritage and imply wisdom and sincere emotions deposited by the Chinese nation for thousands of years. The Zhuanqiao paper-cut is analyzed in the paper. The Zhuanqiao folk paper-cut art originated from the beginning of Ming dynasty runs a long history with focus on theme expansion and pursuit of the spirit of the times, forming a series of works such as Jiangnan Watertown, Town Feature and Natural Ecology. The art is the featured brands of Zhuanqiao paper-cut full of local flavor and modernity and has become one of the representatives of Shanghai paper-cut. Currently, people are facing a world of extreme abundance in substance and information. Lots of designs have transitioned from pure Configuration Discussion to Emotion Discussion, while the emotionalized design has become one of the relatively common design philosophies in modern design. The emotionalized design is interpreted as the design featured by emotion and is a kind of concept originated from design psychology. In the current society, people are no longer content with functions and values brought by design itself, but start to pay attention to emotions endowed in design works. People’s demands can become the start point for design, while their emotions can also do. At present, China is increasingly focusing on intangible cultural heritage, and is constantly intensifying the protection and spreading thereof. The design of derivatives of intangible cultural heritage is one of the vital means to develop and inherit the intangible cultural heritage. The design of the derivatives enriches the pattern of manifestation of paper-cut, and makes it possible not to be limited to original manifestation state but to have more spreading forms. The strong emotions revealed in rich forms and various uses of paper-cut art have to be learned in the present emotionalized design of derivatives of intangible cultural heritage. Research methods such as bibliographic retrieval and field interview are used in the paper. On one hand, such methods are used to collect data relating the Zhuanqiao paper-cut so as to understand the developing history, artistic features and cultural connotations, and on the other hand, to collect and analyze the design of derivatives of current Zhuanqiao paper-cut with the aim to understand the application state in design of derivatives of intangible cultural heritage. In this paper, the sustainable developing trend is needed to be explored to provide the development and inheritance of the Zhuanqiao paper-cut with a kind of emotional expression way endowed with fickleness of human nature.

The steadily increasing landscape fragmentation and the reduction of permeability for wildlife are among the most negative impacts of human activity on the environment. In terms of education, theseproblems appear to be rather demanding, withthe difficulty corresponding tosecondary school standards. Considering the multiple interdisciplinary connections, the entire process cannot be sufficiently understood without a relevant amount of preliminary knowledge. Such a corpus of information is acquired especially through biology/ecology, geographyand history classes, but links to other subjects can be found too. The paper presents didactic methods facilitating the actual presentation of the theme to pupils/students; in this context, the authors discuss the possibilities of integrating the given problems into applicable schoolsubjects andoutline the risks arising from the proposed modification and/ or expansion of the teaching procedures. Also the links to data and supporting methodological materials are included that will allow the teacher to obtain enough information on the topicsto comprehend all the aspects and complexities of the innovated classes. In the corresponding sections, the papercharacterizes individual topics to be combined with selected teaching methods, especially as regards worksheets, project-oriented education, anda case study relating to afield trip targeting one of the areas of high importance for wildlife migration in the Czech Republic.

Streszczenie:
The paper introduces the Błędowska Desert—a site at the edge of Europe that testifies to evidence of medieval environmental disruption, human-initiated ecological disaster & persistent desertification. It then presents a condensed historical genealogy of experimental “desert-based” arts & architecture pedagogies which feature educational models aimed at immersion within and sensitivity to desert landscapes; and proceeds to detail and critically appraise the contemporary activities & activism of The Arts of Ecology program, an ongoing interdisciplinary project in the EU that intersects disparate researchers from across the arts, humanities, and sciences within the context of a Special Habitat Conservation Area in central Poland. Through investigationof the workshops, performances, installations, and classes conducted on-site, the paper catalogs the numerousmeans by which contemporary educators are using the arts in Błędowska to re-trace the history of environmental degradation and re-consider the ongoing environmental conservation efforts of this anthropogenic desert. Linking these pedagogical efforts with a constellation of geological, technological & infrastructural trajectories as well as a host of political tensions, ultimately, the research is inscribed within a broader discourse on the concept of disaster. The paper argues that the Błędowska Desert serves not as a model for a return to the fiction of a pristine, untouched wilderness, but instead offers an opportunity to collectively consider the fragile realities of ecosystems, social structures, and built environments alike. In conclusion, the paper asks how the view from the anomalous, anthropogenic desert of Błędowska—and the actions of its arts and activist community—can provide critical and creative lessons for how to adapt, with solidarity, agility, and resilience, in the face of the 21st century’s impending emergency of climate dysregulation and global desertification. Might reconsidering buildings & cities in relation to other historical environmental disasters through new modes of contemporary arts & architecture education make space for imagining new visions & possibilities for the future of built & natural environments.
