Background: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a complex disease that is optimally managed with specialized care. Data on HS specialty clinics (HSSCs) are lacking. Methods: HSSCs in the USA were identified on the HS Foundation website and analyzed for geographic location and clinic director demographics. Results: We identified 29 HSSCs in 16 states, an increase from 22 in 2019. Thirty-four states currently lack a HSSC; the Mountain West and East South Central regions of the USA are particularly affected. Among HSSC directors, the majority (93.3%) are dermatologists, with slightly more women (53.3%) than men (46.7%). Most (86.7%) have an academic affiliation, and the majority (60%) graduated from residency <10 years ago. All directors are involved in research, and over half of HSSCs serve as HS clinical trial sites. Conclusions: The number of HSSCs in the USA has been growing, yet there remains a dearth in certain regions. Given that HS is a disease with high unmet need and a rapidly evolving therapeutic landscape, we encourage the establishment of more HSSCs to improve access to specialized care.

A review of recent research on mechanical performance of high strength structural steel (HSSS) in the level of both materials and members is presented, including the static material performance, toughness and mechanical property under cyclic loadings of HSSS, buckling and hysteretic behavior of high strength steel columns (HSSC), the ductility and resistance of bolted connection with high strength steel slices etc. Previous research work shows that the application of high strength steel (HSS) is limited in seismic zone .Finally, two design methods of using HSS in seismic zone are proposed based on current seismic design philosophy.

Human skeletal stem cells (hSSCs) were recently identified as podoplanin (PDPN)/CD73/CD164-positive and CD146-negative cells that decline with age, and play a role in the pathogenesis of osteoarthritis (OA). The aim of this study was to identify the hSSC-like properties of bone-derived mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs) of patients with late and early OA. Methods: First, we performed gene expression profiling for the hSSC markers in 32 patients with late and early OA, and donors without OA. Having identified the low expression of hSSC markers in late OA patients, we further performed trilineage differentiation and immunophenotyping for hSSC makers in the selected subsets from each donor group. Results: Our results show no differences in osteogenesis, chondrogenesis, and adipogenesis between the MSCs from the three groups. However, the immunophenotyping shows lower CD164 in MSCs from early OA patients in comparison with late and no OA subjects (p = 0.002 and p = 0.017). Conclusions: Our study shows that the in vitro hSSC-like properties of bone-derived MSCs are similar in patients with early and late OA, and in donors without OA. However, the lower percentage of CD164-positive MSCs in early OA patients indicates the potential of CD164 as a marker of the onset of OA.

The expansion of functional testicular biopsy-derived human spermatogonial stem cells (hSSC)ex vivomay enable the restoration of fertility in pre-pubertal males having undergone gonadotoxic therapies or men with severe male factor infertility. Various somatic cells are known to regulate SSC homeostasis and spermatogenesis in the developing and adult testis. Prior attempts to recapitulate this niche demonstrated the requirement of feeder cells, such as endogenous testicular somatic cells, for germ cell expansionex vivo. However, this strategy has limitations in the expansion of hSSCs from tissue biopsies for which spermatogenesis is absent or defective. Our aim was to evaluate the first trimester human umbilical cord perivascular cells (FTM HUCPVCs), a novel source of mesenchymal stromal-like cells (MSCs), as potential human feeder cells for standardized hSSC expansionex vivo.Targeted RNA sequencing analysis demonstrated that CD90+ve FTM HUCPVCs expandedin vitrounder germ cell culture conditions express a profile of targeted testicular-associated transcripts that is similar to cultured human CD90+ve testicular adherent cells (hTACs) and secrete LIF, FGF2 and BMP4, key growth factors known to regulate spermatogenesis. We also demonstrated that mitotically inactivated FTM HUCPVCs support the expansion of mouse germ cells and putative SSCsex vivoand that FTM HUCPVC transplantation promotesin vivogerm cell regeneration after mono-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (MEHP)-induced seminiferous tubule damage in a murine model, including a partial reconstitution of tubular cellular architecture and reestablishment of DAZL and acrosin+ve germ cell layers. Together, these data suggest that FTM HUCPVCs have phenotypical and functional properties that may support repair of the human testicular niche.

Abstract The rotational spectrum of gas phase HSSSH has been recorded for the first time in absorption with the Cologne free-space-cell millimeterwave spectrometer. In the frequency region between 80 and 300 GHz a prominent series of Q-branches has been observed and assigned. The hitherto identified rotational lines unambigously arise from a perpendicular-type spectrum. In addition, successive J lines of the compact Q-branches show no indication of the easily detectable intensity alternation which arises when the molecule possesses an axis of symmetry due to nuclear spin statistical weights. Therefore the geometrical structure of the molecule does not have a C2 axis of symmetry. The present data are not complete enough for a unique structure determination. However on the basis of the present data we can definitely rule out conformations with C2 or C2v symmetry to be responsible for the strongest observed transitions of the spectrum. The molecule is not floppy as predicted from semi empirical MO calculations. On the contrary the conformation observed is rather rigidly locked into one position with no sign of possible internal rotation. We consider a sulfur triangle with the two hydrogen atoms sticking out symmetrically to the same side of the SSS-plane to be the most likely structure.

Background:transient ischemic attack (tIA) and minor stroke have a high risk of early neurological deterioration, and patients who experience early improvement are at risk of deterioration. We generated a score for quantifying the worst reported motor and speech deficits and assessed whether this predicted outcome.Methods:510 tIA or minor stroke (NIHSS>4) patients were included. the Historical Stroke Severity Score (HSSS) prospectively quantified the patient's description of the worst motor or speech deficits. the HSSS was rated at the time of first assessment with more severe deficits scoring higher. Motor HSSS included assessments of arm and leg motor power (score total 0-5). Speech HSSS assessed severity of dysarthria and aphasia (total 0-3). the association between motor and speech HSSS and symptom progression was assessed during the 90-day follow-up period.Results:the proportion of patients in each category of the motor HSSS was 0: 43% (216/510), 1: 22%(110/510), 2: 17% (89/510), 3: 7% (37/510), 4: 5% (28/510) and 5: 6% (30/510). Motor HSSS was associated with symptom progression (p=0.004) but not recurrent stroke. Speech HSSS was not associated with either progression or recurrent stroke. Motor HSSS predicted disability (p=0.002) and intracranial occlusion (p=0.012). Disability increased with increasing motor HSSS.Conclusions:taking a detailed history about the severity of motor deficits, but not speech, predicted outcome in tIA and minor stroke patients. A score based on the patient's description of the severity of motor symptoms predicted symptom progression, intracranial occlusion and functional outcome, but not recurrent stroke in a tIA and minor stroke population.

AbstractThe Galactic Ridge X-ray Emission (GRXE) spectrum has strong iron emission lines at 6.4, 6.7, and 7.0 keV, each corresponding to the neutral (or low-ionized), He-like, and H-like iron ions. The 6.4 keV fluorescence line is due to irradiation of neutral (or low ionized) material (iron) by hard X-ray sources, indicating uniform presence of the cold matter in the Galactic plane. In order to resolve origin of the cold fluorescent matter, we examined the contribution of the 6.4 keV line emission from white dwarf surfaces in the hard X-ray emitting symbiotic stars (hSSs) and magnetic cataclysmic variables (mCVs) to the GRXE. In our spectral analysis of 4 hSSs and 19 mCVs observed with Suzaku, we were able to resolve the three iron emission lines. We found that the equivalent-widths (EWs) of the 6.4 keV lines of hSSs are systematically higher than those of mCVs, such that the average EWs of hSSs and mCVs are 180−10+50 eV and 93−3+20 eV, respectively. The EW of hSSs compares favorably with the typical EWs of the 6.4 keV line in the GRXE of 90–300 eV depending on Galactic positions. Average 6.4 keV line luminosities of the hSSs and mCVs are 9.2 × 1039 and 1.6 × 1039 photons s−1, respectively, indicating that hSSs are intrinsically more efficient 6.4 keV line emitters than mCVs. We estimated required space densities of hSSs and mCVs to account for all the GRXE 6.4 keV line emission flux to be 2 × 10−7 pc−3 and 1 × 10−6 pc−3, respectively. We also estimated the actual 6.4 keV line contribution from the hSSs, which is as much as 30% of the observed GRXE flux, and that from the mCV is about 50%. We therefore conclude that the GRXE 6.4 keV line flux is primarily explained by hSSs and mCVs.

ObjectiveTo carry out a systematic review of the psychometric properties of international studies that have used the Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture (HSPSC).DesignLiterature review and an analysis framework to review studies.SettingHospitals and other healthcare settings in North and South America, Europe, the Near East, the Middle East and the Far East.Data sourcesA total of 62 studies and 67 datasets made up of journal papers, book chapters and PhD theses were included in the review.Primary and secondary outcome measuresPsychometric properties (eg, internal consistency) and sample characteristics (eg, country of use, participant job roles and changes made to the original version of the HSPSC).ResultsJust over half (52%) of the studies in our sample reported internal reliabilities lower than 0.7 for at least six HSPSC dimensions. The dimensions ‘staffing’, ‘communication openness’, ‘non-punitive response to error’, ‘organisational learning’ and ‘overall perceptions of safety’ resulted in low internal consistencies in a majority of studies. The outcomes from assessing construct validity were reported in 60% of the studies. Most studies took place in a hospital setting (84%); the majority of survey participants (62%) were drawn from nursing and technical staff. Forty-two per cent of the studies did not state what modifications, if any, were made to the original US version of the instrument.ConclusionsWhile there is evidence of a growing worldwide trend in the use of the HSPSC, particularly within Europe and the Near/Middle East, our review underlines the need for caution in using the instrument. Future use of the HSPSC needs to be sensitive to the demands of care settings, the target population and other aspects of the national and local healthcare contexts. There is a need to develop guidelines covering procedures for using, adapting and translating the HSPSC, as well as reporting findings based on its use.

ObjectivesEnsuring the continuity of home support services has become increasingly important due to challenges arising from ageing demographics and healthcare staffing shortages. However, there is a lack of validated measurements specifically designed for assessing service continuity in this context. The primary objective of this study is to develop and validate scales that capture the multidimensional nature of home support service continuity (HSSC), incorporating informational continuity, management continuity and relational continuity as its underlying components. Subsequently, these scales are employed to measure the overall level of continuity experienced within home support services and investigate its association with service quality.MethodsThis study used a cross-sectional survey design with convenience sampling. Direct caregivers in the UK were recruited through the Prolific UK online platform, while direct caregivers in British Columbia, Canada were recruited through local health authorities and home support agencies. A total of 550 direct caregivers completed the online survey following the approved ethics protocol. Structural equation modelling was employed to evaluate HSSC and it underlying components. Furthermore, the study investigated the influence of HSSC on service quality within these two samples.ResultsThe quantitative tests confirmed that HSSC comprises three first-order continuity components. These components showed significant loadings on HSSC in the Canadian sample (N=367) (λinformational=0.81, λmanagement=0.93, λrelational=0.38) at p<0.01 level. This finding was further supported in the UK sample (N=183) (λinformational=0.87, λmanagement=0.90, λrelational=0.93) at p<0.01 level. In both samples, the overall HSSC showed a positive correlation with service quality (path coefficient for the Canadian sample: bHSSC_employee perceived service quality (EPSQ)=0.22, p<0.01; the UK sample: bHSSC_EPSQ=0.70, p<0.01).ConclusionsThe results support the conceptualisation of HSSC as a second-order latent construct. The newly developed and validated scales for the three first-order constructs identify specific items that could be targeted to improve HSSC and service quality.

Besides primary carbides, so-called secondary carbides are usually observed in high-speed steel (HSS) microstructure, which precipitate from the oversaturated solid solution upon its cooling. Some of the secondary carbides precipitate from an oversaturated austenite at cooling during solidification or quenching, in both cases, in the form of the relatively big particles in the bulk of a matrix. Considerably finer secondary carbides precipitate in martensitic condition during tempering inducing secondary hardening in HSSs. In general, secondary carbides of both types have obvious effect on the fracture mode of HSSs. The precipitation of secondary carbides in HSSs in solidified and heat-treated conditions has been investigated. The microstructures of HSSs have been examined using light and electron microscopy (both scanning and transmission), X-ray diffraction analysis, and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry. Results indicate that diffusion of both carbon and alloying elements plays an important role in the secondary carbide precipitation in HSSs.

Hot salt stress-corrosion cracking (HSSCC) of titanium alloys has been found in the presence of chloride and other halide salts. Here, a series of AgCl HSSCC tests on Ti-6246 were conducted using a two-point bending rig at 380-500°C to determine the boundary conditions of stress and temperature. Rapid failure occurred after 24 hours above 440 °C, whilst the trigger stress of HSSCC was determined to be 400 MPa at 380 °C. Energy dispersive X-ray during scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM-EDX) suggested the formation of metallic silver and chlorides of active alloying elements Al, Sn and Zr. The transgranular fracture surface is expected to be linked to an underlying hydrogen embrittlement via hydrogen charging from the corrosion reactions.

In South Korea, efforts to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and environmental impacts from the perspective of life cycle assessment (LCA) are important because of the implementation of zero-energy building certification for public buildings and the promotion of net-zero policy. Therefore, it is critical to develop cement alternatives with low embodied energy and less environmental impact. In this study, the applicability of “highly sulfated calcium silicate cement (HSCSC),” an eco-friendly binder developed by our research team, was investigated. Its basic properties and environmental footprint reduction effects were examined in comparison with ordinary Portland cement (OPC) and Portland blast furnace slag cement (PBSC). The environmental impacts of the HSCSC were analyzed using the LCA method. The results confirmed that HSCSC can be considered an excellent alternative to conventional OPC or PBSC in certain areas as an eco-friendly binder that can reduce carbon dioxide emissions and environmental impacts. Moreover, compared to OPC and PBSC, the probability of HSCSC affecting the human body is extremely low. The results of this study may contribute to the development and practical use of cements that minimize climate impacts, as well as improve the efficacy of future research on embodied energy saving.

High-strength steels (HSSs) with nominal yield stress not less than 460 MPa have been increasingly employed in bridge structures. Compared with SM490 normal-strength steel (NSS), HSSs, including SBHS500 and SM570, have higher strength but lower ductility, and brittle fracture can easily occur in the HSSs members with notches. Therefore, 48 tension specimens with U-notch or V-notch made of SBHS500, SM570 and SM490 structural steels are carried out. The influences of notch depth, U-notch radius, V-notch degree and chemical composition on the mechanical and fracture performances of the steel specimens are investigated. It is concluded from experimental results that SBHS500 and SM570 HSSs with higher yield stress have a relatively higher elastic stress concentration factor, crack initiation appears earlier, and brittle fracture is more likely to occur. Compared to SM570 HSS, SBHS500 HSS has better weldability.

Given that an increasing number of online healthcare channels play an essential role as a supply method in the healthcare service supply chain (HSSC), this paper studies the price decision-making problem for a dual-channel HSSC considering the channel acceptance, price ceiling, and public welfare. In this HSSC, a healthcare institution establishes both a traditional offline channel and an online channel to provide healthcare services for some health conditions. Considering the public welfare of healthcare institutions, we employ a sum formula of economic revenue and patient surplus to describe the total revenue of both healthcare service channels. Based on the Stackelberg game, we develop a decentralized supply chain model to maximize supply chain members’ revenue. By employing the Karush–Kuhn–Tucker optimality condition, we derive an analytical expression for the optimal service price, which includes the functions of the public welfare coefficient and channel acceptance. Finally, we conduct extensive numerical analyses under various system parameters to verify the optimal price decision-making strategies. Our analytical results indicate that: (1) the healthcare service price is closely related to the patients’ channel acceptance, the public welfare coefficient, and the government price ceiling policy; (2) the public welfare coefficient strongly influences the service price and total revenue, and its increase can decrease the economic revenue of the HSSC; (3) the acceptance of online channels is an essential factor that should be carefully considered in the construction of a dual-channel HSSC. Improving patient acceptance of online channels is conducive to developing and improving a sustainable dual-channel HSSC.

High-Strength Self-Consolidating Concrete (HSSCC) is a type of concrete that possesses superior mechanical properties and can self-settle without the need for vibration assistance. Numerous advancements have been implemented to enhance the properties of HSSCC. In prior experimental work, the authors investigated the mechanical characteristics of HSCC with 12.5% metakaolin and 0-15% silica fume as a partial cement substitute. Since metakaolin and silica fume have smaller particle sizes than cement, they can fill voids between aggregate and enhance the concrete’s compactness. Further structural study is necessary to provide a more complete knowledge of the impact of partially substituting cement with metakaolin and silica fume. Using the Response 2000 program, this investigation analyzes the shear behavior of reinforced HSSCC beams. Laboratory-determined material mechanical properties were utilized as simulation input data. In this investigation, the maximum strength, deflection, and crack development of five beam models produced with varying material mechanical properties were investigated and compared.

Objectives:Uncertainty is pervasive in decision making on new health technologies; therefore, some countries have put systems in place to support decision makers with timely information. An important, but as yet undocumented, determinant of the potential value for decision making of these so-called horizon scanning systems (HSSs) is how the most significant health technologies are selected.Methods:All thirteen member organizations of EuroScan, a collaborative network for HSSs, were surveyed and interviewed on how they prioritize technologies for assessment.Results:The majority of HSSs directly serves a customer. Some customers actively request early assessments of new health technologies, thereby diminishing the need for priority setting for the HSSs. All systems express a concern to miss an important technology and/or to select an unimportant technology. Almost all HSSs use explicit selection criteria, but these criteria hardly ever are operationalized. The number of criteria used varies, but costs and health benefit of the technology are always taken into account. The process of reaching a final decision is implicit, undocumented in all but one system, and is based on agreement by consensus.Conclusions:The process of making the final decision on which technologies to assess can be improved by applying existing criteria more consistently and transparently. Current practice does not safeguard against missing an important technology. This finding is probably most important to act upon for systems with customers that do not actively request assessment of specific technologies.

At present, the existing standards (AISC360-16, EN1994-1-1:2004, and JGJ138-2016) lack relevant provisions for steel-reinforced concrete (SRC) composite columns with high-strength steel. To investigate the axial compressive mechanical performance of short high-strength steel-reinforced concrete (HSSRC) columns, the axial load test was conducted on 12 short composite columns with high-strength steel and ordinary steel. The influences of steel strength, steel ratio, and the section form of steel on the failure modes, bearing capacity, and ductility of the specimens were studied. Afterward, the experimental data were compared with the existing calculation results. The results show: compared with the specimens with Q235 steel, the bearing capacity of the specimens with Q460 steel increases by 7.8–15.3%, the bearing capacity of the specimens with Q690 steel increases by 13.2–24.1%, but the ductility coefficient increases by 15.2–202.4%; with the increase of steel ratio, the bearing capacity and ductility of specimens are significantly improved. A change of the steel cross-section could influence the ductility of SRC columns more than their bearing capacity. Moreover, the calculation results show that present standards could not predict the bearing capacity of HSSRC columns. Therefore, a modified method for determining the effective strength of steel equipped in HSSRC columns was proposed. The results of the ABAQUS simulation also showed that the addition of steel fibers could significantly improve the bearing capacity of Q690 HSSRC columns. The research results provide a reference for engineering practices.

The frequency of occurrence of intervals of pulsations of diminishing periods (IPDP) has shown a very surprising inverse relation to the sunspot number. In this paper we take the annual frequency of occurrence of IPDPs at Sodankyla station for the period 1974 to 1985 and find that they correlate msitivelv with coronal hole area with a correlation coefficient of 0.77. This suggests a physical relationship between this kind of pulsations and the high speed streams (HSSs) in the solar wind coming from the holes. We compare the annual rate of lPDPs to the annual number of coronal-hole associated HSSs having a velocity equal to or higher than 550 kmls for the period from 1974 to 1982. We find a good agreement during the descending part of the solar cycle and around the maximum, but during the minimum and the first years of the ascending phase were more frequent than HSSs. We conclude that IPDPs are related to some solar wind characteristics in HSSs and we discuss a possible reason for the differences during the minimum.

Abstract High-speed solar wind streams (HSSs) interact with the preceding ambient solar wind to form stream interaction regions (SIRs), which are a primary source of recurrent geomagnetic storms. However, HSSs may also encounter and subsequently interact with interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs). In particular, the impact of the interaction between slower ICMEs and faster HSSs represents an unexplored area that requires further in-depth investigation. This specific interaction can give rise to unexpected geomagnetic storm signatures, diverging from the conventional expectations of individual SIR events sharing similar HSS properties. Our study presents a comprehensive analysis of solar wind data spanning from 1996 to 2020, capturing 23 instances where such encounters led to geomagnetic storms (SymH < −30 nT). We determined that interaction events between preceding slower ICMEs and faster HSSs possess the potential to induce substantial storm activity, statistically nearly doubling the geoeffective impact in comparison to SIR storm events. The increase in the amplitude of the SymH index appears to result from heightened dynamic pressure, often coupled with the concurrent amplification of the CMEs rearward ∣B∣ and/or B z components.

ObjectivesTo study the psychometric properties of the Georgian version of the Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture (HSPSC-GE).DesignCross-sectional study.SettingThree Georgian hospitals.ParticipantsStaff of participating hospitals (n=579 responses, response rate 41.6%).Primary and secondary outcome measuresPsychometric properties (Model fit, internal consistency, construct validity) of the instrument, factor structure derived from the data.ResultsHSPSC-GE demonstrated acceptable construct validity but highly limited internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha 0.35–0.87). Confirmatory factor analysis with the original 12-factor model resulted in poor model fit (root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA)=0.06; standardised root mean square residuals (SRMR)=0.08; comparative fit index (CFI)=0.74; goodness of fit index (GFI)=0.81; Tucker-Lewis Index (TLI)=0.70). Accounting for reversed item bias resulted in improved fit indices. Exploratory factor analysis resulted in an alternative five-factor model including only 19 items, but with satisfactory model fit (RMSEA=0.07; SRMR=0.07; CFI=0.90; GFI=0.89; TLI=0.88).ConclusionsThe HSPSC-GE as a whole demonstrated poor psychometric properties. However, a number of dimensions demonstrated acceptable internal consistency and reliability. Our results indicated presence of reversed item bias, which may be inherent to the original instrument design of the HSPSC and should be taken into account while interpreting or comparing results, as well as in analyses of psychometric properties of the instrument. Nevertheless, the HSPSC-GE provides first insights in hospital patient safety culture (PSC) in Georgia and we recommend using it in its full form to facilitate deeper analysis and further development of PSC in Georgian healthcare.

The microstructure and properties of niobium-containing AISI M3:2 high speed steels (HSSs) fabricated by spray forming and traditional casting have been investigated. The results show that fine and uniformly-distributed grains without macrosegregation appeared in the as-deposited HSSs that differ from those of as-cast HSSs. Nb mostly appears in primary MC carbides, whereas it contributes less to the formation of M6C carbides. The high stabilization of Nb-rich MC carbides can pin the grain boundaries during high-temperature austenitizing process, thus conferring a fine grains and raising the content of dissolved alloying elements. Enhanced precipitation strengthening and fine dispersion of NbC carbides throughout the matrix contribute to the high hardness and red hardness of Nb-containing HSS.

Prestressed, precast concrete piles using High-Strength Steel Strands (PPCPs using HSSS) are a new type of precast pile. Compared with prestressed high-strength concrete (PHC) piles, the adoption of ultra-high-strength concrete and HSSS not only improves the load-bearing capacity, but also enhances the ductility of precast piles. The engineering application of PPCPs using HSSS requires not only a high bearing capacity of the pile segments, but also reliable splicing to ensure cooperation between pile segments. Based on the characteristics of strand anchorage plates, this paper proposes a new combination splice using the clamp ring and welding (Combination Splice). The theoretical analysis and design method of this Combination Splice is introduced. This research gives a thorough investigation into the flexural performance of PPCPs using HSSS with the Combination Splice. The flexural tests of PPCPs using HSSS with the Combination Splice were firstly conducted on eight full-scale pile specimens with three different pile diameters and four different steel reinforcement ratios. The flexural performances are evaluated in terms of crack resistance, flexural capacities, crack distribution, as well as strain development. The results indicate that the Combination Splice remain safe and intact when the piles reach the ultimate bending capacity. The ultimate bending moment of tested specimens with the Combination Splice is, on average, 10% larger than that of specimens using a theoretical formula. In light of the experimental data, a finite element analysis (FEA) model has been created to simulate the flexural performance of the piles with the Combination Splice. The FEA results show that the load–displacement curves and crack distribution regions are in good agreement with the experimental findings, which verifies the reliability and accuracy of the FEA model. The parameter analysis investigates the effects of the assembly gap and clamp ring corrosion on the flexural performance of PPCPs using HSSS. The results show that assembly gaps have a greater influence on the flexural capacity and deformation, while the influence of the clamp ring corrosion is negligible, indicating that the Combination Splice has certain advantages in terms of durability.

High-strength self-compacting concrete (HSSCC) is a special concrete that mixes self-compacting and high-strength properties. The production of HSSCC may require a high cement content, which increases the cost and limits production. This research focuses on producing HSSCC using glass powder (GP) to reduce the cement content and absorb glass waste. In this research, the experimental study was conducted on the degree of eleven experimental mixtures for SCC samples. Two types of glass waste powder (bottle glass powder and window glass powder) were added as a partial substitute for cement in proportions 10-50% by weight of cement. To evaluate the performance of GP, tests on workability, compressive strength, and transport characteristics (Chloride Permeability, Sorptivity Coefficient, and Water Permeability) were performed. The results showed that adding GP to concrete improved its fresh properties, which met the requirements of EFNARC specifications. The results also showed that adding GP decreased compressive strength with an increase in replacement rates. On the other hand, the transport properties improved, and the water and chloride permeability decreased with GP compared to the reference mixture. Background The Covid-19 pandemic caused a rapidly evolving and confused situation. Health sciences students (HSSs) are not immune to depression, anxiety and stress during such a pandemic. We aimed to assess the relation between depression, anxiety, stress and resilience among undergraduate HSSs during the Covid-19 lockdown. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional, online survey at a rural tertiary healthcare centre in Maharashtra. Data were recorded from study participants on sociodemographic details using the 21-item Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21) and the Brief Resilience Scale (BRS). Data were analysed using SPSS software version 15.0. Results A total of 381 students participated in the online survey. The prevalence of depression, anxiety and stress were 7.6%, 6.3% and 1.0%, respectively. There was a positive correlation between all three sub-scales of DASS-21. On BRS, 5 (1.3%) participants had high resilience, 216 (56.7%) had normal resilience and 160 (42.0%) had low resilience. Those respondents who had high resilience had lower rates of depression, anxiety and stress on DASS-21 sub-scales. Conclusion A proportion of HSSs had anxiety, depression and stress during the Covid-19 outbreak and lockdown. Respondents with high resilience had less frequent depression, anxiety and stress. In the long run, strengthening resilience of HSSs may be useful.

Mesenchymal stem cells, also known as multipotent stromal progenitor cells, can differentiate into cells of mesodermal lineage. Gangliosides are sialic acid-conjugated glycosphingolipids that are believed to regulate cell differentiation and several signaling molecules. These molecules are localized in glycosphingolipid-enriched microdomains on the cell surface and are regulated by glycosphingolipid composition. Transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) signaling plays a critical role in chondrogenic differentiation. However, the role of gangliosides in chondrogenesis is not understood. In this study, the relationship between the ganglioside GM3 and TGF-β activation, during chondrogenic differentiation, was investigated using an aggregate culture of human synovial membrane-derived mesenchymal stem cells. We showed that the gangliosides GM3 and GD3 were expressed after the chondrogenic differentiation of hSMSC aggregates. To test whether GM3 affected the chondrogenic differentiation of hSMSC aggregates, we used GM3 treatment during chondrogenic differentiation. The results showed that the group treated with 5 μM GM3 had higher expression of chondrogenic specific markers, increased toluidine blue, and safranin O staining, and increased accumulation of glycosaminoglycans compared with the untreated group. Furthermore, GM3 treatment enhanced TGF-β signaling via SMAD 2/3 during the chondrogenic differentiation of hSMSC aggregates. Taken together, our results suggested that GM3 may be useful in developing therapeutic agents for cell-based articular cartilage regeneration in articular cartilage disease.

Purpose – This paper aims to explore the match between needs and services related to participation for frail older adults receiving home care. Design/methodology/approach – A qualitative multiple case study was conducted with 11 triads each involving an elder, a caregiver and a healthcare provider working in a Health and Social Services Centers (HSSCs). Findings – Although HSSCs in Québec are supposed to promote social integration and participation of older adults, services provided to the older adults in this study focused mainly on safety and independence in personal care, dressing, mobility and nutrition, without fully meeting older adults’ needs in these areas. Discrepancies between needs and services may be attributable to the assessment not covering all the dimensions of social participation or accurately identifying older adults’ complex needs; older adults’ and their caregivers’ difficulties identifying their needs and accepting their limitations and the assistance offered; healthcare providers’ limited knowledge and time to comprehensively assess needs and provide services; guidelines restricting the types and quantity of services to be supplied; and limited knowledge of older adults, caregivers and healthcare providers about services and resources available in the community. Originality/value – To improve and maintain older adults’ participation, a more thorough assessment of their participation, especially in social activities, is required, as is greater support for older adults and their families in using available community resources. It is also important to review the services provided by HSSCs and to optimize partnerships with community organizations.

Hollow silica spheres (HSS) are prepared via soft template method. The morphology, internal structure, phase composition, particle size distribution and porosity of HSSs are characterized. It is found that the amorphous HSSs with thin shell thickness and density of around 0.41 g/cm3 have good sphericity and are relatively uniform in size. Most importantly, the size of the synthesized spheres is controlled successfully via stirring rate, and the linear fitting equation is described as d50 = -0.45 × R + 206. This research provides a facile way to produce HSS with low density which has promising application in many fields.

This study entitled “Problems in the Construction of Sentence at HSSC Level in Pakistan” strives to unearth the problems faced by the students in learning sentence structure through literature and the facts regarding the role of literature as a teaching tool in teaching English as a second/foreign language with reference to the construction of sentence at Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSSC) level in Pakistan. This study also investigates how much the students learn English sentence structure through literature. To achieve the set objectives of this study, the researcher went for the quantitative research methodology. So, a questionnaire comprising of 30 items encompassing the different aspects of sentence structure was designed to collect data from 600 subjects (male/female) of HSSC (Higher Secondary School Certificate) level. The researcher has also conducted an achievement test so that a correlation might be drawn between their attitude towards “teaching English sentence structure through literature” and the score of their achievement test. The collected data were analyzed through software package (SPSS XX) which is commonly used in applied linguistics. The findings of this study explicitly reveal that the EFL learners remain unable to learn and develop both the contraction of sentence and syntactic skills when they are taught English through literature. This study recommends that the teaching of English should be application oriented and task-based strategies and activities should be resorted to by the FL educators.

The use of high-strength sandy concrete (HSSC) is an alternative to high-strength crushed stone. Its use is profitable for those regions of Russia in which crushed stone is an imported building material. Thus, crushed stone is supplied to the Republic of Tatarstan (RT) from the Ural, and the local reserves of sand are significant. Authors presented the results of studies to determine the economic efficiency of solid columns’ erection in one-story industrial buildings with bridge cranes according to the 1.424.1-5 series from HSSC of HSSC60 and HSSC80 classes in comparison with heavy concrete of B20...B80 classes. Studies have shown that in relation to Kazan, the use of HSSC of HSSC60 and HSSC80 classes in comparison with heavy concrete of B20...B40 classes, depending on the size of the span, column spacing, floor height and lifting capacity of cranes, can reduce steel consumption by 43.2…71.5 %. At the same time, the total cost of materials (steel and concrete) when using heavy concrete of B20...B40 classes is 1.7 %...38.1 % lower than with HSSC60 and HSSC80. This is due to the sharp rise in the cost of concrete in the Russian market in the third quarter of 2002 and continuing to the present (second quarter of 2021). When recalculated before the indicated price increase, the use of HSSC60 and HSSC80 in comparison with heavy concrete of B20…B40 classes gives a decrease in the total cost of materials by 1.9...34.5 %. The results obtained are novel because in the scientific and technical literature there is no information about the design of these columns from the HSSC.

Since the 1970s it has been empirically known that the area of solar coronal holes affects the properties of high-speed solar wind streams (HSSs) at Earth. We derive a simple analytical model for the propagation of HSSs from the Sun to Earth and thereby show how the area of coronal holes and the size of their boundary regions affect the HSS velocity, temperature, and density near Earth. We assume that velocity, temperature, and density profiles form across the HSS cross section close to the Sun and that these spatial profiles translate into corresponding temporal profiles in a given radial direction due to the solar rotation. These temporal distributions drive the stream interface to the preceding slow solar wind plasma and disperse with distance from the Sun. The HSS properties at 1 AU are then given by all HSS plasma parcels launched from the Sun that did not run into the stream interface at Earth distance. We show that the velocity plateau region of HSSs as seen at 1 AU, if apparent, originates from the center region of the HSS close to the Sun, whereas the velocity tail at 1 AU originates from the trailing boundary region. Small HSSs can be described to entirely consist of boundary region plasma, which intrinsically results in smaller peak velocities. The peak velocity of HSSs at Earth further depends on the longitudinal width of the HSS close to the Sun. The shorter the longitudinal width of an HSS close to the Sun, the more of its “fastest” HSS plasma parcels from the HSS core and trailing boundary region have impinged upon the stream interface with the preceding slow solar wind, and the smaller is the peak velocity of the HSS at Earth. As the longitudinal width is statistically correlated to the area of coronal holes, this also explains the well-known empirical relationship between coronal hole areas and HSS peak velocities. Further, the temperature and density of HSS plasma parcels at Earth depend on their radial expansion from the Sun to Earth. The radial expansion is determined by the velocity gradient across the HSS boundary region close to the Sun and gives the velocity-temperature and density-temperature relationships at Earth their specific shape. When considering a large number of HSSs, the assumed correlation between the HSS velocities and temperatures close to the Sun degrades only slightly up to 1 AU, but the correlation between the velocities and densities is strongly disrupted up to 1 AU due to the radial expansion. Finally, we show how the number of particles of the piled-up slow solar wind in the stream interaction region depends on the velocities and densities of the HSS and preceding slow solar wind plasma.

The present study was carried out to spot the raters’ practices in marking English essays at the intermediate level in contrast to the marking system of O-level English language assessment in Punjab, Pakistan. The preceding researchers opined that a significant number of students fail in English as a subject. To unravel, the facts a sample of 350 HSSC (Higher Secondary School Certificate) paper raters with mixed experience, academic and professional qualifications have been taken randomly from the different districts of Punjab. Many of them had worked as examiners or sub-examiner for more than 10 years. The researchers formulated, piloted, and self-administered a questionnaire by visiting their workplaces. SPSS has been used to assay the data, and results have been generated. The results deduced that HSSC paper raters never exercised any rubric. They deduct and award scores on their individual judgments about the kind/number of mistakes, length of an essay, and handwriting. There has been found a scarcity of inter-rater reliability. Further, they are self-trained and are ignorant of the objectives; set in the national curriculum for HSSC. The current study is significant as it has implications onboard officials, policymakers, and examiners, which will finally promote skill-based learning.

Background Primary care providers are well positioned to foster self-management through linking patients to community-based health and social services (HSSs). This study evaluated a web-based tool—GENIE (Generating Engagement in Network Involvement)—to support the self-management of adults. GENIE empowers patients to leverage their personal social networks and increase their access to HSSs. GENIE maps patients’ personal social networks, elicits preferences, and filters local HSSs from a community service directory based on patient’s interests. Trained volunteers (an extension of the primary care team) conducted home visits and conducted surveys related to life and health goals in the context of the Health TAPESTRY (Teams Advancing Patient Experience: Strengthening Quality) program, in which the GENIE tool was implemented. GENIE reports were uploaded to an electronic medical record for care planning by the team. Objective This study aims to explore patients’, volunteers’, and clinicians’ perceptions of the feasibility, usability, and perceived outcomes of GENIE—a tool for community-dwelling adults who are high users of the health care system. Methods This study involved 2 primary care clinician focus groups and 1 clinician interview (n=15), 1 volunteer focus group (n=3), patient telephone interviews (n=8), field observations that captured goal-action sequences to complete GENIE, and GENIE utilization statistics. The patients were enrolled in a primary care program—Health TAPESTRY—and Ontario’s Health Links Program, which coordinates care for the highest users of the health care system. NVivo 11 (QSR International) was used to support qualitative data analyses related to feasibility and perceived outcomes, and descriptive statistics were used for quantitative data. Results Most participants reported positive overall perceptions of GENIE. However, feasibility testing showed that participants had a partial understanding of the tool; volunteer facilitation was critical to support the implementation of GENIE; clinicians perceived their navigation ability as superior to that of GENIE supported by volunteers; and tool completion took 39 minutes, which made the home visit too long for some. Usability challenges included difficulties completing some sections of the tool related to medical terminology and unclear instructions, limitations in the quality and quantity of HSSs results, and minor technological challenges. Almost all patients identified a community program or activity of interest. Half of the patients (4/8, 50%) followed up on HSSs and added new members to their network, whereas 1 participant lost a member. Clinicians’ strengthened their understanding of patients’ personal social networks and needs, and patients felt less social isolation. Conclusions This study demonstrated the potential of GENIE, when supported by volunteers, to expand patients’ social networks and link them to relevant HSSs. Volunteers require training to implement GENIE for self-management support, which may help overcome the time limitations faced by primary care clinicians. Refining the filtering capability of GENIE to address adults’ needs may improve primary care providers’ confidence in using such tools.

English Language Teaching has become a compulsory subject in the curricula of many developing countries. There has been an increase in the trend of skeptic viewing of the credibility of this subject for teaching only a language and not its ideology and culture. Studies show that under the impact of ELT learners develop a positive attitude to English culture and depreciation of the indigenous one. Same is the case in Pakistan. English ideologies and cultural representation were uncovered through the application of CDA. The main ideologies found in these books were superiority of “Us/Self” and the inferiority of “Them/Other”. The paper present the source and target culture in their true perspective making the source culture part of esteem instead of the foreign culture.
