Abstract This article explores the concept of the arlequin, the plate of used food collected piecemeal from the tables of the rich to sell to the poor, as it was popularized by Eugène Sue in 1842 in his blockbuster novel Les Mystères de Paris. I show how this alimentary genre functions in this text not only to reflect a socioeconomic reality of the nineteenth-century politics of eating, but also to introduce a budding aesthetic principle. The harlequin meal, composed of bits and pieces of various origins reassembled as a patchwork whole, inaugurates in Sue’s novel a reappearing pattern that comes to characterize not only food but also bodies, clothing, décor, narrative form, and modes of attention and belief. I argue that the aesthetics of patchwork and collage extend as well to Sue’s self-fashioning as a political and moral opportunist.

The accumulation of properties by Spanish banks during the crisis of the first decade of the 21st century has definitely changed the housing market. An optimal house price valuation is useful to determine the bank’s actual financial situation. Furthermore, properties valued according to the market can be sold in a shorter span of time and at a better price. Using a sample of 24,781 properties and a simulation exercise, we aim to identify the decision criteria that Spanish banking used to decide which properties were going to be sold and at what price. The results of the comparison among four methods used to value real estate—artificial neural networks, semi log regressions, a combined model by means of weighted least squares regression, and quantile regressions—and the actual situation suggest that banking aimed to maximize the reversal of impairment losses, although this would mean capital losses, selling less properties, and decreasing their revenues. Therefore, the actual combined result was very detrimental to banking and, consequently, to the Spanish society because of its banking bailout.

Real estate is a very emerging field in everyone’s day to day life. The prices of houses are regularly changing on daily basis and are sometimes fired rather than based on actual estimates. Foreseeing property costs by actual components is a main criterion of this research paper. Our basic aim is to take all the actual and primary features to determine the result of our system. We have used regression models like decision tree classifier, random forest, and multiple linear regression classifier for prediction to get better results and for upgraded accuracy. This paper will give information that how we will predict the home price with the help of different features and python with its libraries. How can multiline providers induce their salespeople to sell house brands? Using both unobtrusive measures (archival data) and direct questions, the authors model the extent to which salespeople adopt house brands, as well as the salesperson's perception that selling house brands can pose contractual hazards and his or her dependence upon the employer. Results indicate that adoption of house brands is most pronounced for salespeople who are habitually successful, are more dependent on the firm, or receive high levels of company training. In contrast, salespeople who resist house brands perceive that selling these products threatens their customer bond, have greater experience as a salesperson, and are more oriented to external than to internal sources of information. The authors discuss implications of the findings in terms of developing ways for multiline providers to manage independent-minded salespeople.

Abstract: Determining how much a house will sell for in a city is still a challenging and time-consuming task. This article's goal is to make predictions about the coherence of non-housing prices. A crucial method to ease the challenging design is to use machine learning, which can intelligently optimize the best pipeline fit for a task or dataset. For individuals who will be residing in a home for an extended period of time but not permanently, it is essential to predict the selling price. Real estate forecasting is a crucial part of the industry. From historical real estate market data, the literature seeks to extract pertinent information. Land price bubbles grow as a result of real estate prices, which leads to macroeconomic instability. The government should look into the variables that drive up real estate prices so that it can use them as a guide to assist stabilize the area. There are many economic circumstances that are in play at the time also have an impact on the selling price of a home.

Before the agreement is agreed upon, the parties express their wishes or wishes so that the objectives of the house sale and purchase agreement are achieved, so that when the agreement is implemented, all of these rights and obligations must be fulfilled by the parties to fulfill each other's wishes. The House Sale and Purchase Agreement when viewed from the latest legal rules, namely, the Regulation of the Minister of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) of the Republic of Indonesia, issued a Ministerial Regulation (Permen) PUPR Number 11 / PRT / M / 2019 concerning the Preliminary House Buying Agreement System. This regulation was signed by the Minister of PUPR, M. Basuki Hadimuljono, on July 12, 2019. This regulation regulates the sale of houses or flats by developers to the community. The issues raised in this paper are how the legal protection for home buyers is based on the Ministerial Regulation (Permen) PUPR Number 11 / PRT / M / 2019 and what are the legal requirements that home developers must have in selling their products based on Ministerial Regulation (Permen) PUPR Number 11 / PRT / M / 2019. For a brief time at the beginning of James I's reign purveyance appeared as the greatest grievance of the commonwealth, troubling the first two sessions of his first parliament. So much has long been known, but only recently has it been revealed how far the commons thought of going. The bills read in the house in 1604 and 1606, almost certainly identical or nearly so, did not look merely to remedy the abuses of purveyors, but to abolish purveyance itself – the king's right to be served provisions and carriage at prices below those current in the markets – which the house discovered was explicitly prohibited by numerous medieval statutes. The commons' refusal in the two sessions to buy the king out of his prerogative with a ‘composition’ was not then irresponsible, as one historian has suggested. The house could not readily agree to purchase what it had learned the king had no right to sell. The radical challenge to the king's prerogative embodied in the commons' bill, Dr Croft has recently argued, doomed the composition proposed by James's ministers. Instead, the house pursued its claims with ‘remarkable tenacity’, especially in 1606, when it passed the bill twice.

This article asks the policy question: How is the Texas Legislature preparing to protect the Texas energy industry from the federal regulation of greenhouse gas emissions? The article begins with an explanation of why federal regulation of greenhouse gas emissions appears to be a practical certainty. In 2007, a 5-4 U.S. Supreme Court majority held the Environmental Protection Agency must regulate greenhouse gas emissions or find some reason rooted in the Clean Air Act why it should not act. This article will explore this decision, as well as the executive order that followed and the American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009. This article next discusses the implications of three bills passed into law by the 81st Legislature relating to carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) technology. House Bill 1796 provides for a carbon dioxide repository in subsurface geologic formations off the coast of Texas. House Bill 469 provides for the creation of clean energy projects, in which coal plants sequester carbon dioxide into geologic formations for permanent storage. Senate Bill 1387 establishes a regulatory framework for the implementation of CCS technology in Texas. Finally, this article analyzes three bills relating to renewable energy that failed to be enacted. These bills serve as a foundation-and possibly an indication- of legislative initiatives to come in the following sessions. House Bill 1243 would have allowed customers of retail electric providers to sell back to the grid surplus energy generated from renewable energy sources. Senate Bill 541 would have updated renewable energy source goals and modified the Texas Renewable Energy Credit trading program. Senate Bill 545 would have provided incentives for investment in solar energy generation, as well as reduced the initial costs of implementation

When cleaning the house sometimes found a number of Preloved items, where these items are only used once or not used at all and stored for quite a long time at home. Used goods that accumulate in the house make the room in the house even narrower. Therefore, Preloved items are more profitable if they are sold rather that being thrown away or stored. Besides that, selling Preloved items can get extra money and help in environmental preservation. So the writer got an idea how to use a website as a marketplace to sell Preloved goods in Batam city, namely the Batam Preloved Shop. Batam residents get information on Preloved items they want to buy through this marketplace. The method used in designing and developing the Batam Preloved Shop is Agile. Next, test the system by testing the Black Box and System Usability Scale (SUS). Abstract Ovid’s depiction of the House of Fama, the goddess of Rumour, in Book XII of the Metamorphoses illustrates a complex relationship between voice, identity and text. This paper will argue that Ovid, through the House of Fama, reveals how the impossibility of maintaining the integrity of corporeality is related to the implausibility of claiming authority over any literary text. Ovid uses the concept of the rumour to inscribe the breakdown of the boundaries of the body and identity, in the context of the breakdown of the unity of the literary text, revealing how the voice we call our own, that is central to our sense of the singularity of the self, is made up of the voices of other people, and how the literary text is understood to be an unstable amalgamation of the voices of other authors.

In From House to Home: Social Control and Emancipation in Portuguese Public Housing, 1926–76, Nelson Mota considers public housing policies in Portugal under the dictatorship that ruled there from 1926 to 1974 and during the two years that followed the democratic revolution of April 1974. He reviews key legislative initiatives and projects to show how the dictatorship's policies effectively commodified housing, exerted government control over the working class, and largely excluded the urban poor from the housing market. By contrast, programs developed under the postrevolutionary Serviço de Apoio Ambulatório Local, or SAAL, promoted self-help initiatives that aimed to improve housing conditions for Portugal's poorest citizens, thus securing their economic and social independence and their right to occupy urban space. During the “SAAL spring,” Mota concludes, building homes became more important than selling houses.

We live in complex times, in a world where the difference between rich and poor people is enormous. The distance between the two social categories increases from year to year, especially when in a certain year, events appear that can be included in the category of natural disasters and that have a very big impact on the security and well-being of the population. The study we propose considers two elements: an analysis of poor people, who do not have a stable shelter and who suffer greatly from it, but also a product we are working on and which could have a positive impact, both on them, as well as on the environment. The study we propose is based on data provided by EUROSTAT and the National Institute of Statistics (NSI), in order to determine the number and distribution of people who do not have a house or have a disused building in which they live. Based on the values obtained in the period 2000-2019 we can determine, equally, the dynamics of declining population security (lack of housing or improper housing), as well as the positive impact on the environment, if this product will be implemented nationally. Attention must be focused on how to make the future product, brick. This attention is necessary because we use, in the construction of future bricks, raw material that may contain various bacteria that can, in turn, endanger the lives of the population, if the construction process is not checked at any time and if certain are not used. substances intended to destroy bacteria before the actual composition of the product and its assembly. On the one hand, the realization of this product will offer an extra chance in the fight against poverty by ensuring an optimal living environment. Building a house for people in the social category of poor people is a chance for them to start a new life. Every individual needs the security of a place to consider at home. On the other hand, the realization of this product has certain benefits for the environment. Based on the principle of the circular economy, the waste that currently pollutes most surfaces in Romania can be transformed into bricks and used to build houses or sell them to our neighbors. In this way, the quantities of waste stored in landfills can be reduced by up to 60-70%. At the end of the analysis and description of the product, we formulated certain courses of action in order to streamline the selective collection and increase the number of bricks, as well as certain courses of action that may be the basis of a future regional development strategy. Abstract. Increasing price precision leads to linearly stronger anchoring effects for amateurs, but highly precise anchors can backfire for experts. Previous research focused on experts bargaining about an object within their expertise domain (e.g., real-estate agents negotiated about a house listed at €978,781.63). This leaves unknown whether too much precision backfires for experts because of their (a) general negotiation expertise, (b) domain-specific pricing knowledge, or (c) the combination of general expertise and price-knowledge. Our pre-registered report seeks to replicate the too-much-precision effect and to experimentally separate general negotiation expertise from domain-specific price-knowledge. Seasoned experts (real-estate agents) negotiate about an object either within (house) or outside (motor yacht) their domain of expertise. We measure experts’ willingness to pay (WTP), counteroffer, self-ascribed versus other-ascribed competence, and their self-ascribed versus other-ascribed price-knowledge. Based on responses of 400 professional real-estate agents, we replicate the advantageous anchor precision effect and illustrate that too much precision backfires regardless of whether agents negotiate within (house) or outside (yacht) their domain of expertise. Mediation analysis suggests that, consistent with previous research, the impact of precise anchors is due to the competence attributed to the negotiation opponent. Our results offer insights into the psychological mechanisms and theoretical understanding of anchor precision.

This article, originally presented in the context of and following a dance performance, discusses how the author, also the choreographer/performer and a dance therapist, works with movement and meaning as part of the therapeutic journey. Following some discussion about dance, the language of dance, and dance therapy, the article presents the view that the concept of relinquishment, as represented by the title of the paper, is intrinsically linked to the concept of home, and that, without recognising the significance of relinquishment, we cannot fully know or understand the concept of “home”. Both the dance work, represented in pictures in the text, and the paper itself explicate this link between home and relinquishment: presenting the idea that by recognising and embracing relinquishment we come closer to knowing wholeness and wellness. The article also describes how the performed dance My House Burned Down can be interpreted as a therapeutic process and, as such, can be seen to move through struggle to a new perspective on presently held ideas about ‘home,’ ‘self’ and the capacity and potential of one’s self. Other commentaries are collections of essays, each inspired by a passage in the text, but each growing into a relatively self-contained discussion. Sparshott's commentary is neither of these things.

As time passes and the children grow up, stay-at-home Dorothy leans more and more on the bottle. Things come to a head when Raymond comes home from work and finds Dorothy passed on the floor of their bedroom. He wants to help, but doesn’t know how. He decides the best thing to do is to open a local gallery for one of their children to display and sell her art. Dorothy, he thinks, can run the shop and get out of the house. The gallery opening is a success, but Dorothy is busy sneaking a drink in the bathroom. It seems she is not yet ready to get sober.

Qualitative data from fieldwork engaging with hotel employees located within the tourist resort of Queenstown New Zealand are used to explore the multiple fronts on which the front-of-house and back-of-house boundaries are simultaneously negotiated. The results suggest that Room Attendants negotiate the front-of-house and back-of-house boundary through objects – such as the guest room and articles belonging to the guest – and aspects of self– such as impression management, safety, socialising and self-responsibility for room checking. The results support the importance of considering context when seeking to understand the complexities associated with the (re)production of a reliably positive service encounter.

The southern part of the Special Province of Yogyakarta consists of a coastline spanning over 113 km, under the administrations of Bantul, Gunung Kidul and Kulon Progo regencies, that can become an asset and resource of an important economy. Cabe Merah (red chilli) is one of the commodities that show high numbers of productivity in Kulon Progo Regency. Activities of red chilli farming on the coastal land of this regency have been growing, especially since the establishment of commodity auction market to help farmers sell their harvests. The study was conducted to (1) find out the size of production in red chilli agribusiness on coastal land, (2) to analyze the risk levels of production faced by the farmers, and (3) how to mitigate the production risks on coastal red chilli farming. There were 40 participating farmers from Banaran Village, Galur Sub-district, Kulon Progo Regency. The location was intentionally chosen by using multistage area sampling method. The data used were collected from the production and income of three growing seasons. Data analyses were performed using production risk and The House of Risk methods. Based on the variance coefficient, the production risks level was at 0,03 with the production lower limit of 9.596 Kg/Ha, which showed a low level of risk. The various risk mitigation strategies have been performed by the farmers to lessen the risks that can causes losses in the process of coastal red chilli productions.

As immersive technologies have become ubiquitous today, traditional museums are finding success augmenting existing exhibits to increase visitors’ satisfaction. However, due to the immutable nature of house museums, and their tendency to place visitors in direct contact with historical artifacts, museum managers are seeking original approaches to cultural preservation. Implementing mixed reality systems into historic house museums is one such approach. The goal of this study is to develop and test a conceptual matrix that guides how designers use the affordances of mixed reality systems to create experiences that align with the range of historical narratives found in house museums. Experiences that can contribute to improving visitors’ satisfaction, self-interpretation, and understanding of the homeowner’s life and the community within which they lived. Building on human-centered design methods, the researcher developed and tested a prototype of an augmented reality (AR) mobile application centered on the Pope House Museum in Raleigh, North Carolina. The outcome of the research suggests house museum visitors should have agency in deciding the lens through which they experience the variety of historical narratives present in the home.

House improvement is associated with remarkable reductions in indoor mosquito bites and disease incidences, even in typical rural houses. However, its exploitation remains extremely poor in Tanzania and other endemic countries due to limited financial resources. Nevertheless, village community banks (VICOBA), practiced in Tanzania for nearly two decades, have proven to provide financial services to rural communities that would otherwise not be able to get them from formal financial institutions. This study explored the need, opinion, and willingness of VICOBA members to use VICOBA platforms as a source of finance for improving local houses and eventually controlling mosquito-borne diseases. A mixed-methods approach was used in this study, whereby a survey was administered to 150 participants and twelve focus group discussions were done in three villages in Ulanga district, rural Tanzania. The FGDs comprised eight participants each, with equal representation of males and females. The FGD guide was used to probe the opinions of study participants on malaria transmission, housing condition improvements, and financial resources. About 99% of all participants indicated the urgent need to improve their houses to prevent mosquito bites and were willing to utilize VICOBA for improving their houses. In the focus group discussion, the majority of people who participated were also in need of improving their houses. All participants confirmed that they were at the highest risk of getting mosquito-borne diseases, and they were willing to use money that was either saved or borrowed from their VICOBA for housing improvements and vector control. A self-sustaining financial system destined for house improvement and related interventions against malaria and other mosquito-borne diseases is crucial. The community members were willing to use VICOBA as a source of finance for house improvement and disease control; however, there was limited knowledge and sensitization on how they could utilize VICOBA for disease control.

House price prediction is an important problem for individuals, companies, organizations, and governments. With a vast amount of diversified and multimodal data available about houses, the predictive models built should seek to make the best use of these data. This leads to the complex problem of how to effectively use multimodal data for house price prediction. Moreover, this is also a context suffering from class imbalance, an issue that cannot be disregarded. In this paper, we propose a new algorithm for addressing these problems: the imbalanced multimodal attention-based system (IMAS). The IMAS makes use of an oversampling strategy that operates on multimodal data, namely using text, numeric, categorical, and boolean data types. A self-attention mechanism is embedded to leverage the usage of neighboring information that can benefit the model’s performance. Moreover, the self-attention mechanism allows for the determination of the features that are the most relevant and adapts the weights used according to that information when performing inference. Our experimental results show the clear advantage of the IMAS, which outperforms all the competitors tested. The analysis of the weights obtained through the self-attention mechanism provides insights into the features’ relevance and also supports the importance of using this mechanism in the predictive model.

A reassessment of Francesca Woodman’s work is due, particularly with respect to how her photographs contribute to theorizing “the space of the subject” (Kirby 11). Woodman’s House Series, which she completed in Rhode Island between 1975 and 1978, then a young student photographer of the Rhode Island School of Design, provides fertile ground to assess the importance of ‘space’ to Woodman’s work and its critical reception. Carol Armstrong’s essay “Francesca Woodman: A Ghost in the House of the Woman Artist” argues that Woodman’s “use of space—that of the house most often—of very old houses (inhabited by very young bodies)” is indicative of an identity resting on the threshold of gender (348). The “spatial aspect” of Woodman’s work, Armstrong argues, reveals the female as a “figure of irruptive difference” occupying a “ludic space”, where play is an act of self-definition (350).Woodman’s affinity with places marked by dirt, dust and decay, however, is discordant with the easy categorization of her as one on the verge of a preoccupation with ‘feminine space.’ “Space and where we are in it” writes Kathleen Kirby in Defining the Space of the Subject: Investigating the Boundaries of Feminism, “determines a large portion of our status as subjects” (Kirby 12). It is my suggestion that the issues of identity in theHouse Series demand a fresh look, which considers their spatial context. Looking closely at photographs House #3 and House #4, I will explore the themes of identity and place, woman and artist, with the conviction that these contrasting themes are united. Edward Casey argues in Getting Back into Place: Toward a Renewed Understanding of the Place World that “body and place belong together” (45) and I begin this analysis of Woodman’s House Series with the assertion that place, or where we are, “has everything to do with what and who we are” (Casey xiii).

The willingness to purchase a house is closely related to previous experiences with housing market changes. This paper establishes the variable effects of willingness to purchase a house based on experience to analyze how experience with the Lost Decade (1991 to 2001) in Japan has influenced its housing market. This study finds that when the regional house-price levels are less deviated from those of Tokyo, willingness to purchase a house is relatively higher, which inhibits the growth of rent prices. Grouping data into urban and non-urban areas shows that the negative impact of willingness to purchase a house is higher in non-urban areas. This indicates an urban–rural gap in the country and house prices in the urban areas can self-adjust so that willingness to purchase a house does not reflect significantly on the rental market. Experience with the cumulative house prices of each prefecture from 1985 to 2015 relative to the Tokyo standard is calculated for deviation to determine whether the cumulative experience of long-term past losses could be used to analyze divergence in the regional housing markets.

Abstract Exploring the connection between Dostoevsky’s Lev Nikolaevich Myshkin, Bitov’s Lev Nikolaevich Odoevtsev, and Lev Nikolaevich Tolstoy, this article interprets The Idiot through the prism of Pushkin House. The overarching claim is that Bitov’s novel and hero provide deep insight into Dostoevsky’s. Specifically, Pushkin House illuminates a dynamic left cryptic in The Idiot: how sentimental scripting (narratology) interrelates with humanism (theology), and how sentimental humanism, despite the good intentions of its practitioners, is counterproductive. In brief, sensitivity, a positive trait, unchecked by the sobering notion of sin, easily tips into sentimentality, prone to idolize the other. Idolatry of other, paradoxically, turns out to be idolatry of self. Apparently innocuous and sympathetic, sentimental scripting nevertheless contains the seeds of tragedy and tyranny, as Bitov’s novel makes explicit, linking this dynamic ultimately with Stalinism. The antidote to endless fear and manipulation of others, Pushkin House suggests, is a personal relationship with God.

The existing fashion houses are on individual basis and struggling to survive and for a more inclusive fashion industry in Aba, the researchers adopted content base analysis, qualitative research method where they carefully analyzed and interpreted works of other authors and used them in buttressing their points as applied to the issue at hand, Aba, Fashion House. Experts in the industry and especially, in Aba, believed that the fashion industry (houses) if properly handled, will hold paramount importance in today’s dynamic world of style and entrepreneurship in the area and will provide a platform for local designers to showcase and give a high end edge to their products and the Nigerian fashion in general. The management of the Aba, fashion industry must find ways to market their products to be accepted both locally and internationally. The idea of shipping their products to Italy and bringing them back to Nigeria to sell must be discouraged. And most importantly, the utilisation of adaptable spaces will allow for flexibility, enabling seamless transitions from workspace to event hosting areas, ensuring the accommodation of fashion shows, exhibitions, and educational workshops and that is how to connect with the rest of the fashion industry world.

Church-owned lands throughout Europe were confiscated by the French over more than two decades between 1790 and 1814. This action, which became a French financial policy during this period, has been much discussed. We know about the processes undertaken for the transaction of such large-scale sell-offs; we are also familiar with the types of buyers involved in a given region; and we understand the economic results of these sales. However, we have little or no information about what happened to these properties and their owners following the defeat of Napoleon. This article discusses the consequences of land confiscation during the French Revolution and how uniquely the Papal States dealt with problems in relation to the rest of Europe. While most of the affected continent was content to move on and validate the private commercial transactions that had taken place, the papacy, with its hybrid form of government—half-church, half-state—challenged many of these transactions. Former ecclesiastical owners of such lands contested the validity of these sales, mainly purchased by members of the bourgeoisie or the aristocracy. These legal quarrels were acrimonious and created division within the Papal States, the consequences of which have never been considered.

AbstractObjective:Many cancer patients report changes in how they experience meaning in life and being confronted with life's limitations, understanding themselves as being vulnerable, finite, and free beings. Many would like to receive psychotherapeutic help for this. However, psychotherapy for these concerns often either focuses primarily on meaning in life (e.g., meaning-centered/logotherapy) or on existential givens (e.g., supportive–expressive therapy). The relationship between meaning in life and existential givens seems relatively unexplored, and it seems unclear how therapists can integrate them. The present article aims to explore the relationship between meaning and existential givens.Method:Martin Heidegger was a founder of existentialism, inspiring both meaning therapies and supportive–expressive therapies. Therefore, we systematically apply his understanding of these phenomena, elucidated by four elements in his central metaphor of “the house.”Results:(1) Walls: In everyday life, we construct ordinary meanings, like the walls of a house, to protect us from our surroundings, wind, and rain. (2) Surroundings (“existential givens”): Confronted with cancer, the meanings/walls of this house may collapse; people may start seeing their surroundings and understand that they could have built their house at a different location, that is, they understand the broad range of possibilities in life, their responsibility to choose, and the contingency of current meanings. (3) How to design, build, and dwell: People may design, build, and dwell in their house in different ways: they may lock themselves in their house of impermeable “ordinary meanings” and deny the existence of existential surroundings; they may feel overwhelmed by all possibilities and be unable to experience meaning; they may build the house as their true home, use life's possibilities, and listen to their true self by building permeable “existential meanings.” (4). Navigator: People may experience inner guidance to navigate in designing, building, and dwelling in this house.Significance of results:Meaning in life and existential givens are intertwined. Therefore, we suggest that it is necessary for psycho-oncologists to address both. Further clinical validation is required.

One of the seminal works in the African American body of theatre, Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun accurately represents the experiences of African American life in urban centres of the US when segregation was in its last stages. Its portrayal of the black community’s repression is realistic in the themes of limited opportunities and acute poverty. This paper focuses on Hansberry’s accurate rendering of black culture and society in the play and how she penetrates the deception and hypocrisy of segregation that eroded the Black community's confidence in American society (and dream). The paper also attempts to answer the generational question that the younger family in the play faces through the prospect of social mobility. It traces the family’s social and economic journey and explores the possibilities of future Youngers’ escape from ghosts of the past and new harsh realities. The play’s conclusion, with Walter declining the offer to sell the new house, was the Youngers’ resistance to oppression and inequality. It also initiated a new social struggle as the family sought social mobility to live in the new setting.

Matthew Sussman, “Optative Form in Anthony Trollope’s The Small House at Allington” (pp. 485–515) This essay argues that Anthony Trollope is the preeminent novelist of the optative, a term introduced by Andrew Miller that describes how people sharpen their sense of self through counterfactual speculations about themselves and others. The optative shapes Trollope’s novels in two ways: first, as the main determinant of character psychology and behavior; and second, as a structural principle that governs his handling of the multiplot novel. Through an analysis of The Small House at Allington (1864)—the first of Trollope’s novels in which the plot is fully motivated by psychological characterization—I show how Trollope adopts narrative strategies of fragmentation and development to distribute optative motifs across the character-space, in effect replicating at the level of structure what takes place within individual minds. In this way, Trollope finds formal means for staging the contest between freedom and contingency in the construction of the self, significantly advancing the character-plot debate of the 1860s and deepening the moral purpose of his realism.

This article focuses on the massive house searches and house arrests that occurred during the state of emergency in France between 2015 and 2017. It draws from critical studies on counterterrorism as well as sociology of the intimate to analyze the aftermath of these measures on the Muslim households that experienced these procedures without being sentenced afterward. It examines how house arrests and searches redefine the respondents’ relationships to their domestic space and local environment as these places become spaces of fear, surveillance, discipline, and self-control. The analysis reveals a set of embodied and discursive strategies to prove an innocence that implies a reappropriation of state categories around social integration and the promotion of an acceptable and non-suspect religiosity.

Purpose This study aims to investigate the determinants of homeowners’ planned holding periods. Real estate market is known for displaying buying and selling behavior that does not conform to traditional economic theories such as rational expectation or expected utility. Mounting evidence of anomalous observations appear to be supported by other theories, such as prospect theory, which in particular helps explain the disposition effect – sellers are too quick to sell when prices are climbing and hold on to properties longer when prices are plummeting. While this evidence is widely documented in housing studies based on data on realized holding periods (i.e. ex post), this study explores factors that may motivate homeowners to alter their expected holding horizons (i.e. ex ante) to form new preferred holding periods that may be shorter or longer than those planned during house search. Design/methodology/approach The empirical study uses data collected from two cross-section surveys of recent homebuyers in rising and declining housing markets in Southern California in 2004-2005 and 2007-2008, respectively. Findings The empirical results demonstrate that in addition to the financial characteristics of the recent homebuyer, the characteristics of the buying experience – non-monetary, such as the realized search duration, and monetary, such as perception of negative or positive premium paid for the house relative to its market value – have a statistically significant effect on the holding horizon revision. The data strongly indicate that the perception of having overpaid increases the likelihood of upward revision of the original holding horizon. This effect is stronger in the declining than in the rising market – a crucial finding that mirrors the disposition effect. Originality/value This study sheds new light on what may contribute to the disposition effect in housing markets that has not yet been investigated in past literature. The novel approach here is to look at how different house price environments may affect homeowners’ holding periods ex ante when they begin, rather than ex post when already realized.

Abstract In October 2015 the Zambian president broke ground on a new National House of Prayer, a building project meant to reaffirm the country's status as Africa's only self-proclaimed “Christian nation.” Over the next four years architects produced three separate sets of plans for the House of Prayer, images of which were circulated among Zambian Christians, primarily church leaders. Each set of plans has provoked conversations about what the House of Prayer should look like. This article shows how discussions of the building's aesthetic features were connected to the theological-political possibilities of Christian nationalism, crystalizing around two competing models of how to go about making Zambia a (more) Christian nation. By tracing the tension between these models through architectural and aesthetic debates, this article shows the link between images and the theological-political imagination. It therefore builds on anthropological analyses of other parts of the world that have emphasized the political power of aesthetics as more than representations of already existing ideas—that is, as an ideologically and politically productive force in its own right.

This study utilizes textual analysis to analyze how journalists are depicted on the Netflix drama House of Cards. Through the lens of orientalism and cultivation, researchers examine how depictions of print and digital journalism would lead viewers to see digital journalists as less ethical and driven by self-gain, while also viewing technology as an impediment to quality journalism. These findings are then discussed as a means for understanding how these depictions could affect society.

Abstract How can an economic model designed to eliminate waste produce nothing but? The answer, according to Samuel Beckett's Watt, can be found in the system of economic relations presupposed by the Anglo-Irish Big House novels that emerged after the 1800 Acts of Union. These novels, which contrasted the profligacy and neglect of absentee English landlords with the idealized social harmony and economic self-sufficiency of the homegrown Protestant Ascendency, allowed an Anglo-Irish readership to imagine a self-sustaining body politic, invulnerable to an unevenly developed empire's devastating cycles of scarcity and waste. The Big House in Watt is the estate of Mr. Knott, to which apparently “nothing could be added . . . and from it nothing taken away.” As his servant Watt discovers, however, the high quality of life inside the home is ensured by the continual production and export of detritus: human waste, leftover food, and pointless activity. The even-keeled manor house, moreover, lays waste to an ever-expanding network of territory and labor to feed itself. Drawing attention to the novelist's engagement with contemporary Irish economic policy, this essay shows how Beckett exploits the weaknesses of this model of national political economy to dismantle the form of the novel itself: Watt produces its own unassimilable waste in the form of aimless digressions and addenda. Rather than discard the exhausted form, as critical tradition would have it, Beckett releases his Big House novel to explore the exogenous play of wasteful contradictions and to overturn the genre's ideal equilibrium.

One of the common themes in contemporary Persian literature in Iran is the psychological development of women and their challenges to find their path towards individuality. By applying Jungian “process of individuation,” Fariba Vafi’s novel My bird is analyzed to uncover the self- development of the female character. The motion of self-archetype is studied in relation to Jung’s theory of individuality to study how the female protagonist experiences this process of personality development. The motif of re-birth emerges at the end of the novel when the female heroine reaches a level of recognition of the changes occurring within her. Other archetypal motifs that appear in the novel are the house archetype, the shadow archetype, and the individuation archetype which are discussed as they are the main structuring elements in the formation of the theme of the novel. This research aims to study how the psychological development of the female protagonist, based on Jung’s archetypal theories, occurs. Keywords: Jung’s archetypes, shadow archetype, house archetype, individuation archetype.

‘How is it that your countrymen steal our gods?’ asked a Brahmin of the Baptist missionary, John Chamberlain who noted the details of this conversation in his diary on 20 November 1817 (Davis 1997: 164):‘Sir, a gentleman whose name I do not remember, came to me to let him take the image of Lukshinee away, which stood on the point where the river and rivulet meet; and he said he would give me a sum of money if I could consent to it. I told him that I could not take any money for it; that she was worshipped by all the people around, and that several times a year the people assembled from the country at a distance to see the goddess, and to bathe: at which time much was offered to her’. The gentleman persisted. He returned four or five times, offered ample remuneration and even took the brahmin by boat to see the assemblage of gods in his Calcutta house, but still the brahmin refused to sell. Finally, the gentleman ‘got his people together, and took away the goddess by night. There the tree stands, Sir, but the goddess is gone!’

This research is entitled Study of Sharia Compliance in Public Housing Loan Products (KPR) with Murabahah Agreement at Bank Sumut, Medan Sharia Branch Office. Shariah Compliance can simply be interpreted as a form of obedience carried out by Islamic banks in fulfilling existing sharia principles in all aspects of their operational activities. This is the difference between Islamic banks and conventional banks.People's Housing Credit (KPR) is a facility provided by banks to customers who wish to have a place to live (home). In general, mortgages in Islamic banks use a lot of murabahah contracts. Murabahah itself means a sale and purchase agreement made between two parties, namely the bank and the customer. Which is where the Islamic bank will buy the house that the customer wants and then sell it to the customer at a cost plus a profit margin that has been mutually agreed upon. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative. Data obtained from the results of observations and documentation on the bank directly. This study aims to see how to provide Murabahah mortgage financing and the extent of sharia compliance with Murabahah mortgage products at Bank Sumut Syariah Medan Branch Office.

Francis Dixon Lodge is a therapeutic community in Leicester with a capacity for up to 15 residents. The Lodge also runs a day and out-patient service. The residential programme runs from Monday to Friday (with residents returning home at weekends), and comprises twice daily community meetings, twice weekly small group psychotherapy sessions, a once weekly art therapy group and a once weekly care-planning group. There is also structured time for recreational activities, housekeeping tasks and involvement in assessment of referrals. In addition to planned groups, a crisis meeting can be called at any time by any community member who feels they or another member are struggling in some way. This involves calling on the community to think about how to manage the situation, and is the way that therapeutic communities challenge impulsive behaviours. Individuals may not be at a stage where they feel able to manage their feelings at the time and are likely to ‘act out’ in self-destructive ways, but others around them may be able to offer advice and support. With time, it is hoped that they are able to develop more elastic impulse control (Campling, 2001).
