Streszczenie:
This study is librarian analysis which collects the data from books and journal articles. Those articles and books chapters discuss about introductions in terms of their generic structures. The data collections were applied by reading, taking notes for their generic structures, and analyzing them in term of their generic structure models. Then, the data were reported using qualitative approach by describing their patterns. The results showed that there two big categories for their models, involving pattern models and free models. Pattern models dominated in this study because they have been applied seven experts, while free models have been applied by only two people. Therefore, this study suggests that if the journal, which you direct to publish your articles, doesn’t have pattern, you are recommended to apply the patterns as the following: CARS model from Swales, IPS model from Adnan (2011), Slatcher & Pennebaker, and Ball & Vincent.

Deep learning has significantly boosted the performance improvement of automatic speech recognition (ASR) with the cooperation of large amounts of data resources. For minority languages, however, there are almost no large-scale data resources, limiting the development of ASR technologies in these languages. In this paper, we publish a free Kirghiz speech database accompanied by associated language resources. The entire database involves 128 h of speech data from 163 speakers and corresponding transcriptions. To our knowledge, this is the largest Kirghiz speech database that is dedicated to the ASR task and is publicly free so far. In addition, we also provide several baseline systems based on Kaldi and WeNet to demonstrate how these public data resources can be used to facilitate the Kirghiz ASR research. This publication is a part of the M2ASR project, and all the resources can be downloaded at the project webpage.

The study of digital comics is normally focused on their innovations in languages and aesthetics: from modes and medium-specific features to forms and qualifying features of webcomics and digitalized comics. The definition of digital comics has been studied from the beginning of their appearance, and so has the relationship between digital works and readers. However, in addition to digital comics’ intrinsic characteristics, it is equally important to understand how these productions are published and promoted on the two main contexts used by digital graphic narratives: personal websites and social media platforms. Many creators have decided to publish their production almost entirely online, for free, before or after a printed version of their works. How do they build their audience? How do they improve engagement? How do they act in the digital landscape?

A free and open press (unincumbered by political pressures) is necessary to hold government officials accountable. When governments become entangled in the business of licensing and regulating news outlets, news outlets succumb to the pressures of only publishing stories favorable to the current regime. The temptation to publish negative stories could result in losing one’s publishing license. This scenario has been playing out in Venezuela for the past two decades and has led to a media culture of misinformation, confusion, and propaganda. This paper first analyzes the Venezuelan view on the influential forces on its government through the International Social Survey Programme (ISSP). Second, it explores how the Venezuelan government vanquished the free press by affecting the Venezuelan citizens’ attitudes towards the press. Finally, it reviews how the internet and social media are creating new avenues for publishing uncensored and unregulated information in an effort to challenge current government restrictions.

In 2003 the Danish government reformed universities to 'set them free' from the state. Yet ministers are actively trying to shape universities and even set research agendas. How does the government's notion of 'freedom' reconcile independence with control? We identify three discourses of freedom: freedom to use academic judgement over what to research, teach, publish and say publicly; a free trade discourse where universities are free to pursue profit; and a modernising state discourse where government steers universities to contribute to the knowledge economy. Danish universities were reformed as part of the modernisation of the welfare state. We explore the assemblage of administrative and funding mechanisms through which the government now steers independent organisations: a chain of contracts for outsourced services, newly appointed managers, output payments and accrual accounting. While responsibility for achieving government policy is passed downwards through the independent organisation, formal lines of accountability run back up to the government. University leaders and academics are set free to manoeuvre within the system, but their economic survival is firmly dependent on responsiveness to centralised steering mechanisms

The May 2020 killing of George Floyd and the public’s outcry has sparked a response from many higher education institutions to publish anti-racist statements. On the surface, these statements may seem genuine, but the bureaucratic governance structure of higher education may impede any change efforts. This paper discusses the challenges facing higher education in creating an institution free of racist policies and ideologies. This includes analyzing practices, policies, and values that are not consistent with creating an inclusive educational culture. Equally important is the need to understand the best approach to engage in a productive and honest intellectual dialogue to facilitate change. The article concludes by examining the governance structure and ideas on how higher education can move toward sustainable, meaningful change.

Today, to publish an academic paper requires experience not only in ‘doing’ the research itself but understanding how it is made available online or in print. This study, an excerpt, has profiled websites and journal articles indexed from the Directory of Open Access Journals during mid-2020 in the field of Science Education, with the end in mind of proposing a publication management model for beginning ‘authors’. Using an exploratory mixed method design, this excerpt of the study extracted 185 corpus websites and 103 corpus journal articles from more than 5 million article records of DOAJ. Findings revealed that United States topped the countries with the highest number of corpus and that majority of these journals not charge submission or article processing charges from authors, yet content crawling was observed in most of the journals. Analysis of corpus articles reported sub-sections consistently included in their submission indicative of an international pattern among accepted articles. Recommendations included the proposal to develop a publication management model for beginning ‘authors’ in state universities and colleges in the Philippines.

Streszczenie:
The EU is faced with problems related to the unrestricted access to national welfare states of mobile EU workers. These problems are mainly framed by the growing opposition to the free movement of workers. The strongest contributing factor to these negative attitudes has commonly said to be actor-based, i.e. the media or political elites. However, more recent research has been shifting the focus to institutions as explanatory factor. I raise the question of to what extent individuals’ attitudes towards the free movement of workers are associated with their exposure to different welfare state institutional contexts. More specifically I explore the role of “earnings-relatedness” in specific social insurances for the attitudes of potential benefit claimants. Analyzing 12 EU/EFTA countries who are net receivers of mobile EU workers I find that in welfare state contexts with a high degree of earnings-relatedness the opposition to free movement is significantly lower than otherwise among the unemployed. Furthermore, I discover that these observations seem to vary depending on what part of the social insurance system one is analyzing.

Streszczenie:
In an attempt to identify motivating factors involved in decisions to publish in Open Access (OA) journals, individual interviews with biomedical faculty members at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, a major research university, were conducted. The interviews focused on faculty identified as early adopters of OA/free full-text publishing. Searches conducted in PubMed and PubMed Central identified faculty from UNC-Chapel Hill who have published works in OA/free full-text journals. The searches targeted authors with multiple OA citations during a specified 18 month period. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with the most prolific OA authors. Individual interviews attempted to determine whether the authors were aware they published in OA journals, why they chose to publish in OA journals, what factors influenced their publishing decisions, and their general attitude towards OA publishing models. Interview questions were based on a review of the literature and consultation with a scholarly communication working group. The interview results were analyzed to see whether these faculty members made conscious efforts to publish in OA/free full-text journals, and if so why.

The goal with this project was to convert open structured data, e.g. csv-files, to Linked Open Data and to demonstrate possible uses of such data. The project was also supposed to inspire and lay a foundation for future work in the area. The conversion was done using the D2RQ platform, and the chosen dataset contains air quality measurements from Umeå Municipality. The resulting data was then published on the internet with D2R server. For demonstration purposes two tasks were done. A visualization of the converted data was published on the web, together with traffic and weather data. Secondly a physical city model was built of carton with eight photodiodes, a Raspberry Pi and visualized with a local webserver. The goals for the project were fulfilled and it has also inspired Knowit to continue with commercial projects in the area of Linked Open Data. Future effort should be put in converting more data to Linked Open Data and to create full scale sensor networks in a city.

Thesis (Ph. D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sloan School of Management, 2004.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 185-193).
This dissertation evaluates the extent to which temporary work enables or constrains workers' careers, by moving beyond a polarized image of contingent employment as "free agency" versus "exploitation." I argue that, in order to comprehend this phenomenon, we need to acknowledge and understand the triadic structure of contingent labor markets, in which transactions between workers and firms are mediated by intermediary organizations. The thesis shows that the triadic system of relationships in which intermediaries are embedded contributes to shape market processes, by significantly influencing prices, wages and other individual career outcomes. I combine in-depth statistical analyses of a unique dataset of job histories and client data from a specialized staffing firm with interviews among high-skill contractors in the creative information technology sector (web designers, programmers, etc.). The dissertation is organized into three papers that provide distinct insights on different aspects of the triadic labor market context, yet all of them focus on the relational processes that underlie this phenomenon. The first paper shows that the nature of the staffing agency's inter-organizational relationships with clients has significant consequences for price and wage determination. The second paper focuses on the relationships between the staffing agency and its contractors, by showing the existence of tenure premiums in this agency and explaining its causes. Finally, the last paper presents a qualitative study of how workers perceive and experience triadic employment relationships. This dissertation's findings contribute to the literature on contingent employment by providing a nuanced picture of this phenomenon, as well as by showing that
(cont.) intermediaries are not simply neutral devices that companies use to increase flexibility. In fact, the triadic configuration of externalized labor markets is highly organized and socially structured. My results also contribute to the literature on market mediation, by analyzing brokerage beyond the broker itself and studying its consequences on third parties. They also help open the "black box" of brokerage organizations, uncovering the specific ways in which these affect market outcomes. Finally, these findings contribute to a nascent stream of research in Economic Sociology that analyzes the effects of inter-organizational ties and networks on price determination.

The Free-to-play (F2P) model is the primary business model applied in indie mobile games nowadays. However, the fact that less than 5% of players are paying is still a big problem for developers. There is a theoretical gap in understandings of how to increase revenue without lowering the quality of the game and deliver more valuable and better gaming experience for players. Some assumptions and empirical methods need to be verified. The aim of this research is to understand a series of specific design and development questions of F2P games, including game inner mechanics, game structures, and monetization strategies. We attempted to find consensus between developers and players. In addition, this research also sought to find out how F2P mobile game can provide as a comprehensive service in order. It sought to find a sustainable and profitable business model for each game by integrating monetization organically inside of the game without sacrificing players’ enjoyment. We used a mixed methods research approach, including both interviews and surveys, to examine the opinions and behavior of developers and players based on the Acquisition-Retention-Monetization funnel.

Streszczenie:
Abstract The modem welfare state is characterized by a large public sector and extensive government intervention into the private economy. Its purpose is to achieve a wide range of social objectives-e.g., equal ization of incomes, equal access to certain goods (health care, education), environmentalism ... , etc. Welfare-state programs are manifest in all the Western industrialized nations though they have reached their extreme in the smaller countries of Northern Europe-Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands. During the decades of the 1950s and 1960s, the welfare state and free trade were considered to be complimentary with one another. Free trade bolstered the economic base of the welfare state, which made financing its social consumption and income redistribution programs that much easier. This made sense but could not survive the 1970s. As the economic performance of the welfare state faltered, so did its commitment to free trade. Slowly but surely, the welfare state has evolved into a protectionist state.

This chapter traces where the networked press exists today. Based on a seven-year corpus (2010–2016) of journalistic trade press focused on sociotechnical dynamics, it describes how the networked press' autonomy exists in twelve sociotechnical dynamics: observation, production, alignments, labor, analytics, timing, security, audiences, revenue, facts, resemblances, and affect. It argues that networked press freedom is the story of people and machines coming together and pulling away from often invisible and unacknowledged assumptions about what kind of press publics need. By seeing itself as a set of sociotechnical separations and dependencies, the press may better be able to decide and defend what kinds of publics it can create.

We compared field-normalized citation scores from the freely available bibliographic database OpenAlex with those from three commercial databases (Web of Science, Scopus, and Dimensions). The scores have been calculated for nearly 335,000 publications published by 48 German universities in four OECD subject areas between 2013 and 2017. We found varying but - overall - strong agreement according to Lin's concordance coefficient. We also calculated (aggregated) mean normalized citation scores for the 48 universities and found that the agreements across different databases are low. On the one hand, the results suggest that comparisons of universities using field-normalized citation scores across different databases should be avoided. On the other hand, the difference of the concordance coefficients on the paper and university level is a good example for the problem of ecological fallacy in bibliometrics: The mean impact is not representative for the single papers’ impact in the set.

A new standard for site-specific design of free fall lifeboats has been developed, aiming at providing for sufficiently safe lifeboat designs. The objective has been to develop a standard that follows the same reliability-based safety philosophy and design principles as those implemented and used for design of conventional fixed and floating offshore structures. The standard is intended to cover all aspects involved in the design process for a free fall lifeboat, providing requirements that shall be met in design as well as guidance on how to meet these requirements. The following aspects are covered: Safety philosophy and design principles, metocean conditions, loads, materials, structural design, operational requirements, occupant safety and comfort, model testing and full scale testing, installation, equipment, and qualification of lifeboat concepts. The new standard is published both as an OLF Guideline by the Norwegian Oil Industry Association OLF and as a DNV Offshore Standard, DNV-OS-E406, by Det Norske Veritas. The paper presents the highlights of the new standard with emphasis on topics which are critical for design of free fall lifeboats, first of all structural safety, human safety and comfort, and headway.

There is no doubt that digital literacy and the increasing use of the Internet are making economies more productive. The free flow of information and the ease with which it can be accessed means that information sources such as the Internet have a great influence on the formation of public opinion and the making of individual decisions. The article investigates how the use of the Internet and the trust Serbian citizens show towards state institutions are connected. For this purpose, data from The European Social Survey (ESS) were used, in which more than 3,500 residents of Serbia were surveyed and the attitudes of Internet users towards the state of the economy, democracy, the work of the national government, the education and health system, as well as trust in the legal system and the police were examined. Respondents were categorized according to the frequency of Internet use, age and gender. The results of the descriptive statistical analysis showed that the more often they use the Internet, the less trust residents have in the state. If we consider that young people spend the most time on the Internet, it is easy to assume that losing trust in institutions and responsible people can have very negative long-term consequences for the entire society.

Abstract Composite materials are being investigated in advanced technology test beds for use in future armored vehicles. We are particularly interested in the response to impulsive loading for which the knowledge of natural frequency behavior is important. In this paper, we investigate the natural frequency analysis capabilities of the multilayered shell element of the ADINA finite element code as applied to laminated composite beams and plates. Results are compared to those published in the literature or those derived from exact solutions. The ADINA shell element employs a first-order shear deformation theory, and the results are found to agree well with other first-order theories. Although ADINA does not allow for a direct method of incorporating a shear correction factor commonly used in first-order theories, it is demonstrated how this can be included by modifying the material properties.

Streszczenie:
With over 40,000 studies published, omega-3s are among most studied compounds in all of biology. We know a great deal about their metabolism, genetics, and nutrition that has not been translated into the global industrial food system. Development and maintenance of the human and general neural function depends on a balanced nutritional supply of omega-6 and omega-3 PUFA. Omega-3s are the most labile of oil components, leading to rancidity during processing and limiting shelf-life. Recent research has clarified the roles of the human FADS1 and FADS2 genes as key to conversion of precursor alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) to bioactive products eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid ((DHA). FADS2 is a promiscuous desaturase enzyme that inserts double bonds at the 4, 6, and 8 positions and acts on at least 16 substrates including numerous saturated fatty acids, while FADS1 is highly specific to 5 desaturation and C20 substrates. FADS gene polymorphisms lead primarily to modulation of circulating arachidonic acid in free living humans, which is likely to influence omega-3 requirements through biochemical competition at many levels. Natural, pre-industrial diets are high in saturated and monounsaturated fats, and supply dietary essential fatty acids at less than 4% of calories. Such diets support endogenous EPA and DHA biosynthesis at relatively robust levels, while diets high in PUFA inhibit EPA/DHA tissue accretion and create a metabolic demand. Recent recommendations focus on gently processed healthy foods rich in shortfall nutrients despite high saturated fat content have been advanced. Dietary intake of EPA and DHA have effects specific to each fatty acid, and both are more efficiently incorporated into tissue than when derived from precursors. Current evidence is that both are required for optimal health.

<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">This study assessed a driver’s ability to safely manage Super Cruise lane changes, both driver commanded (Lane Change on Demand, LCoD) and system triggered Automatic Lane Changes (ALC). Data was gathered under naturalistic conditions on public roads in the Washington, D.C. area with 12 drivers each of whom were provided with a Super Cruise equipped study vehicle over a 10-day exposure period. Drivers were shown how to operate Super Cruise (e.g., system displays, how to activate and disengage, etc.) and provided opportunities to initiate and experience commanded lane changes (LCoD), including how to override the system. Overall, drivers experienced 698 attempted Super Cruise lane changes, 510 Automatic and 188 commanded LCoD lane changes with drivers experiencing an average of 43 Automatic lane changes and 16 LCoD lane changes. Analyses characterized driver interactions during LCoD and ALC maneuvers exploring the extent to which drivers actively monitor the process and remain engaged and alert relative to manually executed lane changes (e.g., mirror checks, interventions, etc.). Results found evidence to suggest that drivers remain vigilant during Super Cruise automated lane changes, both when driver commanded LCOD (LCoD) and when executed automatically. Further, search behavior persisted over time and with experience; drivers were observed to search mirrors or make direct Over-the-Shoulder glances for nearly all executed lane changes, both under Super Cruise or Manual driving modes. No significant differences were found regarding either the duration or number of check glances across Super Cruise or manually executed lane changes. While drivers remained attentive during lane changes operating under a partial automated driving system, additional longer-term studies may be helpful to reinforce these findings that these safety behaviors persist after significant experience and usage.</div></div>

Tyson, Paul. Orchestrated Irrationality: Why It Exists and How It Might Be Resisted. Mέta | Centre for Postcapitalist Civilisation, maj 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.55405/mwp13en.

Streszczenie:
Orchestrated irrationality in our public discourse is produced by technologically enhanced and commercially purposed atomization and tribalism. Public discourse now leans away from a humane, free, and reasoned political rationality and towards self-interested, calculative, herd conformism. The bulls and bears of consumer society have largely displaced the civic logic of the liberal democratic pursuit of the common good. The power interests that govern global consumerism are enhanced by subordinating the common good ends of genuinely political life to the self-interested and profit driven dynamics of the market. Orchestrated irrationality in our public discourse makes politics into a meaningless theatre of incommensurate tribal interest narratives, which is a convenient distraction from the collaborative consolidation of market power and state control. This orchestrated irrationality can only be combatted by seeking to de-atomize citizens and de-tribalize the public square in order to recover the priority of political life over market and authoritarian power in our public discourse. That is, a postcapitalist civilization that is oriented to a genuinely political and universally moral rationality must replace the present global order. Once we can identify the problem and the direction of cure for orchestrated irrationality, we can then take steps towards a different civilizational life-world.

Streszczenie:
In 2021, California committed to providing universal prekindergarten (UPK) for all 4-year-olds and income-eligible 3-year-olds by 2025–26. UPK includes several early learning programs, including transitional kindergarten (TK), the California State Preschool Program (CSPP), Head Start, and expanded learning opportunities to provide full-day early learning and care. TK is the only UPK program that is free and universally available as part of California’s public education system. Offered by local education agencies (LEAs), TK currently serves all 4-year-olds who turn 5 between September 2 and December 2 and will expand to all 4-year-olds by 2025–26. The legislature also made new investments in CSPP, a program for income-eligible 3- and 4-year-old children. Funding for CSPP is provided by the state through grants to both LEAs and community-based organizations. This report provides a snapshot of 1,108 LEAs’ initial plans for UPK expansion through the analysis of a survey administered by the California Department of Education in August 2022. Key findings provide insights into LEA plans for service delivery models, facilities and transportation, instruction and assessment, workforce development, school leader development, and technical assistance needs.

The relationship between health and employment status continually shows that individuals who work have lower levels of illness and higher self-reported health. This study examines how self-reported health and objective measures of health (multimorbidity and mental health problems) differ across employment status and occupations among adults of working age (25-65 years). In addition, the study examines how public health coverage – medical card and GP visit card (GPVC) – and private health coverage (PHI), and lack thereof, differ across occupations. Overall, individuals not in employment have much lower rates of self-reported health and higher rates of illness. In particular, mental health problems are three times higher among unemployed individuals across all age groups. Examining workers separately, differences in health status across occupations are small. However, rates of health coverage differ considerably across occupations. In general, occupations associated with poorer health status tend to have the highest percentages of workers without a medical card/GPVC or PHI. This affects workers’ ability to access lower cost or free healthcare, including for the purpose of certified sick leave.

Policy responses to the Covid-19 pandemic in the global South were dominated by movement restrictions and lockdowns imposed in the global North, and not always relevant to the countries or geographical areas where they were imposed. Countries must be free to decide how to manage a global crisis, so their governments can take decisions that are in the best interests of their citizens, with specific reference to the poorest people, whose lives are already challenging. Many countries’ political and public finance systems could not support mitigating measures to compensate the effects of the lockdowns and restrictions. Such measures rarely made up for the job losses, income reduction and erosion of social capital caused by closing economies. They also rarely reached some of the groups most affected – including those in the urban informal economy, poor migrants and poor women.

This report outlines the results from the research project Food for Urban Life and Localities (FULL) funded by Formas (2020-02864). The research set out to learn how COVID-19 response strategies in six cities (Stockholm, London, Wuhan, Singapore, Sydney, and Seoul) have facilitated access to food for vulnerable groups and how new food supply solutions have emerged through social and technological innovations. This report presents the case of each city in turn and pauses on the role of community-based organisations, ad- hoc community initiatives and municipalities during the COVID-19 pandemic. The report provides a detailed discussion of local or community-level responses in cities that aim to provide access to food through social and/or technological innovations. The lessons learned are important for the Swedish context in the case of similar events that challenge local access to food. The research collected data through qualitative and quantitative methods, and also made use of the breadth of online data sources in response to COVID-19 restrictions on free movement and travelling. The overall finding is that in situations such as the COVID-19 pandemic, local access to food is extremely challenging and cannot be addressed by existing welfare or state arrangements only;civil society organisations and voluntary community organizations (VCOs) step in to fill the gap in public provision; and the stricter the lockdown, the more dependent on civil society response urban areas and communities were.

There is little available evidence on how schools implement the School Food Standards. To address this, the Department for Education and the Food Standards Agency with support from the Office of Health Improvement and Disparities commissioned this research to support the School Food Standards Compliance Pilot. The purpose of this pilot was to test if Food Safety Officers could carry out a School Food Standards check to identify potential non-compliance with the School Food Standards alongside food hygiene inspections. The pilot launched in September 2022 across 18 local authorities and the FSA has published two reports on the findings: School Food Standards Compliance Pilot: Discovery Research - this report focuses on the findings of the pre-pilot phase, the ‘Discovery Phase’, that ran from June to August 2022. School Food Standards Compliance Pilot: Feasibility Research - this report focuses on the findings of the second phase of the pilot known as ‘Feasibility Study Phase 1'. Research is currently underway to explore the feasibility of an updated pilot design known as ‘Feasibility Study Phase 2.’ This report will be published in Spring 2024.
