The relationship between people and their home environment has always been an important research theme. Cooperative works of different disciplines and research areas, such as environmental psychology, social psychology, community psychology, home environment studies, urban planning and architecture have developed an understanding of relationships between quality and residential spaces. In this study an attempt has been made to analyze quality issues in housing environments by providing a general review related to quality housing research and by establishing a model that can be used to evaluate the concept of quality in housing. Focusing on a specific housing settlement as a case study, the goal here is to open a debate based on design concepts and their social and spatial consequences in architecture and to provide important data for future housing projects in Turkey. In the scope of the work, the Belerko Housing Settlement in the City of Trabzon has been selected as a research area. Aim of the study is to develop an understanding of the social, psychological and the physical characteristics that contribute to spatial quality in this specific housing environment.

The higher demand of higher-density housing in Bangkok due to the rapid growth of the economy and the use of high-performance materials and modern construction methods has changed the forms of housing from low-rise buildings to multistorey apartments. During the last two decades, people in Bangkok have faced problems of living in high-density housing and lack of open space, which limit the quality of living space. Providing better quality of living space above ground must therefore be considered. Terrace housing, that is multi-story housing with open spaces on each level, is a building type which has the advantage of providing the qualities of private open spaces to each unit of building. Terrace building types have been a popular solution to modern housing design for quality in multi-story aj-jartment buildings. There is a great variety of this building type: roof top, hillside, on ground free standing terrace, vertical stack, courtyard terrace, artificial hill terrace and cluster terrace. The main purpose is to provide compensation of living quality on the ground to individual units and common area in the air. Terrace buildings also respond well to their environment. However, terrace buildings require many special architectural and technical considerations. A study of this building type will help to clarify the design and technical considerations of terrace housing design and provide design alternatives for better living conditions city. The work deals with terrace houses on flat sites in the city of Bangkok on two main contextual levels. 1. General level; Guidelines for off-ground terrace buildings are described by means of the specific components of the building types which are generated by internal requirements and external conditions (such as spatial requirements, climates and urban contexts ). 2. Specific Level; This level is based on practical considerations of the process of representing a terrace building. Prototypical forms of terrace housing will be matched with quality of housing and technological systems. The results provide suggestions for the design of this building type and a selected design alternative.

The motivation of the public sector is more social and political. The housing crisis is a major political issue for every ruling party. In many countries there are political commitments to housing, but sadly we witness this commitment being misdirected. Every government wants to see that its citizens are housed adequately. Very often it is seen that in its endeavour, government try to follow the private sector process, establishing huge parastatals to carry out the whole process, for example design, construction and financing (Lankatilleke, 1994). Lankatilleke, L. (1994) further mentions that mass produced public sector housing schemes are aesthetic disasters. They are either rows of match-boxes or high-rise blocks with no identity or individuality. There are numerous examples of such housing schemes that have deteriorated into ghettos. This research consequently presents findings which implies that government is being pressurized by the housing backlog within the Western and Eastern Cape, which brings about time constraints and tight budgets. These pressures are transferred to the design teams which need to speedily produce designs for low-cost housing homes within the best possible budget. This results to the implementation of common model designs. It is also founded that contractors ultimately suffer, due to these pressures which do not allow them to produce good quality homes. It is therefore recommended that better community involvement for sustainable methods in the design and construction process should be practiced. This therefore concludes that government should take more responsibility for the delivery processes of low-cost housing as well as the procurement and quality systems to be followed.

A wealth of studies has demonstrated the significance of adequate or quality housing on occupant’s productivity, performance, comfort and health. However, insufficient data on the conditions of existing housing stocks and a lack of consensus measures of housing quality hinder housing developments from achieving residential needs. Due to the lack of quality indicators, the quality of housing is not often assessed. Therefore, this paper presents a systematic review using the PRISMA protocol to provide an overview of the housing quality indicators that can be employed to evaluate housing quality. The review consisted of 62 studies investigating 66 housing quality indicators. Each fall into one of eight categories, namely 1) dwelling unit architectural design characteristics and features; 2) user comfort; 3) housing site location and neighbourhood; 4) building services; 5) construction quality and stability; 6) economic aspect; 7) building maintenance; or 8) sustainability. The results show that investigating housing quality indicators is a growing research field where adequate ventilation was the most critical indicator of a quality home. Since the identified indicators are essential determinants of a quality house, architects and engineers can integrate these features at the design and construction stages in upgrading the conditions of dwellings while satisfying occupant’s comfort and quality of life. Further, governments can develop housing quality standards or regulations using these indicators to improve the quality of new housing constructions.

Findings in the literature suggest that the sudden and often massive nature of refugee inflows, combined with the fact that housing supply is mostly unresponsive in the short-term, has the potential to affect housing prices and generate substantial changes in housing preferences, neighborhood quality/amenities, mobility patterns of hosts, and attitudes toward refugees in receiving areas. The interaction between the location preferences of refugees and the actions taken by hosts in response to refugee inflows may lead to residential segregation, urban poverty, high economic inequality, and unsustainable cities in the long-term. More people than ever are living in cities, and in these cities, more and more people are living alone. Using the example of Vienna, this paper investigates the subjective well-being of single households in the city. Previous research has identified positive and negative aspects of living alone (e.g., increased freedom vs. missing social embeddedness). We compare single households with other household types using data from the Viennese Quality of Life Survey (1995–2018). In our analysis, we consider overall life satisfaction as well as selected dimensions of subjective wellbeing (i.e., housing, financial situation, main activity, family, social contacts, leisure time). Our findings show that the subjective well-being of single households in Vienna is high and quite stable over time. While single households are found to have lower life satisfaction than two-adult households, this result is mainly explained by singles reporting lower satisfaction with family life. Compared to households with children, singles are more satisfied with their financial situation, leisure time and housing, which helps to offset the negative consequences of missing family ties (in particular with regard to single parents).
