Streszczenie:
Housing is often described as an important determinant of health, but less commonly of child health. Despite acknowledgment of the importance of housing to health, however, there are relatively few studies of the effects of housing interventions on health, and again even fewer on child health. This article argues that a broad focus on healthy child development—as opposed to just physical health—coupled with a conceptual framework outlining specific attributes of housing with the potential to influence child health, should be adopted to guide a comprehensive approach to public health policy for healthy child development. Most housing interventions address direct pathways linking in-home hazard exposures to child health outcomes, with promising but mixed results. But few housing interventions address the broader aspects of healthy child development. This review addresses potential housing interventions that could impact the broader determinants of healthy child development and accompanying methodological challenges.

Streszczenie:
PurposeTo consolidate and review current literature that relates children's health to their housing and living environments.Design/methodology/approachA range of published sources which review the relationship between children, housing and health. The sources consolidate research that applies specifically to children and their domestic situation. The paper also reviews literature around municipal tower block estates and the unique health/architecture relationship before turning to children living in temporary bed and breakfast accommodation. An overview of current public health policy that seeks to reintegrate housing and well‐being is undertaken.FindingsDecent housing lies at the heart of health for all. Generally, the picture is more positive, but action remains slow. Children's needs must be given a higher priority in housing in future to promote physical and emotional well‐being.Research limitations/implicationsIt is not an exhaustive list and the sources are mainly UK publications.Practical implicationsThe UK approach to children, housing and health may be of interest to a number of overseas countries in Eastern Europe, Africa and Asia.Originality/valueThis paper fulfils an identified information/resources need and offers readers such as students, academics and practitioners an overview of the UK approach.

We investigate the impact of a large-scale Mexican program to replace dirt floors with cement floors on child health and adult happiness. We find that replacing dirt floors with cement significantly improves the health of young children measured by decreases in the incidence of parasitic infestations, diarrhea, and the prevalence of anemia, and an improvement in children's cognitive development. Additionally, we find significant improvements in adult welfare measured by increased satisfaction with their housing and quality of life, as well as by lower scores on depression and perceived stress scales. Streszczenie:
A large body of literature shows the link between inadequate housing conditions and poor physical and mental health. The aim of this paper is to summarize the research on the impact of local housing policies on health inequalities, focusing on the issues of access to housing and fuel poverty as studied in the SOPHIE project. Our case studies in Spain showed that people facing housing insecurity, experienced intense levels of mental distress. We found that access to secure and adequate housing can improve the health of these populations, therefore, public policies that address housing instability and their consequences are urgently needed. Housing conditions related to fuel poverty are associated with poorer health and are unevenly distributed across Europe. We found possible positive effects of façade insulation interventions on cold-related mortality in women living in social housing; but not in men. Policies on housing energy efficiency can reduce the health consequences of fuel poverty, but need to be free to users, target the most vulnerable groups and be adaptable to their needs.

Streszczenie:
Abstract Older immigrants comprised 14% of the US older population, which is predicted to continue to rise. Despite the importance of ethnic attachment in older immigrants’ well-being, little is known how ethnically homogeneous housing environment affect older adults’ health. This study aims to fill the gaps in knowledge on low-income older immigrants living in subsidized senior housing and to explore the associations between immigrant status, senior housing environments, and self-rated health among this population. Our survey data was collected from 18 subsidized senior housing communities in IL, MO, and NH (N=459). Bilingual surveyors fluent in Chinese, Russian, and Korean were also available for the participants with limited English proficiency as the sampled housings were the multi-ethnicity properties. Hierarchical Linear Modeling was employed for our analysis to address our participants were clustered within senior housing.More than a half (56%) of our sample lived in ethnically homogeneous senior housing (either all immigrants or all non-immigrants). Immigrants consist of 53% of our sample, and 48% of them lived in ethnically homogeneous housing. Our finding showed that immigrants were more likely to report low level of self-rated health (OR=0.885, p< 0.01). However, ethnically homogeneous senior housing environments positively influence the association between immigrant status and self-rated health (OR=1.219, p<.05).This study highlights the importance of ethnically homogeneous living environment for low-income older immigrants in senior housing. Although ethnic diversity may be beneficial in broader society, concentration of ethnic minority older immigrants could play an important role in terms of social support and service delivery.
