When a conflict breaks out and whenever it is possible, foreign media workers travelling to cover it congregate in the same hotel to live and to work. This is where they cross paths with other protagonists of the conflict, thus converting this space into a site of strategic importance to the overall conduct of warfare. As the architectures from which conflicts are observed, analysed, discussed, and enunciated, ‘war hotels’ must be understood as playing an active role in the framing of conflicts: both the ways they are publically represented and the ways that we in turn see them unfold. Despite extended research into the mediatisation of conflict, little is known about the role of ‘war hotels’ as a crucial staging ground for the production of these representations. Through practice-led research, writing, and the making of a feature-length film, the past and present role of the phenomena of war hotels is examined in detail. While the film creates spatial and temporal conflations to depict what is, in effect, a non-specific meta-war hotel in a post-conflict environment, the written portion of the dissertation proceeds from an analysis of specific cases. A US Army training facility in California with its mock Iraqi villages and provisional hotel serves as a point of departure to establish and explore the concept of the war hotel as an optical device complicit in the production, representation and reception of conflict. With the advent of social media and distributed journalism conventional modes of war correspondence and coverage have been challenged and with it perhaps the necessity of a war hotel. Nevertheless, this thesis argues that this architectural-optical device has shaped the complex media constructions through which conflicts are seen and consumed and thus demands to be assessed theoretically and practically.

Streszczenie:
This research project focused on developing a better understanding of the role of consumer and management in mainstream hotels in achieving sustainability. The structure of this research is initiated by providing more information about the main research background, followed by a literature review and development of the models used. The research design is presented with the models. Results of three studies are explained and discussed. The main research question to be answered is ‘What is the role of consumer and management in creating sustainability in a hotel context?’ The literature review on stakeholder theory in strategic green management suggested a multi-perspective involvement (company and customers) in establishing green management in hotels. The hotel consumer literature review found a high extent of Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) approaches used to conceptualise individual Pro-Environmental Behaviour (PEB) in existing models. However, fewer studies clearly pointed out that the inclusion of hotel green attributes contributes to a better explanation of customer loyalty in hotels. There is also scarcity in the inclusion of behavioural elements and mindfulness in existing PEB models. This research includes a novel feature of mindfulness, domestic green habits (behaviour), and hotel green attributes (context) as an alternative approach to explain individual PEB in hotels. In accordance with stakeholder theory, this research examines co-operations between hotel management and customers to establish business sustainability and provide win-win-win solutions for customers, company, and the natural environment. This research is designed on the pragmatist paradigm. A sequence of mixedmethods design (qualitative – quantitative – qualitative) was selected as the strategy of inquiry. In the first qualitative phase, two customer focus group discussions were conducted to develop some questionnaire items. After the pilot study, a survey targeting 3-star to 5-star hotel users was conducted in Indonesia (n=324). A similar survey was also carried out in Australia (n=339). Hotel management interviews (n=26) were also conducted to develop better understandings on hotel pro-environmental management from managers’ perspectives. The empirical studies presented in this research suggest that the proenvironmental collaboration between consumer and hotel management maintains a significant role in achieving sustainable hotel business. The study of individual PEB in hotels suggests that mindfulness significantly impacts consumer PEB in hotels. Hotel green attributes are found to be prominent in facilitating green behaviours in hotels. The study of the influence of hotel green attributes on customer loyalty suggests that the establishment of hotel green attributes supports customer’s positive attitudes towards the hotel’s brand and exhorts customer loyalty. The significance of green attributes in hotels conforms to the results of manager interviews. The green typology developed from the management interviews suggests high-level motivation, wide scope, very good processes and monitoring, and enhanced levels of customer communication enables best practice pro-environmental management. Exploring PEB in hotels from different perspectives contributes a green collaboration concept between consumer and hotel management to the hotel sustainability literature. A typology of hotel green management is presented to predict the extent of green practices in mainstream hotels. The green management criteria of the typology contribute insights to the actualisation of green management in mainstream hotels, and detailed standards to achieve best green practices in hotels. Supporting the stakeholder theory, staff participation and customer communications are necessary to achieve best green management practices. The novel concept of mindfulness and the behavioural approach to determining consumer PEB in hotels contribute a new perspective to the consumer behaviour literature. This research contributes to hotel management literature by providing insights on the prominent role of hotel green attributes in the actualisation of customer PEB in hotels. Findings of this research add deeper understandings of the role of hotel green attributes and customer experience in generating customer loyalty in hotels. Practically, this research mainly points to green collaboration between stakeholders (managers, staff, and consumer) that can be applied in hotel management. The green management typology criteria developed from this research can be applied to measure the extent of a hotel’s green practices. It can also assist hotel managements by providing a valid reference to enable best green practices in their hotels. Results of this research encourage hotel managers to involve the staff in formulating a green strategy and communicate the green strategy to their customers. Noting the positive impact of hotel green attributes and good hotel customer experience on loyalty, findings of this research deliver a novel approach for hotel management to gain a better understanding of their customers and to improve customer loyalty in their hotel. The inclusion of behavioural aspects and mindfulness in determining hotel PEB challenges and encourages the enactment of PEB among hotel customers.

A Work Project, presented as part of the requirements for the Award of a Masters Degree in Management from the NOVA – School of Business and Economics
Altis Hotels Group is a successful family owned hotel group that holds a portfolio of several hotels in Lisbon, Portugal. Despite the success in the Portuguese market, aspects 3 such as the current economic crisis led Altis to consider the option of internationalizing and exploring opportunities in new markets. Initially, the company’s competitiveness in the Portuguese market was analysed in order to understand whether it has the necessary skills to pursue internationalization. This analysis was followed by a macro-environmental study of the country of destiny - Spain, and an analysis of characteristics of the hotel industry as well as opportunities to be explored in the city of Madrid. In the end, taking into account all of the previously mentioned analysis, an implementation plan is proposed.

Streszczenie:
Between 2010 and 2014 there was a 25% increase in international visitors to the United States, which signifies an opportunity for leaders and managers with a global mindset to take advantage of the opportunities derived from globalization to increase competitive advantage. However, some organizations have not prepared executives and managers to operate in a global environment, which can lead to business failure. The purpose of this multicase study was to gain an understanding of what global mindset strategies hotel executives developed to increase competitive advantage. The target population consisted of the general managers, directors of sales, and directors of catering from 3 full-service hotels at two international airports in the United States who have developed and deployed successful strategies reflecting a global mindset. Porter's 5 forces model served as the conceptual framework for this study. Data sources for this study included semistructured interviews, company websites, advertisements, franchise disclosure documents, and observations. Based on coding interview transcripts, creating mind maps using software, and methodological triangulation of the data, 3 themes emerged: leverage brand resources, personalize services, and leverage staff diversity for service delivery. The implications of this study for positive social change include the potential to create a multiplier effect starting with increased staffing due to increased business volume and profits. The potential increase in competitive advantage may also help hotels prosper and help to ensure funds are available for the hotels to remain contributing businesses for local communities' tax revenues to benefit citizens.

Streszczenie:

The environmental concern starts to be a key challenging issue for organizations nowadays. In fact, we find a growing trend towards “green” consumerism, which in turns affects companies’ strategy. The hospitality industry is not considered as one of the biggest pollution emitters, neither the one consuming the biggest quantity of non-renewable resources, but it is particularly interesting because of its increasing economic importance and the higher environmental concern it is showing. The whole process by which the hotels define policies, strategies as well as develop environmental practices in order to reduce their negative impact on the natural environment is named as Environmental Management. Those hotels that have followed this process and strive to be more environmentally friendly through the efficient use of energy, water and materials while providing quality services are defined as “green hotels”. Thus, in the present study we discover what motivated hotels in Sweden to become green, as well as the steps they followed in turning into green, including the definition of goals, the implementation of practices and the potential barriers that make this process difficult to execute.

In a first approach, we found in the literature review some theories related to the factors that influence companies to become green, as well as how to define a green strategy. In a second section, we focused on how the goals must be defined and which indicators can be used to evaluate the environmental performance. Finally, we presented possible barriers, relating this fact to the prioritization of objectives.

We led a qualitative approach by running semi-structured and structured interviews to the manager and one employee, respectively, of three different hotels in Abisko and Umeå. The results showed that the main reason why hotels become green is because of the pressure the stakeholders exert on them. The main steps hotels followed to achieve this objective were the establishment of plans and goals, involving the department´s level, its implementation (practices), review, evaluation and improvement of the environmental strategy. But this process is not easy; hotels have to manage with the big cost associated to become green.

At the end of the study, some suggestions will be given to hoteliers (e.g. define specific goals) as well as some suggestions for future researches (study of hotels from different cities of Sweden).

Streszczenie:
Tourism today, is considered a primary economic pillar for most countries, including Albania. The investments are immense, construction industry is prevailing while the design of hotels is based on individual requirements, sustainability and relation with the context, are considered a second-hand layer and the national policies so often are not prepared with the proper tools to approach the design or construction process. After the 1990’s the touristic accommodation industry, objecting the rigid means of communism, have followed other aspects of the society, by developing freely and unguided in democratic market. The transition provided on the way other issues regarding informality, sprawl and space occupations, quality of services in an unprepared context. Whilst, the inherited touristic settlements have been subject of misuse, privatization and in other cases part of a total function change. Despite these developments, Albania is experiencing high demand in terms of annually visitors especially in the seaside and in the mountainous areas, which has emerged the need of thinking how to use its actual assets and define explicit principles in developing the accommodation structures which contributes in the overall development of tourism aiming sustainability and minor invasion approaches. This research aims to understand the variation and typologies of touristic accommodation structures in Albania, by achieving inputs also in the relation with historic influences and context. Investigating the tourism sector in Albania, its trends and the national objectives towards this sector is considered an important phase of this study. The contribution of the thesis would be the analytical and descriptive analysis of the Hotels of Communism Period, with the focus on the typology of the city hotel. The expected result is a comprehensive strategic guideline, which is extended in the policies level and in the architectural design guidelines. The outcome is considered the identification of patterns and variables of design to be used as guiding principles towards restoration or new design processes. Having a clear inventory and documentation of socialist hotels, the process of preservation of the architectural heritage with this methodology is facilitated and an alternative to fulfil the need for touristic accommodation is considered.

This thesis analyzes the historical performance of chain-affiliated hotels and independent (non-affiliated) hotels with an emphasis on the volatility of room revenues. The thesis attempts to prove or disprove the hypothesis that chain affiliated hotels are less volatile than independent hotels. The findings of this thesis conclude that chain affiliated hotels have historically been less volatile than independent hotels. The lower volatility exhibited by chain hotels is due primarily to a lower volatility in room rate; the difference in occupancy volatility is not as evident. This thesis also considers the months since September 11th, 2001 and confirms that volatility for both chain and independent hotels has increased. While longterm trends suggest otherwise, data suggests that for a period following September 11th, independent hotels were actually less volatile than chain hotels. This short-term result is expected to revert to long-term trends over time.

Streszczenie:
Lastly, the study demonstrated that in order for hotels to become more sustainable, support is needed from government or hotel associations to provide education and training for the hotel managers.; This study explored the attitudes of hotel managers in Phuket, Thailand, in an attempt to identify whether their attitudes influence their utilization of environmental sustainability practices. Due to the increasing number of visitors to Phuket, Thailand, the consumption of natural resources has increased in the region, causing serious environmental problems. A sustainable way forward is needed for the tourism industry in the region in order to maintain quality of service while reducing environmental damage. The data analyzed in this study came from self-administered questionnaires that surveyed hotel managers in Phuket, Thailand, with a sample of 243 respondents. Research results revealed three dimensions of hotel manager attitude toward environmental sustainability practices, including operational management, social obligation, and sustainability strategy and policy. Furthermore, three constraints on the implementation of environmental management practices were identified: lack of support, perceived difficulty, and lack of demand. The attitudes of hotel managers regarding specific factors and barriers are also presented in this study. The results of this study show that hotel managers overall possess positive attitudes toward environmental sustainability practices. Finally, the findings reveal that hotel managers' attitudes toward sustainability practices depend on their social demographics, the type of hotel they operate, their degree of ownership of the hotel, whether or not their hotel was affected by the 2004 tsunami, and the year their hotel was built. The results of this study suggest that it is necessary for hotel managers to understand the importance of environmental sustainability practices because this understanding can help motivate them in implementing sustainability practices in their hotels. Furthermore, it can guide hotel managers when deciding which environmental policies are suitable for their hotels.

From an analysis of the concept of hedonic consumption, we studied the concepts of Experiential Marketing, from the theories developed by Pine and Gilmore, and also the thought of Bernd Schmitt. On this basis, we find that the concept of Experiential Marketing is still very confusing, and is used in quite different situations. Comparing the principal authors, and with the backdrop of a series of studies on the consumer experience, we conclude that, effectively is more important in this concept is the use made of sensory experiences as a marketing tool. With this, we developed a multiple case study where we attempted to evaluate the use of experience in five star hotels of the city of Sao Paulo. The result shows that this is a process that is still in the beginning, but already has some interesting actions and should be developed.

Streszczenie:
The main subject of the thesis is the introduction of a computer system into two hotels (one existing and one new) of very similar size, operating system and management structure. A model of information relationships is developed to aid an interactionist analysis of the research data. Findings include the following: Management may use the computer as an organisational change agent but the technology itself does not necessarily play an active role in this. A computer system can be used to foster closer integration of departments, but such technological integration can also diminish interdepartmental cooperation. A period of organisational turbulence occurs when information technology is introduced into an hotel front office, and this will continue until the entrant rule system which accompanies the entrant technology becomes integrated with the embedded rule system already present. Over this initial period, because of an apparent over-concentration on machine-related tasks, a temporarily reduced level of customer service may occur. After a period of time, staff adapt the new rules to fit with their own requirements. These requirements sometimes include reducing customer pressure by 'managing' the technology for their own needs. Lack of middle management's prior technical knowledge of the computer system may lead to reduced control because their previous reliance on a combination of better knowledge of the embedded rule system plus greater experiental 'social skills' does not necessarily compensate for staff's newly-acquired technical skills. User comprehension of the system suffers where the data used in training is of a discrete nature and where the technology itself is not adequately explained. Initial user acceptance is higher in the new hotel than in the existing one; however, the reasons are not entirely clear because, according to company management, the situation after two years was a reversal of that position.

Thesis (MTech (Business Administration))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2017.
The hospitality industry has undergone far-reaching changes based on discussions held with industry representatives. Due to the rapid development of accounting systems there is an over reliance on systems to control costs. This influences the accounting skills of department managers, which are insufficient to manage their departments effectively. The research investigates the role and relevance of accounting skills amongst department managers of selected hotels in Cape Town. The research methodology employed a semi-structured questionnaire that was used to collect quantitative and qualitative data. The focus was on selected three-star (3) and five-star (5) hotels within Cape Town. The findings were drawn from a small sample of 45 hotels, among which 35 participants from the 45 hotels completed the questionnaire. A review of literature identified a strong need for department managers to have accounting skills, but there is limited evidence whether they actually hold these skills. Statistical analysis of the responses revealed that less than 50% of the participants were confident that they had sufficient accounting skills to manage their departments effectively. Two key issues were identified (1) the benefits of accounting skills (2) the need for formal accounting skills training. If the findings and concerns of the lack of accounting skills are not addressed it will affect cost control, costs will increase and profitability will be negatively affected. Recommendations include more interaction and forging links between academia and industry. A challenge for hospitality academics is review current financial management training provided and introduces mentorship programmes to develop the accounting skills of department managers.

Streszczenie:
Luxury implies indulgence, hedonic pleasure and access to resources in abundance. Sustainable development, on the other hand, encourages modifying human behaviour towards a lower rate of resource consumption. For years these two concepts were regarding as contradicting, so much so that they were rarely mentioned within the same sentence of any kind. However, this view has been undergoing a dramatic turnaround ever since the dawn of the new millennium, and a new expression was conceived - sustainable luxury. This phenomenon has a complex and far-reaching mission and has been gaining momentum in recent years. My qualitative study aims to find out whether sustainable luxury is achievable in real-life businesses, particularly for hotel operations. It is firstly reviewed as an emerging concept through literature and desktop research. Next, its practicality is investigated on four luxury branded hotels in Hong Kong. It is found that sustainable luxury is currently a popular de facto expression used by the luxury sector to describe the attitude and effort towards integrating sustainability in the design and production of luxury products and services. Although it was yet to be established academically as a concept, a cornerstone report “Deeper Luxury” produced by World Wide Fund (WWF) in 2009 promulgates an overarching principle that the luxury sector has the duty to edit and influence consumer’s consumption choice and behaviour. A holistic action plan specifically tailored at the luxury sector is provided in this report and it is adopted as the assessment framework for my investigation. Details are construed to suit hotel operations and a set of scoring criteria is developed to facilitate a structured assessment. My investigation reveals a stark contrast that at present, sustainable luxury in urban luxury branded hotels is practical at the ‘back of the house’ areas while limitation lies in the areas related to the ‘front of the house.’ Engaging customers is found to be the single biggest challenge while both innovation and external collaboration are proven to be valuable means for the subject matter. Coordinating effort with the corporate office is also essential. The owner could either be the key driver or barrier for sustainable luxury. Furthermore, external infrastructure and support is vital. The study brings to my conclusion that the overriding factor for sustainable luxury to be achievable in real-life businesses is the existence of the right mindset, a mindset that believes in the co-existence of luxury and sustainability.

Streszczenie:
In spite of the increasing importance of the service industry, it has failed to receive much attention from researchers. This lack of attention is especially true of the hospitality segment of the service industry, and consequently, almost no attention has been paid specifically to hotels and motels. This study explores the possible reasons for poor or inadequate service by attempting to first identify the important complexity variables of service, and second to evaluate how those variables relate to employee attitudinal reactions to their job. A total of sixteen job characteristics, theorized to have a positive effect on service complexity, were empirically tested against attitudinal reactions measures. The data was collected from 212 front office employees in 25 different hotels and motels. This study modified and evaluated an instrument (The Job Diagnostic Survey) that may be used to measure both complexity and attitudinal reaction variables. The modifications included the addition of nine new complexity variables. The results concluded that the modified instrument was internally reliable at an acceptable level for new research, and that there was strong evidence to support content validity and nomological validity measures which tended to favor the original variables over the newly proposed complexity variables. Implications of this study highlight the fact that there is considerable uncertainty in the measurement of hotel/motel service operations. Therefore, additional research is necessary to more completely define the characteristics of service complexity and then to measure its effects on employee attitudes.

Despite the recent recession, the economic growth of recent decades has created a group of so-called ‘Global-Elites’ (CeMoRe, 2010). Small in number, but high in net worth and influence they are influential in the creation of, and desire for consumption, often portrayed as luxury, privilege, prestige, and 'class'. The tourism industry has also benefited from growth, with demand predicted to double by the year 2020, reaching an estimated $14.95 billion (World Tourism & Travel Council, 2010). Much of this growth has been at the top end, as Keissling et. al. (2009) note an unprecedented rise in demand for the luxury hotel sector over the past decade. The global elite’s leisure consumption practices require considerable research attention, and yet research into luxury services, such as hotels and associated hospitality services, is greatly undeveloped. Atwal and Williams (2008) note the ability of consumption as a means for consumers to make statements about themselves, and nowhere is this more true than in the world of the Global-Elite, who seemingly having no desire to curb current travel activities (Elliott & Urry, 2009). This may be due to the uncertainty that is felt about future travel opportunities, with environmental decline of natural and heritage attractions paralleled by numerous threats to travel such as peak oil and political instability. However, in recent years, there has been increased interest in the study of ethical consumption in the tourism arena (e.g. Novelli, 2005; Sharpley, 2006; Lansing & Vries, 2006; Yeoman et. al., 2006). Although there appears to be incompatibility between the concepts of luxury and concerns around ethical consumption and sustainability, this research posits that while current transitions (around travel and tourism) continue towards further unsustainability (Cohen, 2010), ethical consumption may provide an avenue for social distinction and status differentiation in the world of the Global-Elites. In order to adequately understand the behavioural intentions of the Global-Elites, the synergy between consumer values, luxury dimensions and ethical consumption needs to be explored. This research examines the influence of consumer values, as a more universal measure of intent, in relation to ethical consumption in luxury hotels. This research argues that by reducing the uncertainty related to the degree to which consumers (Global-Elites) value ethical consumption, deeper insights into these apparently incompatible spaces and places for ethical consumption will be obtained. Furthermore, luxury hotels will be able to assess the suitability of marketing and communicating such strategies to their customers.

Very often remote peripheral locations with scarce unique attractions find it difficult to attract investment and development in many spheres including tourism. Yet some innovative entrepreneurs have taken advatage of some of these locations, using the natural resources (though not scarce) that they posses to develop themed tourism. The success of these themed establishments located in remote peripheries is renounced as they attract tourists world wide. This thesis therefore explores the fantasy and themed hotel product and location as elements of attraction in peripheral locations. Information obtained  through consultation with expersts will not only bring new knowlege to academia on the subject; it would also be useful in planning new themed destination products in the periphery since it provides inside knowledge on what to consider when setting up establishments of like characteristics.

In recent decades, boutique hotels have witnessed a dramatic increase in popularity in the United States. The purpose of this paper is to provide the reader with an understanding of boutique hotel value and conditions that allow for boutique hotel success. First, it will provide a formal definition of boutique hotel, a definition which remains elusive despite the popularity of the hotel category. Second, it will provide a comparative analysis, based upon price-per-room paid by investors, of three different hotel categories: boutique, independent, and branded chain. In defining boutique hotel, the paper relies upon both written definitions and interviews with real estate developers and real estate brokers. The boutique hotel category is defined, and then contrasted with the definitions of independent hotels and branded chain hotels. In analyzing boutique hotel value, the paper considers hotels that have sold in the past five years in Boston, New York City, and Washington D.C. Price-per-room paid by investors for these hotels is compared across each of the three hotel categories, in each of the three cities. The paper analyzes the results of the value comparison of the different hotel categories.
(cont.) In conjunction with such analysis and interviews, tourism data for each city is reviewed in an attempt to gain a deeper understanding of boutique hotels. In conclusion, the paper discusses conditions that allow for boutique hotel success, and potential cultural explanations for the boutique hotel movement. Potential shifts in American consumer interest are discussed, as well as the broader significance of the boutique hotel movement.
