Streszczenie:
The relationships between humans and animals have been associated with various therapeutic implications. While there is no agreed upon name, the term "pet facilitated therapy" has become widely accepted. Pet facilitated therapy has been particularly adopted to describe the relationship between humans and domestic animals. In contrast to public attitudes o f twenty years ago, the field of animal-human relationships is now respected as a legitimate area of research investigation (Levinson, 1982.) Numerous studies have been conducted on the benefits of the relationships between domestic animals and humans; however, there continues to be little empirical evidence that specifically addresses the relationship between humans and horses. Therapeutic horseback riding, a term which takes into account the relationship formed with the horse both while riding and on the ground, has been widely accepted among the professionals in the field. Despite this agreement, applied research in the field is needed to validate its apparent benefits. The present study was developed to determine how a therapeutic horseback riding program can predict outcome on self-esteem, frustration, tolerance, depression and anxiety. Participants were 81 emotionally disturbed males between the ages of 6-16 who were students in a residential treatment center. Results were analyzed using zero-order correlations and a series of setwise multiple regression equations. The results indicated that children who experienced a meaningful bond to a horse were more anxious and depressed. However, the bond with a horse did not significantly influence a child's self- esteem or frustration tolerance. Children who were more involved in the horsemanship program tended to be less depressed and anxious. A child's self-esteem and frustration tolerance were not affected by their involvement in the horsemanship program. Children's conduct in the horsemanship program did not significantly influence their self-esteem, frustration tolerance, depression or anxiety. Implications of these results are for the therapeutic use of horseback riding as an adjunct or alternative therapy for emotionally handicapped individuals.

Streszczenie:
The competent use of horses was essential to the seventeenth century English gentleman; however, scholarly analysis of human-horse interactions for this time period has been relatively slim. While historians of honour and masculinity have examined various aspects of gentlemanly honour, such as politics, religion, and gender division, horses and horsemanship have remained unexplored. This study, through the reading of seventeenth-century horsemanship manuals, will place horses and the art of horsemanship into the historians' perception of how gentlemen created, maintained, or lost honour for themselves, for their families, and for the English commonwealth. Horses and horsemanship, other than being pleasant pastimes or symbols of man's domination over nature, were central to gentlemanly honour. The breeding and importing of "great horses" was undertaken according to specific aesthetic and practical criteria which, if the requirements were followed, improved individual and commonwealth honour. While mounted on a "great horse" a gentleman, along with displaying perfected riding skills, needed to showcase emotional and bodily action bridling to avoid charges of ignorance, ineptness, bestiality, or effeminacy. Horses were a central means of creating gentlemanly honour both for individual advancement and for England's honourable reputation as a strong and defended kingdom.

Streszczenie:
Millions of horses worldwide are subjected to various training and management routines by people of various levels of ability. Such interventions can have detrimental impacts on the welfare of these horses. Therefore, improving the way horses are trained and managed is of great importance. By applying the principles of learning theory to training, and combining these with those of equine ethology, the training and management of horses can be improved. The current project examined the role of reinforcement in equitation through the following series of studies: 1. A survey of all registered equestrian coaches within Australia to determine their knowledge of learning theory. 2. The concurrent use of positive and negative reinforcement. 3. The optimal timing of reinforcement when teaching foals to lead. 4. The development of a low-cost sensor and ambulatory recording system (worn on the horse) that can be used in everyday training to measure the tensions in the reins of ridden horses. 5. The measurement of rein tensions required for horses to elicit specific equitation movements.

Streszczenie:
This thesis is part of a journey that has encompassed a lifetime love of horses. It evolved from horses being a childhood passion, and led to working with horses together with young people with various disadvantages and difficulties in a therapeutic and educational capacity. The PhD research study followed as an attempt to articulate and share some of the experiences of ‘The Yard’, the therapeutic horsemanship (TH) programme on which this thesis is based. Through a personal belief and understanding that contact with horses could be therapeutic in a number of ways I found myself in the fortunate position to be able to incorporate TH in my work as a social worker for a foster care company. Whilst initially this was limited to young people who were in foster placements with this particular company, the TH programme expanded through interest from outside agencies to include young people referred from youth offending and other organisations. The young people who attended the TH programme, named ‘The Yard’ for the purpose of this study, were generally considered to be ‘at-risk’ within the social work and allied professions due to their circumstances and histories. Substantial research within the literature concerned with risk and resilience claims there is a high likelihood of negative life outcomes as a result of experiencing adverse childhood experiences (Masten, Best, & Garmezy, 1990; Rutter, 1985). It cannot be claimed that this thesis is completely impartial or objective; on the contrary it is a deeply personal and reflexive account of my experiences alongside seven of the young people who attended The Yard and participated in the study. I can only hope that through the many hundreds of hours of the meticulous process that has made up this practitioner-researcher ethnography, that I have provided some kind of useful contribution to the knowledge base of TH. In any case, at the very least, it has certainly been a hugely worthwhile endeavour in terms of gaining invaluable insight into my own practice, together with associated personal and professional growth.

The benefits of horse riding for people with disabilities have been recognised for centuries, however, there has been very little research that explores the significance and meaning of Riding for the Disabled (RDA) for riders and there are no studies of parents of riders. This thesis is based upon ethnography and interviews with riders and riders' parents at a Riding for the Disabled Centre in Sydney, Australia. It explores the perceptions and experiences of riders and also analyses the role of parents in influencing their child's experience of the RDA. It examines parents' experiences of the RDA and the impact that it has had on them and their family. This thesis is premised on three research questions. The three questions are; 'how do riders perceive and experience the RDA and how and why do these perceptions differ?', 'how do parents perceive the RDA and its impact on their child with an impairment' and 'how do parents perceive the RDA's impact on their family and themselves?' The study draws on a feminist framework and utilises the work of feminist theorists working in Disability Studies to 'broaden' the social model of disability. This framework facilitates the exploration of personal experiences of riding as it privileges the voice of the participants and also acknowledges the diversity of RDA experiences that exist amongst them. It also allows room for the physical, bodily experience of riding to be investigated. Furthermore, this research responds to Shakespeare's (2006) call for further research on the 'social relations of disability' - it investigates the relationships between volunteers who do not have an impairment, and the riders who have an impairment. The central argument that emerges is that Riding for the Disabled is a unique individual experience that holds varied meanings for riders. For some Riding for the Disabled is a central feature of their lives and has altered their world. For others, it is one activity among many and its impact is limited. The type of impairment an individual rider had was often a key determinant of how they experienced the RDA. For parents of riders the RDA exposes them to parents with similar experiences and enables practical knowledge and information to be exchanged.

Streszczenie:
'To Amaze the People with Pleasure and Delight': an analysis of the horsemanship manuals of William Cavendish, the first Duke of Newcastle (1593-1676). William Cavendish published two horsemanship manuals in 1658 and 1667, setting out his method for the noble art of the riding house. This thesis argues that within the canon of Newcastle's writing, his horsemanship manuals are key texts, offering insights into his writing practice, personal philosophy and motivation. To understand the importance of the manuals in their cultural context, Newcastle's contribution to the development of riding as an art is considered, with particular reference to the way in which his attitude towards other authors influenced each manual. A detailed examination of the technical aspects of the manuals illustrates that to ignore the method in favour of the historical and political material is to overlook a vital element. Newcastle's understanding of the horse's mind is a key to his approach, therefore this study argues that his royalist ideologies are supported and paralleled through his treatment and expectation of his horses. The engraved plates that illustrate the first manual are analysed as multi-layered images, offering a notional journey through his estates. The thesis will conclude with consideration of near-contemporary responses to Newcastle's work and argue that the manuals' importance to his own self actualisation and emotional security is written as much into the practicalities of the method as the theatricalities of its presentation.

Streszczenie:
This thesis investigates the ethical work British horse riders conduct in order to know their horses well. This ethical imperative emerges out of a changing equestrian context. A broadening socio-economic demographic of equestrian participants, with an increasingly female population, moves equestrianism further away from its military and elitist heritage, and towards more 'one-horse owners' who nurture the ideal of close, companionable, 'partnerships' with their horses. At the same time, an increasing number of options for horse care and riding style instil the owner with responsibility to act as their horse's agent in choosing well. One of the things that they must choose, from a commercialist sphere of options, is how to educate themselves and their horses in order to achieve true partnership. This market is fraught with critique and debunking, reform and invention. I describe how this relates to a broader neoliberal context in which the idea of 'real connection' is highly valued and nostalgically missed. Through this ethnography, I aim to bring the anthropology of ethics and the 'animal turn' in anthropology into productive dialogue with one another. This is no easy task, since the former is concerned with the human sphere of moral conduct, while the latter has implemented a substantial challenge to anthropocentric study and advocated a recognition of life 'beyond the human'. However, I find grounds for mutual engagement in investigating the role that reflective thought plays within intersubjective equestrian dynamics. Many authors within the 'animal turn' critique the Cartesian distinctions between mind and body, self and other, human and non-human, and advocate that we should be cautious of the forms of detachment they invoke. In contrast, I argue that the 'epistemological responsibility' involved in knowing the horse well requires a complex and highly particular mastery of the dualistic distinctions, rather than a negation of them. In making this argument, I also contribute to the anthropology of ethics an example of nuanced relatedness between embodied intersubjectivity, self-critique, and knowledge evaluation. I demonstrate ethnographically that horse riders critique and cultivate a number of ethical, epistemological skills: open-mindedness, management of real and non-real registers of speech, self-awareness and self-comportment, narrative competence, accurate sensitive perception and good 'feel' for the horse. I demonstrate that highly valorised experiences of 'true connection' comprise of moments where horse and human move in such harmony that a third-person reflective stance is redundant; no interpretative work, communicative repair, or self-assessment is necessary. However these moments are rare and fleeting, because in this context, relational skill is (self)critical skill, riders continually learn to 'feel' more detail, to evaluate more critically, and to better recognise subtle signs of disengagement and miscommunication. In sum, this thesis demonstrates that 'true relatedness' is performed as precarious within this particular classed, gendered and epistemological context, and mobilises this finding to contribute to debates in the anthropology of ethics and the 'animal turn'.

This research has as objective to study families of children that have a delay on neuropsicomotor development due to prematurity and that are frequenting an interdisciplinary therapy called equine therapy, a therapeutical approach that has as primordial source the horse and its environment. It was carried through with two children of the Caxangá Golf & Country Club Nucleus of Equine therapy, its respective families and professionals who accompany the children in the therapeutical process. The instruments used consisted of comments of the children in the sessions; interviews with therapists of the institution, with the parents and, when necessary, with other carers. The importance of the bond of the child with the animal was evidenced by its bigger participation in the therapy and by the family investment, as this intervenes positively to the course of the therapy; the importance of the interaction between the child, the team and other practitioners in the socialization process; the adequacy of the stimulations of the equine therapy environment by the interdisciplinary team, as well as the exchanges between them and the family; the knowledge of the childs family history for understanding its behavior and family events; the importance of the childs feedback as to its development in the family to remain investing and believing. An improvement of the child in the socio-affective aspect was perceived, facilitating and being facilitated by the family relations. Therefore, through the research we understood the repercussions of the equine therapy, as well as its intervening elements in the socioaffective development of the child with neuropsicomotor retardation due to prematurity

Thesis (MEdPsych)--Stellenbosch University, 2014.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: High-risk behaviour among adolescents places heavy burdens on the public health, social welfare and criminal justice systems of many countries. Today, Equine-Assisted Learning (EAL) is increasingly used as an adjunct and experiential intervention programme to support the learning and personal development of adolescents at risk. It combines counselling and educational programmes with interactive activities involving horses (Thomas, 2009). The aim of this investigation was to conceptualize the experiences of these at-risk adolescents in residential care (AIRC), since gaps exist in both international and national research pertaining to studies which focus on exploring adolescents' experiences of taking part in EAL programmes (Holder, 2011). An interactive, qualitative and multiple case study design was employed in this study. The research was conducted at a Western Cape residential care facility with five adolescents between the ages of 12 and 18, after they had completed a three-week EAL programme. The programme comprised five sessions of one hour each. Data was collected through a projective technique (collage), semi-structured individual interviews, and a focus group interview. The research findings suggested that the at-risk adolescents experienced this Equine-Assisted Learning programme as positive and that it contributed to strengthening their relationships, enhancing attachment, self-esteem, empathy, communication, social competence, and a sense of mastery, as well as opening up future possibilities for them. As a relatively new field of study in South Africa, Equine-Assisted Learning can make a significant contribution to fostering the learning and development of adolescents in residential care.

Change management is a highly researched topic. With industry changing at record speed, it is inevitable that corporations will engage in a change management endeavor. As humans innately resist change at first exposure, corporations strive to acquire knowledge in adoption. It may not be enough to understand status quo proponents, but rather their underlying long-standing belief systems which may be affecting how they view change. What makes an employee resist corporate change? Most studies conclude that humans will resist innately. This research dives into the unique environment of the equine industry to uncover how long-standing belief systems contribute to adoption or resistance. The motivation for this research began with a fascination with long-standing belief systems within the equine industry. The unique environment of the equine industry is steeped in centuries of tradition, and while housing long-standing belief systems that are time-tested and passed down from generation to generation, in most cases, without awareness. The industry is currently experiencing a phenomenon that has never taken place: a change is occurring that is positioning two equine factions, natural and traditional, against each other in opposing viewpoints. Some view this change as the start of a paradigm shift; others view it as a fad. The nature of natural horsemanship is now up for debate. The study was conducted by using qualitative data collection in a semi-structured format. Forty-one (41) equine leaders in natural and traditional hoof care and horsemanship were recorded in over 30 hours of data. The interview model included not only the industry leaders proposing or resisting change but also the professionals in the industry working in the field, experiencing the conflict first hand. The research presented revealed an interesting finding. Although 61 codes were identified, a specific area within the study revealed a “hybrid” group of codes amongst the traditional horsemen in hoof care and horsemanship. Leaders who are advocating for the status quo showed levels of natural adoption that was unexpected. The research pivoted to the areas of traditional resistors and traditional adopters. The main objective is to decipher why some members of the industry are adopting while others are resisting. As adoption is the main objective for change management, uncovering the reasons for resisting seemed to dictate the data more prevalently. From this research, it can be deduced that there is significant evidence to support the findings that people who resist change may have these characteristics or traits in their belief system: Strong traditional beliefs such as culture and history, honor-driven, strong religious ties, defensive by nature, communicate well, believe safe, minimal adaptation (innovation), and consider themselves to be trustworthy and responsible, are people-oriented and outgoing. According to this research, people with those traits and characteristics are more apt to resist change and may be a potential problem when instituting change in an organization. This research points towards the significant evidence to support the findings that people who resist change may have these characteristics or traits in their belief system: Frustration in industry or a sense of apathy, open-mindedness or flexibility, vulnerability, communicate well, family ties, controlling and shows hero tendencies. Not many other industries can report that it has remained unchanged over time, even in the face of industrial revolution, war, and domestication. However, in the past 20 years, the equine industry has been divided through a new belief system that is challenging these time-tested traditions and beliefs regarding hoof care and horsemanship. The natural horse viewpoint has created an opposing faction to the traditional belief system that governed horse care and welfare since the dawn of time. The qualitative data that was gathered for this research allows for the synthesis of the proposed paradigm shift and opposing force analysis. Although not a true paradigm shift to date, these two factions, natural and traditional, are dividing the industry in two. Not a more perfect scenario could be present to study long-standing belief systems in relation to adoption and resistance to change. The Hybrid Adaptation Model was formed from the qualitative data provided by 41 industry experts through the grounded theory method. This model can be used to navigate through the change management process. This research revealed a theory that adaptation must occur prior to adoption and partial adoption may cause a “hybrid” sector.

The military dynamism of the British Empire generated a deep-tooted equestrian culture and bred strong horses accustomed to the rhythms of warfare. The periods of peace led military men and mercenaries to develop a new type of spectacular riding that would provide them with a new source of income. In 1768 in Madrid, the Englishman Thomas Price gave the first documented performances in Spain of a new genre, that of “show riding,” that would attract more than seventy of equestrian troupes specialising in these exercises for a century and a half. The total absence of a historical study on this topic leads to ask ourselves today: what was the activity of those equestrian companies in Spain, and what role did they play in the construction of the circus in its present form? The evolution of open-field exhibitions of those riders in the second half of the 18th century brought about the invention of the ring, the circle that makes it possible to impose on the horse a regular trotting rhythm controlled by the ringmaster’s whip from the centre. In their continuous development, the equestrian companies, which gave the ring its reason for being, premiered processes first of pairing and then of capture, with various spectacles based in general on the skill of men: the characters of the comedia dell’arte and the Isabelline jester mutated into clowns, the acrobats into tightrope walkers, the athletic gymnasts into acrobats and divers, animal exhibitors into tamers, and so on. The hypothesis that it was the equestrian companies who gave form to the modern circus arises out of their demand to have their own space: that of the ring, which would progressively incorporate the figures mentioned above. Linked to the equestrian function, the word “circus” would not define it until later on – in Spain it was not used until 1830 – and initially it was not even applied to the show itself but simply to the new performance space: the building whose roof covered the ring. In a very clear metonym, from the mid 19th century onwards, “circus” began to refer to that genre that was very slowly beginning to move away from its equestrian basis. This thesis therefore contributes a theoretical and methodological proposal that makes it possible to explore a theme ignored so far, filling a void in the Spanish historiography of popular entertainment. The present investigation comes to life with the aim of identifying, localising, grouping, systematising, ordering and interpreting the mass of useful sources for drawing up a history of the activity of the equestrian companies, the origin of the circus arts in Spain. In order to systematise and order, based on various useful parameters, the information located through our consultations, we are proceeding to create a single archive which, in the form of data sheets, compiles the data of the equestrian company’s stay in the town or city: name of the troupe, director, dates and place of performance, cast of performers, programme, number of horses, admission prices, and so on, using information drawn from multiple supports: press, administrative documentation, books, publicity material and photographs. The gathering of this data, firstly, followed by a meticulous study of each one of the equestrian companies that performed in Spain, will enable us to discover the patterns that governed their permanent itinerancy: the internal laws that ruled the artists’ families, the base of the company; the means of transport used; the routes and their main stops; their performance season, with the peculiarities of its calendar; their repertoire of exercises; their methods of training, publicity and administration; their skills and frequent difficulties; and, naturally, the composition of their audiences.

This study is about cavalry warfare in the Roman world from the 1st century BC to the 6th century AD. It is a work of synthesis dealing with the employment doctrine of cavalry in the imperial and early Byzantine eras. Organizational and strategic issues are discussed, but the focus is mainly put on tactics and battle mechanics. The aim of this research is to account for the evolution of the art of war during the end of Antiquity by analyzing specifically the stakes involved in the development and use of cavalry. The growing importance of mounted troops in the imperial strategy marks an important change in the history of the Roman army, with a gradual shift from offensive warfare, pitched battle and heavy infantry toward deception, frontier warfare and mounted archery. These changes, which have never been the subject of a thorough analysis, are here reviewed in the overall context of Roman history. The cross-analysis of narrative, technical, iconographic and archaeological sources reveals a coherent evolutionary pattern, an "organic development of forms of combat" (Hans Delbrück), which we endeavor to reinsert in the wider context of a changing Roman military culture, attaching particular importance to the Romans' relationship to warfare and to their ideal perception of the respective roles of infantry and cavalry

Diploma thesis called: " Evaluation of the use of horsemanship method in horse training" determined the extension and application of this method. The research of this diploma thesis is based on a questionnaire survey that identifies and evaluates the involved horses, their stud, age and gender. It determines the purposes for which horses are bred and which riding style is used. The thesis analyses ground work with horses too. Ground work is indispensable part of horses training with horsemanship methods. Finally, the questionnaire detects the use of horses in sport and their sports results. It compares horses trained by horsemanship and horse trained by classical riding. The research was conducted from September 2014 to March 2015. 38 responses were collected with a total number of 133 horses. Concerning the sample of horses, the most commonly used breed is Czech Warmblood, the majority of horses is 6 -- 10 years old and the most occurring gender is a mare. Horsemanship method is mainly used in western riding style. 33 respondents think that the method is effective and 30 of them use it primarily for training a young horse. Horses trained by this method have very good sports results in western disciplines.

Streszczenie:
This diploma thesis investigates the possibilities of using the horsemanship to help children and young people with behaviour disabilities. It is divided into seven thematic parts. At the beginning, there is the definition of the group of children and young people with behaviour disabilities. The second part, called ethology of the horse, describes the most important characteristics of the horses. The following part defines the term hypo rehabilitation. The most important characteristics of the horse, which are successfully used in therapy, are presented in the forth part. The fifth part characterizes the horsemanship and its most important representatives. The following part shows, why is horsemanship well suited to be used for this kind of clients. The last part deals with the horse therapy itself, with its effect on the client, with the role of the therapist, with the choice of horses for each kind of clients. The diploma thesis has proven the importance of the social behaviour of the horse in the therapy and the possibility of using it as a mirror in the work with people. Further, it has shown the necessity of future investigations in this field and the urgency of further education of the therapists in psychotherapy, ethology and communication with the horses.

The purpose of this study was to explore the potential benefits of a therapeutic horsemanship program for children adopted from foster care and their adoptive mothers. Standardized measures, open-ended interviews and surveys were administered to determine effects on external child behavior, child self-esteem and parenting stress. The Child Behavior Checklist was administered to measure behavioral challenges in the children in this sample. There were no statistically significant changes on any of the CBCL scales. Qualitative data from the mothers, Instructors and researcher observations show some affect on behavior. The Culture Free Self-Esteem Inventory-3 was administered to measure self-esteem of the nine children in the sample. The decrease on the Global Self-Esteem Quotient of the CFSEI-3 was statistically significant using. Of the nine children, only three of them scored in the clinical range at pre-test. Of these three, two moved into the normal range and the third improved her score to be very close to the normal range. Qualitative data from the mothers, Instructors and researcher observations support this finding. The Total Stress score of the Parenting Stress Index -- Short Form for the mothers in the sample did not show a statistically significant decrease. Six of the nine mothers' pre-test and post-test scores were in the clinical range and only three had decreased post-test scores. The Qualitative data obtained through interviews, surveys and observations did not support a direct impact of the program on stress levels but rather an impact on level of support. Many mothers reported that they liked spending time with the other mothers to share resources and discuss their children. The data collected in this study does not provide sufficient evidence to make any causal statements about therapeutic horsemanship programs and children adopted from foster care. It does, however, provide support for the need for future research. The findings from this study have implications for meeting the needs of a variety of children adopted from foster and their adoptive parents.

This paper examines the relationship between Herodotus’ ethnographic account of the Persians and his narrative of their actions in the Histories. The first chapter analyzes the placement of this ethnography within the historian’s description of the fall of Croesus and the rise of Cyrus and then examines the language that Herodotus uses to describe the Persian customs. The second chapter focuses more narrowly on the elements of the Persian trivium (truth telling, archery, and horsemanship) and analyzes the way in which the historian incorporates these themes into his narrative. Finally, the third chapter of the report examines how Herodotus integrates all three elements of the trivium into an extended logos, that of the revolt of the Persian nobles against the usurper Magi and the subsequent ascension of Darius. This analysis thereby demonstrates that the multifaceted relationship between the historian’s Persian ethnography and his narrative connects the Persians’ successes with their adherence to their customs.

This research emphasizes on feasibility about developing horsemanship for mainland tourists in Kinmen. I used Horsemanship Cognition, Course Questions, Behavior Survey and Demographics to construct questionnaires. 376 questionnaires were collected from the people who are equestrians and serve in Chinese Equestrian Association (CEA), Shenzhen Jockey Club or Hong Kong Jockey Club. I used SPSS statistical software to operate Narrative Statistics, T-test, One-way Analysis, Regression Analysis,Scheffé Test to analyze those questionnaires and lead the following conclusions: 1. Youth and highly educated staffs have more interests in participating in equestrian sports. 2. Females gain more pleasure and confidence than males in cognition. 3. Seniors have more equestrian information than youth; the highly-educated people are more knowledgeable about equestrian than the lower ones. 4. Significantly distinctive causal relationship exists among equestrian skills, identity and emotion. 5. Racecourse facilities have influence on equestrian awareness and skills. 6. Peoples can accept the price of horse riding(single time) ranging from RMB$200 to RMB$300. 7. Nearly 60% of the respondents ride horse more than 30 times a year and 80% more than 16 times a year. It shows there is a potential equestrian market in Mainland China. 8. Nearly 30% of the respondents said they had not joined the jockey club, but several of them had the habit of riding every month. So we should be aiming at those groups to strengthen the market of equestrianism. My conclusions show when the government policy for Chinese tourists visiting Kinmen is promulgated, we should invite those mainland tourists who are interested in equestrian to visit Kinmen, which may increase the revenue of the racecourse. Also, the conclusions of this study could be used as a reference to the Kinmen equestrian tourism industry in the future.

Although other forms of learning support such as remedial education and occupational therapy are available to assist a child with a learning barrier or developmental delay, this study set out to explore therapeutic horse riding as an alternative learning support strategy. The motivation was to support and develop the core skills of Amy, a preschool child who is physically disabled. The researcher’s premise was that owing to the limitations in Amy’s movement ability, certain developmental areas required for school readiness would be impacted. The aim of this case study was to describe the development of core skills such as perceptual-motor, socio-emotional and language and how these underlying abilities could develop through the movement modality of the horse. A therapeutic horse riding program was implemented over a period of time with the specific goal to stimulate certain core skills by encompassing mind and body. The horse, with its distinctive three-dimensional movement, facilitated this unique form of learning. Although European countries have made great progress in this area, South Africa is steadily following suit. Therefore, the researcher hoped to contribute to the body of existing knowledge within this field. Data were collected from different sources to substantiate the findings. Findings have revealed an improvement in many areas of Amy’s core skills, in particular her balance and posture, and the crossing of her midline. Further findings were that Amy’s concentration and listening skills improved and she became more even-tempered, confident and innovative during therapeutic horse riding (THR). The researcher recommends therapeutic horse riding as a supplementary learning support strategy within a school for special educational needs although it can also be implemented in the mainstream context. In this regard, the therapeutic horse riding therapist becomes a valued member of the support team in a collaborative endeavour to contribute to the holistic development of a child like Amy or any child with learning, emotional or behavioural needs. Although THR is considered a new field of therapy results have shown that it provides great benefits to those who experience it.

of Diploma Thesis Social Cognition with horse's assistance Adela Pfannova 2017 Social Cognition is an area of psychology, which evaluates how people perceive others, relations and events in their social environment. Improving skills in this area is beneficial for different parts of life of a person and for the whole society. Consequences can be the development of prosocial behaviour, collaboration, and decrease in aggressive behaviour and in perceiving people through stereotypes. These skills can be improved with Equine Assisted Activities, which I further write about in this Thesis. With the inspiration of Natural horsemanship or Equitation Science, it is possible to try to understand horse's cognition, which differs a lot from human perspective. Horses are social animals, which are sensitive for signals from their environment and quick in responses to them. Because they are naturally living in herd hierarchy, they are trying to clear social positions with humans as well. That makes humans to realize their current place in hierarchy and to communicate it. Horse's influence on people is complex and it can affect all parts of their personality, which I describe as bio- psychosocial-spiritual. It is possible to use horse's positive effect for Treatment or Therapy.

The objective of the thesis entitled The Comparison of the Horsemanship Method and the English Riding Style is to characterise the horsemanship method and the English riding style on the basis of literature search, to describe and compare the two methods in the monitored groups of horses as regards the ground work, saddle breaking and under-saddle work, and to generally compare horsemanship and English riding. The literature review describes the characteristics, principles and recommended training practices for the two methods under comparison. The practical part of this thesis compares the two methods of horse training. A comparative report has been created as a supporting tool to assess the training of ten horses. The assessment and subsequent comparison were based on four aspects: the physical and the mental aspects of the horse, the rider's confidence in the horse, and time in order to consider all the factors involved in horse training. Furthermore, the thesis characterises the monitored horses and the training used, providing a comparison for each of the training stages – ground work, saddle breaking and work under saddle. The thesis concludes by providing a general comparison of the two horse training methods. Horsemanship showed better outcomes as regards the physical and the mental aspects of the horse as well as the rider’s confidence in the horse. On the contrary, the horses trained using the English riding style took less time to train. The biggest differences were observed in the early stages of training.

Introduction: Equestrian sport as a competitive sport first began in 1868 at the Royal Dublin Horse Show 1. Injuries, especially minor injuries, are seldom reported, and there are no regulatory requirements anywhere that compel formal injury notification of this sport 2. Objectives: The objectives were to describe a profile of horse riding injuries, to determine the association between the type of equestrian activity and location and mechanism of injury, the association between use and type of equipment and location of injury and to determine anthropometric and history variables associated with location of horse riding injuries. As well as determining if non riding related injuries were associated with riding related injuries in the same sites. Therefore, for the purpose of this study, the following information was gathered in order to build up an injury profile: Anthropometric values (age, height, weight, gender, ethnicity, dominant hand and medical aid) of competitive horse riders in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, The participants horse riding history, Their record of any past or current injuries, Factors associated with previous and current injuries were also investigated, Equipment and facilities used Methods: This study was a quantitative descriptive design, which was questionnaire based and was administered by the researcher at various competitions in KwaZulu Natal or sent via email to those not present at the competitions. The study was limited to adult members of the KwaZulu Natal Horse Society that competed in on the Olympic disciplines of dressage, show jumping and eventing. iv Results: There were 176 respondents to the study. The average age was 36.3 years. The vast majority of participants were White (99.4%) females (81%). The overall prevalence of injury was 90.3%. Muscle strains were the most common type of injury. The head was the most commonly injured site (46.4%), the lower back was the site most likely to be injured many times. Forceful falls were ranked as the most severe type of injury mechanism. Most injuries occurred whilst jumping (63.8%). Use of protective equipment was associated with injury prevention and protection. Muscle strains due to riding were significantly less common in those who presently did regular exercise. Having no medical problems was associated with not having any riding injuries. There was no significant association between riding and non riding related injuries.

Text in English
Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) is a form of Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT) used to treat individuals’ psychological problems. EAP is an interactive process in which a licensed mental health practitioner, a credentialed equine professional and suitable equines work together to address psychotherapy goals. Since the 1990s, research on EAP has grown rapidly in the United States of America (USA) and Europe, however research in the South African context is lacking. This descriptive and exploratory research study explored and described the experiences of licensed mental health practitioners and/or credentialed equine specialists who have included EAP within their practise by focusing on the role that equines play within the psychotherapeutic process. The knowledge of this study was derived from a Constructivistic epistemology. Constructivism argues that humans attain and build knowledge and meaning from their experiences. Participants were selected based on purposeful criterion sampling. Only licensed mental health practitioners or credentialed equine specialists who included EAP within their practise, registered at the Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy Institute of South Africa (EAPISA) or the Equine-Assisted Growth and Learning Association (EAGALA) were considered for participation. Semi-structured, face-to-face interviews were conducted with six participants. A post-interview follow-up email was used to gain additional feedback from each participant. Finally, data was analysed using thematic analysis. As EAP is a fairly new modality of therapy within South Africa, the contribution of this study is to add to the growing body of professional EAP literature. Thematic analysis identified seven main themes: shifting dynamics in the therapeutic relationship, setting the scene for storytelling, the equine as an intermediary and therapeutic tool, what the equine sees is what you get, instantaneous but lasting results, variations and similarities in approach and activities, the emotive motives of EAP practitioners. These themes are discussed in relation to the research findings. Findings of this study showed substantial agreement in what the equine brings to the psychotherapeutic session: unique equine attributes, opportunities for metaphorical learning, and relational aspects. The participants demonstrated a consensus in the belief that EAP can be beneficial to a large spectrum of psychotherapeutic populations in South Africa. A recommendation for future research is for larger, international studies that explore the viewpoints of psychotherapists who practice equine therapies in other countries in order to expand the knowledge base and address the competency and standards discussion in the EAP field.

In the realm of therapeutic horseback riding one becomes aware of the idiosyncratic way in which each unique individual depicts his or her experience of a therapeutic riding endeavor. This study focuses on the meanings attributed to therapeutic riding in the lives of children with cerebral palsy because the complementary use of horses in therapy with these children may be of great importance to the medical fraternity. This exploration investigated the influence of the children's relationship with a horse, and the parents' perception of horseriding as a complementary therapy to occupational- and physiotherapy. The theoretical background and a literature review on therapeutic horseback riding and cerebral palsy were presented in this study. This study followed a holistic, ecosystemic epistemology. Both a qualitative approach and a quantitative approach were adopted as two complementary sides of a more encompassing whole and provided rich descriptions of the context and research process.

Therapeutic horseback riding (THR) uses the horse as a therapeutic apparatus in physical and psychological therapy. This dissertation suggests a more appropriate technique for measuring the effect of THR. A research survey of the statistical methods used to determine the effect of THR was undertaken. Although researchers observed clinically meaningful change in several of the studies, this was not supported by statistical tests. A logistic regression approach is proposed as a solution to many of the problems experienced by researchers on THR. Since large THR related data sets are not available, data were simulated. Logistic regression and t-tests were used to analyse the same simulated data sets, and the results were compared. The advantages of the logistic regression approach are discussed. This statistical technique can be applied in any field where the therapeutic value of an intervention has to be proven scientifically.

Text in Afrikaans with a summary in Afrikaans and English
The motivation for this study was to use animal-assisted therapy to the advantage of the child with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. The purpose of this study was to describe the use of therapeutic horse riding in Gestalt therapy and its influence on the awareness levels of the child with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome that present with Attention deficit/Hyperactivity disorder. For the purpose of this study a quantitative research approach with a descriptive nature was used. Semi-structured interviews were used to compile information about a single child in a therapeutic milieu. This information was combined with information gathered from the literature to compile guidelines for the counsellor. In this study horse riding was effectively combined with Gestalt play therapy to enhance the awareness levels of the child with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome.

Animal-assisted therapy (AAT) and equine-assisted therapy/learning (EAT/L) are innovative techniques in counselling, psychotherapy, mental health, coaching, and other personal growth interventions. Although this field has experienced tremendous growth in the United States, very little is known about its Canadian equivalent. The purpose of this study was therefore to examine the current state of AAT and EAT/L in Canada, by conducting a national, bilingual (English and French) survey of helping professionals who involve animals in their practices. A total of 131 questionnaires were retained for analysis. The results of this study suggest that the field is very diverse, with a multitude of confusing terms and expressions, varying levels of education and training, and disagreement on how different practices are defined, resulting in a fragmented, confusing and inconsistent appearance. Recommendations for the evolution of the field and suggestions for future research are provided.
