Streszczenie:
This dissertation explores American domestic pleasures and duties during the two Gilded Ages that bracket the twentieth century. It draws upon the theoretical work of scholars from several disciplines and analyzes prescriptive and literary sources to create an intellectual history of the idea of pleasure as it appears in home life as well as its consequences. This project reframes domestic pleasures as both "true" insomuch as individuals experience them viscerally, and primarily constructed, in that hegemonic cultural discourses shape experiences of them. I argue that pleasure regulates and restricts individuals both by simultaneously shaping aspirations and manifesting in habits and activities. Since enjoyment of scripted behaviors serves to naturalize them, many seemingly private choices escape interrogation. Ultimately, domestic pleasure establishes a regulative norm that continually reshapes the meanings of homes, families, and even the individual.

By providing substantial grants to public housing authorities to demolish and rebuild distressed public housing and provide services to public housing residents, the HOPE VI program has helped transform these developments and their surrounding communities since 1992. HOPE VI has not only brought public and private investment to distressed neighborhoods but also has played an important role in increasing development capacity for housing authorities and HUD. In spite of the successful completion of many projects in the last decade, arguments have been made that HOPE VI is not only too expensive and too slow but is no longer needed. Housing advocates have also argued that there are programmatic flaws that must be reformed. The Bush Administration has sought to cut HOPE VI from the federal budget for the last four fiscal years. Congress has reinstated it each year, albeit at lower and lower funding levels, but the future of HOPE VI is uncertain at best. As the only funding program specifically designed to meet the needs of distressed public housing and its very low-income residents, HOPE VI is not easily replaced.
(cont.) Despite the challenges, many housing authorities and their partners are attempting to assemble funding for desperately needed public housing redevelopment projects. Interviews with housing authorities, developers, and consultants provide an understanding of the strategies that housing authorities are using to make these "post-HOPE VI" projects work. Housing authorities and their public and private partners have crafted innovations intended to replicate HOPE VI results, but without HOPE VI funds, these projects will only be possible through the piecemeal assembly of public and private funds and are likely to lack the holistic approach and broader vision enabled by HOPE VI. Without seed capital and without the flexibility to be creative, public housing authorities will have a limited ability to build on their entrepreneurial skills, partner with the private sector, and meet the needs of their residents and capital assets. Killing one of the few innovative government programs to emerge in the last decade is a waste and does not bode well for the future of very low-income families-a "HOPE VII" program is needed to build on the public learning achieved during HOPE VI and these early post-HOPE VI efforts.

Background: Hope is a phenomenon that is difficult to define. Hope is experienced in different ways and in different degrees by patients with a terminal illness. The experience of hope interacts with the experience of hopelessness. Hope is important for patients in palliative care and is able to give patients the ability to endure suffering and it is considered as an inner resource that is important to achieve quality of life. Aim: To study patients’ experiences of hope at the end of life. Method: A literature study was made by scientific articles. Ten articles were found and examined. Nine articles were qualitative and one was quantitative. The selected articles were studied and significant units were picked out and developed into categories. Results: The results are presented by symptom relief, independence, relationships, positive attitude, synthesis and acceptance. The results illustrate patients’ experiences of hope and how meaningful hope is at the end of life. Hope is having a good symptom relief, being with family and friends and being independent. Discussion: Patients’ experiences of hope are discussed in relation to other research on patients’ experiences of hope and in relation to the six S words. It also discusses important aspects of how nurses are able to foster patients’ experiences hope.

When humans find themselves in difficult situations, hope can be an important resource. Despite this, hope has the ability to fail you in those crucial moments when it is most needed. The feeling of hopelessness can be a heavy burden and can create immense suffering for the patient. Therefore, it is crucial that the feeling of hopelessness is understood and revealed when prominent so that hope can be encouraged. For patients suffering cancer, support from the community is an important factor to boost hope. By providing personalized and health-promoting care the nurse can contribute towards giving hope nourishment. The purpose of this study is to elucidate hope in caring in patients with breast- or prostate cancer. The method consists of a systematic literature review with an inductive approach. The result shows three different areas that hope is influenced by: the individual, their relationships, and the importance that the caregiver puts on hope. It illustrates how hope can be expressed in these three different categories. The support of friends and family was crucial for the ability to feel hope, developing a sense of meaning, and having a trusting relationship with the nurse. The attitude towards the disease and the self-esteem are also of great importance for the ability to feel hope. Further research is needed to investigate the meaning of hope for elder men.

In-Home Occupational Performance Evaluation [I-HOPE] is an activity card-based assessment instrument developed in USA to assess in-home activity performance and activity barriers for people above 65 years. A pilot group of registered occupational therapists in Sweden has tested the Swedish version of the assessment instrument I-HOPE [I-HOPE/S] in clinical work during the autumn, 2017. Objectives: The objectives of the study were to describe the occupational therapists’ experiences of using the assessment instrument I-HOPE/S in clinical work. Method:  The data sampling was performed through semi-structured interviews. The method applied in the present study consists of a manifest qualitative content analysis with a deductive approach. Results: The results of the study showed that overall I-HOPE/S is a person-centered assessment instrument that promoted satisfactory support to the occupational therapists for further actions. The activity cards were found central in the assessment instrument I-HOPE/S and were helpful in exposing forgotten activities. A limiting aspect of using I-HOPE/S was that a majority of the occupational therapists did not understand how to use the accumulated scores or how assess them. The assessment with I-HOPE/S was time-consuming. Conclusions: The assessment instrument I-HOPE/S has the potential to support occupational therapists in their daily clinical work.

The higher increase in the number of HIV/AIDS patients in the country has necessitated the expansion of Home Based Care (HBC) programmes and has called for the need to strengthen the HBC services in Tanzania. Since scaling up of HBC services is fundamental and the resources dedicated into HBC programs are supposed to be utilized efficiently, the factors hindering the provision of HBC services should be known and resolved. A cross sectional study was applied in studying the factors that influence the provision of HBC services and a quantitative method of data collection and analysis was used. A sample of 8 civil society organisations out of 23 carrying out HBC activities under 'Hope' HBC program were selected, representing organizations from rural and peri urban areas.

This thesis presents the shortcomings of the Fair Use exemption within the Copyright Act through an in depth analysis of the recent Shepard Fairey v. Associated Press surrounding the well-regarded Hope Poster. The thesis critiques the unpredictability of the law, the copyright holder’s growing sense of monopolized ownership over her or his work, the complex facets of art that are overlooked in the court’s legal analysis, and finally, the social justice implications of the Copyright Act. The thesis argues that Fair Use should make room for appropriation art, otherwise successful and progressive artists, such as Shepard Fairey, will be discouraged from creating.

Streszczenie:
The purpose of this research was to explore counsellors' experiences of hope in the counselling relationship in a number of counselling contexts, early in the twenty-first century in the United Kingdom. This research takes place against the background of considerable changes in mental health policy affecting counselling in both England and Wales. The wider political, social-cultural and economic context was marked by recession and uncertainty. A lack of research into counsellors' experiences of hope in the UK context was identified. A phenomenological perspective was taken as appropriate for exploring human experience with a social constructionist approach to the creation of knowledge complementing realist ontology with a pragmatic under pinning. Semi-structured interviews were conducted individually with seven participants chosen using purposive and convenience sampling in both England and Wales from within professional networks and a variety of counselling settings. The transcribed data was analysed using Thematic Analysis and identified themes evidenced with quotations from the data. The main findings were in the context of hope identified as a common human experience. Participants' found difficulty in accessing their experiences of hope and it was found to be an intermittent and liminal experience varying in intensity and part of a meaning making process. Characteristics of this liminality were found to be placing participants at the limit of what they knew, living with uncertainty and waiting for new knowledge to emerge. This created vulnerability for some participants. Hope was also found to be an embodied relational experience within counsellors which they also saw in their clients. Implications of the findings suggested that counsellors could more actively cultivate awareness of their own hope as a resource for clients within an understanding of counselling as a social and liminal process. It is recommended that professional training and Continuing Professional Development workshops provide opportunities for exploring hope in the context of liminality. Future research opportunities include encouraging counsellors to use case study method to explore their own experiences of hope in counselling relationships and that of clients. These findings are presented as specific to this context and not as general truths.

Streszczenie:
The purpose of this study was to develop and test an instrument, the Hope Indicator Questionnaire (HIQ), which was designed to measure the latent variable of hope; and to identify antecedent variables which impact upon hope. A nonexperimental study with four-week test-retest was designed to examine the psychometric properties of the HIQ. Reliability of the HIQ was tested by 4-week stability. Internal consistency reliability was also performed on the HIQA. Validity of the HIQ was examined by content validity, exploratory factor analysis, convergence, and predictive causal model testing. Data were collected and analyzed from 111 subjects who did not have life threatening health problems during their study participation. Sixty (54%) were female, 83 (75%) were religious believers. The majority (66%) were Caucasian. The age ranged from 18 to 79, with the mean age of 38.95 (S.D. = 16.12). Results showed that low stabilities were found in the HIQP and HIQB (.52 and .45). Stability coefficient and internal consistency for the HIQA were .71 and .92. Satisfactory content validity of the HIQA was demonstrated by a three-member panel. The exploratory factor analysis confirmed that a latent factor was extracted from the three scales in the HIQ. Convergent validity was established by satisfactory correlations with the Herth Hope Scale (HHS) (.58) and Beck's Hopelessness Scale (HS) (-.42). The proposed predictive model was partially supported by the study when perceived functional support was measured by a modified Shang's Perceived Functional Support measure. Antecedents for both HIQ and HHS hope were explored. Personal control and perceived functional support were direct antecedents for HIQ hope while HHS hope was directly affected by personal control and chance control. Other variables (i.e. support network, religion and demographics) were indirect antecedents to HIQ and HHS hope through those direct antecedents. Additional analysis was accomplished on comparisons of the HIQ and HHS, and a qualitative content analysis was done on the first five hopes identified by the subjects. In conclusion, the HIQ had low reliability. Possible resources contributing to this low reliability were discussed. Results related to the HIQ measure should be interpreted with caution although the convergence of the HIQ with the HHS and HS was supported.

Baloyi, Hope. "Algae liquefaction / Hope Baloyi". Thesis, North-West University, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/8153.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
The liquefaction of algae for the recovery of bio–oil was studied. Algae oil is a non–edible feedstock and has minimal impact on food security and food prices; furthermore, it has been identified as a favourable feedstock for the production of biodiesel and this is attributed to its high oil yield per hectare. Algae oil can be potentially used for fuel blending for conventional diesel. The recovery step for algae oil for the production of biodiesel is costly and demands a lot of energy due to the high water content and size of the algae organism. In this study hydrothermal liquefaction was used for the recovery of oil from algae biomass. Hydrothermal liquefaction uses high water activity in sub–critical water conditions to convert wet biomass to liquid fuel which makes the process more cost effective than pyrolysis and gasification in terms of energy savings on biomass drying costs. The main objective of this study was to determine suitable liquefaction reaction conditions (reaction temperature, biomass loading and reaction atmosphere) for producing bio–oil from algae and identifying the effects of these conditions on bio–oil yield and properties. Bio–oil properties are a good indication of the quality of the oil product and the significance of the liquefaction reaction conditions. The experiments were carried out in a SS316 stainless steel high pressure autoclave. An environmental scanning electron microscope with integrated energy dispersive spectroscopy was used for the characterisation of the raw algae biomass. The algae biomass was liquefied in water at various temperatures ranging from 280 to 360°C, at different biomass loadings (3 to 9 wt %) and a 5 wt% potassium hydroxide (KOH) for all experiments. The reaction time was held constant at 30 minutes in all experiments performed under CO2 and N2 atmospheres. Chloroform was used to recover the bio–oil oil from the reaction mixture following liquefaction, and the bio–oil was purified by removing chloroform using a vacuum distillation process. The bio–oil sample was methylated to the fatty methyl esters using trimethyl sulfonium hydroxide solution to determine its composition using gas chromatography. The elemental composition of the bio–oil was analysed using a Flash 2000 organic analyser. The main organic components of the bio–oil were determined using Fourier–transform infrared (FT–IR) spectroscopy. The oil yield was found to be dependent on reaction temperature and biomass loading when liquefaction was done in an inert environment, showing a significant increase at high temperatures and biomass ii loadings. Biomass loading had no significant influence on bio–oil yields at high temperatures in a reducing atmosphere and an average oil yield of 25.28 wt% and 20.91 wt% was obtained under a CO2 atmosphere and a N2 atmosphere at 360°C, respectively. Higher yields of C16 fatty acid were obtained at 320°C at a 3 wt% biomass loading in a CO2 atmosphere. The FTIR analyses showed the presence of oxygenated compounds such as phenols, ketones, aldehydes and ethers. The bio–oil had a reduced O/C ratio as compared to that in the original feedstock, with improved heating values. The reduction in the O/C ratio in the bio–oil indicated that deoxygenation occurred during liquefaction and that the bio–oil produced has good properties for combustion. This study indicates that the bio–oil is well suited for further processing to biodiesel because of the high C16 fatty acid content. Hydrothermal liquefaction could thus be a feasible method for producing bio–oil from Scenedesmus acutus.

Streszczenie:

I would like to think that I chose this study to add to the literature on human development in the prison system. However, I would have to say that the study chose me. It became a deep discovery of what is required for human beings to grow within the context of a prison setting and afterwards in the community. The study explored the life history of an Aboriginal woman once considered to be a volatile, violent, and unmanageable female prisoner by the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC). Changing her life she became a valued volunteer within that prison system.

Human growth and development must be considered with attention to the exogenous influences of all the systems people have to negotiate. I walked with Lora for 14 years: 7 while in custody and 7 afterwards until her death in 2013. During that time she became a mother, a volunteer, peer researcher, cancer patient, and always a teacher.

Since the 1970s there has been a pervasive decline in recognizing rehabilitation potential in people with lives plagued by addictions and the crimes supporting them. I observed the opposite: hundreds of lives changed for the better. There are interventions that kindle the flame and support a fire in people to build a healthy, productive life. Society has a responsibility to fan that fire, rather than feeding the despondency and hopelessness so prevalent in our prisons.

Information was gathered from interviews with Lora, video and audio recordings, her journals and poetry. Interviews were also conducted with family to gain clarity of her childhood and complex trauma history and with people who walked with her after prison to elucidate her change process.

The study encompassed literature from modern, post-modern, and Aboriginal epistemology, integrating theory from multiple disciplines. What emerged was how powerful the deleterious influences of complex childhood trauma are, in all domains, over the life span. Counteracting this damage most significantly are the mechanisms of hope and the inspiration of believing in the possibility for successful and lasting change: This is the key-stone to the archway through which people re-enter the community from prison.

This portfolio thesis comprises of three parts: a systematic literature review, an empirical report and appendices. Part one is a systematic literature review in which literature relating to the empirical paper is reviewed. Insufficient studies into hope in cardiac populations exist so the search was broadened to hope in chronic physical illness. The review attempts to determine what the strongest and most consistent correlated variables with hope are in chronic illness populations. Links to theory and recommendations for future research are then made. Part two is an empirical paper which includes two complementary studies. Study one aimed to test the hypothesis, what are the statistical predictors of hope. A range of variables were assessed to allow regression analysis with hope as the predicted variable. Study two explored the experiences of individuals living with cardiovascular disease and what made them hopeful about the future. The results of the two studies were formulated together to propose an understanding of the predictive processes present in hope. Part three comprises appendices and a reflective statement which draws on personal experience of and reflection on the research process.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
Hope is the leitmotiv of Jürgen Moltmann’s theology. Not merely one aspect of his project, hope is the whole of it, the supreme doctrine interpenetrating all others. Indeed, hope is his method. The following study is entitled ‘Theology as Hope’, a play on words intended to convey two meanings, simultaneously. First, the three-word dictum correctly labels Moltmann’s entire project. While his theology is correctly regarded as eschatological, there is a more specific, identifiable centre: it is a pronouncement of hope from beginning to end. The second meaning of the title, which is clarified and specified by the subtitle, describes the content of the present study. In the pages following, Moltmann’s theology is explored from the angle of his doctrine of hope. The present exploration seeks to show the nature, composition and development of Moltmann’s hope through two pursuits: one primary, one secondary. The primary method, pursued throughout, is a chronological exploration of Moltmann’s doctrine of hope, as the distinctive doctrine of his theology. The secondary method, pursued primarily in Part II, investigates the implications, or effect, his doctrine of hope has on his theology, as he develops it. Part I establishes Moltmann’s doctrine of hope as grounded in God’s faithfulness in the cross and resurrection. Part II investigates major doctrines in his programme in light of this ground. This procedure offers at least two advantages: (1) it allows a, construction and definition of his doctrine of hope to be formed without a composition of hope being imposed from the outside; (2) it allows the reader to follow Moltmann’s theology in the order in which he wrote, instead of arbitrarily assigning an order to the topics.

Many Zimbabweans experienced its 18 April 1980 independence of Zimbabwe as ushering in an era of hope. However, it is shown that events like Operations Murambatsvina and Makavhotasei, the Land Reform Program, and the Economic Structural Adjustment Program significantly and negatively impacted on the initial hope of independence. The study traces and explores the potential of Moltmann’s work on hope for the Zimbabwean context. It is concluded that Moltmann’s work can make a constructive contribution the meta-discourse on hope in Zimbabwe. This is specifically the case with reference to the way in which Moltmann’s theology of hope integrates the role of history, God’s promise in a comprehensive eschatological framework, grounded in his Christology.

Streszczenie:
Family members have been observed to cope with the losses inherent in terminal illness by grieving. Little is known, however, about the factors which influence their grieving before the death of a significant other. This paper describes an exploratory, cross-sectional, correlational study designed to examine the relationships among general coping style, hope, and anticipatory grief in a convenience sample of 61 family members of individuals with terminal cancer. The organizing framework for this study was based on grief theory, Lazarus and Folkman's (1984) theory of stress and coping, and Davies, Reimer, and Martens' (1990) transition framework. Data were collected by a four-part questionnaire comprising the Jalowiec Coping Scale (Jalowiec, 1987), the Herth Hope Index (Herth, 1991), the Non-Death Version of the Grief Experience Inventory (Sanders, Mauger, & Strong, 1985), and a background information sheet developed by the researcher. Findings revealed that family members experienced individual anticipatory grief patterns. Women experienced more despair and anger/hostility than men. Adult children, more highly educated family members, individuals not living with the ill person, and non-primary caregivers expressed more anger/hostility. Multiple regression results showed that emotive coping and hope accounted for significant proportions of the variance in despair, somatization, and loss of control. Emotive coping contributed significant variation in anger/hostility, whereas lack of hope accounted for a significant amount of the variation in social isolation. Neither the general coping styles nor hope significantly predicted death anxiety. Suggestions for research and nursing were indicated.

Through the experiences and perspectives of clients, direct service workers, and policymakers, I endeavor to tell the story of transitioning from chronic homelessness to stable housing, identifying this as a uniquely unstable period and documenting a need for increased attention on both the trauma of homelessness and the tumultuous transition to housing, in an effort to support clients towards stable housing, and ideally a point of thriving. The thesis makes five key points. First, homelessness is a manifestation of structural inequities, not individual deficiencies, and, as such, is best addressed through policy. Like an iceberg, the causes of homelessness exist beneath the surface, and include housing market inefficiencies, wage stagnation, a diminished social safety net, social reproduction theory, racism, and the financial and power inequalities of capitalism. Second, homelessness is traumatic, including five categories of trauma: trauma wrought by power relationships, physical trauma, emotional trauma, trauma wrought by other systems, and trauma wrought by instability. More psychological research may improve efforts to prevent and respond to trauma within services targeting the homeless and newly housed. Third, housing is the solution to homelessness, and yet, fourth, the transition to housing is traumatic in its own rite. Viewing housing purely as a solution neglects the trauma of homelessness and turmoil of this transition, and may accordingly fuel cyclical homelessness. This transition is complicated by three challenges: change and new responsibilities, loss of programmatic supports, and loss of social supports. Questions remain as to whether and how to support the integration of the newly housed into their new communities. Finally, as individuals transition from chronic homelessness to stable housing, thriving, an evolving concept, is tentatively defined here as engaging in reciprocal volunteer work, deepening bonds with family, and lending leadership and expertise towards efforts to fight homelessness. With admiration and hope, I note the innovative programs already in place in Boston and humbly suggest considerations for next steps. People who have been homeless have demonstrated resilience in the face of deep tragedy. When stably housed, society can benefit even more from their contributions.

Streszczenie:
Code decomposition (also known as functional decomposition) is the process of breaking a larger problem into smaller subproblems so that each function implements only a single task. Although code decomposition is integral to computer science, it is often overlooked in introductory computer science education due to the challenges of teaching it given limited resources. Earthworm is a tool that generates unique suggestions on how to improve the decomposition of provided Python source code. Given a program as input, Earthworm presents the user with a list of suggestions to improve the functional decomposition of the program. Each suggestion includes the lines of code that can be refactored into a new function, the arguments that must be passed to this function and the variables returned from the function. The tool is intended to be used in introductory computer science courses to help students learn more about decomposition. Earthworm generates suggestions by converting Python source code into a control flow graph. Static analysis is performed on the control flow graph to direct the generation of suggestions based on code slices.

Objective: To complete an integrative review of the studies on pediatric chronic illness utilizing the Children's Hope Scale to determine the association between hope and thechronically ill child. Method: A comprehensive review of PubMed, PsycINFO, Academic Search Complete, CINAHL, The Cochrane Library, ProQuest, and Dissertations Theses was completed. Titles were reviewed, selected abstracts were then assessed, and full papers were obtained. Results: Ten studies were found which met the specified inclusion criteria: participants less than or equal to 19 years of age, an illness of more than three months in duration, and hope measured by the Children's Hope Scale. The studies found some support for the positive effect of hope for children with chronic illness, but more research needs to be done with larger samples. Conclusion: This integrative review supports the positive impact of hope on the chronically ill child and the need for additional research on the role of hope in the chronically ill child.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
The purpose of this study was to determine hope’s unique role, if any, in predicting persistence in a developmental writing course. Perceived academic self-efficacy was also included as a variable of interest for comparison because self-efficacy has been more widely studied than hope in terms of its non-cognitive role in predicting academic outcomes. A significant body of research indicates that self-efficacy influences academic motivation to persist and academic performance. Hope, however, is an emerging psychological construct in the study of non-cognitive factors that influence college outcomes and warrants further exploration in higher education. This study examined the predictive value of hope and self-efficacy on persistence in a developmental writing course. The research sample was obtained from a community college in the southeastern United States. Participants were 238 students enrolled in developmental writing courses during their first year of college. Participants were given a questionnaire that included measures for perceived academic self-efficacy and hope. The self-efficacy scale asked participants to self-report on their beliefs about how they cope with different academic tasks in order to be successful. The hope scale asked students to self-report on their beliefs about their capability to initiate action towards a goal (“agency”) and create a plan to attain these goals (“pathways”). This study utilized a correlational research design. A statistical association was estimated between hope and self-efficacy as well as the unique variance contributed by each on course persistence. Correlational analysis confirmed a significant relationship between hope and perceived academic self-efficacy, and a Fisher’s z-transformation confirmed a stronger relationship between the agency component of hope and perceived academic self-efficacy than for the pathways component. A series of multinomial logistic regression analyses were conducted to assess if (a) perceived self-efficacy and hope predict course persistence, (b) hope independent of self-efficacy predicts course persistence, and (c) if including the interaction of perceived self-efficacy and hope predicts course persistence. It was found that hope was only significant independent of self-efficacy. Some implications for future research are drawn for those who lead and coordinate academic support initiatives in student and academic affairs.
