The hopelessness theory of depression hypothesizes the existence of a distinct subtype of depression, hopelessness depression, that may be identified by its unique symptom profile as well as by its specific etiology, course, and response to treatment. The goal of the current study was to examine the symptom component of the hopelessness theory in a sample of schoolchildren between the ages of 7 and 13. Three-hundred-and-seventy-three participants completed measures of hopelessness and depressive symptomatology. Hopelessness was significantly associated with all six hypothesized symptoms of hopelessness depression (100%) but with only two of the four non-hopelessness depression symptoms (50%). Further, when symptoms were evaluated in combination, hopelessness depression symptoms exhibited a significantly greater association with hopelessness than did non-hopelessness depression symptoms. An exploratory factor analysis revealed that symptoms that were associated with hopelessness formed independent factors when compared to symptoms not associated with hopelessness. Overall, the results provide strong support for the symptom component of the hopelessness theory in children.

The diathesis-stress component hypothesis and the mediational role of hopelessness proposed by the hopelessness theory of depression were tested using data from a 16-week longitudinal study of Chinese university undergraduates. Participants (N = 240) completed self-report measures assessing attributional style, negative life events, hopelessness, and hopelessness depression symptoms at 3 time points. The diathesis-stress hypothesis was tested using the latent growth curve model and results showed that as postulated in the hopelessness theory, depressogenic attributional style predicted hopelessness depression following the occurrence of negative life events. Specifically, hopelessness played a partial mediating role in the etiological chain of hopelessness depression.

Introduction: Hopelessness was a negative feelings about goal achievement and powerlessness feeling against an expectation. Hopelessness in stroke survivors can occur due to prolonged disability and neurologic defi cit. This condition can lead to emotional and mental disorders even a suicide action. Therefore, it was a need to explore hopelessness experience in stroke survivors. Method: This study was a qualitative descriptive phenomenology with 6 participants. Results: 7 themes were revealed in this study, (1) Physical changes as a response on hopelessness, (2) Loss response as a hopelessness stressor, (3) Dysfunction of the family process, (4) Loss of meaning of life, (5) Self support and motivation as a coping resource against hopelessness, (6) The spiritual meaning behind hopelessness, (7) Can go through a better life. Abstract Despite being a risk factor for cardiovascular disease, suicidal ideation, and mortality among U.S. older adults, research on hopelessness and how it changes over time are lacking. Although hopelessness generally increases with age, levels of hopelessness may be influenced by race/ethnicity and social or economic factors. This study uses longitudinal data from 8,359 individuals from the Health and Retirement Study to examine race differences in trajectories of hopelessness from 2006 to 2018. We used linear mixed models to estimate trajectories of hopelessness for blacks, whites and Hispanics age 51 and older. The model was fit with a natural spline cubic function to model changes in time trends of hopelessness and the interaction between time and race. Models controlled for demographic characteristics, socioeconomic status, health status, and psychosocial factors that influence hopelessness. We found that older Hispanics have the highest levels of hopelessness, followed by non-Hispanic blacks and non-Hispanic whites. Trajectories of hopelessness were non-linear and differed by race. For older whites, hopelessness increased from 2006-2010 and then decreased until 2018. For older blacks, it decreased the entire time period but did so at a decreasing rate; and, for older Hispanics, hopelessness decreased from 2006-2012 and then increased thereafter. Our study shows that hopelessness generally decreased over time among older adults between 2006 and 2018 in race-specific ways, despite generally increasing with age. These findings suggest that race, age and period effects differentially influence trajectories of hopelessness. Factors contributing to these differences may be related to concurrent social and economic conditions.

This study examines how hopelessness impacts youth engagement in violent behavior over time. The data are from waves I and II of The National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health). Poisson regression was used to analyze contributors to violence in just wave I, and then again across time in wave II using explanatory and control variables from wave I. Results indicate that hopelessness is positively associated with violent behavior. Furthermore, while hopelessness and most of the other explanatory variables predicted violent behavior in wave I, almost all the variables became non-significant or negative except hopelessness and a measure of community when predicting violence in wave II. This shows that hopelessness is a concept that needs to be explored more closely when studying violence among youth.

Entrepreneurship is seen as the main factor of development and growth in all countries. Therefore, numerous studies related to entrepre­neurship are performed. The studies aimed at the factors that affect entre­preneurship usually pursued the way that the occurrence of entrepreneurial intention is explained by positive premises. This study was carried out by starting from the idea that there can be negative factors influencing the entrepreneurial intention such as hopelessness, helplessness, haplessness, and nepotism. In this context, a survey was conducted with the students from universities located in the provinces in eastern Turkey. According to the results of the study, the feeling of hopelessness and haplessness has no influence over entrepreneurial intention. It is concluded that the feeling of helplessness affects the entrepreneurial intention adversely while nepotism influences it positively. In light of the findings, some recommendations were made to decision makers.

In this 2021 Nulungu Reconciliation lecture, Dr Robert Isaacs AM OAM will explore the meaning of reconciliation and the lessons of his personal journey in two worlds. As part of the Stolen Generation, and born at the dawn of the formal Aboriginal Rights Movement, this lecture outlines the changing social attitudes through the eyes of the lived experience and the evolving national policy framework that has sought to manage, then heal, the wounds that divided a nation. Aspirations of self-determination, assimilation and reconciliation are investigated to unpack the intent versus the outcome, and why the deep challenges not only still exist, but in some locations the divide is growing. The Kimberley is an Aboriginal rights location of global relevance with Noonkanbah at the beating heart. The Kimberley now has 93 percent of the land determined through Native Title yet the Kimberley is home to extreme disadvantage, abuse and hopelessness. Our government agencies are working “nine-to-five” but our youth, by their own declaration, are committing suicide out of official government hours. The theme of the Kimberley underpins this lecture. Bullying among adolescents has been identified as a significant public health concern. It is a life-changing experience that has drastically affected more than a third of adolescents in schools globally. There are important negative consequences to victims, perpetrators, schools, families and communities at large. Several studies have shown that victims of bullying are at increased odds of adverse outcomes including physical health problems, emotional and behavioural problems, and psychiatric disorders. At the mental health level, evidence has linked being a victim of bullying to higher rates of depression, insomnia, feelings of hopelessness, loneliness, low self-esteem, suicide ideation and suicide attempts8. Due to the potential mental health effects on everyone involved, it’s important to heed the warning signs of bullying and to highlight intervention and prevention strategies. This webinar sought to understand the impact of bullying on mental health, the mental health of those who experience and witness it and to identifying intervention and prevention strategies.
