Lakeside Cave deposits spanning the last 5,000 years contain evidence of grasshopper (Melanoplus sanguinipes) use. Abundant ethnographic/ethnohistoric data suggest the widespread use of hoppers and other insects. Procurement strategies may be unique to the Great Salt Lake area. During the summer, salted and sun-dried hoppers are washed up on beaches and form windrows up to .2 m× 1.5 m× 15 km Hoppers produce over 3,010 kcal/ kg, and return rates average 272,649 kcal/hour. Digestible proportions have not been determined, but even at a return rate well below the experimental value, optimality models suggest hopper collection should be favored over all other collected resources.

This first publication of the newly-found letter to Gandhi from Dietrich Bonhoeffer is a window into his thinking in the early 1930s, a time of personal formation and of resistance to National Socialism. Western Christianity needed ‘a Christian peace movement’, and Bonhoeffer wanted to learn from Gandhi's movement ‘the meaning of Christian life, of real community life, of truth and love in reality’. The letter includes Bonhoeffer's critique of Western culture and the Church in Europe and America, his hopes for a Church regenerated by the Sermon on the Mount, and his appreciation and critique of Karl Barth

Abstract The price of stocks is a good indication of investors’ expectations for the evolution of capital markets, comprising their fears and hopes regarding future developments. The information regarding a disruptive event such as a military attack spreads rapidly across countries affecting investors’ perceptions and causing them to sell their stocks and target safer investments. The scientific literature on the topic is growing lately due to the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian war and its consequences. The research paper investigates the impact of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on the capital markets from the Central and Eastern European region using the event study methodology. The paper studies the abnormal returns recorded by each capital market on the event day (February 24, 2022), as well as the cumulative abnormal returns for 6-day, 11-day and 16-day event windows following the attack. The findings show that most of the capital markets recorded sharp declines on the event-day, reaching a negative abnormal return event of 10% on February 24. For the longer event windows the negative impact persisted through cumulative abnormal returns recorded for most of the markets. The highest declines were recorded on the 6-day and 11-day event windows as all capital markets considered incorporating the bad news of the war outbreak and lost the initial hope of being a disinformation or a short-term military attack. Within 35 trading days following the invasion, 64% of the markets rebounded and returned to their pre-attack level. However, 4 capital markets recorded more than 200 trading days with a level lower than the one registered before the invasion. The paper contributes to literature extending the studies of capital markets’ behavior during military conflicts focusing on neighboring countries.

Streszczenie:
The article represents the interpretation of the novel "Windows on the World" by the modern French writer Frédéric Beigbeder from the point of view of the biblical code. The author of the article distinguishes two levels of the presence of biblical components: explicit and implicit. The author inventories the Old Testament and New Testament images and motifs marked in the work, and she determines their functionality. The author proves that it is the components of the biblical code that perform content-creating and form-creating functions in the novel. The biblical code defines the structure of the novel as parabolic and deepens its dystopian content, giving it an eschatological dominant. The author pays special attention to the transformation of the biblical story about the Tower of Babel in the novel. The author proves that the Old Testament motifs of creation and destruction, which are associated with the image of the Tower of Babel, characterize the consequences of economic and cultural globalization in the novel by Frédéric Beigbeder and acquire an apocalyptic dimension. The writer assigns a special role in the process of globalization to marketing as a means of promoting mass culture, which produces a profaned image of the world and brings humanity closer to its end. The author analyzes the novel’s intertextual connections, which are related to its biblical code. The image of the Catcher from the novel "The Catcher in the Rye" by J. David Salinger deepens the semantics of the biblical code in the novel "Windows on the World." The writer demonstrates that the messianism of the "broken generation" of America, which was represented by JD Salinger, later turned into "superheroism", and the path of spiritual ascent was profaned by the construction of skyscrapers. The author proves that with the help of the biblical code, the writer builds his own eschatological vision of the world, which deviates from the metanarratives of Christianity and globalism and takes away humanity’s last hopes. The apocalypse that Frédéric Beigbeder recreates in the novel "Windows on the World" provides redemption, but it does not guarantee salvation. His "Savior" reminds mankind only of death and it does not promise eternal life to anyone.

Early in George Eliot'sDaniel Deronda, Daniel's life is set on a decisive new path by his fleeting attraction to an object in a shop window. He is turning into a side street off Holburn Road when:his attention was caught by some fine old clasps in chased silver displayed in the window at his right hand. His first thought was that [his aunt] Lady Mallinger, who had a strictly Protestant taste for such Catholic spoils, might like to have these missal-clasps turned into a bracelet; then his eyes travelled over the other contents of the window, and he saw that the shop was that kind of pawnbroker's where the lead is given to jewellery, lace, and all equivocal objects introduced asbric-a-brac. A placard in one corner announced –Watches and Jewellery exchanged and repaired. (344; bk. 4, ch. 6)Daniel then moves across the street to avoid the shopkeeper, and it is only from this new vantage point that he notices the name “Ezra Cohen” above the window – the name he's been seeking while wandering Jewish neighborhoods in London in the hopes of reuniting his protégée Mirah with her family. He will return to the pawnshop later and become acquainted with the Cohens, eventually finding through them his mentor and Mirah's actual brother, Mordecai. Although some discussion of the silver clasps ensues, they are neither purchased nor used in the space of the novel. Still, this seemingly inconsequential trinket proves to have a long history, one that raises questions about the lingering remains of the past, the equivocality of the object, and the dispossessions that hauntDaniel Deronda.

Antibody–drug conjugates (ADCs), with antibodies targeted against specific antigens linked to cytotoxic payloads, offer the opportunity for a more specific delivery of chemotherapy and other bioactive payloads to minimize side effects. First approved in the setting of HER2+ breast cancer, more recent ADCs have been developed for triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) and, most recently, hormone receptor-positive (HR+) breast cancer. While antibody–drug conjugates have compared favorably against traditional chemotherapy in some settings, patients eventually progress on these therapies and require a change in treatment. Mechanisms to explain the resistance to ADCs are highly sought after, in hopes of developing next-line treatment options and expanding the therapeutic windows of existing therapies. These resistance mechanisms are categorized as follows: change in antigen expression, change in ADC processing and resistance, and efflux of the ADC payload. This paper reviews the recently published literature on these mechanisms as well as potential options to overcome these barriers.

Autosomal recessive genetic forms (DFNB) account for most cases of profound congenital deafness. Adeno-associated virus (AAV)-based gene therapy is a promising therapeutic option, but is limited by a potentially short therapeutic window and the constrained packaging capacity of the vector. We focus here on the otoferlin gene underlying DFNB9, one of the most frequent genetic forms of congenital deafness. We adopted a dual AAV approach using two different recombinant vectors, one containing the 5′ and the other the 3′ portions of otoferlin cDNA, which exceed the packaging capacity of the AAV when combined. A single delivery of the vector pair into the mature cochlea ofOtof−/−mutant mice reconstituted the otoferlin cDNA coding sequence through recombination of the 5′ and 3′ cDNAs, leading to the durable restoration of otoferlin expression in transduced cells and a reversal of the deafness phenotype, raising hopes for future gene therapy trials in DFNB9 patients.

ABSTRACTThis paper advances the concept of a policy conspiracy – perpetrators strive together to steer the policy process in a direction which they believe to be worthwhile and possible. A policy conspiracy is conceived as an exclusive social network of policy participants who commit themselves to the advancement of a policy quest which embodies their shared hopes and who promote one another to positions of influence on the basis of the mutual trust they develop through regular interaction. The degree to which the network of technocrats, technopols and change agents who played a pivotal role in the implementation and consolidation of the ‘New Zealand experiment’ between 1984 and 1993 exhibit these characteristics is considered. By examining the way this policy conspiracy took advantage of a significant window of opportunity for reform, this paper seeks to make a contribution to the literature concerned with the conditions for radical policy reform.

Contemporary Latin American and Latinx artists who engage with pre-Hispanic and early colonial book histories have adapted the materials, formats, or iconographies of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century books and objects of knowledge transfer. Although the resulting artworks are as wildly varied as the idea of the book itself, they constitute forms of decolonial praxis in their desire to reclaim or reassign agency in historical narratives; uncover, criticize, or dismantle structures of inequity; or preserve, re-create, and cocreate knowledge. Artists’ remixes and renewals are not derivative or motivated by a simple desire to preserve the past. Some have reclaimed pre-Hispanic techniques to tell new stories, or they have reimagined the book altogether, abandoning its conventional structures and transmuting pre- and postconquest iconographies into murals, sculpture, film, or more conceptual/hybrid works. Contemporary artists have also looked to early colonial books as windows into Indigenous experiences of the conquest, amplifying those perspectives while relating them to recent sociopolitical realities and their hopes for the future. The artists discussed in this essay include Mariana Castillo Deball (Mexico), Sandy Rodriguez (United States), Carlos Colín (Mexico), Estefanía Peñafiel Loaiza (Ecuador), Falco (Ecuador), Andrés Pereira Paz (Bolivia), and Cecilia Vicuña (Chile).

The only early Jewish author to have written a surviving description of what his contemporaries believed about the afterlife was Josephus, yet his testimonies about the afterlife are complex historical, literary, and apologetic descriptions. They cannot be immediately corroborated by contemporary writings; nor should they be exclusively categorized as a purely Hellenizing literary construction that had no relationship to actual Jewish eschatological beliefs. To understand his testimonies to the afterlife, it is ultimately necessary to address how Josephus wrote about the afterlife. This chapter argues that his treatment of the afterlife can be reasonably explained as an apologetic cultural translation that made use of established doxographic and ethnographic techniques. His descriptions of the afterlife are, thus, an important window into his own compositional methods. In translating Jewish eschatological hopes into the categories of Hellenistic philosophy, Josephus also anticipates the strategies of later Christian apologists.

Like the medieval English cathedrals that inspired it, the Princeton University Chapel is an architectural achievement designed to evoke wonder, awe, and reflection. This book is the essential illustrated guide to this magnificent architectural and cultural landmark. Now with new color photos throughout, the book traces the history of the chapel and describes its architecture, sculpture, woodwork, and furnishings. The author knew the building from its planning stages through its construction, dedication, and long use. This book offers unique insights into the vision of architect Ralph Adams Cram and the artistry of Charles J. Connick, who designed the chapel's breathtaking cycle of stained-glass windows. The book gives readers an opportunity to enjoy the chapel as both an aesthetically beautiful structure and a moving religious statement. It reveals how the building's composition is meant to provide spiritual access to as many seekers as possible and instill in them an extraordinary message of hope. The book is a guided tour of an inspiring structure that has served as the spiritual home to one of America's leading universities.

Climate change and its global impact on all people, especially the marginalized communities, is widely recognized as the biggest crisis of our time. It is a context that invites all subjects and disciplines to bring their resources in diagnosing the problem and seeking the healing of the Earth. The African continent, especially its women, constitute the subalterns of global climate crisis. Can they speak? If they speak, can they be heard? Both the Earth and the Africa have been identified with the adjective “Mother.” This gender identity tells tales in patriarchal and imperial worlds that use the female gender to signal legitimation of oppression and exploitation. In this volume, African women theologians and their female-identifying colleagues, struggle with reading and interpreting religious texts in the context of environmental crisis that are threatening life on Earth. The chapters interrogate how biblical texts and African cultural resources imagine the Earth and our relationship with the Earth: Do these texts offer readers windows of hope for re-imagining liberating relationship with the Earth? How do they intersect with gender, race, empire, ethnicity, sexuality among others? Beginning with Genesis, journeying through Exodus, Ruth, Ecclesiastes and the Gospel of John, the authors seek to read in solidarity with the Earth, for the healing of the whole Earth community.

Drawing upon a personal collection of more than 300 letters exchanged between her parents and other family members across the U.S.-Mexico border, Miroslava Chávez-García recreates and gives meaning to the hope, fear, and longing migrants experienced in their everyday lives both "here" and "there" (aqui y alla). As private sources of communication hidden from public consumption and historical research, the letters provide a rare glimpse into the deeply emotional, personal, and social lives of ordinary Mexican men and women as recorded in their immediate, firsthand accounts. Chávez-García demonstrates not only how migrants struggled to maintain their sense of humanity in el norte but also how those remaining at home made sense of their changing identities in response to the loss of loved ones who sometimes left for weeks, months, or years at a time, or simply never returned. With this richly detailed account, ranging from the Mexican Revolution of the 1910s to the emergence of Silicon Valley in the late 1960s, Chávez-García opens a new window onto the social, economic, political, and cultural developments of the day and recovers the human agency of much maligned migrants in our society today.

Following the trails of Hawai'i's snails to explore the simultaneously biological and cultural significance of extinction. In this time of extinctions, the humble snail rarely gets a mention. And yet snails are disappearing faster than any other species. In A World in a Shell, Thom van Dooren offers a collection of snail stories from Hawai'i—once home to more than 750 species of land snails, almost two-thirds of which are now gone. Following snail trails through forests, laboratories, museums, and even a military training facility, and meeting with scientists and Native Hawaiians, van Dooren explores ongoing processes of ecological and cultural loss as they are woven through with possibilities for hope, care, mourning, and resilience. Van Dooren recounts the fascinating history of snail decline in the Hawaiian Islands: from deforestation for agriculture, timber, and more, through the nineteenth century shell collecting mania of missionary settlers, and on to the contemporary impacts of introduced predators. Along the way he asks how both snail loss and conservation efforts have been tangled up with larger processes of colonization, militarization, and globalization. These snail stories provide a potent window into ongoing global process of environmental and cultural change, including the largely unnoticed disappearance of countless snails, insects, and other less charismatic species. Ultimately, van Dooren seeks to cultivate a sense of wonder and appreciation for our damaged planet, revealing the world of possibilities and relationships that lies coiled within a snail's shell.

Abstract The emergence of the 2019 pandemic of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus disease (COVID 19)has triggered movements of people from urban areas to rural areas. This movement is also opening a window of opportunity for strengthening rural areas and fostering the development of rural areas worldwide. It is a potential opportunity for rural development because it can motivate concerted efforts towards achieving sustainable development in rural areas. The incursion of this virus disaster (i.e. the COVID 19 pandemic) is unmasking the vulnerabilities of the urban areas and the resilience of the rural areas. The challenge posed by the pandemic is revealing that the urban areas cannot keep the development promises rural migrants to have always believed they would achieve. Longterm sustainability oriented thinking and practices are needed, and rural focused development innovations must be sought. The material and immaterial values of rural areas must now be recognized and considered in the development of nations. These are necessary to tap into the opportunities presented by the reverse migration being experienced in certain countries of the world. This chapter posits forward looking statements on these rural issues.

An overview of the challenges facing colleges of education in providing meaningful and relevant clinical experiences to pre-service teachers enrolled in online distance education courses is discussed and serves as the impetus of WiTL. In the chapter, the authors explain the methods and technology used by the researchers to demonstrate the project’s practical duplicability in almost any course with clinical requirements. Furthermore, the authors provide a glimpse into the potential impact of WiTL as a means of facilitating meaningful field experiences in distance education and traditional coursework, as well as corollary benefits realized for student participants and mentor teachers.

Abstract The care of patients with acute ischemic stroke has rapidly changed in domains of diagnostic expediency and options for management. Coordinated multidisciplinary specialty care, improving technology, and favorable outcomes in clinical trials have increased the number of patients eligible for intervention by both systemic thrombolytic therapy and directed mechanical clot retrieval. The extended time window for reperfusion of cerebrovascular flow has subsequently increased salvage of the ischemic penumbra, decreasing overall infarct size and improving patient functional outcomes. The advances in mechanical thrombectomy, specifically in regards to the extended time windows for treatment eligibility, now offer hope to patients who were previously destined to severe morbidity and mortality. The authors of this chapter review indications for acute stroke therapy, methods for streamlining immediate care, key diagnostic imaging findings, results of the major thrombectomy trials, and complications for the post-interventional patient.

In the optimistic opening of Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s Casa Guidi Windows (1851), street song appears as a sign of political regeneration. Hearing a little child singing ‘O bella libertà’ in a street in Florence in 1847, Barrett Browning projects a future for Italy in which the poetry of loss and lament will be replaced by a modern song of enlightenment and freedom. These hopes, raised by the revolutions of 1848, were crushed in the defeats that followed, and the second part of Casa Guidi Windows reflects with mordant irony on these events. The figure of the child in the street is replaced by that of her own child, born in 1849; yet Barrett Browning returns, in a number of later poems, to the child singing of liberty, especially in poems written in the last year of her life, when the prospects for a united Italy were again resurgent.

Erosion resistant infrared coatings are critical aspects of next generation avionic sensor windows. Current testing techniques employing water jets and particulate impacts and qualitative measurements which are very difficult to relate to the physical parameters of the optical coating. For future improvements in this area, investigations have been undertaken to relate these destructive tests to properties of hardness, elasticity and adhesion as measured using nanoindention techniques. The goal of this effort is to develop strong enough correlations between quantitative physical characteristics and the qualitative erosion testing to allow more rational approaches to coating improvements with respect to its rain and particle erosion resistance characteristics. It is hoped that these tests may result in less destructive acceptance test for the avionic windows. It should be noted that the information gained during this effort is unique and the first of its kind as applied to infrared erosion resistant coatings. This paper presents preliminary results of this on-going effort.

Utilization of thermocline storage facilities have been studied in the past and this paper hopes to expand upon that knowledge. The heat transfer between the heat transfer fluid and filler materials are governed by two conservation of energy equations, often referred as Schumann [1] equations. We solve these two coupled partial differential equations using Laplace transformation. The initial temperature distribution can be constant, linear or exponential. This flexibility allows us to apply the model to simulate unlimited charging and discharging cycles, similar to a day-to-day operation. The analytical model is used to investigate charging and discharging processes, and energy storage capacity. In an earlier paper [2], the authors presented numerical solution of the Schumann equations using method of characteristics. Comparison between analytical and numerical results shows that they are in very good agreement.

The activation function for neurons is a prominent element in the deep learning architecture for obtaining high performance. Inspired by neuroscience findings, we introduce and define two types of neurons with different activation functions for artificial neural networks: excitatory and inhibitory neurons, which can be adaptively selected by self-learning. Based on the definition of neurons, in the paper we not only unify the mainstream activation functions, but also discuss the complementariness among these types of neurons. In addition, through the cooperation of excitatory and inhibitory neurons, we present a compositional activation function that leads to new state-of-the-art performance comparing to rectifier linear units. Finally, we hope that our framework not only gives a basic unified framework of the existing activation neurons to provide guidance for future design, but also contributes neurobiological explanations which can be treated as a window to bridge the gap between biology and computer science.

Abstract To investigate the heat transfer characteristics of the chrome-plated tube and hope it could be used on the internal heat exchanger of passive containment cooling system (PCS), an experimental investigation has been conducted. In this experiment, a series of steam condensation experiments are performed under pure steam and steam-air mixed conditions over chrome-plated tube for a variety of chromium coating thickness (1μm and 10μm), total pressure, air mass fraction and wall subcooling. Condensation heat transfer coefficient was obtained for the total pressure ranging from 0.2 MPa to 0.4 MPa, air mass fraction ranging from 0.10 to 0.71, and wall subcooling from 10°C to 70°C. Moreover, the designed visualization experimental device makes the experimental phenomenon can be directly observed through the observation window. Under the pure steam condition, the results show that droplet condensation and filmwise condensation is co-existed on both two kinds of chrome-plated tubes, the chrome coating thickness of 10μm tube shows better heat transfer ability. Under the steam-air mixed condition, the condensation heat transfer coefficient of both two kinds of tubes increases with total pressure, and decrease with the air mass fraction and wall subcooling, while the influence of chrome coating thickness on heat transfer is no longer noticeable. The results also indicate that the thickness of the chromium coating will affect the surface microstructure of the chrome-plated tube and then affect the heat transfer ability of the chrome-plated tube.

Streszczenie:
Abstract Drilling process automation has been a trending topic within the technical community, most recently discussed in SPE-212565-MS (Cayeux et al. 2023). Recovery control - specifically in the case of motor stalls - is not only integral to consistently completing automation control system execution, but also building confidence for the control system users and ultimate automation benefactors. Predicting, preventing, detecting, mitigating, and recovering motor stalls through automated recovery control solves an issue affecting most operators, contributing to additional bottom-hole assembly (BHA) damage and unplanned trips. The recovery control system was designed with six major process control interfaces, two of which occur during on-bottom drilling: drilling while rotating and drilling while sliding. Each control interface is a means by which an external system can control the rig tools in a coordinated fashion, managing what control is currently active and ensuring the driller can ultimately assume control at any given time. The recovery control is customized and preconfigured with an observation window to execute the recovery process once the stall criteria has been breached while on-bottom drilling, sliding or rotating. The result is mitigated motor stalls that are consistently managed with a configurable automation system, less BHA damage, and no motor stall related unplanned trips - displaying both time and cost value. After two years of testing the recovery control system internally, there were no undetected stalls, no false detections, and no unplanned trips due to motor stall, displaying detailed accuracy. The recovery control complements the process control, limit control, and manual control components of the automation control system to drill a stand effectively and consistently. A complete and effective automation control system gives time back to the rig crew and allows for leadership development opportunities. The reliability gained through recovery control, faster than manual attempts, allows the driller to focus more time on safety and training the rig crew instead of monitoring differential pressure in the hopes of manually preventing a motor stall. In nearly all cases, stalls were detected faster with the automatic recovery control system compared to manual detection by the driller. Drillers cannot be expected to pay attention to the hundreds of potential drilling problems - a control system can. There are systems claiming to identify motor stalls, but this recovery control is the only technology to date that actively detects and recovers the system from the stall.

One of the main challenges faced in developing countries is that many children and youths are not in any form of education, employment or training. Unlike the developed world, these countries have young populations and are characterized by relatively high population growth rates. It is practically not feasible to accommodate the increasing number of children and youth in existing educational institutions, using the traditional methods of classroom education. There is the risk of keeping more children and youth out of education and by so doing, exposing them to all forms of social problems like alcohol and drug abuse. Unfortunately, even those learners that find themselves in school sometimes hardly realise significant educational achievements. This is mainly because many schools have crumbling infrastructure, overcrowded classrooms and poor educational outcomes. // The problem of poor educational outcomes in developing countries is exacerbated by occasional natural disasters like tsunamis, volcanic eruptions and pandemic outbreaks. As was witnessed with the Covid-19 pandemic, these disasters not only constrain the smooth-running of education systems, they also make educational provision more expensive. This further pushes more children out of school. It is clear from experience that education institutions need to build systems that provide more access at affordable cost and that are more resilient to the myriad of challenges that are posed by nature. The advent of technology provides a window of hope in this regard. Use of educational technology allows more people to participate in education, provides greater flexibility, and has immense potential to enhance the quality of education. This paper is a reflection of the contribution COL is making in supporting digitisation of the curriculum at the schooling level as a way of addressing the challenges of access, quality and resilience. The paper highlights the initiatives that were implemented, the methodology that has been used to collect data from various countries where COL supported technology enhanced learning, achievements that were made and challenges that were encountered. It also highlights emerging results of these interventions and surfaces their potential impact.

In 2011 the DeepCwind Consortium, led by the University of Maine (UMaine), performed an extensive series of floating wind turbine model tests at the Maritime Research Institute Netherlands (MARIN) offshore basin. These tests, which were conducted at 1/50th scale, investigated the response of three floating wind turbine concepts subjected to simultaneous wind and wave environments. The wind turbine blades utilized for the tests were geometrically-similar models of those found on the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) 5 MW reference wind turbine and performed poorly in the Froude-scaled, low-Reynolds number wind environment. As such, the primary aerodynamic load produced by the wind turbine, thrust, was drastically lower than expected for a given Froude-scaled wind speed. In order to obtain appropriate mean thrust forces for conducting the global performance testing of the floating wind turbines, the winds speeds were substantially raised beyond the target Froude-scale values. While this correction yielded the desired mean thrust load, the sensitivities of the thrust force due to changes in the turbine inflow wind speed, whether due to wind gusts or platform motion, were not necessarily representative of the full-scale system. In hopes of rectifying the wind turbine performance issue for Froude-scale wind/wave basin testing, efforts have been made by UMaine, Maine Maritime Academy and MARIN to design performance-matched wind turbines that produce the correct thrust forces when subjected to Froude-scale wind environments. In this paper, an improved, performance-matched wind turbine is mounted to the DeepCwind semi-submersible platform investigated in 2011 (also studied in the International Energy Association’s OC4 Phase II Project) and retested in MARIN’s offshore basin with two major objectives: 1) To demonstrate that the corrective wind speed adjustments made in the earlier DeepCwind tests produced realistic global performance behaviors and 2) To illustrate the increased capability for simulating full-scale floating wind turbine responses that a performance-matched turbine has over the earlier, geometrically-similar design tested. As an example of this last point, this paper presents select results for coupled wind/wave tests with active blade pitch control made possible with the use of a performance-matched wind turbine. The results of this paper show that the earlier DeepCwind tests produced meaningful data; however, this paper also illustrates the immense potential of using a performance-matched wind turbine in wind/wave basin model tests for floating wind turbines.

The use of Constellations for weather science, security and disaster monitoring is a major challenge for space application services. Satellite to satellite communication using existing constellations has not been extensively explored yet. It can improve the communication times for small-satellite missions which have limited access to ground stations. Thus, a mission to demonstrate the feasibility of this link is required. Another element of interest in space application is Earth Observation, especially in the context of Climate Change. Gravimetry allows an understanding of mass transport in the Earth System through the remote sensing of the time variation of the Earth gravity field. CubeSats are low-cost small-scale and hence lower risk solutions to Earth Observation missions. University CubeSats have shown their success in demonstration and scientific missions, and have a great potential in providing students with practice and application on real space systems. In this context, the student associations ASTRE and SUPAERO CubeSat Club have joined in a CubeSat program called TOLOSAT, with the hope of demonstrating such technologies. Gathering 70 students from Toulouse, the team was split into subsystems in accordance with the concurrent engineering principles. The work performed followed recommendations from experts from the French National Centre for Space Studies (CNES) and the industry. The TOLOSAT payloads have to test and demonstrate new means of measuring gravity and addressing communication issues. Firstly, for the gravimetry mission, our approach relies solely on GNSS to compute the gravity field, avoiding expensive gravimeters. For the communication mission: the Iridium constellation will be used as an intermediate between the CubeSat and the ground station. Off-the-shelf components such as patch antennas are planned to prove their efficiency in orbit. This would improve the coverage and the communication window. The preliminary design was completed. TOLOSAT was designed as a 3-unit nanosatellite, on a 97.4° inclined, 500km high orbit. Margins were also ensured to allow a third payload to be defined in the future, that will be used for finance and partnerships. Detailed designs are still required, but the educational purposes have been fulfilled, in terms of discovery of the development of space missions as well as in the teamwork culture. The team is now moving on to a new phase, dedicated to a more detailed conception with an on-going focus on the introduction to students to technical - but not only - fields of knowledge applied to space systems

Streszczenie:
Shifts in disturbance patterns across the Northeast are of increasing concern as the climate continues to change. In particular, changes in patterns of frequency, severity and extent of disturbance event may have detrimental cascading impacts on forest ecosystems and human communities. To explore how changing disturbance regimes might impact future forest health and management it is necessary to understand the historical trends and impacts of disturbance in the region. Although individual types of disturbance have already been analyzed, there is a need for a consolidated overview of the current state of disturbance in northeastern forests. To address this need, the Forest Ecosystem Monitoring Cooperative (FEMC) developed the FEMC: Tracking Shifts in Disturbance Regimes web portal for users to explore changes over time of key disturbance drivers, identify important disturbance responses, and discover where monitoring is happening for both drivers and responses. In collaboration with our advisory committee, we identified key disturbance drivers—flood, high winds, fire, drought, pests—and responses—macroinvertebrates, cold-water fisheries, invasive plants—that are of particular concern in the region. For each of the drivers we identified a suitable regional dataset and analyzed changes over time in frequency, severity, and extent. We also created a structured framework to catalogue programs across the region that are monitoring for these disturbance drivers and responses. Version 1.0 of the FEMC: Tracking Shifts in Disturbance Regimes (https://uvm.edu/femc/disturbance) web portal, first released in October 2021, contains 272 data programs, 11 drivers and three responses. Through the web portal users can browse programs by state, driver type or response type, and explore where monitoring is happening across the region. Driver-specific analyses allow users to quickly see the trends in severity, frequency and extent of selected disturbances and compare the impacts in selected states to regional data. We hope that this collection of programs and the analysis of trends provide researchers and land managers with an easy way to understand the current state of disturbance in northeastern forests that enables them to analyze and plan for future impacts.
