Streszczenie:
In heterogeneous wireless network, vertical handoff plays an important role for guaranteeing quality of service and overall performance of network. Conventional vertical handoff trigger schemes are mostly developed from horizontal handoff in homogeneous cellular network. Basically, they can be summarized as hysteresis-based and dwelling-timer-based algorithms, which are reliable on avoiding unnecessary handoff caused by the terminals dwelling at the edge of WLAN coverage. However, the coverage of WLAN is much smaller compared with cellular network, while the motion types of terminals can be various in a typical outdoor scenario. As a result, traditional algorithms are less effective in avoiding unnecessary handoff triggered by vehicle-borne terminals with various speeds. Besides that, hysteresis and dwelling-timer thresholds usually need to be modified to satisfy different channel environments. For solving this problem, a vertical handoff algorithm based on Q-learning is proposed in this paper. Q-learning can provide the decider with self-adaptive ability for handling the terminals’ handoff requests with different motion types and channel conditions. Meanwhile, Neural Fuzzy Inference System (NFIS) is embedded to retain a continuous perception of the state space. Simulation results verify that the proposed algorithm can achieve lower unnecessary handoff probability compared with the other two conventional algorithms.

In today’s high-speed communication era, when a user moves from one network to another, voice call and video streaming should not be interrupted. Different wireless network technologies such as WLAN, a cellular network, WiMAX coexist and they have different data rate and different area of coverage. Therefore, it is very challengeable to design an efficient vertical handoff scheme which will satisfy the seamless connectivity and provide Quality of Service(QoS). The aim of this paper is the different classification of handoff and survey the existing vertical Handoff decision making algorithms.

Streszczenie:
Quality of service (QoS) is so significant that it cannot be neglected in the recent evolution of wireless mobile networks, which are characterized by great heterogeneity. Handoff delay is one of the problematic issues that users are facing in the heterogeneous networks. In the wireless networks, many mobile users still cannot obtain the network resources they need when applying real-time services while handoff occurs. Consequently, providing a seamless handoff for QoS connections in heterogeneous wireless local area network (WLAN) and worldwide interoperability for microwave access (WiMAX) is crucial. In this paper, a resource ReSerVation Protocol (RSVP) extension scheme for seamless handoff in heterogeneous WLAN/WiMAX networks is proposed. The proposed scheme is based on QoS aware mobility architecture to guarantee a certain degree of QoS. The network selection is initiated by the mobility of the mobile station (MS) and pre-handoff is performed, basing on received signal strength (RSS). Simulation results show that the proposed scheme outperforms the previous schemes.

Streszczenie:
Internet protocol (IP)-based mobile systems are ushering new and faster technologies in wireless mobile networking. Therefore, the expectations from these network services with respect to data transfer rate and quality of service (QoS) are high. As such, meeting these requirements is the recent trend in modern wireless technologies. An important aspect regarding such improvements is the modification of handoff schemes between different networks. In this paper, we are focusing on the recent trends based on seamless handoff scheme in heterogeneous networks such as worldwide interoperability for microwave access (WiMAX) and long term evolution (LTE). The development of the session initiation protocol (SIP) Prior-INVITE scheme is an improvement on the earlier used SIP Re-INVITE method, which comes a long way in decreasing the average handoff delay. The performance analysis using software simulation on account of various parameters, such as handoff delay, cost of signaling and packet loss rate are accomplished in this work. The performance analysis demonstrates that the proposed scheme outperforms the ordinary cross-layer scheme and noncross-layer scheme in a vertical handover scenario.

Streszczenie:
The next generation of wireless system is expected to provide multimedia, multi class services any time anywhere with seamless mobility and Quality of Service (QoS). In such environment, vertical handoff management plays an important and challenging role. Some of the main functions of vertical handoff management are: to implement appropriate vertical handoff decision to minimize number of unnecessary handoff, to maintain minimum vertical handoff latency for seamless mobility and to provide guaranteed acceptable QoS required for user satisfaction. Thus, in this paper to avoid unnecessary handoff in integrated heterogeneous network we have proposed that the vertical handoff decision depends on coverage area of the network and the speed of the Mobile Node. Application specific cut-off speed for particular coverage range of network during which handoff is beneficial has been determined. Real time applications like HDTV, MPEG-4, and H.261 are considered in integrated heterogeneous network of UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunication System) and WLAN. Vertical handoff latency is analyzed for varied network traffic load, types of application and varied speed of Mobile Node. Effect of Mobile Node speed on packet loss is also analyzed. Finally, to satisfy user with acceptable end to end QoS, especially in the presence of heterogeneous integrated networks where every network has individual QoS, an end to end QoS mapping scheme between UMTS and WLAN integrated network has been proposed. The simulation is performed using Network Simulator NS-2 with NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) add on module.

Abrupt node movements is mobile networks directly affects the network connectivity of the node. Abruptly moving nodes generally face the issue of low network quality, and call drops. An effective handoff mechanism is needed in order to address this issue. In this research, we are proposing a network score based handoff mechanism, which follows the make-before-break principle. An improvement in terms of handoff delay, and packet loss is reported by the extensive analysis and simulations performed on the proposed system. Average handoff delay of less than 1ms, and packet loss ratio of less than 1% are obtained by our research. We plan to extend the research further for multiple networks to extend the performance analysis.

Streszczenie:
The primary purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of racial and gender diversity on group process and problem solving in an academic setting. The importance of this dynamic is its value in preparing students for the workplace. The supposition is if a group is homogeneous, commitment and performance is improved. Data for the study was collected from upper-level undergraduate male and female students, registered in two sixteen week business courses taught by one instructor, at a large university in a metropolitan city in the northeastern United States. There were five racially mixed groups of seven members in each of the four sections of the two courses. During this period, group members met frequently for class projects, including a series of case analyses. Only balanced heterogeneous groups significantly enhanced their groups’ performance on complicated problem-solving tasks over time. They exceeded the performance of all homogeneous groups, except that of the black American female homogeneous groups. Ultimately, the academic grades of the balanced heterogeneous groups as well as their individual members were in the upper half of all grades issued.

Streszczenie:
To achieve the goal that anybody could communicate with anyone at anytime in anyplace and in anyway, many technologies, such as GSM、CDMA、WCDMA、CDMA2000、TD-SCDMA、802.11a/b/g and so on, come true in the past years. And now, many B3G or 4G technologies are being studied. It is well-known that the future network would be heterogeneous networks. It is studied in this paper the mobility management of wireless heterogeneous network and a reversing paging process of callee is proposed which integrates paging and handoff. In the process when the caller pages the callee choosing its best suited network on one end, the callee chooses its own best network to begin a reversing paging process to set up the communication. The simulation tells that the proposed process has better performances in the call delay, the call succeeding rate and the wireless signal cost than that of the existing process in which it sets up the call first and then does vertical handoff independently.

Streszczenie:
In this paper, a genetic algorithm (GA)-based approach is used to evaluate the probability of successful handoff in heterogeneous wireless networks (HWNs) so as to increase capacity and network performance. The traditional handoff schemes are prone to ping pong and corner effects and developing an optimized handoff scheme for seamless, faster, and less power consuming handoff decision is challenging. The GA scheme can effectively optimize soft handoff decision by selecting the best fit network for the mobile terminal (MT) considering quality of service (QoS) requirements, network parameters and user’s preference in terms of cost of different attachment points for the MT. The robustness and ability to determine global optima for any function using crossover and mutation operations makes GA a promising solution. The developed optimization framework was simulated in Matrix Laboratory (MATLAB) software using MATLAB’s optima tool and results show that an optimal MT attachment point is the one with the highest handoff success probability value which determines direction for successful handoff in HWN environment. The system maintained a 90% with 4 channels and more while a 75% was obtained even at high traffic intensity.

Streszczenie:
With the development of 4G mobile telecommunication systems, providing users with the convenience of a seamless continuous connection is not enough anymore. Users want to be connected through the best available network with the best quality of service. It is necessary to have a good decision-making algorithm which decides whether it is necessary to perform handoff to another network, the best network to vertically perform handoff to, and the right time to initiate the handover. This paper proposes a new approach in which mobile terminals (MTs) continuously analyze the network and keep a database of the best available networks. The concept is based on QoS aware ant colony built on the vertical handoff mechanism that uses an updated version of ants’ colony optimization decision algorithm (ACOR), the dynamic and static factors such as RSS, the cost of service, bandwidth, the velocity of MT, the power consumption and security, and the module for predicting the traveling distance within an IEEE 802.11 WLAN cell. Simulation results show that we can not only meet the individual needs of users in terms of QoS, but also improve the whole system performance by reducing the number of handover failures and unnecessary handover instances by up to 95%.
