Streszczenie:
This paper is based on the Keynote Address given by the author at the First National Home Visiting Conference in Canberra, 18-20 August, 1997. The paper explores a range of questions fundamental in relation to the future of home visiting programs in Australia What are home visiting programs? Who visits whom and to what end? What type of relationship develops and what happens during the visit? Where should such programs fit into agencies and service systems? And what about issues such as funding, ethics and evaluation? Last but not least, how can we learn from the home visiting programs of the past to meet the needs of the present and the future?

Streszczenie:
Routine home visiting is a luxury not afforded to other medical specialities. The practice of routine home assessment visiting in geriatric medicine was evaluated in a prospective study of 110 consecutive referrals to determine whether; the response to general practitioners referrals could be predicted from the information given at the time of referral and; to identify where home visiting identified additional information of value in directing services more appropriately. Requests for admission were accurately predicted in 86–96% of cases by the visiting and a control doctor respectively. Additional information of value in directing services and patient management was gained from the home visit in 30% of admissions, 58% of day hospital cases and 80% of out-patients. It is possible to predict the outcome of home visits although implementation of such predictions without direct communication with general practitioners would result in a small number of unnecessary admissions and referrals to day hospital services.

Streszczenie:
Maternal and child health home visiting services play a critical role in healthcare within the United States. Programs are widely varied and services offered depend on local and regional adopted designs. Observational and experimental research provides mixed conclusive results. Some literature reports statistically significant positive outcomes for home visitation services while other research fails to duplicate or provide secondary matched findings. Future research design opportunities include national, inclusive, cross collaborative home visiting research that seeks to minimize limitations. Future home visiting programs should utilize research opportunities in public and private program redesign, continuous quality improvement as well as in accreditation for optimal effect on target populations. Only with strong, supportive research can maternal and child home visiting services be tailored, replicated and consistent across the United States.

Streszczenie:
Maternal and child health home visiting programmes demonstrate positive outcomes, yet retention of families in services can be difficult. This study examined caregiver satisfaction with home visiting programmes in South Carolina, USA, including an assessment of facilitators and barriers of satisfaction and overall engagement in services. A non-random, purposive sampling strategy was used to recruit caregivers enrolled in home visiting in South Carolina for study participation. Caregivers rated their satisfaction with home visiting highly and valued their programmes' educational components. Barriers to satisfaction and engagement included logistical factors such as difficulty scheduling appointments. Home visiting programmes should ensure their workforce development and accessibility practices are aligned to meet families' needs to promote retention in services.

Streszczenie:
Purpose: Home visiting (HV) work represents an expanding, extremely promising, and commonly practiced approach that can be seen in various areas of social work as well as health care. This report presents the results of the research study “‘home treatment’ (HT)—transdisciplinary research in HV work.” Method: It is the first German study that has used qualitative and quantitative methods to collect data from different professions in respect to this topic. From the point of view of the professionals, the study underlines that HV work principally seems to be a good base for establishing a professional and confidential relationship. They attribute more sustainability and participation from the clients to home-based interventions than other forms of help. After a short introduction about the current situation of HV work, the research project will be explained and the qualitative and quantitative methods described. Results: The results of the “HT Questionnaire” will be presented in 10 sections and the qualitative results in a model for reflection based on three points of view and five main topics. Discussion: Finally, some ethical and safety aspects will be discussed.
