Streszczenie:
This paper is a theoretical and aesthetic exploration of my MFA thesis film- an autobiographical documentary. This documentary was entirely shot in China, with both high-definition footage and Super 8 film; it takes a journey in my hometown to discuss the contemporary housing problem across generations in modern China. By focusing on ordinary family life, the film attempts to reveal the tension and conflicts arising between Chinese people's need for roots and the shifting socioeconomic system. The first part of the paper addresses the highly contrasted filmic textures that establish various temporal dimensions in the film. Taking an autobiographical approach, the first person perspective is employed to connect these times and spaces. The second part of the paper will examine the subjectivity in the film and discuss how the self functions as a storyteller, an outsider and a family member at the same time. The following chapter will visit the physical familiar space. The lens searches for marks and signs left by everyday practices, in order to trace the change of the concept of home in Chinese culture after the invasion of industrialization and consumerism. Such an enormous socioeconomic transformation has eventually given birth to a wave of nostalgia in contemporary China. This nostalgia answers a cultural need that counters the irresistible process of modernization, urbanization and commercialization in the transitional China.

Streszczenie:
The challenge of wirelessly streaming high quality video around the home is of considerable commercial interest. Consumers have access to ever-increasing quantities of audio-visual content and a growing choice of options for consuming that content, from large screen televisions to tablet-format mobile devices. Advances in consumer wireless technology (802.11n WiFi) and video compression (H.264/ AVe) make it possible to deliver High Definition (HD) video of good quality around the home over consumer-grade networks. However, multiple clients consuming content over the same network - a scenario becoming ever more typical in home environments - make the above streaming task more challenging. The trend of increasing spatial, temporal and dynamic range resolutions will most likely keep this problem relevant in the near future. In this thesis we propose methods for improving the quality of wirelessly streamed video in a 'home-theatre' scenario. This application assumes HD video resolutions and a viewer who is watching for entertainment purposes on a large display and expects little visible distortion to the content. We target a consumer electronics application where cost - and thus complexity - are important design features. Specifically, we examine two techniques which can be employed in this scenario: rate-adaptive streaming through Hy-pothetical Reference Decoder (HRD) parameter selection and spatiotemporal resolution scaling. The first of these techniques is motivated by the fact that designers of consumer electronics products which incorporate off-the-shelf components often have limited access to the internal parameters of those components. Adaptive streaming techniques which call for fine-grained control over compressed bit stream generation, for example, may not be usable. Instead, we propose a technique for meeting varying channel bandwidth constraints by adaptively specifying HRD parameters to an encoder. We implement the technique in a simulation which operates on a windowed basis, monitoring buffer conditions and specifying parameters for use in the upcoming window, and show that it is able to offer reduced video distortion by adapting to changes in the radio environment. The second technique involves the scaling of spatial and/or temporal resolution prior to compression at a target bit rate. With certain types of content and for certain bit rates, this results in improved perceptual video quality. We create a test set of content impaired id this way, then conduct a large subjective quality assessment of that content. We then use these results to evaluate the performance of a number of common objective video quality metrics. Finally, we present a classification-based method for selecting the appropriate level of spatiotemporal resolution scaling based on low-complexity features of the video.

Streszczenie:
The growth of broadband Internet access across the world for the last 10 years has made new business models possible. Services which before mainly were provided by network operators and in dedicated networks have now migrated to the open Internet. This has created a global service provider market, using the Internet as platform. The network operators are in many cases left with only providing the broadband access service. For the global service providers, continuous effort is put into the field of finding smart methods for bringing new and advanced services to the market without asking for e.g. QoS features from the involved network operators. This type of service delivery is called Over-The-Top (OTT). The concept of making services able to adapt their network and transport requirements during time of delivery is a strong contribution to success for OTT services. The focus of the work in this thesis, is methods for improving various aspects - as defined by my research questions - related to QoS and potentially also QoE for dynamic adaptive video streaming over HTTP (DASH) services. The motivation for focusing on video services is based on their high QoS requirements (i.e. bandwidth) and also popularity in terms of usage. In the work presented in this thesis, I have studied the behaviour and performance of DASH services by means of simulations, measurements and experiments. Based on insight obtained through this, I established a hypothesis on how QoS and QoE aspects could be improved for users present in the same home network environment. My hypothesis was that making more accurate information available about both services and network conditions in near real-time could facilitate improved control methods. The effectiveness of my suggested methods have in most cases been analysed by means of implementation in an experimental lab scenario, and supported by simulations and analytical approaches when appropriate. The findings presented in the included papers are all closely related and map into the research model used. This model is composed of Knowledge Plane, Monitor Plane and Action plane components located in both service endpoints and involved network components. As my main focus has been on OTT service delivery, the main contributions of my work apply to service endpoints, i.e. components in the home network and on the server side. The server side would in many cases be represented by a Content Delivery Network (CDN) node. The main research questions identified are: RQ1: In a home network how to (autonomously) control the performance of DASH based services. RQ2: How to provide fairness and stability for competing DASH sessions using service endpoint functionality. RQ3: How to choose appropriate quality levels for a DASH session. The main contributions from my research are: C1: A method for controlling the quality levels of DASH in the home gateway. C2: A method for improving fairness among competing DASH sessions. C3: A method for shaping traffic aggregates on access links with DASH components. C4: A method for estimating available bandwidth on access links when DASH sessions are present.

Streszczenie:
This thesis examines home entertainment network remote configuration solutions. It does so by inspecting four home entertainment networking solution specifications - HAVi, Jini, AV/C and UPnP. Two of these (AV/C and UPnP) are implemented partially for a system allowing a TV to configure an AudioNideo Receiver (AV/R) remotely on the network (a process known as remote configuration). The two implementations are then more closely investigated and several implementation differences in the approach between the remote configuration method of device configuration and other methods of device configuration are discerned. These different approaches are then categorised into one of two theoretical models of communication for configuring devices on home entertainment networks - the Rendering model and the Programmed model. By classifying a particular method of device configuration into one of the two models, manufacturers can quickly determine the inherent strengths and weaknesses of that method

Networks will soon connect a wide range of computing devices within the home. Amongst those devices will be home entertainment devices. Remote control over the network will be a key application for networked entertainment devices, and requires a protocol for communication understood by both controller and controlled device. Devices capable of communication using multiple control protocols will be compatible with a wider range of controllers than those which implement only one control protocol. This work examines home networks and a number of control protocols. The implementations of the UPnP and AV/C protocols for an AV receiver are described. The issues involved in the concurrent use of multiple control protocols to control a device are considered, possible methods of concurrent control discussed, and a solution which simulates virtual copies of the device is implemented and tested.

The effects of self directed video feedback was examined in the current study with therapists of home based ABA programs working with children with a pervasive developmental disorder. A multiple baseline design was used to systematically implement the intervention which consisted of the therapists watching a self recorded video of implementing a prompting procedure, completing a questionnaire and setting a goal for the next therapy session. Results of the intervention showed that the intervention was effective for one participant, while the other participant's prompting behavior only increased after further instruction and modeling of the behavior by the author. Implications for the current study as well as possibilities for future research are discussed.

Internet traffic is growing at a significant pace, especially with video content that already accounts for more than 50% of total of internet traffic. The reasons for this trend are increasing numbers in mobile devices, shifting focus from traditional television media to the online content, and advancement in internet technology. Internet infrastructure is facing challenges as it tries to meet the demand for video traffic. One solution is web caching, an area of research with many different proposed algorithms and implementations. This thesis examines the performance of a set of algorithms using a popular web caching software, Squid. The tests are done using a web automation tool, Selenium, to browse the web from a home network in three different scenarios: checking web content, videos, and a mix of web content and videos.

Streszczenie:
Direct-care staff working with individuals with developmental disabilities (DD) are frequently exposed to challenging behavior from residents and expected to respond correctly to challenging resident behavior, but often receive insufficient training due to lack of resources and high staff turnover (e.g., Collins, 2012; Collins, Higbee, & Salzberg, 2009; Haberlin, Beauchamp, Agnew, & O’Brien, 2009; Pelletier, McNamara, Braga-Kenyon, & Ahearn, 2010). Training methods such as Behavioral Skills Training (BST) are highly intrusive and require high amounts of resources (e.g., Parsens, Rollyson, & Reid, 2012). Research suggests technological based alternatives are more cost effective, decreases training time and response effort from management, and increases distance learning opportunities and dissemination capabilities. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the use of a hierarchical training model that incorporated video modeling, video modeling+assessment, and BST to train behavior management strategies for direct-care staff working with adults with developmental disabilities. Subjects were exposed to the most cost effective training approach first (i.e., video model) and sequentially moved to more intrusive methods (i.e., video model+assessment, & BST) as needed. All subjects implemented behavior management strategies with fidelity after exposure to technological based training alternatives (i.e., video model, video mdoel+assessment).

Thesis (MA (Visual Arts))--University of Stellenbosch, 2011.
Includes bibliography.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study is motivated by an interest in a host of idiosyncratically interrelated phenomena that can be understood, in my view, as symptomatic of a primary interest in representing experiences of affect, loss, alienation and objectification of an “other”, which in turn, necessitates a critical interrogation of the notion of self. These phenomena include notions of the body (animal and human), private and public spaces, voyeurism, transgression, desire, fetishization, sentimentality and most critically, nostalgia as understood through experiences of homesickness and heimwee. My focus is on the affective potential of contemporary lens-based (photographic and video) art. I approach this study by way of three central ideas: the longing for home (the relationship between self/space); the longing for the body (the relationship between body/self); and the longing for the other (the relationship between self/other). I make use of psychoanalytic and feminist theory, as well as theoretical interpretations of photography and screen-based media, in the broader context of visual art and culture, to frame my discussion. As such, this study draws on the theoretical work of Roland Barthes and Susan Sontag to introduce basic concepts such as the relationship between photography and memory, and develops these to include ideas of the gaze, self and alientation from the self read through Judith Butler and Jacques Lacan’s image of the mirror phase; home and homesickness read through Martin Heidegger, Sigmund Freud’s notion of das unheimlich (uncanny) and Julia Kristeva’s notion of abjection; and Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari’s objectification of the animal-other. This study is intimately linked with, and critically informed by my personal artistic practice, which focuses specifically on the photographic or filmic representation (projection) of separation, displacement and longing for an absent other (home, partner & domestic animal). I discuss my own work relation to selected examples by artists including Shizuka Yokomizo, Sophie Calle, Penny Siopis and Jo Ractliffe, among others, framing the art object and related processes as cathartic, mnemonic and talismanic; acknowledging the paradoxical aspect of photography as simultaneously distancing and acting as a trace of the real; and analysing the evocative (metaphorical or conceptual) allusions made possible by lens-based processes and their presentation as print and projection, image and screen.

Given the stress involved in caring for elders, the propensity for abuse among the older adult population continues to be a problem, as the number of caregivers providing care in the home is increasing to meet the demand of an increasing population of older adults. One solution is to implement video surveillance in the home. The purpose of this phenomenological, retrospective and prospective study was to describe the perceptions and experiences of caregivers that affect stress in the home care setting and to describe participants' perceptions about the impact of video surveillance in the home environment on caregiver stress and elder abuse. Using a lens of critical ecological framework and privacy theory, the research questions inquired about the specific experiences of stress and the perceptions of the use of home surveillance of caregivers in the home. A sample of 9 older adult home caregivers were recruited from the United Jewish Council of the East Side Home Attendant Service Corp. Findings revealed that increased family, community, and agency involvement and support may offset the feelings of isolation of the home care environment and ensure the caregiver is given opportunities to engage in strategies designed to help cope with the inherent stressors of the job. In addition, video camera surveillance in the home care setting may provide social support through observation of the situation in the home, supporting both social control on the behavior of the caregiver and direct evidence of quality of care for the caregiver. The findings of the study help to highlight effective intervention strategies based on the specific stressors and stress relievers identified, serving to reduce the potential for older adult abuse and neglect in the home care setting.

Streszczenie:
Direct observation of the child remains an essential part of the gold standard clinical practice in the diagnosis, assessment, and treatment planning for children with Autism and related developmental conditions. Clinical professionals acknowledge that observing behavior in the natural environment is crucial to obtain an accurate and comprehensive assessment of child behavior. However, direct observation in the natural environment is not feasible for wide-scale implementation into clinical practice. Another key challenge with respect to autism diagnosis is that there is significant time lag (about 20-60 months) between age at which parents first get concerned and the age at which the child finally gets diagnosed. Delay in diagnosis can lead to delay in invaluable early interventions which could impact a child’s future developmental outcomes. A capture and access solution can play a role to fill these gaps. This thesis presents the design, development, and evaluation of a Clinician-directed Capture and Access System that can enable parents to easily collect in-home behavior specimens that have clinical utility and clinicians to use this data to complete a diagnostic assessment for autism. Analogous to a traditional lab specimen collection and assessment procedure, this approach involves three steps: 1) the clinician’s prescription of behavior specimens to be collected; 2) in-home collection and remote sharing of prescribed behavior specimens by parents; and 3) diagnostic assessment of behavior specimens by a remote and qualified clinician. The contributions of this thesis are as follows: a) identified potential opportunities and challenges specific to the design and adoption of a technology solution that enables in-home behavior specimen collection and diagnostic assessment for autism; b) identified key features and functionalities of a smart-phone based Capture System that can enable parents to easy collect in-home behavior specimens that have clinical utility; c) identified key features and functionalities of the web-based Access System that facilitate clinicians to complete remote diagnostic assessment based on in-home behavior specimens.; d) demonstrated through an end-to-end study with parents and clinicians that parents can easily capture behavior specimens through the Capture System and clinicians can complete remote autism diagnostic assessment based on in-home behavior specimens via the Access System.

Nocturnal frontal lobe epilepsy (NFLE) seizures appear almost exclusively during sleep. The differential diagnosis between this condition and sleep-related non-epileptic paroxysmal motor phenomena, in particular parasomnias, is arduous. Moreover, accepted criteria for the diagnosis of NFLE are lacking. At present video-polysomnographic recording of the seizures during sleep is the gold standard for the diagnosis but this technique is expensive and not available everywhere. The aim of this study is to measure the diagnostic accuracy of clinical history, interictal EEG and home-made video in distinguishing NFLE from non-epileptic paroxysmal sleep disorders. 13 patients who presented paroxysmal motor phenomena during sleep were consecutively enrolled in our Department and a specific diagnostic examination battery was performed. After the completion of the examinations the results were analyzed by five experts in clinical sleep medicine and epilepsy and a diagnostic decision was made: 6 subjects were classified as NFLE, 2 as parasomnias and 5 as “uncertain” diagnosis. From experts diagnostic decision, the clinical history, interictal EEG and home-made video diagnostic accuracy were calculated. The diagnostic accuracy was overall moderate and showed only slight differences between the procedures. However, it is essential to improve the diagnostic accuracy of clinical history, interictal EEG and home-made video recording that could be helpful in cases difficult to diagnose or when VEPSG monitoring is not available. In addition, future research should define reliable clinical and VEPSG criteria for the diagnosis of nocturnal frontal lobe seizures.

Background: The techniques used in assessing sleep disorders must endeavour to accurately document behavioural and physiological sleep features that they are designed to record, be acceptable to the patients and be economically viable. Present practice for laboratory based polysomnography, which is the gold standard for assessing sleep disorders, falls short of these expectations. Home recordings might help to obtain a more natural sleep, be less costly and preferable to patients. However, the feasibility of comprehensive home sleep studies is unclear due to the complexity of recording synchronised neurophysiological, cardiorespiratory and audio-visual signals in an unsupervised and non-dedicated environment. The purpose of this study was to explore whether home video telemetry polysomnography can be performed successfully in people’s own homes among patients referred to King’s College Hospital telemetry unit to be investigated for parasomnias. Method: A mixed method with two quantitative strands and one qualitative strand was adopted to assess data quality, cost aspects and acceptability. The three strands of this convergent parallel design were used to measure related but different facets of the study. A thirty-channel recording of physiological signals was synchronised with audio-visual signal. A numerical score point quality grading system developed by the researcher to assess sufficiency and readability of the recorded data was used. One on one semi-structured interview was used for the qualitative strand. Process based costing was used to asses cost viability. Results: Twenty-one patients underwent two nights of the sleep study. The findings show that data was sufficient for sleep analysis in 97.6% of the nights recorded. The analysis shows that neurophysiological signals for sleep staging and for extended montage were readable or required minor adjustment in 95.1% of the studies. Cardiorespiratory signals were readable or required minor adjustments in 97.6% for electrocardiogram and 85.4%for respiratory signals. Video picture and contents were recognisable in 95.1%, and audio signal was present, audible and clear in 80.5%.The procedure was acceptable to patients with burden of parasomnia, home environment related benefits and financial considerations emerging as main drivers for acceptance. The average cost was £617.15 compared to the standard average tariff of£998.49 for similar procedures within our hospital setting representing a saving of 38.2%. Conclusion: The present feasibility study indicates that Home Video Telemetry Polysomnography is technically feasible, acceptable to the patients, and is economically viable.

Visual lifelog indexing by content has emerged as a high reward application. Enabled by the recent availability of miniaturized recording devices, the demand for automatic extraction of relevant information from wearable sensors generated content has grown. Among many other applications, indoor localization is one challenging problem to be addressed. Many standard solutions perform unreliably in indoors conditions or require significant intervention. In this thesis we address from the perspective of wearable video camera sensors using an image-based approach. The key contribution of this work is the development and the study of a location estimation system composed of diverse modules, which perform tasks ranging from low-level visual information extraction to final topological location estimation with the aid of automatic indexing algorithms. Within this framework, important contributions have been made by efficiently leveraging information brought by multiple visual features, unlabeled image data and the temporal continuity of the video.Early and late data fusion were considered, and shown to take advantage of the complementarities of multiple visual features describing the images. Due to the difficulty in obtaining annotated data in our context, semi-supervised approaches were investigated, to use unlabeled data as additional source of information, both for non-linear data-adaptive dimensionality reduction, and for improving classification. Herein we have developed a time-aware co-training approach that combines late data-fusion with the semi-supervised exploitation of both unlabeled data and time information. Finally, we have proposed to apply transformation invariant learning to adapt non-invariant descriptors to our localization framework. The methods have been tested on controlled publically available datasets to evaluate the gain of each contribution. This work has also been applied to the IMMED project, dealing with activity recognition and monitoring of the daily living using a wearable camera. In this context, the developed framework has been used to estimate localization on the real world IMMED project video corpus, which showed the potential of the approaches in such challenging conditions

Streszczenie:
This thesis focuses on the notion of "parental responsibility" which characterises contemporary concerns over the regulation of children's video viewing in the UK. Previous studies of horne-based regulation have tended to concentrate on television at the expense of video viewing, and most studies employ quantitative methods. This thesis expands the research agenda, challenging the findings of previous research, through the employment of qualitative methods to examine family relationships at the heart of the horne-based regulation of video viewing. The work is based upon interviews with ten families from North London. This analysis is accompanied by an examination of the demands made of parents by agencies outside of the family home who are concerned with video regulation (Parliament, the print news media, the British Board of Film Classification and the video software industry). These expectations have remained unexplored by previous authors. This inquiry is located within an account of teenagers' video viewing habits, derived from a questionnaire survey of approximately five hundred year nine pupils. Central to the theoretical project of the thesis is a distinction between the concept and conceptions of "parental responsibility". It is argued that there is a broad consensus around the concept of "parental responsibility" (the notion that parents ought to have ultimate authority over their children's video viewing habits in the home). However, there is much less agreement about what constitutes responsible action in this regard. There are a variety of conceptions of parental responsibility across the accounts examined. Thus, it is impossible to draw clear distinctions between "responsible" and "irresponsible" parents, although participants in public debates frequently make such judgements. In an attempt to move beyond this impasse, the thesis provides a reconceptualisation of the "problem" of "under-age" video viewing, one which takes into account the ways in which parents currently approach the regulation of their children's video viewing habits in the home.

Streszczenie:
Treatment integrity has recently received increased attention in behavior analytic research. As more individuals with intellectual disabilities live in integrated, community group home settings, it is increasingly important that direct support staff are well trained to implement behavioral interventions, including skill acquisition programs. However, given the typically low supervisor-staff ratios and lack of prior training for most residential staff, providing the adequate intensity of training to teach sophisticated behavior skills is challenging. These studies investigated the effects of watching a video model and completing a brief quiz on staff’s ability to implement Phases I (study 1) and II (study 2) of the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) in group homes for adults with intellectual disabilities. Moreover, the effects of this staff training on clients’ correct use of PECS was also evaluated. Each study used a nonconcurrent multiplebaseline design across participants to evaluate the effects of the intervention procedures. In study 1, all four primary staff participants increased the percentage of correctly implemented Phase I steps after viewing the video model and completing the quiz. In addition, one of the primary staff participants generalized the skills to a second client participant. Likewise, secondary staff participants also demonstrated improvement after the intervention and clients demonstrated an increase in correct picture exchanges. In study 2, all three staff participants increased the percentage of correctly implemented Phase II steps after viewing the video model and taking the quiz and these effects maintained over time.

Paper 1: Evidence suggests that Nurture Groups (NGs) are effective in helping children with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties. NGs recognise the importance of parental involvement and research reveals positive social and emotional outcomes for children when NGs collaborate with parents as respected partners. An implicit power imbalance between NG staff and parents can challenge parental collaboration. This aim of this paper is to explore processes when consistent nurturing principles are being developed between a NG, schools and home. This qualitative study was conducted in a NG in the south west of England and included 3 NG staff, 4 parents, 4 children and a school teacher. An action-research model enabled consultation meetings and VIG to be introduced as an intervention to develop consistent practices. Semi-structured interviews, consultation meetings and a research diary collected data and an interpretative approach was adopted to explore processes, experiences and perceptions shared by participants. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis was used to analyse and interpret the data and produce a set of themes. The importance of effective communication, building of relationships and sharing of practice/ collaboration were identified as significant themes when developing partnership working between settings. VIG enhanced parents’ and the teacher’s communication skills and concurred with a partnership model based on empowerment, solutions and respect. Recommendations for practice include the development of personalised, informal and formal communication systems between settings. VIG can also be used effectively within NGs to develop consistent nurturing practices between settings. In addition, consideration is given to how VIG can be applied to practice more globally and how local authorities can support this process. Abstract: Paper 2 Evidence suggests that Nurture Groups (NGs) are effective in helping children with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties. The importance of parental involvement is recognised within NGs and research reveals positive social and emotional outcomes for children when NGs collaborate with parents as respected partners. An implicit power imbalance between NG staff and parents can challenge parental collaboration. This aim of this paper is to evaluate outcomes when nurturing principles are consistent between a NG, schools and home. A mixed methodology design with interpretative and scientific approaches was employed in an area NG in the south west of England. An action-research model enabled consultation meetings and Video Interactive Guidance (VIG) to be introduced as an intervention to develop consistent practices for the experimental group. Quantitative outcomes from Boxall Profiles and Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaires (SDQs) are compared pre- and post-intervention for an experimental group (4 children and 4 parents) and a control group (4 children). Three NG staff also volunteered as participants. Qualitative measures (observation records, semi-structured interviews (SSIs), consultation meetings and VIG clips) measured outcomes for the experimental group. Data from the Boxall Profiles, SDQs, VIG clips and observations was analysed descriptively. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis was used to analyse emergent themes from the SSIs and consultation meetings. The results revealed the experimental group made greater gains post-intervention as measured by the SDQ and the control group made greater gains post-intervention as measured by the Boxall Profile. The majority of results for individual experimental group children revealed positive social and emotional outcomes post-intervention. It is difficult to draw conclusions when outcomes between the experimental and control group were compared. The majority of measures identified positive social, emotional and behavioural outcomes for experimental group children when parents and schools work collaboratively with NGs. VIG and sharing of practices helped to modify how parents and teachers understood, managed, communicated and related to children. Recommendations for practice discuss the development of personalised, informal and formal communication systems between settings while ensuring minimal anxiety for children. VIG can be used effectively within NGs to develop consistent nurturing practices between settings. Consideration is given to how VIG can be applied more broadly and how local authorities can support this process.

On the one hand, technology advances have led to the expansion of the handheld devices market. Thanks to this expansion, people are more and more connected and more and more data are exchanged over the Internet. On the other hand, this huge amound of data imposes drastic constrains in order to achieve sufficient quality. The Internet is now showing its limits to assure such quality. To answer nowadays limitations, a next generation Internet is envisioned. This new network takes into account the content nature (video, audio, ...) and the context (network state, terminal capabilities ...) to better manage its own resources. To this extend, video manipulation is one of the key concept that is highlighted in this arising context. Video content is more and more consumed and at the same time requires more and more resources. Adapting videos to the network state (reducing its bitrate to match available bandwidth) or to the terminal capabilities (screen size, supported codecs, …) appears mandatory and is foreseen to take place in real time in networking devices such as home gateways. However, video adaptation is a resource intensive task and must be implemented using hardware accelerators to meet the desired low cost and real time constraints. In this thesis, content- and context-awareness is first analyzed to be considered at the network side. Secondly, a generic low cost video adaptation system is proposed and compared to existing solutions as a trade-off between system complexity and quality. Then, hardware conception is tackled as this system is implemented in an FPGA based architecture. Finally, this system is used to evaluate the indirect effects of video adaptation; energy consumption reduction is achieved at the terminal side by reducing video characteristics thus permitting an increased user experience for End-Users

Streszczenie:
Introduction: The participation profile of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) and the effectiveness of a video-based home exercise programme (VBHEP) were investigated using various research methods. Methods: The content analysis of the Move-On-Up exercise video against NICE guidelines and published research was performed. The video was evaluated for its suitability for use in VBHEP through focus groups involving UK population of patients with COPD and respiratory clinicians. Using the data from the content analysis and the focus groups, questionnaire items were synthesised for a national survey of both patients and clinicians. A study examined the relationship between participation in outpatient PR and patient measures of depression (Brief Assessment Depression Card), social support (Duke Social Support Index), multidimensional health locus of control (MHLC) and COPD severity (Medical Research Council dyspnea score). A randomised control trial (RCT) evaluated the effect of combining VBHEP and conventional outpatient PR on walking ability and PR benefit maintenance. The intervention arm received VBHEP concurrently with outpatient PR, while the control arm received only outpatient PR. Outcome measures included: the endurance shuttle walk test (ESWT), quality of life (QoL) (St George's Respiratory Questionnaire- SGRQ), MHLC and a modified Follick's activity diary. Measures were taken before PR, at the fourth and eighth weeks of PR and at six months post-PR. Focus groups were conducted between six and 20 months post-PR to evaluate patients' experience of and adherence to the use of VBHEP. Results: Critical review of 46 RCTs aided evaluation of the video demonstrating that the video content was consistent with both NICE recommendations and published research. The six focus groups that were part of the initial evaluation of the video involved 14 patients and 14 clinicians. The national survey generated responses from 60 patients and 62 clinicians; between 79 and 100% of respondents in each domain of the questionnaire indicated that the video is suitable for use. Fifty-one patients completed the study investigating the profile of patients participating in PR. The results indicated that depression has a moderate and negative statistically significant association with the uptake of PR (p < 0.05). Fifty-seven patients participated in the RCT [mean age 66.51 years (SD 9.96), mean FEV1% predicted 54.51% (SD 10.47)]. The results indicated that the use of VBHEP with outpatient PR has no significant additive effect in improving or maintaining the benefits of walking ability following PR (p<0.05). Seven patients participated in the follow-up focus groups where findings suggested that patients were still participating in VBHEP up to 20 months after it was first prescribed, though the frequency of its use appeared to diminish after PR ended. Conclusion: The Move-On-Up exercise video is suitable for VBHEP in patients with COPD. Patients with COPD and depression are less likely to take up a referral to PR compared to those without depression. The use of VBHEP concurrently with PR has no additive effect in improving or maintaining benefits of walking ability following PR. Adverse social circumstances and disease severity reduce the duration of participation in VBHEP.

Streszczenie:
[Truncated abstract] This descriptive study identified correlates of electronic media use among pre-adolescent children (10-12 year olds). It specifically focused on the potential influence of individual factors and the social and physical environment within the family home setting. The prevalence of overweight/obesity in children is escalating. Sedentary behaviour in the form of electronic media use (comprised of television (TV) and video/DVD viewing, video and computer gaming, and computer use) is a contributing and a modifiable risk factor for overweight/obesity. To date, research focused on sedentary behaviour has been largely derived from physical (in)activity data where the absence or observed low levels of physical activity participation or TV viewing only has been used as a proxy for sedentariness. Little is known about the specificities of children's electronic media use; its impact on children's overall leisure and screen-time; and, the potential influencing factors that may operate at the home level. The family home is a context-specific setting where electronic media use is a daily practice for most children. To better understand electronic-based sedentary behaviour among children the following specific aims were addressed; 1) To describe children's leisure time, particularly time spent with electronic media. 2) To explore children and parents' perceptions about electronic-based sedentary behaviour. 3) To determine the prevalence of children's electronic-media use at home. 4) To examine the influence of individual, family social and home physical factors associated with different levels of electronic media use by children. ... The availability and accessibility of a variety of electronic equipment at home, especially in the child's bedroom (particularly among boys), was also associated with children's screen behaviour. Physical aspects of the family home (i.e., lay-out and yard size) had a mixed effect on children's electronic media use. Overall, the nature of electronic media use among children is complex and is influenced by dimensions that present at children's individual, family social and physical home level. The knowledge generated from this study about specific correlates of electronic media use has extended the understanding about its impact on children's discretionary time. Future prospective longitudinal research is warranted given that most studies investigating electronic media and sedentary behaviour are of cross-sectional design. Including other forms of sedentary behaviour such as sitting and talking with friends and family, reading and/or using telephones may provide a more comprehensive measure of sedentariness in the future. Further studies should use multivariate statistical analyses (i.e., modelling) to improve clarity of relationships between multiple variables and gauge mediating factors. This study also calls for future intervention research. Findings on gender-specific correlates of electronic media use provide superior information for the development of tailored behaviour modification strategies aimed at girls and boys respectively. Active involvement of household members in the intervention is also warranted. Utilising this study's findings may strengthen intervention outcomes towards a more directed and sustained behaviour change

Streszczenie:
As motion interactive games have become more widespread the interest in using these games in rehabilitation of children with motor disorders has increased among both clinical professionals and the families of these children. The general aim of this thesis was to evaluate the feasibility of using interactive games in rehabilitation of children to promote motivation for practice, physical activity, and motor control. A systematic review of published intervention studies was conducted to obtain an overview of existing research and the current levels of evidence for using interactive games in motor rehabilitation of children. Sixteen studies met the inclusion criteria, out of these three were randomized controlled trials while half were case series or case reports. Thirteen studies presented positive findings, which indicated a promising potential. However, more convincing research is needed. Commercially available motion interactive games have only been used in a few studies on motor control, and in none of these home based practice was provided. Moreover, no earlier studies have evaluated if these games may increase motivation for training and daily physical activity among children with disabilities. To address these issues a feasibility intervention including 15 children in the ages 6-16 years and with mild to moderate cerebral palsy was conducted. Each child was provided with a Sony PlayStation2â and the EyeToyâ games in Play3, and was recommended to practice with the provided games for at least 20 minutes/day during four weeks. The intervention was evaluated with gaming diaries, physical activity monitors (SenseWear Armband), interviews with the parents, and the clinical motor tests Movement Assessment Battery for Children-2 (mABC-2), Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency subtest 5:6, and the 1 Minute Walk Test. In addition, 3D motion analysis was used to evaluate effects on quality of goal-directed arm movements towards virtual and real objects, respectively. Motivation for practice and compliance of training were high, although declining somewhat during the course of the four weeks. The children’s physical activity increased significantly during the intervention. However, four children were excluded from this analysis due to lack of complete data from the physical activity monitors. According to mABC-2 the children’s motor performance improved, but there were both floor and ceiling effects, indicating a low sensibility of this test. The two additional motor tests showed only non-significant progress. Results from the 3D motion analysis suggest that the children improved movement precision when playing the games, movement smoothness when reaching for real objects, and used a more economic reaching strategy with less trunk involvement. In the interviews the parents expressed the view that motion interactive games promote positive experiences of physical training and add elements of social interaction to the training. They also experienced less urge to take on a coaching role. The training provided by the games was considered unspecific and there was a desire for individualized games to better address the unique rehabilitative need of each child. In conclusion, it is feasible to use motion interactive games in home rehabilitation for children with cerebral palsy to promote short term motivation for practice and general physical training. Specific effects on motor control need to be further explored and there is also a need for reliable tests that are adequate and sensitive enough to capture changes in movement control. In future development of interactive games for rehabilitation purposes, it is a challenge to preserve the motivational and social features of games while at the same time optimizing an individualized physical training.

Streszczenie:
The impact of an education program on perception, knowledge, and infection rate was evaluated in this study. The educational intervention consisted of a video on infection control and a World Health Organization (WHO) pamphlet for hand hygiene. The study was conducted in one nursing home in the Southeastern United States. The survey sample consisted of 66 certified nurse assistants (CNAs). A pre- and post-intervention design was employed using the WHO's Hand Hygiene Knowledge Questionnaire and the WHO Perception Survey. Friedman's test and central tendencies showed no statistical relationship between the educational intervention and the overall knowledge scores of the sample. There also were no statistical differences in perception of hand hygiene in the CNA sample. Infection frequency was reduced with a percent change of -42%. While results of knowledge and perception surveys were not statistically significant, multiple conclusions were derived to suggest that educational opportunities may impact hand hygiene practice in CNAs and lead to a decrease in infection.
