It seems that the issues of periodization do not feature amongst the popular topics of discussion in the science of history. However, important accounts of this subject have been published. It has been made clear in the process that periodization is bound to certain spaces. The periodization of European history is different from the one of Chinese or African history. Furthermore, periodizations are didactic necessities: every account requires a temporal structuring. The most important aspects of periodization theories will be pointed out, followed by an analysis of their application in new Swiss syllabi and teaching materials.

Streszczenie:
Eusebius’s Ecclesiastical History, a seminal late-antique historical narrative, features three periodizations of the church’s past. First, a soteriological periodization divides God’s relationship with humanity at Christ’s Incarnation, an event that Eusebius marks in Book 1 with detailed commentary on the gospels rather than narrative. Second, an ecclesiastical periodization divides pristine, heroic apostolic times from post-apostolic times. The divide between apostolic times and the post-apostolic periods is illustrated through a comparison of History 2.13–17, about Simon Magus, Peter, and Mark, and 6.12, on Serapion of Antioch. And third, an epistemological periodization distinguished earlier times from Eusebius’s lifetime, the latter marked by frequent references to “our time.” Eusebius changed numerous narrative features with his changes of period, including alternating between commentary, diachronic, and synchronic format for different time periods; changing protagonists’ fallibility, individuality, composition of texts, and citation of scripture; and providing notices of episcopal successions and quotation of sources. Moreover, Eusebius’s History changed periods not with the sharp breaks of many modern histories but with gradual transitions. He also underscored key continuities, including God’s intervention in human events and alternation between persecuting and protecting rulers—a continuity within which, contrary to scholarly assumptions, the History never inaugurates a new era with the emergence of Constantine. The case study of Eusebius’s periodization suggests an important limitation of the analytic usefulness of periodizations such as “Late Antiquity” for organizing intellectual history.

In the previous study the authors examined the key problems of periodization of the history of management in general. They were identified and analyzed problems related to the subject, criteria and benchmarks of different periodizations, as well as the problems associated with the choice of the trajectory and flexibility of approaches to periodization. The periodization of the history of HRM (human resource management) is a separate area of research and involves additional challenges. In this article, the study’s authors try to compare and critically analyze various approaches to periodization of the history of human resource management and the evolution of «personnel manager» profession. The article contains classic models and views of modern researchers in the field of evolutionary theory of human resource management.

The article analyzes the creative work of the historian of Ukrainian emigration I. Lysyak-Rudnytsky on the periodization of the history of Ukrainian statehood in the context of the most common approaches to the periodization of the history of statehood. The introduction of the article contains remarks on the existing problem of periodization of the history of statehood of any country, due to the presence of various factors that serve as criteria for the creation of periodization. Therefore, none of the proposed periodizations can fully satisfy the entire scientific community. The main part of the article contains an analysis of the main approaches to the periodization of the history of Ukrainian statehood, in particular: the formational approach, mainly used by scientists in Soviet Ukraine and the civilizational approach, which was first presented to Ukraine in the early XX century in the scientific works of M. Hrushevsky. In the course of this analysis, the definitions of such concepts as «formational approach» and «civilizational approach» in relation to the periodization of the history of statehood were analyzed. In addition, this analysis was accompanied by a study of the main works of scholars who studied the history of Ukrainian statehood in a particular approach. The whole analysis was performed with the use of remarks expressed in the work by I. Lysyak-Rudnytsky on these basic approaches, as well as opportunities for their elimination at the present stage of development of historical and legal science. At the end of the article, a conclusion is made about the relevance of the concept of periodization of the history of Ukrainian statehood proposed by scientist, as well as its significance in the light of recent events in the development of Ukrainian statehood.

For historians, questions about what to call particular eras and how to conceptualize the temporal dynamics of change become particularly acute as we take on revisionist projects, such as writing and teaching feminist history, examining chronologically “deep” history, or placing history in a material as well as a social environment and in a global perspective. Temporal frameworks influence historical research even when it is located within a very limited time frame; temporalities and periodizations operate more explicitly in the teaching of survey courses. The particular periodization problems we focus on here emerged from teaching premodern world history with a focus on family and household dynamics. In trying to connect research on the domestic group as a site of world history with a historical narrative that begins with the emergence of human society and draws on evidence from around the globe, we were struck again and again by the problematic perspectives embedded in conventional periodizations. New directions in archaeological scholarship offer global historians insights and approaches with which to inform their temporal frameworks.

Abstract This piece argues that a greater understanding of the role of regions in Russian history could lead to different ways of writing Russian history that need not center the state. By including a wider range of intellectual and political actors from the regions, as well as tracing the long connections between them and Ukrainian thinkers, such a history would make regions subjects rather than simply objects. The original post and the significant number of responses provide an important snapshot of the thinking of the field of Russian history about questions related to the territorial integrity of Russia and Ukraine. The responses also deal with related topics concerning the role of indigenous peoples and the processes of colonization in the narrative of Russian history.

A large number of recent scholarship in (American) literary and cultural studies is devoted to describing the contemporary moment as a monumental break from the previous (or current) period, postmodernism, by hailing our contemporary times as the era of post-postmodernism, late postmodernism, metamodernism, cosmodernism, or of a similarly termed construction. In these different proclamations, we recognize a pervasive tendency to periodize, an attempt to separate phases of human existence and cultural creation into neat stages that ‘logically’ follow after one another to form a supposedly coherent narrative. This practice of periodizing comes with a number of pitfalls that many of these studies seem not fully aware of, and it in turn speaks to (and characterizes) the contemporary moment as one marked by a desire for the boundedness of such clear divisions. In the following pages, we chronicle the quandaries that follow from such implicit and explicit efforts of periodization by focalizing them through three different ‘creation myths’ of the contemporary that such efforts at periodization typically subscribe to. As a way of sidestepping these, we accentuate the strengths of more ‘local’ critical lenses, approaches that historicize without periodizing. As one such lens, we suggest to engage the contemporary moment through the ‘poetics of politics,’ a historical discursive formation in which literary and popular texts’ desire for political relevance is matched by a recognition, in politics, of the (meta)textual quality of political action.

Ragazzini, Beatrice. "A history of an attempt at classification. The work of Edmund Sharpe and the periodization of English medieval architecture through the lens of terminology theory". Master's thesis, Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna, 2020. http://amslaurea.unibo.it/20372/.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
This thesis aims at demonstrating the existence of terminology as common practice even before its official codification as a discipline. Specifically, this work is centred on the discovery of a terminological activity in the history of architecture and in the periodization of English ecclesiastical architecture of the Middle Ages. There, the aim is to evidence how the reflections of architecture historians on classification and naming of periods and building specimens prefigure future theories of terminology. Focusing on the architecture historian Edmund Sharpe (1809 – 1877), his attempt at classification of English medieval architecture in 1851 is described, according to the visual features of its windows. Beyond Sharpe’s work, the debate is reconstructed on the update of the official periodization. Indeed, this thesis intends to describe Sharpe and his colleagues as terminologists ante litteram and to highlight the contribution of classification and naming to the progress of knowledge. Chapter 1 introduces the historical context of the events, as well as the main principles of terminology, while in Chapter 2 the establishment of the official classification of English architecture in 1817 is reported. In Chapter 3, the historians note windows, which cannot be described through the official nomenclature. Consequently, Chapter 4 presents Sharpe’s innovative method for a classification of medieval buildings, based on the analysis of their windows. In Chapter 5, Sharpe’s periodization is examined in his volume, The Seven Periods of English Architecture. The discussion culminates, in Chapter 6, in a debate in the journal The Builder. There, the experts discuss Sharpe’s periodization, questioning both terms and classification criteria. Chapter 7 comments on the events. The destiny of Sharpe’s periodization is outlined, towards the acknowledgement that a continuous terminological update is necessary in every discipline, to keep up with the evolution of knowledge.

Contemporary production technology is about to exert an influence on the development of architecture as fundamentally as experienced during Industrialization in the 19th century. While new computer-aided methods are widely discussed and applied, their roots and relation to previous production technology remain obscure. Christoph Schindler analyzes architecture from the perspective of production technology. It aims to contextualize contemporary research in the building industry—driven by information technology—and identify it as part of a continuous development in history of technology. The thesis is built around the scheme of a periodization model, which intends to integrate fabrication within manual, industrial and information technology. It is based on the relation between the three categories matter, energy, and information in each respective period. The validity of the model is proven with help of history of timber architecture, as no other construction method illustrates the relation between processing technology, fabrication methods and architecture more comprehensively over a comparable period of time. It will be studied whether the proposed model can be circumstantiated with historical facts— how constitutive changes in process technology influenced wood processing and how they respectively coined construction and appearance of timber architecture

"The structure and periodization of the Olmec representational system". Tulane University, 1990.

Streszczenie:
The present study is an attempt to isolate the structure and the developmental periods of the Olmec representational system. A systemic view and comparative analysis of this art yielded a breakdown of its component parts, established their range of variability, and provided an understanding about their articulation. Recurrent patterns of articulation revealed the major themes of the system. The term Olmec is limited to a specific art style, and not to the civilization The human form was the system's underlying form. Three main themes, or iconic complexes, emerged: the realistic Baby Face, the composite anthropomorph, and the composite zoomorph. Each theme showed specific associated motifs which, in some cases, were shared by the other two. The fundamental structure underlying the entire system is dual, one determining the naturalistic expression and the other the composite expression The temporal sequence of the Olmec representational system may be divided into three major periods. Olmec I (1200-1000 B.C.) is characterized by the presence of the composite zoomorph iconic complex, and by hollow and solid clay figurines depicting individuals with the realistic Baby Face type of visage. Monumental sculptures were apparently carved during the second half of the period. Olmec II (1000-700 B.C) is characterized by the appearance of the composite anthropomorph and its associated symbols. Portable carving was introduced in the form of realistic Baby Face individuals, the composite anthropomorph, stone copies of utilitarian objects and objects of adornment. New forms such as seated realistic Baby Face figures holding the composite anthropomorph and the same individuals dressed as the composite anthropomorph are added to the extant inventory of altars and colossal heads. Beginning at about 700 B.C., new forms and stylistic aspects are introduced into the system without significantly altering its structure, establishing the Modified Olmec period (700-400 B.C.). Composite representation related to serpent and avian pars pro toto elements became dominant. The realistic Baby Face individual is replaced by one with plain realistic features, the focus of representations carved on rock outcroppings, stelae, or painted on walls. Bouffard, Chevalier Xavier.

This research aims to circumscribe the epistemological foundations of modernity. It does so by an analysis of the crisis of modernity. To be more precise, we explore a dialogue between Reinhart Koselleck and Jürgen Habermas. The intent of this conversation is to show a common understanding of the epochal moment of modernity. That is, the theoretical boundaries in which the foundational moment of modernity was, and still is, theorized. To reveal this agreement, we analyze the concept of Neue Zeit in its relation to premodern history. In doing so, we show that both thinkers recognise the importance of a new time, understood as an open future. Moreover, both thinkers differ as to the role and position of the Neue Zeit in the foundation of modernity. To reveal this disagreement, we present the concept of aesthetical modernity. In doing so, our research shows that as Koselleck sees temporality as a driving historical force, Habermas disagrees and sees it rather as a result of a historical rationalisation process. Furthermore, our research reveals a substantial disagreement as to the reasons underlying this dialogue. Notably, we claim that the common ground that links both thinkers in their understanding of premodern history is descriptive, rather than theoretical. That is, it refers to the empirical content of history, and not to it’s underlying causes. With that claim in hand, we offer to explain why both thinkers agree on their understanding of premodern history, but not on modern history itself.

The aim of this dissertation is to analyse those poems in which the image of the knife, el cuchillo, appears in the collection El rayo que no cesa, by Miguel Hernandez. The poet manifests his all-encompassing tragic view of life by means of this recurring negative symbol. The poetry of Miguel Hernandez is autobiographical: The universal themes of nature, love and death reveal a close link between the course of his life and the evolution of his poetry. El rayo que no cesa is central to the evolution of Hernandez's poetry: it is the product of the crisis of conscience that propelled the poet toward a radical change of world-view. The book reveals his frustration with love within the rigid norms of the society of his time. The poet expresses his bitterness by means of destructive images such as knife, sword, and ray/flash, images that project the tragic fate that threatened his entire existence.

(11186181), Christina M. McCarter. "HINGED, BOUND, COVERED: THE SIGNIFYING POTENTIAL OF THE MATERIAL CODEX". Thesis, 2021.

Znajdź pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:

The idea of “the book” overflows with extraneous significance: books are presented as windows, gateways, vessels, lighthouses, and gardens. Books speak to us and feed us, and they are a method of escape. The book has long represented much more than a static, hinged, bound, covered object inscribed with words. Even when a book is not performing an elaborate, imaginative function, the word “book” very often signifies the text it holds or even the text’s author: You can open The Bluest Eye or carry Toni Morrison in your bag. Fourteenth-century author Geoffrey Chaucer invokes a “book” by “Lollius” as authoritative source of his Troilus and Criseyde, though no person exists; likewise, to conclude the same text, Chaucer asks directs his project to “go, litel bok, go.” When a book makes an appearance in narrative, it is rarely just a book—without legs, the book moves, and without breath, it lives. This dissertation asks what about the shape of the codex has helped the book become such a metaphorically rich signifier.

This dissertation attempts to unravel the various threads of meaning that make up the complex “idea of the book.” I focus on one of these threads: the book as a material object. By focusing on how the book as object—not the book as idea—functions within narrative, I argue that we can identify what about the book object enables its metaphorical range. I analyze moments in literature, television, and film when metaphorical functions are assigned, not to an ephemeral, complex idea of the book, but rather to the material realities of the book as an object. In these moments, the codex’s essential, material shape (what I am calling its bookishness) enables metaphorical functioning; I show that, by examining when mundanely physical bindings, pages, covers, and spines initiate metaphorical action, we can identify how the material book has come to mean so much more than itself.

Indeed, despite a renewed appreciation for the book as both material and cultural object, books have become so significantly meaningful that attempts to define “the book” evade simplicity, rendering books as everything and nothing at the same time. My inquire explores this complexity by starting with a simple premise: Metaphors are based on some element of physical truth. Though the book has sprouted in a variety of metaphorical directions, many of those metaphors are grounded in the book’s material realities. Acknowledging this, especially in an age of fast-evolving media and bookish fetishism, offers a valuable and novel perspective on how and why books are both semantically rich and culturally valued objects.

In this article, it will be conducted a study on the historical course of accounting in the Republic of Moldova (after independence in 1991) with the establishment of periods of changes, periodization in terms of regulatory approach and description of the specific aspect. It is well known that accounting has been and is dependent on the economic and social development. Therefore, over time, accounting is going through a process of modernization in the Republic of Moldova, and to know the tendency of accounting evolution in the Republic of Moldova in the future, you really need to know its history so far. The research aims to identify the challenges and effects of changes in accounting. The research used scientific research methods, such as: analysis of the legal framework governing the study, synthesis of information, comparison to identify distinctive features, deduction of challenges, and impact assessment through the effects of accounting reforms.

The present research deals with the publication “Kharkiv calendar” as one of the specific sources of local history. It should be rightfully attributed as a separate type of periodicals – “statistical-information collection”. Similar publications were spread in almost all regions of the Russian Empire in the 19th and early 20th centuries and were named “calendars” or “memorable books”. They have their own specifics and therefore need special approach for their study. According to his own experience, the author presents certain directions of investigation of these sources. It may be suggested the following steps of work with them: identifying of the specificity and transformations of the structure of these sources (separation of traditional and novel rubrics); analysis of balance between local, all-imperial and worldwide data (there was dynamics of this information); classification of scientific and popular-science materials; periodization of functioning of periodicals; focus on specificity of gathering of statistical information that had published in these collections.

Milan Kašanin (1895–1981) in his integral study of medieval Serbian culture pays significant attention to the works and authors who created in the time of King Stefan Uroš II Milutin Nemanjića (1282–1321). Kašanin’s analysis also includes medieval literary and artistic achievements whose central theme is the King's personality and symbols of rule, as well as the spiritual and socio-histor- ical characteristics of the era the era of this important founder and great artistic patron. The author of the monographs Serbian Literature in the Middle Ages (1975) and Stone Discoveries (1978) seeks to systematize knowledge of the cul- tural past, to explain the spiritual and historical forces of the time, to understand Byzantine influences on art forms and meanings, to find elements of original art within medieval Serbian culture and to establish the most reliable periodization of literary and artistic styles. Methodologically, in examining the key focuses of a historically limited period, such as the Middle Ages, Kašanin insists on mutual “illumination of art”. He also connects the poetic and spiritual-aesthetic features of specific literary achievements with medieval church and secular architecture, fresco painting or icon painting, but also with socio-political factors. Therefore, we tried to outline the analytical and methodological framework of Kašanin’s spiritual, historical, and aesthetic thought from the point of view of the history of literary criticism, concerning the way in which he had perceived and named the artistic forms of Milutin’s epoch, art forms in which Milutin’s age and literary achievements of monk Theodosius and archbishop Danilo II.

The article is devoted to the results of archaeological investigation of barbican – one of the strategic points of fortification in the Belgorod-Dnestrovskyi fortress. In spite of being of Eastern origin, barbican became one of the types of defensive structures in Europe. The typological and chronological periodization of the building of Belgorod’s barbican includes the following stages. It was constructed in the XV century on the territory of the Moldavian Principality all together with the Low Wall, as part of the early period of the history of the fortress. Similar to the other European barbican buildings of the same time in Torun, Krakow, Lvov, it represents the structure of the tower type. The tower is connected with the main room of barbican through the gallery; the entrance was discovered in the course of excavation. The square of the earliest structure of barbican is about 250 m2. The reconstruction of barbican took place in the Ottoman period of the fortress, as part of the bastion system connected with the further development of artillery. The main elements of the first phase of building, such as of the tower and the planning in the trapezoid shape can be seen on gravures of the beginning of the XIX century.

Streszczenie:
The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) index for the 125-year-old (since 1896) history has experienced many crises of different nature and, reflecting the dynamics of the world stock market, is an ideal model object for the study of quantitative indicators and precursors of crisis phenomena. In this paper, the classification and periodization of crisis events for the DJIA index have been carried out; crashes and critical events have been highlighted. Based on the modern paradigm of the theory of complexity, a spectrum of entropy indicators and precursors of crisis phenomena have been proposed. The entropy of a complex system is not only a measure of uncertainty (like Shannon's entropy) but also a measure of complexity (like the permutation and Tsallis entropy). The complexity of the system in a crisis changes significantly. This fact can be used as an indicator, and in the case of a proactive change as a precursor of a crisis. Complex systems also have the property of scale invariance, which can be taken into account by calculating the Multiscale entropy. The calculations were carried out within the framework of the sliding window algorithm with the subsequent comparison of the entropy measures of complexity with the dynamics of the DJIA index itself. It is shown that Shannon's entropy is an indicator, and the permutation and Tsallis entropy are the precursors of crisis phenomena to the same extent for both crashes and critical events.
