New communications technologies offer museum curators opportunities to create exhibitions that are ‘open’ to diverse interpretations and are ‘democratic’ in privileging no particular interpretation. However, a fascination with the new forms of exhibition that communications technologies offer can distract us from the fact that they inevitably represent a particular view of the past. Reconsidering the collection of articles titled ‘Museums and New Media’ (Media International Australia incorporating Culture and Policy, no. 89) highlights the need to assert the primacy of historiography over the technologies of its representation.

Streszczenie:
The basic strategies for constructing the framework of the Ukrainian national historical and historiographic narratives in the late 19th and early 20th centuries are analyzed in the first part of the paper. The nationalization of Ukrainian history and historical writing and the decisive role in forming the Ukrainian project of the pre-modern Little Russian nation are shown. The main mechanisms of the process are revealed, such as the historiographic expansion of the Little Russian intellectual range, the consolidation and ethnicization of regional history of the metropolises, the building of linear, teleological constructions, and the anthropologization of the ethnic community. Attention is paid to the technology of forming images of neighbors as contouring enemies. The authors demonstrate the methods for implementing the basic principles of constructing a national narrative in the practice of historical writing. Three competing strategies for creating large Ukrainian national histories that have had a decisive influence on the algorithms of modern didactic, affirmative and analytical historiography are presented. In the second part of the paper, contemporary approaches to the modernization of the traditional national narrative determined during the discussion of 2012−2014 are identified: 1) the deconstruction of national narrative, the rejection of the «tyranny» of asynchronous territoriality, and the development of dual research optics (the methodology of regional history and the integration of national history into the contexts of large cultural communities); 2) the decorative updating of the national narrative through the implementation of a multinational approach; 3) the middle position of «pluralistic indifference», consistent with the arguments of the extreme parties. It is noted that the current socio-political situation has formed an increased demand for the modernization of the ethno-national narrative of the early 20th century, which threatens to discard Ukrainian historiography to the standards of historiography at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.

This article is devoted to the insight of the migration process in the diachronic aspect on the example of Scythians history. This choice is caused by the fact that the information about the Scythians, their arrival in Eastern Europe and movements in the ancient Oecumene, is one of the main problems of Scythian archaeology. A significant range of sources contains information about the arrival of the Scythians and their movements in Europe. These sources include both the works of historians of Antiquity and Modern Times, as well as the works of modern archaeologists. The change of ideas about the Scythians migration is reviewed in accordance with the concept of the information technology shifts, which was put forward by Russian scientists Y.L. Shchapova and S.N. Grinchenko, specifically: information technology of articulate speech and language, information technology of writing, information technology of book printing, information technology of computers, information technology of networks. As result, conclusions were drawn from oral traditions about the vision changes on the causes of migration, about the arrival of a mythological hero – first ancestor at an unpopulated land, wars and tribal confrontation in the era of information technology of speech and language and information technology of writing.

Technology is a need among modern community that ensures new knowledge and can be shared and utilized together. In teaching and learning, technology usage can be considered as a tool that can improve students’ cognitive, psychomotor and effective, also can interconnect with each other. Without technology, the learning world can be classified as a backward era. Therefore, through the interactive connection, learning can be more interesting and effective. Thus, the effectiveness of students’ needs will be measured either interactive connection that attracts students’ interest or vice-versa. Therefore, the objectives of the study are to determine the response towards online teaching interactive, also to analize and summarize UPM students online interactive connection by using the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). This research applied online questionnaire by using the Monkey Survey website. The article is the second part of the study, which examines the issues related to the study of the history of population and historical demography of Kyrgyzstan. The emphasis is made on the issues of historiography on the basis of scientific literature on the history and demography of Kyrgyzstan in the 20th — 21st centuries. The analysis and assessment of the main demographic indicators of the population of Kyrgyzstan in the Soviet and post-Soviet periods is considered, the processes of change in demographic policy, as well as its impact on the socio-economic situation in the republic, are analyzed. It is concluded that the historiography of the historiography of the historical demography of Kyrgyzstan is based on macro approached to the study of demographic processes, which was typical for Soviet historical science as a whole. For the further development of historical demography in Kyrgyzstan, it is necessary to expand the methodological toolkit, in particular, an appeal to primary sources and modern information technologies. In historiography, in the last decade, theoretical and methodological issues of the application of GIS technology in historical research experiments have been developed and supported.

Streszczenie:
The article examines the historiography of the transfer of industrial technologies in the first third of the XX century. This historical period is of particular interest to researchers. It was at this time that the Soviet model of forced industrial modernization was taking shape. In order to achieve the set goals in the shortest possible time, the Soviet state most actively used the mechanisms of scientific and technical cooperation with foreign countries. Thanks to the scientific and technical policy pursued by him, this cooperation soon acquired a complex, systematic character and, ultimately, took a stable form of technology transfer. The work is based on the provisions of modernization theory, according to which technology transfer is considered as one of the key mechanisms of technological modernization of production. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the fact that no detailed research of historiography on the topic has been conducted to date. The author attempts to eliminate this obvious gap. In addition, one of the goals of this study is to promote the further development of the concept of technological transfer, which involves the transition to a systematic analysis of certain facts of scientific and technical cooperation of the USSR with foreign countries. The paper concludes that despite the extensive historiography on the topic, there are still numerous gaps that have yet to be filled by scientists. At the same time, at the current stage, of particular importance is not the search for factual material itself, which is already very extensive, but the reinterpretation of existing facts from the point of view of the provisions of the theory of modernization and the concept of technological transfer. This will make it possible to bring a systematic approach to the ongoing research on the topic and to make a comprehensive study of the state's scientific and technical policy in the first third of the XX century.

The purpose of the article is to define the level of the scientific research on the hygiene studies development on the territory of Ukraine from the second part of XIX century till the 1920s under the conditions of the social-economical and political challenges of that time. Research methods: logical, chronological, comparative-historical, analytical-syntactical, classification, periodization, historical-genetical, and structural. Main results. This article deals with the scientific contribution into defining the challenges of hygiene studies development in Ukraine from the second part of XIX century till the 1920s. We have analyzed the main historiographic periods in the establishment and development of the hygiene science, all existing methodological approaches in historiography, and the theoretical paradigms in this field. Three historiographic periods concerning this topic were highlighted: the first period – from the second part of ХІХ till 1917; the second period – the soviet one, from 1917 till the end of 1980s; the third period – the modern one, beginning from 1991 till now. We analyzed Ukrainian historiography in terms of the establishment and development of the hygiene as a science, taking into consideration socio-economical and political changes in the country during the second part of the ХІХ till 1920s. Historiography, which reveals the hygiene science development at universities comprises of the significant amount of historical, statistical, encyclopedic, and methodological literature, which reflects the content, structure, organization, university research staff, which allows us to consider the development of hygiene science at the university level as essential in its transformation into a branch of science, a form of the social consciousness, and a part of culture of the society. Hygiene became a science which can make practical recommendations and respond to social needs. Experimental research in the hygiene were conducted at the university departments and at the state research laboratories. In the field of historiography, there were numerous scientific works on the development of hygiene as a science at the universities and in social medicine. Manuals, books, terminology dictionaries for doctors and students were issued during this period. Numerous terms were also defined, for example, “prophylaxis”, “hygiene”, “social hygiene”, “civil hygiene”, “social medicine”. It’s worth mentioning that these terms keep being updated. The significant contribution to the hygiene issues research was made by the outstanding scientists from the universities in Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Novorosiysk, where the respective hygiene departments were established and all the fundamental and applied research were conducted, improved, and expanded. Practical significance. This article is recommended for the courses of the history of Ukraine, science and technology, social medicine ,and for the course of the history of science and technology. Originality. In this article we analyzed and summed up the experience of the Ukrainian scientists, who had studied the history of the hygiene studies, in order to define the most effective model of hygiene component of the social medicine nowadays. The innovative component. We put forward the brand-new prospective of the hygiene studies development from the second part of the XIX century till the 1920s, taking into consideration the historical documents and research paradigms. Moreover, the research assessments under the social-political changes Ukraine from the second part of the XIX century till the 1920s were established. Article type: descriptive.

The sudden and permeating rise of digital technologies has been widely investigated by film critics and scholars. However, most studies tend to focus on the impact of digital technologies on contemporary film production, distribution, exhibition and the finished products it brings forth, reserving too little attention to the massive digitization of born-analog films. The production of digital motion pictures marks an unprecedented breaking point in history, putting the very nature of “film” and “cinema” at stake, while the digitization of film prints risks having an irreversible feedback effect on cinema's technological history. Focusing on two case studies—the 1995 restoration of the 1949 color version of Jacques Tati's Jour de fête and the discovery of some 16mm reels on nitrate stock in a collection deposited with the Museo Nazionale del Cinema in Torino, Italy—we illuminate the importance of technology for film historiography and reassert the need for a joint effort on the part of archives and academic institutions in the preservation of film memory for future generations.

Abstract The Second International Conference of the History of Science, Technology, and Medicine, held in London in 1931, exerted a profound influence on the historiography of science, giving rise to a new research field in the anglophone world at the intersection of social and political studies and the history of science and technology. In particular, Boris Hessen’s presentation on the Social and Economic Roots of Newton’s Principia successfully ushered in a new tradition in the historiography of science. This article introduces and discusses the London conference as a benchmark in the history of the social study of science within a Marxist and materialist tradition. In contemporary science and technology studies, political epistemology, and the study of society-nature interaction, it is no less relevant today than it was at the beginning of the fabulous 1930s. In reconstructing some important theses presented by the Soviet delegation in London, we aim to revive the conference’s legacy and the approach promoted on that occasion as a pretext to address current debates about society’s major transition toward a new agency and ways of existence in the Earth system. In particular, the London conference invited us to think of the growing metabolic rift between society, technology, and nature, and further reflects a historical moment of profound environmental and political crisis.

The idea that firearms promote centralized government has a venerable pedigree in European historiography. Friedrich Engels observed that the new weapons of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries wrought substantial changes on class relations as merchants allied themselves with monarchs to wrest control of firearms from nobles and to reap the benefits of emerging mercantile states. The history of firearms thus conceived highlights the cultural content of technology and may provide more than a barren chronicle of destructive tools, as illustrated in J. U. The history of scientific study of medieval edged weapons dates back over 200 years. During this time a lot of information has been accumulated and this knowledge is a necessary basis for further research. However, the methods and approaches by which that data was obtained deserve special attention. Traditions to collect ancient artifacts significantly influenced the formation of scientific interest in bladed weapons. The first attempts to analyze the material were related the need to catalog it. For the 19th century, we can talk about different scientific works in which the main or significant attention was paid to edged weapons. Shaping of approaches to the study of ancient weapons which are central today developed gradually. Standards of description of items, typology, and technology and material analysis, studying of artifacts in a broad cultural context became the main vectors of work with medieval edged weapon. At the turn of the 20th – 21st centuries development of chemical and physical sciences, the complication of the methodological apparatus and the accumulation of archaeological material narrowly focused works built on in-depth analysis of small groups of artifacts and use of specific research methods. The interdisciplinary approach, which involves the research of one problem by specialists in different fields of science, has taken a significant place in the edged weapon studying. Thus, the further development of the classical approaches, combined with the new ones emerging at the boundaries of the disciplines, opens up new opportunities for gaining the most accurate knowledge about past through the study of blade weapons. Like any part of the past, blade weapons as a source can be perceived by the researcher entirely subjectively, so it is important to understand the limits of this perception and the accents it provides. The analysis of the process of formation of research strategies and methods which widely used today makes it possible to determine further optimal ways of their development. As well as it allows assuming which previously obtained ideas and assertion require verification.

AbstractIn the last three decades many historians of science have sought to account for the emergence of modern science and technology in sites that did not participate in the shaping of apparently original ideas. They have extensively used a model of the transfer of scientific ideas and practices from centres of scientific activity to a passively receptive periphery. This paper contributes to the discussion of an alternative historiographic approach, one that employs the notion of appropriation to direct attention towards the receptive modes and devices of a local culture. A historiography built around the notion of appropriation deals less with the question of the faithful transfer of scientific ideas than with the particular features of the discourse produced by local scholars as the best way to overcome or conform to the constraints of the receptive culture. The case examined to describe this culturally and intellectually intricate process is the profound transformation undergone by the Newtonian concept of vis inertiae in the work of Eugenios Voulgaris (1716–1806), one of the most important Greek scholars of the eighteenth century.

Self-curation can be employed by musicians to re-present their work as a historiographical project of popular music and as an intervention in dominant critical accounts of the musicians' creative practices. The challenge to conventional historiography can be understood as a project of archaeology in the Foucauldian sense, where discourses surrounding objects and their histories may be contested and reinvigorated through a process of recollecting/re-collecting that also recalls Walter Benjamin's challenge to historicism. Using the work of Robert Fripp and King Crimson as an example of musician-curated recordings, I argue that legal and economic control may become a basis for aesthetic control, through which histories of creativity may be rewritten. The act of recollection/re-collection becomes a route through which musicians are able to engage with critical contexts and genre formations, and to contribute actively to the material culture of their own history.

The subject of the study is the existing classification of graphic art of anarchist periodicals of the turn of the XIX–XX centuries. The object of the research is publications devoted to the problem of compiling a classification of works of graphic art of anarchism. These are the works of R. and E. Herbertov, A. Dardel, L. Litvak, J. Godard-Davant, K. Ferguson - foreign experts in the field of anarchist graphics. There are no domestic publications on this topic. The author of the article pays special attention to the similarity in approaches to the classification of different authors and the existing gaps in this field of art criticism in order to determine further prospects for the study of the issues under consideration. The scientific novelty of the work is to clarify the classification trends not systematized in Russian historiography, proposed in the literature in English, French and Spanish, on the basis of which a methodological basis for the analysis of the topic is being developed. The methods used in the work are as follows: analysis of historiography in order to identify existing approaches to the study of graphics of anarchist periodicals; comparative analysis, which allows us to compare the two main trends (according to the thematic-iconographic and figurative-thematic principle) with each other, finding further perspectives of interpretation and existing gaps. The results of the study reveal the existing tradition of classification, the authors of which promote their methods, preventing the emergence of other approaches and types of classification that can shed light not only on the image of an anarchist, but also on the peculiarities of the dialogue between anarchist graphics and the artistic avant-garde.

This paper contributes to the introductory study on the sociocultural impact of immersive technology or ImT, in the form of 360 video capture and virtual reality projection. A young technology in the field of visual language, ImT challenges the supremacy of the frame in cinematic mediums—TV, video, film—and, in effect, introduces new notions in visual grammar of the multimodality of moving images, aka the kineikonic mode of media theorist Andrew Burn (2013). Using the dialogic system of Mikhail Bakhtin, this paper situates the place of immersive technology in the historiography of visual language, from the proscenium of the classical theater to cinema, and to virtual reality. In doing so, this study is able to demonstrate how immersive technology becomes the newest expression of mankind’s linguistic resolve to transcend its physical limitations in the field of communication, information production and consumption, knowledge transfer, and dissemination of cultures.

The Almoravid conquest of ancient Ghana in 1076 AD is certainly among the most dramatic and controversial single events in the historiography of West Africa. It has been regarded as a crucial turning point, as the battle of Hastings was for England, not only for the existence of Ghana, but also for the destiny of the entire area, opening the gates to a triumphant Islam in sub-Saharan Africa.Yet the conquest and destruction of Ghana by Almoravid invaders constitute one of the myths which still populate African historiography, like the wonderful voyage of Hanno to the Bight of Biafra, which was carried over from classical Greco-Roman texts into modern European literature as early as 1533. Since then the story of Hanno has been used for various purposes by western Africanists, for instance, to explain the diffusion of iron technology into sub-Saharan Africa. Just the same, no definite evidence has yet been found for any Carthaginian sailings along the West African coast, except the Periplus of Hanno itself, which seems to be a literary composition drawn from earlier classical sources. A reason for the popularity of Hanno, and other such stories in African historiography, has been that many modern writers have been content with using the previous secondary literature, instead of examining carefully all the available primary sources. Consequently, many subjective and hypothetical assumptions created by previous scholars, working on the basis of even less evidence, have been transferred bodily from one corpus of research to the next. Finally, their origin forgotten, stories like the voyage of Hanno have become established historical facts through constant repetition in the authorized literature.

AbstractComparative writing about the history of science and technology in different cultures tends to assume that differences in the ways in which these cultures write their histories are not important. But this is unlikely to be the case. The comparative lack of historical writing about printing in China by European standards should not in itself lead us to conclude that print only played a minor role there, any more than the tendency to downplay the importance of paper among historians of the European book means that its use in Europe was less significant than in other cultures. That in China the relative balance of the historical record is the opposite of the one that we tend to assume on the basis of the European experience is demonstrated here by contrasting the dearth of information about early printing with the commemoration even of relatively marginal cultural figures through the traditional Chinese historiography of paper making. But only tentative suggestions can be made as to why these differences in historical writing may have occurred.

This article aimed to describe the history of wayang potehi development in Indonesia especially during the New Order period that became a dark time for its development. This study used historical research methods including heuristic step or source searching, source critics, data interpretation, and historiography or historical writing. The results showed that wayang potehi began to develop in Indonesia as the coming of Chinese immigrants around the 17th century and experienced acculturation with local culture. Wayang potehi experienced dark times when emerged the discriminatory rule of the New Order government against all things related to Chinese culture. The restraint to freedom of expression and preservation of wayang potehi cut off the chain of inheritor generation.DOI: https://doi.org/10.24071/ijhs.2017.010105

Nihon Senshi (Military History of Japan) was part of the new Imperial Japanese Army’s attempt to tie itself to examples from Japan’s “warring states” period, similar to scholars who created a feudal “medieval” time in the Japanese past to fit into Western historiography, and intellectuals who discovered a “traditional” spirit called bushidō as a counterpart for English chivalry. The interpretations of these campaigns, placing the “three unifiers” of the late sixteenth century as global leaders in the modernization of military tactics and technology, show the Imperial Japanese Army’s desire to be seen as a “modern” military through its invented “institutional” history.

This research is part of a larger study aimed at reconstructing the various ways in which professional historiography and other non-academic historical discourses have dealt with the relationship between Science and Peronism in contemporary Argentina. The purpose of this study is to analyze the overly simplistic image of this relationship that still persists in social memory and, to a large extent, continues to influence historical research agendas and the more general political debate. The article provides a bibliographic review and offers a reading key, useful for future research agendas, in which the history of science and that of Peronism intersects, coming from both professional historiography and of the disciplinary histories many times rehearsed by the scientific community itself. These investigations cover a multitude of topics, but for reasons of space and focus, we will focus here mainly on those disciplines that, broadly speaking, we could encompass within the “exact and natural sciences” and engineering. Based on these considerations, it is possible to observe that this field of study still reproduces a set of stereotypes that limit historical knowledge about the period, both with regard to the insertion of Peronism in a long-term reading of state policies in science and technology, as in its insertion in the history of the university in Argentina.

History writing has always been a tough challenge in Pakistan. It is difficult to understand the real picture of history because the history of past events, stories and issues is not stored in its actual form. Historians are trying to provide new interpretations for the already used source materials and also use previously unused sources. In present scenario, history subject is not based on old stories, political events, and famous personalities of the countries. Role of the scholars, the thinkers, and professional experts was very significant in past but unfortunately, we don’t have people like them in present who can give the new ideas to overcome these crises. At present some role was played by Dr. Mubarak Ali. He introduced the new approach of history writing. This paper is designed to ornate the contribution of Dr. Mubarak Ali in historiography in Pakistan exploring the new trends of history and to give a critical analysis of his works. The nature of the research is descriptive.

Apart from descriptions of ideas of race, Australian historiography has not perceived acts of violence to Aboriginal people in their wider social and political context. Analysis of perpetrators has derived from family histories but this, so far, has been limited to studies of emotion. One family’s and one area’s experience of frontier violence shows that it was thought about in terms of ‘volunteering’ and democratic participation. The new technology of the telegraph brought violence and its description closer and ‘brave’ and ‘gallant’ men sought to involve themselves in war. They also recognized political divisions among Aboriginal people and negotiated a complex realm of ‘friendly blacks’.

Readers in the historiography of colonial south India have every reason to feel puzzled by the answers available to even the most straightforward of questions. Was the colonial conquest achieved through the imposition of ‘superior’ European arms, technology and ideology or was it more in the nature of an internal subversion of the pre-existing Indian state system? Did British rule fundamentally alter the structures of South Indian society or did it rest lightly on top of pre-existing structures and serve to sustain established elites? Did it undermine the hold of ‘indigenous’ cultures on society or did it merely scratch their surface or even did it promote their revival?
