The essays collected in Donum discuss different aspects of Florentine art from the 16th to the 18th century, such as sculptures displayed in gardens and palaces, the collecting preferences and strategies of the Medici family and those of the Tuscan aristocracy, drawings and paintings by local and foreign artists, and baroque wall decoration: these topics are analyzed in light of newly discovered artworks or previously unpublished documents. The common thread binding the papers together is the research method based on the study of archival sources and historical contexts, and on the connoisseurship. The Gardens, Edinburgh is a group of five artefacts – consisting of three folios of drawings, a set of paper objects in a wedge-shaped box, and a publication made from linen. It was produced as an investigation into the history of the Royal Scottish Academy and the adjacent Princes Street Gardens in Edinburgh, and originally exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy in 2015. The output was commissioned by Visual Art Scotland 2015, for their annual exhibition at the Royal Scottish Academy. It combines drawings, paper folding techniques and digital printing with historical and contextual research to investigate two key aspects of the site: first, the development of the linen industry in Scotland during the eighteenth century; second, the layout of the gardens, particularly the relation between the formal design arrangements and the growth of indigenous plants that infiltrate planned spaces. These interests tie into Hyslop’s longstanding research into the social and industrial history of Scotland and its impact on the land. Works from the exhibition were purchased and exhibited by the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art and the National Library of Scotland.

This handbook presents a broad sampling of current historical scholarship on Shakespeare’s period that it is hoped will prove useful to scholars of his poems and plays. Rather than attempting to summarize the historical ‘background’ to Shakespeare, individual chapters explore numerous topics and methodologies at the forefront of current historical research. An initial cluster shows how political history has expanded beyond a traditional focus on relations between Crown and Parliament to encompass attention to attempts by the government to manage opinion; military challenges; problems in subduing Ireland and mediating relations between the British kingdoms; and the interplay between national affairs and local factions and concerns. Additional chapters deal with relationships between intellectual culture and political imagination, with detailed attention to varieties of early modern historical thought and the emergence of a ‘public sphere’. Other contributors examine facets of religious and social history, including scriptural translation, concepts of the devil, cultural attitudes concerning honour, shame and emotion, and life in London. A final section deals with vernacular architecture, Renaissance gardens, visual culture and theatrical music.

But how sustainable is this green wave? Will it lift all boats? In New York City, Melissa Checker finds that sustainable initiatives have fostered resource-intensive, high-end development in some areas and left others overburdened with polluting facilities and under-protected from climate change. Checker weaves together ethnographic and historic detail to tell the story of local activists who struggle to improve the environmental health of their neighborhoods while maintaining their affordability. For over a decade, Checker’s research on “environmental gentrification”—the use of environmental improvements to drive high-end redevelopment—has exposed the paradoxes of urban sustainability. This book develops an intricate and comprehensive account of environmental gentrification, from its historic roots to the different forms it takes. Extending this analysis, Checker also challenges popular myths about civic engagement: her work alongside environmental justice activists reveals how institutional mechanisms meant to foster public participation and community empowerment have actually undermined both. Between 1962 and 1971, the Centro Latinoamericano de Altos Estudios Musicales (CLAEM) of the Di Tella Institute in Buenos Aires became the central hub of Latin American avant-garde music. With the support of the Rockefeller Foundation and the wealthy Di Tella family, CLAEM offered two-year fellowships to some of the most recognized young composers of the region to undertake graduate studies in a unique privileged setting under the direction of Alberto Ginastera and with permanent and visiting faculty that included Gerardo Gandini, Francisco Kröpfl, Mario Davidovsky, Iannis Xenakis, Luigi Nono, Aaron Copland, Luigi Dallapiccola, Bruno Maderna, Riccardo Malipiero, Olivier Messiaen, Roger Sessions, and Earle Brown. This book combines oral histories, ethnographic research, and archival sources to reveal CLAEM as a meeting point of US and Argentine philanthropy, local experiences in transnational currents of artistic experimentation and innovation, and regional discourses of musical Latin Americanism. The story of CLAEM shows how musical avant-gardes were articulated, embodied, resignified, and institutionalized in Latin America; how composers during the 1960s engaged with discourses of Latin Americanism as professional strategy, identification marker, and musical style; and sheds light into the role of art in the legitimation and construction of elite status and identity. By looking at CLAEM as both an artistic and a philanthropic project, the book illuminates the relationships among foreign policy, corporate interests, and funding for the arts concerning Latin America and the United States in the mid-twentieth century.

We are currently facing significant challenges in environmental management that must be addressed to maintain the health of our planet and our population. While carbon offsetting in its various forms is widespread globally, few countries have fully legislated and put into operation other offset policies. This edited collection aims to fill the gap of knowledge on environmental offsets, from theory to practice.
Environmental Offsets addresses four major forms of environmental offsets – biodiversity offsets, carbon offsets, offsetting the depletion of non-renewable resources and offsetting the destruction of built heritage. The authors discuss their research and provide case studies from around Australia and across the developing world. Using examples such as the Sydney Olympics, the Bakossi Forest Reserve in Cameroon and green roof gardens, this book highlights the strengths and weaknesses of environmental offsetting and illustrates how jobs can be created in the offsetting process.
Environmental Offsets is both a historical source in our understanding of environmental offsetting and a guide to the way forward. It illustrates what works, what does not and what can be improved for the future.

The product of a decade of research, The Iranian Expanse is a study of the natural and built environments of power in Persia and the ancient Iranian world from the consolidation of the Achaemenid Empire in the sixth century BCE to the fall of the Sasanian Empire in the seventh century CE. It analyzes the formation and development of some of the most enduring expressions of power in Persia and the ancient Iranian world: palaces, paradise gardens and hunting enclosures, royal cities, sanctuaries and landscapes marked with a rich history of rock art and ritual activity. It explores how these structures, landscapes and urban spaces constructed and transformed Iranian imperial cosmologies, royal identities, and understandings of the past. While previous studies have often noted startling continuities between the traditions of the Achaemenids and the art and architecture of medieval or Early Modern Islam, they have routinely downplayed or ignored the tumultuous millennium between Alexander and Islam. The first study of its kind, the Iranian Expanse shows how the Seleucids, Arsacids and Sasanians played a transformative role in the development of a new Iranian royal culture that impacted early Islam and the wider Persianate world of such dynasties as the Il-Khans, Safavids, Timurids and Mughals.

This practice-led research output is a new public gathering and performance space within the Category B Listed Lamer Island Battery in Dunbar. The civil defensive bastion was built in 1781. The new battery design exploits the site’s palimpsest, using the layers of history to inform and guide the design and distribution of various contemporary interventions. The project demonstrated how a crossdisciplinary approach to design in the public realm under the leadership of regeneration landscape architects can impact positively on communities locally and further afield. As a work of conservation, adaption and renewal, the project provides a model for the radical reinvention of coastal ruins and the greater understanding and dissemination of Scottish coastal history. A process of archaeological investigation preceded and informed the design work at each stage. A responsive and sympathetic approach was taken to the discovery of further elements of historic interest as they were uncovered during the course of construction. The most significant new structure, the amphitheatre, is integrated into the void formed by the walls of the former hospital building so as to leave the trace of the hospital untouched. Community engagement was continuous over the course of the project with a dedicated website set up to gather views and inform local residents of progress. Since its completion in spring 2017 the battery has hosted numerous musical concerts, private functions, performances, and a Christmas carol service. The space continues to be maintained by local people including those who care for the coastal garden. In addition to its increasing use by local people the new battery plays an important role in attracting visitors to the town from further afield. The project has been published in a number of journals and websites internationally and has received a number of national design awards.

Women Art Dealers brings together fascinating case studies of galleries run by women between the 1940s and 1980s. It marks a departure from other work in the field of art markets, challenging male-dominated histories by analyzing the work of female dealers who anticipated the global model, worked to promote art across continents, and thus developed an international art market. Part 1 focuses on the women gallerists behind the promotion of modern art after World War II who participated in important research about the neo-Avant-Garde. Part 2 examines the contributions by women art dealers toward the birth of new markets - through establishing the reputation of artistic genres, such as video art and photography, and working at the forefront of advancing contemporary art. Finally, Part 3 analyzes case studies from the southern European art scene, paying fresh attention to several under-researched markets in the region, like Italy and Portugal. Each chapter study provides a historiographic profile of the gallery under discussion and critical analysis is supported with a wide range of visual material including portraits of the women art dealers, photographs of the exhibitions they managed, and printed documentation like catalogues, invitations, and posters that were often used to support artists on display in experimental ways.

This chapter offers a brief and necessarily incomplete overview of what has been written on the interdisciplinary arts within academic scholarship on the creative arts. The author identifies five major integrative aspects highlighted in the existing literature on the interdisciplinary arts: (1) the Wagnerian Gestamtkunstwerk, i.e., the `total work of art;’ (2) the legacy of the historical avant-garde, with its focus on radical juxtaposition; (3) the continuation of post WWII arts experimentation in between and among multiple art mediums simultaneously with Happenings, intermedia and multimedia; (4) the intersections between art, science, and/or technology; and (5) interdisciplinary arts as its own emergent subject of inquiry, practice, and research. The chapter additionally includes a brief overview of the transdisciplinary arts. It concludes with the observation that considerations of current developments in interdisciplinary arts will serve to advance the understanding of interdisciplinarity in general.

Ekspedīcijas un pētījums ir veikts projekta Nr. LLI-444 “Jaunu ilgtspējīgu risinājumu integrācija kultūras mantojumā/ NovelForHeritage” (Aktivitāte: T.1.5. Research of historical materials and knowledge on G.Kuphaldt parks and gardens and creation of the set of materials) ietvaros, kas tiek realizēts Eiropas Reģionālās attīstības fonda (ERAF) Interreg V-A Latvijas – Lietuvas pārrobežu sadarbības programmā 2014-2020. gadam. Šis pētījums ir sagatavots ar Eiropas Savienības finansiālo atbalstu. Par šī pētījuma saturu pilnībā atbild Latvijas Biozinātņu un tehnoloģiju universitāte un tā nekādos apstākļos nav uzskatāma par Eiropas Savienības oficiālo nostāju. Ekspedīciju laikā izdevās apmeklēt parkus un dārzus trīs valstīs – Latvijā (Rīga, Liepāja, Eleja, Pelči, Kazdanga), Lietuvā (Pakroje, Žagare, Šeduva), Igaunijā (Oustvere un Pērnava). Parkus, kas atrodas privātā īpašumā, daļēji nebija iespējams apmeklēt, dēļ ierobežotas piekļuves. Apmeklētajiem parkiem ir veikta padziļināta parku analīze - parka veidošanās vēsture, parka telpiskā struktūra, dendroloģiskais sastāvs, arhitektoniskie elementi un parka mūsdienu funkcionālā izmantošana. Šī pētījuma mērķis ir analizēt Kūfalta plānotos un realizētos parkus no to ainavas telpiskā viedokļa, kas no tā ir saglabājies mūsdienās, kā parki spēj pielāgoties mūsdienu funkcionālajai izmantošanai. Pētījuma gaitā tika atlasīta informācija par parku un muižu vēsturi, par pašiem parkiem un apstādījumiem vai to plānojumiem. Pētījuma ietvaros izmantoto informācijas avotu klāsts iekļauj vēsturiskās grāmatas, attēlus, plānus, kā arī aprakstus. Plašs apkopojums par Rīgas parkiem ir Latvijas Nacionālas bibliotēkas fondā, savukārt par muižu parkiem Māras Ilzes Janelis grāmata vēl joprojām ir favorīts, analizējot muižas parku veidošanās vēsturi, kā arī tipiskās kļūdas un ieteikumus vēsturisko parku apsaimniekošanai un plānošanai. Ir izdevies arī turēt rokās un lasīt Kūfalta rakstīto grāmatu “Die Praxis der angewandten Dendrologie in Park und Garten”, kas ir praktisks ieskats augu sortimentā, ko Kūfalts izmantoja savos plānojumos. As the last generation of underground artists in the Soviet Union and the first on the post-Soviet scene, Moscow conceptualists provide a unique point of view on the breakup of the USSR, the changing role of unofficial art in a repressive state, and the beginning of a new world order in both art and politics. Offering a counter-narrative to the tradition of Socialist Realism that dominates Soviet art history, this book provides insight into the production and activism of the experimental artists that worked in Moscow during this watershed moment in Russian history. Based on extensive original research and in-depth interviews with the original artists, Nicholas demonstrates how the work of these radical, unconventional artists challenged the Soviet authorities, official doctrine, and even other colleagues in the nonconformist art world. They rebelled against political and artistic restraints alike, turning everyday texts and engaged performances into powerful statements of creative independence and unrestrained imagination. Unlike many of their fellow dissenters, these artists rejected elitist notions about art for art’s sake in favor of a more open, democratic, and on-going dialogue about everyday concerns. Their embrace of humor, their focus on the real meaning of words, and their insistence on the importance of broad participation in the creation of art make these artists important models for the challenges of our own time.
